SAINT FRANCIS

PAW PRINT It is exciting that it is already the end of June and we are preparing for the 2016-2017 school year. Many of our students have finished, or are in the final stages of preparing for the last of their exams. We are appreciative of their hard work and for enriching the school community with their many gifts and talents. This has been a wonderful year and as a community we have much to celebrate. Our students have proven themselves to be outstanding Saint Francis ambassadors and we have had the good fortune to enjoy their success in the areas of leadership, academics, athletics and the arts. We are privileged to have a dedicated and hardworking staff who share so much of themselves in supporting the success of all students. It is with mixed emotion that we bid farewell to a number of staff members who will be retiring or moving on to new endeavors. We congratulate Vice Principal retirees Gary Daigle and Janet Herrem. We will surely miss their outstanding leadership and amazing work ethic. Many students will be sadden by the retirement of the dynamic chemistry duo of Peter Lawrence and Clarence MacDonald. Unfortunately, Saint Francis will be losing close to 60 years in combined teaching experience in the field of chemistry. Counsellor Sharon Hudson is also looking forward to retiring. She has supported and advocated for a great number of students over her long career at Saint Francis. Jerry Filip our night caretaker is leaving us after close to 30 years of service. Jerry has done an exceptional job leading the night caretaking team in their care of the school. Finally, we express our deepest gratitude to the following staff members who will be moving on to other work assignments; Counsellor - Pia Foss, Diverse Learning Coordinating Teacher - Shannon Cormier, Constable - Ron Kubicek, Teachers - AnneClaire Chevallier, Carina Crescenzi, Nadine Hindemith, Michelle Hoogveld, Peter Walker and Chris Willott, Educational Assistants - Debbie Luterbach, Ashley Stappler and Julie Wiebe.

A key factor in supporting the success of students is a strong partnership between home and school. I thank parents for their continued support and involvement. Our School Council and parent volunteers have done a terrific job assisting with many school events and activities. We are fortunate to have a caring and dedicated group of parents willing to share their talents and time. This year 482 students participated in our convocation ceremonies. The staff at Saint Francis High School extends our congratulations to the graduates and wish them success in their future endeavors. You have blessed us with your humour, commitment to learning, and your leadership. Continue to live by the values of our patron saint, St. Francis. God bless you as you take on the opportunities of tomorrow and work with others to bring peace and joy into our world. Best wishes from the entire staff at Saint Francis for a safe and rejuvenating summer break . Sincerely, Mark Berger Principal

GOOD AFTERNOON It is an honor to be standing here on this special day and I’d like to welcome all faculty, family, friends, honored guests, alumni, and of course, THE greatest graduating class Saint Francis will ever have. (No offense alumni). I’d also like to thank all the people that contributed in me standing here today. Shout-out to my dad, (hi dad), for showing me what it really means to work hard. And thanks mom, for all your love and patience throughout the years. I’d like to thank my brothers for 1: missing school to be here today and 2: teaching my patience. And of course, big thank you to all my friends, for always being there for me. You know who you are. Now graduates, I know many of you, but there are some who I am graduating with that I don’t know at all, so hi, I’m Selma. We went to high school together. We walked the same hallways, cheered in the same crowds, we may have even sat near one another for an entire semester. And now today, here we are sitting together as the Saint Francis Class of 2016. Emily Dickinson once said, “Forever is composed of Nows.” Ever since I was little, my mom used to repeatedly tell me to live in the moment and to enjoy it. She told me that nothing lasts, but in these moments we are building the most priceless of things—the memories. After years of eye-rolling, and thinking that’s SO cliché, I have realized that my mother is right. She’s always right. It’s all about the memories. I’ve learned that one of the most underestimated things is how precious the current moment is. We don’t normally realize that we are making memories. And so what will we remember at our years at Saint Francis? Walking in Orientation day, shoved into the main foyer all awkward and shoulder to shoulder. Nervous. Excited. We will remember being frustrated the first few weeks getting lost in the North, South, A B C D hallways. We will remember getting nervous in gym class when we were told we were running the dreaded golf course, and we will remember learning to studying real hard (often the period before). We’ll remember getting all dressed up for Brown’s ball and learning that school dances aren’t as they look

in the movies, and that we walked out looking like we came out of a sauna. Looking back, we will remember many world events that took place during our high school years. We will reminisce about the winter Olympics and remember our classes being interrupted with cheering each time our hockey team scored. We witnessed a lot of scary events take place as well, such as the spread of Ebola, the rise of ISIS, and Donald Trump running for president. It also was so very heartwarming to watch Canada welcome 25,000 Syrian refugees this year. Looking back, we will remember engaging in viral fads on social media, from dumping cold water on our heads in the ALS ice bucket challenge, to arguing over the color of a dress (its white and gold by the way), to fan-girling over the grand reappearance of Justin Bieber. Speaking of social media, our time, parents and grandparents, is much different that yours. We are the social media generation. Guys don’t talk to girls through corded Rotary telephones but “slide into their DMs.” And we aren’t asked to movie drive-ins, but rather to “Netflix and chill.” In our time, it’s Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat that carry the stress of having to be updated daily or your existence may be questioned. I mean, I can already forecast hundreds of grad photos, because if you didn’t document graduation on social media, did you actually even graduate? Yes parents, I do admit, we do go overboard sometimes, with photos and updates becoming the primary concern of every outing, but look on the bright side, we can be away from each other for weeks and still know exactly what the other person is doing! You can also thank us for adding some of our vocabulary to the English language. While we were in high school, words including ‘selfie,’ ‘duckface’ and ‘vape,’ were added to the dictionary. We use words such as ‘dope,’ ‘chill’ and ‘goals’ to describe cool things. (‘Saint Francis is pretty chill,’ ‘she is goals.’) Even newer and fresher is the phrase ‘turn up’ which isn’t an expression you’d use when something reappears. If you’re talking to us, it means, “to get loose and be wild.” Oh, and my favorite, ‘lit,’ which is not the past participle of light, but what we use to describe something that’s “fun” or “exciting.” Example: We are “turning up” after grad, it’s going to be so “lit.” (Parents don’t feel too

outdated because I actually had to look some of those up.) It’s really bizarre to think that in about 20 years, much of our world will be mostly run by this generation. But if you look at our graduating class, this amazing group of individuals that Saint Francis has prepared to send out into the world, it’s actually pretty comforting. We’ve been nourished academically, athletically, and spiritually. Be it English, Social, Math or Science we were taught not what but how to think. While our class certainly thrives academically, we also excel in the fine arts and athletics.

true. Love is seen everywhere at our school-you see it in the teachers when they are teaching their students and you see it amongst students in the lifetime friendships and relationships that have been made at our school. But having said all that, I’ll tell you what I think defines us most. Passion and pride. Let me explain. I have never in my life seen as much passion and pride in any school as I have ours. No. I learned that the Browns are no ordinary high school team. Being a Brown is a legacy that began way back in 1962. We have roots and history at our school.

Our music program won countless medals and awards this year, including the Grand Overall Award for Total program in Montreal.

Looking around, I know many of you can say your parents, and even grandparents for some, went to Saint Francis. (Among lots of others, there are so many of you Italians! All these names ending in I’s and E’s and O’s)

Our fine Arts never fail to amaze with their performances-- from the drama performance of the 12 Angry Jurors to musical theatre singing numbers from Hairspray, to the dance show last night.

The various teams we have are more like families, with passion that drives them to 7am practices and keeps them hours after school. We have coaches that were Browns, and are even prouder than their athletes.

Not only did our graduating class sweep numerous City Without mentioning names, there are even those championship titles during our three years, but we also among us who re-watch this year’s football Provincial brought home 2 provincial titles this year alone. Championship game on their weekend mornings. The football team lived up to its “Brown’s” reputation and brought home the school’s 5th Provincial title. (Big sorry goes out to our rivals, ND, we beat you not once, not twice, but three times this year.) And here is something amazing. I don’t know if you know this, but this year our Senior Girls Basketball team brought home the school’s first non-football provincial banner. WAY TO GO SENIOR GIRLS! Here at Saint Francis, we’ve also developed spiritually and grown closer to God. I think it is one of the most beautiful things to see the prayer kept sacred and respected in high school teenage environment. Even amidst the chaos of our Monday mornings, or those awfully stressful moments before our finals and diploma exams, we have been brought to stop, take a step back, and join together in prayer, which has been met with respect by the students, and I think that’s a huge part of Saint Francis. Our school motto is Pax et Caritas, Latin for peace and love, two huge elements that describe the atmosphere and environment at our school. I think the love is what we thrive on. I’ve actually highlighted 1 John 4:8 in religion this semester, which states that “whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” And it’s so

Lastly, we are loud. The term “pep rally” does not do justice at Saint Francis. No, more like concerts where our teams, and of course our Browns boys, are met with students screaming their lungs out and decked out in orange for the spirit days. Yes, we are really loud and competitive. If you are playing Saint Francis at any game, I really feel sorry for you if you’re the other team, we will be louder and brighter. When we are in the bleachers, you can’t fence our pride. So that’s us. In these short three years, we have become THE mighty Browns. Leaving the school in a few weeks doesn’t mean leaving that title behind. Hold on to your pride graduates. We will always have our memories. WE went to Saint Francis High School and WE will always be Browns.

We wish a fond farewell to our retirees of 20152016, Helen Batherson, Gary Daigle, Jerry Filip, Sharon Gerk (no picture) Janet Herrem, Sharon Hudson, Peter Lawrence and Clarence MacDonald. Their years of endless dedication, accomplishments and expertise will be

missed. They have all given tirelessly of their time and have played a part in making Saint Francis a happier and more productive place. We are extremely grateful for the role they have played throughout the years and wish them a happy, healthy retirement. Congratulations!

As the 2015-2016 school year comes to a close we say goodbye and good luck to staff that are moving on. Their time and devotion at Saint Francis will be missed. We wish them all the best!

MARKER SPACE LEARNING COMMONS

Wow, who can believe it is June already! Here are some pictures of the ES ll Class and Ms. Hobor hard at work on our final makerspace of the year. This was a fun project using colored paper to make beautiful mosaic outlines of our names. Here we are having fun and working hard. We have had so much fun this term doing Makerspace in the Learning Commons. Mrs. Hobor spends alot of time preparing materials and getting ideas for us! A huge thank you goes out to her. We are really lucky to have her as our Librarian at Saint Francis and cannot wait until next year to see what she has in store for our ES ll Class!!!

I want to extend much thanks to the council and the Saint Francis parents, staff and community for assisting our collective goals of serving our students for optimal performance in a healthy and vibrant school community grounded in the Catholic faith. This year we focused on the importance of everyone in our school community as special. We made positive action to identify specialness by being present at events, active for our students, and recognizing all the work of our volunteers. It is a very positive impact to guide our community, in what is possible when we give of our precious time for others. An exceptional example to learn from. Thank you to all of you for your time, love and presence. Thank you to the volunteers and council who gave to their school community in these and many other functions.

Two questions were presented to a group of Science 30 students. Below are the results of these questions. A total of 72 students were polled; the following two questions were asked and their responses were kept anonymous. “Did you plan on taking Science 30 when you were in grade 10 or 11?”

7 – yes 65 – no (90% of my current Science 30 students did not plan on taking Science 30 according to their responses) “Now that you have taken science 30 would you recommend it to a current grade 11 student?” (The emphasis was to have each student respond whether or not each grade 11 student needed a 30 level Science to graduate. Was a Science a requirement needed for post-secondary? General response were requested. 66 – yes 6 – no (92% of my current Science 30 students would recommend Science 30 to our grade 11 students according to their responses).

“If at all possible, please try to fill up semester one Science 30 courses so there is room in semester two when students change their minds and elect to take Science 30.” “When students are struggling in Chemistry 30 or Biology 30 and move to Science 30, this generally contributes to overall improved Science 30 marks as well, alleviates some of the unnecessary stress placed on students and teachers in the Chemistry and Biology courses. “ Curtis Stappler Saint Francis Science Department (403) 500-2026 extension 4-376# curtis.stappler@cssd.ab.ca

As another year comes to and end I would like to wish our graduates a fond farewell. The grade twelve retreat, facilitated by Masson Normand, provided the students with an opportunity to take a step away from the stress of exams and their worries about the future. Masson encouraged the students to walk with God and embrace a life filled with meaning and purpose. As Christians we are called to be a witness to Christ in all that we say and do. At our Graduation Mass we were reminded of this in the words of Matthew’s gospel “You are the salt of the earth…You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before others.” Graduates of Saint Francis, may you always be a light in the darkness. May the grace of God fill with you joy and peace. I wish all our graduates many

blessings as they move on to the next chapter of their lives. I hope that all students, parents and teachers have a chance to rest and relax this summer. Celebrate the joys of this past year and move on from the moments that were not so wonderful. Life is full of these ups and downs. Taking time to renew yourself physically, spiritually and mentally is essential to good health. I wish everyone a blessed, safe, and happy summer.

Long warm days... The pace of life slows... A time for picnics and rest in the shade... Lord, help me to rest awhile in the cooling shade of your presence. Slow down my restless heart and fill me with gentle compassion for all your people.

May 12, 2016, saw a fantastic turn out for the annual ES Year End Appreciation Celebration which recognizes and celebrates all of the partners, on and off campus of our Educational Support programs. These are the people who consistently support our students enabling them to acquire the skills and attributes that contribute to student success.

The theme of this year’s celebration, “Where are they now?”, provided an exceptional opportunity to showcase the talents and accomplishments of former graduates of the ES programs at Saint Francis High School. We were able to see pictures and find out about several of our former students. Many of these young adults have gone on to Post-Secondary education at U of C, MRU, and Olds College. In addition these former students find time to volunteer, work part time and travel the world! There certainly is a great deal to celebrate! Ms. Konicki ES l and Ms. Reece ES ll are so proud of their former students and look forward to inviting and celebrating future graduates of the ES Programs.

JUNIOR GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY

This year our team was entirely made up of grade 10’s and most had never played field hockey before. The girls were amazing. They were full of spirit and wanted to learn a new sport. Going into finals they were undefeated. They went to cities and it was

a tough game. End of the game it was tied 0-0. Then went into two 7.5 min OT halves. Still 0-0. Went into a best of 5 shootout and they lost 2-1. It was heartbreaking, but as a coach and a school community we could not be prouder of our Browns.

Ms. Sarah Scarpino Coach

The Senior Girls Field Hockey Team put forth a good effort over all in a season that saw a lot of offensive challenges and tough competition. We had a wide range of skill levels this year from returning players to those who had never picked up a stick. Although the season did not turn out as we hoped, I saw a ton of growth both as a

team and individually. The girls surpassed my expectation of them with the determination and heart they portrayed. As a coach, this is everything that I ask for and could not be more pleased with the group of young ladies who represented St. Francis High School on the field.

The 2016 Track and Field season finished with a bang this year, building on the successes from the 2015 season. With an impressive showing at the Dino Track and Field Meets, we were able to take 70 athletes to the Divisional Meet. After a long, hard battle with both the weather and other incredible athletes, over 25 of our very own placed in the top 6 of their respective events, giving them an opportunity to represent Saint Francis at the City Championship Meet. From there, Reyna Crawford, Bjorn Savoie and Liam Milligan placed in the top two of their respective events giving themselves an opportunity to compete at the Provincial Meet in Edmonton. In the end, Bjorn Savoie placed third in high jump completing an otherwise amazing season of

growth and accomplishment for him. With this, we are looking forward to a great season next year, one filled with excitement, development and results. All of this could not have been done without the amazing dedication of our coaches and volunteers: Peter Lawrence, Wayne Meadows, Don Marchuk, David Dziadyk, Francois Cousin, Michael Huggins, Matt Schaffer, Mariano Ezeta and Justin Sinclair.

Thank you and see you on the track!!!

Mr. Jason Villeneuve Coach

After a tough “no win 2015 season, the Senior Girls Rugby team bounced back with three wins in league play. This was good enough to put us into the Division Two playoffs where we lost to Centennial High School in the first round. Although out early, the girls showed consistent improvement throughout the year and we managed to finish much higher than anyone expected. We were a young team this year, and moving forward our battle tested veterans will

help us to keep building and improving the girls rugby program. The team and coaches are looking forward to next year, and showing the Brown faithful what we can really do.
