WELCOME Thank you for taking the time to read our University-level Courses Guide. We are justifiably proud to offer a diverse range of high-quality professional, vocational and technical university-level courses, many delivered in partnership with Plymouth University. Most of our Foundation Degrees give progression onto further study at Plymouth University, which will enable achievement of an Honours Degree from start to finish within three years. We offer a comparable, rather than identical, experience to studying at university. What differentiates us is that we pride ourselves on our friendly and supportive environment, where lecture and tutorial groups are kept small to ensure that you get the most from your learning experience and are able to get to know your lecturers and fellow students. To make sure that you achieve the knowledge and skills that employers are looking for, all of our university-level courses have been developed in conjunction with employers, and many of our courses will see you working with industry professionals on work-based projects.

City College has made a real commitment to ensuring that our students leave us prepared to make the most of every opportunity that presents itself and to be able to make a contribution from day one to their community and workplace. To support our students in achieving this we offer access to a wide range of activities to help you gain and develop the key employability and enterprise skills and attributes. Our proximity to, and partnership with, Plymouth University enables you to benefit from both College and University facilities and services. Be part of it - come and study at City College for a quality university-level qualification.

DAVID TROTT

Accounting and Finance coincidence that I went on to achieve a first class degree.

After leaving the College to complete his final year at Plymouth University, David achieved a BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance. He is now a Management Accountant based at Torbay Hospital. David has just completed his first two exams with the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and is awaiting the results.

“The classes were much smaller than those at university, which meant I gained a much more intense and personal education. Having more contact time definitely helped me to understand the more complex accounting modules.

“I hadn’t been in education for a number of years and most of my outgoings were based on a full-time wage. I knew I would still need to work part-time whilst studying and so I decided to apply to City College. I thought the College would provide me with greater flexibility than Plymouth University, so that I could earn while I learned. I had also heard great reviews in terms of the teaching standards at the College, and it is no

“The friendly, approachable and very supportive academic staff really made my experience. The College supported me throughout my first two years and helped me to acquire the highest grades. They also supported me throughout my third year progression application to do my final year at Plymouth University. Without this, I wouldn’t have gone on to achieve a BA (Hons) degree”.

I thought a Foundation Degree would help me to make a decision as to what I wanted to specialise in before heading off to university. “The College offered me the option to explore all avenues and aspects of forensic science. The modules on the course were very broad and offered many stimulating topics of study and this allowed me to discover what I found particularly interesting. “The passion of the lecturers was without doubt a key memory for me. They were very dedicated to the students and always helped those that struggled with any aspect of the course. Studying at the College just strengthened the

knowledge that I wanted a career in this field and gave me the skills and knowledge so I could apply for a degree. “After graduating from the College, I went on to do a BSc in Forensic Science. I excelled in the analytical aspects of the course and ended up researching the volatile organic compounds from decomposing mammalian remains, which became the topic of my dissertation. Having done so well in the project and other modules, I was able to apply for a PhD position at Leicester University skipping the normal route of a Master’s Degree. “My PhD is in collaboration with Leicester and Nottingham police, and I work with international research groups in Australia. I’m hoping to revolutionise the training of police cadaver dogs to further develop the science of forensics.”

ROBYN LOCKHART

Hospitality and Tourism Management

Robyn studied for a Foundation Degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management at the College. She is currently the Master of Ceremonies and Event Administrator at The Moorland Garden Hotel. “I chose to study at City College because I wanted to further develop my education, but have the freedom of independent learning. The College seemed like the perfect place to start on the path to my chosen career. The environment was quite different to that of university; the classes were much smaller so there was a lot more contact time with our lecturers and it was also far more affordable.

“I loved the lecturers; their support helped me get through some hard times while studying, and also their sense of humour made learning so much more fun. I gained so many skills whilst at the College, which still assist me every day in the working environment. “I went on to complete my full degree at Plymouth University, which I could not have done without studying the Foundation Degree at the College. I would not be where I am today if it was not for my lecturers and the College’s support - it helped me grow as a person and learn so much about my trade.”

Strength Conditioning and Sports Conditioning After graduating from City College, Dan completed his BSc in Health and Fitness at Plymouth University. He has gone on to secure a scholarship, and study a Master’s Degree in America where he researches, teaches and coaches. Currently in discussions with sponsors and clients, Dan hopes to continue his studies with an applied PhD. “Studying with the strength and conditioning lecturers at City College set the foundations for all the work I have been fortunate enough to be involved with since. I thoroughly enjoyed the course, particularly the application of theoretical knowledge through working with elite level athletes, such as those studying at the College, on sports scholarships at the University or playing with the local professional sports teams. For an aspiring coach, being so hands-on whilst furthering my understanding of the subject area was the best way to learn. “After graduating, I used the connections I had made during the course to find work as a strength and conditioning coach for Plymouth

Argyle Academy and under 18 teams, alongside working with athletes from a variety of sports. It was immensely satisfying to see both the students and athletes we worked with adapt and improve with the support of the work we were delivering. “I moved to the US in 2015 to take up a graduate assistantship at Florida Atlantic University. As part of my role at the University, I teach aspiring undergraduate coaches, conduct sports and conditioning-specific research, and study for my Masters in the evenings. Aside from the University, I am developing my skill set as a practitioner through my work as the First Team Physical Preparation Coach for Boca Raton FC. I have a private client base that I work with both in person and online. “I believe my experiences at City College the research-based theoretical understanding, practical skills and the connections they gave me - complemented each other well to offer me the greatest opportunities and the best start in the exercise science profession.”

UCAS TARIFF POINTS SYSTEM What is the UCAS tariff? It’s the conversion of further education, level 3 qualifications, such as BTECs, AS and A Levels, VCEs and OCRs etc, into a points system that universities can use to evaluate applications and make offers. How does it work? Each qualification and grade is worth a number of points. All grades and qualifications are added together to give a total tariff point score. Don’t miss the deadlines! UCAS has a series of deadlines for students to meet, which you can find on their website, www.ucas.com. Deadlines are important; please make sure you know when to apply.
