WINTER EDITION 2019-2020

SAINT FRANCIS

Welcome parents to our mid year newsletter addition. With our Semester 1 final and diploma exams completed we hope that all students were able to achieve success in their courses. Please be aware that our Counsellors are available to support students with changes to their Semester 2 courses if required. We hope that you take the time to review all the exciting events that have taken place at Saint Francis. Each newsletter captures the spirit of the school and the memories we have built together with our students. Thank you to all the contributors who have taken the time to showcase their clubs, teams, cast members or musicians. We have so much to celebrate and be proud of as a school community, we hope you find that this newsletter captures the spirit of Saint Francis. For many years to come students can go back and reflect on their experiences in high school as the newsletters are like mini yearbooks with lots of pictures. Speaking of yearbooks, the 2018-2019 yearbook is now available for those alumni students who pre-purchased a copy to pick up starting Monday, February 3, 2020. Thank you to Mrs. McIntyre and our yearbook students for their time and efforts. We recently had Bishop McGrattan and Father Vincent visit the school for a tour. They were both very impressed with the school and our students. It was great to showcase all the new areas that have been completed. The Saint Francis modernization project has been going on for the past 2.5 years and we are anticipating that the final phase of the project will be completed this coming June, which include the elevator, solar panels and exterior front entrance. It is amazing to see how the changes that have already occurred and the positive impact the modernization project has had on our school community. We are truly blessed for all that we have been given by both the province and district. On Tuesday, February 25, Saint Francis High School staff, students and parents will celebrated Shrove Tuesday. We are looking for parent volunteers to assist in helping us serve over 1700 students and faculty. We will also celebrate the first day of lent with our Ash Wednesday liturgies taking place at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church, parents are welcome to join us as we begin our Lenten journeys. Liturgy times will be posted on the school website. The coming months will be filled with anticipation for our upcoming graduation events. The initial graduation information letters will soon be mailed to our graduating students regarding fees, times and dates of all ceremonies. Graduates and parents can expect a second communication following our Easter break with further information. You may also check our school website for up-to-date information at https://www.cssd.ab.ca/schools/ stfrancis/Students/Graduation/Pages/default.aspx To assist us in our efforts to better serve the needs of our families, we ask that our grade 10 parents/families complete the Alberta Education Accountability Survey that were mailed out as of January 13, 2020, by Alberta Education. The link to the survey is https://public.education.alberta.ca/APOS/ Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving. The last day for all survey submissions is February 28, 2020. The results will be shared as part of our school plans which will be released in November. Please, enjoy the newsletter and we wish everyone all the best as we begin Semester 2.

Placing the Cross at the front of Saint Francis

During the Christmas break, I was cleaning and came across my yearbooks from Saint Francis. I remember playing rugby as I thumbed through the pages. As we prepare for another season of Browns’ rugby, it brought back great memories. I realized how many of the young men I played with and the connections we made at Saint Francis. One of my teammates, Mr. Buckie, scored the winning try in my senior year to capture our 2nd City Championship. The Lynn family has been part of Saint Francis rugby for many years. My Uncle Jim, who was the Priest at Saint Francis at the time, volunteered to be the teacher representative. During my grade 10 year, we lost every game, but by the time I graduated we had won 2 City Championships and Saint Francis was able to field two teams. My brother also got to experience a Saint Francis Rugby City Championship.

Calgary Herald, June 18, 1982

I returned in the early 90s and coached Mr. Park and his classmates. I then returned to cheer on my son, TJ, and help Mr. Audia coach. TJ experienced a City Championship victory in his senior year and was named top player for the high schools in Calgary. I then coached the girls’ rugby team for a couple of years with my son TJ and then coached when my son Peter attended Saint Francis. Mr. Audia took the Saint Francis rugby team to Italy and I was blessed to celebrated my 50th birthday with the team in Venice. I was the head coach the following year when we were able to capture another City Championship. One of the players from that team had gone on to play for Team Canada. Looking forward to this upcoming season, I am excited to work with Ms. Boissonneault and Coach Clayton and return as a junior coach. I want to encourage all the young men at Saint Francis to give rugby a try. It is a sport that is played around the world. Please see Ms. Boissonneault if you are interested in trying out. On Fri., Dec 13, Saint Francis hosted an Hour of Code. Over 50 students participated in this international event. Saint Francis was one of 3100 locations participating in Canada. For more information check out: https://hourofcode.com/ca Our students used the hour to learn programming in a variety of mediums including: making a video game, creating a disco dance party and making motion sensing Microbit programs.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed the Christmas break. Brown's Ball This year's Browns Ball saw over 25 parent volunteers and numerous staff members help make the event a success. Thank you to all the parents and teachers who volunteered, without them the event would not be possible. Textbook Rentals As we begin the new semester, our textbook rentals will be busy again with first semester returns and second semester sign outs. We need parent volunteers to help ensure this process is as seamless and timely as possible. If you are available January 24, January 29, January 30, February 3 or 4 during the day, please contact Claude Chretien at mcchretien@shaw.ca

It’s hard to believe that the first semester has come and gone. There are so many things happening in the school that it can be difficult to keep up with everything. In our busy lives it is important to take time out to retreat from all the busyness, catch our breath and turn our minds away from the endless list of things we need to do. Prayer is a way to remind us that our lives are more than just tasks and that we are not alone in the journey. Our new Chapel offers students and staff a quiet place to rest, reflect and pray. Every Wednesday morning at 8:15 there is Mass. All staff, students and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Students had the opportunity to prepare for Christmas by attending Mass at Canadian Martyr’s. We will have Ash Wednesday and Holy Thursday liturgies coming up in semester two. On January 17, we were blessed to have a Bishop McGrattan visit our school. He toured the building and was impressed with all the new areas and programs we have to offer our students.

Our Advent project this year was collecting food and gift cards for our Christmas Hamper program to support families in our community. Thanks to everyone for their generous donations. Through various initiatives by teachers and clubs we raised over $3000 for our Hamper program. Special thank you to the Jr. Football and Coach Sauer and Sheldon for assembling the hampers and parents for delivering them.

This year we will be launching a Lent campaign in support of Purses of Hope an organization that gives purses filled with a few essentials such as makeup and hygiene items to homeless and at risk women in Calgary. We are currently collecting new or gently used purses which we will be distributing to TA’s and asking them to fill with items. If you have a purse to donate leave it at the main office or send with it with your child to give to their TA.

Our ES ll students have been very busy this year. Here is a look back and what some of our students had to say… “It was really awesome at the Firehall Station 10, best tour ever!” KF “Christmas Open House...smile” AD “We had a great adventure at the Firehall...putting out pylons! AC “We had fun at the Unified Sports Competition...everybody was a good sport!” CM “Fun with our friends!” MM “Fun with our friends and fun day playing basketball!” EH “Awesome team, ES ll/2019!!!” NK Wishing everyone a Happy New Year!

Recently, the Spanish immersion and ES classes welcomed a special guest speaker, Mr. Mike McDonald, who came to present about Mission Mexico and the people in the villages of Guerrero, Mexico. Mr. McDonald is a former Calgary Catholic high school teacher who now lives in Guerrero, where he tirelessly provides and coordinates missionary services. Mission Mexico, sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary as a social justice outreach project, helps provides shelter, clothing, healthcare and education. It built a school, and also sponsors scholarships for some students who want to pursue post-secondary. The students, in turn, utilize their education to provide services in their home town. For more information about Mission Mexico: http://missionmexico.com The ES1 class hosted a Chili lunch fundraiser on Wed., Jan 22, in order to raise funds for Mission Mexico, a social justice project sponsored by the Diocese of Calgary. The students embarked on a huge learning experience to plan, budget, shop, prepare food, and host. They were also responsible for projecting, collecting and tallying the donations.

Showing Our Christmas Spirit For the month of December, Student Council encouraged and challenged students and staff to show their Christmas spirit. For fifteen days, a daily suggestion was made on how students and staff could demonstrate and spread Acts of Kindness. In the final week of classes, our community donned their festive Christmas apparel to help share Christmas cheer. From wearing Santa hats, reindeer antlers and Christmas socks, enjoying Christmas carols, treats and hot chocolate to finally sporting our traditional ugly sweaters, our community embraced the coming holidays and added fun to each day. Lights, Camera, Action!

This year Student Council was presented with a new challenge in organizing Browns Ball since areas previously unavailable were finally accessible. We had new areas to decorate like our main stairwell which we covered with cascading balloons. Students entered through the main side entrance to the school. As the students took their first steps, they were transported to Hollywood with our theme, “Lights, Camera, Action.” Dressed for a night of dancing, students were drawn into the celebratory atmosphere filled with laughter, excitement and music. Cellphones flickered everywhere capturing each special moment. The Brown Gym shook from the vibrations of the music pulsating out of the speakers. Everyone danced to their favorite tunes being played by DJ Fayyaz with Pez Productions. In the new cafeteria, students visited various Disney sets from timeless and iconic animated movies to commemorate the night with their friends. As the evening drew to a close, grade 10 and 11 students left smiling despite their aching feet while the grade 12’s slowly exited, reluctant to see their last Browns Ball coming to an end. This fun-filled evening would not be possible without the countless hours invested by Student Council and the student volunteers. We were aided by administration, teachers, caretaking staff, parent volunteers, Constable Lynn, and some members of the school’s construction crew who ensured that the evening was safe and enjoyable. To all those who invested time into Brown’s Ball, Thank You! Student Council

During first semester, Lambda club had a lot of fun sharing talents and laughs through a variety of activities, such as bracelet making, Halloween balloon decoration, and gingerbread house construction. Plans for second semester include continuing anti-bullying initiatives, especially Pink Shirt Day. The club usually meets Wednesday over lunch.

Our Reach for the Top team is back for another year of success! Reach For the Top is a high school trivia league, where school teams compete against each other in matches comprised of a variety of trivia questions. Our team this year features many returning Grade 11s & 12s, with just enough new blood to keep things interesting. We’ve already built a winning record from matches against St. Mary’s & Bishop Carroll, and are looking forward to more exhibition matches before the regional tournament in March. Stay tuned for results!

Dear students, parents and staff, Thank you very much for your generous contribution to Jacket Racket this year. The jackets, snow pants, hats and mittens you donated have been distributed to schools throughout the city. Thanks to your kindness and caring, many, many children are now warmly bundled up and ready for winter. You have made a difference! With gratitude and best wishes, Elaine Russell

The French students enjoyed a traditional French dinner. Bon Appétit!

We the students at S.A.D.D club want to welcome everyone to the new year, 2020. With a new year comes new resolutions and we want to encourage students, teachers and parents to make the resolution of driving safe and sober. We want to keep the whole St. Francis community a safe and secure environment for everyone, including present and future students and teachers. Over the past couple months, we have had the opportunity to make a difference in our school and city community by giving decorated liquor bags to liquor stores across Calgary, which warn against the destructive act of driving distracted, impaired and dangerously. By doing this we hope we can reduce the risk of collisions and improve road safety. The following video made by St. Francis SADD club student Jaxon Pham, shows our club working on the liquor bag campaign and enjoying some eggnog. Some students associated eggnog as being primarily an alcoholic drink and were surprised that it isn’t! https://youtu.be/LBQx3I0FcU4 S.A.D.D club hopes to see you (new members welcome) with us next semester every Tuesday in room B211 (Mrs. Shewkenek’s classroom) and until then, drive safe and we wish you the best with the end of the semester!! Abigail Hagel, Malakai Alexis-Wilson, Teresa Tetreau, Emma Herspiegl.

Career Planning—What would you like to do after high school? Self Assessment—Interests, Skills, Values and Personality Occupational Research Job Search—Resumes, Cover Letters and Interviews Post Secondary Exploration/Research/Volunteer Opportunities

WHAT IS CAREER PLANNING? Career planning is a unique, lifelong process for each person. The Career Practitioner will work with students to explore how interests, skills, values, and personality impact your choice of career direction. It is an active process that begins in the Career and Life Management Class and may continue with meetings with the Career Practitioner and Student Services Counsellor. Individuals will be making career decisions on a continuous basis through their lives. DOES THE CAREER PRACTITIONER OFFER CAREER TESTS AND ASSESSMENTS? Any “career tests” are tools for students to learn more about themselves and the potential careers that may be of interest to them. The “tests” are designed to provide career suggestions for exploration but there is not test that will tell a student what they should do as a career. The goal is for students to learn as much as they can about themselves and the careers that are available so they can make an informed decision about their first step after high school. WILL THE CAREER PRACTITIONER FIND ME A JOB? Students are given the tools to find their own jobs. The 2019 Saint Francis Invitational Senior Boys Basketball Tournament (SFI) marked the 50th year of this annual event! SFI50 was held Dec. 13 & 14, 2019. To help commemorate the 50th SFI, we honoured the five Browns senior boys head coaches over the 50 years of the SFI Tournament; Gary DeMan, David Burns, Richard Svoboda, Francois Cousin and Don Marchuk. Saint Francis Athletics and SFI is very fortunate to have the support of so many of our alumni and students. Every year, we welcome our tournament patrons and all Browns fans to the tournament. Saint Francis Athletics benefits greatly from generous patron contributions each year.

The Senior Girls Volleyball Team had a great season despite the fact we only played in our gym two times prior to playoffs due to modernization. Although we made our goal of making it to cities, we ended up losing to Western Canada. However we redeemed ourselves at Provincials by capturing 5th place which was one better than last year. We want to “Thank our grade 12s for a wonderful three years building our Volleyball program. Alice and Sierra will take over the lead next year. We wish you all the best in your club seasons.

The Senior Boys had a tough season this year against some very good competition. But as a coach, I am very proud of how far they came as a team and individuals. The boys stepped up to the challenges on game days, worked hard during practice and shared a lot of laughs along the way. We said goodbye to six players this year who were great leaders and representatives of the Saint Francis Browns. Wishing our graduates all the best and looking forward to next season.

Congratulations to the St Francis Swim Team on another very successful season! We finished our season off with the City Championship on December 3rd at Repsol Sport Centre. The Browns placed 14th out of 32 schools! Special mention goes to Ryenne Katterhagen who won Gold in the 100 m I.M. and Bronze in the 100 m Breaststroke! Good luck to our graduating swimmers and we will see all returning and new swimmers on deck in the fall. Thank you to coaches Mrs. Peters, Ms. Wadson, Mr. Barth and Mr. Pullen

This season has been off to a great start for our Junior Girls Basketball team. With 5 returning players from last season plus our new talented grade 10. Our most memorable buzzer beater games were against St Mary’ s and William Aberhart. Both of those games showed our girls keep fighting until the very last second. We are looking forward to seeing how the rest of the season goes and are hopeful it will be our best season yet!

The Junior boys have had a great start to their season with a 3-1 record. The boys have been working extremely hard and look forward to the remaining games in February.

So far this year the Senior Girls Basketball Team has been very busy. Unlike in other years the girls schedule has been full the first two months, accumulating with the Browns playing 19 games before exam break. This includes 2 in town tournaments (D4 and Bishop Caroll) and 1 in Lethbridge (Chinook). The Senior Browns are starting to find their stride and build some consistency. The younger players are starting to step up big time and the rest of the time is starting to gel. The coaches are excited to get back on the court and finish the season as strong as possible.

As we near the mid-point of the basketball season, this years Senior Boys Basketball team is starting to find their way. They are looking to build off their momentum from a 2nd place finish at this year’s 50th Annual SFI Basketball Tournament. In February, they will play 6 league games and participate in the prestigious O’Leary Invitational, up in Edmonton, and the Notre Dame Invitational (NDI) right here in Calgary. Good luck to the boys as they look to move up the standings in a tough North division.
