When we first started, I was terribly in debt and we were just a few months away from bankruptcy. We started seeing a boost right away in our business, we took what Steve’s given me and we just started implementing and implementing, and it’s just totally transformed my business. Steve has helped me with my laser focus, he helps me implement, he’s taken my business to a whole new level. We went from a half a million dollars to a million dollars in two years. It’s just an incredible experience to know that where you think you’re just dead and things are horrible, to now anything is possible. I can see taking this to a whole new three or four types of businesses -- it’s going to be huge. Steve is all business, he is an unbelievably smart, brilliant man. I can’t say enough about him. Everything he’s told me, I’ve made so much money it doesn’t matter what it costs. They don’t make enough money in this world that somebody could pay me so I would stop listening to Steve. Steve is the exact reason why I have a retirement fund now. It’s probably illegal how much fun I’m having!”

MOVIES

for Entrepreneurs By Steve Sipress In past issues of this magazine, I have shared lists of some of my favorite books and television shows for entrepreneurs.

usually in 3-D or IMAX. But I also enjoy watching movies at home in the comfort of either my indoor or outdoor living rooms.

This month, I’m going to provide another list for you: movies that can entertain us, while at the same time providing an insight into the up-and-down, struggle-andtriumph life of an entrepreneur.

My personal favorites are documentaries, historical movies, and those about business. Recently, I’ve enjoyed a few entrepreneur-themed films that I’d like to share with you here.

I make it a point to go to an actual theater to watch movies only when they have amazing special effects, and are

Here are five recent movies that I recommend for all entrepreneurs, in no particular order…

The Intern Robert DeNiro stars as a retiree who ventures back into the workforce to lend his considerable skills and experience to a fast-growing e-commerce startup company. Anne Hathaway does a great job of portraying a hard-driving, suddenly-successful entrepreneur, who is immensely talented and accomplished in her business, while at the same time often unsure and insecure, attempting to navigate the uncharted waters of the high-stakes world of starting and leading a fast-growing company in the heart of New York City while also having a fulfilling family life. You’ll see a lot of yourself and your employees in the various personalities in the film, and the situations they encounter, and you’ll experience a range of emotions as you follow the plot twists and turns.

Burnt

The Big Short

All entrepreneurs experience failure in our careers – some of us bounce back, and others don’t. In this film we get to follow Bradley Cooper as a celebrated chef looking to rebuild his career and his life after hitting rock bottom. Lessons abound in leadership, team building, perseverance, focus, work ethic, and the unbending dedication to a goal that so many real-life entrepreneurs experience throughout our lives. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll never think about a fine dining experience the same way again.

If you’re as big a fan as I am of renegades who think outside the box and transform industries, you’ll love this true story of four different brilliant minds who foresaw the collapse of the sub-prime mortgage market, back when people truly believed that “home prices can never go down.” Every one of us who’s ever been told that our ideas are crazy will be glued to this tale of power, arrogance, greed, and hubris – and will celebrate along with the underdogs who made a fortune as giants were toppled.

Joy

Unfinished Business

The cast of the award-winning Silver Linings Playbook is reunited, along with a host of other familiar actors, in this true story of Joy Mangano, an inventor who stopped at nothing and ignored all her naysayers in her quest to make her “Miracle Mop” a massive success. My beautiful wife Michele exclaimed “Hey! We have that mop!” – no doubt along with millions of other moviegoers. Although you have a basic idea of how it all turned out, since Mangano is an icon and pioneer of the television shopping industry, you will still be riveted by the guts and determination of this entrepreneur in the face of overwhelming challenges and setbacks. And it doesn’t hurt that superstar actress Jennifer Lawrence put in a masterful performance in the lead role, which won her the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.

Of course the challenges that the three employees and their families face as they attempt to launch their startup are tremendously exaggerated for comic effect. However, they will be extremely familiar to all entrepreneurs nonetheless. What wouldbe entrepreneur hasn’t wanted to walk out on an overbearing, arrogant boss and start up their own competing business on the spur of the moment? That’s exactly what Vince Vaughn’s character did, proclaiming “I actually have my own ideas” as he walks out on his arrogant sales manager in the opening scene, and then doing whatever it takes, despite comically massive obstacles, to make his dream a reality. This movie is at times hilarious and at times poignant – yet always bound to elicit a knowing “Yup, I’ve been there” nod of the head from anyone who’s ever started up his or her own business or attempted to close a major sale under daunting circumstances.

With the recent meteoric rise of a certain billionaire entrepreneur in the world of American presidential politics, there are bound to be more business- and entrepreneur-related movies on the horizon. I, for one, eagerly anticipate their release.

“Steve is all business. He is an unbelievably smart, brilliant, brilliant man. I can't say enough about him. Steve has put probably more, I would say, thousands, and thousands, and thousands of dollars... I mean, I probably can't even put a true figure on it, because it keeps coming back, and keeps coming back, just more and more money all the time.”

“One suggestion that Steve gave me, well, without question, put $300,000 more in my bank account. And we are going to be using it forever. This is not a one-time deal. We’re going to be using this idea that Steve helped us with... and we’ll be using it until it doesn't keep working like it is. And so, the value over time could literally be way over even the $300,000 number.”

Mary Forte Bensenville, IL

Keith Lee Seattle, WA

“He's helped me learn how to market my business, and today I can say that we're more successful than we've ever been… I needed to learn how to market the business better to create more revenue, and that's what Steve has helped me with. The financial difference is considerable. We've probably close to doubled our revenues. We're on track now to do another close to $500,000 more than we did last year. So that's awesome. I do owe all of that to Steve.”

ENTREPRENEUR Steve Sipress: Daryl Hill, what an honor and a pleasure it is to have you here on the Rhino Daily Podcast! Thanks for being here. Daryl Hill: It is an honor to be here, and I appreciate the invitation to go out and help your listeners out there with whatever it is that we’re going to talk about today.

Steve: That’s prophetic, because I absolutely guarantee we are going to help every business owner and entrepreneur listening to any one of these episodes that I got you for. So let’s get started, because one thing that really intrigues me – and I know that my listeners are going to love – is your personal background and story, because it’s really what’s led you to

be the person you are, that helps so many other business owners be the people they are. Can you tell us a little bit about your personal journey? Daryl: Absolutely. So Steve, I actually started out leaving South Florida and got an opportunity to go play football at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. That was an honor and a

I loved getting dirty, I loved being with the guys, I loved serving. There was no greater honor than leading Marines in a combat situation, and being out there serving them. privilege to do that, and as I left out of Annapolis, I went into the Marine Corps. I was selected to be a Marine officer, and I went into the infantry. As an infantry officer, you’re basically on the front lines all the time, out there with the Marines. I loved getting dirty, I loved being with the guys, I loved serving. There was no greater honor than leading Marines in a combat situation, and being out there serving them. I’ve always… One of the proudest, biggest moments of my life was crossing the line into Iraq and being, “Wow! We’re doing this thing!”

Daryl: Yeah. So I was sitting down and talking with him, and he told me that I should really look into getting some help for that, because you can’t recognize it. It was twenty years later for him, that he was at a point where there was a General, and the General said to him, “You ought to speak to the guys at Walter Reed” (that’s where the guys come back from Iraq and Afghanistan and they go through there). He went up to speak about what he was doing, and just about being in conflict, and the General took a look at him and said, “Dude, you need to get some help. And so he did. And I was sitting down with him, and he told me that I needed to get some help, and was like, “Well, I’m going to listen.” I got in touch with a gentleman named Tom Cavanaugh. Luckily, he entered my life and has been a savior. He’s been a mentor to me ever since then. It’s going on about five years now that I’ve known him. The guy’s amazing. I got a chance to spend some time with him. He taught me photo reading

first. Photo reading is where you can actually sit down and read a book in like an hour. I’m actually dyslexic by trade – I didn’t actually realize it until I was like 33. My Mom told me… She was on almost her deathbed, and my daughter was having problems with her medical stuff – reading and comprehension – and so she asked me to get in touch with her medical files. So I read through those, which was really an eye-opener for me. What ended up happening from there was I ended up going into the photo reading side of things. He taught me that, and then he taught me how to actually let go of my PTSD [Post Traumatic Stress Disorder] around dealing with the survivor stuff. That was really huge for me. It’s not that I don’t remember things that happened over the years, and being a part of that. It was just that I look at things a little bit differently now, and it’s enabled me to put things behind me. I’ve also let go of a lot of anger that I had – not just from Marine Corps stuff, but relationship things that had happened to me from

That was pretty awesome, to get a chance to lead the Marines. What ended up happening to me along the way was I ended up… We saw a lot of things, I’ve lost a lot of guys over the years through the Marine Corps – friends of mine, guys I served with – and I felt a little bit of “survivor’s guilt.” I didn’t actually realize I had done that for quite some time, but I had held a lot of anger, and had a lot of frustration, and I developed… I didn’t realize… I was sitting down with a Navy Seal, and he was a graduate as well. He was the lead Seal in charge of the Panama conflict that happened several years ago. You might remember that – where they lost a lot of Americans that day, and he was the one in charge.

I look at things a little bit differently now, and it’s enabled me to put things behind me. I’ve also let go of a lot of anger that I had.

Steve: Well, I remember it – but not nearly as vividly as you do, of course.

EXPERT INTERVIEW

my childhood – things of that nature. And I realized something about myself: That when I got a chance to go back and do some more work with Tom, over the course of the five years I’ve been working on myself working with him, is what I ended up discovering is that what I was really good with was helping people. People have always naturally been drawn to talking to me about… It was not uncommon that people would always say, “I’ve never shared that before in my life.”

I’ve been honestly gifted by God with this, and he basically just has people show up in my life every week, and that’s what’s been happening now, is now that I’m trained on how to actually go out and help people, because I discovered within myself that that’s what my calling actually is.

That happens all the time with me. It would happen with my Marines, it would happen when people would just be walking down the street. I’ve been honestly gifted by God with this, and he basically just has people show up in my life every week, and that’s what’s been happening now, is now that I’m trained on how to actually go out and help people, because I discovered within myself that that’s what my calling actually is. I was sitting down with an entrepreneur, and I helped him overcome some tremendous challenges and things that he didn’t even know were buried in his mind, and when he was able to overcome those things, he literally quit his job… they parted ways with a company he was at. That was a good thing for him, and he started his own business, and now he’s doing really well. He went out and crushed it the next month, and right after that, he said to me, “Dude, you need to do this for a living. You need to be the guy in the chair. I know you fought it for a long time, but you need to be that guy.” And ever since then, that’s all I’ve been doing is being that guy, and people now fly in from around the world to come see me. I have clients all over the world in different countries – Mexico, Spain, Australia, just all over the place.

Honestly, people that know me, people that listen to this podcast: If you’re out there and you’re struggling, you’re not sure what your purpose is, you’re not sure about how you’re going to get to that next level in your mind… I’ve worked with people, in the course of a few hours, and there was a gentleman who was having trouble selling, and he didn’t feel right with what he was doing. There was something holding him back because he had some subconscious thing that he was not deserving, and he went out that night

and sat down on a sales presentation and completely changed his mindset, and is now at a point where he is ready to get up onstage and speak in front of people and just go out and crush it. So that’s my background, as far as how I got to what I’m doing right now. I love it, I love helping people, I love serving. I come from a servant’s heart. I can sit down with a General one session, and I’m sitting down with a guy who has nothing in the next. One of the things I like to

EXPERT INTERVIEW

There’s PTSD, which stands for “Post Traumatic Stress,” and a lot of people associate that with military and combat – things of that nature. But that same thing happens in business every single day.

give back and work with guys who come out of the military and have some post-traumatic stress around conflicts they’ve actually dealt with, and help them with those. For every entrepreneur I take on, I like to take on another veteran that’s out there and help them at the same time, so I’m actually giving back to where I came from. Steve: First of all, that’s a pretty amazing story. I know that you’re just at the tip of the iceberg with that story, but what I have to thank you for is there’s literally got to be tens of thousands, or more, of veterans that have gone through PTSD and gone through all kinds of traumatic things, and yet I don’t know of any – or there must be a few – that are doing what you’re doing. Maybe they’re counseling other PTSD war victims, but they’re not making the leap to the world that I love. I love the veterans, but I love small business owners, and I know that over the time that I have you here on the podcast, you’re going to let us know some of the ways you’re really helping a lot of small business owners with getting over things that they have to get over, similar to how combat veterans have to get over

things. So I really have to thank you and commend you for the road that you’re taking to help business owners. Because the rippling effect that that has on the rest of society and the economy is fantastic! So let me get into it… I know that we only have a few minutes left here on today’s segment. Can you just touch on one of the issues that maybe people wouldn’t think, as a business owner, that they might be suffering from that’s very similar to what a combat veteran suffers from? Daryl: That’s interesting that you bring that up. There’s PTSD, which stands for “Post Traumatic Stress,” and a lot of people associate that with military and combat – things of that nature. But that same thing happens in business every single day. I can speak from a personal place where I was in a position where we would loan out $40,000 to an individual, and this individual was supposed to pay us back for my business, and did not. I ended up basically getting conned out of the money. So I could have held onto a lot of anger, I could have held onto not trusting anybody who was out there after doing something like that, but I don’t anymore.

June 2016

I was able to let go of that. Because I was able to let go of that, I was able to move on. Versus I talked to an individual yesterday, and this individual wants to take his business, which did seven figures last year, and he wants to take it to the $5 million to $10 million range. He had a limiting belief in his mind that he can’t go out and find good people, because he’s gotten screwed over in the past. So the question I would have for people and business owners who are listening to this is, “Is it worth holding onto that belief, staying at the million dollars, or would you rather let go of that and move into the $5 million to $10 million range?” Does that make sense? Steve: That’s a fantastic way to end our first segment here today. I want to get into that in more detail tomorrow. Because I asked you for one, and you already gave two and I know there’s a lot more that we can help out the listeners. So I know they’re all coming back for tomorrow’s segment! Why You Think I’m Prideful…

If you are like most people, then you probably think I am pretty prideful. Maybe you have had the chance to learn more about me and know this isn’t really the case, but when most people meet me they tend to think I am pretty full of myself. Admit it. You thought it. The truth is that we entrepreneurs can’t live our lives quite the same way the rest of the world lives…and that goes double for those of us that are experts in the business of giving advice. Let me demystify this for you. Most people are employees, who get a job with a resume that boasts of their accomplishments to their potential new boss. Then, once they have the job, their lives are all about just doing that job. Entrepreneurs and business owners, on the other hand, are always looking for another client – and clients are their bosses, so to speak. In one way or another, we expert entrepreneurs are always giving out our “resume.” That’s why I always say, “I’m not bragging. I am applying for a job. I want to be your marketer, publicist, and agent.” You see, people understand and expect you to brag when applying for a job. People just forget that we entrepreneurs are just about almost always applying for a “job” or a client. Sometimes even you as the entrepreneur forget that as well.

You see, you have to answer this very, very important question. It’s just two words, but it’s always there: “Why you?” Why you and not someone else? Why your company and not someone else? Why you and not nothing else? You see, you are even competing with people who are doing nothing at all. You have to know how to talk about yourself and inspire action in every audience. You need to share your social proof, your third party endorsements. Your testimonials, awards, books, articles, media features, interviews, degrees, certifications, celebrity clients, influential customers and accomplishments are all worth sharing strategically at the right time and in the right place when answering the question “Why you?” Sometimes that means sounding a little prideful, but there is a definite difference between being prideful and sounding prideful. Whether you’re an employee or an entrepreneur, good people will never fault you for applying for a job.

GREED By Perry Marshall

Have you ever….

With that in mind….

…When’s the last time you turned on CNN and heard an encouraging story about business owners doing good in the world?

Tapped a line of credit or 2nd mortgage so you could give your employees their paycheck?

Paid off all your vendors and creditors, even though it meant canceling a longawaited vacation?

Heard about someone in need and helped them out, even though you knew you would eventually end up borrowing the money – you didn’t have it but you gave anyway because it was the right thing to do?

When’s the last time you heard somebody in the media or education system say, “We need to build up entrepreneurs, because new businesses are foundation of our communities”? For all those who assume us money-grubbing entrepreneurs are driven by greed, selfishness and ego, let me share with you the results of a study by the Center for Data Analysis and the Heritage Foundation:

THE ENTREPRENEURS AND OUR INSATIABLE GREED

June 2016

Entrepreneurs understand abundance. My experience of entrepreneurs is we overwhelmingly tend to take care of everybody else before we worry about ourselves.

Looks like entrepreneurs are TWICE as generous as everyone else. ESPECIALLY the ones with low incomes. Why is that? What’s going on here? It’s real simple. Most people only understand scarcity. Entrepreneurs understand abundance. My experience of entrepreneurs is we overwhelmingly tend to take care of everybody else before we worry about ourselves. My friend, if you tapped every resource to pay everyone fairly, and you went to bed not knowing how tomorrow’s bills were going to get paid, then at least you had faith in the goodness of providence and the power of imagination and resourcefulness to find a solution.

will present itself. We just have faith that it will. I don’t know what problem you face today, but I know that one of two things is true:

1 2

Someone somewhere has already solved it, or The ability to solve it WILL be given to you

When you find the success you seek, you deserve it. The talking heads on TV may not appreciate us. But we appreciate each other. And I appreciate you. Seize the Day.

Entrepreneur Magazine says: “Perry Marshall is the #1 author and world’s most-quoted consultant on Google Advertising. He has helped over 100,000 advertisers save literally billions of dollars in Adwords stupidity tax.” He is referenced across the Internet and by The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, the Chicago Tribune and Forbes Magazine.

THIS is why people in the modern world have three meals a day and microwave ovens and beds to sleep in and health care and straight teeth and computers and movies and modern music. Because… somebody had faith in the power of ingenuity. They dreamed and schemed and innovated and gave until it hurt. Believing that somehow, somewhere, success would show up when it was most needed.

MANNY’S BLOG

Come to Manny’s Romantic Rescue! Start spreading the news: I’ve decided to abandon my “love ‘em and leave ‘em” ways and make a serious effort to find Miss Right. Yes, you heard it here first: I will be periodically informing you of my progress in settling down with the girl of my dreams. (No, not those “Nightmare On Elm Street” dreams where Freddy Krueger has the dreaded vacuum cleaner attachments on his hands. The other dreams.)

are “I’ve been needing another chew toy!” I’ve even thought about calling in some favors and seeing if a canine could appear on “The Bachelor,” but I would have trouble with the part about passing out roses. I’m barred from being around roses ever since the infamous Michele’s Rose Garden Incident of 2013.

Skeptical? Think I can’t woo a girl? Give me a little moonlight and I can really woooooooooo her. (I could probably collect a lot of old shoes for an eventual honeymoon vehicle, too, for that matter.)

What would I do on dates that are meant to lead to a longterm relationship? Perhaps we could go to a romantic comedy. I would love to see “You’ve Got Mailman” or “About A Good Boy, Good Boy” again. Surely she would appreciate that Gene Kelley movie about proper sanitation by pet owners (“Scoopin’ In the Rain”).

There are a lot of qualities I’m looking for in a girlfriend. Grandpa wants me to find an old-fashioned girl. Grandpa gets a little carried away; he wants me to find one who lives in a log dog house and grinds her own kibble while watching out for raids by Apaches.

I could captivate her with some of my favorite music, like “Unchained Melody” or the Good Sofa song (“Up Where We Belong”). Let’s not forget Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Sniffed Your….” (Well, perhaps we should forget it in mixed company.)

Certainly, my potential life mate should like me for myself and not be a gold digger. (If she wants to dig bones, I can live with that. I’m very open-minded about letting her support me, as long as it makes her happy.)

Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself (I often do that when I’m chasing my tail), but I’m already thinking about an engagement, marriage, and a family. I just hope I get to shake off all over everyone after this “shower” thing I hear about.
