Higher Apprenticeships The working world is changing. Businesses want employees with practical experience as well as qualifications, and an Apprenticeship gives you a work-based route into careers which have in the past traditionally been the preserve of graduates. Higher Apprenticeships are the perfect way to blend higher education learning with real-life work experience. An Apprenticeship is a practical, recognised training programme that you undertake whilst being an employee with a relevant business. City College Plymouth offers a range of Higher Apprenticeships in subjects such as: ◆◆ business and management ◆◆ construction ◆◆ engineering.
Why choose a Higher Apprenticeship? If you know where you want your career to take you, an Apprenticeship will allow you to learn job specific skills relevant to your chosen career. If you’re under 19, then most of the cost of your course is paid for by the government. If you’re over 19, costs can be met by yourself or your employer. Either way, you could finish your course debt free! Apprentices finish their courses with great job prospects. You will already have built up a great relationship with your employer, have industry experience and a range of skills that employers are looking for.
How to become an apprentice Whether you already have an employer lined up or need to find one as part of your Apprenticeship, you can speak to the College’s Work-based Learning team by calling 01752 305300 or e-mailing info@cityplym.ac.uk.

Foundation Degrees Foundation Degrees are two-year degree-level courses (when studied full-time) which are broadly equivalent to studying for the first two years of an Honours Degree at university. They are carefully designed and developed in collaboration with employers and can offer you the opportunity to combine academic study with the skills and attributes needed in the workplace. Why choose a Foundation Degree with City College Plymouth? Flexibility Many of our Foundation Degree courses are offered on a part-time basis, which can provide greater flexibility and the opportunity to carry on with work whilst you study. Some employers will fund the course fees and provide time to study where the course is considered of relevance for their business. Several of our part-time Foundation Degrees are offered on an intensive two year basis, while others are over three years.
The start of a journey Most Foundation Degrees have articulated progression routes to achieving a full Honours Degree. These are often one year “top-up” courses available at Plymouth University or, in some cases, another university or partner college.
Cost Studying full-time for a Foundation Degree at the College will cost you £5,950 per year from September 2015, compared to £9,000 at many universities.
Smaller group sizes We offer our Foundation Degrees to smaller groups of students than most universities, enabling you to get to know your tutor and fellow students, and benefit from more contact time on your course. Our Foundation Degrees require the completion of 240 credits of study - 120 at level 4 and 120 at level 5.
Improved career prospects When you complete one of our courses and graduate with a Plymouth University award, you will have the appropriate training and skills needed for success in industry and business. Employers lead in the design and development of our Foundation Degrees to ensure that they meet current employment needs, and the formalisation of your knowledge and skills into a qualification could open the doors to a higher level position in your field.
Please note There is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability. If you are progressing to Plymouth University, please check the fees with the University as these will be different to the fees you pay at City College Plymouth.

CASE STUDY Damon Lau
After completing his A Levels, Damon went to university to study business; however he found that university wasn’t for him and left to work for a transport company. Damon said: “After five years, I realised that my ambitions were not going to be achieved by working in an industry that had no relation to what I wanted to do.”
Damon completed the course with a distinction and finished his third year at Plymouth University. He has recently gained a scholarship to study for an MSc in Finance. Damon said: “Not only did I gain a Foundation Degree, I also learnt many skills which are useful for university and for future employment. I am extremely grateful to City College Plymouth.”
In September 2011, Damon enrolled on the Foundation Degree in Accounting and Finance at City College. He was happy to find that returning to education was not as complicated or as daunting as he had expected. Damon continued: “The College was a friendly place, everything was explained and it didn’t take long to settle in. The lecturers were outstanding. Not only did they help us with assignments and the course, they also gave us advice when issues with our lives outside the College affected our studies.”

CASE STUDY Ola Piewcewicz
Ola came to England from Poland when she was 12 years old. After completing her GCSEs, she came to City College Plymouth where she studied a BTEC in Business Administration and Finance.
She said: “College has been amazing. We have small classes in which to learn, so the tutors get to spend more individual time with you. Nothing is too much trouble and all of the tutors go out of their way to assist you. I’ve really enjoyed my time here.”
Ola said: “I’d heard a lot of good things about City College Plymouth. The relaxed atmosphere and the variety of courses were very appealing to me. I picked the BTEC in Business Administration and Finance because you get to run your own business and it gave me the opportunity to find out firsthand what it is like to do this.” After completing her BTEC, Ola had some health issues and decided to take a year out of education. With support from her previous tutor, Ola returned to the College in 2013 and enrolled on the Foundation Degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management. She’s currently in her second year of studies and hopes to own her own hotel in the future.

CASE STUDY Michael Bethell
Michael had gained a level three Extended Diploma in Public Services from a college in Essex before he enrolled at City College in 2013 to study the Foundation Degree in Public Services. Michael said: “The course was exactly what I wanted to do and that, coupled with the fact that Plymouth is by the sea, was particularly attractive. Also, the College class sizes are smaller than what you would get at university, allowing the tutor more time to spend with you.”
“Being a long way from home can initially be a daunting experience, but I feel I have become more confident since attending this course.” Michael would like to join the British Army as an Officer and is training through the College’s links with the University Officer Training Corps, based in Exeter. Mike added: “I gain the same training as the other Officer Cadets at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst. The fact that I am also part of the College has been a massive bonus for me.”
City College is affiliated with Plymouth University and many of the Foundation Degree students go on to complete their third year there. Michael continued: “With the course being linked to the University, it has given me ample opportunity to get out and meet people.

Performing Arts Alumni
CASE STUDY Zephy Hood
Zephy is studying a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Performing Arts and is currently in her second year. Before applying to City College, she was an Aircraft Engineer in the Royal Navy. After the birth of her daughter in 2010, she left the Royal Navy to pursue a more creative career. Zephy completed her first year on the BTEC course and then went straight on to the HND.
She added: “I feel like I know my own strengths and that I will be ready for work at the end of this course. Thanks to the HND, I’ve already been out there working on various projects and the ultimate goal is for a few of us to get together and form a theatre company, creating our own work and touring locally. “I feel very privileged to have been on this course. It’s been really helpful and I feel very lucky to have had this opportunity.”
She said: “This course has been so amazing! It teaches you to recognise and use your skills and to get out of your comfort zone. The tutors all have industry experience and it makes the whole learning process so much better.” Zephy is due to finish her course in 2015 and would really love to have her own theatre space.

UCAS Tariff Points System What is the UCAS tariff? It’s the conversion of further education, level 3 qualifications, such as AS and A Levels, VCEs, BTECs etc, into one points system that universities can use to evaluate applications and make offers.
How does it work? Each qualification and grade is worth a number of points. All grades and qualifications are added together to give a total tariff point score.
With so many students applying it is best to apply as early as possible, but it is never too late to apply to the College. We may have places available right up until September for courses starting that year. Simply give us a call on 01752 305300 to check if we have space on the course of your choice and, if we can offer you a place, we will take you through the application procedure. You can find more information on the UCAS tariff tables on the UCAS website by visiting www.ucas.com/students/ucas_tariff/.
Don’t miss the deadlines! UCAS has a series of deadlines for students to meet, which you can find on their website, www.ucas.com. Deadlines are important, please make sure you know when to apply.
