SWIMMING

AGAINST THE TIDE Think of the phrase ‘swimming against the tide’, and you’ll often conjure up the image of a struggling swimmer, trying to combat the zesty waves that are determined to push him back each time. Director RS Durai Senthilkumar’s film Ethir Neechal talks about the theme of swimming against the tide to achieve your goal, but packages it with so much humour and panache that it is no wonder the film is a summer bumper hit. The star cast includes Sivakarthikeyan, Priya Anand and Nandita in the lead roles. The cherry on top is Dhanush, who dons the producer’s hat. Audiences are going berserk clapping and whistling when he makes a special appearance in a song. Bootylicious Nayanthara has also shaken a leg in the same song. Anirudh Ravichander’s music has been topping charts for weeks now and has effectively contributed to the super success of the film. The most popular numbers are of course Nijamellam Maranthupochu sung by Dhanush and Anirudh himself, and the title track bringing Yo Yo Honey Singh, Hiphop Tamizha Adhi and Anirudh together. THE VIEW FROM BEHIND THE LENS

Making the film like a maverick, director Durai is a force to reckon with, says Pavithra Srinivasan.

Director Durai is overjoyed by the response to Ethir Neechal. “This is the story of someone you see in day-to-day life,� he says, voice almost hoarse from over-use. “The hero has a sort of strange difficulty – it’s something we, the normal people, have also faced. Almost 50 to 70 people out of a 100, would have encountered it. The film is all about how he takes it head on, and comes out on top.�

I was introduced by Bharathirajaa and " / 6 * work with Ameer Sultan, Mani Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma, Puri Jagannadh, Vinayan, Unnikrishnan and Ranjit. Quite a fantastic list, right? What has your biggest failure been? Not being recognised as much as I wanted to, even after getting a National Award. I’m happy people have liked my performances. But I haven’t worked with top actors. What does success mean to you? More than being number one, it is the recognition from the audience that matters the most. Even now people come up to me and compliment me What does failure mean to you? When a movie doesn’t do well, it can’t be blamed on the heroine, saying her movie was a failure. What have your biggest successes been? I think just anything to do with movies. I am thankful to God for making me what I am. Having come down from the US to make career in movies, with so many people to my support, I cannot be anything but grateful. What has your biggest failure been? You ought to be clear about what you want to do in life. When that doesn’t happen, it is a failure. Life is a big journey. It’s an experience. And you need to be strong while going through it. I do have two big regrets in my life: one, that I could not pursue sports during my school or college days and two, that I never learnt to play the guitar. That’s why I insist that kids take to as much sports as they like and learn whatever they want to. What does success mean to you? When audiences cheer and clap for my 8 6 very meaningful and rewarding. Another thing is balancing one’s career and family, and doing justice to both while juggling all of it. It is not only about being happy, but about people around us being happy too – so the key is to keep others around you happy and you yourself being happy about it. What does failure mean to you? I don’t think of these things in life. You just keep going, and it all sorts itself out. I don’t make success a priority in life; I just simply keep going about my work. It is the choices else. Just be clear about your priorities in life, and that’s all that makes a difference. Do you have a fear of failure? You feel scared to be happy for long because of a failure at some point in life, a climbdown. I feel I am the happiest when I feel that I have done my best. A journalist once asked me, ‘What if Patutheeveeran didn’t do well?’ I said I felt I had done my best and I was happy about it. I wouldn’t want someone to come and tell me, ‘I wish you had done this better.’ People who, in your opinion, have handled success well? Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, A R Rahman, my brother, are all perfect examples. I admire and appreciate their way of handling success. Someone who you admire for handling failure well? My father. Coming from a small town and making it big is no mean achievement. I think he is amazing for the way he handled his tough times and his lows in life. I think one has to be close enough to know how they handle these things – and I don’t know anyone else as closely as I know my father.
