Why Choose the College? The College has been praised by Ofsted (2008) for how its students develop high levels of practical and work-related skills. The College’s supportive environment was also highlighted.

“The College’s accommodation is good with industry-standard resources” “They (students) develop high levels of practical and work-related skills” “Progression into employment or further study is good” “The College provides good support for its students” Students’ views of the College 5

We constantly seek feedback from students on their views of the College to ensure we are doing things right. When asked, students said they really liked: • the experience of a real-life working environment and having ‘real’ clients • the opportunity to improve skills and get the qualifications to find a job • the hands-on tuition and being able to use industry-standard equipment • the way they are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning • its mature environment - being treated like an adult and making their own decisions.

The one you choose will depend on: • the qualifications you already have or will shortly achieve • whether you prefer a vocational or an academic route, or a mixture of the two • what you want to do after your course • your preferred style of learning.

How do I decide which is the right route for me? There is a lot to think about when choosing which career you would like to follow, and whether you go straight from college or via university. Have you considered the following questions?

9

• • • • • • • •

What do I like doing? What do I not like doing? What do I want from my career? Will it suit my personality? What qualifications do I need to achieve my aim? Will I have to study further? Do I want to progress to higher education? Do I want a job now or later?

If you are not sure which course is right for you, contact our Student Services team on 01752 305803. They will talk to you about your interests and expected grades, and suggest options to you. Full-time Course Guide 2012/13 Qualifications Explained

Qualifications Explained Functional skills

GCSEs

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)

Higher National Certificates

Functional skills qualifications have replaced key skills. Functional skills are a new suite of qualifications for maths, English and information communication technology (ICT). If you develop your skills in numeracy, communication and ICT you are more likely to achieve your main qualification and be successful when you progress to the next level or into employment. NVQs are work-related qualifications which apply the practical skills and knowledge you learn at College directly into the workplace. They can be studied full-time at the College or part-time while in a job, work placement or on an Apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships

11

For those who want to follow the work-based route, there is a choice between an Apprenticeship (level 2) or an Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3). You are employed and receive a wage whilst training with an employer. Apprenticeships incorporate NVQs and functional skills and can also include technical certificates. See page 23 for more information.

BTEC Subsidiary and Extended Diplomas

These are new, two-year vocational qualifications which blend practical, career focused skills and academic study to prepare you for direct entry into employment or enable you to move on to higher education. They have been set up so that you can study for a subsidiary diploma in one year and then continue on to the extended diploma in the second year.

AS and A2 Levels

This route involves you in continuous study - one year for AS level and two years for A2 level. At City College Plymouth you can either study an AS/A2 programme, or combine AS/A2 levels with a choice of vocational options such as business or media. See page 19 for more information.

The College offers an intensive one-year, full-time programme consisting of four GCSEs, academic development and tutorial support. It will give you a broad range of qualifications, good foundations for further academic study and an opportunity to update previous qualifications and improve your grades. See page 20 for more information. These are higher-level qualifications which relate to a particular employment sector, and tend to be equivalent to the first and/or second stage of a degree. They are for students who are aged over 18 and have successfully completed an A level, extended diploma or other advanced level course.

Foundation Degrees

These are employment-related higher education qualifications equivalent to the first and second stage of a degree, developed by the College with employers. They are designed to include workplace experience, learning and assessment, whilst also providing a route for progression to the final year of a named honours degree at specified universities.

Access to Higher Education

Access to Higher Education courses are for those who have not been in education for some time and do not have the necessary entry qualifications to progress to higher education. These courses provide an alternative route to higher education and focus on study skills as well as providing a foundation of learning for a specific subject area.

Your Future Progression Routes

01752 305300 www.cityplym.ac.uk

The College offers courses at all levels, and will help you progress through the various levels to achieve the highest qualification required to achieve your learning goals. College staff can help advise you on the appropriate level and, when at College, will discuss progression onto higher level qualifications. Our foundation level courses lead on to our intermediate and advanced levels. If you achieve an advanced qualification you can then go onto a foundation degree, higher national certificate/ diploma or professional qualification. You can choose to carry on learning or go into a job from any level of achievement.

All these qualifications can lead to EMPLOYMENT!

We Are Here to Help ... Student Services

You can be sure that when you speak to us we will give you the best impartial information, advice and guidance. In fact, we have the Investor in Careers Award and the MATRIX Standard Award for the quality of our services.

15

We are here to help, so that you can concentrate on your studies. If you want to come to the College, we can help you with advice about: • planning your next step (courses, higher education, training, employment) • student funding and financial support • travel cards and the College buses • learning support for students who have learning difficulties and disabilities • funding for childcare and local childcare providers. You can contact Student Services on 01752 305803 or e-mail studentservices@cityplym.ac.uk.

Student funding support

The Student Funding team offers information, advice and guidance about a wide range of funds to help you start your course. The team can also help you apply for funds and loans that may be available to assist with the costs of books and essential equipment for your course, together with travel, childcare costs and emergency hardship. There are various funds available. For more information please call 01752 305381/305110 or e-mail studentfunding@cityplym.ac.uk.

Childcare

As a parent, you may find that juggling family life with study can be tricky. We want to support you so you can enjoy your studies and be a responsible parent to your child. The College runs two ‘outstanding’ nurseries and a kids’ club. Both our nurseries were judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in our last inspections in 2007. For full inspection reports visit the Ofsted website - www.ofsted.gov.uk. For further details or to request an application form, please contact Curious Kittens on 01752 305060/305345 or e-mail curiouskittensnursery@cityplym.ac.uk.

Travelling to College

As part of the College’s Transport Strategy, students are encouraged, if possible, to walk, cycle or take public transport to and from College to reduce their impact on the environment. Students from Devon (mainly the Ivybridge, Kingsbridge and Tavistock areas), and Cornwall (mainly the Launceston, Liskeard and Looe areas) will be able to buy a subsidised travel pass, which can be used on a number of public bus services. In addition, the College operates a free bus that runs between the city centre, Goschen and Kings Road. Students aged 16-18 have to apply to their respective county council in the first instance and only if declined, can then purchase the relevant pass from the College. If you are aged 16-18 and live within the Plymouth city boundaries, you may be entitled to a subsidised bus pass from the College depending on your home address and household income. Access to Higher Education The College’s Access to Higher Education courses offer a second chance to people who have not been in education for some time and need to learn how to study again. This can be for a variety of reasons - some people will have been told that education is simply not for them, that they lack the skills and ability to succeed educationally. Others will have had no real interest in pursuing their education and felt it was of no relevance to their lives, and others, of course, will have had all sorts of personal reasons which would have made it impossible to continue with their education when they were at school.

21

Many of our students, often with very different experiences and concerns, discover that they do have both the ability and motivation to learn, and as they do so their confidence grows. Many choose to continue with their education by progressing to university - and we have very good links with local universities, as well as some further afield. All the tutors on the courses are committed to supporting and enabling students to reach their full potential. At the end of the course our students comment not only on the knowledge they have gained, but also on the support they have had from tutors, as well as one another. They also say that despite all the hard work, it has been fun returning to learn!

Moving on up

“ I joined the Access to HE Science course and developed quickly over the first few months because of my passion for the subject and encouragement from lecturers. The College supported me and helped me to achieve distinctions in all of my modules. I’m now studying dietetics at Plymouth University and am working towards my dream of being a dietician.” Anna Warren
