When we first started, I was terribly in debt and we were just a few months away from bankruptcy. We started seeing a boost right away in our business, we took what Steve’s given me and we just started implementing and implementing, and it’s just totally transformed my business. Steve has helped me with my laser focus, he helps me implement, he’s taken my business to a whole new level. We went from a half a million dollars to a million dollars in two years. It’s just an incredible experience to know that where you think you’re just dead and things are horrible, to now anything is possible. I can see taking this to a whole new three or four types of businesses -- it’s going to be huge. Steve is all business, he is an unbelievably smart, brilliant man. I can’t say enough about him. Everything he’s told me, I’ve made so much money it doesn’t matter what it costs. They don’t make enough money in this world that somebody could pay me so I would stop listening to Steve. Steve is the exact reason why I have a retirement fund now. It’s probably illegal how much fun I’m having!”

TIME TO

GET OVER IT By Steve Sipress

ALREADY?

The 2016 Presidential Election was over months ago – but you wouldn’t know it from the continued complaining, crying, whining, moaning, protesting, marching, and rioting by millions of Americans whose preferred candidate lost – not to mention their desperate attempts to undermine the results by demanding recounts, begging members of the electoral college to change their votes, and blaming everyone from the Director of the FBI to Vladimir Putin to Julian Assange for the embarrassing upset loss (everyone but those actually responsible for the loss: the historically terrible and out-oftouch candidate herself, and her staff). This is in amazingly stark contrast to how people reacted to the last two Presidential elections, where an anti-small business “You didn’t build that” radical leftist was the winner.

Even though it was immediately crystal clear that an Obama presidency would be disastrous for small business owners (and therefore the overall economy), I don’t remember anyone crying, moaning, protesting, marching, or rioting in the streets. I also don’t remember anyone demanding recounts, begging members of the electoral college to change their votes, or blaming anyone but the losing candidates for the losses. Both times, I myself got over the bad-for-small-businessowners results instantly, and simply got to work to control the only thing I could: my own personal economy. On the morning after the election in 2008, I sent the following email to everyone on my list. On the morning after the election in 2012, I posted the exact same message to my blog, and resent it to the people on my email list:

TIME TO GET OVER IT ALREADY?

S UBJECT: IT’S OVER.

Hi I don’t know about you, but I sprang out of bed this morning with more energy than I’ve had in a while. And if you know me, that’s saying a lot. The seemingly never-ending presidential campaign is FINALLY over. Regardless of who won or lost, for some reason I just feel totally relieved. All the uncertainty is gone. Now we can all get on with our lives. No matter who you wanted to win, one thing seems fairly certain: the troubled economy and an overwhelming democratic majority in power will not be good for small businesses in general. So we all have a choice: We can gripe and complain and be depressed and feel sorry for ourselves, OR we can be determined to take immediate and massive action to overcome any and all challenges that face us. I know which option I choose. •

I’ve been ramping up my marketing for months, and will continue to do so.

I’ve taken on more coaching and consulting clients and work than ever.

I’m publishing new articles and updating old ones I already have published.

I recently registered two new domains and am all-out at work creating a new information product.

I am putting the finishing touches on my book.

I’m networking and putting together more joint ventures than ever before.

I’ve recently purchased and studied more sales and marketing materials than ever (and that’s saying a lot — my library is EXTENSIVE).

Even though the overall small business environment will be much better for small business owners over these next four or eight years, it is still up to each one of us to work hard and implement the right strategies and tactics to take advantage of the improved opportunities to thrive.

Whether or not you are happy that Donald Trump won the election, there is zero doubt that he will be light years better for small business owners than Barack Obama was. However, that doesn’t mean that automatically every single small business owner will suddenly be guaranteed to have massive success. Even though the overall small business environment will be much better for small business owners over these next four or eight years, it is still up to each one of us to work hard and implement the right strategies and tactics to take advantage of the improved opportunities to thrive. Successful business owners know that “money loves speed.” Here’s hoping you don’t make the mistake of taking a long time to get over anything that bothers you. No matter what you see as a setback that might occur, bounce out of bed the next morning full of energy, and attack your goals.

February 2017

Valentine’s Day:

Pay It F rward I know you’re all expecting a bunch of zany Valentine’s Day puns and flights of fancy from your old pal Manny; but as Forrest Gump’s momma always said, “Life is like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get.” (And it can be dangerous for dogs. And there are a lot of nuts. But I digress.) No, I’ve decided to take a more serious route, and deliver an essay with more redeeming social value. Of course that’s not totally unprecedented for me. Deep down, that’s just the kind of guy I am – thinking of others first. (“I wonder if SHE would like to pat me on the head. I wonder if the MAILMAN’S bum leg will slow him enough for him to be caught. I wonder if THEY would like to unburden themselves of some of those heavy treats…”) Seriously, I would like to ask my loyal readers to be mindful of the less fortunate during this time of unbridled romance and giddy celebration. Remember the widows and widowers who are left with bittersweet memories of the dear departed when everyone else is kissing on football stadium Jumbotrons or slipping engagement rings into desserts. Tell them you remember their late spouse, too. Share some favorite anecdotes. Lots of people go through ugly breakups right before Valentine’s Day. Don’t rub your happiness in their face. (Even rubbing roadkilll in their face hasn’t been approved by the FDA for human use yet, so just put a blanket ban on the whole rubbing phenomenon, okay?) Give them a shoulder to lean on and let them know you’ll be around to help

whenever they’re ready to get back in the saddle for love. Maybe some of your friends, neighbors, and co-workers have never been lucky at love. Maybe they’re quiet, shy wallflowers who have always loved pure and chaste from afar. In that case, don’t spend February 15th going on and on about what a great time you and your Significant Other had. Reassure them of all their great qualities and subtly, gradually, non-judgmentally help them find love. Before you know it, they may be planning a romantic getaway. Alas, my own experience with getaways has been far from romantic. (“Hey! You get away from my Fifi or I’m turning the hose on you!”) If you’re a longtime reader, you know I’ve played matchmaker and helped out my friends over the years; but I can’t do it all by myself. I’m enlisting the aid of each and every one of you. I want you to be my “thousand points of light.” Okay, I admit it: even though I have altruistic intentions, I still also have ulterior motives. If you become my “thousand points of light,” we can drive those stupid cats crazy! (“Ooo…it’s here! Now it’s over there! It’s on the ceiling! This will keep me gainfully employed all the way up until time to…ZZZZZZZZ…”) Have a Happy Valentine’s Day. And help someone else enjoy it just as much.

expert interview with

Nina Hershberger BECOMING A

LOCAL CELEBRITY Steve Sipress: Nina Hershberger, I know you are among the busiest people, getting the most stuff done of anyone I know. I really thank you for taking the time to be here with me. Nina Hershberger: You’re welcome, Steve. It’s my pleasure. I don’t get it all done. Fortunately, I have a team of people all around the world. And maybe that’s a subject for another

podcast, but I am an advocate of virtual assistants. So that’s how I get so much done. Steve: You specialize in helping my ideal “WHO,” my target audience, which is the business owner. Everyone knows there is just a ton of competition, unless you are smart enough, fortunate enough to be in some small area where you’re the

4 I RHINO MONTHLY I www.SteveSipress.com

only doctor in town or whatever. There’s just so much competition, and thanks to the internet, there’s more than ever, and it’s easier for people to compete. And yet you help people break through all of that and become the clear choice. And one of the ways you do it is by having what people would call themselves, or what people would think about as a regular old business owner become a celebrity.

EXPERT INTERVIEW

If you look at the bookstore, you look even at the celebrities in Hollywood, and they’ve all got books. You can spend $15,000 to $20,000, find a ghost writer, and they will write the book for you. In fact, we do that for clients. Now, we’re not talking about Lady Gaga celebrity, so what are we talking about? Nina: Well, you’re talking about local celebrity, in your local community. So Steve, give me somebody in your audience. Give me some kind of a business. Steve: Let’s take an attorney. Nina: An attorney, okay, perfect. So, let’s say you’re in a community of maybe 50,000 people, and you’ve got 10, 15, 20 attorneys in the area. So what makes you unique, what makes you different? And just to back up, I have been doing direct response marketing for about 20 years, so I’ve written radio ads, I’ve written newspaper ads, I’ve done scripting, I’ve done all sorts of different things, direct mail, “Queen of Direct Mail.” But, what I began to learn, what I began to understand is that, to stand out from the crowd, to stand out from the clutter, one of the best things they can do is create a book, write a book.

Needs To Know About Social Security.” The book is not very long, it’s only about maybe 70 pages something, a thin book. But he orders them by the hundreds, and gives them away for free. So now, he is the person, the lawyer, the one who’s written the book in his area (he happens to be in New York). So writing a book sets them apart. Steve: It sounds great, and everyone – I think – knows how great it is, but attorneys are kind of busy, right? So writing a book… Is that just something they’re just suddenly going to do? Nina: Well there’s a couple of ways you can do it. And if you look at the bookstore, you look even at the celebrities in Hollywood, and they’ve all got books. Most of them, probably 99% of them, they don’t write the books themselves. You can find a ghost writer. You can spend $15,000 to $20,000, find a ghost writer, and they will write the book for you. In fact, we do that for clients. We’ve written a number of books. It is $15,000 for us to write a book. But they can go find somebody. A second way they could do it – and I do have an attorney friend who did this very thing – if they speak. So, that particular attorney friend specializes in divorces, and he only works with women. So he speaks – or somebody in his office – once

February 2017

a month, and somebody who’s thinking about a divorce, they come to his event. And they recorded that particular talk, that speech, and then they had it transcribed. And that was the beginning of the book. So now they can just edit it. So that’s option number two. So, you can spend money and have it ghost-written, and they would interview you and do all of that. We’ve done that. Option number two is speak, have it transcribed, and then do something yourself. And then, option number three, that we’ve done in a lot of different niches, we’ve already written the book for people, and we license that content, and it’s much, much more reasonable. So if you happen to be in a niche that I play in, then we’ve got that option. So we send you the Word documents already written, and you can edit it, and voila, you’ve got a book. Steve: So bottom line is to become this author, this local celebrity, and then you’re saying, just by giving out these free books, suddenly you’re the attorney, or the plumber, or the heating and air guy that everyone is going to choose? It’s that magical? Nina: Well I’ve got a special report that I wrote, “21 Ways To Use The Book.” So you don’t just all of a sudden, the box of books show up into your office, and you magically

If you’re an attorney, writing a book is a big deal. So what every person needs to know about whatever niche you’re in – in fact I have an attorney that we did two books for, he’s in both social security and the workers’ comp area. I don’t have it in front of me to know what the exact title is, but it’s like, “What Every Person

EXPERT INTERVIEW

For instance, let’s say you’re a farmer, and there is a magazine that only goes to farmers. It’s not on any newsstand. It is printed and it is sent to you, but it’s for free. Is that a real magazine, just because it’s printed and mailed? So, where’s the definition of a real magazine? But here’s the magical part about it, Steve: If you’re actually interviewed, and put in a magazine piece, every single time you don’t have control about really what they write. You hope they tell your story properly, you hope that things happen. And it’s a good thing to have it done.

have something happen; you have to do something. One of my suggestions is actually to do a press release and send it to all of your local media, and announce that you now are an author and you wrote this book, and a lot of them will get interviewed. Another idea – and that’s what this lawyer does that works with just women – he has what I call “whale” referral sources. These are people that deal with women who are thinking about going through a divorce, and counseling. They send those women to him for the possibility of handling their divorce. So he provides his books, free of charge, to those referral sources, who then hand the book out. And now it’s a “positioning” piece. So yeah: Box doesn’t arrive, and all of a sudden magic things happen – you’ve got to do some things. But yeah, we’ve given all sorts of ideas of how to do that.

from you, these, I don’t want to say “fake,” but they look like they’re in a magazine. What’s that thing called?

Steve: Now the local business person can – even if they don’t have the time or the inclination, or know what to write, they get a book written. I know you also… Every time I see one, I think, “I want one of those for me!” A lot of my friends have gotten them

There are different styles of writing. In some cases we do a soft sale, but it’s very much of a magazine-written kind of a piece. So when I’m asked the question, “Is that a real magazine?” the answer is, “Well, no. But what is the definition of a real magazine?”

Nina: Yeah, Steve, I call that a “magazine tear sheet.” Here’s what’s magical about them. First of all, people will say to me, “Has that been in a real magazine?” To answer it, let me first back up, let me describe what it looks like. It’s a four-page, printed on 11x17, folded once. So the front of it looks like it’s been in a magazine. So, in your case, because you’re a big marketer, we would do “Marketing Times Today.” Your picture would go on the front, we have a lead-generation headline, just like you would see on the magazine. But you open it up, and it’s three more pages of your story written in very much a magazine format. I have a gal who’s written for me for probably five or six years, fabulous magazine writer.

6 I RHINO MONTHLY I www.SteveSipress.com

I’m not saying written publications are not good. However, when we do the magazine tear sheets, it is your story, it is told in the manner you want to be told, you do have your contact at the end of the piece. And it really creates a celebrity status for you. And what we’ll often do, Steve, is we take the front cover of that, we’ll blow it up, and you can actually… Say you’re an insurance agent, you can actually post that. Or a doctor, you can put it in your waiting room. So not only the blown-up, it can be on the wall, but you can actually have the magazine pieces right in the waiting room, so people can see it, and you can put it in your trust box, or “shock and awe,” a term that you and I both recognize. So it’s a real winning kind of combination: a book and a magazine tear sheet, celebrity expert. Steve: I love the idea you were just talking about, the control issue, because I talk a lot about how 20 years ago, if somebody wanted to have a video done about them and their business, and a tour of their place, and who they are… Man! How expensive and timely cost that would be. You had to hire a camera crew, and they come with all their lights and cameras, and you pay them a lot of money, and you wait ‘til it all gets developed and edited. Nowadays,

EXPERT INTERVIEW

you just take your phone out of your pocket pretty much, everyone’s carrying around a professional photography… Good enough at least to shoot a video, and then you can put it up onto a website, for free, on YouTube.com. Put it on, and people can see it all over your town, all over your area. And that goes for not only videos, but it’s the same thing with articles. If you want an article written, you would have to convince a magazine – to use your term, a “real magazine” to come out and feature your business. And those that have been around as long as we have and been in business for a while, remember the days of, “Hey it’s great! The local paper is coming out to do a story on us!” But now, you can have your own magazine, your own website, your own videos, your own everything. So this is just seizing control, taking the control that we freely have of the media, and making it work for you. And how few businesses are doing that? That’s why you say it helps you with competition, because you can be almost certain that your competition ain’t doing this stuff! Nina: Yeah, I’ll never forget… I did a piece for a cosmetic surgeon. You walk in a doctor’s office, and a cosmetic surgeon it’s all self-pay, it’s all cash payments, so there’s no insurance involved in that. So if you imagine going in to somebody like that… What’s on his walls? The diploma from wherever it is he graduated. Well, I don’t know about you, Steve, but I assume the man graduated from a medical school. I really don’t care where, and I don’t need to see the diploma. However, I know nothing about this man. I know nothing about that, anything about him. This magazine piece, in there, we put he’s a pilot, and he had this Cessna plane, and so we put a picture of him with his Cessna plane, we put a picture with his

February 2017

When we do the magazine tear sheets, it is your story, it is told in the manner you want to be told, you do have your contact at the end of the piece. And it really creates a celebrity status for you. family, all those kind of things, and he had them in his waiting room. All of a sudden, his patients, the people who were going to give him money, began to know him as a person. And you and I both know, like and trust – that’s the key of getting some money. So yeah, they’re very powerful. Steve: Well, I think people know the power of the media, and you have opened some doors here. I see by the clock on the wall we’re at the end of

today’s segment, but I want to talk in the next one a little bit more about how, again, someone who thinks of themself as just another average business owner out there can really harness this power for themselves. Can we talk about that a little more? Nina: Absolutely. I’ve got more ideas for you. To listen to the complete interview, go to: SteveSipress.com/magazine

Nina Hershberger has been in marketing throughout her three decade professional career—even when her job description said otherwise. A born marketer, Hershberger added value to her organizations by initiating ideas that increased sales by hundreds of thousands of dollars (and in some cases, millions), added profitable new business services, and raised the companies’ profiles. In 2006, she launched Megabucks Marketing to leverage her innovative ideas into concrete results for clients. Her specialty? Leading companies away from the popular but ineffective “cold call, hope, and wait” approach. Always looking for ways to help her clients position themselves as experts and celebrities rather than salesmen, Nina started a book publishing division within her company in 2009 because she knew that the highest quality client/customers are initially attracted by a book. They are intelligent, want to be informed, can process information and are thoughtful in decision making. They are also less price sensitive and spend more money over a longer period of time. Today she helps local brick and mortar businesses position themselves as the expert celebrity by helping them write a book about their niche and then use that book to blow away the competition. Watch The News. MAKE THE NEWS. It never dawns on people how much of their time is spent as a spectator, how little spent actually playing a game over which they exercise control.

By Dan Kennedy I happen to be a politics junkie and, therefore, a news junkie. I even write political columns, so I have to pay attention daily. But I learned years ago that it is the news media’s job to make every problem a crisis, every item of earth-shaking, life-altering importance. Few news events actually are. As a matter of fact, most things wind up being about as important as you permit them to be.

Few people think of themselves as news-makers. All the world’s a stage, and on it there are players, but there are countless more spectators. It never dawns on people how much of their time is spent as a spectator, how little spent actually playing a game over which they exercise control. Millions watch football on any given Sunday. Only a small cadre of coaches scheme to win their games on Sunday, a small number of players work hard all week to be mentally and physically prepared to win the games in which they compete. It’s significant that the spectators rarely make news – the winning players and coaches do. And the spectators never get million-dollar contracts to watch. They must pay for that privilege. There is that old cliché, about three kinds of people: those who make things happen; those who watch things happen; those who wonder what the

can the time spent with or on people not so self-determining, self-motivating. They recognize just how powerful association is. My friend, the late Jim Rohn, said that given the bank balances of the five people you hang out with the most, he could “guess” your bank balance with great accuracy. He also noted that rich people have big libraries, poor people prefer big TV’s – a way of asking you what sort of ideas you associate with most. A lot of people with 52” plasmas and TV’s in three or four rooms of the house say they have no time to read. Most accomplishment or lack thereof is result of investment – not accident. Those who are endlessly, constantly disappointed with their incomes, businesses, lives, prefer believing in accident, luck, randomness as a comforting religion, but that’s delusional. Examination of most success reveals controllable causes, notably that person’s investments of his time, energy, money, in association with productive and provocative ideas, and people who are in the game, not in the bleachers.

heck happened, why, and why they were left out! There’s a lot of truth to the cliché. Most people act as if they are in a little boat set adrift in a vast ocean of circumstances beyond their control, rowing fast and frantically, looking about endlessly for someone to come to their rescue. Few are captains. It’s my observation that exceptionally successful people are very deliberative and purposeful about three things, in this regard. First, they act as captains. Every day – yes, every day – they set out on a charted course of their choosing; they never meander about aimlessly. Two, they are “makers”, creators, doers. They make things happen, make things move forward, get things done, sometimes through sheer force of will and refusal to accept or excuse less. In doing so, they are even, from time to time, news-makers, to their clientele, in their industry, in their community. Third, they seek association with people of this ilk, and abbreviate as best they

Steve has put probably more, I would say, thousands, and thousands, and thousands of dollars... I mean, I probably can't even put a true figure on it, because it keeps coming back, and keeps coming back, just more and more money all the time.”

“One suggestion that Steve gave me, well, without question, put $300,000 more in my bank account. And we are going to be using it forever. This is not a one-time deal. We’re going to be using this idea that Steve helped us with... and we’ll be using it until it doesn't keep working like it is. And so, the value over time could literally be way over even the $300,000 number.”

“He's helped me learn how to market my business, and today I can say that we're more successful than we've ever been… I needed to learn how to market the business better to create more revenue, and that's what Steve has helped me with. The financial difference is considerable. We've probably close to doubled our revenues. We're on track now to do another close to $500,000 more than we did last year. So that's awesome. I do owe all of that to Steve.”
