WELCOME Come to City College and be part of something great - gain a qualification, work experience and employability skills, and get that job or university place. At City College, we help to make learning relevant, because we know that if you understand how skills and knowledge apply to the real world you are much more likely to be motivated to learn. That means providing real working environments where you learn and train, building work experience into all of our study programmes and involving employers to ensure that the skills you develop are the ones that will make you employable. As the leading provider of professional and technical training in the South West, we use our strong links with businesses and local industries to give our students the best start to their careers with access to work experience opportunities and potential employment upon successful completion of their study programme. I wish you success in your studies and hope your time with the College is enjoyable.

CHOOSING YOUR FUTURE Did you know that a level 3 BTEC is equivalent to three A Levels and will earn you UCAS points for entry to higher education? Visit www.cityplym.ac.uk/university-level-courses for more information.
Don’t just join a course, choose a career! We want to make sure that what you learn at the College is relevant when you go out into the workplace - that is why local employers have an input into how our courses are designed. It also means working with you to understand what you want to achieve and setting out a plan to get there tailored around your goals and career aspirations. Our partnerships with employers mean that you start to build important contacts before you finish your studies, so you really will stand head and shoulders above the competition in an ever competitive job market.
How do I decide which is the right course for me? There is a lot to think about when choosing which career you would like to follow and many things can affect your decision. Look through our courses and ask yourself: • what are my qualifications? • what subjects do I enjoy? • do I prefer a practical, hands-on approach or a more academic route? • what are my hobbies and interests? • what do I want to do after College?

You’ll also have access to work placements and experience to boost your knowledge, your CV and your confidence - giving you the edge in a competitive job market. How does it work?
• You can expect to work between 30 and 40 hours per week (including time spent at the College) and be paid a wage. • The majority of apprentices spend four days a week with their employer and one day at the College. • You will be entitled to at least 20 days paid holiday each year. • Most of your training will be in the workplace, but you may need to come into College for assessment or on a day-release basis. • You will be visited regularly in your workplace by a member of College staff to keep you on the right track and support you to complete your Apprenticeship programme. • On average, apprentices earn around £150 per week - which, in addition to all of the other benefits, is pretty good! • During your Apprenticeship you will work towards an NVQ qualification. The type and level of qualification will depend on what kind of Apprenticeship you are on.
Where will an Apprenticeship take me?
With an Apprenticeship you can: • get a job - your industry experience and qualifications are highly valued by employers • consider further study - work your way through the NVQ diploma levels to improve your qualifications and employability • apply for university - depending on the course and university, an advanced level Apprenticeship is broadly considered equivalent to studying for A Levels. For information on the Apprenticeship programmes available and funding support, visit www.cityplym.ac.uk/subject-areas/ apprenticeships.

www.cityplym.ac.uk
Our apprentices receive “particularly good advice and guidance” to “match them well to training opportunities offered by employers” Ofsted 2016
An Apprenticeship is a practical, recognised training programme supported by your employer and the College. You earn a wage and get on-thejob training from your workplace. There are three different types of Apprenticeship: intermediate level, advanced level and higher level.
01752 305300
info@cityplym.ac.uk
Not sure an Apprenticeship is right for you? Try a Pre-Apprenticeship programme! As a professional, vocational and technical college, we offer a range of alternative training programmes, including Traineeships (Pre-Apprenticeships) - an education and training programme with work experience which gives you the skills and experience that employers want. Lasting between six weeks and six months, you’ll get work experience, preparation training, English and maths support and other employability skills. A Traineeship is a great way to prepare for work or an Apprenticeship, build your CV and boost your confidence!
JAYCE STEVENS You could be suitable for a Traineeship if you are: • aged 16-18 and qualified to level 2 (GCSE equivalent), or aged 19-23 and qualified to level 1 • unemployed (or working less than 16 hours per week) and have little work experience • motivated to work. BECCI PHIPPEN At the College, you have such a good relationship with your lecturers and they make you think for yourself. You ask ‘should I do this?’ and they say ‘well, should you?’ - it wasn’t just spoon-fed learning; they were teaching you to learn independently so that you had those skills to take away with you. It meant the transition to university was not as hard as I’d expected.

LEVEL E Entry
It’s not always easy to follow the usual route through school and college into work. Sometimes there are hitches, problems and obstacles that can seem tough to overcome. It may be that you have a disability or learning difficulty that has made getting into education or work a little more challenging; you may need a different approach to your learning; or maybe you need some real experience to help you start your career. 26

KYLE GOSSELIN I found the College to have a very relaxed and pleasant atmosphere and the teaching was excellent. All the lecturers I’ve had were very friendly and willing to give up their own time to answer any questions, no matter how trivial. My Foundation Degree helped me no end with the fire service selection process.

HANNAH DIX The course was brilliant - it went into a vast range of different techniques, the different types of jobs where forensics plays a role, and also supplied a knowledge of chemistry, biology, and the hands-on techniques you need on the job. I now work for Wiltshire Police as a crime scene investigator and I love it.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS/ GUARDIANS Do young people have to stay in school until they’re 18? No - young people are required to stay in education or training, but these choices include going to College or doing an Apprenticeship. They do not have to stay at school.
Why choose City College Plymouth?
Here are some other post-16 education facts you need to know ...
We work with employers to make sure that our training meets their needs. This helps to reduce the skills gap between education and employment and means that our students are in demand!
1. Young people do not have to stay at school until they achieve a GCSE grade C/4 in both English and maths. They can study GCSEs part-time to support another course/study programme or try functional skills (equivalent qualifications in practical English and maths skills).
Being able to take students right up to university-level study and beyond is one of the key differences between the College and school. It allows strong relationships to form, and the range of ages creates a mature learning environment. Our Careers team will give advice on the appropriate level of qualification and progression routes before students join and throughout their time at College. Careers guidance is FREE, impartial and confidential.
2. Young people can apply for an Apprenticeship even if they do not achieve GCSE grade C/4 in English and maths. As part of day release, they will study functional skills, these are practical maths and English skills relevant to their Apprenticeship. 3. If young people choose a National Diploma, they can go on to study a university-level course. For specific Degree and Foundation Degree entry requirements please visit www.ucas.com.

Safeguarding and being safe at College The College takes its responsibilities for the safety and well-being of its students very seriously. There is a designated and specially trained Safeguarding team who support and advise students and staff in all aspects of ‘being safe’. Safeguarding incorporates a range of matters including health and safety (including e-safety), protection from abuse or exploitation, anti-bullying (including cyber-bullying) and associated matters. The College is an active member of the Plymouth Safeguarding Children Board and works with other agencies to ensure our students are safe at College. Costs and funding Our Student Funding team provides information, advice and guidance about the range of funds on offer. They can help with: • s ources of financial support and funding applications • travel options and funding • childcare provision and funding • emergency hardship • meal support. For those aged 16 to 18 studying a full-time course funded by the Skills Funding Agency, there are no tuition fees (does not apply to international students).
Travel There are a number of travel options available to full-time students. Students are able to access the free College buses (Citybus 36, 21 and 21A services), which run between the city centre and Kings Road. Students further away may be eligible for an annual subsidised bus pass in conjunction with various local bus companies. Bus passes will be issued in conjunction with the main bus provider for your area (based on your home address). Bus companies are Plymouth Citybus and Stagecoach Southwest. For further travel information on costs and funding, the College Meal Scheme or travel, please contact the Student Funding team. Extra help in the classroom The College is committed to helping all students by giving them support to be successful on their chosen study programme. If your son/daughter has a disability that may affect their learning or participation, we need to know so we can ensure they receive the right support and assistance. This information is only used for support purposes. Students can tell us about this on their application form, at interview, at enrolment, during induction or at any time during their study programme. We respect a student’s right not to tell us about a disability, but this may affect the College’s ability to provide the appropriate level of support.
College Meal Scheme The College runs a FREE breakfast club for students during term time and support for students entitled to a free college meal.
For further information on College life, support and funding, please call 01752 305300 and ask for a copy of our 2017/18 Parent/Guardians’ Guide or visit www.cityplym.ac.uk.
