SOLIHULL
When Heerbode Tamskeni Zahedi from Dubai, first approached Solihull college for further information concerning his BTEC National Diploma in sport, little did he realise where his enquiry would take him. Ten months later his journey commenced and his dream to further his career in his favourite sport began.
Scoring for Dubai
With Solihull College
Heerbode recalls what it was like to begin his training and could not believe how physical the sport in the UK can be. “In Dubai because of the heat, the pace is slower and contact with fellow players is virtually nil.” To Heerbode his initiation into the game of football was a challenging one. He talks of how he almost gave up his dream as he missed his home and family in Dubai. “Without the support of my friends and trainers, I would not have made it past the first month!” Feeling ‘homesick’ during the first term, as many students experience, Heerbode found it difficult to focus on his studies and train each day. Even the prospect of being coached by UEFA, A-licensed coaches, proved daunting. However, determined to give it his best ‘shot’, Heerbode continued to press on with this programme and eventually he began to make progress. “I have first class coaches who are enabling me to follow my dream and I am learning so much about the football profession. My friends in Dubai, convinced that I will succeed, have already asked for my autograph. There’s nothing like planning for the future! One day, I hope to play for a professional club, but without the initial support I received from everyone at the beginning, it might all have remained a dream.” Contact details: Email: int.accomm@solihull.ac.uk Website: www.solihull.ac.uk

FINANCIAL FIRST AID
Studying a postgraduate degree is a huge financial commitment. Often students need a little extra help with funding their study. Scholarships can help students meet the cost of tuition fees and/or living expenses and they are available in a huge range of subjects.
Scholarships
For postgraduates
A scholarship is a financial aid provided to a student on the basis of academic merit. It is an award to access an institution for the benefit to study further into higher education. They are awarded on various criteria usually reflecting the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the award. The scholarship rarely has to be paid back. The money awarded can go to such things as tuition fees, living costs or sometimes both. It is there as it demonstrates that the student shows a promise for higher achievement in such areas as academics, athletics, music, art or any other areas.
UK Scholarships Studying in the UK continues to offer excellent value for money for international students. A big draw to the UK is the amount of scholarships available to postgraduate students to help get an internationally recognised qualification.

The aim of coming to Russia was to obtain professional knowledge and experience which would help him continue working in the Nuclear Atomic Institute as a highly qualified expert. His research included exploration of how hydrogen and radiation influence stainless ferrite steel that is an essential structural material of nuclear reactors of the new generation. “I conducted my studies in Russian medium. First it was a shock for me as when I came here I did not know Russian language at all. After I completed the PhD Preparatory course of the Institute for International Education and Language Communication of TPU, I was capable of talking with my Russian friends and writing a good scientific article. During my PhD studies my scientific adviser played a great role in my life. He was not only my scientific adviser, but also a friend. He assisted me a lot in writing my thesis, scientific articles, discussing the results as well as advising about life. He taught me how to ski. Life in Tomsk is fascinating; the city is thriving and dynamic distinguished by its cultural scene and impressive architectural legacy so I could find plenty of inspiration here, both in and out of the laboratory”

CANADA
The eastern part of Canada, known as Atlantic Canada, faces the dual challenge of an ageing population and a growing shortage of skilled and professional workers. The solution, according to a new paper, is that universities should both recruit more international students and then persuade them to stay after they graduate.
Canada
Eastern region seeks to fill skills gap by attracting more international students Demographic precipice
Do universities hold the key to successful immigration? Could you be part of the equation, a welleducated international student who can help Atlantic Canada thrive? Written by the Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU), and aimed primarily at its 17 members, the paper states that Atlantic Canada’s shortage of skilled workers is already bad and will only get worse as the population ages. Unless the region can attract and retain talented, well-educated young people, it argues, long-term economic decline appears to be inevitable. Newcomers to Canada tend to flock to the nation’s three largest cities – Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal – and there is nothing at all wrong with that. You could, of course, study in one of these cities before considering career and lifestyle options along the Atlantic coast. Indeed, the region already benefits from an annual influx of international students, including many who would be happy to build lives there after they graduate. With the encouragement and support of appropriate public policies, this army of knowledge workers could help build a sustainable economy in Atlantic Canada.
14 | www.studyoverseas.com
The area is facing what Colin Dodds, President of Saint Mary’s University and Chair of the AAU, calls a “demographic precipice.” With its rapidly ageing population and growing need for talented workers, Dr. Dodds says the region will “wither away over time” if a “vision and strategic action plan” are not put in place to meet overall demographic challenges. A dire warning has also been sounded by Jim McNiven, professor emeritus at Dalhousie University, who argues that the region’s worker shortage is moving towards ‘Zero Point’, the date at which “the availability of labour hits zero.” In a study completed for Canmac Economics Ltd., Dr. McNiven says one province (Nova Scotia) may hit Zero Point in 2015. Beyond that date, the growing gap between the anticipated need for workers and their supply could not be bridged if current population trends persist. In short, economic decline becomes inevitable if the status quo prevails. Everyone understands the solution: Atlantic Canada, in competition against much of the world, must attract thousands of skilled, educated, educable, motivated, younger migrants. Part of this solution could rest in pursuing vigorously the opportunity to recruit immigrants, skilled workers and entrepreneurs from among the thousands of foreign and out-of-region students who graduate from university each year. Together, these students represent a renewable, powerful human resource that could make an immense contribution toward building a more diverse, more affluent society – one better prepared to compete inside the nation and across the globe.
An almost ideal solution Two recent academic studies take a close look at these issues and challenges, before reaching conclusions that should prove useful in the development of effective public policy to attract skilled migrants to the region. In one report1, Mathieu Wade and Chedly Belkhodja put the search for the young and the talented in a global context, while linking it to the recruitment of international WWW.STUDYOVERSEAS.COM
students at the university-level.“OECD reports show that that there has been a 9 per cent increase of international students in its countries between 2000 and 2005. In 2004, 85 per cent of all 2.7 million international students were enrolled in universities in OECD countries (including Canada.)” The authors call such highly skilled migrants a “precious commodity. Indeed, if OECD countries are looking for skilled immigrants, then foreign students with recognised credentials are an almost ideal solution.” In a companion report2, Dalhousie University doctoral candidate Sinziana Chira shows that Halifax’s two largest universities (Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s) attract students from more than 100 nations. The University of Prince Edward Island also celebrates what it calls the “internationalisation” of its campus, which now attracts students from more than 50 nations worldwide. At Memorial University in St. John’s, students gather from more than 80 countries. Despite the warm welcome foreign students receive at these institutions, Chira says that the overall cultural characteristics of the region can make it difficult for many foreign students to make the transition into the labour force after graduation. Social networks (families, friends) are a key tool for university graduates seeking jobs in the region, but this “culture of networking” itself is a “main obstacle for international students” without family or historic ties inside Atlantic Canada. 12519_Humber_Int_degree_ad:Layout 1 1/19/10 4:19 PM Page 1
Despite impediments to progress, the region’s foreign and out-of-region students represent an opportunity that is too big to pass up. Research conducted by the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission3 show that many students “from away” are not only able; they are also willing. Already, 25 per cent of out-of-region students now stay in Atlantic Canada after graduation. According to the Canadian Bureau of International Education (CBIE) more than 30 per cent of foreign or international students apply for permanent residence in Canada. With more than 7,000 full-time “visa” students attending university in the region, and a further 10,000 out-of-region students enrolling every year, the potential is staggering. 1 Managing a New Diversity on a Small Campus: The Case of the Université de Moncton 2 From Internationalizing Atlantic University Campuses to Internationalizing Halifax, Nova Scotia: A study of the policies and practices surrounding international students on two university campuses and beyond. 3 Two Years On: A Survey of Class 2003 Maritime University Graduates, May 2007

LAS VEGAS
Located in the midst of the Mojave Desert, Las Vegas is an oasis of wealth, extravagance and above all, entertainment. The soaring summer temperatures and mild winters bring 37 million visitors each year, all attracted by the lights and sounds of the Vegas vibe.
Viva Las Vegas Beyond the city
If you need a respite from the neon lights of The Strip then peace and tranquillity is a mere 30 miles away. The awe-inspiring size and art deco architecture of the Hoover Dam is not to be missed. The dam is so large, it straddles two time zones but unbelievably took only five years to build. The construction of the Hoover Dam also created Lake Mead, the largest man-made lake and reservoir in the US. The Lake Mead Recreation Park Area covers an impressive 1.5 million acres (that’s twice the size of Rhode Island) with ample opportunities for boating, fishing and water sports, hiking, climbing and camping.
Getting around Attractions The best way to see Vegas is undoubtedly at 1,149 feet in the observation deck of the Stratosphere Tower between the Strip and Downtown. This freestanding tower is the tallest building west of the Mississippi and offers breathtaking views of the city by day or night. Pop along to Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat outside the Mirage Hotel for a glimpse of the rare and exquisite white tigers and the chance to become a dolphin trainer for the day. Let time stand still while you gaze at the mesmerising Bellagio Fountain. This free aquatic ballet is shown every 15 minutes and is perfectly choreographed to music. The display is best seen at night where coloured lights illuminate the moving water. You may be mistaken for thinking you’ve wandered into Italy when you come across the beautiful architecture, canals and even gondoliers of the Venetian Hotel Casino. This mega-resort has to be seen to be believed. Travel back in time to ancient Egypt at the Luxor Hotel. A large Sphinx greets you as you enter, followed by an enormous Egyptian style black glass pyramid. Uncover the treasures of King Tutankhamun’s tomb on the self-guided audio tour at the King Tut Museum. The Freemont Experience is a laser and lights show in Downtown Vegas that extends five blocks and is closed to traffic. A little cheaper than the Strip, go here for all your souvenir gifts, there are hundreds of vendors to choose from. 16 | www.studyoverseas.com
If you are flying into Vegas you’ll be pleased to know that the McCarran International Airport is just a few miles from the Strip which you can get to via the Shuttle. The buses hit every major hotel all day starting at 7.45 am until midnight. If you don’t fancy walking down the four-mile Strip (the heat can make this walk unpleasant) then you can catch the state-of-the-art monorail one way for a mere $5. If you prefer to drive then you shouldn’t have a problem parking, all major hotels provide a free valet service!
Fun facts • In some Vegas restaurants, you can eat at a buffet for as little as $1.99. • Black Jack and video poker offer the best odds for winning in local casinos. • The 50ft neon sign of a cowboy and cowgirl are named Vegas Vic and Vegas Vicky. • Despite the nickname Sin City, there are more than 500 churches and synagogues, more per capita than any other city in the US.

Typical of a student from the International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS), Ryan Lo is determined to make the most of every opportunity that comes his way.
Climbing the corporate ladder at ICMS Student Profile: Ryan Lo Ryan, who is now at the end of his second year of study, is now ready to learn as much as he can during his remaining time at ICMS. “Most of my classes are practical and related to what I will be doing when I graduate. Recently I had the opportunity to work as theming assistant for a major College function where I learnt the importance of first impressions and attention to detail. Our event had a Harry Potter theme, and we really tried to make guests feel like they were stepping into Hogwarts.” Now, as President-elect of the Asian Students Association, Ryan is determined to help new students adjust to life on campus.
Ryan Lo, 2010 ICMS Hospitality Management student When Ryan, who is studying his degree in hospitality management at ICMS, embarked on his industry training in food and beverage in one of Sydney’s best known hotels he thought the job didn’t have much to offer him. How wrong he turned out to be. No sooner had he started in his position than a large number of staff resigned from the hotel. Ryan made the most of what could have been a difficult situation, gaining valuable experience across the hotel and eventually taking on a leadership role. “I learnt so much from my nine months of paid industry training,” Ryan said. “I got to apply many of the skills I’d learnt in my first two terms at ICMS but most importantly I learnt what not to do in hospitality management and that is about one of the most valuable lessons.” 20 | www.studyoverseas.com
WWW.STUDYOVERSEAS.COM
“Adjusting to College life can be difficult for Asian Students,” Ryan said. “They miss their family and friends. The Asian Students Association helps new students by providing them with the support they need. We run events and activities that make them feel more at home and, if they need extra help, we can point them in the right direction.” To Ryan, it’s all another learning experience. “Since I’ve been involved in the Asian Students Association I’ve learnt a lot about the most difficult area of management- motivating people. I’ll definitely be able to put that to good use when I graduate.” After graduation, Ryan hopes to gain experience in a range of positions in hotel management from front office, to sales and marketing. XENIA VIVES CANO (Spain) BBA (Hons) Finance I’ve always been aware of the importance of getting to know other cultures and I felt that after having been living in Spain for my entire life, it was time to leave the nest. I decided I would pursue my Bachelor’s degree abroad and it didn’t take me a long time to choose Hong Kong as my destination. This was certainly a risky decision as I had never been to Hong Kong before, but somehow I was not afraid at all. I felt that this experience would certainly help me evolve as a person as well as in my future career. Hong Kong felt like the perfect city to me, as it would allow me to be in a Chinese environment (completely different from Europe and the US!) while being in one of the most important financial centres worldwide (Yes, my major is finance, how did you guess?). Now, after almost a month in Hong Kong , I can tell you that it has not disappointed me at all; on the contrary, it has highly exceeded my expectations. What a lively, warm, splendid city this is. All I can say is… what an amazing decision I have made!

JAPAN
Students from around the globe are coming together in a spirit of friendship and equality in a safe, welcoming community with excellent job prospects after graduation where there are countless opportunities to experience a vibrant culture and dynamic business scene. Does this sound too good to be true? Not any more! In Japan, the new destination of choice for many international students, you can find a wide range of courses that will help you stand out from the crowd and prepare you for a career on the world stage. In this issue we look at one of Japan’s most innovative international institutions, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.
Study in Japan
Take on the world! is blended with a range of cultural traditions that have disappeared in large Japanese cities, all of which local citizens are keen to share with APU students. Throughout their time at APU, international students are involved in career development programmes to prepare them for work in Japan and beyond. Many students completing Master’s and PhD programmes at APU go on to work in government agencies and private enterprises, building important bridges between Japan and their home countries. Others take on key roles in research institutes, industry think-tanks and policy-making bodies around the Asia Pacific region.
Japanese expertise, international citizenship
A new kind of international student experience From its multi-cultural, multi-lingual campus in southern Japan, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (commonly known as “APU”) is leading a revolution in international education. At APU, international students are not an optional extra: they are central to the university’s mission. Diverse perspectives are valued, and students receive significant support to ensure that they can make the most of all that APU, and Japan, have to offer. Security is often a major concern for those planning to study away from their home countries, but at APU, students find that they can quickly become part of a safe, secure and friendly local community. The university is located in Beppu, a provincial city of around 130,000 people that has one of the highest concentrations of non-Japanese citizens of any municipality in Japan. This international atmosphere 24 | www.studyoverseas.com
Japan remains one of the world’s largest economies and most influential sources of both technology and popular culture. There is still much to learn from Japanese approaches to business management and innovation, and this country’s experiences in fields such as health and aged care, governance and international cooperation are readily applicable in other national contexts. APU makes the most of these advantages to deliver education that fosters both practical knowledge of contemporary Japan and familiarity with Japanese language and traditional customs. At the same time, students acquire a global outlook and the motivation to apply their expertise to the advancement of their home countries and the international community. As the university’s name suggests, there is a particularly strong focus on the Asia Pacific region and an awareness of the centrality of this region to our global future in the 21st century. Both faculty members and students are drawn from all over the world, making the APU campus a microcosm of the global diversity studied in its classrooms.
A hub for global dialogue APU has played host to many major international academic events, including the World Students’ Summit, UN workshops on peace and security, and the Asia-Pacific Water Summit. The campus has been visited by Nobel Laureates including Amartya Sen and Lee Yuan Tseh. In August this year, 2006 Nobel Peace Prize recipient and WWW.STUDYOVERSEAS.COM
WHAT CAN I STUDY? CEO of Grameen Bank Dr. Muhammad Yunus will be the keynote speaker at a symposium to commemorate APU’s 10th anniversary. The quality of APU’s programmes has been underlined by selection for several prestigious scholarship schemes in recent years. One of these is the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Programme, providing support to students from World Bank member countries to undertake graduate studies at renowned institutions of higher education. Another is the Japanese Government Scholarship International Priority Graduate Programme, implemented in only a small number of institutions in Japan. Some of the other organisations that have sponsored students to study in APU’s programmes include government ministries in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, Japanese corporations and local government bodies, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This is testimony to the value placed on APU’s programmes by both public and private bodies in Japan and throughout the world.

STUDY ABROAD
If you are considering whether to study abroad or not, this list will certainly help you decide if this is the move for you.
d a o r b a y d u t s o t s n o 10 reas 4. Challenge yourself Moving abroad to live and learn in totally new surroundings can be extremely daunting. However, where is the excitement in sticking with what is familiar and ‘safe’? Throwing yourself in at the deep end gives you the chance to discover new strengths and abilities, conquer new challenges, and solve new problems. Being faced with situations that are alien to you will help you learn to adapt to new situations and deal with them effectively.
1. Learn a language – properly There is no faster and more effective way to learn a language than to be surrounded by those who are native speakers of the language you are learning. This is better than learning from a textbook, you will get to hear and use the language in its proper context. Living the culture and hearing the language spoken on a daily basis will accelerate your language skills considerably.
2. Explore your new surroundings Whenever you have spare time, take the opportunity to discover your surroundings and beyond. For many international students, studying overseas means travelling to a new continent, which may present a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience countries you would otherwise never visit.
3. Immerse yourself in the culture This doesn’t just mean trying the local delicacies, really try to understand your host country’s way of life. Culture represents the way people think, feel, believe, perceive and act in the world. If you can tap into this, then you can truly say you understand another culture’s perspective. Not only will you become a more tolerant individual, but also you have the opportunity to adopt aspects of another culture that appeal to you. 28 | www.studyoverseas.com

9. Increase your career potential International students are very attractive to potential employers. A student who has studied abroad has shown that they are self-motivated, independent, can face challenges and are able to adapt well to new situations. Your experience living and studying in a foreign country and learning another language will make you stand out from other job applicants.
10. Acquire some memories Last but definitely not least, is the fact that studying overseas will offer you an experience that you will never forget. So make the most of it!
5. Make life-long friends Whilst studying abroad you will meet so many new people, not only those native to the country, but other international students, too. Learning a new culture with others who are also far from home means you are likely to form close bonds through your shared situation. Being able to understand and support each other through this experience is a great basis for friendship, which may continue long after you have returned home.
6. Re-evaluate yourself Studying a programme abroad educates you both academically and spiritually.Your experience abroad will expose you to new ideas and perspectives, which will challenge you to reconsider your own beliefs and values. You may find this re-affirms your existing values or it may cause you to alter your opinions and adopt new beliefs and concepts. Either way, the experience will allow you to see your own culture from a fresh, new perspective.
7. Broaden your horizons Your time abroad may give you a better perspective on how different world events affect either your host country or those surrounding it. Travelling abroad keeps you better informed of what happens beyond your own country and means you will return home with a broader worldview and enhanced understanding.
8. Learn by a different set of rules Studying within an entirely new academic system offers you the opportunity to sample a different learning environment to what you are used to. You may come across new types of assessment, teaching and project work. You may even have the chance to take additional courses that haven’t been available to you before.
