WELCOME Thank you for taking the time to read our University-level Course Guide. We are justifiably proud to offer a diverse range of high quality professional, vocational and technical university-level courses, many delivered in partnership with Plymouth University. Most of our Foundation Degrees give progression on to further study at Plymouth University, which will enable the achievement of an Honours Degree from start to finish within three years. We offer a comparable, rather than identical, experience to studying at university. What differentiates us is that we pride ourselves on our friendly and supportive environment, where lecture and tutorial groups are kept small to ensure that you get the most from your learning experience and are able to get to know your lecturers and fellow students. To make sure that you achieve the knowledge and skills that employers are looking for, all of our
university-level courses have been developed in conjunction with employers and many of our courses will see you working with industry professionals on work-based projects. City College has made a real commitment to ensuring that our students leave us prepared to make the most of every opportunity that presents itself and to be able to make a contribution from day one to their community and workplace. To support our students in achieving this we offer access to a wide range of activities to help you gain and develop the key employability and enterprise skills and attributes. Our proximity to, and partnership with, Plymouth University enables you to benefit from both College and University facilities and services. Be part of it - come and study at City College Plymouth for a quality university-level qualification.

FOUNDATION DEGREES
20 cityplym.ac.uk
info@cityplym.ac.uk
Foundation Degrees are two year courses (when studied full-time) which are equivalent to studying for the first two years of an Honours Degree at university. They are carefully designed and developed in collaboration with employers and can offer you the opportunity to combine academic study with the skills and attributes needed in the workplace. Why choose a Foundation Degree with City College Plymouth? ▪▪
▪▪
▪▪
Flexibility: many of our Foundation Degree courses are offered on a part-time basis, which can provide greater flexibility and the opportunity to carry on with work whilst you study. Where the course is considered of relevance for their business, some employers will fund your course fees and provide time for study. Several of our part-time Foundation Degrees are offered on an intensive two year basis, while others are over three years. Improved career prospects: when you complete one of our courses and graduate with a Plymouth University award, you will have the appropriate training and skills needed for success in industry and business. Employers lead in the design and development of our Foundation Degrees to ensure they meet current employment needs. The formalisation of your knowledge and skills into a qualification could open the doors to a higher level position in your field. The start of a journey: most Foundation Degrees have articulated progression routes to achieving a full Honours Degree. These are often one year ‘top-up’ courses available at Plymouth University or, in some cases, another university or partner college.
01752 305300
▪▪
▪▪
ost: studying full-time for a Foundation Degree C at the College will cost you £5,950 per year from September 2016, compared to £9,000 at many universities. Smaller group sizes: we offer our Foundation Degrees to smaller groups of students than most universities, enabling you to get to know your lecturer and fellow students, and benefit from more contact time on your course.
Our Foundation Degrees require the completion of 240 credits of study - 120 at level 4 and 120 at level 5. Please note there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability. If you are progressing to Plymouth University, please check the course fees with the University as these will be different to the fees you pay at City College.

Rebecca Kelly
Accounting and Finance Foundation Degree
Rebecca is in the second year of her Foundation Degree and has a very personal reason for wanting to become an Accountant. “It was always my Grandad’s dream to own a pub and, when he finally got it, he ended up losing his business purely because he didn’t know how to do his accounts. So it’s my hope that I can help other people who are running their dream business but don’t have the knowledge of how to do their accounts properly. “In school it’s very set in stone - they teach, you learn - but here it’s much more interactive. I think it’s a better way of learning really, because they treat you more like adults and you get more involved. “It’s so relaxed and the staff are so supportive. The classes are small, so you get a lot more attention - I know people who are at university in a class of 100 or more and it’s really intimidating if you want to ask a question. There’s loads of workshops and study skills classes you can take, so you are prepared if you want to go on to university. “After completing my degree, I want to carry on my training to become a full Chartered Accountant.”

Lisa Weeks
Early Years Foundation Degree
Lisa has been working in early years care for over ten years and joined City College to help progress her career. “There have been so many changes that have taken place in recent years in early years care and education, and on the legislation side of the job too. So for me, doing the Foundation Degree was about updating my knowledge and gaining more confidence, in both myself and my practice. “The modules are all interlinked and you’re given a free reign to explore lots of other related things. It’s really opened my eyes and has given me the confidence to share the latest ideas with my colleagues and recommend changes in how we do things; so I’ve really benefitted from it. “Working and studying at the same time could be difficult, but the College are really supportive. Being on the course focused you, as it is not always easy to study and keep up-to-date in your own time if you’re working and raising a family. “This was my first taste of university-level studying and I would have never thought that I could have done that when I was younger. Now my children are saying that I’ve given them so much inspiration - if mum can do it, then why not us?!”

Hannah Dix
Forensic Science Foundation Degree
Hannah’s love of photography led her to pursue a career in crime scene investigation. “I began looking into courses for forensic science and saw that City College Plymouth had an evening class which would suit me perfectly. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to stay on at the College and do the two year Foundation Degree. “The course was brilliant - it went into a vast range of different techniques, the different types of jobs where forensics plays a role, and also supplied a basic knowledge of chemistry, biology, and the hands-on techniques you need on the job. “The lecturers were always readily available and willing to help as and when they could. They were always up for a laugh, which made the course feel quite light hearted, despite the sometimes serious subject matter. It helped me get through and gave me great groundwork to be able to go into the second year of a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of the West of England. “I now work for Wiltshire Police as a Crime Scene Investigator and I love it. The courses I took at City College provided me with great insights into the world of forensic science and also trained me in the techniques that I use every day.”

Becci Phippen
Hospitality and Tourism Foundation Degree
Becci joined the College after working in Australia, where she caught the hospitality bug! “When I came back to the UK, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to get into. My mum had picked me up a course guide for the College and when I saw the hospitality and tourism course, I knew that it would be perfect. “At first I was really nervous; worrying that I would be the oldest on my course, but actually it was really diverse. It was really nice because you were made to feel like an adult, which is so different from my memories of school. “You learn how to work autonomously with support from the lecturers - this was really good for people like me who had been out of education for so long. If I had gone straight into university, I think I would’ve been completely caught off-guard because you have to guide your own independent learning. “The more I learned on the course, I knew I definitely wanted to continue studying at university because the subject was so enjoyable. The transition was not as hard as I expected. You see a big difference between those who have taken the College course and those who are coming to it straight from school - we’re a lot more confident and know what we’re doing. It’s given me the skills to succeed.”

Matt Besford-Foster
Live Sound Foundation Degree
Matt joined City College’s Live Sound Foundation Degree at dBs Music after deciding to pursue a career in the live music industry. “Throughout my life two things have dominated my interests: music and engineering. Somehow the two things seemed to naturally combine and my interest in sound engineering was born. “Having lecturers who were still active and highly respected within the industry was invaluable, and I wouldn’t be anywhere near where I am today without the relationships I built with them. “Since graduating, I’ve been working as a touring sound engineer, building on experience and expanding my own client base. 2015 has mainly seen me working for Newbury based Skan PA Hire. This has included being PA Tech for Hot Chip, PA Tech for David Gray, Patch Master on The Other Stage at Glastonbury Festival and looking after the English National Orchestra for their performances with Take That. Right now I am working on the Muse world tour as PA Wingman. “If you’re serious about making a career as a sound engineer, especially if you want to do touring in the live music industry, then this is the course for you. It’s not easy, but it’s so worth it. After all, there are worse ways to make a living than travelling the world, messing about with music!” 42 cityplym.ac.uk

I have always wanted to have a career that was worthwhile and knew working in rehabilitation and the Prison Service would be a career that I would enjoy and benefit from working in. “I knew I needed to get better qualifications to go into this line of work, so I decided on a Foundation Degree in Public Services at the College. The course was flexible so you could get a real insight into the different public services and focus on the areas that interested you. I also got the support I needed to re-sit my English GCSE and I went from a grade D to a B. These skills are fundamental when looking to work for the Prison Service. “The College helped me get to where I am today and the teaching staff always had time for me and the other students on the course. Iris was always interested in pursuing a career in sports medicine and joined City College to combine studying with her professional sports training as an International Cliff Diving Champion. “Standing on the top of a cliff is terrifying - but if you know what you’re doing and you train for it, you enjoy it. People say ‘oh it’s so dangerous’ but I say that I’m trained how to dive from that height. You need to have trust in yourself and trust in physics - I know the risk, but I know how to do it right. “I’m really enjoying the course and the diving specific one-to-one training I get with the strength and conditioning coaches. I think classes like anatomy and injury prevention really help me when I am diving too. I have a better understanding of how my body works and, if I get injured, I know what’s wrong and how to fix it.” Iris is the 2015 International Cliff Diving champion and is hoping to complete her degree either at Plymouth University or following City College’s newly developed BSc Sports Rehabilitation, Conditioning and Therapy Honours Degree (pending approval 2016).

Strength Conditioning and Sports Coaching Foundation Degree
After graduating from City College, Dan completed his BSc Health and Fitness degree at Plymouth University and has now secured a scholarship to study for a Masters Degree in America where he also researches, teaches and coaches. “I loved the course - so much of the theoretical knowledge learned was practically applied working with elite level athletes, either those studying at the College, on sports scholarships at the University or playing with the local professional sports teams. For an aspiring coach, being so hands-on whilst furthering my understanding of the subject was the best way to learn. “After graduating, I used the connections I had made through the course to find work as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for Plymouth Argyle Academy and U18 teams alongside working with athletes from a variety of sports. I found it immensely satisfying to see both students and the athletes I worked with adapt and improve with the support of the work we were doing. “I believe my experiences at City College - the practical skills, science-based knowledge and the connections they gave me - offered me the greatest opportunities and the best start in the exercise science profession.” 54 cityplym.ac.uk

CASE STUDY
Alexandra Goodge Construction HNC
Alexandra felt she wasn’t suited to higher education, but now she plans to complete a Foundation Degree and carry on right up to masters level. “I ploughed straight into full-time work to make sure that I had that wage coming in, but I realised: I’m never going to earn more than £18,000 a year without having to spend 15 years or more working up the career ladder - and even then, I’ll only ever hit a certain level. It was frustrating when you know that you can do the job and you have the ability to do more. “I didn’t have the grades to go straight to university, I went along to one of the College’s drop-in evenings and had a good chat with the construction lecturer. He took the time to listen to what I wanted to achieve and advised me that the HNC would give me the best start. “My experience at the College has taught me that there isn’t just one way to follow a career in construction; rather than going straight into university, you can do your Foundation Degree and top up. That way you get to spend two years in that more close-knit community where you have more one-on-one time and that important peer structure.”

Zephy Hood
Performing Arts HND
Before applying to City College to study a HND in Performing Arts, Zephy was an Aircraft Engineer in the Royal Navy. After the birth of her daughter in 2010, she decided to leave the Royal Navy to pursue a more creative career. Zephy completed her first year on the BTEC course and then progressed to the HND. “This course has been so amazing! It teaches you to recognise and use your skills and to get out of your comfort zone. The lecturers all have industry experience and it makes the whole learning process so much better.” “I feel like I know my own strengths and that I will be ready for work at the end of this course. Thanks to the HND, I’ve already been out there working on various projects and the ultimate goal is for a few of us to get together and form a theatre company, creating our own work and touring locally. “I feel very privileged to have been on this course. It’s been really helpful and I feel very lucky to have had this opportunity.”

UCAS TARIFF POINTS SYSTEM What is the UCAS tariff? It’s the conversion of further education, level 3 qualifications, such as BTECs, AS and A Levels, VCEs and OCRs etc, into one points system that universities can use to evaluate applications and make offers.
With so many students applying it is best to apply as early as possible, but it is never too late to apply to the College - we may have places available right up until September for courses starting that year.
How does it work?
Simply give us a call on 01752 305300 to check if we have space on the course of your choice and, if we can offer you a place, we will take you through the application procedure.
Each qualification and grade is worth a number of points. All grades and qualifications are added together to give a total tariff point score.
You can find more information on the UCAS tariff tables on the UCAS website by visiting www.ucas.com/students/ucas_tariff/.
Don’t miss the deadlines! UCAS has a series of deadlines for students to meet, which you can find on their website www.ucas.com. Deadlines are important; please make sure you know when to apply.
