WINTER EDITION 2016-17

SAINT FRANCIS

The first Sunday of Advent was November 27. Advent is a time to attend to the message of Christ. It is a time when hope and joy should fill our hearts. God depends on us to extend visible signs of love, peace and harmony. Use this Advent season to bring the light of Christ to those around us. At Christmas we celebrate “peace on earth and good will to all.” We hope our students and staff enjoy this time with friends and family as we give thanks to the many blessings we experience in our lives. Organizing hampers for families in need has been a longstanding tradition at Saint Francis. We appreciate all food items, gift cards and house hold items that were given generously so others within our community could feel the love and joy of the season. In addition to food hampers, and in true Browns spirit, many coats were donated to Jacket Racket to help Calgarians through our harsh winters. Thank you to all our sport teams and their coaches for their outstanding seasons. The teams have been well supported by our many fans and student turnout for all games and events have been simply amazing this year. Congratulations to our Saint Francis Senior Boys Football team for winning both the City and Provincial Championship titles. The game against the Bev Facey Falcons was a nail-biter and the Browns came from behind to score a touchdown in the last 23 seconds of play to win. The following link shows a picture of the iconic play that put the Browns out in front Calgary Sun-. Special recognition is also extended to our Junior Girls Volleyball team who defeated Dr. E.P. Scarlet 3 games to 0 to sweep the Div. 1 Junior City Championship. The Browns also made a big splash in the pool this year with over 60 students competing in the City Finals Swim Meet. The basketball season is well underway with both our senior teams kicking off the season in tournament play and the Higher Hoops kickoff tournament. At the beginning of December we hosted the 47th Annual Saint Francis Invitational (SFI) senior boys basketball tournament. Congratulations to Bishop McNally high school who were the SFI champions. The tournament was a big success and we extend our appreciation to the tournament organizers for their hard work. Browns Ball was a beautiful event with this year’s theme ‘Every Adventure Begins With a First Step’ and close to 900 students were in attendance. The decorations for the event were spectacular and our students looked amazing. We appreciate the supervision and support of all our parent and staff volunteers who gave up their Friday night to spend time with our students. Our school community is blessed with many students who shared their gifts and talents to make this year’s Fine Arts Gala a great success. This fun and entertaining production of ‘You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown’ was performed over the course of five plays. The student actors responded beautifully to the challenge of this play and entertained the audience with their humorous performances. During intermission our guests were entertained by the school’s Jazz Band and Choral group. This event was surrounded by incredible displays of student art work and catering was provided by our Grade 12 Foods class. Our Music department’s Christmas concert ‘A Christmas Sleigh Ride’ was also a great success. Guests were treated to the outstanding talents of our Jazz Band, Jazz Choir, Concert Choir and Show Choir. To conclude the evening the Concert Band of over 110 students played over seven songs and the pieces were embellished with soloists and dancers from Mambo Productions. It was a beautiful evening and we are so proud of the achievements made by our students. This week our Dance Department performed ‘Escape’ which is about a group of students who discover their friend is entrapped in a room along with other dancers. The show intermits dance performances throughout the theater with students collaborating to find a way out. In closing, we wish to acknowledge the great works of our students and staff. We are proud of our school’s accomplishments and we look forward to our second semester which will bring forth many new opportunities. Please know our families are welcome to the school to support the athletic and artistic talents of our students. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! Enjoy the holiday and may God bless and watch over our staff, students and their families during the Christmas break. Mark Berger, Principal

To the Saint Francis School Community,

Thank you very much for your donation to Jacket Racket! Many of your coats have already gone out in orders. On a cold, windy day, think about some kids all bundled up in warm winter gear! And a warm thank you to Kim who so kindly helped our volunteers load your donations. Here are coats at Kingsland School, arranged by size, getting ready to go to schools. I have information overload and I’m short tempered. Mom and Dad don’t understand today’s world.” 4. “My struggles are a big deal and I want guidelines and boundaries. On October 26, twenty students from Student Council and SFVC got to spend the day with thousands of other students from around the province to take part in WE Day Alberta. This is an annual event put on by the Kielburger brothers and their various organizations in an effort to inspire youth to make a difference in the world—big or small. Students must earn tickets to WE Day by volunteering in their communities to help make a difference. At the concert-like event, we were able to listen to Chris Hadfield, Paula Abdul, and Rick Hansen talk about their lives and inspire us to create a better world. As always, Marc and Craig Kielburger had amazing words of inspiration. The day also had a ton of fun with musical performances by Classified, Brett Kissel and Tyler Shaw. WE Day is the kick-off for a year of initiatives started by WE. This amazing organization gave teachers resources to get students involved for months after the event. Through campaigns like WE Scare Hunger, WE Are Change, and WE Stand Together, we were given so many ideas to live WE in our communities throughout the year. Leaving the event, all of us were excited to put some of the ideas created at the event into action. Thanks to Ms. Gajdos for taking us all to this great event! SUMMER PROGRAMS Book an appointment with Mrs. Campbell through Mrs. Pilon in Student Services. WHAT IS CAREER PLANNING? Career planning is a unique life long process for each person. Your Career Practitioner will work with you to learn more about how your interests, skills, values and personality impact your choice of career direction. It is an active process that students begin in their Career and Life Management class and continues with meetings with your Career Practitioner and your Student Services Counselor. You will be making career decisions throughout your life.

DOES THE CAREER CENTRE OFFER CAREER TESTS AND ASSESSMENTS? Any “career tests” are tools for students to learn more about themselves and potential careers that may be of interest to them. The “tests” are designed to provide career suggestions for exploration but there is no test that will tell a student what they should as a career. The goal is for the students to learn as much as they can about themselves and the careers that are available so they themselves can make an informed decision about their first step after high school. WILL THE CAREER CENTRE FIND ME A JOB? We do everything we can to give students the tools to find their own jobs. That may mean assisting students with creating a resume and cover letter, doing practice job interviews and talking about job-search skills.

CAN I GET HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS FOR MY PART-TIME JOB OR VOLUNTEER WORK? Yes, you can! You must see Mr. Buckie, Work Experience Teacher in N112.

FROM THE CAREER PRACTITIONER AND OFF CAMPUS TEACHER

It has been a busy fall, without question. Saint Francis hosted the Out-of-Province Post-Secondary Fair on October 26 and the Alberta PostSecondary Fair on September 28. December is always a busy time at Saint Francis high school. Brown’s Ball, SFI and end of term exams and assignments. Thankfully, each class was able to take a little time to celebrate the season of Advent by attending Mass at Canadian Martyrs Parish. Thanks to Father Vincent, Father Jean and Father Gabriel. Morning Mass happens every Wednesday at 8:15 in the school Chapel and will continue next semester. I would like to take this time to wish all of the families at Saint Francis High School a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Christmas is a wonderful season for families to take time to enjoy each other. However, as a parent, I also understand how stressful it can be. The pressure to make it a perfect Christmas can often feel overwhelming, but, to borrow a line from Frozen, maybe it is time to ‘let it go’. Nobody will remember if the stuffing was a little dry or if the Elf on the Shelf never actually made it off the shelf. It is time to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and to celebrate the joy that Christ has brought to us. Mary, just like all of us, probably felt stressed. Far away from home, no place to have the baby. Would it all be ok? In the end it was. There was no fancy nursery or designer crib but there was a perfect little baby. Remember that feeling of pure love and joy you had when you first held your own perfect little child? When you looked at that precious little face and finally understood what love really feels like? That is the joy of Christmas. When I talk to students about why they love Christmas, most of them say it is the “feeling”. It is all the little traditions each family has established for themselves. The sense of peace they get from being in a family that loves them. It’s not the gifts, it’s not how much you spent but just the gift of family. So this year, worry less about the turkey, the decorations, and the list that never seems to end, and spend more time taking in the “feeling”. It’s what your kids love the most and what Christmas is all about. Thank you to all the students and parents who contributed to our hamper program this year. Thanks to your generous support we were able to provide hampers to Saint Francis families in need this year. A special thanks to Tim Sebastien with Western Energy Services Corp. for the generous donation of gift cards and to Lisa McGovern from Superstore for the donation of reusable boxes and bags.

Makerspace in the Learning Commons creates a Chemical Reaction Mrs. Hobor had some science in store for us this Makerspace. A chemical reaction!!! We were able to use household ingredients to make a chemical reaction. We used vinegar, baking soda, and apples. We used the apples, cored out, to hold a tablespoon of baking soda and we poured vinegar on top. Wow, a chemical reaction!!!! Here is what the ES ll Students had to say…“making a fizz” “think it was going to blow up” “like an explosion” “holy moly a chemical reaction” “this is called science”

By Aidan Fulton The 2016 Saint Francis trip to the Bamfield Marine Research Station is something I will remember for the rest of my life. The thought of being able to do Science on the edge of two frontiers; the ocean and miles of forest separating us from the nearest town is so enchanting. The best part is that we got to live that for four days. We went out on boats, used chemicals in labs, explored beaches, touched all manner of sea life, and visited the town of Bamfield (population less than 200) and all the history the cute place contains. I hope to go back someday…

“Every Adventure Begins with a First Step.” Cheshire Cat. As the students took their first steps through the front entrance of the school, the whimsical decorations, lights and balloons created a celebratory atmosphere filled with laughter, excitement and music. Dressed for a night of dancing, students were in awe as they crossed the threshold and were transported to this year’s theme, “Adventure in Wonderland.” Cellphones flickered everywhere capturing each special moment. The gym shook from the vibrations of the music pulsating out of the speakers. Everyone danced to their favorite tunes being played by DJ Fayyaz with Pez Productions. In the cafeteria, time flew by as students gathered with their friends to commemorate the night. As the evening drew to a close, Grade 10 and 11 students left smiling despite their aching feet while the Grade 12’s slowly exited, reluctant to see their last Browns Ball coming to an end. This wonderful evening would not be possible without the countless hours invested by Student Council and the many student volunteers. We were aided by administration, constables, teachers and the numerous parent volunteers who ensured that the evening was safe and enjoyable. To all those who invested time into Brown’s Ball, Thank You! Student Council

The Senior Browns Football Team captured their second straight Provincial Title on November 26. After defeating Notre Dame in the City Final, the Browns travelled to Raymond, Alberta to face the Comets. As always, playing the Comets on their home field is a difficult task and the Comets played very well. However, they were not able to compete with the size and power of the Browns running game and they pulled out the victory. In the Provincial Final the Browns faced the undefeated Bev Facey Falcons out of Sherwood Park, Alberta. A talented team that had been rolling over opponents all year long. This game was a true defensive battle with each team’s offence struggling to gain yards or points. The Browns trailed for most of the second half but in the fourth quarter with 2 minutes left, the Browns offence put together a final drive that resulted in a touchdown and a final score of 16-11 for the back to back Tier 1 City and Provincial Champion Browns. In true Browns spirit, everyone should be very proud of the commitment and work ethic our players demonstrated throughout the year. The team played their best in the toughest games and never quit. A sincere thank you to the players, parents, and coaches for an outstanding season.

The Junior Browns Football Team had a very exciting, successful season. Losing to only one team all year, the Browns came up short in the City Final in midNovember. A team that stressed doing the little things right and playing with intensity, the Browns certainly impressed all who had the pleasure of watching them play. It was amazing seeing the team grow together as a Family, and the bonds formed amongst teammates was incredible. They even had an opportunity to rub shoulders with some celebrities as they volunteered at Beakerhead and a We Day Charities Benefit Concert. The team truly personified what it means to be a Brown.

The Saint Francis Girls Volleyball Team captured the Junior Girls Division 1 Volleyball. City Championship by defeating EP Scarlett 3-0. This was the first time in 26 years that Saint Francis girls won this title. The team was undefeated in league and won 3 of the 4 tournaments they entered. We are very proud of this team. Every day they worked hard to get better, and they did it as a team. We would like to thank all the staff, students and parents who supported us this season. Go Browns Go!

The Saint Francis Junior Boys Volleyball team had a season of growth and learning. After initial success on the court, the team struggled near the end of the season, even though individuals continued to improve and develop. The team seemed to play their best against superior competition and gave the top teams such as Aberhart and Scarlett a run for their money. Thanks to all of the players, parents, parent managers and Assistant Coach Beth for the wonderful season.

The 2016-17 Senior Girls Volleyball team had an outstanding year. A veteran laden squad with 6 returning players, the girls came out of the gates with one thing on their mind…dominating. With impressive wins in their opening few tournaments, including a win over top 5 provincially ranked Bev Facey, the girls were well on their way to their goal of a city championship. At their home tourney the girls played a thrilling match in the final and beat their rival Bishop Grandin in the deciding set 16-14 to capture the Saint Francis Invitational tournament. Heading into playoffs the girls were poised to make a long run, ranked #3 going in. However, a few key injuries and a heartbreaking loss stopped that goal short. Nonetheless, this year’s girls team will be defined by their “never say die attitude” and can carry their heads high as they had an amazing season. A big thank you to coaches Bernie Restauro and Kelsey Vail who volunteered so much of their time! #GoBrownsGo!

The Senior Boys were very competitive over the course of the season. By the great leadership from our three Grade 12’s (Michael McAlpine, Will Aitken and Coulson Greaves), we were able to make it to Division 1 Quarter Finals. With more than half of the players returning next year, we look to better ourselves even more. Overall the season was filled with tons of laughter, inside jokes, hard work and great team camaraderie. I thank my players for the great memories that we shared and look forward to next year. #gobears

The Saint Francis Browns are defending Provincial Champions and they know they will be facing the best their competition has to offer each and every game. The Browns are a hardworking team, that will play with tenacity, and dedication. This is a close group of girls that share a respect for the game, they share a respect for each other, and they share a pride for the logo on their jersey. Go Browns Go!

The Browns will feature a potent attack with five Grade 12 players which include four returnees from a team that went to provincials last year. These players will be joined by seven members of the Division 2 Junior City Champions. These Grade 11 players will bring their defensive skills and enthusiasm to try to end the streak this season.

SFI 47 was a complete success! The games were very competitive. The Saint Francis High School student body was very enthused and involved in the event. The committee is excited to start planning SFI 48! See you next year!

Well done to our Junior Girls Basketball Team, who opened their season by winning the Saint Francis Junior Girls Tournament! Dominating wins over Forest Lawn and Bishop Grandin were followed by a convincing victory over William Aberhart in the final. Congratulations to Julia Beaumont, who was chosen the Tournament MVP.

The 2016-17 edition of the Browns Junior Boys Basketball Team is made up of proven athletes with a love for hoops! More than 55 players came out during tryout week. We expect to be competitive in league play this year, with vets KyleJ9 (KJ) and Arnas21 leading the way. Look for hustle on defense and ravenous drives to the rim from starters like RyanL23, Matt ‘Wild Man’7, and SF’s own ‘MrT’, TyshonB. Chairmen of the Boards are Neil ‘PrimeTime'8 and DominicV12. Setting our plays this year in the backcourt will be key - so cheer on Eli10, Ethan4, CarsonS13, Cisco11, Chance ‘TakeAChanceonMe’6. The more fans in the stands - the better our players will play…so come—be loud, be proud, be Brown! #alwaysabrown

The 2016 Swim Season has ended with a big splash! The City Finals were held on November 29 at Repsol Sport Centre and Saint Francis had 62 swimmers competing in 3 different categories. Placing 8 th out of over 20 schools, our swimmers had excellent individual swim times and amazing team spirit! For many of our swimmers, it was their first time at a swim meet and they learned the “ropes” (not lane ropes!) from our competitive swimmers! Go Browns Go!

Thank you so much to our parents who volunteered their time at the meet – this is the second largest high school sports event in Canada and it would not have been possible without the 100+ parent volunteers it takes to run an event this size. Thank you for your time and your commitment.

Thank you to our coaches Deirdre Peters, Darryl Barth, Karen Wadson and Daniel Pullen. We will see swimmers on deck again next October!

The Saint Francis Girls Soccer team enjoyed a very successful season in 2016. After the completion of the regular season, the Brown’s were in a three-way tie for first place. In the playoffs, the Brown’s defeated Lord Beaverbrook by a 7-2 margin, but fell in the Division 1 semi-finals to William Aberhart by a score of 3-1. Congratulations on a fine season Browns!

By Sofia Durante The Drama program at Saint Francis is definitely one of the best in the Calgary Catholic School District. There are many types of Drama classes you can take…regular Drama class, Advanced Acting class, and Theatrical Production which includes the fall musical and the musical theatre show every spring. My name is Sofia Durante and I am in Grade 12, but I started drama in grade 10. My first drama course was Advanced Acting. The Advanced Acting course is an amazing way to use your teamwork and acting skills and your creativity. Students from Grade 10-12 are involved and we write our own show that we tour around to Junior High Schools performing. Advanced Acting has allowed me to take my acting to new levels, make lots of friends, and build my creativity. It helped me grow as a leader, writer and performer. Advanced Acting increases your knowledge about the theatre and your acting skills. The drama productions at Saint Francis are incredible. The people that work on these shows give it their all throughout the process. Even if you just go to audition it’s an amazing experience. For the past 3 years the main fall productions I have been in were “Stage Door”, “Twelve Angry Jurors”, and now this year “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown.” This year I played Lucy, a lead role and my dream since junior high, in “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown”. I worked with so many talented people, and under the direction of our current Drama Teacher, Mrs. Duma-Lorincz, along with the very talented Mrs. Miotti. Musical Theatre is another favourite class of mine. We work from 3-4 Broadway shows, doing musical numbers from each production. We then combine our talent and knowledge to make one big production. We sing, dance, act, and we have a great time. The Drama program at Saint Francis has given me the opportunity to express myself when I couldn’t, and I have learned so much from my peers, and my wonderful teacher Mrs. Duma-Lorincz who I am forever grateful to for giving me many opportunities. This is an amazing program for students who want to pursue a career in the arts.

The students in the music program have had a very busy performance season. The Jazz Band and the Jazz Choir Performed at the Fine Art Gala on December 1 to a large enthusiastic crowd. The Concert Choir performed at MDH Junior High on November 23 to a wonderful audience. The Choir performed at St. Margaret’s Junior High on December 5 along with our vocal jazz students and did a wonderful job. Everyone looked and sounded wonderful! Choir has been singing at the Advent Liturgies which took place throughout December. The Choirs participated in the Districts High School Choral Festival on December 6. Over 600 choristers performed at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The music program presented “A Christmas Sleigh Ride” which took place December 14, at the University of Calgary’s Rosza Center. Congratulations to all 160 students who performed! Finally, a huge thank you to our wonderful music parent volunteers. We cannot run all that we do in the program without your help. Special thanks to JulieToblan , Rosalie Ward, Theresa Hyshka, and Leanne Zanutto for all their countless hours on uniforms!! And thanks to our President, Grace Whitehead for all her work!

The dance department has been busy this December performing! You may have seen the Pep Rally Dancers performing an outstanding 7 minute piece at the annual SFI Basketball Tournament. All the dances were choreographed by students and the performance was stellar. We recently presented the semester end Dance Show, entitled Escape. The show consisted of a variety of dance styles including, hip hop, swing and contemporary. Kudos to all the students for their hard work and exemplary dance skills. The show was a huge success! Stay tuned for more upcoming events and dance performances next semester!

It happens every fall, influenza arrives in Alberta and takes a serious toll on our communities. Influenza is a real threat. It’s also preventable. Influenza immunization was available free of charge, to all Albertans six months of age and older. It’s the single most effective means of protecting your family from influenza. By getting immunized early in the season you will all have the opportunity to respond to immunization and produce antibodies that will arm you against the influenza viruses throughout the season. Each year, influenza vaccine is developed to protect us against those strains of virus likely to circulate in our community. Though vaccine effectiveness may vary, know this, last season influenza vaccine cut Albertan’s risk of influenza by half. Without immunization Albertans were completely at risk. And we do mean all Albertans. Pregnant women, seniors, children, and individuals with underlying health conditions or compromised immune systems are at greater risk for severe complications. However, without immunization, even healthy Albertans – that includes you, parents! – are at risk of severe illness and even death. Sixty-two Albertans died with influenza last season and more than 1,600 Albertans were hospitalized. Let’s do better this year. Let’s make influenza one less thing your family has to deal with this winter. Prevention is your protection. Get immunized.
