SAINT FRANCIS

The school year is off to a great start and this year we have an enrolment of 1644 students. We welcome our new grade 10’s to the 2016-2017 school year, as well as our new grade 11 and 12’s. This year will be a very interesting and exciting year for the Saint Francis school community with modernization set to begin in Semester II. The district planning and construction department and Saint Francis staff have been busy reviewing design plans for the project. Once the plans are finalized and contractors are hired we will know more about the project’s timeline, scope and sequence. We anticipate and hope that some of this information will become available in time for our December newsletter. During the opening address to students, we focused on what it means to be a Brown. We are fortunate to be part of a school community blessed with a long history that is rich in tradition. We also focused on our faith theme of Mercy and how the Peace Prayer of Saint Francis promotes love, kindness and the virtues of mercy and forgiveness. Students were informed of the support the school community provides to ensure their success. We continue to encourage our students to engage in their school community by moving outside their areas of comfort and extending love and kindness to each other. Students were called upon to foster a school culture of effort by working together to raise expectations and prepare for success after high school. We are in the process of reviewing our Diploma and Accountability Pillar results and our October 7 Professional Development Day will be dedicated to facilitate this process. At first glance, results are very positive and our school community has much to celebrate. Our school’s Three Year Goals and Annual Educational Results Report (AERR) will be published to our website in mid-November. This information will be presented in detail at our next School Council meeting which

will be held on Tuesday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m. We invite our parents to come out and join our council. We have a core of parents who have been with the council for many years and we are always looking for new parents to participate. Our next meeting will also revisit the current moratorium on international travel. Students celebrated Spirit Week from October 11-14. Many events were planned throughout the week cumulating in the Student Council’s sponsored Pep Rally event. The event showcased our school’s talented dancers and athletes and raised monies to support a few of this year’s works of mercy charity drives. Our Fine Arts department is showcasing “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”. The play will run November 29, 30, December 5, 6 and 7, with the Gala taking place on December 1. The Gala event is a great opportunity to see students showcase their artistic talents in music, drama, dance, culinary and art. Our fall sports activities began on the first day of classes and are now in full swing. Fall sports include: junior and senior volleyball teams, junior and senior football, swim team, girls soccer and cross-country. So far we have experienced great success at all levels and in all sports. Student interest in athletics has been outstanding. This year more than sixty students have joined the Brown’s swimming team. Students are advised to watch our website and foyer monitor for event times. As part of the annual Saint Francis Feast Day tradition, four individuals were inducted onto the Wall of Distinction. Our guests shared their stories and also provided our graduates with some parting words of wisdom and hope. Inducted to the Wall of Distinction this year were Mr. Doug Taylor – first principal Saint Francis 19621979, Father Stephen Gattafoni – School Chaplain 1986–2002. Mr. Joe Stambene – Teacher/Coach Class of 1979, Jaye Milley

– world class disabled cyclist, class of 2009. Final Word Saint Francis is a community that is committed to learning excellence. We set high expectations for ourselves and our students. Our staff will deliver outstanding educational programming for your son or daughter to help them achieve their full potentials. To do so, we require the assistance and feedback from all stakeholder groups. Parents are welcome to volunteer their time supporting our many programs and events. Please feel free to contact the school and let us know how we are doing. The Staff of Saint Francis

Mia Dragicevic and Yostina Wanis at Club Day Student Council would like to welcome all new and returning students, teachers, staff and parents of our Saint Francis Community. Student Council is the heart, muscle and soul of the Saint Francis student body. This group of dedicated, hard-working young women and men ensure that there is always something interesting going on at school. Without this essential body, a school day at Saint Francis would just be another ordinary school day. Throughout the school year we are constantly planning special activities and events such as our Talent Show, Sports Rallies and Browns Ball. The activities and events we coordinate are vital in spreading school spirit as well as giving students a welcomed diversion from their classes. Over the past month we have been very busy preparing student activities and planning upcoming events. This year our welcoming theme is “Rise to the Challenge”. The main hallway was covered with beautiful colorful butterflies. Each butterfly had the name of a grade 10 student printed on it. We also held two events to welcome the grade 10’s. Our first event was a club convention in the Brown Gym which promoted various clubs offered this year and at our second event we served ice cream sandwiches and popsicles in the courtyard.

We encourage all students to get involved and participate in activities that will enhance their school life and help to create fond and lasting memories. So try out for a school team, join a club, audition for a play or cheer on and support your fellow Browns. We also held the Fall Sports Rally which introduced all of the Fall Sport teams. We were very fortunate to have Mr. Heath Brown, a Sports Anchor for CTV News and former graduate, participate in the rally and act as our MC. He urged our athletes to excel and put forth their best efforts; and he encouraged all the students to attend games and cheer on their teams. Heath was thrilled to join in our celebration and he told students, he has very fond memories of his time as a Saint Francis Brown and he hopes that they all feel very proud to be part of something truly special. We encourage all students to participate and rise to the challenge by promoting school spirit. Read the Daily announcements and check out social media to learn about the various activities and events happening at the school.

Mr. Heath Brown and Mia at the Fall Sports Rally

Student Council invites everyone to participate in Jacket Racket. WE encourage you and your family to go through your closets at home and find gently used winter wear that you no longer use. Coats, Jackets, Scarves, hats and mitts that you donate will be given to people who need warm clothing for the winter. Please bring your donation and drop it off in the main foyer anytime up to October 28. Carrying your donation to school one day means a warm winter every day for someone in need. Thank you.

The start of a new school year brings appreciation and enthusiasm for our journey together. Pope Francis will be closing the door on the Jubilee year of mercy shortly, and for all the good we have, there is much work to do. We are many parts, we are all one body in Christ, and the gifts we have, we are given to share. This year, we are eager to welcome a new slate of parents to be elected onto School Council for the 2017-18 school year. Please consider coming forward for nomination. Our school and students need you ! School Councils are instrumental in assisting the school to be all it can be, through communication, support, collaboration, caring, involvement, faith and development.

We responsibly have important roles to assist the objectives and specialness of our students, faculty, community and this great facility for learning and lasting legacy.

I am inspired and humbled by the dedication and service of our council family, (Mr.Nania, Mrs.Dube, Mrs.Hader, Mrs.Chretien, Mrs.Olafson, and notably, past council members, SC Chair Mrs.Rath, Mrs.Paviglianiti, Mrs.Vandervoort, and the many volunteers past and present) who give of themselves for the betterment of Saint Francis HIgh school. Their example brings much Joy to, and gratitude from, our community.

Much blessings on a safe and special year, Sincerely, John Volponi, SC Chair

Welcome back! Early September is a busy time in Student Services as students are assisted with course and schedule changes. Students met with their counsellor on the first day of classes and were given instructions for several new and continuing communication initiatives for both parents and students. Students were reminded to set up their MyBlueprint and MyPass accounts if they have not already done so. This year Saint Francis will connect student/ parent MyBlueprint accounts to PowerSchool so all students and parents can access course, grade and graduation information. In addition, students were reminded that Alberta Education wants all students to have their own MyPass account to obtain transcripts, Diploma exam scores or even to sign up for Diploma rewrites. Welcome to a new school year. I am Nicole Seneviratne and I am a teacher and Chaplain at the school. The district theme this year is “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.” This theme partners with the Church’s Jubilee Year of Mercy. Throughout this Jubilee we have been challenged to make mercy part of our everyday lives. One way of doing this is to make an effort to carry out the Corporal Works of mercy which are to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe the naked, visit the sick and imprisoned, bury the dead and give alms to the poor. As a school community we will be engaging in a variety of initiatives that help students carry out these works of mercy and we will be challenging them to serve the greater community.

Liturgy Dates

Sacramental Preparation

Throughout the school year students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of liturgies. October 4 was the grade 12 liturgy and Wall of Distinction Induction ceremony. October 5 was the grade 10 liturgy with guest speaker Andy Thibodeu. Our Remembrance Day Liturgies will take place on November 10. The grade 11 liturgy will be on November 23 with Michael Chiasson. This will be followed up by a parent evening with Michael on November 24. This is a great opportunity for parents to meet Michael Chiasson and talk about the everyday challenges and questions that students may have. More information will be available soon.

Saint Francis would like to prepare students for receiving the sacraments of initiation. I invite students who have not had the opportunity to receive First Holy Eucharist or Confirmation to please see Mrs. Seneviratne in room B113. If you have any questions please feel free to call or email Mrs. Seneviratne.

September at a Glance

The month of September has been a great jumping in point for our students in their quest to stay active, healthy and mentally strong as we begin the 2016-17 year at Saint Francis. Already our students have been modelling and leading healthy and active lifestyles. Our PE 20’s and 30’s have already enjoyed off campus field trips and our PE 10’s are now fully immersed in our programs and are enjoying their activities. We have had students participate in tennis, golf, canoe and kayak and next up will be bowling, wall climbing and swimming. On September 16 we hosted our annual Terry Fox Run with many generous donations from local business and our parent volunteers. It has become a tradition at Saint Francis and one that our students take great pride in. Again, thank you to all those that donated their time, money and/or energy. Students have also begun work on their semester projects. Each grade has a project designed to cover curriculum areas that would otherwise take them out of the gymnasium and into the classroom. Our focus is to keep our students active and engaged and these projects allow us to maximize our activity times with all our classes. And finally, I am proud to say our PAWsitivity award is back again for its second year. During our Fitness Fridays our students not only get to work with their peers to accomplish activities such as obstacle courses and crossfit challenges but each block, one student is chosen as our PAWsitivity award. This is given out to the student who models an outstanding work ethic and is also supportive of their classmates in the most positive way. This award continues to bring out the best in our students and has reinforced attributes such as character, compassion and empathy in all of our students. Look for more exciting news from our Physical Education department in the coming months.

The dance department of Saint Francis High School offers a wide range of talented dancers and performers featured in many entertainment opportunities during the year. Apart from attending regularly scheduled school dance classes, students have the opportunity to audition for our gala dance. The Gala night is a great fine arts event, showcasing the diverse background of our dancers, and the creative styles of our very own dance teacher Mrs. O’Brien as well as the immense talent of the students in the Drama, Music and Art Departments. In addition to the gala dance, dance students have the opportunity to showcase their hip hop skills in our pep rallies held three different times throughout the school year. These auditions are open to students of any dance background and experience level. The pep rally team of Saint Francis showcases the talent of not only our dancers, but our student choreographers as well who put in the creativity, dedication and time to audition their own dances to be performed by the team. It is a positive and welcoming way to be included in the spirit of Saint Francis. The upcoming audition for our SFI

Scroll to the bottom of the page and all the newsletters for the school year will be available It happens every fall: influenza arrives in Alberta, and takes a serious toll on our communities. Influenza is a real threat. It’s also preventable. Influenza immunization will be available, starting October 24, free of charge, to all Albertans six months of age and older. It’s the single most effective means of protecting your family from influenza, and by getting immunized early in the season, you will all have the opportunity to respond to immunization, and produce antibodies that will arm you against the influenza viruses you’ll be exposed to again throughout the season. Each year, influenza vaccine is developed to protect us against those strains of virus likely to circulate in our community. Though vaccine effectiveness may vary, know this: last season, influenza vaccine cut Albertan’s risk of influenza by half. Without immunization, Albertans were completely at risk. And we do mean all Albertans. Pregnant women, seniors, children, and individuals with underlying health conditions or compromised immune systems are at greater risk for severe complications; however, without immunization, even healthy Albertans – that includes you, parents! – are at risk of severe illness and even death. 62 Albertans died with influenza last season, and more than 1,600 Albertans were hospitalized. Let’s do better this year. Let’s make influenza one less thing your family has to deal with this winter. Prevention is your protection. Get immunized. For more information on the influenza program, including local clinic locations and schedules, visit ahs.ca/influenza or call Health Link at 811.
