Dear St. Andrew’s Community, The holidays are approaching and I’m wishing you warm and meaningful celebrations with loved ones! I have a lot to be thankful for this year with the incredible start of this 2023-2024 academic year. Being together as a community on campus, seeing our students engaging in their classes and extracurricular activities, and honoring the school’s many traditions have been invigorating.

In the following pages, you will read about last school year’s many highlights: accomplishments in academics, athletics, and the arts, innovative programs, celebrations of our school, and the impact of our generous donor and volunteer community. “Demonstrating pride and elevating tradition” was a guiding theme last year. In my Commencement address for the Class of 2023, I spoke about the flight of the monarch butterfly. I was inspired after seeing one float across campus and learning more about its family’s migratory pattern. Their journey spans more than 2,500 miles and takes at least four generations of monarchs to complete—wow! The first monarchs you see each summer in Rhode Island are the grandchildren of the butterflies that left last year. This resonated with me because their story is symbolic of our students, and how their journey begins with the dreams and the immeasurable love, dedication, and significant sacrifice that their families made for them.

St. Andrew’s School is what it is today because of the dreams, love, dedication, and sacrifice of our founder Father William Merrick Chapin. He worked tirelessly to bring the first orphans to campus, where they were provided with food, care, home, and an education. Alongside Father Chapin, the boys built the Little Sanctuary, the small

building connected to the Chapel, where they took their classes and

through this building to the stage. It is a sacred tradition of the school, and the Little Sanctuary stands to remind us that success is not solely defined by what we achieve for ourselves, but also by how we care for and uplift others. Since the school’s beginning 130 years ago, Father Chapin’s commitment to service, action, and inclusion has remained at the heart of our mission. Everything we do at the school starts with these values. They guide our open access International Baccalaureate curriculum, our athletics and arts programs, and our residential programming. We continue to provide exceptional support for our students—academically, socially, physically, and emotionally— and strengthen our community by working together, believing the best in each other, and having a lot of fun along the way. I am so proud to be part of the St. Andrew’s community. As we continue into the future, remember the flight of the monarch. Remember that you are essential to our progress and you are not alone in it. Here’s to a bright rest of the school year and an even brighter future! Warmly,

David Tinagero, Head of School

Endowing a Legacy of Learning Enhancement The Dr. Dana Gurney Learning Support Chair In April at the Saints Gala, Dr. Dana Gurney was honored for her tremendous contributions to the school. As an expression of appreciation, Susan O. and David A. Brown ’52 announced the creation of the Dr. Dana Gurney Learning Support Chair with a generous endowment gift to assure that St. Andrew’s is positioned to help youth confidently grow into promising adults. To learn more about the gala, see page 22. “We are so thankful to the Browns for making a lasting gift in recognition of Dana’s incredible work and impact on the St. Andrew’s community. St. Andrew’s will continue to prioritize creating an educational environment that allows each of our students to understand and develop their full potential with skill and self-confidence,” said President of the Board Anton Giedt.

She has a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Lewis and Clark College and nearly three decades of experience working in both public and private domestic and international schools, including The Learning Center for Deaf Children and Landmark School, International School Manila, International School Kenya, and most recently Hong Kong International School.

“The Dr. Dana Gurney Learning Support Chair will ensure a pathway for students with all learning profiles,” said Director of Development Kerrie Donahue. “With the establishment of this fund and the generosity of the Brown family, we are pleased that other donors will have the opportunity to support this important program.”

“I can already tell St. Andrew’s is a special place that creates an environment where all students can carve their unique path both in and outside the classroom, allowing them to be successful and find a love for learning. I am excited to help St. Andrew’s students find their path and support them as they dive into learning every day,” said Courtney Pierce, Dr. Dana Gurney Learning Support Chair.

2023 Happy White Visiting Artist Jamison Albritton ’04 Jamison “Jaima” Albritton ’04 was the Happy White Visiting Artist this past school year. He spent a week in April working with our MYP and DP art classes, sharing his techniques and ways to work with his signature Posca markers. During his visit, Jaima helped students create an original mural for a stairwell wall in Adams Hall. Students created small drawings in his style and they selected the top design to be made into a mural; the chosen design was made by Maria Fuster ’24. The grade 12 DP Visual Art students drew Maria’s design on the wall, first in pencil and then with Posca markers. At the end of Jaima’s visit, he spoke at Morning Meeting, candidly sharing his journey from high school graduation to world-

renowned artist. His work developed from notebook sideline doodles, to hand-painted shoes, to murals and more. Jaima has done murals for Shake Shack, Collab at WeWork, Connecticut Post Mall, Artel Hotel, Ollie’s Ice Cream, Paper Plane Coffee, Illumina East Yoga, and a live painting for Daniel Wellington’s flagship store opening at Rockefeller Center, just to name a few. Posca markers are Jaima’s signature tool, and he was recently commissioned by Posca for a special project.

“Everyone can draw,

but you have to learn to see” is a quote from former St. Andrew’s visual arts

teacher Nancy Azano that

has stuck with Jaima since his high school days.

Jaima generously donated several jackets and backpacks featuring his artwork to students. The mural on the Adams Hall stairwell even features St. Andrew’s unofficial mascot Pal in its design. ST. ANDREW’S SCHOOL REPORT OF GIVING 2022–2023 | 15

Celebrating Academic Growth and Innovation International Baccalaureate Exams The Class of 2023 was the school’s inaugural class to participate in the International Baccalaureate exam period. Last May, 18 seniors sat through the two-week exam period filled with rigorous external and internal assessments. Eleven of the students were Diploma Candidates pursuing the full IB Diploma, and seven were Course Candidates. They dedicated 12,870 hours to receiving direct instruction and support to prepare for the exams—that’s no small feat for our students or our teachers! The IB exams measure the extent to which students have mastered advanced academic skills including analyzing and presenting information, evaluating and constructing arguments, and solving problems creatively. Our Diploma Candidates completed the entire program of IB classes and core work (CAS, TOK, EE) during their junior and senior years. Students can earn college credit or advanced standing based on the individual scores for each of their courses. For students who earn the IB Diploma, some universities start students with sophomore standing for their first year. Our Course Candidates took individual IB course exams with the potential of earning college credits.

Expanding our Range of Support New Sensory Room Opens on Campus As part of The Wolf Academy at St. Andrew’s School and through a generous grant from The Champlin Foundation, a sensory room was created on campus to provide a primary space for therapeutic programming as directed by our occupational therapists. The sensory room was outfitted with specialized equipment selected by occupational therapists and program professionals including suspension systems, weighted equipment and materials, and cardiovascular equipment to service the internal senses and systems essential in learning. The sensory room is a key component of The Wolf Academy education. Students work with occupational therapists and teachers to develop plans consisting of exercises and strategies. These plans support student academic and non-academic outcomes, including social skills, math, reading and writing (i.e. literacy), behavior management, recess, participation in sports, self-help skills, prevocational/vocational participation, transportation, and more. While this space was designed for The Wolf Academy, it is open for use by all St. Andrew’s students. Both St. Andrew’s and the Wolf School are proud of our collaboration and partnership aimed to best serve complex learners. The sensory room is an important part of the program to support students. We look forward to how this room will continue to be utilized and grow over time as The Wolf Academy at St. Andrew’s also grows.

Riding For Focus with Outride Thanks to a generous donation and the perseverance of the faculty, St. Andrew’s launched a new and exciting physical education program this past school year, taking advantage of our expansive campus, proximity to the East Bay Bike Path, and our appreciation for outdoor activity in overall health and learning. This spring during their Physical Health and Education hour, our sixth graders embarked on Outride’s Riding for Focus curriculum: a program designed to “promote cycling as an outlet for students to improve their cognitive, physical, and socio-emotional wellbeing.” Our students use our new fleet of Specialized bikes and helmets that are part of the Riding for Focus program. The founder of Outride and the CEO of Specialized, Mike Sinyard, started the program when he noticed the impact of cycling on his focus. As someone who has dealt with the impact of ADHD his whole life, Mike noticed an immediate change and improvement in his symptoms after going for bike rides and started the Outride program to explore the difference Riding for Focus could make in the lives of middle school students.

Outride at St. Andrew’s is an opportunity for our sixth-grade students to learn a new skill and be kids while moving their bodies and connecting with nature. Alongside trained faculty Charley Pelissier and Samantha Medeiros, students biked on campus and around town while building their confidence and learning more about their own cognitive growth. Already we have seen the program’s many benefits: boosted focus in the classroom; pragmatic skill building; collaborative learning; and enjoyment at exploring the community in a new way. “Not only did our students get a chance to be outside and to hone their biking skills, some of them were first time bikers and received the coaching and encouragement from their peers. It was rewarding to watch them become better bikers and to build community with each other through the sport,” says Charley Pelissier. The Riding for Focus program also connects our students with a nationwide study to prove the impact of cycling on focus in the classroom and assist in furthering Outride’s mission across the country. We are looking forward to the continuation and possible expansion of this program in the future! In addition to sixth graders participating in the Riding for Focus curriculum, middle and upper schoolers could also choose cycling for an after-school activity during the spring semester. Twenty-four students ranging from newcomers to experienced riders participated, learning and strengthening proper cycling skills and riding off campus each day to explore the area’s bike paths, roads, and dirt trails. Cycling etiquette, road safety, and increasing skills and endurance were always front of mind as students ventured out into the surrounding neighborhoods. Many thanks to faculty and staff Luanettee Colebrooke, Angelina LaCarrubba, and Rachel Shapiro for assisting Charley Pelissier with this activity. Learn more about Outride at outridebike.org

Kate and Josh White “Our entire family is so grateful for our time at St. Andrew’s. The sense of community and belonging that our son experienced as a student has helped him grow into an independent thinker who is kind, confident, and ready to face the challenges ahead. We will always reflect with gratitude on the relationships with both adults and friends that were forged during these seven years. Although our gifts may not always be substantial in size, we know that when viewed as part of a larger picture, family engagement and participation in the St. Andrew’s Fund makes a powerful impact on the opportunities given to every student. We will always make supporting this school, which has supported our son so well, a family priority.”

“Participation in the St. Andrew’s Fund makes a powerful impact on the opportunities given to every student.”

The Whites joined the St. Andrew’s community in 2016, when their son Carson ’23 entered sixth grade. Carson is currently a freshman at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, where he is studying Game Sound Design. Their daughter Margaret is a junior at Barrington High School. Kate was a dedicated volunteer of the St. Andrew’s Parent Association (SAPA), serving on SAPA’s board as secretary for two years, vice president for one year, and president for the 2022-2023 school year. Josh is Vice President of Transportation, Logistics, and Omni-Channel Fulfillment at CVS Health, and enjoys serving on the board of Foster Forward, a RI organization dedicated to empowering lives impacted by foster care. The White Family lives in Barrington, Rhode Island.

GIVING TO ST. ANDREW ’ S

THANK YOU FOR THE GOOD COMPANY AND GENEROUS SUPPORT! S AV E T H E D AT E

Saints Gala Thursday, April 25, 2024 The Saints Gala on April 27 was truly an evening of elegance in the Ballroom at The Providence G. More than 200 guests gathered for this special celebration in recognition of honorees Pamela Faulkner and Dana Gurney. We proudly honored Pam for her 40 years of dedication and service as a Trustee and Dana for her 18 years of leadership in Learning Services before her retirement following the 2022-2023 school year. The evening featured live entertainment by student performers and the Leo Codiga Trio, a delicious meal from Pranzi Catering & Events, and a spirited live auction led by Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers.

Five Bridge Inn Rehoboth, MA More information at standrews-ri.org/gala

At the gala, we announced two special awards in recognition of Pam and Dana’s lasting legacies: St. Andrew’s annual musical production has been named the “Pam Faulkner Musical” beginning this year. Aside from being one of the most active and prominent civic leaders on the East Bay, Pam has been a beloved member in the local theater and music community, whether performing onstage or watching in the audience. Naming the school’s musical after Pam was an easy choice because of her love and generous support of the arts. The “Dr. Dana Gurney Learning Support Chair” was created through the generosity of Susan O. and David A. Brown ‘52 to honor Dana’s work and legacy at the school. For more information about this endowment fund and honoree Dana Gurney, please see page 5.

“When you connect with an institution’s mission and values, I believe it is necessary to take time to embrace and support it. That is what I hoped to do when I joined this community years ago, and it has turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made.” Pam Faulkner Above: Pam and Bob Faulkner at St. Andrew’s 125th Celebration in 2018

Every year, St. Andrew’s hosts two fundraising events (a spring gala and summer golf tournament) to celebrate our community and raise support for our school’s mission and programs. If you’re interested in serving on either planning committee, please reach out to Director of Development Kerrie Donahue. 22 | ST. ANDREW’S SCHOOL REPORT OF GIVING 2022–2023

Stanley and Dorothy Shaw Stanley “Stan” and Dorothy “Dottie” Shaw arrived at St. Andrew’s in September 1964 with their four young children, two of whom are now alumni: Steve graduated in 1982 and David in 1986. Stan taught physics, chemistry, algebra, IPS photography, and more throughout his teaching career at St. Andrew’s, and also served as the school’s Director of Education for more than 20 years. In the athletic program, he coached JV basketball for two years and held the important role of basketball scoreboard operator for 55+ years. Even after his teaching career ended, Stan continued to serve students as a substitute teacher, tutor, and officiate until 2021. In February, we honored Stan at a boys prep basketball game for his service to the school and presented him with a banner for display in Sage Gym. Dottie passed away peacefully surrounded by family in January. She was deeply loved. Many of her family and friends made gifts to St. Andrew’s in Dottie’s memory. We are grateful for their support in remembrance of a wonderful person whose memory will forever live on in our community.

Jonathan Conklin “My father’s application to St. Andrew’s indicates my grandmother was asked to pay $13 per month toward the School’s support. I have witnessed firsthand the extraordinary level of commitment the School makes to its students. Over one-third of gross tuition revenue is awarded back to students as financial aid, and over half of the students receive financial aid. I am pleased to be able to continue my investment in the school by naming St. Andrew’s in my estate plans. Jon Conklin, left, with David Brown ’52 at the 2022 Saints Gala Jonathan Conklin joined the Finance Committee in 1996, having been recommended by Trustee and alumnus David A. Brown ’52. He is also a member of the Education and Student Life Committee, and he served as a Trustee for eighteen years. Jon began his professional career in public accounting, was CFO at a local manufacturing company, and lastly was Business Manager at the Paul Cuffee School, a public charter school in Providence. He graduated from Hamilton College and received an MBA from the University of Michigan. Jon’s ties to St. Andrew’s go back to 1931 when his father enrolled in the sixth grade. Dr. J. Wallace Conklin also served as a Trustee. The family legacy continues, as Jon’s niece Amy is currently a student at St. Andrew’s.
