The International Office organises many trips and parties during the year for your enjoyment. During our Orientation Programme in September we take students on a coach tour of Plymouth and Dartmoor National Park and also arrange an afternoon boat trip in the sea around Plymouth. Every year we organise a weekend trip to London, and day trips to Bath, Stonehenge, and other local places of interest around Plymouth. We also offer a Christmas party each year for our international students to experience British Christmas traditions and food, and we also celebrate Chinese New Year with a big party with food and entertainment by students, attended by senior management at the College and the Lord Mayor of Plymouth. See our website for more pictures www.cityplym.ac.uk/international
Student Quote ... Lee Wang Tao, Malaysia 16
The City College Plymouth Students’ Union encourages all students to get involved in many ways. You can become your course representative and support your classmates by attending Student Council meetings, or you could stand for election as one of two international student representatives on the Students’ Union committee to represent the views and interests of all international students in the College. This is also a great way to gain confidence in speaking English and is a great addition to a CV. The Student Liaison team provides a programme of weekly activities – sporting and cultural – which are a great way for international students to meet students with similar interests and to practise English outside the classroom. Sports offered include football, basketball, tennis, badminton and swimming. There is also a College gym run by a qualified instructor, and regular fitness and exercise classes. There is a low cost annual membership with free access to unlimited activities.
The College is a member of an organisation called HOST UK (www.hostuk.org.uk) which can arrange for international students to take a short visit to a volunteer host anywhere in the UK, at very low cost. Many students have participated in this programme and had a wonderful experience exploring UK culture.
Student Quote ... We visited a host family in Cornwall for Christmas and stayed in their private hotel for five days, overlooking the sea. The scenery was so beautiful, we felt so happy. The most important thing is that our host was such a warm-hearted lady, and she treated us like her granddaughters. On Christmas Day we had a wonderful traditional dinner, and were even given gifts by the family, which was such a surprise to us! This experience greatly widened our horizons and expanded our knowledge and we were so glad we took the chance to have a HOST placement.

Please note that students under the age of 18 will be placed with a family unless the student’s parents provide written consent for the student to live in another type of accommodation. At this stage it is essential that you start the process of applying for your visa as quickly as possible, as it can take some time. If you are applying through an agent, they will help you with the visa application process. It is however your responsibility to ensure you meet all the requirements for the visa application. English as a Foreign Language For many international students, studying English in the UK is the first step towards gaining a British academic qualification. At the College we recognise the importance of offering an interesting and contemporary full-time English course, which also prepares you thoroughly for your future study. Our 15 hour per week full-time programme includes the four basic skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, together with grammar, vocabulary development, pronunciation, study skills and culture. The programme is very varied; for example students are asked to perform internet searches, to prepare presentations, to conduct questionnaires and will also watch videos of recent TV drama and current affairs programmes as a basis for discussion. Students will work individually, in pairs and in groups. Students will also do project work based on visits to local places of interest. Most classes take place in the mornings with one or two afternoon sessions, leaving ample time to use the extensive personal study facilities to complete homework or work on individual goals set by your tutor. The focus is on improving all your English language skills but there is the opportunity to work on particular international English exams such as the Cambridge exams or IELTS. Individual programmes of study may be designed for students with an English level at Intermediate or above who wish to combine studying full-time English with another subject, such as beauty therapy.
24
Fact file Entry Requirements: Minimum age 16; a placement test is given to each student as part of the application process to ensure the student is placed in the right level class. Start Date: Students can enter throughout the year by arrangement. Assessment: Students can enter for a Cambridge examination for which the College is a centre. Advice is offered on entering, preparing for and taking an IELTS exam. Duration: Minimum enrolment is for four weeks. 25
In 2012 16-18 year old students achieved a 97% pass rate for A levels, maintaining the high pass rate achieved by the College over the past five years.
A Levels Taking A levels is the traditional route to university for most UK students. Our A Level Academy offers a study environment which is supportive, focussed on success, will prepare you for university and will present you with a new set of opportunities. • A levels take two years to study – the first year leads to the award of AS qualifications, and the second year (A2) completes the A level. Most international students begin their first year with three or four subjects, and usually continue with three to A2. • Students usually make their choice of subjects based on the ones they like best, the ones for which they have the best grades, and the ones which suit their future plans for university or work. • If you study A levels at City College Plymouth you will be studying alongside British students of your own age. All students are allocated a personal tutor who helps and advises them throughout their course. • Your study will involve a mix of lectures, classroom activities, project work, research, group work and independent study. City College Plymouth offers a wide range of A level study in 22 different subjects – almost all combinations of academic A levels are available.
A levels*: • Art and Design • Biology • Business Studies • Chemistry • Citizenship Studies • Classical Civilisation • Dance • Drama and Theatre Studies • English Language • English Literature • Environmental Studies
• Film Studies • French • Geography • History • Law • Mathematics • Media Studies • Music • Physics • Psychology • Sociology
*Subjects are offered each year depending on demand
For more details about each of the A levels on offer, please see our website www.cityplym.ac.uk/alevels.
Fact file Entry Requirements: Applicants should be a minimum of 16 years old when the course starts, with the equivalent of five GCSEs at grade C or above, including mathematics. Applicants should also have a recognised English language qualification to the equivalent of IELTS 5.5. Start Date: September. Assessment: A combination of coursework and examinations throughout the two years. Duration: Two years full-time. Progression: Students are given advice on making their UCAS applications to enter university.
11 of the A level subjects achieved a 100% pass rate in 2012, including Chemistry, Physics and Psychology. 26
International Foundation Courses – pathways to university • Our International Foundation Courses have been specifically designed as pathways to higher education in the UK for international students (non-EU and EU) who do not currently meet the entry requirements either academically or in terms of English ability. In particular, students from countries with a 12 year education system will need to take a Foundation course year before applying to most universities in the UK. • The College offers a one year International Foundation Course with subject pathways in Business and Technology/Computing, commencing in September each year, and also a six month intensive International Foundation Course with subject pathways in Business and Science, commencing in January each year. • Both courses allow students to apply to their choice of university in the UK. Many choose to stay at City College Plymouth to study a Foundation Degree, for which scholarships are available, or to progress to Plymouth University in the same city. • Students are given a College certificate and transcript of results on successful completion and advice and guidance is given to all students to make their applications for university. • On both courses students follow the core modules of English for Academic Purposes, Study Skills, IT and Maths for approximately 50% of their time and choose a subject pathway for the other 50%. The subject pathways consist of the following modules:
Business • Understanding Business • Introduction to Accounting & Finance • Business Law
Technology & Computing • Introduction to Engineering Technology • Technological Applications of Science • Introduction to Computer Science
Science • Chemistry • Advanced Maths • Biology or Physics
Fact file Entry Requirements: Applicants should have satisfactorily completed their own school leaving examinations, achieving a minimum of 5 subjects at the equivalent of GCSE grade C or above, including English and Maths. An overall minimum of IELTS 5.0 is required (with a minimum of 4.0 in each of the four disciplines), or its equivalent in other English language qualifications recognised by the UK Border Agency. Students must be 18 or over by the end of the course. Mature applicants over the age of 22 without formal qualifications, but with significant and relevant work experience, would be considered for entry. Start Date and Duration: September, one year full-time (Business and Technology/Computing); January, six months full-time (Business and Science) Assessment: Students’ overall grades are determined by a combination of coursework and examinations. Student Quote ... Plymouth is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty. In the Spring we can go to the seaside after class and have coffee in the sunshine. You can also go deep sea fishing which is interesting, or take a bus to a beautiful beach. There is a big shopping centre in Plymouth, and if you like sports, you can go to the Plymouth Life Centre or the gym in the College. Hu Xiaoxu, China 29
