A Levels
The first year of an A Level, the AS Level, is a standalone qualification which can contribute to your final offering of UCAS points for university entrance. The second year, the A2, completes the traditional A Level. Most universities require three full A Level subjects as their standard entry. What do I need to get on the course? As well as coming in for an interview, you will need to have the following: • at least five grade Cs at GCSE, including English and maths • a grade B in maths, science, history and English to study these subjects at A Level. Please note: offers are made subject to obtaining GCSE grades which, against national averages, indicate you would obtain at least the lowest pass grades for your chosen subjects. If your grades do not match these requirements please contact Student Services on 01752 305803 to discuss alternative options.
Ancillary Course Fee For some of our courses you will be required to pay a yearly ancillary course fee (a contribution towards the materials you will be supplied with) for books, equipment and any costs for course trips. The maximum fee you will be expected to pay is £20 per year.
GCSE Full-time Programme The College offers an intensive one-year, full-time programme of GCSEs with tutorial support. You can study up to six GCSEs from the following subjects; maths, English, science, additional science, psychology, sociology, history and geography. The programme will give you a broad range of qualifications, good foundations for further academic study, and an opportunity to update previous qualifications and improve your grades. Apprenticeships
Many of our students find that once they have taken the first step and joined one of our Apprenticeship programmes, they are eager to progress into higher education. This is seen as a good way of gaining promotion and increasing their earning power. How does it work? You can expect to work between 30 and 40 hours per week (including time spent at the College) and be paid a wage. You will be entitled to at least 20 days paid holiday each year, plus public and bank holidays. Progression Apprenticeships are a great way to progress your education and improve employability. You will apply the practical skills and knowledge you are learning at College directly into the workplace. Usually, you will start on an Intermediate Apprenticeship (level 2). There is then the potential to progress onto an Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3) and then a Higher Apprenticeship (level 4), which is a degree level qualification. Alternatively, you can use an Advanced Apprenticeship to progress onto other full-time higher education courses. Of course, the qualification will be proof of your valuable skills and employability for any employer should you wish to remain in the workplace.
Case Study “I left school with no GCSEs and started an Apprenticeship so I could pursue a career in engineering. I am now working as a full-time employee at Pipex px ® and have recently been promoted to a Trainee Project Manager!” Pariz Reed

We were given an insight into the whole business - you worked in the restaurant, at the front of house, so you understood the importance of customer service. “While studying on the professional chefs course I worked in a kitchen at an exclusive hotel based in South Devon. Once qualified I returned to the hotel where I worked for three years, before moving to London and working in a number of elite restaurants. “On returning to the South West I worked as a head chef before buying my own restaurant which I now run with my wife Clare, also a former City College student. “The whole college experience really matures you; it gives you self-esteem and builds your confidence. Case Study “As a television editor of nine years, my two years at the College seem a long time ago now, but I am almost certain I wouldn’t have got to where I am now without doing the media course. The guidance and support that was offered, along with the training I undertook, provided me with a fantastic basis from which my career was able to grow. “After university I worked for an independent television company as an edit runner. The pay was poor and the hours very long, but that was the test to see if I was cut out for the job! “After becoming a junior editor and learning the ropes I was offered my first series. Since then as a freelance editor I have made programmes for all the major broadcasters, including BBC1, 2 and 3, ITV1 and ITV2, Channel 4, five and Sky One. “I love my job; it allows me to be more creative than you might think. “My passion and desire to pursue a career in the Royal Navy started when I was very young. My dad would return home, after being away with the Navy for months at a time. When home, he would tell me stories of exotic places he had been, people he had met, combat situations he had been in and the medals he had been awarded. This all sparked my desire to have a successful career within the Royal Navy. “I enrolled on a two year BTEC Diploma in Public Services at the College and progressed to the foundation degree. The foundation degree has been one of the best experiences of my life! Over the past two years, it has taught me to see both sides of an argument. I have a new found confidence and I have gained knowledge and skills for employment in the delivery, management and evaluation of public services. “I will graduate this summer, and will join HMS Raleigh as an able seaman to begin my career in the Royal Navy, where I hope to use all the knowledge and skills I have learnt over the past four years at the College.”

College is all about moving onwards and upwards. Colleges have an important role to play in helping young people make the transition from school, to university or into the world of work. To do that successfully, we believe that we need to prepare our students both in terms of achieving the qualifications they need, but also acquiring the skills and competencies required of young adults today. We do everything possible to see that our students achieve all they can, leave with real job prospects and are ready to move on. Achievement City College Plymouth is one of the highest performing colleges of further education in the country. We are first in the South West, and 5th nationally, for the achievement of our students. This means that our students are more likely to achieve their qualification, and are therefore more likely to progress on to university or their chosen career path than if they studied elsewhere. Employability All our courses are designed to give young people the skills and qualifications that employers are looking for, as well as those softer skills that employers value so highly, including: • self-management - the right attitude and professional appearance • enthusiasm - a positive approach • motivation and initiative confident thinking and problem solving 88
• knowledge - understanding the world of work • team work - working together and communicating • essential skills - using words, numbers and computers • practical employment skills - effective CV writing, self promotion and interview techniques. These key employability factors are reinforced throughout the College, whether in the classroom or tutorial sessions, or through our dedicated employability centre, theworkspace, which works closely with employers to ensure that our students have access to employment opportunities. The centre runs regular workshops for students on CV writing and interview techniques, as well as organising seminars with local employers who give up their time to tell our students what they want from prospective employees! What’s more, many of our courses offer additional qualifications which are appealing to employers - for example first aid, food hygiene, and health and safety.
Whatever career path they decide to follow, you can be guaranteed that your son or daughter will have access to the best facilities together with dedicated, enthusiastic staff who are experts in their field, to support their learning. Enhancing academic study with real-life work experience really gives our students an advantage - what could be more important in today’s competitive job market?

Why Choose City College Plymouth?
Employer Endorsement Scheme We have excellent links with employers through our Employer Endorsement Scheme, which means that our students can benefit from being able to access: • full and part-time employment via our jobs board • valuable tips and techniques to use in interviews from recruitment professionals • work experience placements in a range of sectors • community-based projects through volunteering. This scheme not only supports the College’s employability agenda, providing students with access to activities and work opportunities that enhance their employability skills, but also means employers have access to a pool of work-ready young people. Here are a few examples of how working with local businesses really benefits our students.
“All learners develop very good personal, social and employability skills.” Ofsted 2012
Outside the classroom There’s a whole lot more to life at City College Plymouth than simply studying. We want your son or daughter to get the most out of their free time, so we offer a diverse programme of social, cultural and sporting activities and enrichment that will give them an exceptional experience. Our Student Liaison team encourages all students to get involved in a dynamic package of activities that underpin the Government’s Every Student (Child) Matters agenda by promoting personal safety, healthy lifestyle choices, positive ways to enjoy and achieve, and opportunities to volunteer and make a positive contribution to the student and local community. All of our activities are designed to allow anyone to get involved irrespective of their age or special abilities. We are proud to offer a rich and vibrant package that allows students to not just make friends and have fun outside the classroom, but also gives them an opportunity to develop personal skills, including confidence, leadership and teamwork.

Leane Bramhall, Marketing Director at Burts Chips, said: “Burts Chips is a business that cares about its community and working with City College Plymouth plays a key role in widening the impact we have. Working closely with the College we will be developing a partnership that benefits the business as well as young people in the region.”
Anthony Irving, Operations Director at Kier Western, says of the scheme: “Kier is a long standing member of the Plymouth construction community and has benefited from the training provided by City College Plymouth over a period of decades. The Employer Endorsement Scheme provides us with an opportunity to declare that relationship. Moreover, it provides a forum to share our expertise, to coordinate site visits (that are so influential on young students), to provide work placements and to support other curriculum events. The Kier Construction team looks forward to a continued partnership with City College Plymouth and to taking part in this important scheme that will enrich the day-to-day activities of students and our own staff.”

Support at Every Step
There are a number of ways that the College ensures your son or daughter receives all the educational and personal support they will need to complete their studies. Welfare The College has a team of Student Liaison Support Workers whose role is to provide informal support to students who are struggling with their course for whatever reason. They work with personal tutors and other College staff to identify students who need help. They then work on a one-to-one basis in whatever way helps the students to improve their attendance, enjoy College life and bring them back on track. Support includes: • texting students to remind them of course deadline dates • accessing Discretionary Learner Support funding to help with travel costs • supporting students to help them complete coursework • one-to-one support and advice • running team relationship building sessions • drop-in sessions for young carers or young parents.
Counselling The College Counsellors offer a free confidential service to all students. They are highly qualified and have significant experience of working with a wide range of issues in a nonjudgemental way. The purpose of the service is to help support students in finding a more effective way of managing any difficulties that are affecting their health, emotional well-being and safety. Personal tutors Each student on a full-time or substantial part-time (over 150 guided learning hours) course is assigned a personal tutor. The tutor is normally a member of the course teaching team. The personal tutor is there to offer help and support with all matters relating to the student’s studies. They are also responsible for monitoring the student’s progress with them. We encourage parents and carers to meet with the personal tutors, and to keep in contact.
90
Tutorial programme All full-time students will have: • a regular individual personal and academic review with their tutor to ensure that they are on track to achieve their qualification and have planned their next steps • a regular group tutorial to focus on course concerns, self development, the progression of the student after College (including, where appropriate, university entry procedures) and equal opportunities awareness.

Support at Every Step

Safeguarding incorporates a range of matters including health and safety (including e-safety), protection from abuse or exploitation, anti-bullying (including cyber-bullying) and associated matters. The College is an active member of the Plymouth Safeguarding Children Board, and works with other agencies to ensure that its students are safe at College.

Parents
Extra help in the classroom The College is committed to helping all students by giving them support to be successful on their chosen course of study. If your son or daughter has a disability that may affect their learning or participation in their course, we need to be told so that we can ensure they receive the right support and assistance. The information is only used for support purposes.
Careers guidance service The careers guidance service can help your son or daughter make appropriate choices now and throughout their time at the College. In addition to having our own advisers, we work in partnership with Careers South West. Students can use the service in a number of ways, including individual guidance interviews with a qualified careers adviser and careers information resources. Drop-in sessions are available at both centres during term time.
Students can tell us about this on their application form, at interview, at enrolment, during induction or at any time during their course of study. We respect a student’s right not to tell us about a disability, but the College may not be able to provide the level of support that would best help.

Keeping You Informed
We aim to ensure that parents and carers receive full information about the course, College support and student progress for full-time students under the age of 18 at the start of their course. We will also be actively encouraging your involvement. If a student is over the age of 18 at enrolment, the College needs their permission to discuss issues regarding their studies with you. You are able to make appointments to see College staff to discuss your son or daughter’s progress at any time, but particularly if you have concerns. Progress reports Each student will have their own Individual Learning Plan, which the tutor uses to record progress and targets. This is used to help the tutors write a report on each student’s progress twice a year. A copy of the report will be sent to parents and carers of those students aged 18 or under on 1 September of that academic year.
Attendance Regular attendance is key to success and students are required to attend every lesson, unless they are ill or there is some other genuine reason. The College has a system in place if a student’s academic work is slipping or if their attendance is beginning to be of concern, where parents and carers of students under the age of 18 (on 1 September each year) are kept fully informed every step of the way. Students are expected to attend regularly, and if a student is not able to attend, for whatever reason, they are expected to let the College know in advance. A register is taken at every class and any absences will be followed up by the course tutor. It is worth pointing out that some financial support schemes are based on 100% attendance.

Qualifications Explained
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) NVQs are work-related qualifications which apply the practical skills and knowledge learnt at College, directly into the workplace. They can be studied full-time at the College or part-time while in a job, work placement or on an Apprenticeship. Apprenticeships For students who would prefer to follow a work-based route, there is a choice between an Apprenticeship (level 2), an Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3) or a Higher Apprenticeship (level 4). Apprentices are employed and receive a wage whilst training with an employer. GCSEs The College offers a one-year, intensive full-time programme consisting of up to six GCSEs, academic development and tutorial support. It gives a broad range of qualifications, good foundations for further academic study and an opportunity to update previous qualifications and improve GCSE grades. A Levels (AS and A2 Levels) The first year of an A Level is a stand-alone qualification called an AS Level, which can be topped up with a further years’ study to a full A Level (an A2). City College Plymouth is the largest provider of A Levels in the area, where students can study a programme of A Levels on their own, or combine them with a choice of vocational options.
94
BTEC Subsidiary and Extended Diplomas These are two-year vocational qualifications which blend practical, career focussed skills and academic study to prepare young people for direct entry into employment or enable them to move on to higher education. Students will study for a subsidiary diploma in year one and then continue on to the extended diploma in the second year. Level 1 and 2 Certificates and Diplomas These are one-year courses which allow students to progress either into employment or onto higher level study. All our level 1 and 2 qualifications have progression routes onto the next level of study (subject to satisfactory performance). For many students these courses offer an ideal opportunity to increase skills, learn in a more hands-on way and improve future career prospects. Level 3 Diplomas These are two-year vocational qualifications which blend practical, career-focussed skills and academic study to prepare students for direct entry into employment or enable them to move on to higher education (such as a university-level course). Some diplomas consist of more than one qualification and many offer additional qualifications to support applications to work or university following on from the course.

Qualifications Explained
2 /1 11 20 Ta bl es Ra te s uc ce s lS na io
Being able to take students right up to university level study - and beyond - is one of the key differences between college and school. It allows strong relationships to form, and the range of ages at both our main sites creates a mature learning environment.
City College Plymouth is No 1 in the South West for the achievement of all its students.*
at
Foundation Degrees These are industry-related higher education qualifications equivalent to the first and second stage of a degree, developed by the College with employers. They are designed to include workplace experience, learning and assessment, whilst also providing a route for progression to the final year of a named honours degree at specified universities.
Moving on up The College offers courses at all levels to enable your son or daughter to progress and achieve the highest qualification they need to meet their goals.
*N
Higher National Certificates These are higher-level qualifications which relate to a particular employment sector, and tend to be equivalent to the first and/or second stage of a degree. They are for students who are aged over 18 and have successfully completed an A Level, extended diploma or other advanced level course (level 3).
Before students join the College, staff will give advice on the appropriate level of qualification for them, and when at College, will discuss progression onto higher level qualifications.
Parents
Functional skills Functional skills qualifications have replaced key skills. Functional skills are a new suite of qualifications for maths, English and information communication technology (ICT), and are very popular with employers. If students develop their skills in numeracy, communication and ICT they are more likely to achieve their main qualification and be successful when they progress to the next level or into employment.
