By Dan EVERY DAY Kennedy Recently, two business partners came to visit me, looking for magical help with their host of terrible problems. Without dragging you through all the details, the bottom line: they have no terrible problems. They have a few minor problems. But, overall, they’re in pretty good shape.

Theirs is a business that peaked at about $2.5 million, dipped to $1.6, but is now back up to $1.8, may break $2 million this year “as is,” has lost some markets but gained different opportunities, and is satisfactorily if not excitingly profitable as compared to industry norms. But to hear these two, you’d think the sky was falling.

The blunt truth: they need a therapist, not a marketing consultant.

Actually, they need to start with a very simple but important strategy...

One of the Eternal Truths that I quote in one of my books is: when you are up to your ass in alligators, it’s difficult to remember that your original objective was to drain the swamp. It’s easy to get so caught up in managing all the problem parts of a business that you never do anything else. And that’s a sure path to where these two partners are now: burn out.

I could give ‘em the all-time killer sales letter, the best marketing campaign ever devised, and it wouldn’t do them much good... when they go to the office each day wishing they weren’t there, fatigued from first thing on, going through the motions, viewing their activities as drudgery...and end the day without any sense of measurable progress toward meaningful goals...their ‘walking dead’aura pervades every nook and cranny, every employee, every customer, every aspect of their business. It’s the psychic equal of trying to attract a lot of customers to a restaurant that smells like rotting, burning flesh.

Prescription: each and every day, keep a pre-set, inviolate appointment with yourself or with one or two key people, out of sight and hearing of the alligator pit, no matter how many alligators there are or how hungry they are, to do nothing but focus and work on positive, productive plans and strategies that look to the future, that are linked to goals and progress, that you can be excited and optimistic about.

Simplistically, this is a means of maintaining perspective. Even better, add taking one action, getting one thing done every day, no matter what, that you know moves you forward, toward positive goals. Go home, if you must, knowing you spent 7 hours and 58 minutes in the alligator pit, but at least you found 2 minutes to put something into motion that will improve things.

Why Your Hottest Prospects MIGHT NEVER BUY

Your team may be inadvertently jeopardizing your sales before you even knew you lost a customer. Where’s the hole in your funnel and how can you fix it?

Prospects these days often contact your business before they buy. They might email you, fill out a contact form on your website, call the office, or request a “Lead Magnet” by opting in on your site.

Taking any of these actions is a lead’s way of “raising his or her hand” and indicating interest in your business.

Creating email campaigns using automation software is a monumental step forward from not having any automation in place, but what happens when one of your prospects replies BACK to your automated follow up emails?

Likely, their email goes to one person on your team into a personal email inbox, and waits for that one person to hand write an email response on back.

As a business owner, there’s no visibility into how many prospect inquiries are coming in, no indications of how long it takes your team to first reply to the inquiry, and no system for your team to leverage to quickly and easily get back to leads with personalized templates including built-in email automation.

Increasing Lead Conversion Empower your team with personalized templates that are well crafted once and used again and again to answer your prospect’s most frequently asked questions. These templates can be pre-written before a product launch based on your anticipated questions, or written right now for your current offerings based on the questions your team sees most frequently.

These templates should be well-written, personalized with merge fields, and most importantly include a strong Call to Action at the end of the email.

But what if your team could respond back with a well-written template that addresses the lead’s question and has already embedded into the response a link to purchase, so that when the prospect clicks, it identifies them in your email automation software as having clicked the “buy link” and pre-fills in the order form for them with their information that you already have on file? And what if instead of the case being closed and off your team’s radar, that case stayed open and top of mind for your team to follow up?

With the right system in place, this is not only possible, it’s easy for your team to use and provides a great experience for both prospects and customers.

Implementation When looking to put a great support system into place, there are generally a few options.

If working with just email, your team can copy and paste from a document for “templates” or use an autocomplete plugin for long templates, and then utilize a plugin or other software solution to sync the incoming and outgoing emails into your email automation software. This isn’t terribly efficient, doesn’t allow for customization, and doesn’t provide any reporting or key business insights.

Working with a third party help desk system or support desk?

Now your team can transfer and escalate cases, possibly utilize templates, and potentially - depending on the system - see some reporting. The downside is that your team will waste time switching between your email automation software and your help desk software, copying and pasting information, and they won’t be able to fully leverage your email automation software.

Finally, you can upgrade to a system that fully integrates with your email automation software system, so you can leverage its full power with the smallest amount of time and trouble.

MACHINE” Steve Sipress: Steve Sipress here with Tyler Garns, one of the masters of all time with generating leads via the internet.

Tyler, one of the most often questions I ask anywhere I go is, “Can you help me market my business on the internet?” I’m assuming that you get the same question everywhere, and you have an answer that is absolutely “yes.” So tell me, what’s a number one tip you would give to a local business owner who has a brick-and-mortar location, maybe they’re a service business, maybe they’re a professional. They’re done Yellow Page ads, they’ve put up a website, they’re used Valpak, maybe even a billboard or a local newspaper, and they’ve tried something on the internet, but they don’t seem to be able to maximize in getting leads off the internet. Is there any really great advice you could give those folks?

Tyler Garns: Yeah, you’re right. That is a very, very common question. The first thing I always tell people is, “You’ve got to be willing to invest in online marketing.” And I don’t mean just with money, but I mean with time and effort and testing, and all of that. People, I think, assume that the internet is this land of freedom, meaning land of free stuff, meaning free traffic and free leads and everything else. And you hear the success stories of, “You know, I posted this thing on Facebook, and all of a sudden I got a bazillion followers. And all of a sudden, business went

through the roof.”

Those things can happen, but in reality most businesses need to get online and get serious about it in terms of having a monthly budget and just commit to, “Hey, I’m going to spend $500 a month or $1,000 a month,” or whatever you can commit to, commit to doing that every month and following up with it and making sure you’re testing.

Now we could get into a big, long discussion about getting the messaging right, make sure you’re targeting; all those types of things. But that’s initially what I would tell people. And if they say, “Hey, that sounds great. I’m willing to jump in and commit to that,” then we’ll move to that further discussion. But if they are not, then I just tell people, “You’re going to have a hard time being successful online if you’re not willing to do that. If you think you’re just going to throw up a few tweets, it’s just not going to work.”

Steve: All right, so first thing is get their mindset straight that it’s not the magic “Jack In The Beanstalk – I’m going to throw some beans into the internet, and money’s just going to come flying in.”

So let’s assume that for those of my readers that have not flipped the page by now, they’re staying here because they’re saying “Okay Tyler, okay Steve, I’m willing to put in some effort here if I can get some results.”

So you mentioned a couple of things there. Let me start with the targeting, because people that know me know in my The WOW! Strategy™, the first thing is the “Who,” which you’ve got to get straight who your target market is. So can you talk a little bit about the importance of targeting in your market?

Tyler: Well, yeah. Like you said, it’s really the first step. You’ve got to nail that down, and I know that so many small business owners are very reluctant to get very specific, because they feel like, “The market’s so much bigger if I talk a little more broadly, and I don’t want to lose business, I don’t want to turn business away…”

Whatever.

But in reality, if you’re talking to everybody, you’re talking to no one. You probably told your audience that a million times. So the key is to get really, really focused on who your best, most profitable customers are. Now for a business that has been in business for a while, that’s easy, because you can go back and interview your best customers and talk to them.

I have a series of questions I have my clients ask – very specific questions. Trying to drill into exactly what is going on with these people – with their emotions, with their pains, with their fears, all those different types of things. And really tapping into that, and the marketing message.

says, “Look, I provide a solution, and anyone that has that need ought to just come in.” Then they find out that they’re a little lonely in their business, looking around going, “Where is everybody?”

No matter how rational we think we are, people make decisions based on emotion. So I know you talk a lot about getting the right message to people, which is actually the second part of my The WOW! Strategy™, which is the Irresistible Offer, and that’s all about getting some kind of a message to the target market. So tell me, how do you systematically generate good messaging?

Tyler: Great question. So I mentioned that we always have our clients call up their past customers and interview them. We do that through this systematic series of questions, but it’s also a matter of talking to the best customers, and then talking to the worst customers. People hate doing this, but I always tell them, “Look, I’m sorry but you have to.

You have to understand what it is about those bad customers that makes them bad.” So call up all the people that sent you nasty emails. Call up all the people that ask for refunds. Call up all the people that flamed you all over the internet, and ask them this same series of questions.

If you’re just starting out, then it can be a little trickier. So I always recommend in those situations, go find someone who has marketed to your audience before. It doesn’t have to be the same product or same niche or whatever, but if they’ve been marketing to your audience before, then they probably understand a little bit about these people.

I’ll give you an example of what happens when you do this right. I was working with a personal injury law firm last year, and we went through this line of questioning with some great clients and some really bad clients. And these people, this law firm has been in existence for 30+ years. They really felt like, “Hey, we know our customers. We’ve got this nailed down. We don’t need to do these questions.” So I said, “Look, I understand. This will hopefully confirm everything you believe. But it might give us some insight as well.”

You can gather some information, and develop a profile of people. People call them a persona or an avatar, or whatever you want to call it – it doesn’t really matter to me. But develop a profile for what those people look like, and primarily what their emotions are like and how you can tap into those emotions with your marketing. So yeah, that is absolutely step number one.

What we discovered in doing this series of questioning was that the bad customers – and they hadn’t really made this connection before in 30 years of practicing law – the bad customers who ended up unhappy and writing bad reviews, those types of things, they had actually, before engaging with the law firm, had a feeling of, “I want someone to fight for me.”

They would never say “revenge,” but essentially in all of the things that they told us, there was a sense of they wanted revenge, they wanted justice, they wanted to make a lot of money through the lawsuit. And really, they wanted to go to court and  battle it out in court.

Steve: You mentioned a huge thing, which is “tap into the emotions of people,” because that’s another kind of mistake… I say kind of, but it’s a big mistake –based on kind of laziness – where a local business owner

When we interviewed the good customers, they could care less about all of that. They were really concerned about the medical bills, and it was a very confusing environment with all the medical bills and insurance companies and everything.

They just felt like they needed help through that.

The things they would say is, “I want to get my life back on track” – where the other people would say, “I want someone to fight for me.”

We’ve all seen it, the law firms with the commercials on TV: “We will fight for you.” What they determined is when they say that message, they’re actually attracting the wrong people. They attract the people that are a pain in the neck. They sucked tons of resources out of the company, and in the end they walk away unhappy, even if the law firm does their job and gets a successful result, which 90%+ of the time is settle out of court. But those walk away unhappy because they wanted to go into court and battle it out.

So they changed the messaging. They changed it more towards, “We’re going to help you get your life back on track, we’re going to help you get back into a successful career” – those types of things.

And that really changed the type of people that they were attracting.

So even if you feel like you really understand your customer, doing those types of interviews and asking the right questions really can be eyeopening in terms of the message that you put out there, that you might think, “Hey, this is a strong message. It’s attracting a lot of leads.”What you may not realize is that it attracts a lot of bad people, if you haven’t systematically gone through that type of a process.

somebody, or do they want to win the lawsuit, and they don’t even care if it’s a lawsuit – they just want to get money? It makes a huge difference in how you’re going to attract those clients, or whether you’re actually going to repel them.

Tyler: Yeah. That’s an area where a lot of people get confused or they’re just not even sure where to start.

Steve: This is great. And it’s exactly… You mentioned it: My people who’ve probably heard this from me a thousand times, because, of course, since you’re very successful through your clients and so am I, we teach the same thing. We’ve just said it again, that people are making decisions emotionally.

So you would think, and so would the attorneys think, “Oh, people come to us because they want money” or “People come to us because they want to win a lawsuit.”

So how about this one: I know you teach, and you’re talking all about the importance of, messaging.

And I hear people, and I’ve taught people, and I’ve used a lot of positioning also. But can you tell us: What’s the difference between “messaging” and “positioning?”

Yet when you get into the emotions, do they want to win the lawsuit because they just want to make a point and get revenge and get back at

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR Hi. This is Blaze O’Glory, the firehouse mascot and president of the Lassie’s Rescue Rangers fan club. My old pal Manny kindly stepped aside this month so I could use this space to write about a serious subject that really burns me up.

In my line of work, I see way too many needless losses.

Firefighters and other first responders do an excellent job of saving the lives of humans, but pets are another story. No matter how hard the rescuers try, oxygen masks designed for humans just don’t work very well for pets, precious oxygen escapes, and most pets suffering from smoke inhalation will pass away.

No matter how plaintively the rescuers urge, “No, don’t go toward THAT light – come back toward this playfully moving laser pointer light,” it’s usually a lost cause.

Dogs and cats don’t make things any easier. Like children, when faced with a totally unexpected situation such as a fire, their tendency is to HIDE in the house. Coincidentally, if an honest politician showed up at the door, the incredulous pets would probably implode.

Well, there’s hope on the horizon. Many communities have started equipping their rescue personnel with pet oxygen masks like those sold by Pet America, a non-profit organization based in San Diego. The masks come in various sizes and are designed to fit snugly over the snout of dogs and other pets.

Yes, the masks come with a pretty hefty price tag, but how can you put a dollar figure on keeping a family united with its beloved four-legged companions?

If your community doesn’t have pet-specific oxygen masks and other pet rescue equipment, start a petition. Municipal budgets are usually tight, but sometimes pet stores or the local Invisible Fence franchise will subsidize the effort.

Fundraising projects can help you get the rest of the way.

More rescuers need to learn how to recognize the pulse in a dog or cat. And to recognize the crazy gleam in the eyes of those extremist wackos who would recommend oxygen masks for ticks and fleas.

Everybody is talking about cloud-based data storage, but don’t be in a rush to have cloud-based pets. Uh, like “All Dogs Go To Heaven.” Get it? Hmph! Manny makes this wisecrack stuff look so easy.

I know you’ll all breathe easier when Manny is back on the job – and pets will breathe easier if you get those oxygen masks!

Manny (full name “Emanuel” or “Dog With Us”) is Steve and Michele Sipress’ crazy, rambunctious cocker spaniel. Let’s face facts. Facebook reports that there are over 1.28 BILLION monthly active Facebook users. That’s an insane number that should get you excited. And if you’re not using Facebook to your advantage, you’re wasting a precious resource.

a product, and it’s also a great way to get people engaged. Often, businesses discount the emotional response portion of marketing, thinking that having a good product is enough. Sometimes it is, but they’re missing out on a lot of people buying their product and talking about it, because they haven’t given them a reason why they should care. Don’t be a nameless entity. Let your readers know who you are and what you’re all about. That will tell them why your business matters.

These following tips can help you on your way to mastering Facebook.

Tip #1: Stay focused. Whatever your niche is, stay in that niche. You must have a laser-like focus on what you and your business is all about. If you stray too far from the center of your business, your audience will become confused. A confused mind never buys.

Tip #2: Include pictures. This is a simple trick that brings about the best response and engages the most people. We are visual beings but a lot of marketers forget that by only posting written content. I’m guilty of it myself. However, if possible, add a picture to your content. People will be drawn to it.

Bottom line is this: You’ll never get anywhere with internet marketing unless you take action today. One of the best and biggest steps you can take to further your fan base, your reputation and your bank account is by using Facebook to your advantage. So go get started!

Tip #3: Pay attention to the day. Fridays are proven to the best day to post on social media sites, Facebook included. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by to grab attention from your fans.

Tip #4: Ask questions. Facebook and other sites like it are all about engagement. People want to feel like they are part of a community. Also, people love to talk about themselves. Ask a simple question that they can answer in a sentence or less. This way, it’s almost just too easy to respond to you. For instance, if you have a Facebook fan page about turtles, ask your fans, “What’s your turtle’s name?”

Tip #5: Create contests. Contests are a great way to get people participating on your Facebook page.

Everyone loves contests. The contest can be for a free prize, recognition, money, anything you can think of. Make sure that the rules of the contest are clear so that’s there’s no confusion as to what your fans are winning and how.

Tip #6: Incentivize to get fans. Think of it this way: What does your Facebook page provide to your target audience? Your goal should be to find what motivates your target consumer. Once you know what motivates them, you can incentivize your page to grab their attention and readership.

Worse, your emails could be sorted automatically into the spam folder and your subscriber won’t even see them.

On the one side, email is a very low cost way to reach and follow up with a large number of potential clients and customers.

Deliverability, ISP’s and spam folders are separate topics beyond the scope of this article, but as with many things, an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure.

Done right, email can be your most powerful and profitable marketing channel.

On the other side, the benefits of email marketing are widely known and your competition also enjoys the same low mailing costs.

The challenge is that your email campaigns compete with massive amounts of email to be noticed in your subscribers’ inboxes.

In this age of advertising saturation, that’s hardly news. But there is a bigger problem many are not aware of that can compound your challenges.

If your emails don’t get noticed, they don’t get opened. Still, that’s only the tip of the iceberg that can sink your email marketing efforts.

Not only don’t you get any sales when your email goes unopened, but the ISP’s will begin to regard your emails as low value, or even spam, and your deliverability will suffer.

In other words, how do you make sure your subscribers eagerly open your emails right from the moment they opt in?

Or, if you have had a drop off in open rates from your existing subscribers, how do you get them to re-engage?

The answer to long term success in email marketing is to keep your subscribers’ interest. The good news is that it can be easier than you think if you keep a few core concepts in mind before you press send.

Don’t forget that you’re talking to PEOPLE. It’s easy to forget subscribers are people instead of wallets. the other end of the “send.” In practical terms, what this means is that subscribers begin to tune out your messages or unsubscribe altogether. Keep a single person in mind when you write every email.

Know why people are subscribing to your email list.

Why did your subscriber opt in? What originally attracted them to your marketing? Invariably they wanted to solve a problem. Whether you market an experience like entertainment or an event, or a product or a service, each solves a problem. After all, when someone wants something and they don’t have, then that is a problem.

If your emails no longer solve a problem then your subscriber will no longer open them. It’s that simple.

So make sure your promotions help your subscribers solve their problems even if they don’t buy from you.

3) Don’t “oversell.” People don’t like to be sold, but they love to buy. The paradox is that we love to be able to buy what we want, but the cliché sales pitch is inherently unpleasant if we aren’t congruent with buying at the time or if we don’t have an interest in what is being offered. To stay in business you need to make sales, so the ideal email should feel like content but also encourage a sale.

Know what your customers WANT. What does your customer want? What are their problems? If you write your emails so that if you were in your subscriber’s shoes, YOU would open them, then you are on the right track.

Put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself if you would open your emails. If you are providing genuine value, then your subscribers will respond positively because so much of your competition is sending out nothing but sales pitches.

Stay in touch. Build a relationship with your subscribers so that you are a real person to them or that your company remains relevant to them. In this high tech and impersonal age, people crave connection and when it’s done correctly your subscribers will look forward to reading your emails. Don’t fear that you are “bugging them” if you are sending valuable content.

A long absence from their inbox will only damage the relationship and push them to your competition.

In a nutshell, the key to getting your emails opened right from the opt-in is to make a solid first impression and maintain the relationship from there.
