Sport at City College Plymouth If you’re an active person who enjoys sport there is a vast range of careers available to you - from being a gym instructor, personal trainer or even a strength and conditioning coach, to becoming a specialised sports coach or working in sports development. Alternatively, you could become a sports commentator or journalist, or involved with the organising and running of sporting events, on a local or national scale. As more and more people are following a healthy lifestyle and actively taking part in sport and leisure activities, the sports, recreation, health, fitness and outdoor sectors employ over 460,000 people in the UK and is a growth sector in the South West. Having the ability to teach, coach or lead in this sector can be rewarding and make a real difference to the lives of others.

When you come to City College Plymouth to study a sports programme you will be taught by sports experts with a wealth of industry experience and knowledge, as well as previous sporting stars who have played and competed professionally.

The team will help develop your sporting knowledge and guide you into a suitable career path whilst also developing your entrepreneurial and employmentbased skills.

The College runs a successful Football Performance Academy in conjunction with Plymouth Argyle Football Club and, for budding basketball players, the College has launched the Plymouth Raiders Elite Performance Academy.

The College’s sports offer promotes individual active health and wellbeing of the community, through exercise, fitness and sport. You will regularly take part in fitness sessions, games and coaching tasks, and have the opportunity to represent the College in sporting events. City College students have been involved with running school sports activities at the College and also Brickfields.

Charlie Legg - Head of Sports Academy & Performance

Charlie heads-up the sports team and created the College’s strength and conditioning course, which is only the third programme of its kind in the country. Charlie has a wealth of experience in playing and coaching sport, and was previously a tennis coach at a popular leisure club in Plymouth.

Darren Crocker - Programme Leader for Sports Therapy & Injury Rehabilitation

• Has over nine years’ experience as a Sports Therapist • Plays in the Plymouth Netball League • Qualified to Masters level in physical activity and public health

Darren leads the sports therapy and injury rehabilitation provision. He is a highly respected sports therapist and rehabilitation specialist with expertise in advanced techniques including joint mobilisation, osteopathic manipulation and sports acupuncture. Having worked with many athletes and a variety of sports, Darren has a keen interest in providing athletic care in basketball, golf, football and rugby.

Lucy always wanted to be a PE teacher but also wanted to use her specialism in public health, and so that led her to teach at the College, where the courses are much more in-depth and linked to the world of sport. Lucy has an abundance of knowledge and expertise in sports massage, working with sports injuries and health and wellbeing.

Mark is not only a teacher, but a professional business owner, having managed his own sports therapy clinic for over ten years. He is a highly respected professional in his field and is a professional board member of the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council - the national body which regulates the sports therapy sector - and a board member of the General Council of Massage Therapies.

Luke worked within the sports and leisure sectors for a number of years before joining the College to train as a lecturer. He is highly qualified as a personal trainer, outdoor instructor, swimming coach and indoor climbing instructor.

• Professional swimmer for over 16 years • Came first in 50m freestyle in mini Olympics, 1996 • Over ten years’ experience in the leisure industry Lisa has enjoyed a very successful professional swimming career for over 16 years representing Plymouth, Devon and England in competitions and it was this background that enabled her to be chosen as an Olympic games maker in London 2012. Qualified to Masters level, Lisa is well placed to teach students about the different careers in the sports and leisure industries and has herself worked as a lifeguard, swimming teacher and gym instructor.

He has a wealth of experience in the leisure industry also, having worked as a manager at Brickfields Sports Centre and in holiday camps. Sport and leisure is a big industry, and year after year, it provides work for more than 600,000 people. If you have an interest in the sport and leisure industry and need to improve your knowledge to gain employment, then this study programme could be for you. It will give you a comprehensive overview of the sport and leisure industry and put you on the right track to becoming employable. All sports performers want to be the best they can be, and participation in sport continues to grow. Ever wondered what makes winners in the top league so successful and why some sportspeople fall apart under pressure? This study programme is designed to inspire and motivate you to develop the skills and knowledge to enable you to progress to study at level 3 or to follow a career in the sports and leisure industry. It will help you to develop your own practical sports performance and improve personal fitness.

Sport is an ever-growing and dynamic industry which offers a range of opportunities within education and employment. This course focuses on refining and enhancing individual skills linked to sports leadership, coaching and massage while developing knowledge in key subject areas such as anatomy and physiology, nutrition, fitness testing and assessing risk in sport. This varied and diverse course offers the opportunity to create training and fitness programmes, coach sport sessions, deliver sports massages, participate in individual and team sports, experience outdoor activities and undertake a two week work placement.

Albion College Rugby Academy … City College Plymouth has partnered with Plymouth Albion RFC and Devonport High School for Boys (DHSB) to create the Albion College Rugby Academy. Full-time students who are studying at the College or DHSB will have the opportunity to benefit from rugby training courtesy of Plymouth Albion RFC first players and gain technical knowledge on strength and conditioning from expert staff at City College.

Sport Coaching, Development and Fitness Level: 3 Duration: 2 years Course code: DSP Do you have a passion for sport? Have you thought about a career as a sports therapist, strength and conditioning coach, health and fitness instructor or a PE teacher? Health and Wellbeing Level: 5 Duration: 2 years Course code: UF5253

This innovative Foundation Degree will deliver the skills required for you to become qualified as an advanced instructor, enabling you to work as a health trainer in cardiac rehabilitation, GP referral and back pain. The course will develop your ability to prescribe exercise in a clinical and community setting. Opportunities to work within private and public organisations will develop and expand knowledge through practical application, gaining you the required industry employability skills.

Sports Therapy and Injury Rehabilitation Level: 5 Duration: 2 years Course code: UF2691 Accredited by the Sports Therapy Organisation, our Foundation Degree helps you develop the practical skills and knowledge to confidently succeed in all areas of injury management and athlete care. You will develop extensive knowledge of injury assessment, injury aetiology, human anatomy and physiology, functional movement screening, sports nutrition, injury prevention training and rehabilitation programme design. You will practice and develop your expanding skills through our supervised student-led sports injury clinic where you will have access to a range of athletes and sports injuries.

New level 6 programme for 2016/17! Sports Therapy and Strength Conditioning Rehabilitation (subject to approval) Level: 6 Duration: 1 year Course code: TBC This programme is currently under development and will commence in September 2016 (subject to approval). It will be a natural progression for those who have successfully completed the levels 4 and 5 in sports therapy, or strength and conditioning.

Strength Conditioning and Sports Coaching Level: 5 Duration: 2 years Course code: UF3593 Do you have an interest or background in working with elite athletes? This Foundation Degree will give you the opportunity to develop practical skills and knowledge in the most effective methods of training athletes for elite level performance. Whilst you will study underpinning science related sports topics such as physiology, biomechanics and human movement, you will also develop practical skills in coaching effectiveness, Olympic weightlifting, speed, agility and plyometrics, and other athletic testing and monitoring skills.

Sports Academies The College has run the Football Performance Academy in partnership with Plymouth Argyle FC and the Raiders Elite Performance Academy successfully for over two years, supporting students into playing professionally and into international scholarships and coaching opportunities.

Football Performance Academy

Progression opportunities may include: • USA Football Scholarship • study in Sweden on an International Football Programme • trials for the British Colleges’ national team • Foundation Degrees at the College - strength and conditioning or sports therapy • Foundation Degree in Football Coaching and Development at the University of St Mark & St John.

With the Football Academy you can combine expert football coaching and fitness conditioning with a full-time study programme. You will: • take part in four hours’ football coaching per week • receive strength and conditioning training • have access to sports massage and injury recovery treatments • become part of the Association of Colleges’ Sport League • have access to potential training opportunities with the Plymouth Argyle Youth Development squad • get the chance to study a range of full-time courses.

Ben Tozer - Newcastle United FC Ben Tozer signed for Swindon Town FC after successful performances for City College in the Elite British Colleges’ League. He did enough at Swindon Town to impress Newcastle United, who paid £1 million for him when he was 17!

Raiders Elite Performance Academy

With the Raiders Academy you can combine expert basketball coaching and fitness conditioning with a full-time course. You will: • take part in three hours’ basketball coaching per day • receive twice weekly professional strength and conditioning sessions • participate in the Elite Academy Basketball League • access potential training opportunities with the Raiders Basketball Team • take part in coaching and officiating courses • study a range of full-time courses • play junior and senior national league basketball. Progression opportunities may include: • USA Basketball Scholarship • study in Europe on an Elite Development Programme • trials for the British Colleges’ national team • a scholarship with Plymouth University • Foundation Degrees at the College - strength and conditioning or sports therapy.

Case study: Luke Rankin Luke Rankin always dreamed of playing professional basketball and moved to the South West to join the Raiders basketball team at the College. With the Raiders team, the professional basketball league and the Academy in Plymouth, in his words “why would you want to go anywhere else?”. As Luke’s first year at the Raiders Academy comes to an end, Luke has really hit his stride playing for the team. Luke said:

“The teaching staff here are incredible and really know their stuff. My game has improved and I’m getting to learn a lot about sport as a business. I’m getting 20 hours of on-court tuition and basketball experience.” info@cityplym.ac.uk
