CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE Study programmes

If you are aged 16 to 18 you will enrol on a study programme, which is made up of 600 hours per year and includes: • a full-time course or Apprenticeship qualification at level 1, 2 or 3 in your chosen subject • help to complete GCSEs in English and maths (if you didn’t achieve grades A*-C at school) • other non-qualification activities, such as tutorial time, study skills, enterprise activities, work experience and help with applying for further courses or jobs.

How do I decide which is the right course for me? There is a lot to think about when choosing which career you would like to follow and many things can affect your decision. Look through our courses and ask yourself: • what are my qualifications? • what subjects do I enjoy? • do I prefer a practical, hands-on approach or a more academic route? • what are my hobbies and interests? • what do I want to do after College?

If you are not sure which course is right for you, contact theinfospace team on 01752 305803. They will talk to you about your interests and expected grades, allowing you to explore all the options available to you. Alternatively, you can attend one of our open days or join a course taster session during the October and February half term weeks. See the back cover for details. 2 I www.cityplym.ac.uk

ENGLISH AND MATHS Know what you want to study but need to boost your English and maths grades? Employers frequently stress the importance of good levels of English and maths, and they are recognised as being vital to the world of work. If you didn’t achieve a grade C or above in GCSE English or maths at school, then City College will support you to improve your grades. As part of your study programme, you will complete GCSEs or functional skills in English and/or maths alongside your core professional, vocational and technical qualifications or Apprenticeship programme.

Dylan Lamerton, 17, studied at Saltash.net and St Boniface before joining the College to study health and social care. As part of his course, he studied English and maths functional skills.

If you didn’t achieve a grade C or above in GCSE English or maths at school, then City College will support you to improve your grades

Childcare Health and Social Care courses

Dylan explained: “I failed my English and maths at school, so had to make up the grades for my course. Studying them at the College is much more fun. The subjects just seem to make more sense and I understand them better. “The lecturers are really friendly and support you through everything, even if it’s personal or family problems. You know you’ve always got help if you need it.”

Dylan Lamerton

Dylan has an interest in mental health and would like to combine this with a career in the army. He concluded: “I’m starting my level 2 studies next year, and want to progress to level 3 so I can go to university. I’d like to have the experience of living away from home before joining the army.”

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? An Apprenticeship is a practical, recognised training programme supported by your employer and the College. You earn a wage and get on-the-job training from your workplace, so they are a great way to get work experience and a qualification at the same time. There are three different types of Apprenticeship: intermediate level, advanced level and higher level. More about them later!

How does it work?

How much will I earn?

• You can expect to work between 30 and 40 hours per week (including time spent at the College) and be paid a wage.

On average, apprentices earn around £150 per week - which, in addition to all of the other benefits, is pretty good!

• The majority of apprentices spend four days a week with their employer, and one day at the College. • You will be entitled to at least 20 days paid holiday each year.

Where will an Apprenticeship take me? With an Apprenticeship you can:

• Most of your training will be in the workplace, but you may need to come into College for assessment, or on a dayrelease basis.

• get a job - your industry experience and professional, vocational and technical qualifications are highly valued by employers

• You will be visited regularly in your workplace by a member of College staff to keep you on the right track and support you to complete your Apprenticeship programme.

• consider further study - work your way through the NVQ diploma levels to improve your qualifications and employability

What qualifications will I get? During your Apprenticeship you will work towards an NVQ qualification. The type and level of qualification will depend on what kind of Apprenticeship you are on.

• apply for university - depending on the course and university, an advanced level Apprenticeship is broadly considered equivalent to studying for A Levels.

You may also gain functional skills qualifications in maths, English and ICT, and additional qualifications, including a Technical Certificate relating to your subject area. All brilliant for boosting your CV!

APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL

CITY WINNERS Jonathan Fownes, 18, is currently employed at the high-end hair and beauty establishment, A Salon Called Fish. He completed his two year Apprenticeship at the salon and is now undertaking a year as a groomer before becoming a fully qualified hairdresser. Jonathan Fownes

Jonathan said: “I applied for an Apprenticeship at A Salon Called Fish as I’d always been interested in hair. I’ve always loved creating new looks and changing appearances, and hairdressing allows this creative side of me to shine through. I don’t learn well in a classroom environment, so an Apprenticeship and learning on-the-job in the salon was ideal for me.” Like most apprentices, Jonathan spent one day a week at the College, training and making new friends who shared his interests.

JONATHAN’S EMPLOYER, ROB, SAID: “ I was an apprentice myself, so I know the benefits of hands-on learning. From an employer’s point of view, if they come on board and are 100% committed from the beginning, you can really motivate that person and they can go far.”

Jonathan continued: “The time I spent at the College gave me a great variety of skills to use in the workplace. It was great to be earning a wage and learning at the same time as it made me more independent. “I wasn’t very confident when I first started College or my Apprenticeship. I’d get freaked out just doing a blow dry! I look back now and think of how much I have progressed since I started thanks to the College and the guys in the salon. My transformation over the two years has been great and it’s not just me who has noticed.”

NOT SURE AN APPRENTICESHIP IS RIGHT FOR YOU? TRY A TRAINEESHIP! As a professional, vocational and technical college, we offer a range of alternative training programmes, including Traineeships - an education and training programme with work experience which gives you the skills and experience that employers want. Lasting between six weeks to six months, you’ll get work experience, preparation training, English and maths support and other employability skills. A Traineeship is a great way to prepare for work or an Apprenticeship, build on your CV and boost your confidence!

You could be suitable for a Traineeship if you are: • aged 16-18 and are qualified below level 3 (A Level equivalent), or aged 19-23 and qualified below level 2 (GCSE equivalent) • unemployed (or working less than 16 hours per week) and have little work experience • motivated to work. ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION Access to Higher Education courses are specially designed to give you the skills and qualifications you need to progress to university-level study if you have not been in education for a few years. GCSEs

Our students have been impressed with the support they have received from their tutors and peers, as well as the knowledge they have gained, and have an increased confidence in their own abilities. They also say that, despite all the hard work, returning to learn has been fun! The College offers a number of Access to Higher Education courses on a parttime basis. Please see www.cityplym. ac.uk/courses for more information.

Entry requirements for Access courses To succeed, you need to be committed to your studies and focused on your career choice. This route is designed for adult students (19+). Funding is not available for those aged 18 and under, and we would recommend that alternative vocational qualifications are considered to support progression onto further or higher education and employment.

93% of students receive an offer to university* *Students who achieved an Access Diploma, 2013/14

All Access courses require level 1/2 achievement in maths (course dependent) and level 2 in English. This may be a grade C or above in GCSE English and C/D in maths, a level 1/2 qualification or equivalent. Please contact us for an assessment if you are unsure if you have the appropriate qualifications to meet the entry criteria.

Entry requirements for international students The College welcomes applications from international students, however you are strongly recommended to clarify with your chosen university your responsibilities as an international student. You may be required to complete an IELTS or CEFR recognised equivalent test score exam prior to interview or record IELTS 5.5 on your application. There may also be funding implications relating to your international student status.

01752 305300

Please note that Access courses do not include GCSE equivalent qualifications in maths, English or science. If these are an entry requirement for your chosen higher education course, you can either study these before, alongside or after completing your Access course. City College offers part-time GCSEs in these subjects as twilight and evening classes. Please check our website for further details.

24+ Advanced Learning Loans If you are aged 24 or over, you can apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the fees for an Access to Higher Education course. If you progress and complete a university-level (higher education) course, you will not have to pay back your 24+ Advanced Learning Loan! For more information, visit our website www.cityplym.ac.uk/24+loans or call the Student Funding team on 01752 305381.

Erica Safari-Omoigui

Erica, 39, has secured a place at Plymouth University to study mental health nursing. Erica came to Plymouth from Nigeria to join her husband and was working as a healthcare assistant in a residential home before she applied to join the Access to Nursing course at the College. Returning as a mature student, Erica was expecting it to be easy and familiar, however she was glad to find the course still challenged her. She said: “I wouldn’t have had it any other way because now I know that there’s nothing I will face at university that I won’t be prepared for. At school, they just teach you to pass exams, but this course has taught me how to do proper research, write essays and learn beyond the subject. “I want to know more about the human mind and behaviour and develop new skills to make a difference in people’s lives, so I would like a career in mental health. I’m so grateful to the staff at the College for helping me with my UCAS application. They help you with your applications, guide you through your course and assignments and support you in every way what more can one wish for?”

James, 17, explained: “I’ve always been fine with the academic side of things, but the social aspects of starting College made me quite nervous. I assumed that because Plymouth was a big city that I wouldn’t be able to make friends, but it really wasn’t the case. It’s great to have people to socialise with in the breaks or for a quick game of ping pong! “The business course is fantastic - we go on lots of trips, getting to see how businesses work behind the scenes. It has challenged me by putting me out of my comfort zone, but I think it has been really good for me and has improved my confidence.” James would like to progress to the level three diploma in September. He explained: “When I was at school, I just assumed it was a process of school, sixth form, then university, because they didn’t really inform you about other options like going to a further education college. I’m just glad I have the confidence now to be able to make those decisions and take advantage of the opportunities available.” James Lillie

Ellie, 19, is a part-time childcare assistant at Curious Kittens Day Nursery in Devonport, but City College Plymouth is where it all began. After completing her GCSEs, Ellie realised school wasn’t for her and decided to see what City College had to offer. She said: “I didn’t want to do A Levels, and I knew the childcare route was something that I wanted to go down, as it’s something I have always been very passionate about. “I loved coming to College, and it’s something that I still miss today. I made lots of friends who I am still in contact with. During the course we had the opportunity to undertake work experience, which really added to my skills base and even resulted in a couple of part-time roles in between my College courses.” Ellie is currently in her first year studying an Early Childhood Studies Degree at Plymouth University, where she is doing really well and working hard to gain the qualifications required in order to support her career as a children’s play specialist.

I was able to see all the options available to me and get the information that I needed all in one hit. It was at this point that I decided I wanted to go down the construction route, and I enrolled on the Level 2 Plumbing and Heating course.” After a break, Billie-Jay was slightly apprehensive about returning to full-time education. She said: “I don’t know what I was worried about. The lecturers help you settle in and the College has a very welcoming feel to it. “I’ve learnt so much on this course. I’ve really got a taste for plumbing and I don’t want to stop learning - it’s what I enjoy! I like the idea that I can create a fully functional system for someone, and I look back and I think: I did that. For me, it’s exciting. “I want to work on bigger structures in the future - bigger pipework and bigger gas installations. A former automotive apprentice, Sam now runs his own business; Burnett Autocare. Sam, 23, joined City College Plymouth straight from school, studying a two year, full-time vehicle maintenance course before applying for an automotive Apprenticeship. Sam said: “The Apprenticeship allowed me to train in a working garage, where I learnt alongside experienced mechanics. It’s not an easy job; actually it was really hard work, but I learnt an awful lot. It also gave me the confidence and skills to take my learning to the next level. “I was initially hesitant about taking on the responsibility of managing a garage. I knew my skills were good enough, but could I take the pressure of running my own business? In the end, I decided to go for it! “When I opened the business, the first thing I did was take on an apprentice. Doing an Apprenticeship was the best thing that could have happened to me, and I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t taken the opportunity to apply for one. Now, as a business owner, I’m seeing the benefit of Apprenticeships from the other side. Watching my own apprentice grow and seeing the massive advantages he is bringing to my garage.”

Jon Morcom is director of Plymouth’s 150 year old Duke of Cornwall Hotel. Jon started his career with a BTEC in Hospitality at City College and thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on training. He said: “The training kitchens were very appealing to me when applying, and I really enjoyed the practical experience of working in the restaurant and kitchens. I liked the fact that the College was keen for the students to go out into local businesses in the industry, preparing us in advance. “At College, you have a more independent and relaxed way of learning compared to school and you are treated as an adult. You still had the safety of course guidelines though and you always knew that you had to achieve the results to get your qualifications and further your career.” Jon now works with the College to provide opportunities for students studying hospitality and catering. “For me, I’m proud that I was a student at the College. I’m proud that I can talk about that and I’m proud at where I’ve arrived. To give something back to the College is essential for me and I am happy to continue to do this.”

Rebecca left College in summer 2014 and is now studying for a Degree in Adult Nursing at Plymouth University. A self-confessed science geek, Rebecca said: “I love science. I chose City College because I had loads of friends who had gone there and they all said it was such a positive experience. “You build up a good relationship with the lecturers, so you’re supported, feel comfortable, and they’re really approachable. It was a big difference from school because, at College, you’re treated more like a grown up. “At school, you have your set instructions and you can’t really deviate from them, but in College you are left to get on with it; to make those mistakes and learn from them. It really prepared me for the move to university, where it’s much more on you to plan your studies. DO YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE TO STAY IN SCHOOL UNTIL THEY’RE 18? No - young people are required to stay in education or training, but these choices include going to College or doing an Apprenticeship. They do not have to stay at school.

Here are some other post-16 education facts you need to know: 1. Young people do not have to stay at school until they achieve a GCSE grade C in both English and maths. They can study GCSEs part-time to support another course/study programme or try Functional Skills (equivalent qualifications in practical English and maths skills).

2. Young people can apply for an Apprenticeship even if they do not achieve GCSE grade C in English and maths. As part of day release, they will study functional skills, these are practical maths and English skills relevant to their Apprenticeship.

3. If young people choose a National Diploma, they can go on to study a university-level course. For specific Degree and Foundation Degree entry requirements please see the UCAS website www.ucas.com.

WHY CHOOSE CITY COLLEGE PLYMOUTH? As a professional, vocational and technical college, City College helps young people make the transition from school, to university or into the world of work. Whatever the next step may be, we train people to get THE job or progress onto THE university-level course they want. Employability

Links to Employers

All our study programmes are designed to give young people the skills and qualifications that employers are looking for, as well as those highly valued soft skills, including:

The College aims to support its students into full-time and part-time employment and has its very own employment service, offering a one stop shop for students seeking employment, either during or after their studies.

• resilience

From day one, College students can register with the service and receive support and assistance with CV writing, interview techniques and job applications.

• adaptability • reliability • team working • leadership • networking • communication

• c ore skills (words, numbers and computers) • enterprise and commercial know-how • creativity • problem-solving • taking risks and using initiative.

• t echnical competence and knowledge The employability skills students gain on their study programmes are reinforced through our dedicated employability centre, theworkspace, which runs regular workshops for students on CV writing, interview techniques, gives them employment opportunities and organises seminars with employers who share with our students what they want from prospective employees! What’s more, many of our professional, vocational and technical study programmes offer additional qualifications which are appealing to employers - eg first aid, food hygiene, and health and safety. Whatever study programme they choose, we guarantee that your son or daughter will have access to the best facilities and dedicated, enthusiastic staff, who are experts in their field, to support their learning. Enhancing academic study with real-life work experience really gives our students an advantage - what’s more important in today’s competitive job market?

And it doesn’t end when they finish their study programme … they can access the service up to two years after completing their studies with us! We have excellent links with employers through our Employer Endorsement Scheme, which means that our students can benefit from: • full and part-time employment via our jobs board • valuable tips and techniques to use in interviews from recruitment professionals • employer supported activities to boost employability skills • work experience placements in a range of sectors • community-based projects through volunteering.

“Our partnership through the Employer Endorsement Scheme cements our working relationship in a way that will benefit both organisations, helping the College to provide a curriculum that supports its students into employment, and helping our organisation gain and retain skilled employees.” Guy Walker, Senior Partner at Nash & Co Solicitors

SUPPORT AT EVERY STEP We will ensure your son/daughter receives all the educational and personal support they need before, during and after their time at City College.

Personal tutors Each student on a full-time or substantial part-time (over 150 guided learning hours) study programme is assigned a personal tutor. The tutor will monitor the student’s progress and offer help and support with all matters relating to their studies. We encourage parents and carers to meet with the personal tutors and to keep in contact.

Tutorial study programme All full-time students will have regular personal and academic reviews with their tutor, ensuring that they are on track to achieve their qualification and have planned their next steps.

Extra help in the classroom The College is committed to helping all students by giving them support to be successful on their chosen study programme. If your son/daughter has a disability that may affect their learning or participation, we need to know so we can ensure they receive the right support and assistance. This information is only used for support purposes.

82 I www.cityplym.ac.uk

Students can tell us about this on their application form, at interview, at enrolment, during induction or at any time during their study programme. We respect a student’s right not to tell us about a disability, but this may affect the College’s ability to provide the appropriate level of support.

Careers guidance service Our careers guidance service can help your son or daughter make appropriate choices now and throughout their time at the College. Our qualified careers advisors provide individual guidance interviews, careers information resources and regular drop-in sessions. To book an appointment with a Careers Advisor before applying, please call 01752 305803 or e-mail info@cityplym.ac.uk. Careers guidance is FREE, impartial and confidential. As part of our commitment to careers education and guidance, the College has been awarded the prestigious Matrix Award for information, advice and guidance.

One step closer to that job …

Support includes:

The College offers professional, vocational and technical study programmes at all levels so students can progress and achieve the highest qualification they need to meet their goals.

• texting students to remind them of study programme deadline dates

Being able to take students right up to university-level study and beyond is one of the key differences between the College and school. It allows strong relationships to form, and the range of ages at both of our main sites creates a mature learning environment. Our Careers team will give advice on the appropriate level of qualification and progression routes before students join and throughout their time at College.

Welfare

• supporting students to help them complete coursework • one-to-one support and advice • running team relationship building sessions • drop-in sessions for young carers or young parents.

Learning resources To support your son/daughter’s studies there are well-equipped libraries at each of the two main centres - Kings Road and Goschen. Both have plenty of study spaces and computers, thousands of resources such as e-books and e-journals, and databases are also available 24/7 via a ‘virtual library’.

The College takes its responsibilities for the safety and well-being of its students very seriously. There is a designated and specially trained Safeguarding team who support and advise students and staff in all aspects of ‘being safe’. Safeguarding incorporates a range of matters including health and safety (including e-safety), protection from abuse or exploitation, anti-bullying (including cyber-bullying) and associated matters. The College is an active member of the Plymouth Safeguarding Children Board and works with other agencies to ensure our students are safe at College. All students are issued with an orange College lanyard and ID card holder so they are easily identifiable as a student whilst on College premises. All staff are identifiable by their blue or green lanyards and ID card holders.

PARENTS/CARERS

The College has a team of Student Liaison Support Workers whose role is to provide informal support to students who are struggling with their study programme.

• accessing Discretionary Learner Support funding to help with travel costs

Safeguarding and being safe at College

They liaise with personal tutors and other College staff to identify students who need help. They then work on a one-to-one basis in whatever ways will help the students to improve their attendance, enjoy College life and get them back on track.

KEEPING YOU INFORMED We want to keep you updated on the College and encourage you to get involved. If a student is under 18, we will ensure that parents and carers receive full information about the course, College support and your son or daughter’s progress. If a student is over the age of 18 at enrolment, the College needs their permission to discuss issues regarding their studies with you. You are able to make appointments to see College staff to discuss your son or daughter’s progress at any time, particularly if you have concerns.

Progress reports Each student will have their own Individual Learning Plan, which their tutor uses to record targets and to write a report on each student’s progress. Parents and carers of those students aged 18 or under will be invited to parent sessions throughout the year to discuss the progress report.

Attendance Regular attendance is key to success. Students are required to attend every lesson, unless they are ill or there is another genuine reason. The College has a system in place so that if a student’s academic work is slipping or they’re not attending, parents and carers of students under the age of 18 (on 1 September each year) will be informed. Students are expected to attend regularly and, if a student is unable to attend, they should let the College know in advance. A register is taken at every class and any absences will be followed up by the course tutor. Please note: some financial support schemes are based on 100% attendance.

QUALIFICATIONS EXPLAINED Apprenticeships For students who would prefer to follow a work-based route, there is a choice between an Apprenticeship (level 2), an Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3) or a Higher Apprenticeship (level 4). Apprentices are employed and receive a wage whilst training with an employer.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) NVQs are work-related qualifications which apply the practical skills and knowledge learnt at College directly to the workplace. They are studied alongside an Apprenticeship.

GCSEs We offer part-time GCSEs in English, maths and additional science for those who have not achieved a grade C at school. These are studied alongside the student’s chosen study programme.

Level 1 and 2 Certificates and Diplomas

BTEC Subsidiary and Extended Diplomas

These are one-year courses which allow students to progress either into employment or on to higher level study. All our level 1 and 2 qualifications have progression routes on to the next level of study (subject to satisfactory performance). For many students, these courses offer an ideal opportunity to develop their skills, learning in a more hands-on way and improving their future career prospects.

These are two-year vocational qualifications which blend practical, career focused skills and academic study to prepare young people for direct entry into employment or onto university-level courses (higher education). Students will study for a subsidiary diploma in year one and then continue on to the extended diploma in their second year. Level 3 BTECs are the equivalent to three A Levels and will earn students UCAS points for entry to higher education. For example, a BTEC National Diploma with overall three merit grades earns 240 UCAS points (one A Level with an A grade earns 120 UCAS points).

Level 3 Diplomas These are two-year vocational qualifications which prepare students for direct entry into employment or to higher education (such as a universitylevel course). Some diplomas consist of more than one qualification and many offer additional related qualifications to support applications to work or university.

Higher National Certificates These are higher-level qualifications which relate to a particular employment sector and tend to be equivalent to the first and/or second stage of a degree. They are for students who are aged 18+ and have successfully completed an A Level, extended diploma or other advanced level course (level 3).

Functional skills Functional skills are qualifications in maths, English and information communication technology (ICT) and are very popular with employers. Studied alongside a student’s chosen course, they form a core part of their study programme.

86 I www.cityplym.ac.uk

Foundation Degrees These are industry-related higher education qualifications equivalent to the first and second stage of a degree, developed by the College with employers. They are designed to include workplace experience, learning and assessment, whilst also providing a route for progression into employment or to the final year of an honours degree at specified universities.
