JUNE EDITION 2016-17
SAINT FRANCIS
The administration and staff of Saint Francis High School wish our students every success on their exams and we extend our appreciation for their hard work and enriching our school community with their many gifts and talents. Over the school year our students have proven to be great ambassadors for the school community and have made many positive contributions in academics, athletics and the arts. We look forward to another outstanding year as we welcome our new Grade 10’s into our community. Now that the awards celebrations, playoffs, Fine Arts productions and graduation are over we are preparing for the modernization project which will begin in July. The district has hired the contractor and we are working closely with Construction and Maintenance to ensure the building is available and ready to go. During the final weeks of June our offices were relocated to our temporary location, the small weight room, N118. During the first phase of the modernization the area north of the Brown Gym will be vacated to allow the construction to proceed. A brochure about the modernization will be included in the August mail out. We are excited for the many upgrades and improvements to begin. We thank and recognize a number of staff who will be retiring or moving to other assignments next year. We have been blessed to have such a dedicated and hardworking staff who are willing to share so much of themselves to support the success of our students. Congratulations to Vice Principal Gloria Conzon, teachers Monique Byrne, Frances Donnachie, Victoria May and Administrative Secretary Cheryl McPhail for their dedication to the district over their careers. We wish them all the best as they move into retirement. We also say goodbye and extend our gratitude to Brigida Battistessa, Stephanie MacLean, Lisa O’Brien and Hayley Toth who are on leave next year; and to Melanie Clark, Donna Christopher, Marsha Gallant, Heather McGowan and Maureen Spence who will be moving to other assignments. The strong partnership between home and school has been a key factor in supporting the success of students. I thank parents for their continued support and involvement. Our School Council and parent volunteers have done an outstanding job supporting a great number of school events and activities. We are fortunate to have such a caring and dedicated group of parents willing to share their talents and time. This year 575 students participated in our convocation ceremonies. The school community wishes our graduates every success in their future endeavors. You have blessed us with your humour, commitment to learning and your leadership. Continue to live by the values of our patron saint, St. Francis. May God watch over and guide you as you face the challenges of tomorrow and work with others to bring peace and joy into our world. Best wishes for a safe and rejuvenating summer from the entire staff at Saint Francis. We hope you enjoy the Spring edition of our newsletter. Sincerely, Mark Berger, Principal

Our patron saint, St Francis, taught us to "Preach the gospel everywhere and if necessary use words". Council, staff and volunteers gave of their precious time to support our school, student achievement and activities with love. Thanks and words are not enough, but sincere appreciation is due to all who gave of their time and heart to make our school the special place it is. We saw what can be achieved when council and the principal work together as a team to improve outcomes. We congratulate Mrs. Claude Chretien as our incoming School Council Chair. Please consider coming forward to join or support her new council team to work with Mr. Berger during these important upcoming years with curriculum redesign, initiatives, challenges and our major renovation.
I want to thank Mr. Nania for an entertaining and poignant toast to the graduates at the graduation banquet and his roles in our council. As an alumni and great supporter of the school and the community, he has continued to inspire us to learn from the past, embrace the present and look to the future with excitement. I want to thank council members, Mrs. Olafson, Mrs. Dube, Mrs. Hader, Mrs. Chretien, Mrs.Paviglianiti, Mrs.Vandervoort and Mrs.Rath, for their hard work and dedication to our school over the last three years. Without them and our volunteers, we would not have achieved the things we did. It seems like it all came together easily but was actually a coordinated effort of hard work and caring. The heart of volunteers in Stewardship, for a purpose beyond self, is very rewarding and opens our minds to possibilities and joy that cannot be found elsewhere. Some believe it's a necessary and special gift that society and communities require to thrive. I wish the very best to all our volunteers, Mr.Berger and the staff. I am thankful for a wonderful three years together. I am fortunate for the quality time we spent together, and I will remember each of you for your valuable contributions. With love and gratitude, John Volponi, School Council Chair
Our annual Talent Show showcased a wide range of talent in our school. We saw a hand balancing act, talented musicians, and strong vocalists. One act even performed an original song this year. Student Council would like to thank everyone who came out to see the Talent Show, the judges for their participation, and everyone who helped behind the scenes. We would especially like to thank the students who auditioned, the contestants who performed, and the Musical Theatre Class who showcased Crime of a Century, one of their numbers from their production. The winner of this year’s Talent Show was Ava C. On a Tri-Hand Balancing Stand, she demonstrated strength, agility and flexibility. The Second Place winner was Jeziah A. for the second year in a row. She sang a beautiful rendition of Cheating on Me while playing keyboards. Third Place was awarded to The Flying Shingles. This Jazz Combo consisting of Russell G., Kyla A., Anthony G., Justin K., Ethan T., Frank B., Dylan V. and Jacob S. performed Moanin which featured several instrumental solos. Three acts received Honourable Mentions: Sofia D. for her wonderful performance of I Dreamed a Dream. Hannah F. and Adriana B. for their duet “Superficial Love” and Heeju J. for her performance of “Secret” on keyboards. Saint Francis is proud of all the talented individuals in our community. Thanks to everyone for making this year’s Talent Show one that expressed our school spirit and a strong sense of community. Student Council

Congratulations Cherish Yesterday; Live Today; Reach for Tomorrow.
Sending out a special thank you to all the parent volunteers who came to help with the Staff Appreciation Luncheon. We would also like to thank the parents who sent in gifts for door prizes, most of the staff went home with a little something, and also for the wonderful salads and desserts! I cannot say thank you enough—this event would not be so successful without the help and generousity of so many. Thank you to Panda Flowers in Crowfoot for donating the beautiful flowers for the tables and for the five gorgeous bouquets that we presented to each of the retirees from school council. We wish Ms. Donnachie, Ms. Conzon, Ms. May, Ms. Byrne and Ms. McPhail happy and healthy retirement, best wishes in all future endeavours. Thank you to David's Tea and Starbucks for donating the tea and coffee and Riverstone Pub for catering an amazing meal. Wishing all the staff and students of Saint Francis safe travels over the summer. At this time I would love to take a moment to thank some wonderful parent volunteers who will be finishing their school volunteer positions. I have had the pleasure of volunteering with some of you at a few different schools in my 12 years in Calgary! I will not mention names as there are many and I do not want to miss anyone. Best wishes to you all and congratulations on getting all the young ones graduated! Staff Appreciation Luncheon Coordinator, Dawn Le Feuvre

Frances Donnachie has been teaching for 32 years. In the early years, she taught elementary at St. Joseph and St. Alphonsus, and junior high math at St. Alphonsus and St. Michael before she found her home at Saint Francis and 18 years of teaching bliss. She is deeply rooted in her faith and devoted to her family. A loyal friend, a dedicated colleague, and a hard-working and compassionate teacher who will be dearly missed. “Once a Brown always a Brown!”
Victoria May taught for 22 years beginning with Brebeuf, then Bishop McNally, and finally moving to Saint Francis in 1999. She coached the Senior Girls Volleyball team, and both Junior and Senior Boys Volleyball teams earning a City Championship with the Junior Boys team. Her passion was working with “diverse learners” and establishing positive relationships with students. She was honoured when one of her students named his first born daughter after her. She will be remembered for her courage for frequently taking her Science 24 students into the lab.
Congratulations to Mrs. Monique Byrne for 32 years of exceptional service to our most vulnerable students. Throughout her career she has enabled student growth from the inside out, working tirelessly to promote their strengths while minimizing their many and varied challenges. It sounds cliché to say but she really did go the extra mile. In fact, she undoubtedly ran marathons uncounted for her students. Most people don’t know the depth of her dedication, whether it was supplying food and clothing or visiting students at the hospital. Her compassion is unsurpassed. If she was a sculptor she would have rivaled Michelangelo.
Mrs. Byrne will be greatly missed at Saint Francis. We wish her the best in her retirement!
Mrs. Gloria Conzon, Vice Principal, is retiring at the end of the school year. She began her career as a senior high mathematics teacher. Gloria has worked in many different schools and she also served as the district’s senior high mathematics consultant. We will miss her outstanding analytical and spatial abilities which came in very handy as our school’s scheduler. Over the course of these past few years Gloria has worked closely with our district architects and she has made significant contributions to the design of the Saint Francis modernization. Gloria will be missed for her thoughtfulness, deep reflections, and love and care for our students. Gloria is looking forward to spending more time with her family and friends. Best wishes in your retirement Gloria.
Mrs. Cheryl McPhail has been Administrative Secretary at Saint Francis for the past 15 years. She has contributed greatly to the school’s climate and culture and she has played a critical role in supporting teachers, administrators and students. Cheryl will be missed for her dedication and her great ability to form lasting and wonderful relationships with others. We are going to also miss her warm and friendly demeanor. Cheryl looks forward to spending more time with her family and grandchildren. We wish her all the best in her retirement.

Once again the Track and Field season has come to an end. We started our season by taking a small team of 24 Saint Francis athletes for the first time to Kamloops, BC to compete in the Battle of the Border Track and Field Meet. This was an amazing event to be a part of and an excellent opportunity for our track and field athletes to compete out of
province. This year we also had over 110 athletes competing in the Dino’s Meet, with 75 moving on to the Divisional Meet. We had 36 student-athletes compete in the City Championship, with seven amazing athletes representing Saint Francis at the Provincial Competition in Edmonton. Some great results came out of it with a few top 5 finishers and our best – Bjorn S. placing 3rd in High Jump with a leap of 1.87m (over 6 feet!). The success of these athletes could not be made possible without the dedication and commitment of our coaches – Mr. Dziadyk, Mr. Cousin, Mr. Meadows, Mrs. McGowan, Mrs. Clarke, Mr. Marchuk and Mr. Huggins. Thank you so much for all the time that you invested this season and here’s looking forward to another great year next year!

Browns Win, Browns Win, Browns win!!! The Senior Girls Rugby team finished off a perfect season, 9-0 beating Sir Winston Churchill in the Division 2 City final by a score of 12-10. The team fought through three yellow cards, and with a monstrous convert kick by Katie B. into a 30 km wind from the 5 meter line we were victorious. Overall, the girls had an extremely successful season. Our senior team finished in second place at the Clearwater Cup Sevens tournament, losing to Bellerose 10-0. Our junior girls won all four games at the Sevens jamboree held at Father Lacombe school. We are graduating 14 Grade 12 girls this year. Ceilidh F., Kirsten M., Katie B., Laura P., Isabella J., Chantal L., Lauren C., Sierra J., Adesua E., Ana C., Sharolyn M., Jenna W., Felicia R. and Fern R. We wish them the best of luck as they enter the next phase of their lives. A couple of our Grade 12 players are in contact with the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta to continue their rugby careers. Moving forward to next year, we are hoping to have another strong year. We are going to test our program by moving up to Division 1 rugby and hope our work ethic and strong team play will garner us similar success. We have a strong returning crew of Grade 10 and 11 girls who had the opportunity to gain a ton of experience playing this year. They hope to show their true brown and orange spirit as starters next year.
The coaching staff is looking to do a tour next year to Victoria with the team, and we will be starting early in the year with a training regime to start the season as strong as possible. If you are interested in playing rugby next year with the senior girls, please see Mr. Villeneuve or Mr. Audia as soon as possible. Coach Villeneuve

What a great run! What a tough finish though!! With a record for wins in a season in the past decade, SFFC17 was a squad rich with talent that scored more than 30 goals in league play. AND we didn’t even have all players available due to injuries…so that provides untapped potential for the future. The team started training months ago and cruised through league play. The squad deservedly played in a bonafide city championship final (1v2) that ended 0-0 after regulation. An awkward play and disputable call in OT meant a late 0-1 loss to Aberhart. SFFC was led by REAL Champions—Jaime M. and Azubike O. We wanted to recognize the mature efforts of two Grade 12 student athletes who showed remarkable courage and support to a grieving player on their soccer team. They showed incredible leadership and truly demonstrated team members act as family. With sport comes pressure to perform and we had a Grade 10 student Sebastian S. who did just that. Due to injury, Seb filled in as goalie halfway through the year and shut the door on teams. In extra time of the final,.Seb made what may be one of the most amazing saves in almost 40 years of soccer. Yet the officials claimed an infraction occurred (even if the video shows he didn’t). So, we were ‘robbed’ of a city championship this season in our final game. On the video replay you feel a myriad of emotions within a few moments...from tension before the kick, to jubilation after save, to visible dejection and despair. At that moment Jaime and Azubike stepped up. They consoled and comforted Seb over the remainder of game and for the next few hours…reaching out to check that he was okay. They were instrumental in encouraging and reassuring him that he was not to blame. They rallied teammates and called Seb back to school to recognize and honour what an important contribution he made to the team. For graduating Grade 12s, Jaime and Azubike put their own emotions (and defeat) aside to put their teammate first. That is a demonstration of how sport can offer true life lessons. Coaches were very proud and impressed by their actions. Award winners 2017 Awards in team sports are always a challenge but coaches do feel that recognition is meant to inspire. We tip our hats to these leaders:
Golden Boot (most goals) Jeff S.; TOP Award (best offensive players) Ben M./Zachary M.; Defensive Award Azubike O.; Captain and SFFC17 Most Valuable Player Matteo P. Good luck to all Grade12s who now join the exclusive SFFC Alumni team. Again we have developed players moving on to the next level! Coaches were impressed by the desire to bring on the new redshirts into the fold, ensuring they learned what it meant to represent ‘being a Brown’. SFFC18 seek more success next year! Coaches Meadows and Oliverio
This year’s Junior Girls Field Hockey team was made up of 22 amazing players, a great mix of Grade 10 and 11 girls. The best part of the season was watching many players who had never played the sport come away with a love for a new sport. The team made it to City Finals Division 2 and played an outstanding game, but lost to Bishop Carroll 1-0. Great effort Browns! Coach Gabel
Grade eleven musical theatre has been the most memorable year of high school. I have experienced so many “firsts” that my teachers and peers have pushed me to obtain. For some people, it is simple to magnetize themselves to a department where they can sculpt and cultivate their interests passionately. Coming into high school, I had no expectation of generating this devotion and admiration towards something that was completely out of my element—musical theatre. Being raised in a household that encouraged R&B, hip hop and pop music made me so nervous to start a class that enforces such a different environment. Walking into class on the first day, there were so many people to take notice of, some of whom were in the same boat as me in having no experience while others knew every line, intricate pitch and harmony from several musicals. Halfway through the semester, students were expected to use all of their progressive talent using ingenuity to choreograph, sing and plot a scene from a specific musical that the drama teachers had chosen. These creative artworks are called contract pieces in which students audition. Our amazing musical theatre teachers and professionals would decipher and measure each piece to use in our performances with suggestions for improvement. This year, the musicals chosen to perform were Gypsy, Ragtime, Something Rotten and The Lion King. All grade ten, eleven and twelve students performed together on stage. I was very lucky to have some of my contract pieces get into the show and to work with my best friends.
During rehearsal and performing week, all of us shared laughs in the void of nervousness, hoping that the audience would feel the experiences we had in creating the show—joy and exhilaration. I had to learn to adapt to an environment that required me to break out of my shell, I found myself enjoying the program. From acting, learning choreography, reading music and harmonizing, to everything coming together and placed under a spotlight, we all found ourselves lost in taking on a role and owning it. After every show, we always received copious amounts of positive feedback, which in turn is rewarding for all of us since it comes to show that hard work truly pays off. Reaching out to an audience that can feel the rollercoaster of emotions that we felt performing is so satisfying. There is so much work that not only students dedicate themselves to, but the teachers and professional performers who take time to work with us individually is incredible. They not only grant us wishes in bettering ourselves as performers, but as students. They make everyday a new challenge and students are determined to showcase their capabilities in any way possible. It is all done through both the teachers and students that nurture an optimistic environment and tend to a process: an inevitable simple circle of life where each of us experience our ups and downs together knowing that there will always be someone to turn to who can pick us up and help us grow.
