FALL EDITION 2018-2019
SAINT FRANCIS Welcome everyone to the 2018-2019 school year. We hope that everyone had a wonderful summer. We are well into this new school year with just over 1600 students attending Saint Francis. Specifically, we have 475 grade 10 students, 551 grade 11 students and our graduating class of 2019 has 577 students. The Saint Francis administrative team consists of Mr. Mark Berger, Principal, our returning Vice Principals Mrs. Melanie LeBlanc, Mr. Darren Dudar, Mr. Jack Hill and new this year Mrs. Lingelbach— welcome to Saint Francis. Over the summer, construction crews worked to put up the steel at the front of the building and did a great deal of infrastructure work inside the building. We were happy to have them hand over several science classrooms and most importantly the Brown Gym. Work on the school roof will continue over the course of this semester with the hope of the following areas being turned over to us for the start of semester 2; Main Office and Counselling Areas, School Chapel, Fitness Centre, Art Room, Cosmetology Room, Culinary Kitchen and Cafeteria. Work on the school is expected to continue into the summer months and perhaps even into the 2019-2020 school year. We are in the process of reviewing our Diploma and Accountability Pillar results and our October 5, Professional Development Day will facilitate this process. We continue to improve our results and know our school community has much to celebrate. Our school’s Three-Year Goals and Annual Educational Results Report (AERR) will be published on our website mid-November. This information will be presented in detail at our School Council meeting on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m. Our council parents are passionate about Saint Francis and our students, we invite parents to join our council and attend the meetings. During the opening address to students, we focused on how the Peace Prayer of Saint Francis promotes love, kindness and the virtues of mercy and forgiveness. We are fortunate to be part of a school community blessed with a long history that is rich in tradition. Students were informed of the support the school community provides to ensure their success. We continue to encourage our students to engage in their school community by moving outside their areas of comfort and extending love and kindness to each other. Students were called upon to foster a school culture of effort by working together to raise expectations and prepare for success after high school. Our students know the qualities of what it means to be a Saint Francis student or as we say a “Brown”. Our students continue to demonstrate a great deal of leadership and growth, this year they are asked to “Be the Instrument of Change”. In October we celebrate our school and show off our school spirit during Spirit Week, October 9-11. Events planned include: Tuesday, October 9 – PAJAMA DAY—Wear your favorite PJs (please make sure they are school attire appropriate!) Wednesday, October 10 – PLAID SHIRT DAY—Wear your favorite Plaid Shirt! Thursday, October 11—WEAR YOUR SCHOOL SPIRIT – Wear your Brown and Orange! Once again, Student Council did an amazing job organizing the Saint Francis Fall Pep Rally. The Pep Rally showcased our school’s talented dancers and athletes while raising money to support this year’s charity drives. Our Fine Arts department is focusing its efforts on fine tuning the fall production, “The Outsiders”. The play will run December 4 and 6, with the Gala taking place on December 5. The Fine Arts Gala is a perfect opportunity to showcase the artistic talent of our students in music, drama, dance, culinary and art. Our fall sports activities are in full swing. Fall sports include: junior and senior volleyball teams, junior and senior football, swim team, girls’ soccer, golf and cross-country running. So far, we have experienced great success at all levels of our sporting events. The rivalry game between Saint Francis Browns and the ND Pride is October 11. Both teams are currently undefeated. The past few years 4500 to 5000 fans have attended the Browns vs Pride matchup. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, October 9 during the lunch break in the main foyer. Tickets sold at Saint Francis are $2 or $5 at the gate; save some money and purchase tickets for the family at the school. Game time is 6:00 p.m. and the gates open at 5:30 p.m. There will be no liquids permitted into the stadium. Students are advised to check our website, D2L and our Daily announcements for all our event times. Final Word Saint Francis is a community that is committed to learning excellence. We set high expectations for ourselves and our students. Our staff will deliver outstanding educational programming for your son or daughter to help them achieve their full potentials. To do so, we require the assistance and feedback from all stakeholder groups. Parents are welcome to volunteer their time to support our many programs and events. Please feel free to contact the school and let us know how we are doing. The Staff of Saint Francis

Welcome all returning and new families to Saint Francis. Our 2018-19 School Council is very excited about the new school year. There is so much happening at the school this year (especially with the modernization) a great way to stay connected with all the happenings at the school is to attend one or all of the School Council meetings. Mark Berger, Principal, attends every council meeting and brings a wealth of information and news to share with the parents. Please consider joining us at our next meeting on Tuesday, November 20 at 5:00 p.m., we look forward to seeing you! There are two positions available on the school council. One position is Secretary and the other is Volunteer Coordinator. The Secretary position involves attending the council meetings and taking minutes. We only have five meetings per year so the time commitment is minimal. The Volunteer Coordinator position is one that can be done from home with minimal time commitment also. If you are interested in any of these positions, please contact Claude Chretien (mcchretien@shaw.ca or call 403-465-1263). There are many volunteer opportunities at Saint Francis. These opportunities are filled through our volunteer database. By adding your name to the database, you will receive emails of volunteer opportunities at the school. We do not send out mass emails regarding volunteer requests, only those signed up on the database will receive the emails for volunteers. If you think you might be interested in volunteering at the school, please add your name to our volunteer database. You are not committing to anything by signing up. Throughout the year we require volunteers for Browns Ball, Teacher Appreciation Lunch and Graduation and many other special events. If you are interested in signing up, please select the following Volunteer Form. Our Council has a few fundraisers planned for the upcoming year. In the spring we will be selling beautiful, locally grown plants to help raise money in support of School Council initiatives, such as enhancements the Learning Commons and the annual year-end luncheon to thank our wonderful staff at Saint Francis. Plants are a great way to encourage our friends and family to get out into the garden while supporting our school. Watch for the plant order forms in early April.
We will also be hosting several Papa John’s Pizza Nights throughout the school year, please see below for more details. When you order online from the Arbour Lake or Stadium Papa John’s locations on Nov. 12, Dec. 13 and Apr. 23, you will receive 15% off your regular price order and Papa John’s will donate 15% to Saint Francis. Just use the promo code STF15 at the start of your order. What a great excuse to not cook on these nights! Feel free to share the promo code with your friends and family. We are very excited about the upcoming school year. If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please feel free to contact any of our council members. Be the Instrument of Change Student Council would like to welcome all new and returning students, teachers, staff and parents of our Saint Francis Community. Student Council is a group of dedicated, hard-working young men and women who ensure that there is always something interesting going on at school. Throughout the school year we plan special activities and events such as our Sports Rallies and Browns Ball. The activities and events we coordinate are vital in spreading school spirit as well as giving students a welcomed diversion from their classes. Check the Daily announcements to find out information about the various activities and events happening at the school. Justine Lohman, Jasper Jordon and Alex Iwasyk at Club Day Student Council has been very busy preparing student activities and planning upcoming events. This year our welcoming theme comes from our patron Saints’ Peace Prayer. It is “Be the Instrument of Change.” The front hallway was covered with Tao Crosses in vibrant colours. Each cross had the name of a grade 10 student printed on it. We encourage all students to get involved and participate in activities that will enhance their school life and help to create fond and lasting memories. In September, we held two events to welcome the grade 10’s. Our first event was a club convention in the Orange Gym which promoted various clubs offered this year. This year we introduced new clubs which further encourage inclusion and a concern for the both the environment and world as a whole. Then, at our second event we served frozen popsicles and ice cream desserts to grade 10 students. Even though the weather in September did not cooperate, the students still enjoyed these frozen treats. We also held the Fall Sports Rally which showcased all of the Fall Sport teams and our brand new Brown Gym. Students showed their school spirit by sporting our school colours. This enhanced the atmosphere at the rally. We were also very fortunate to have Mr. Heath Brown, a former graduate, act as our MC. Heath was honoured to join us in our celebration and he told students, he has very fond memories of his time as a Saint Francis Brown and he hopes that they all feel very proud to be part of something truly special. He urged our athletes to excel and put forth their best efforts; and he encouraged all the students to attend games and cheer on their teams. Student Council invites everyone to participate in Jacket Racket. WE encourage you and your family to go through your closets at home and find gently used winter wear that you no longer use. Coats, jackets, scarves, hats and mitts that you donate will be given to people who need warm clothing for the winter. Please bring your donation and drop it off in the main foyer anytime up to October 28. Mr. Heath Brown at the Fall Sports Rally Students are encouraged to participate and help enrich our school spirit. So try out for a school team, join a club, audition for a play or cheer on and support your fellow Browns.
Carrying your donation to school one day means a warm winter every day for someone in need.
Welcome to a new school year. I am Nicole Seneviratne, a teacher and the Chaplain here at Saint Francis High School. Our Faith theme this year is the second part of our three year theme and it is “Seek and you will find. The search for meaning is one of the fundamental things that make us human. As our children grow into young adults we wonder what they will make of their lives. We have guided them and supported them, but eventually, the search has to be something that comes from within. This year we will explore this theme with a variety of liturgies and guest speakers, with the hope that students will begin to think about the greater meaning and purpose of their lives once they leave high school.
Liturgy Dates Throughout the school year students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of Liturgies and Mass. October 4 was the Feast Day of St. Francis and a Liturgy was held for our Grade 12 students. Our grade 10 Liturgy will take place on October 11, with guest speaker Andy Thibodeau who shares his message of caring and service to inspire students to get involved in the school community. The Grade 11 Liturgy will follow on October 22, with a presentation by Live Different with a focus on youth empowerment. We will also have Remembrance Day Liturgies for all grades on November 9.
Sacramental Preparation If your child has not received the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist or Confirmation and they wish to prepare and receive any of them, please contact Mrs. Seneviratne as she will be able to help students prepare for these sacraments.
September is always a busy month for Student Services. We are pleased to report that our online scheduling system was a success this year and resulted in many more students coming back to satisfactory timetables. Students have been reminded to set up their myBlueprint and myPass accounts if they have not already done so. Alberta Education requires all students have a myPass account to view and order transcripts and access diploma exam results. Once again, Students Services is offering twitter and remind to students and parents. Our twitter feed is @SFGuidanceCCSD and remind instructions text stfrancisp to number 431-800-0409. Students and parents may also access post-secondary and scholarship information in their D2L course labelled “General Course Student Services” under content.

Mrs. Carolyn Campbell is the Career Practitioner for St. Francis, St. Timothy and St. Martin de Porres High Schools. Email: carolyn.campbell@cssd.ab.ca Saint Francis Hours: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and alternating Mondays Location: Student Services
The Career Practitioner is available to assist students with the following: Career planning – What would you like to do after high school? Self Assessment – Interests, Skills, Values and Personality Occupational Research Job Search - Resumes, Cover Letters and Interview Writing Post Secondary Exploration Volunteer Opportunities Summer Programs Book an appointment with Mrs. Campbell through Mrs. Pilon in Student Services in N200. What is Career Planning? Career planning is a unique life long process for each person. Your Career Practitioner will work with you to learn more about how your interests, skills, values and personality impact your choice of career direction. It is an active process that students begin in their Career and Life Management class and continues with meetings with your Career Practitioner and your Student Services counsellor. You will be making career decisions throughout your life. Does the Career Centre offer Career Tests and Assessments? Any “career tests” are tools for students to learn more about themselves and potential careers that may be of interest to them. The “tests” are designed to provide career suggestions for exploration but there is no test that will tell a student what they should have as a career. The goal is for the students to learn as much as they can about themselves and the careers that are available so they themselves can make an informed decision about their first step after high school. Will the Career Centre find me a job? We do everything we can to give students the tools to find their own jobs. That may mean assisting students with creating a resume and cover letter, doing practice job interviews and talking about job-search skills. Can I get High School credits for my part-time job or volunteer work? Yes, you can! You must see Mr. Buckie, Off Campus Teacher in the Learning Commons. September at a Glance A new year brings new opportunities, and this couldn’t be truer with our Physical Education department in 2018. With our main gymnasium slated to be re-opened in September there is a growing sense of excitement that comes along with it. The plans called for a new design, hardwood floor, bleachers and sound system as well as more space and options for our students to make active and healthy choices. Our students are the main beneficiaries of our new gymnasium and we are all ready to make the most of it. With extra badminton and volleyball courts, 8 glass basketball backboards, 2 curtains to create more ‘play space’ and in the coming months a new digital scoreboard, you can easily see why everyone is chomping at the bit for the grand re-opening. In the meantime, our students are fully immersed in their off-campus activities, including golf, canoe and kayaking, tennis, and beach volleyball, and their on-campus units, including track and field, softball, football and soccer. As well, work has begun on their semester projects; designed to cover curriculum areas that would otherwise take them out of the gymnasium and into the classroom. We are also in the midst of planning our second annual ALL BOYS day. Twelve influential speakers from the Calgary area will talk to our boys about a number of topics including, but not limited to, career choices, active living for a lifetime, mental health and awareness, and body image. This year’s event will take place on November 14. Look for more exciting news from our Physical Education department in the coming months. Donny Marchuk CT Physical Education

The cross country team welcomes students of all running abilities. The season includes four meets involving over 30 Calgary-area schools and approximately 100 students per age-level race. In the first meet, Saint Francis students placed in the top 40, top 20 and even top 3. There were also a number of personal best finishes. Our team is proud of all of our members' dedication to active living and self-improvement. City and Provincial Championships run October 10 in Cochrane and October 20 in Vermilion, respectively. See you out on the trails!
The Jr. Browns are off to a great start. Heading into October the Browns are undefeated and rely on their athleticism and work-ethic. After a convincing win over Ernest Manning the team is poised to take on the city in the upcoming months and hopes to win a City Championship. With the ability to both run and pass and a hard-hitting defense the Jr. Browns are excited for what is to come.

We have a great group of athletes. Our goal is to finish first in league and go on to win the City Championship banner. We won a silver medal at the U of C tournament losing a close game to Western Canada. We are currently sitting at 1-1 in league play. Our next game is at home in our new gym when we play the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs.
The Saint Francis Junior Boys Volleyball Team have had a good start to the season with a tremendous amount of improvement through the first couple weeks. The boys are working hard everyday in practices and we’re looking forward to the season. We have a great group of student athletes that represent Saint Francis on and off the court. The team is mostly grade 10s, but we’re fortunate enough to have some grade 11s that lead our group. Come out and support our junior boys this season. Go Browns Go!
The boys golf team members were Michael Hoppe, Jack Munson, Quinn Laidlaw and Jason Bugera. This is the second year for this team to compete at the Zones Competition. Last week they beat out Western Canada by 4 strokes to advance to the ASAA Provincial Tournament at River Spirit Golf Course and Springbank Links—the team captured 3rd place. Great job Browns!
We have a very talented volleyball team. Our grade 12s were city champions in grade 10 and city finalists last year. We hope to be there again! So far we are 2-0 in league play. We placed 7th out of 20 teams at the U of C tournament. The Girls Volleyball teams will host their Annual Saint Francis tournament on Oct. 12 and 13. Come out and watch some great volleyball. Congratulation to our Browns for winning the Bishop O’Byrne (BOB) Tournament, Sept. 28 and 29. Go Browns Go!
The Saint Francis Swim team will begin swimming this month. The swim team can accommodate 60 swimmers, everyone is welcome to come out, participate and improve their stroke. The swim season ends with a final competition in December.
Fall soccer is in full swing, and the Browns girls team are here to play! After tryouts the coaches picked 24 players who demonstrated tenacity, skill, and dedication towards the sport. During the pep rally everyone got to see the team as well as the honour they take in being apart of the Saint Francis community. The girls wear the colour orange with pride both on and off of the turf. As the season has progressed they’ve faced tough competition. Even though the team has collected some losses this year, it’s viewed as an opportunity for growth and improvement. Every athlete playing demonstrates talent on the pitch which ultimately allows the girls to develop as one. Post-game, there’s a new focus on trying to strive for excellence in order to beat our competitors. The team also prioritizes balance between offensive and defensive plays. Working hard in practices consistently translates to the play on field. Through rain, snow, wind, and hail the Browns always come out with a fight. There are still quite a few events scheduled in the season. So, come with your blankets, rain coats and mittens to support your girls soccer players. The Saint Francis school spirit is always appreciated. Go Browns Go! This fall is a very exciting time for the Saint Francis Drama Department. We are well into our rehearsals for our fall production of The Outsiders, a show about the highs and lows of teenage life. With a cast made up of a mixture of all three grades, the play is a great way for new and veteran drama students alike to get to know each other. Our Improv Team has already gotten underway, with group auditions getting the prospective team members into the fastpaced and high-energy environment of the team. The official group will soon be finalized, and practices will take place for the rest of the school year. The Drama Department is very excited for all of the new projects we’re working on, and we cannot wait to present them for the students, staff, and families of St. Francis. We appreciate your support and hope to see you in the audience!
