Dear Graduates and Friends, I am honored to be writing to you in this special edition of the GradNews as we pay tribute to Brother Leonard Conway and Brother Robert Kent for their 50 Years of dedicated service. Before I say a few words about these two great Franciscans though, I thought you should know that we concluded another very noteworthy school year with every one of our 612 seniors graduating on June 2nd. As usual, nearly every one of them will be attending college this fall—including many of the most prestigious schools in the country. As a group, these seniors were offered more than $160 million in college scholarships! Their success can be attributed in large measure to YOUR involvement and support which allows us to offer all our students a truly outstanding academic and extracurricular program. So thank you for all you do to help us in this mission!

of students from all walks of life, seeing them off to college, staying connected with them as alumni who are moving into their careers, starting their own families, and even welcoming grandchildren now in many cases. They have always been here for us. The sense of tradition and stability they have provided for the Prep cannot be measured. So please take a look at GradNews pages 6-8 and read more about Brother Leonard and Brother Robert and the celebrations we shared with them this past year. Within these GradNews pages you will also see the highlights from many other events and activities that help keep you connected with us and with your classmates. As we like to say, “High School is four years but the Prep is forever!”

Walk-A-Thon

On Friday, September 29, 2017, St. Francis Prep held its seventh annual Walk-a-thon fundraising event. The proceeds of this event benefit special projects and programs at the Prep, most notably the current Capital Improvement and Modernization Project. It is important for you to know that your generous contributions and pledges are being put to very good use each and every day for the benefit of our students! We already constructed new Physical Education and Art Education Centers and totally renovated and upgraded the Science Classrooms and Laboratories.

Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. & Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F. celebrate

as Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn

On Sunday, May 20th, we celebrated Brother Leonard Conway’s and Brother Robert Kent’s 50 Years as Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn. Incredibly, they have each spent their entire ministry—without interruption—serving the tens of thousands of students who have come through the doors of St. Francis Prep since 1968. 6

Bro. Leonard Conway, O.S.F. Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. was born on November 8, 1948 in Brooklyn. His parents, Edmund Francis, Jr. (who passed away in 2001) and Cecilia (who passed in 1975), raised him and his brother John on Sherman Street in Park Slope and Holy Name Parish. His brother and sister-in-law reside in Newark, Delaware, and have three children and numerous grandchildren. Brother Leonard is a member of the first graduating class of Bishop Ford High School, Park Slope (1966). He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics (1971) from St. Francis College, as well as Master of Science in Computer Science (1974) from Pratt Institute. He also holds permanent state certification in math, business, and administration and supervision. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from St. Francis College in 2008. Brother Leonard entered the St. Francis Novitiate in July 1966, received the habit in January 1967 and professed vows as a Franciscan Brother in January 1968. While attending St. Francis College he resided at the Franciscan Brothers Scholasticate until graduation in January 1971 at which time he began his long-time ministry at St. Francis Preparatory School, a ministry that continues today. During his time at the Prep he has taught mathematics and business classes, introduced computer education in 1973, and served as the Director of Computer Sciences beginning in 1980. In 1983 he was appointed Principal of St. Francis Prep. He served 30 years in that role until 2013. In 2013 the administration model changed to President/Principal, and he has served as President of the Prep since that time. During Brother Leonard’s time in administration, the school has received numerous awards, including the U.S. Department of Education’s first Excellence in Education Award (1983-1984) and recognition as an Outstanding American High School by U.S. News and World Report (1999). Under his leadership in 2008-09, the Prep celebrated the 150th Anniversary of its founding in Brooklyn in 1858.

of St. Francis Preparatory School–Class of 2001. The Queens Courier recognized him with the Best Principal and King of Queens Awards (2012). Brother Leonard has led two successful campaigns at the Prep: The Endowment Campaign (1997) and The Campaign for St. Francis Prep (Stage One: 2008-2011; Stage Two: 2012-Present), the ongoing capital campaign designed to establish a state-ofthe-art fitness center, an art education center, new science labs and music facilities, and to remodel other areas of the Prep. He has personally solicited all major gifts for these campaigns. Based on a conversation with the Superior General of the Irish Franciscan Brothers, Brother Leonard also established a relationship between St. Francis Prep and the St. Francis Secondary School in Lare, Kenya. He visited Kenya in the summer of 2013 and again this past summer of 2018, and he found these visits to be experiences of a lifetime. In addition to his duties at St. Francis Prep, he served as the Director of Camp Alvernia (1977-1990). During his time there, Camp Alvernia was revitalized with an enrollment of over 200 residents and 200 day campers. Brother Leonard serves as the Vice-Chairman of the St. Francis College Board of Trustees as well as a member of St. Anthony’s High School Board of Trustees. He remains active in the Middle States Association of Secondary Schools, serving annually as team chairperson as well as one of the secondary school commissioners for the association. In his current role as President of St. Francis Prep, he enjoys meeting with alumni to tell the Prep story, update them on the latest happenings and ask for their support. He finds this to be very rewarding—and just the latest chapter in a 50 year career devoted to promoting the wonderful Franciscan tradition in education.

Personal awards bestowed upon Brother Leonard have included the Franciscan Spirit Award (1986) and the St. Francis College “Alumni Achievement” Award. He was profiled in Newsday (1989), named in Who’s Who in American Education (1995), received the St. John’s University President’s Medal in Catholic Education (1998) and the Outstanding Schools Administration Award (2011), recognized in Strathmore’s Who’s Who--Honored Millennium Member (2000-01), and was named an Honorary Alumnus Grad News • Summer/Fall 2018

Bro. Robert Kent, O.S.F. Robert Kent was born in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn. He was very active in Holy Name Parish where he attended grammar school and where the seeds for his future vocation were planted and then nurtured by his loving parents, Edward and Sarah Jean, and his siblings, John, Ed, Walter, Don, Gerard, and Theresa. He eventually went on to study at St. John’s University where he received his B.A. and his M.A. in History. In 1966 he decided that the Franciscan way of life provided the right pathway for him, and so, following in his brother Ed’s footsteps, he served 1 ½ years in the Novitiate and another six months in the Scholasticate before arriving at St. Francis Prep in the summer of 1968 and beginning that fall as a History teacher and as an assistant to the Athletic Director, Brother Cyprian. Just as Brother Leonard has done, Brother Robert has served his entire 50 year ministry as a Franciscan Brother at St. Francis Prep, starting in Brooklyn and then moving with the school to Fresh Meadows in 1974. Among his many duties over the years, Brother Robert served as the Prep’s Athletic Director for 29 years, helping to continue a very successful athletic tradition at the school. During that period, Brother coached the Freshman Basketball Team for 23 years (1968-2001), Junior Varsity Baseball for 14 years (1968-81), and Varsity Baseball for the past 37 years (1981 to the present), while also teaching History and Math. He recently retired from the school’s Mathematics Department. As Frosh Basketball Coach, he compiled a record of 386-143. His teams reached the Finals 5 times and won the City Championship twice. His Junior Varsity Baseball Teams compiled a record of 206-41, reaching the Finals 7 times and winning 5 City Championships. On the Varsity Baseball level, he has compiled a record of 651-327, reaching the Finals five times and winning the City Championship three times (1986 at Shea, 1995 at Yankee Stadium and St. John’s University in 2007). 8

Nearly 150 of his former athletes continued to play on the college level and 6 have played professionally. 23 of his former student athletes played at Ivy League universities. Brother Robert has been named “Coach of the Year” 4 times by The New York Daily News; 4 times by The Tablet; twice by Newsday; and once by The New York Post. He was also named New York State Coach of the Year in 1995 and was inducted into the CHSAA Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Prep’s Red & Blue Ring of Honor in 2014. Even after so many accolades, he will say without hesitation, “Any of my success is due to the players and many coaches who have assisted me through these years.” He received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from St. Francis College in 1998, and, in addition to his current baseball coaching duties, Brother Robert also serves as the Prep’s Alumni Director, an important position in the school’s ongoing outreach efforts. He has often stated, “Alumni link us to the past and they give generously to continually improve and enhance the lives of those who come after them.” The same could be said of Brother Robert himself. He has given generously of his time and talent for 50 years in order to improve and enhance the lives of thousands of young students and athletes from all walks of life. He has been extraordinarily dedicated to his vocation, extremely loyal to the Prep, and a wonderful friend to anyone who has come to know him. He is a true Franciscan.

THE ANNUAL MASS OF REMEMBRANCE We Remember and we Pray

The Banners of Honor

On Sunday, November 5th, alumni, family and friends gathered at the Prep for the blessing of the latest additions of memorial bricks and benches on the Pathway to St. Francis in conjunction with the Annual Alumni Memorial Mass (celebrated by Rev. Mark Simmons, SFP Chaplain). Following Mass, alumni and family members gathered in the Gym for the Raising of the “Banners of Honor” in honor of Teresa C. Cain & Neal Wasserfall. Brunch followed. SFP’s Alumni Director Bro. Robert Kent, O.S.F., said “It is the tradition of the Catholic Church to celebrate a Mass of Remembrance on the first weekend of November.” He added, “It’s a wonderful time for us to come together as a Prep community and remember all those who we have lost during the past year.” 12

Prior to the start of Mass, several student recipients of named/ memorial scholarships and grants took part in a ceremonial presentation with their families and the benefactors who sponsored these funds. The Pathway to St. Francis consists of more than 2,500 engraved bricks and other memorials. It is a place set aside for prayer, meditation, remembrance and gathering. The “pathway” is a beautiful way to remember your loved ones and it is a place of reflection where you can visit to honor your memories. The bricks can be personalized with names, dates and/or other special messages. Named and Memorial Scholarship Presentations Our heartfelt thanks to those who have established these funds and whose generosity continues this legacy. St. Francis Prep welcomes the establishment of named, permanently endowed scholarship funds “in memory” or “in honor” of the individual(s) or family named. Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City Since 2008, the Prep community (alumni, family, students, faculty, staff and administration) has gathered together to march in the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade! The parade begins at 44th Street, marching up Fifth Avenue—past many iconic landmarks including, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, The Plaza Hotel— all the way to 79th Street. Join Prep students, alumni, faculty, staff and administrators for this wonderful tradition! In recognition of our 25th Anniversary Golf Classic, we added an exciting new feature. The Masters Raffle provided the winner two badges to attend The Masters Golf Tournament live-and-in-person in Augusta, Georgia on either Friday, April 12, Saturday, April 13 or Sunday, April 14, 2019. SFP Night at Citi Field • May 15th The SFP Chamber Choir, under the direction of David Kobayashi '93, performed "The Star Spangled Banner" as well as "O' Canada" at Citi Field prior to the Mets vs. Toronto Bluejays on May 15th. Assistant Principal, Chris Mendolia '87 threw out the first pitch. Hundreds of alumni, parents and students purchased game tickets!

SFP Night at Citi Field • July 23rd

On Monday, July 23, 2018, Prep Alumni, Family and their friends attended a game at Citi Field as the NY Mets played the San Diego Padres. The seats were located in the “Big Apple” section beyond the centerfield wall (Section 140). Prior to the game everyone enjoyed a private party in the Bullpen Plaza adjacent to the NY Mets bullpen. The refreshments were available from 6:10 PM - 9:10 and we were able to move from the plaza to the seats. (The menu included peanuts, popcorn, Tuscan salad, tortilla chips and salsa, Nathan’s hot dogs, burgers, cookies, domestic and premium beer, soda and bottled water.) 2017 Homecoming Weekend Highlights Hoops Tournament in Memory of Jimmy ‘79 & James Prendergast H’11 Homecoming Weekend began with a Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament on Thursday, October 19th in the Prep’s Gym. More than 125 alumni, friends and family participated. This year the foul shot contest was held in memory of Brian K. O’Connor ‘86. (The O’Connor family is pictured below with Sean Prendergast '80.) Refreshments were served in the cafeteria and there were an abudance of raffle prizes!

Annual Day at Belmont Racetrack Alumni, family and friends gathered in the exclusive Turf and Field Club at Belmont Park on the 21st of October for the Annual Homecoming Day at the Races. The weather was wonderful and all of the races were exciting. Our group gathered in Winner’s Circle to meet the jockey— Angel Arroyo— who rode the winning horse—EJ’s Legacy— in the race dedicated to St. Francis Prep. (See image below.) In addition to the excitement of some lucky bets, one fortunate guest took home the proceeds of our 50/50 Raffle.

Annual 5K Fun Run in Honor of Our 9/11 Heroes and Coach James McHugh H’92

The 5K Fun Run is a perennial favorite and offers the Prep community a chance to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11. This year we also honored our legendary Track Coach, James McHugh H‘92! There were special awards and prizes for the top overall finishers (males & female) in several age categories. A buffet breakfast was served during the ceremony. In addition to our gratitude to the SFP Alumni Board, we offer special thanks to the members of the FDNY, Coach Jim May ‘76 and the SFP Girls Track Team for all of their help putting this event together.

Friends of SFP Football 2nd Annual Casino Night Remembering Royce Mulholland ‘79 On Friday, October 20th, The Friends of St. Francis Football gathered at Bourbon Street in Bayside to tribute to Royce Mulholland ‘79, a loyal alumnus and true friend of the SFP football program. Royce passed away in March 2017. He was the class president, Class of ’79. Royce’s father Joseph (Class of ’46, deceased) and brother Joshua (Class of ’84) also graduated from St. Francis Prep. It was a wonderful tribute. Pictured (left) are his widow, Lauretta; mother, Dorothy and sister Raissa. It was a very successful fundraising event and all proceeds benefit The Friends of St. Franics Prep Football Fund. The fund’s mission statement is: “To afford the opportunity for selected student-athletes to obtain a Catholic High School Education at St. Francis Prep."

The Greater Washington, D.C. Area Alumni Chapter Reception Prep alumni from the Maryland, Delaware, Virginia area gathered together for the Greater Washington D.C. Area Alumni Chapter Reception on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at the Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, VA. It was another spirit-filled gathering. West Coast Alumni Reunion in Redondo Beach, CA Bob Caccamo ’59, Christie Von Roten Ellis ’91, Pat Cashin ’59, Joe Kelly ’59 Dennis Esposito ’60, Tara Murphy Gonzales ’95, and Mia Tomicick Severson ‘83 organized a wonderful west coast SFP Alumni Reunion that drew Prep alumni from all parts of the country. They gathered in Redondo Beach, CA for several informal gatherings, happy hours, shopping, “beach bumming” and waterfront exploring. It began with a Happy Hour on October 27th. The dinner gathering on October 28th was the official reunion activity. Below are photos of the special gathering. The Greater Philadelphia Area Alumni Chapter On Thursday, September 17th, Alumni from the greater Philadelphia area enjoyed a unique fourcourse extraordinary dining experience prepared by up and coming culinary students at JNA Institute of Culinary Arts (on South Broad Street). The seven table dining room is fashioned after a quaint European terrace with water features and it was the ideal venue for our group. Cuisines included Fusion, Eclectic, and Contemporary American. Everyone had an enjoyable time and a delicious dinner! Special thanks to our chapter coordinators, Daniel Sosa ’96 and Moises Young ‘96 for their leadership and dedication to the Prep.

On Thursday, April 12, 2018 St. Francis Prep Alumni from Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and several from the New York area all convened in the heart of Beantown for a “meet up” at Bar Louie in Boston. It was a wonderful pre-game gathering followed by the Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park. Prep’s Alumni Director and Baseball Coach, Bro. Robert Kent participated in a pre-game ceremony at home plate in recognition of his 50th Anniversary Jubilee. There was a short rain delay, but the game continued and did not dampen the spirit of our alumni. This event idea was well-recieved and plans are in the works to repeat events like this in Boston and other area alumni chapters.

St. Francis Prep’s 2nd annual networking event for alumni who are involved in technology featured guest speaker, Salvatore Petronella ‘85, Vice President, Core Digital Talent. The evening featured a presentation followed by a moderated Q&A themed “Future-Proof Your IT Career”. The event was held at Marbella Restaurant on Northern Boulevard in Bayside. We are grateful to Jane Scandurra ‘77, Technology Chapter Lead for coordinating the event.

On Monday, March 19th, St. Francis Prep held it’s 4th annual reception for alumni who work in the Arts or in the Creative Marketing arena (film, TV, photography, design, painting, drawing, theatre, dancing, music, architecture, fashion, advertising, marketing, etc.). 5th Annual SFP Education Alumni Chapter Reception Chapter coordinators Kathleen A. Mackin-Sciortino ‘76 and Dominick J. Vulpis ‘74 organized another well-attended Education Alumni Chapter event at Donovan’s of Bayside on May 3, 2018! Participants ranged from recent graduates to veteran teachers and administrators. Prep’s President, Brother Leonard Conway spoke about the exciting changes taking place at St. Francis Prep. Alumni in all areas of education are invited to the next reception taking place in September 2019.

The Financial Services Sector Alumni Chapter Reception On Thursday evening, June 7th we held our annual reception for alumni in the financial service sector at the Friar’s Club in Midtown. This year we invited a special guest speaker for the evening: Eric Gioia, SFP Class of 1991, who is a Managing Director with JPMorgan Chase & Co. He also served for eight years as a member of the New York City Council from the 26th District. Eric provided his unique perspective on the current state of the Financial Services Industry. We also had several students from the SFP Wall Street Club who were there to network with alumni.

Annual Spring Reunion & Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Saturday, April 21, 2018 • The Annual Spring Reunion and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony once again provided a great opportunity for alumni to remember the reasons why so many of us found a “second home” and made life-long friendships! The reunion anniversary Classes of 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968 were recognized as the newest members of the Golden Terrier Society— an honor bestowed upon alumni who have celebrated the 50th, 55th, 60th, 65th and 70th anniversary of their graduation. The group was presented with special medals and enjoyed their cocktails and dinner in the library. The 25th Silver Anniversary Class of 1993 along with the Classes of 1988, 1983, 1978 and 1973 gathered in the cafeteria. It truly was a night of “golden” memories for everyone! The Campaign for St. Francis Prep The Next 150 Prep’s Food Service Provider Donates $500,000 in Support of the Modernization Program For the past several years, St. Francis Prep has been engaged in a Capital Improvement and Modernization Program which is funded by “The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150”. This program has resulted in very modern and attractive teaching and learning facilities for our students. (See below for more details.) In keeping with the improvements we have been making to the Prep, we are currently in the process of planning a complete renovation for our cafeteria. The cafeteria has been in constant use since the building first opened in 1964. It has been the site of thousands of student lunches, special events and alumni reunions. And, despite our diligent maintenance over the years, it is now in dire need of a full upgrade.

Group USA to “partner” with us on this major project by becoming the principal underwriting sponsor with a gift of $100,000 each year for the next five years ($500,000). We are very grateful to Mr. Thomas R. Class Of 1987’s Julie Chen Establishes A Special Scholarship Fund At The School To Help Students With The Cost Of Their Tuition Julie Chen, St. Francis Prep Class of 1987, has agreed to make a very generous donation of $250,000 to establish a permanent scholarship fund that will assist deserving girls who may otherwise find it difficult financially to attend the Prep. The Julie Chen ’87 Scholarship Fund at St. Francis Prep will be a permanent fund whose annual income will provide for grants to be made each year. The first of these awards will be presented to selected students for the 2018-19 school year.

On Tuesday afternoon, December 19, Prep had a special visit from Julie Chen, Class of 1987 and CBS television host of the popular programs Big Brother and The Talk. Julie was filming a special personal interview session with NY1 and their weekly program Spotlight NY and she requested that the filming take place at St. Francis Prep.

A Message from Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F., Alumni Director Dear Alumni and Friends, Unfortunately, we must begin our annual Grad News on a sad and somber note, announcing the passing of iconic and legendary basketball coach, Tim Leary ‘63. Tim’s career as Terrier head coach spanned 43 years, and during that extensive period he succeeded in winning a total of 646 games, a truly remarkable accomplishment. He held the records for the seventh most wins in New York state history and second most wins all-time in the city’s Catholic League, just behind Jack Curran of Archbishop Molloy. Sal Fischetti paid Tim Leary the ultimate compliment when he proclaimed: “You can talk about legendary coaches – there are a lot of them – but he definitely has to be on the top of the list in terms of the best high school coaches around.” Needless to say, Tim Leary had many things of which to be proud in his long career as player, coach, teacher, husband, parent, and grandparent. Let us salute and acknowledge a man who will always be remembered and revered through the years by the Prep Community as a true Franciscan. May he rest in peace! Several weeks ago, the Class of 2018 joined the alumni ranks of St. Francis Prep. Not only did 100% of our seniors graduate in June, but also 99.3% of them will attend a college of their choice in the fall. Members of the Class of 2018 have been accepted to more than 350 colleges and universities, including Notre Dame, Harvard, UPenn, Cornell, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Michigan, Macauley Honors at CUNY, and many other prestigious institutions. They have been offered over $150 million in college merit scholarships over the next four years. For more than 159 years, St. Francis Prep has remained true to the Franciscan tradition of peace, love, and respect for the individual, community, and environment, making these traditions the fundamental building blocks upon which a strong institution can endure in the contemporary world. Throughout its history the abilities and talents of the Prep students have been nurtured and strengthened in an environment centered on academic excellence and the teachings of Jesus Christ. The total interactive academic, spiritual, and social component parts that define the environment have been handed down as a legacy from its very beginning in 1858. The Class of 2018 will depart from within these walls and take with them the interior spirit of this tradition as an integral part of their lives in future years. It will help them to cope with all the challenges they will face as they journey forth in the world before them.

I would like to take the time to recognize some special individuals who have made such considerable contributions to our Prep Community and who are now retiring this summer. Let us bid a fond farewell to Andrea Ferranti for her 22 years of service in Programming; Robert Guthenburg for his 42 years of service in the Mathematics Department; and from our English Department Stephen Marino, Ph.D., for his 42 years, Jane Lynch for her 40 years, and Joseph Masselli for his 46 years of service. We also wish to salute George Anne Kotowicz for her 15 years of service in Campus Ministry and Kathy Carroll for her 26 years of service in the Medical Office. All together, this represents a combined total of 233 years of service to the Prep! We salute all of you for your commitment and many years of loyal service. It will continue on Friday, October 19th with the Friends of SFP Football Event at Bourbon Street in Bayside. This will be followed on Saturday, October 20th, with a Day at the Races at Belmont Park in the Turf and Field Club. Finally, on Sunday, October 21st, we will first offer our 5K Run in honor of our September 11th heroes, and then offer our Homecoming Football game against Holy Trinity High School at 1:30 p.m. at Martin Van Buren High School. In all these events, your support and presence will be invaluable, making a clear and powerful statement to all that you care deeply for your alma mater. As we move forward into the next 160 years and welcome our new Frosh, the

Class of 2022, we invite our Alumni, Benefactors, and Friends to be a part of this journey. Leave time in your busy lives to remember your roots and share your lives with us. Andrea Ferranti Ms. Andrea Ferranti recently retired as our Director of Programming. Andrea worked at St. Francis Prep in a variety of capacities for many years; she finished her time at St. Francis as the Director of Programming for the past 11 years. "Every year, I was amazed with how efficiently Andrea programmed 2,500 students. In any school that would be an amazing feat. At St. Francis, it is even more impressive given the large number of electives we offer and the rotating schedule. But Andrea always made it work." said Dr. Joseph Castellano, Asst. Principal. Ralph comes to us from St. Margaret’s Church in Middle Village and will be residing at Holy Family in Flushing. He grew up in Good Shepherd parish, Marine Park, where he was very involved in ministry. He holds a bachelor’s in philosophy from St. John’s University; a master’s in theology from St. Joseph Seminary and a master of divinity degree and the degree of bachelor of sacred theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. Vietnam POW reconnects with Hall of Famer Joe Torre, ahead of All-Star Game By Lucas Tomlinson | Fox News It’s been 49 years since Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game was played in the nation’s capital, but even longer since Navy Capt. Richard “Dick” Tangeman (SFP Class of 1958) spoke at length to his childhood classmate from Brooklyn, Hall of Fame New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre. One day before the All-Star Game at Nationals Park (8 p.m. ET Tuesday on Fox), Tangeman and Torre reconnected before a scheduled luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. Tangeman, a Vietnam veteran who endured torture and isolation during five years in captivity as a P.O.W., greeted his old friend by walking over with his hand extended.

Torre, having none of it, gave him a big hug instead.“When I found out you were going to be here, your face stuck out to me because there was a picture [I found] of our grade. It was wild,” Torre said. “Because I’m handsome?” Tangeman quipped. “What else could it be? We went to grade school together,” Torre told his friends. I always felt baseball is the game of life. You play it every day. You have to eliminate highs and lows, and when you fall down, you have to get up and keep moving.’ The two former classmates played baseball together at St. Francis Prep in Brooklyn. Tangeman said his teammate and future Hall of Famer was “always very kind, strong

and quiet.” Tangeman called Torre a “very humble” teammate despite a .752 batting average and 14 homers in only 16 games. Torre would go on to play for 18 seasons in the major leagues beginning at age 19, spending half his playing career as an all-star. He spent another 29 years as a manager, including winning four World Series Championships as Yankees manager. Tangeman took a different path. After high school, he went to college nearby at N.Y.U and later become a naval aviator. Tangeman flew over 40 combat missions from the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise into North Vietnam. On May 5th, 1968, Tangeman’s RA-5C Vigilante reconnaissance jet was shot down by anti-aircraft fire 200 miles south of Hanoi in Ha Tinh Province near the border with Laos. Tangeman, the 25-year-old navigator, ejected along with the pilot, Lt. Giles Norrington. Both would survive and become prisoners of war. Tangeman’s wife Lori said her husband had already been accepted to medical school at the University of Florida and had extended his time onboard Enterprise when he was shot down. Tangeman said after parachuting down, he was marched for 13 days north to Hanoi, the beginning of nearly five years in captivity, including time spent at the notorious Hanoi Hilton. Tangeman credits his years playing baseball to helping him survive repeated torture. “You need resilience, sharp leaders,” Tangeman told Fox News. “No matter what happens, come back fighting just as hard the next day. It’s like you lost the game before and then you come back tomorrow.” In 1969, the North Vietnamese allowed their American prisoners to attend Christmas Mass, Tangeman recalled. Despite fearing special treatment, a violation of the U.S. military’s Code of Conduct, which instructs prisoners to accept “neither parole nor special favors from the enemy,” Tangeman attended the service in order to learn the names of other P.O.Ws.

“They lost complete control at communion time because Catholics are used to running to the rail for communion, and there, we exchanged names.” Tangeman says his faith in God kept him alive. “I said prayers all the time,” he recalled. Tangeman also credits his fellow prisoners, many with advanced degrees, for sharing their expertise. During this period, he was completely isolated from news of back home, including his childhood friend’s success. Asked if he knew Joe Torre won the National League’s MVP award in 1971, Tangeman replied, “I didn’t know for a while that we were on the moon.” In 1973, nearly 600 American P.O.W.s returned home from Vietnam. Major League Baseball presented each with a “golden ticket” to see any regular season game in any stadium across the United States (including a guest) free of charge—with no expiration date. “It was great. It was a shock. It even came in a nice leather case,” said Tangeman. Tangeman used the pass to reconnect with his young son, Derek, born before Tangeman deployed to Vietnam. “We used to drive three hours down to Atlanta and go to see the games,” Tangeman recalled. While catching up with his old classmate from Brooklyn, Torre was asked why baseball brings people together. “I always felt baseball is the game of life,” Torre said. “You play it every day. You have to eliminate highs and lows, and when you fall down, you have to get up and keep moving.”

Bob Torre '61 Reminisces about "SFP Brooklyn Days" Bob Torre often tells the story of how he went from Bensonhurst to Lynbrook to Williamsburgh and St. Francis Prep. Recently he shared this anecdote about how he came to lead the Bergen County Pipes and Drums in NYC's St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2012. "I first marched in the St. Patrick’s Parade in 1958 at the Prep, then with the army reserves, the 42nd Division, 69th Infantry (also known as 'The Fighting 69th')." And 54 years later he was back. Remembering Coach

Tim Leary, Class of 1963

After a battle with cancer, the Prep lost another legend on February 13, 2018--one year after he coached his final home game. For 43 years, Coach Leary was on the sidelines and had amassed a staggering 646 victories — the second-most among Catholic school coaches and seventh-most among all coaches, public or private, in state history.

Ed Woods ‘73 enjoyed a long career in Information Technology in the Financial Services sector before returning to St. Francis Prep to teach Math in 2009. Within a year’s time, he jumped back into a role he was familiar with: serving as the Director of Information Technology, where he oversaw the school’s student information system and overall technology infrastructure. Ed also administered the emergency phone broadcast message system. He was appreciated by students and faculty because it was his voice we all heard announcing snow related school closings! Ed also coached both the Boys and Girls Track Team at different points in his tenure. This June, Ed retired from Prep, but won’t be idle. An avid runner and outdoors-man, he’s looking forward to spending more time traveling and hiking mountain trails (both near and far) with his wife, Maura, and four adult children.

Jodi Passarella Madden ‘77 and Mike Madden '77 Put their Franciscan Values into Action

As a player, he helped lead the Terriers to the 1963 Catholic High School Athletic Association city championship game, losing to Power Memorial and star Lew Alcindor — who would later change his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. A few years later, Leary was hired by SFP to coach not just the junior varsity basketball team, but varsity baseball as well. Over 10 years on the diamond, Leary his teams won 199 games, five Queens titles and a city championship. In 1973, Tim was appointed the varsity basketball head coaching position, where he quickly earned a reputation for his acumen and his devotion to his players and fellow coaches. In 1992 Coach Leary “avenged his loss” in the city title game, and delivered St. Francis Prep its first CHSAA championship in 35 years. Upon his retirement last February, Prep honored him with a lengthy ceremony before his final home game. Dozens of former players, parents and local basketball fans returned to pay tribute to this beloved man and coach. Coach Leary was also a teacher and administrator for 30 years. He was the proud father of Kristen (Dan), Brian (Dorothy), Tara (Tori), and Timothy (Kelli); grandfather, of Rebecca, Daniel, Aidan, Jack, Grace, Mairead and Tatum; brother of Billy, Kevin and Danny Leary and a devoted husband to his late wife, Claudia.

For nearly 40 years Jodi Passarella Madden '77 has worked for the global biopharmaceutical company, Bristol-Myers Squibb. As the assistant corporate secretary to the board of directors, Jodi has many high-level responsibilities including facilitating meetings around the world and across many time zones. For the better part of a year, the company has been relocating employees in its NYC headquarters. As in many instances, it's cheaper to buy something new than pay a moving company. With the company's permission, Jodi and Mike devoted hundreds of hours of their personal time to collect, box up and identify organizations to accept the "re-purposed" office supplies which were left behind. If not for their efforts (and the company's generosity) these supplies would have ended up in a landfill. Instead, the Maddens shipped out hundreds of boxes of supplies to many deserving non-profit organizations and needy schools. SFP and some of our local Catholic grammar schools were the beneficiaries too! We are grateful to Jodi and Mike, as well as the members of the SFP Campus Ministry team and the SFP staff members who assisted in picking up, sorting and re-distributing these supplies. You all played a role in helping some organizations with tight budgets and, more importantly, prevented these items from unnecessarily adding to the landfill. Gerry Hevern ‘68 Named 2018 Family Physician of the Year Dr. Gerry Hevern, a Terrier Football standout has distinguished himself by adhering to the Franciscan values imparted at the Prep. The American Academy of Family Physicians awarded its highest honor to Gerard J. Hevern, MD, FAAFP, of Suncook, New Hampshire. Hevern was named the AAFP’s national 2018 Family Physician of the Year, which honors one outstanding American family physician who provides patients with compassionate, comprehensive care, and serves as a role model in his or her community and to other health professionals. (Founded in 1947, the American Academy of Family Physicians represents 131,400 physicians and medical students nationwide, and it is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.) As the United States finds itself amid an opioid crisis, Hevern’s unique combination of excellence and experience as a family physician, an addiction specialist, and a pain management specialist make him an ideal and timely recipient for this year’s award, which he accepted during the AAFP’s annual meeting, the Family Medicine Experience.

In addition, Hevern lectures at local and regional high schools, colleges and universities about substance abuse issues, and appears on local television programs to discuss prescription drug and alcohol abuse. Hevern also has long dedicated himself to helping children. He was a leader with the New Hampshire Youth Advocacy Project, where he provided education to foster parents about caring for children at risk for substance use disorders. As chairman of the medical advisory committee to the New Hampshire Easter Seals affiliate, he worked diligently to assist children with disabilities and special needs. Hevern currently serves on the board of directors for the Thompson Island Outward Bound School in Boston.

Since 2008, he has served as medical director of comprehensive pain management at the Elliot Hospital Pain Management Center at River’s Edge in neighboring Manchester, New Hampshire, where he employs a comprehensive treatment approach to help high-risk patients who suffer from chronic pain syndrome and addiction. Previously, Hevern served as medical director at Riverway Center for Recovery at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, where he helped develop a medical detoxification program for individuals voluntarily requesting safe detoxification from alcohol and drugs. He also served as medical director of CareUnit at Lakeshore Hospital in Manchester, where he implemented a substance abuse treatment model for the chemical dependency unit of the freestanding psychiatric hospital. And, from 1979 to 1985, he worked as a staff physician in the alcohol treatment unit of Catholic Medical Center, where he provided medical management and gave educational talks to people voluntarily admitted for help with their addiction. Hevern’s commitment to health and well-being extends beyond his practice to his community and elsewhere. He currently serves as a

Hevern lectures extensively throughout New England to audiences of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, addiction specialists, students, law enforcement and people in recovery on a variety of topics, including prescription drug misuse in the elderly, opioid and heroin withdrawal, addiction pharmacology, America’s fascination with drugs, and multi-drug overdose, to name only a few.

Hevern earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in social relations (cum laude) from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and his medical degree from the State University of New York in Stony Brook. He began his family medicine residency at the University of Western Ontario, St. Joseph’s Hospital in London, Ontario, Canada, and finished at the State University of New York’s family medicine residency program at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. He has earned many certifications related to pain and addiction medicine. Hevern is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He has the AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education. Gerry has been an active and generous supporter of St. Francis Prep and it’s Greater Boston Area Alumni Chapter! In 2011 he was inducted into the SFP Hall of Fame. In 2014 he was inducted into the Inaugural Class of the St. Francis Prep Red & Blue Terrier Ring of Honor. Congratulations, Gerry! Your life’s work is a fine reflection upon our patron, Saint Francis and serves to enhance the fine reputation of the Prep!

Every year, GHX recognizes an elite group of its customers through our GHXcellence Awards. The goal of the awards is to recognize individuals for their exceptional achievements in cutting healthcare costs by working with GHX to automate purchase orders and invoices, take control of contract spending, and increase electronic connections to trading partners. Family, Friends and Teammates Gather at Prep to Honor the Memory of Brian O’Connor ‘86 at Pre-Game Ceremony SFP hosted a pre-game ceremony retiring the basketball jersey of Brian O’Connor ‘86 on Friday February 2nd before the Boys Varsity Basketball game vs. Holy Cross. A reception followed after the game and all of Brian’s family members, teammates, classmates and friends were invited. Brian O’Connor was an incredible father/husband/brother/son/friend to so many people for so long. Those who have had the privilege to know him were the better for it. Brian exemplified the qualities that we all admire; strength, kindness, loyalty, determination, and of course, humor. Brian passed away in March 2017 at the age of 48 after fighting a long battle with Cancer. He is survived by his wife, Trisha and their three children; Nicole, Stephanie and Ryan. Christine Kelly ‘86 and Mark Smimmo ‘86 Reconnect and Marry 30 Years After Graduation Christine Kelly and Mark Smimmo from the SFP Class of 1986 were married on April 7th. The wonderful story that follows (as told by Mark) vividly illustrates why we say, “High school is four years, but St. Francis Prep is forever.”

We first “met” so to speak on “The REAL SFP Class of 1986!!!” Facebook page. Christine, living in Chandler, Arizona made a post on questioning the name of a former typing teacher at the Prep. I live in Maspeth, Queens and joined in on the comments and she recognized my last name as she knew someone with this unique name of “Smimmo”. So she messaged me asking me if I was related to them, and ironically I was! That got us talking and we realized that while we didn’t know each other in Prep (although I do remember her big hair), we did have many mutual friends. Some of these friends were from the Catholic grammar schools we attended. Christine attended Our Lady of Lourdes in Queens Village and I attended Our Lady of Hope in Middle Village. Friends included Janine Kelly, Ellen Reilly, Natalie Giarraputo, Bernadette Kamin, Linda Schifano, Joy Tumang, Johnny Santana, Leslie Orlovsky and Jim Cunningham. We continued to text from that day in November 2016 and then later we got to talking on the phone. The three hour time difference worked perfectly to allow us to

talk as Christine drove home from work each night. One day Christine told me about a beautiful place she had once visited called White Sands, New Mexico. I told her I had always wanted to visit that state so we made plans for me to visit her in Arizona in March 2017 with a road trip to White Sands included. On that trip we watched the first of our “Arizona Sunsets”. From there our love bloomed so naturally I visited Arizona a few more times. In July of 2017 Christine moved back to New York and in November we were engaged to be married. We announced that on our

class page and Johnny Santana, class of ‘86 mentioned that Jim Cunningham from our class was a priest. We decided to reach out to Fr. Jim, currently an Associate Pastor at St. Francis de Sales in Belle Harbor and he offered to unite us in Holy Matrimony. Many thanks to Doris Milevo ‘86 for creating the Prep Facebook page that brought us together, Lisa Kowalinksi ’86 who helped tremendously with our ceremony & reception design, and to Fr. Jim who made us Husband and Wife.

Jacqueline Guenego '84 Elected to Town Council in Haworth, N.J. On Sunday, January 7th SFP Class of 1984 alumna, Jacqueline Guenego was sworn in as Town Councilwoman in Haworth, NJ (Bergen County). After graduating from St. Francis Prep, Jackie went on to study at Queens College, graduating magna cum laude in 1988. She went on to Fordham University Law School where she earned her J.D. and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1994. Kelly Fitzpatrick-Mullahy ‘91 Inducted into the GCHSAA Hall of Fame Congratulations to Kelly Fitzpatrick-Mullahy! She was inducted into the Girls Catholic High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame on April 19, 2018 at a ceremony at Russo’s on the Bay, Howard Beach. As a Prep student athlete she excelled as a basketball player and as a member of the cross country and track and field teams. Kelly earned three varsity letters with basketball and ten varsity letters in cross country and track & field. She was selected First team All-City and First team All Brooklyn/Queens and was a 1,000 point scorer in basketball. Kelly was also selected First Team All Brooklyn/Queens in Cross Country and Track & Field twice for the 800 meter run and high jump! After graduating from Prep, she attended Fordham University on a basketball scholarship and was part of the 1993-94 team that appeared in the NCAA Tournament. She played international professional basketball and is currently the Director of International Partnerships and Strategy at WWE. Kelly is married to Brendan Mullahy '91, a Prep classmate and they have three wonderful children!

Jack Allen '93 and Fr. Bill Sweeney H '03 Serve as Deputy Grand Marshals in rd 43 Annual Rockaway St. Patrick's Day Parade In honor of their exemplary leadership roles and positive impact in the Rockway communities, the 43rd Annual Rockaway St. Patrick’s Day Parade committee chose a great group of honorees to serve as Deputy Grand Marshals this year. Among them were two folks with ties to St. Francis Prep: Father Bill Sweeney H'03 (our former school Chaplain who is currently as the Pastor at St. Francis de Sales) and Jack Allen, SFP Class of 1993. Jack is a Major and Commanding Officer for the New York County Criminal Court. The honorees were celebrated at the Gala Installation Ball on February 17th. Congratulations Bill and Jack!! SFP Class of 1991's John Aherne, OFM, was ordained to the priesthood on June 23 at St. Francis of Assisi Church on West 31st Street. John, joined Holy Name Province’s postulancy program in 2010 and professed his first vows in 2012. Over the last few years, he has ministered at Sacred Heart Parish in Tampa, Fla., and at St. Anthony Shrine, in Boston, and he has worked with various communities — veterans at Walter Reed Medical Center, persons with intellectual disabilities and the poor. He professed solemn vows in August 2016 and in June 2017, he was ordained a transitional deacon. Before joining Holy Name Province, he worked at several publishing companies and also ran a small dancing school. John, who earned a bachelor’s degree in English from NYU and is a certified Irish dance teacher, lives in Chicago, where he is finishing studies at Catholic Theological Union for a Master of Divinity degree. “I have always felt called to the priesthood... I can think of no better way to serve God than to be present with people at these moments of life and share the sacraments with them,” said John, adding that “being able to celebrate the sacraments with people strikes me as a tremendous privilege.” Jack’s first job after graduating from St.

The George Dillman ‘00 Memorial Scholarship Fund George Dillman, SFP Class of 2000, was an employee of Con Edison performing routine electrical maintenance work when he was killed in a job related accident in 2008. His colleagues at Con Ed, together with friends and family members, organized an annual golf outing in his memory. Each year the event proceeds, along with other donations, are directed to the George Dillman ‘00 Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Prep. The May 2018 outing held at Douglaston Golf Course raised $8,000 for the fund and this will be “matched” by Con Edison.

Keith Powers ‘01 won the Democratic nomination for New York City Council District 4 and went on to win the general election and took the place of Councilman Dan Garodnick on January 1, 2018. Keith received his B.A. in political science from the University of Dayton in 2005 and his M.A. in political science from the City College of New York Graduate Center in 2013. From November 2006 to January 2011, Powers served as the Chief of Staff for New York State Assembly member Johnathan Bing. He worked as the Campaign Manager for New York State Senator Liz Krueger during her 2006 campaign. Since January 2011 he has served as the Chair of the Business Affairs Committee of Community Board Six. From January 2011 to the start of his campaign in April 2017, he was the Vice President of Constantinople & Vallone Consulting, a government relations consulting firm. Congratulations, Keith!

Markos Papadatos ‘03 was inducted into the Hellenic News Hall of Fame which honors Greek-Americans. On November 12, 2017, the acclaimed journalist and editor was honored at their GALA awards ceremony which was held at The Merion in Cinnaminson, NJ. The Hellenic News of America is one of the country’s largest bilingual Greek-American newspaper and online publications. Markos proudly included a mention of the great education received at Prep in his acceptance remarks. In an email message to Patrick McLaughlin, and Dr. Joe Castellano Prep's Principal and Assistant Principal respectively, he said, “It all started in SFP! Thank you both for your support for the past 17 years since I was a student.” Congratulations, Markos!

Christian Guthenberg ‘18 said it was a really interesting experience seeing his grandfather (Mr. Bob Guthenberg) in school everyday. What makes it even sweeter is the fact that he graduated at the same time his grandfather retired (after 42 years of teaching math). Bro. Robert Kent (a friend and former colleague in the Math Department) joked, “What is the probability that a faculty member would retire at the same time his grandson graduates?” The media picked up on the story's "poetic value" because Bob taught statistics! Christian joins the "Guthenberg Prep family" consisting of Michael '94, Christina '98, Ann '01 (RIP), and Kathleen '03! Christian will be studying at St. John's University. Terrier Basketball’s Emily Engstler ‘18 Commits to the Syracuse Orange

After the last class bell sounded on October 19th, throngs of students poured into the Prep’s gym. There was a palpable buzz of excitement as a crowd of more than 100 friends, classmates, teammates, coaches and family stood in excited anticipation of learning what the athletic and academic future of Emily Engstler ’18 would hold. Engstler, the 6-foot-2 senior at St. Francis Prep has racked up scores of Division I offers, including her top three -- Syracuse, Ohio State and Miami. She is recognized as one of the most versatile prospects in the 2018 class. Congratulations, Emily!

The retirement of a special teacher/coach/staff member is watershed event for a generation of students. We associate our favorite teachers with the excitement of our youth—a time when the days of each year were only structured from September until June. They provided us with understanding, affirmation and inspiration to become who we are today. They instilled the joy of learning and faith in us. They helped shape our lives. This year is unique in that we celebrate the culmination of the careers of these four esteemed, veteran faculty and staff members whose combined length of service is 182 years. Each brought their own very unique style and personality to the Prep community. We wish them a fond farewell and look forward to keeping up with them at alumni reunions and through social media. Their individual legacies are far too complex to be expressed in a short biographical sketch. Therefore, we thought that it would be far more meaningful to share “your words” — some of the comments from the retirement announcements that were posted on the St. Francis Preparatory School Facebook page. Lisa Schulz '90 I had her for Freshman and Sophomore year. She started the trend of amazing English teachers I had at the Prep. Nothing made me happier than when I got my sophomore schedule and saw that I had her again.

Suzanne Elaine Schimatz '93 Thank you so much Jane Lynch Barricelli for being one of the best teachers I’ve ever had, and for being a sweet, kind caring person who so obviously truly loved teaching..... and all of us. You treated your students like we were your own kids- and you were exactly the kind of teacher we would all hope and expect to find in a Catholic school. A lot of students got through freshman year because of your kindness and empathy and I hope you know how much that will always be remembered and appreciated. My memories of Mr. Masselli are all from a championship season of varsity baseball years ago. It was my senior year and Mr. Masselli’s first season assisting with whatever needed to get done to help us all succeed. As unofficial team photographer he expertly chronicled in pictures our ups and downs. His fiery leadership will never be forgotten. Victoria Girardin '14 The absolute best. The way he taught A Streetcar Named Desire made it my favorite piece of writing to this day five years later. Jack Monaghan '54 John Patrick “Jack” Monaghan, passed away on September 6, 2017 at the age of 82. He was a member of the Prep faculty from 1956-1970 and taught English and served as the Speech and Debate coach. He also coached football and Varsity (B) basketball. During the summers he worked as a cook at Camp Alvernia in Centerport. He was inducted into the SFP Hall of Fame. Jack’s first job after graduating from St. Francis College in Brooklyn was writing for NBC. He started as a college intern and was offered a full-time job writing news, special events and sports, primarily for radio. Much as he enjoyed it, something was missing that he discovered through teaching and the connection he made with students in a classroom. He earned a master’s degree at Columbia University and came close to completing a doctoral degree at New York University. Several years later, NYU bestowed an honorary doctorate on Jack. In retirement, Jack lived on Shelter Island and was asked to participate in the local high school mentoring program, and that subsequently led him to become a substitute teacher and assisting with the annual school play.

Harold Kelly was a dedicated and spirited long-time member of the Alumni Board and a graduate of the Prep Class of 1956. He attended so many of the Prep's annual alumni events, and he did so consistently year after year. Harold was a "regular" at the Annual Homecoming Day at Belmont Racetrack where always could be seen donning his distinctive "kelly green" Masters golf sport jacket complimented by a panama-style hat. He also attended the Annual Florida Alumni Reunions where he so often made new friends while keeping up with his peers and classmates. At the Annual June Golf Classic, Harold would often be found working the registration desk or presiding over the "betting hole". In sum, Harold was a hardworking, dedicated alumni volunteer and always fun to be around. Alumni Board President, Wally Bishop said, "He was always willing to help the Prep in whatever way he could and did it with such great joy." Harold was devoted husband of the late Catherine and beloved father of Christopher (Julie), and Michael (Alison). Cherished grandfather of Meaghan, and Kate. Loving brother of Sr. Mary Louise Kelly, C.I.J. and Robert (Barbara).

Lou Marino '52 passed away on July 22, 2018 in Canyon County, California. He started his own copier business in 1968 from his garage with $500 and the unwavering support of his wife of 58 years, Lucille. With hard work, dedication and later, the entry of his son into the business, he built it into a very successful enterprise. That success allowed him to travel, coach Little League and spend time supporting the youth charities he loved so much. He loved people. And, he took great pleasure in playing Santa Claus at the LA Children's Hospital, the YMCA and later visiting shut-ins with St. Vincent de Paul's Meals on Wheels. On every occasion he impressed on each child the importance of gratitude because he knew it to knew it to be the roots of happiness. Lou often spoke about growing up poor in Brooklyn and regaled in the "advantage" he had over others because of that upbringing. He loved his family and in spite of the demands of operating his own business, he was always home at 6:15 pm for dinner. He also loved St. Francis. For decades he proudly wore his St. Francis Prep ring and would proclaim the blessings of a Catholic school education. He even saw to it that each of his grandchildren had those same blessings. He kept a statue of St. Francis, in his home and office. In 2009, he took his family to Assisi and fulfilled a lifelong quest of his. During the Prep's 150th Anniversary, Lou made a very generous gift to The Campaign for St. Francis Prep that is being earmarked for the construction of the The Lucille and Lou E. Marino '52 Orchestra Room.

We are deeply saddened to share that our much loved Alumni Board member and friend, Jean Coppola '82, passed away on Sunday October 29, 2017 after a year-long battle with cancer. She was a professor of information technology at Pace University for over 30 years. She was also a recognized leader in the emerging field of gerontechnology research, defined as the study of technology to promote the cognitive health of older adults. She won numerous awards, received significant press coverage, and granted modest research monies for her work. She was also one of the first members of the Pace University Community to receive the Jefferson Bronze Medal Award for sustained commitment to community service. She was a dedicated member of the Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament and St. Mel's Church Choirs. Jean was also an active and talented athlete playing softball in a few different leagues. In softball as well in her professional career, Jean was always a mentor and friend who encouraged others to get involved and hone their skills. As a student at Prep, she played in the Concert Band, Marching Band and the Orchestra. She was a member of the National Honor Society, and worked on the Seraph Newspaper, and was involved in the Science Talent Search. As an alumna, Jean volunteered to assist SFP faculty members with techbolgy, participated in the Career Day for students and always organized the SFP Golf Classic raffle drawing with great skill. In 2016, Jean was inducted into the St. Francis Prep Hall of Fame.

As we were going to press, we were informed of the passing of Catherine Lynch, loving wife of Daniel F. Lynch, SFP Class of ’47, and the matriarch of the well known and esteemed Lynch clan which includes, among many others, Prep grads and children Barbara Lynch McManus ’79, the late Michael F. Lynch ’86, and grandchildren Michael F. Lynch ’16, John R. Lynch ’19 and Michaela McManus ’20. May she rest in peace!

The Pathway to St. Francis Undergoes an Expansion and Beautification The “Pathway to St. Francis” project is a brick walkway around the statue of St. Francis in front of the school at the intersection of Francis Lewis Boulevard and Horace Harding Expressway. Over the past decade, hundreds of bricks and other memorials have been purchased to honor the special people and memories. A major expansion and renovation of the pathway has been completed this past summer. (See images below.) This will allow for many more memorials in the future.
