FALL EDITION 2020-2021

The Social Justice Club created the Gratitude Tree to give students and staff an opportunity to reflect and express upon what really matters in their lives! Everyone was encouraged to write down something they are most grateful for on cut out leaves and hang them on the Gratitude Tree in the Gathering Area by the Main Office.

SAINT FRANCIS Dear Saint Francis Families, To begin, I would like to acknowledge the incredible work our teachers, support staff, and custodial team have done to provide a safe learning environment for our students. Our students and families have also made great efforts to follow the provincial health guidelines. Although COVID-19 infection rates are rising, our school continues to be safe for students and staff. In response to the provincial government’s return to school plan, we implemented a quarter system. Now, with the start of quarter two underway, we can reflect on our first quarter results. Unfortunately, we had several positive cases of COVID-19 that forced large numbers of staff and students into self-isolation. The number of people having to self-isolate was cut in half because of the quarter system. We were fortunate to have been able to fill all staff vacancies with guest teachers, and classes were able to continue for those students who remained in class. For the most part, students have adapted to the 140-minute classes and the quick pace of the quarter schedule. Students are focused and diligently working on their studies. The number of students having unexcused absences and those wandering the halls, has dramatically reduced. However, the quarter system has not been ideal for all students. Recognizing this, we have become more creative in finding ways to support students. For example, we implemented; “write to improve”, alternative assignments, extended deadlines and holding courses open to allow students to finish successfully. Our latest reported case of COVID-19 was on November 17. Therefore, barring any additional cases, we anticipate that all staff and students will be in school before the end of November. Alberta Health Services (A.H.S.) has been overwhelmed by contact tracing, leaving some families and staff wondering when their isolations will end. We thank our families for their patience and understanding and we want you to know that we are doing our very best to keep everyone informed in a timely manner. Your support has been incredible, and we appreciate all the kind emails and words of encouragement. This past week, the provincial government implemented further COVID-19 restrictions. These targeted public health measures will impact extracurricular programs at Saint Francis. Effective Monday, November 16, the following district recommendations will take effect and will be re-evaluated on November 27, to determine further direction: • • • • •

Non-curricular activities that happen outside of instructional time are suspended. Physical activity that occurs during instructional time is not considered extra-curricular and will be allowed to continue under our subject specific guidelines. Extracurricular sport teams are suspended. In-person group performance activities that happen outside of instructional time are suspended. This includes singing, dancing, and theatre. Individual online rehearsals i.e. zoom rehearsals, may continue at the discretion of the principal. Fitness areas and gyms will be open for instructional use only and will close outside of instructional hours.

Planning for Upcoming School Events Preliminary work is already underway for hosting school events virtually. These include the Special Programs Nights (International Spanish Academy, Extended French, and Advanced Placement) Nov. 24 & 26; Christmas Music Concert Dec. 9; Open House Feb. 9; Graduation May 28 & 30; and Awards Ceremony June 8. If A.H.S. restrictions continue into June, we will create another Graduation event for our student. Although we hope for a traditional graduation ceremony, we are confident that students will be appropriately recognized given the positive feedback we received from last year’s graduates. Finally, the Advanced Acting show ‘Survivor Island’ DVD’s will be available for $20, simply click Survivor Island DVD Order Form God bless you and may your families remain healthy and safe. Welcome all returning and new families to Saint Francis High School! Our 2020-2021 School Council is excited about the new school year. A great way to stay connected with all the happenings at the school is to attend one of the School Council meetings. Our principal, Mark Berger, attends every council meeting and brings a wealth of information and news to share with the parents. Please consider joining us at our next meeting on Wednesday November 18 at 7:00 p.m. via Microsoft Teams. The link will be sent out in an email before the meeting day. We look forward to meeting you! There is one vacant position on School Council which is that of Secretary. This person records the minutes of all meetings and provides the prepared minutes for approval at the subsequent meeting. We only have five meetings per year, so the time commitment involved is minimal. If you are interested in this position, please contact Mary Pat Senger at stfrancis@schoolcouncil.cssd.ab.ca.

In a normal school year, there are many volunteer projects that parents can assist with at the school. During the pandemic, these special events and projects will only happen if approved by the principal, in coordination with the Calgary Catholic School District. We welcome parents to sign up on the volunteer database for these potential opportunities. By adding your name to the database, you will receive emails of volunteer opportunities at the school. We do not send out mass emails regarding volunteer requests; only those who have signed up will receive the emails about volunteering. You are not committing to anything by signing up. Throughout the year, we may require volunteers for Textbook Distribution, Browns Ball, Athletics, Fundraising, Christmas Hampers, Archives Project, Graduation Events, and the Staff Appreciation Lunch. If you are interested in signing up, please visit the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1E--MAGuDxfz9pa0indQEMpz2c7vETglBNHcN-mkINrk/viewform?edit_requested=true. Please note that we do not rollover the volunteer names from one school year to the next, therefore, you do need to fill in the form every year. Our Council has a few fundraisers planned for the upcoming year. We had a Winter Plant Fundraiser where we sold poinsettias, wreaths, and holiday planters. Thank you to those who purchased their winter plants, you will be updated soon regarding pick up on November 27. We will then have our Spring Plant Fundraiser where we will sell beautiful, locally grown plants to help raise money in support of School Council initiatives, such as enhancements to our Learning Commons and the annual year-end luncheon to thank our wonderful staff at Saint Francis. Plants are a great way to encourage our friends and family to get out into the garden while supporting our school. Look out for the plant order forms in early April. We will also be hosting several Papa John’s Pizza Nights throughout the school year. When you order online from the Arbour Lake, Panorama, and Motel Village locations on these days, you will receive 15% off your regular-priced order and Papa John’s will donate 15% to Saint Francis. Just use the promo code STF 15 at the start of your order. What a great excuse to not cook on these nights! Feel free to share the promo code with your friends and family. The dates scheduled this school year are December 17, March 18, and May 20. Another easy way to support the school is to buy from Cob’s Bread in Crowfoot. Cob’s donates 5% of every purchase made back to our school. When you make a purchase, just let them know you want the purchase credited to Saint Francis and that sale will be added to the school’s account. We look forward to a rewarding school year. If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please feel free to reach out to us at stfrancis@schoolcouncil.cssd.ab.ca. Calgary Catholic Education Foundation Inaugural Telethon COVID19 has disrupted our lives. From pivoting to working and learning from home, how we do groceries, attend mass or participate in meetings. All of our lives have changed. The Calgary Catholic Education Foundation was also impacted with a limited ability to fundraise for its mission: to provide enhanced learning opportunities for the 118 schools and 59,000 students of the Calgary Catholic Education Foundation. Every year, the CCEF raises money to put back into the classrooms and schools, providing: •

technology needs such as Chromebooks® and LOFT TVs,

education support materials such as learning aids for students,

grow towers for schools to grow vegetables that can be eaten at lunchtime,

school pantries so that students do not face food insecurity

or even the opportunity to bring a school-wide activity such as Trickster Theatre or Campus Calgary/Open Minds® field trips.

The CCEF’s largest annual appeal occurs yearly on Catholic Education Sunday (November 8, 2020). This event involves 45 parishes, 161 mass times in 15 languages. It is a testament to the gift of Catholic education we have here in Alberta. The Diocese of Calgary expressed concern for this major local fundraiser due to COVID19 and approached the CCEF to be innovative. Join hosts Michael Chiasson of Access52 and Linda Olsen of Global News on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, from 7-9 pm for the inaugural Calgary Catholic Education Telethon Livestream from Bishop O’Byrne High School www.theccef.ca and on the CCEF’s Facebook page. Join us as we celebrate Catholic education in Calgary and hear stories from our schools, messages of support from alumni such as Tony Spoletini and Marco Ianuzzi, fireside chats with Bishop McGrattan, and so much more! Our goal is to raise $125,000 to impact over 60,000 students from kindergarten to post-secondary within two school districts and two postsecondary institutions. Our gift of Catholic education is one that we must cherish and support within our 300,000 strong Catholic community right here in Calgary. Change a local child’s potential today. Donate local. Impact local. #IBelieveinCatholicED Join us on November 17, 2020, from 7-9 pm MT live-streamed at www.theccef.ca

Saint Francis took part in Orange Shirt Day, recognizing the dignity of the child and to commemorate Residential School survivors in the spirit of reconciliation. The community were encouraged to wear an orange shirt, and if not, were provided with an orange ribbon. As a community we reflected on orange shirt cut outs why every child matters. Please view the links as Indigenous Club members reveal personal stories of what Orange Shirt Days means to them.

Our ES ll class went out one beautiful day in October to capture some of the spectacular Fall colors. Here are some of the photos our students took, enjoy!

Our district faith theme this year comes from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians on Love – “…and now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 13:13) All of these are fundamental to our beliefs as Christians and this year the focus is on faith. In faith we trust that God will get us through the difficult times. This is not easy, especially when it seems that every time we turn on the TV or read a newspaper, it is always bad news. That is the reality that we are presented with, the reality that we can see and feel and hear. Faith is accepting a reality that we can’t yet see. Faith teaches us that this too shall pass, that good things are still to come, even though we may have a hard time believing that right now. Faith is a gift from the Holy Spirit, and like all gifts, needs to be cherished and nurtured. When we allow our faith to grow, the obstacles that we face don’t seem as big and we have confidence in being able to overcome them. This year let us pray for faith so that we may feel hopeful that our world and all the suffering will get better. Let us pray for a safe school year and for all the needs of everyone in our school community.

Our Lent project last year was collecting purses and personal care products for Purses of Hope. This organization gives women living on the streets or in shelters purses filled with a variety of care items. Even though our project was interrupted by COVID, the school community was able to collect over a hundred purses and a huge variety of toiletries and care items. It is wonderful to see such support from our school community and Purses of Hope can use them in their upcoming fall campaign.

Lambda Club is a Catholic inclusive community of love that welcomes individuals to be who they are. We believe in tolerance, respect, and security for all, including the LGBTQ+ community. We meet in N208 at lunch on Thursdays to chat and plan activities. In Quarter 1, our club enjoyed painting pumpkins with fun, positive designs, as well as raising awareness about Gender Equality Week and International Pronoun Day. Everyone is welcome! Please see Mr. Le Marquand for more information.

Student Council would like to welcome all students, teachers, staff, and parents of our Saint Francis Community. We are so glad to be back in school. This year our welcoming theme is “Discover Your Path.” We are asking all Browns to discover their own path while social distancing. As the grade 10’s begin their high school journey, we urge them to work hard, be optimistic and open minded. As the Grade 11’s, continue their high school journey, we ask that they show responsibility and encourage them to do their best, by keeping up their schoolwork and demonstrating their school spirit daily. As the Grade 12’s enter their final year of high school, we encourage them to be leaders and ambassadors. Together, as members of the Saint Francis Community, we invite everyone to get involved as much as possible! Join Student Council or any of our clubs. Be a great Browns fan by showing your School Spirit through participation, remembering to wear your mask and to follow socially distancing.

School is very different this year, yet our school spirt is very strong. We are very happy and relieved to be able to gather as a school community within the school walls. Student Council’s first planned activity was to honor our Patron Saint, St. Francis, for his Feast Day. St. Francis great affinity towards nature was demonstrated through his treatment of animals and his song “Canticle of the Sun”. Our school colors represent him and his love of nature. Brown represents the tunic Franciscans wear which also demonstrates their commitment to protect the earth and nature. Orange represents the sun which St. Francis felt symbolized the Creator’s divine light and intensifies natural life. Students were asked to dress in our school colors for the Feast day of St. Francis. Many participated and it was fun to see such school spirit. In keeping with the need to socially distance, Student Council held a Spirit Week in the middle of October. We challenged students to demonstrate their school spirit by dressing up each day of the week following a different theme. Monday, October 19th, students proudly wore their favorite jersey showing team pride. Tuesday, our school showed their true colours through the rainbow of tie-dies shirts that some claimed had been created during last year’s school quarantine. Wednesday, we needed to wear our shades as we journeyed back to the days of neon. Thursday students rose to the challenge and donned their favorite superhero, TV show, literary character outfit as they dressed up for Character Day. We finished the week by dressing up for Fancy Friday, students dressed to impress, showing off their fashion style.

September is always a busy month for Student Services and this year was no exception as we switched to the quarter system to more safely cohort students. Our online scheduling system allowed us to handle almost double the usual requests. resulted in many more students coming back to satisfactory timetables. Students have been reminded to set up their MyPass accounts if they have not already done so. Alberta Education requires all students have a myPass account to view and order transcripts and access diploma exam results.

Once again, Students Services is offering twitter to students and parents. Our twitter feed is @SFGuidanceCCSD. Students and parents may also access post -secondary and scholarship information in their D2L course labelled “General Course Student Services” under content. Saint Francis will be hosting a semi-virtual post secondary fair during the school day and during tutorials on November 18th and 19th. Students will be able to sign up for a zoom with prospective students and speak directly to reps from different universities.

Career planning – What would you like to do after high school? Self Assessment – Interests, Skills, Values and Personality Occupational Research Job Search - Resumes, Cover Letters and Interview Writing Post Secondary Exploration Volunteer Opportunities

What is Career Planning? Career planning is a unique life long process for each person. Your Career Practitioner will work with you to learn more about how your interests, skills, values and personality impact your choice of career direction. It is an active process that students begin in their Career and Life Management class and continues with meetings with your Career Practitioner and your Student Services counselor. You will be making career decisions throughout your life. Does the Career Centre offer Career Tests and Assessments? Any “career tests” are tools for students to learn more about themselves and potential careers that may be of interest to them. The “tests” are designed to provide career suggestions for exploration but there is no test that will tell a student what they should have as a career. The goal is for the students to learn as much as they can about themselves and the careers that are available so they themselves can make an informed decision about their first step after high school.

Will the Career Centre find me a job? We do everything we can to give students the tools to find their own jobs. That may mean assisting students with creating a resume and cover letter, doing practice job interviews and talking about job-search skills. Can I get High School credits for my part-time job or volunteer work? Yes, you can! We live in a different world nowadays; where facetiming friends, physical distancing and isolation has become the norm. For me, my entire life revolves around the physical contact and community of theatre and arts communities, many of which have been shut down due to the financial strains of the pandemic. Nothing this year has made me happier than the drama program at Saint Francis. We continue to find ways to spread theatre magic, from behind masks, 6ft away and behind the smell of bleached seats. With following AHS guidelines and shortened semesters, the Advanced Acting class has already managed to block, memorize, and create an entire show from scratch. Most plays I’ve been a part of have taken at least three months to create an already existing piece of theatre, but this class managed to create something completely original in only 8 weeks. Not only that, the improv club has found a way to still meet every Tuesday and Thursday to learn about improvised acting; spontaneous acting without a script. In the next coming weeks, another project is starting up rehearsals; Romeo and Juliet. This beloved classic has the entire drama department ready to once again build a show; no matter what the world decides to throw our way. As the world continues to change, we are ready to adapt and evolve. Afterall, theatre is about the communities and families that we build through the arts. Living through a pandemic has thrown many challenges our way, but there is no place I would rather be, than with my family in the drama department, creating the little moments of magic I need everyday.
