A Message from the President

Dear Graduates and Friends, As I assume my new role as President of St. Francis Prep (my 42nd year at the school), I am looking forward to working with you, our loyal alumni and friends, as we begin the next chapter in the Prep’s illustrious 155 year history. As President, much of my work will involve fostering our mission, fundraising, admissions, finances and other business components of the school. Mr. Patrick McLaughlin, Class of 1973 and long-time Assistant Principal, takes over as Principal and will oversee the academic and day-today operations of the school. This new administrative structure represents a natural “next step” for us, and it coincides with our ongoing “Master Plan for Modernization” as well as The Campaign for St. Francis Prep which continues under the leadership of our Campaign Chairman, Mr. John J. Brown, Class of 1976. The next phase of the Master Plan (Phase III) calls for the construction of a new Science and Music Complex. We recently cleared all the zoning hurdles—receiving final approval from the City Council in August— and we are now putting together the financing arrangements and reviewing construction bids with the hope that we will break ground for the new science and music facilities next June 2014. Earlier phases of the Master Plan enabled us to upgrade the school’s infrastructure and establish state-of-the-art Physical Education and Art Education Centers that are second to none. Consequently, our dream of vastly improved facilities is truly becoming a reality thanks to the careful planning and foresight of the Board of Trustees, the wonderful generosity of our alumni and benefactors, and the help and cooperation of our extraordinarily dedicated faculty and staff.

Thankfully, the Prep remains stable in terms of enrollment. Despite some ongoing economic uncertainty, the increased competition that we face, and the smaller “pool” of eighth-grade students, we continue to be the largest private, non-diocesan, Catholic high school in the country--with a tremendously diverse student population of more than 2600 young men and women who truly reflect our great city. More than 99% of our seniors go on to college each year, including many of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country, and the members of our most recent Class of 2013 received over $96 million in scholarship offers. This speaks volumes about the high quality, value-oriented education that we continue to provide for our students each and every year—in keeping with our Franciscan mission. As you read through these Grad News pages, you will be reminded of the numerous events and activities that keep you connected with the Prep. And as you do, please remember, we could not do all the wonderful things we do for our students without your help and support! Thank you again and God bless you! Its a tradition that dates back to the days when SFP was located in Brooklyn. The Annual

Principal’s Dinner for Key Benefactors, Trustees & Administrators Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. hosted the Annual Principal’s Dinner on Saturday, April, 6, 2013 in the Prep’s library. More than 150 guests were in attendance. This annual event is the Prep’s salute to the loyal alumni, parents, faculty, staff and friends whose generosity at the “leadership” giving level helped St. Francis Prep in many wonderful ways during the past year. As alumni dined, Bro. Leonard delivered an update on all of the latest developments, awards and achievements at the Prep. During dinner, Sal Cocchiaro ‘13, and Aishvarya Aura ‘13 spoke about their wonderful experiences at Prep and all that SFP provided them and their fellow graduates as they head off to college in the fall. The NY Daily News picked up his story because ultimately, he decided to attend Fordham University because it would enable him to continue his religious education and stay close to his family.

Aishvarya Aura ‘13 was the only student in the borough of Queens (both public and private) to be named an Intel Semi-Finalist and was featured in the Daily News and the Queens Courier. (See related story on page 39.)

Re g i o n a l C h a p t e r s Washington, D.C. Area Alumni Chapter Each year the Washington D.C. Area Alumni Chapter attracts a dynamic group to this annual reception thanks to the efforts of chapter coordinator, William Ashton ‘76. Last October more than 40 attended the reception at Bobby Van’s Steakhouse. Alumni travel from Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia to attend to rekindle old friendships and make new connections. Many alumni who are traveling on business there have also participated.

Boston Area Alumni Chapter Participants in this chapter hail from a wide range of graduating classes from recent grads who who are currently studying at local universities to alumni from the Prep’s “Brooklyn era”. They all gathered for another spirited reception in the heart of city of Boston last May for an intimate dinner gathering at Maggiano’s. Our Boston Chapter coordinator Gerry Hevern ‘68 spoke about his great fondness for St. Francis Prep and his desire to bring out alumni for other events and activities throughout the year.

An enthusiastic group of Prep Alumni from the Arizona area and beyond, over the course of a few days (March 22-24). I was a great deal of fun with friends old and new! Organized by Bob Caccamo ‘59 and fellow classmates, Friday Night featured a “N.Y. Deli Party” at Chompies in Chandler AZ, in the “Brooklyn Room”. On Saturday Night, Bob hosted a party at his home. DAY ONE: Spring Training Game and BBQ at The Dunn’s Home

Over the course of a weekend in March, alumni from across the Florida area gathered for what has become a long standing tradition. On Saturday, alumni gathered for a Met’s spring training game followed by a lovely home-cooked BBQ in the home of Joanne and Bill Dunn ‘59. More than 40 alumni and friends participated. On Sunday, over 100 alumni and friends gathered for Mass and dinner at the Fox Club in Palm City, FL for a reception hosted by generous benefactor Peter Callahan ‘59.

New York City Professional Alumni Chapters Financial Services Sector Alumni Reception

The Financial Services Sector Alumni Chapter brought together an impressive number of alumni from a variety of disciplines within the finance industry for a professional and social networking reception on May 23, 2013. The event took place at the Friars Club in midtown Manhattan and more than 50 alumni attended the reception and had an opportunity to hear about all of the latest developments at St. Francis Prep. The event cost is underwritten by Vincent Pitta ‘68, who attributes his success in life to his Franciscan elementary, secondary and college education. The Terrier Spirit was on full display as alumni collected food for those in need in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Some alumni took time out to tour the new Physical Education and Athletic Training Center as well as the new Art Education Center at Prep.

The 15th & 20th Anniversary Reunion Class Celebration on April 6, 2013 was a fine night of laughter and fond memories. The Prep’s Chamber Orchestra , under the direction of Dr. Robert Corbino, performed to everyone’s delight for the first hour. A hot buffet and open bar was served. The party lasted four hours and then many alumni continued the celebration at many of the various restaurants and pubs located on Bell Boulevard. The Annual Spring Reunion &

Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony April 27, 2013: The Annual Spring Reunion and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony once again provided a great opportunity to rediscover what made St. Francis Prep “a second home” for so many—the friends, faculty, coaches and great Terrier spirit. The Hall of Fame honors graduates who have demonstrated significant lifetime achievement and service to others. This year’s inductees were: Ed Kennedy ‘57, John Fry ‘78 and Sal Fischetti ‘83.

Photo by Mike Graziano Soon he had enough athletes to bring two S teams to the Brandeis Relays at Randall’s t Island, where both teams ran in the money I – finishing first and fourth. Before long one of o Ed’s champions set the world record for 16 1 year olds by running 220 yards in an incredible 21 seconds flat! But it was Ed’s i approach to his new flag-football league a that most reveals the secret of his successful t leadership. He organized the whole thing of l course – motivating homeroom teachers to c coach and students to play. But he did not c stop there. s

(' .(11('< ¶ 6)3 +$// 2) )$0( ,1'8&7(( Ed Kennedy was an honor student every semester, and a scholar athlete on the track team, winning an unprecedented 10 varsity letters and the first Blue Blazer in the Prep’s history. Ed led the team to 5 city championships and 4 Penn Relay championships; he anchored the Millrose Sprint-medley winners, and led off the relay team that set the National 2 mile record. Ed Kennedy is an authentic champion. He has kept leading, inspiring and instilling that championship spirit in others, throughout his life. In the mid-sixties, Harvey Cox wrote that the spiritual imperative of our time is to find out where God is working and join Him there. For some of us, like Ed, that was the inner city where poverty, turmoil and injustice reigned. So, in 1968, Ed decided to join God in East New York, “the murder capital of the world” where -- for 32 years -he taught hundreds of teenagers a better way. When Ed first arrived to teach at Berriman

Junior High School 64, he brought with him the Champion’s vision he had developed at the Prep, with the brilliant coaching of Jim McHugh H ‘92 and the enduring spirit of St. Francis. Ed saw immediately that the lack of interesting after school activities at Berriman was an invitation to trouble. Instead of complaining about the defects, Ed stepped up and created a track team, and a flag-football intramural league. He focused on giving his students the following essential elements that had made him such a great champion at the Prep: t &YUFSOBM FYQFDUBUJPOT BOE DPOĕEFODF GSPN coaches, teachers and peers, who inspired the belief that Ed could meet high standards, and, t )JT PXO JOUFSOBMJ[BUJPO PG UIPTF TUBOEBSET along with the determination and persistence to achieve them.

He generated a constant engine of motivation by attending every game and then writing a sports-page about the action, typing it up himself, mimeographing hundreds of copies, and personally handing them out to the students as they entered the school the next morning. And to complete the cycle, Ed integrated the sports-stories into the reading assignments and discussions in his English classes. That’s true educational excellence! Jack Cahill ‘57 said, “My father had the privilege of playing on the same team as Prep Hall of Famer Vince Lombardi ‘33; I had the privilege of playing on the same team as Prep Hall of Famer, Joe Torre ‘58. And there could be no greater honor, than to introduce our new Hall of Famer, Edward Kennedy!” He later added, “Every time I look at what Ed and our other classmates have achieved and reflect on their depth of character and goodness, I’m profoundly moved by the honor I feel at having had the privilege to be part of their lives at the Prep. He worked in accounting, during which time he received an MBA degree from the New York University Stern School of Business. He eventually worked in management consulting, specializing in universities.

A 2012 Forbes magazine article on him stated, “There is a man leading one of the largest private universities in the United States, and he is leading it from the front; walking the walk and making a very real difference for students, his university and those that live and work in his university’s neighborhood.�

During his tenure, the average SAT score of students rose by 63 points over 7 years, the ratio of students to faculty was lowered to 10:1 and the college created a faculty-led, student-governed College House system. On March 10, 2010, he was designated as the 14th President of

In 2011, Fry negotiated Drexel’s affiliation with America’s oldest natural history museum, The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, creating The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. In 2012, Fry announced the completion of the Drexel strategic plan for 20122017, “Transforming the Modern Urban University.�

Franklin & Marshall College, and continues today at Drexel. As a senior official at Penn, he led a remarkable change in university and community relations that ultimately transformed the neighborhood around Penn’s west Philly campus into a respectable, safe neighborhood where students, neighbors, universities and businesses thrive today. Something he continued while President at Franklin & Marshall before recently taking over as President of Drexel in the wake of the untimely death of his friend and mentor, President Constantine Papadakis, whom Fry calls, Drexel’s greatest president.�

One of Fry’s clients in consulting was the University of Pennsylvania, and when he worked for the university, Judith Rodin, the then President, hired him as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer in 1995, a position he held until 2002. At the University of Pennsylvania he helped develop the “Agenda for Excellence,� a comprehensive strategic plan covering 1996-2001, and implemented a strategy addressing challenges in the University City neighborhood to raise property values, reduce crime and attract commercial infrastructure and economic development.

He went on to St. John’s University and received his bachelors in Athletic Administration and a masters in educational administration, supervision and instructional leadership. He started teaching physical education here in 1987, coached the girls varsity basketball team from 1989 to 1996 winning the NYS class B federation championship in 1995 as well as coach of the year honors the same year. In 1991, he was appointed department chairperson of the health and physical education department and in 1998 director of athletics. As AD he serves on the executive committee of the following: New York State Catholic High School Athletic Association, New York State Catholic High School Football League, Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA, and the chairperson of the Nassau/

Suffolk Catholic High School Association Tennis League.

Athletic

In his spare time, he is the devoted husband to Denise, also an SFP grad and loving father to Jessica, Lauren and Victoria. Sal is very proud of all his coaches but especially proud of his Health and Phys Ed Teachers who he fondly calls the best department in the school. Sal works hard. On most days, he is the first one in the building and the last to leave. On weekends you’ll find him at games, matches, competitions and meets, also making the time for his own kids by attending lacrosse games, dance recitals, and coaching CYO basketball games. And of course, every weekend he will visit Target or Costco at least once. Dorothy Cassano H’10, the department secretary

Sal has developed and maintained a model athletic and physical education program. He has help build a stellar summer program for elementary school students which includes sports and academics. Sal is a model for hard work, grit and dedication. Applying this attitude to his personal life, he has lost over 100 pounds through diet and exercise during the past year and a half and was featured in Newsday as a person of the week in their Focus on Health section. In his nomination letter to the alumni board faculty member Joe Licata wrote, “The four Golden Links of a Franciscan education are all embodied in the person of Sal Fischetti. Sal cares not about the personal glory or adulation. He does everything without fanfare. He takes his job to heart and has become the epitome of what a great athletic director should be. Sal makes athletics great at SFP.� Yeats said, “education is not so much a bucket to be filled, but more of a fire to be lit. The fire he has lit burns brightly throughout our community. Dave Daly & Leo Nicholas Dave Daly, has exhibited his love and dedication to Prep students as a Track Coach and has continually supported the Prep’s Annual 5k Fun Run. HONORARY ALUMNI Peter Mazzurco & Anthony Porcasi Peter Mazzurco has four children who graduated from Prep (Lisa ‘95, Vanessa ‘99, Vincent ‘03 and Peter ‘03). He and his business partner, Anthony Porcasi, generously built, maintain and have continued to support the Pathway to St. Francis since its inception in 2003. It’s their way of giving back to the Prep and compliments of their company, Independent Landscaping Residential and Commercial Services.

HONORARY ALUMNA Patricia Brown (Postumously) Born in Brooklyn on June 12, 1959 to Marge and Jim Costello, Pat was raised in Flatbush in “Little Flower” Parish, and went on to enjoy a successful career as a Municipal Bond Trader with Dean Witter Reynolds. Pat and John Brown ‘76 (HOF 2006) were married on November 19, 1983 and remained deeply devoted to each other, their family and were active in the community.

Developing a Third Career In June of 2010 Pat earned a Certificate in Design from Metropolitan Institute of Interior Design and launched Pat Brown Interior Designs. A Blue Star Mother In late 2012, Pat became a “Blue Star Mother”, when her oldest son, Tom, entered the US Army. He is in Airborne Training School in Ft. Bragg, NC.

The Greatest Challenge Sadly, after a courageous battle with cancer, Pat passed away on November 10, 2012. Pat will always be remembered for her loving spirit, selfless giving and the abundant love she brought to everyone. Her family and friends will always remember her and cherish each precious moment they had with her.

Active in her Community Pat was a very active volunteer in her Parish and was also committed to other charitable efforts: “SCO Family of Services”, an organization that supports family life and personal wellbeing, where everyone has the opportunity to succeed; “No Greater Sacrifice” which is dedicated to children of our nation’s fallen

and wounded Service members by delivering scholarships and resources to improve their quality of life through the pursuit of higher education; “Tuesday’s Children” and of course, St. Francis Prep and others.

Family Focused: A Second “Career” After the arrival of their first daughter Caitlin in August of 1984, Pat focused on the most important career that a person could choose: that of a loving Mother. Four other children would follow: Erin in April of 1987, Tom in November of 1988, Caroline in March of 1990 and Kevin in July of 1992.

The Annual Spring Reunion The Golden Terrier Alumni Reunion and Medal Recognition Ceremony The Classes of 1963, 1958, 1953, 1948 and 1943 were recognized as the newest members of the Golden Terrier Society— an honor bestowed upon alumni who have celebrated the 50th, 55th, 60th, 65th and 70th anniversary of their graduation. The group was presented with special medals and enjoyed a festive reunion dinner in the library.

Homecoming Weekend 2012 Review & Preview of 2013 Each year Homecoming Weekend brings together alumni from all ages and backgrounds to celebrate all that is exciting and interesting about St. Francis Prep.

Homecoming 3-on-3 Tournament The “weekend” begins on Thursday evening with a Threeon-Three Basketball Tournament in memory of Jimmy Prendergast ‘79. Each year there are over a hundred alumni, members of the Prendergast family as well as friends from the neighborhood. The tournament will also honor Jimmy’s dad, James, who passed away last year. James and his wife, Joan, were recognized as honorary alumni of SFP in 2011. They have always been strong supporters of Prep. Please join members of the Prep community as we honor these two special individuals on Thursday, October 3, 2013 in the St. Francis Prep gym. As always, there will be food, drink and plenty of raffle prizes awarded.

On Friday, a Golf Outing will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013 at Clearview Golf Course in memory of Danny Apicella ‘00. This event has been very well attended since its inception in 2011! The “after party” continues at Sullivan’s in Bayside where many more alumni gather for food and drink. There are plenty of raffles and prizes and it is “standing room only.” All told, more than $16,000 was raised in support of the Scholarship Fund established in Danny’s memory.

Homecoming Night at Sullivan’s Following the Homecoming Golf Outing, a total of 160 alumni, including more than 80 friends and family of Danny Apicella ‘00, participated in last year’s night at Sullivan’s. There were plenty of raffle prizes, food and drink. Event organizers Kevin Wagner ‘01, Jonathan Pereira ‘99, and Jimmy Lynch ‘99 expressed their appreciation to everyone for supporting both the golf outing and the night at Sullivan’s in honor of their friend and fellow Prepster.

The entire student body, along with parents, alumni, friends, relatives, and our dedicated faculty and staff, set out to raise at least $250,000 this year (with $1 million projected over four years). It’s just the first piece of a major $10 million fund raising project (stage two of the overall campaign) that will continue to modernize the Prep. And not only did everyone have fun with the Walk-a-thon, we were able to surpass our goal. By the day of the event $268,000 was raised. Mass of Remembrance & Brunch Each year, during the month of November, we remember and pray for all of the deceased in our community. Together we seek strength and comfort as we continue our journey of healing and reflection. At this Mass, we pray especially for all those who we have lost during the past year. All are welcome to join us and pray for all of their beloved departed. This well-attended liturgy also provides us with an opportunity to bless the new and existing memorials on the Pathway to St. Francis as well as our Wall of Honor in the gym. After all of the ceremonies conclude, a brunch is served in the school cafeteria.

Prep Marches in the annual New York City

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

It began as an average day, but soon the rain fell and turned to sleet. Alumni, faculty and students were undeterred and marched the entire route!

Alumni, students, current and former parents, faculty, staff, administrators and members of the Franciscan Brothers Community all participated once again in the annual march up Fifth Avenue for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Marching in the parade is part of a tradition that dates back to the days when SFP was located in Brooklyn. It was revived during the Prep’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary in 2008 and has been growing stronger in both spirit and in number of participants every year since. In the aftermath of

Super Storm Sandy...

Alumni, Students, Faculty and Staff Respond to the Needs of our Community after this unprecedented storm. 160 current Prep students and more than a dozen faculty and staff members were adversely affected by Super storm Sandy when it hit the East Coast October 28-29th, 2012. Many will never forget how this powerful storm decimated coastal communities in New Jersey and left New York City powerless and Ă€RRGHG 6DGO\ WKH ÂżUVW NQRZQ VWRUP UHODWHG fatality reported in New York City was our own, Tony Laino ‘00, who was killed at about 7 p.m. when a large tree crashed through his house in Flushing. (See inside back cover.) In a wonderful testament to our Franciscan spirit, students, alumni, faculty and staff did their best to help others in their time of need in the hours, days and weeks after the historic storm that disrupted the lives of millions. We

were inspired by the many stories of Prep students, staff, faculty and alumni who went out to assist people in the community in the recovery. Thousands of individual donations of food and clothing were collected by Campus Ministry. Nearly $32,000.00 was raised by the SFP for a Hurricane Relief Fund to assist faculty, staff, and students who were seriously affected by the storm. Several alumni in health care professions volunteered to provide medical assistance to the elderly who were trapped in high-rise buildings that lost power. Student athletes sorted and loaded donations at a local parish. $OXPQL IURP WKH ÂżIWK DQQLYHUVDU\ &ODVV RI

2007 led a very successful donation drive at their Class Reunion on November 10th. Amid the “darkness�, countless numbers helped bring “light� to so many in the community. ON THE COVER: Making History Bro. Leonard Conway, O.S.F. assumes the role of Prep’s President and Patrick J. McLaughlin ‘73 becomes the Principal This past spring, Bro. William Boslet, O.S.F., Superior General of the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. Francis Prep, announced that Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F., would become the first-ever President of St. Francis Prep beginning in September 2013, serving a four-year term.

Pat has held a variety of positions at St. Francis Prep during the past 30 years including teaching Health Education, Phys Ed, Driver’s Education, serving as a basketball coach, baseball coach and moderator of intramurals. He has also served as an Assistant Principal for Faculty and Instruction for more than 20 years. In that role, he has been closely involved with many of Prep’s important administrative decisions. Pat is also a member of the Prep’s Hall of Fame.

In making this announcement, Brother William Boslet stated, “With this new Administrative model the Board of Trustees anticipates that the St. Francis Prep Community—Administrators, Faculty and Staff—will continue to meet the challenges of the 21st Century with the confidence and enthusiasm they have always demonstrated.” Please join us in congratulating Brother Leonard and Pat McLaughlin and wishing them well as they assume their new roles.

Brother Leonard first met the Franciscan Brothers while attending Bishop Ford High School. He was a gifted student who excelled academically and came to appreciate the Brothers so much he enrolled in the training program for the Brotherhood while he attended St. Francis College. He became a postulant in 1966 and in 1967 received the Franciscan habit and by 1968 he took his

Outside of SFP, Pat served as an adjunct professor at Queens College and is currently on the faculty at St. John’s University’s School of Education and Human Services. (In April 2013, he was recognized by SJU at the 8th Annual Leaders in Education Awards Dinner.)

This past school year marked Brother Leonard’s 30th year as Principal and he is currently in his 45th year as a Franciscan Brother. He is now serving in his 42nd year at Prep and is also an Honorary Alumnus.

On Monday, June 17, 2013 the 20th Annual Golf Classic was held at Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, NY. After more than 200 golfers played on a superb course and enjoyed an outstanding cocktail hour, guests dined on a delicious buffet dinner as we honored two outstanding individuals: Michael F. Mongelli ’79 and Father Bill Sweeney. Each of them spoke about how much St. Francis Prep has meant to them. The net proceeds of the event benefit the Prep’s scholarship program! Rev. William Sweeney H ‘03 William Francis Xavier Sweeney III was one of four children born to William and Mary Frances Regan of Astoria, NY. With his trademark wit, Father Bill says, “I was born in 1955 and my father always told everyone how very important that year was for our family—the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the New York Yankees in the World Series!� He’s a true people person with a great sense of humor and has been the heart, soul and the “funnybone� of each community that he’s ministered to in his more than 30 years in the priesthood. As a child, Bill Sweeney was very active at St. Joseph’s School (now St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy) in Astoria, Queens where he played every sport the school had to offer. He was even involved in Irish Step Dancing, and had an opportunity to perform at the 1964 World’s Fair. He continued to dance until he graduated from 8th grade. The following year he went on to Cathedral Prep in Elmhurst, Queens where he played basketball, served as the Editor of the school newspaper and was elected Class President. Graduating in 1973, Father Bill has maintained life long friendships with his classmates and has served as the school’s Alumni Board President. Last year he was inducted into the Cathedral Prep Hall of Fame and a scholarship was established in his name. (Continued on next page.)

Michael F. Mongelli ’79 Michael F. Mongelli ’79 is one of the founding committee members of the St. Francis Prep Golf Classic and has participated in it every year in the 20 years since it began. He is also a member of the St. Francis Prep Alumni Board of Directors and has been an avid supporter of the many Alumni Association’s annual events. “Prep helped to shape me socially, intellectually and spiritually through the critical teenage years. It was a microcosm of New York City in the late 1970s, full of disparate groups, ranging from the “jocks� to the “disco crew� to the “intellects�, I found it fairly easy to engage students from all the groups and that has served me well as an attorney.� Michael recalls with great fondness how the faculty had a big influence (Continued on next page.)

Born in Queens, NY in June of 1961 Michael is the oldest of two boys to his late mother Theresa who passed in 1991 at the far too early age of 53, and his father Michael. He graduated from St. Kevin’s School in Flushing and continued on to St. Francis Prep in the Fall of 1975. Prep was a great experience for him on so many levels and he attests to the fact that, aside from his parents, Prep was the greatest influence in his development as a person.

He also played on the JV Basketball Team and later became the Manager of the Varsity Team. Afterwards he was accepted into the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, NY and was ordained a Deacon in January 1981. His first assignment was at Holy Family Parish in Flushing. He was ordained a priest on May 1, 1981 by Bishop Francis J. Muguvero, earning the distinction of being the only priest ever to be ordained in Holy Family Church. (Soon after he was ordained, it became customary for all priests to be ordained at the Seminary.) While at Holy Family Parish Father Bill worked closely with the school and youth ministry. In 1988 he was reassigned to St. Camillus in Rockaway Beach, NY. While there, he also served as the Chaplain at Stella Maris High School from 1989-1997. He was well-regarded by the parishioners and was named “Irishman of the Year” at the Annual Rockaway Parade and honored at the Rockaway Irish Festival. The St. Francis Prep Connection Father Bill’s involvement with SFP began in 1981 when Msgr. James Cooney, who served as Prep’s Chaplain, invited the newly ordained Fr. Bill to hear confessions. This was the beginning of his storied relationship with SFP as well as his long friendship with the late Msgr. Cooney.

At Prep Father Bill was assigned to Campus Ministry. He worked with Sr. Diane Capuano, O.P. and Sr. Peggy McVetty, O.P. until June 2002 when Bishop Thomas V. Daily reassigned him to serve as the Pastor at St. Catherine of Sienna in St. Albans, Queens. They were very

busy and productive years for Father Bill as he oversaw a major renovation of the church as well as a successful Capital Campaign. In 2008, the parish merged with St. Pascal Baylon in St. Albans, Queens to form Our Lady of Light. After the merger he returned to St. Francis Prep to serve as Chaplain once again! A Perennial Student Father Bill often jokes, “I’m 58 years old and I’m still is high school!” He continues with

Leonard. St. Francis Prep Assistant Principal, Gerilyn Coccia, has often witnessed Fr. Bill’s compassionate approach during the ten years facilitating the Bereavement Group together: “Fr. Bill engages students through sharing his own stories of loss and life, as well offering understanding with their questions of faith when a loved one dies. In addition, his use of humor and openness to learn about their experiences provides students with a sense of peace, and a welcoming place to share both laughter and tears during difficult times. Fr. Bill truly cares about the students and their families, which is demonstrated daily”. Father Sweeney has the unique gift of being able to relate to almost anyone, but especially to students on the high school level. Prep’s Director of Campus Ministry, Christian Sullivan, has been impressed with Fr. Bill’s approach to ministry. “Fr. Bill accepts young people for who they are. He doesn’t approach people with an attitude of needing to fix them. Fr. Bill first meets people where they are emotionally, spiritually, developmentally, (Continued on next page.)

while living at St. Clare’s in Rosedale where Msgr. Cooney was the pastor. Father Bill can still recall his very brief interview with Prep’s Principal, Bro. Leonard Conway, O.S.F.: “Just be good to the kids!” he told me.

He was an excellent Spanish teacher and would allow me to gently mock him in class (generally about his bald head) as I answered in Spanish. He in turn would include my name as part of the written test with an unflattering multiple choice answer getting my fellow students a point on the test!” In addition to diversity of the student body, Mike enjoyed the academic rigor and the expectations the faculty placed upon all students to excel. It was during his sophomore year at Prep that he decided that he wanted to be a lawyer. Mike worked for his father at his Flushing butcher shop—Michael’s Prime Meat— beginning at 8 years of age and by fourth grade, he was working after school most weekdays and all day Saturday. While at the Prep, he even had to work on Saturdays after JV Football games. As a result of his desire to earn income and purchase his own car at 16, he gave up football at St. Francis Prep. However, he missed the camaraderie, so in his senior year in Prep, he returned as the Terrier! “At Prep, Mike always stood out as a person who possessed a great intellect, a good sense of humor and team spirit” said Wally Bishop ‘80. That spirit was evident in his ability to rally his classmates and teammates to come together— often in large numbers! Michael shared this amusing anecdote; “Vinny Augusta ‘79 and I

debated over who should hold one particular Sunday night post-varsity football game party and I won. That Friday afternoon a late announcement was made of a Monday holiday due to our successful magazine drive and over 200 students descended on my family’s house that Sunday night!” Three and a half decades later, Michael has kept in contact with a number of his classmates and represented others [in legal matters] over the years. He has also hired several Prep graduates to work in his law firm during this time. In all,

he considers his sibling, Larry, (SFP Class of 1981), and his brother-in-law Mark Jarmek, (SFP Class of 1978) the closest of all in the Prep family. Working Hard & Working Smart The work ethic that Mike’s father instilled in him at the family store remained with him throughout college. For instance, when he began studying at St. John’s University in 1979

it was the height of the “disco era”. Instead of simply hanging out at the clubs, Mike worked at several of them as a bartender. He concentrated on his studies and walked onto the football team in his senior year where he started as cornerback for the Redmen. After graduating with a B.S. in Marketing in 1983, he and a teammate, John Donachie, formed a not-for-profit corporation—the Redmen Touchdown Club— and over a decade they conducted a number of successful fundraising events with the goal of funding equipment for the team and stadium seating at their home field. Despite the fact that today the SJU football program is dormant, the group remains strong and just held a reunion as recently as last December. Even though Mike decided to become a lawyer while he was a student at Prep, he muses that his decision to study law at St. John’s University was ultimately influenced by the fact that he held a very rare commodity in his possession--a reserved parking permit at the school. St. John’s School of Law enjoys a national reputation for its academic excellence, but in the 1980s it was infamous for the paucity of student parking. Since Mike owned and operated a 60-seat restaurant while in his second and third years of law school, reserved parking was paramount to staying on schedule. “The restaurant provided me with great life lessons for my career in law”, Mike recalls. He completed his law school studies in 1986 and was admitted to the New York Bar in February 1987. Not one to let any grass grow under his feet, he opened his own law firm the first day he was admitted to practice and has since

etc. He listens to them if they need someone to listen, supports them if they are in crisis, or jokes around with them if they are just stopping by to say hello. His homilies are designed to get all of us to pay attention through laughter and then Fr. Bill delivers the challenging points about how to live out the values of the Gospel.”

Park, NY and still enjoys her son’s good humor, inspiring homilies and his spirit of generosity. Known for his wit, Father Bill is adept at using humor in his homilies with students while keeping lessons in faith at the heart of his message. “Getting them laughing is great , but I try to get them thinking more about their faith.” he says.

Another amazing characteristic of Fr. Bill is his dedication and constant presence at school functions. “Fr. Bill is like your best friend who is always there for you. The challenge at SFP is that there are numerous events and countless people needing a priest. Somehow, Fr. Bill manages to be there for us all - alumni, parents, staff, faculty, and students,” explained Sullivan.

Prior to the start of one liturgy this past school year, Fr. Bill called the students to attention by saying, “We seem to be all about status these days, so before we begin Mass, I want everyone to take out their cell phones and update your Facebook status.” For a moment or two the students were quite bemused. He continued with, “Maybe text your friends, text your parents and tell them you’re at Mass. right now” After a short pause he concluded, “We talk about evangelization these days... how we can reach out to other people...by you being here today, by your presence, you are witnessing to your faith.”

In 2003, the SFP Alumni Association inducted Father Bill as an Honorary Alumnus. At the 2013 Commencement Exercises, Father Bill was presented with the Franciscan Spirit Award which is considered to be the highest honor bestowed upon a member of the Prep Community. And, after more than 30 years serving as a priest, Father Bill will go on three month Sabbatical in Rome starting in September 2013. St. Francis Prep is proud to honor Father Bill this evening for all that he does for the students, faculty, staff and alumni!

A Family Man True to His Roots Mike continues to identify as a “Queens Boy”, even though he’s been living in the Village of Flower Hill in Nassau County for close to two decades with his lovely wife and confidante Leana. “My family means everything to me and they provide me the impetus to go out and make every day count.” he says glowingly. Mike and Leana are the proud parents of what he refers to as their “four redheaded M’s” which include: t .JDIBFM, (age 15) – a Junior at Kellenberg Memorial t .BSDP, (age 14) – freshman at Kellenberg t .BUUIFX, (age 12) – 7th grader at St. Peter of Alcantara in Port Washington t .BYJNVT, (age 9) – 5th grader at St. Peter Alcantara in Port Washington Mike is a Director and the Fundraising Chairman of Port Youth Activities (PYA), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit and Better Business Bureau approved corporation that receives no financial assistance from any Municipal Authority but relies solely on a combination of modest fees and fund-raising to support their activities and provide safe and vibrant sports programs for nearly 3,000 registered boys and girls over the course of the sports year. He

Leana is also a big supporter of PYA and St. Peter’s school and parish. In fact, like John Brown ‘76 and his late wife Pat (SFP Honorary Alumna, Class of 2013), Leana and Mike have chaired the annual St. Peter’s Parish Party. Work Hard, Play Hard The law firm that bears his name—Michael F. Mongelli II, P.C.— is primarily a litigation practice focused on estate, real estate and civil litigation matters. He exclaims, “I love what I do and take pride in the fact that I have never lost a jury trial in the estate arena.” To help take the edge off the stressful practice, Mike plays touch tackle football nine months a year; fast pitch softball and is an avid skier and in addition to coaching duties, he is a big Giants and Yankees fan—despite having grown up in Queens cheering for the Mets! He joined the Alumni Board several years before he, Wally Bishop ‘80, John Pereira ‘62 and several others organized the first golf outing at the Old Hauppauge Country Club. “Back then we had 54 golfers and earned a $3,000 profit!” he recounted. The trio were also the driving force behind the first SFP phon-a-thons and pushed for Prep’s first part time alumni director. “Boy have we come a long way!”

Building on our Success in Science and Music

Several years ago, the Franciscan Brothers, the Prep’s Trustees and other leaders began laying the groundwork to help insure a long, prosperous and productive future for the school. From this emerged a “Capital Improvement Program” designed to transform Prep into a truly modern, WZHQW\ ¿UVW FHQWXU\ HGXFDWLRQDO IDFLOLW\ LQ VHYHUDO SKDVHV 7KH ¿UVW WZR SKDVHV RI WKLV SURJUDP ZHUH FRPSOHWHG LQ 2010 and 2011 respectively. For over 150 years the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn have devoted themselves to an educational mission that has helped shape thousands upon thousands of young lives in very positive ways. In one of the first steps taken to fulfill this mission, the Brothers founded St. Francis Academy in Brooklyn in 1858, and since that time the school has provided an outstanding Catholic education in the Franciscan tradition for students from all walks of life. Today, we know the Academy as St. Francis Preparatory School, the largest, private, Catholic secondary school in the nation. Over the years, the Prep has continually evolved to meet the needs of the times. Since those days in that simple building on Baltic Street in Brooklyn, the school has twice relocated, first in 1952 to North Sixth Street in Brooklyn and again in 1974 to its present Fresh Meadows location in Queens, at which point the Prep became a co-educational institution for the first time. As the Prep has grown and re-established itself in each new setting, it has steadfastly remained committed to fostering the intellectual and spiritual development of students who are experiencing the finest in Catholic education in the Franciscan tradition.

There are many graduates today who recall with deep love and affection their time at the Prep and the dedication of the Franciscan Brothers who taught and guided them. Throughout the past 154 years, the Brothers have carried on, in the words of Bishop Molloy, “quietly and serenely, uncomplaining and happy in the work of their calling.� Under the leadership of these good Brothers, St. Francis Prep has continued to grow, with administrators, teachers and students constantly aspiring to and achieving high educational, academic and spiritual standards that meet the challenges of today and prepare for a better tomorrow. The incredible has become the expected and the “norm� is excellence. And we have now embarked on an exciting journey of renewal and modernization, making the most significant investments in the future of the Prep since the move from Brooklyn to Fresh Meadows nearly 40 years ago. Aside from routine maintenance and repair work (and some creative thinking on how to best utilize the existing crowded facilities), the Prep’s physical plant had not changed or been improved upon in any significant way since its construction in the early 1960’s—nor had there been any major capital investment in the facilities until recently. (The building originally housed Bishop Reilly Diocesan High School until the Franciscan Brothers took over in 1974 and moved the Prep there from Brooklyn.)

In contrast, the educational landscape changed dramatically over that same period, and the Brothers always responded to the changes by utilizing whatever resources were available at the time. Hence, any work needed on the facilities was performed with minimal capital expenditure. With this as background, here are several success stories along with some of the challenges the school still faces.

Our Science Program The Science Department offers a comprehensive, in-depth program of study in the physical, life, and environmental sciences. The Science Department offers all four New York State Regents courses: Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics (Physical Setting) and Biology (the Living Environment). We also offer four Advanced Placement courses: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Environmental Science. Students may also participate in authentic Science ma Research, a 3-year sequence of courses Re that emphasizes the research process and tha presentation of a final research report. All pr students must take three years of Science stu and must pass at least one Science Regents an exam in order to graduate. ex The Prep’s Science Research Program Th has grown significantly in recent years in ha both scope and prestige. The quality of the bo program has been demonstrated in ten pr consecutive years and twelve out of fifteen co years (through 2013) where students have ye been semi-finalists in the prestigious Intel be Science Talent Search, making the Prep Sc the h only Catholic High School in the nation to accomplish this.

Prep’s Music Program Earns a Rare Credential for its Academic Excellence

St. Francis Prep’s Music Program is outstanding—one of the best in New York State at the high school level and the Music curriculum offers students an opportunity to broaden their cultural background and to prepare for collegelevel work. Among its achievements, the Chamber Orchestra earned a Gold Medal rating with the New York State Music Association. And in 2010 St. Francis Prep became the first-ever high school to receive a special Music Department accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

During the Prep’s 150th Anniversary in 2008, SPF graduate Lou Marino ‘52 shared the following heartwarming story of the profound impact St. Francis Prep’s Music program had on him: “One of the fondest memories took place at an SFP Concert at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. As the orchestra played the beautiful “Ballet of the Egyptians� with me on bass, I glanced out into the audience and saw my dad, (who loved classical music), with tears of pride streaming down his face. God Bless Brother Benignus for not allowing me to make a terrible mistake and miss a moment that I will cherish forever!� —Lou Marino, Class of 1952 A Recent Development: Investing in music education is one of Lou Marino’s great passions and he and his lovely wife Lucille have agreed to dedicate the Orchestra Room in the proposed new music facilities with a “pacesetting� leadership gift to The Campaign for St. Francis Prep.

Our Outstanding Music Program Any music educator or parent of a music student can call to mind anecdotes about effectiveness of music study in helping children become better students. Skills learned through the discipline of music transfer to study skills, communication skills, and cognitive skills useful in every part of the curriculum. The discipline of music study —particularly through participation in ensembles—helps students learn to work effectively in the school environment. Researchers have studied the benefits of music education over time and have consistently found strong correlations between music and academic achievement in addition to positive social and motivational effects.

The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150 Susan Loftus ‘76, Chief Operating Officer for AIG Indonesia, recently joined a growing group of alumni making “pacesetting” leadership gifts to The Campaign for St. Francis Prep. Her reasoning? Susan tells us, “Always happy to lend my support, and I am very honored to contribute to the enhancement of SFP for future generations of students. My time at the Prep was truly memorable and a defining moment in my life.” She went on to say, “I continue to lean on my SFP education and values even after all these years, and anything I can do to improve the SFP experience for current and future students, I’m in!”

INVESTING IN MUSIC EDUCATION Music education has demonstrated results. Researchers have consistently found strong correlations between music and academic achievement. Jim Dooley, (St. Francis Prep Class of 1994) is an Emmy-winning composer/ songwriter well known in film, television and video game circles. John Fry ‘78 , the current President of Drexel University, has generously pledged his support to the Campaign for St. Francis Prep effort with a leadership gift that will provide for the creation of The Laurie Fry-Kane ‘82 Dance Studio within the new three-story addition depicted on page 38. The gift was made in honor of

What’s Happening at St. Francis Prep Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, Back to school commenced with the tragic and untimely death of one of our Juniors, Daniel Fernandez ‘14 and alumnus Tony Laino ‘00. After we experienced Super Storm Sandy, a cataclysmic event which almost devastated peoples lives and generated an unprecedented amount of damage to the home of many of our students, faculty, staff and alumni. Yet, by sheer human resolve and the abundant graces granted by Almighty God, those severely impacted were able to rekindle hope in the future and begin the challenging and difficult process of rebuilding their lives.

This is simply another way of saying that the Prep spirit was able to prevail in items of adversity, and that, at least in part, the learning experiences gleaned at the Prep were not mere abstract formalities, but important lessons for life. Thomas Wolfe once wrote; “You Can’t Go Home Again”. He could not have been thinking of the Prep when he wrote this, for through the years, the Prep has continued to serve as a second home to so many of its alumni and friends, ever encouraging them to come home again. And, when it is long distance that make it difficult for some to return to home base, then home is brought to them. It is in this vein that regional chapters have been established in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Florida, Arizona and Boston. We know that staying connected is vital to healthy relationships. So we are committed to keeping our alumni informed about all the many diverse events unfolding at the Prep, especially those innovations which keep helping to improve both the quality of education and the quality of life. With he specific goal of maintaining a close and dynamic family-like relationship with our graduates, the Alumni Association continues to encourage active participation on the part of all alumni.

Ultimately, the strength and success of any of its events and programs depend on the generosity and willingness of our alumni to stand up and be counted, to give back to their alma mater a small part of what they have received. It is in this spirit that we intend to increase the number and scope of our activities, so as to provide more choices and a greater opportunity for involvement. No matter where our graduates reside, whether near or far away, whether down the block or across the continent, we want to welcome them to make a difference and share their talents with us.

At this point, I would like to take the time to acknowledge Sister Phyllis Murphy, R.S.M., a member of the Social Studies Department from 1980- to 2012. In her years at the Prep, she has made an outstanding and considerable contribution to the Prep community, serving as both a social studies teacher and a sports moderator. Sister Phyllis retired this past June, and we will deeply miss her presence at the Prep. Let us bid her a fond farewell. Now it is time to smell the proverbial roses.

Let us hope and pray that God’s blessings will continue to shower down upon all of us, and that with the pooled talents of our faculty, staff and alumni, the Prep will be able, in ever more creative ways, to respond to the needs of the students of tomorrow.

I would like to wish Lenny Antinori former Chairperson of Art Department for many years the best of luck in his new role as Chairman of the Molloy College Art Department. Lenny has been with the Prep since 1975. I would also like to wish Mary Anne Spicijaric ’84, former Chairperson of the Science Department for many years, the best of luck in her new role as Principal of Fontbonne Hall Academy. At the same time I would like to wish Brother Leonard Conway ’01 the best of luck in his new role as the First President of St. Francis Prep, also Pat McLaughlin ’73 as the First lay Principal of St. Francis Prep, and Chris Mendolia ’87 in his new job as Assistant Principal. Two days at the Prep I love to witness are the first day of school and the last day of school for all our students. What an amazing transformation occurs during this span of time. (1) On Friday, March 8th, the St. Francis Preparatory School’s Chamber Orchestra were the special guests of the InterSchool Orchestras of New York’s assembly presentation at P.S. 115, The Glen Oaks School where our own Kathy Sciortino ‘76 serves as Principal. The assembly was presented to P.S. 115’s 2nd through 5th graders, and introduced the instruments of the orchestra, as well as demonstrated what makes music an expressive art form. The orchestra was launched with the generous support of Councilman Mark Weprin. Prep’s Chamber Orchestra is one of the elite ensembles at the school. They perform between 15 and 20 times per year at both concerts and various functions. (2) Eric Hafker ‘86 and his peers in the English Department encourage Prep students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation through a program called Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest. Our three finalists are: Aishvarya Arora ‘13 (not pictured) and Katherine Virgino ‘14 (left) and Ana Martinovic ‘14 (right). This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. (3) Bro. James McVeigh, O.S.F., helps Prep students put their Franciscan values into practice through the Franciscan Youth Movement’s Project Joy (writing to our armed forces and elderly people at Christmas, collecting discarded ink cartridges and cell phones, visiting elderly people, planning party for Children’s hospital, planning a Baby Shower for Birthright) each year. This group of students visited the residents of Queen of Peace Residence in Middle Village. (4) Four St. Francis Prep seniors advanced to the Finals Round of the 2013 NYCSEF and were present to accept their awards on Thursday, March 19th at special ceremony hosted by the New York City Department of Education and The City University of New York. They performed extremely well after winning the Brooklyn/Queens Championship, they went on to win the City Championship at St. John’s University with a 5-2 win over Iona Prep. (his run was from 1969-1979). In addition, the Varsity team accomplished what had not been done since 1976: the 2013 Varsity team won every game (100-0). No handball team in CHSAA history ever had both Varsity and JV win every game in a single season. The Junior Varsity team for 2013 was also perfect: not only did they win every match (17-0), but also they won every game (51-0). Highlights: NSCHSAA Individual Championships: St. Francis Prep’s Khayla Martinez ‘14 was the NSCHSAA All-Around champion. Martinez finished with a total score 36.625. She also came in first in all-four events, which included a 9.6 on the vault. Nicole Donini ‘14 finished second in the AllAround and Kayla Georgiades ‘14, Junior Varsity Individual Champion! Vallone Jr. and David Weprin, extended a warm welcome to the Lady Terriers and congratulated them for the their achievements, both athletic and academic. The Council Members also provided them with a private guided tour of the history, art and architecture of the historic building along with an insider’s view of the inner workings of the City Council. The Terriers captured the CHSAA Class AA state championship, 4-1, over Mary Louis Academy at the Alley Pond Park Tennis Center. The state title was Prep’s 15th straight, but this season began unlike any other during coach John Brennan’s tenure at the school. Eight seniors graduated from last year’s squad, and Coach Brennan felt that his current group was not head-and-shoulders above the competition like in previous years. That’s partly why he didn’t hesitate to call this year’s title the most satisfying of his career.“I’m just proud of this team because. . .I love them, but there’s no way they had the talent level on this team they had for the last 12 years,” he said. “But they worked extremely hard to win this championship.”

The Prep Community ’s Multi-Year

Franciscan Journey from Queens to Kenya Since the Prep’s 150th Anniversary Celebration in 2008, Terriers have been raising money to help the students of their “twin” school—St. Francis Secondary School in Lare, Kenya. It all began as a donation collection conducted on Fridays during Lent and soon evolved into more. The school was founded by the Franciscan Brothers of Galway, the same religious congregation that founded SFP. The students come from very poor families and were orphaned by the 2008 election violence but continue to thrive despite adversity. “When we found out about the long distance that several of the students had to walk to and from school, we challenged each Cor to donate a bicycle.” said Campus Ministry Director Christian Sullivan.

In the first year, enough money was raised to purchase 60 bicycles for students otherwise would have had to walk five miles (one way) to school each morning. The fundraising proceeds help buy new textbooks, school

equipment, pay tuition and provide food for orphaned students. This past spring SFP Campus Ministry Director, Christian Sullivan introduced Prep students to Sr. Teresia Mbugua, CSP, (pictured below, right) who is a graduate of St. Francis Secondary School in Lare, Kenya. Sr. Teresia thanked Prepsters for their dedication to the students in her home country and her alma mater, noting that many students have been able to reach their educational goals because of the support from St. Francis Prep. She also led them in a traditional Kenyan song. More than 1,200 students, faculty and staff purchased T-shirts in support of this effort. Students were permitted to “dress-down” and wear these shirts on the four Fridays in March during Lent. Bro. Leonard Conway, OSF visits our

“Twin School” while on Sabbatical in Kenya On the eve of the Franciscan Brothers 150th Anniversary in 2008, Bro. Leonard was asked by Bro. Peter Roddy, OSF, Superior General of the Irish Franciscan Brothers, to consider building a relationship with another secondary school, St. Francis Secondary School in Lare, Kenya. For the past five years, the Prep community has been lending its support to our “twin school”. Earlier this year, Brother Leonard was invited to visit the Franciscan Brothers community in Kenya. The trip provided him with a perspective on the tremendous impact that St. Francis Prep community’s support has been to our Kenyan brothers and sisters and infused him with a renewed spirit about the importance of our Franciscan mission both here and abroad. A Brief History of the Franciscan Brothers The Brothers were founded at Mountbellew, Ireland from where other communities were established among the rural poor. In 1857, two Brothers travelled to the United States and now have three communities here. In 1976, the Brothers went to Kenya and have communities at Molo and Lare of Nakuru Diocese and a house of studies in Nairobi.

Poor, and Yet So Rich in Spirit Reflecting on what he saw in his first few days in Lare, Brother Leonard says, “They are so poor and have nothing… no electricity or running water at home.” And yet, during the welcoming ceremony when the students danced and sang for him, he said, “Seeing them in their blue uniforms and their smiles was worth a $1 million and more!” Brother Leonard was invited to speak about the Franciscan Brothers and St. Francis Prep at more than 20 secondary schools (private and public), several colleges and at every celebration of

Anniversaries and Milestones The trip coincided with Bro. Leonard’s 30th Anniversary as the Principal of St. Francis Prep and his 45th anniversary as a Franciscan Brother. He applied for, and received permission from the Franciscan Brothers Community to take a threeweek sabbatical. The experience brought out feelings that he

said ranged from “very emotional” to “extremely uplifting and inspiring”.

In a daily journal that details his experiences from each day of the trip, Brother Leonard reflects upon the great sense of fraternity and spirituality among his confreres in Kenya. “They are amazing followers of St. Francis who are doing great work with the poor in Kenya...so true to our patron saint and our mission.” He concluded, “It was an emotional, spiritual and rejuvenating experience as well as a great renewal for me as a Franciscan Brother of 45 years.” Brother Leonard hopes to return to visit again!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Lieutenant General Christopher C. Bogdan, Class of 1964 manager and program director. He is a command pilot and experimental test pilot with more than 3,200 flying hours in more than 35 aircraft types, including the KC-135, FB-111A, B-2 and F-16. He has commanded at the squadron and group levels, and also served as the executive officer to the Commander, Electronic Systems Center, and to the Commander, Air Force Materiel Command.

Charlie Cain 1955 was a star on the Prep’s City Championship track team in his senior year. His granddaughter, Mary Cain, is the fastest and youngest (age 17) distance runner in U.S. history having broken indoor and outdoor high school records. When she won the Penn Relays high school mile, she told the NY Times reporter, “That win was for my grandfather.” Charlie still holds several school records at Prep.

Prior to his current assignment, General Bogdan was the Program Executive Officer for the KC-46 Tanker Modernization Directorate, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. Lt. Gen. Christopher C. Bogdan, SFP Class of 1964 is the Program Executive Officer for the F-35 Lightning II Joint Program Office in Arlington, Va. The F-35 Lightning II Joint Program Office is the Department of Defense’s (DoD) agency responsible for developing and acquiring the F-35A/B/C, the next-generation strike aircraft weapon system for the Navy, Air Force, Marines, and many allied nations.

Chris’s work, achievements and service to our nation are a fine reflection on St. Francis Prep. We wish him continued success!

As deputy program manager, Bogdan signaled a potentially confrontational style in September when he publicly criticized JSF contractor Lockheed Martin, calling the relationship between the company and the program office “the worst I have ever seen” and suggesting that more competition could drive down costs. His words may have hit home: The week before he officially took over the program, Lockheed and DoD reached an agreement to purchase 32 JSFs for under $4 billion, a cheaper rate than the four previous U.S. purchases.

Bogdan came to the JSF program after running the Air Force’s KC-46 Tanker Modernization Directorate, where he won praise for locking Boeing into a fixed-price contract in 2011 that ensures any costs over $4.9 billion are paid by the company, not the government. Before that, he was senior military assistant to the undersecretary of defense for acquisition. That combination of experience suggests still bigger roles for Bogdan in the future. General Bogdan was commissioned in 1983 from the U.S. Air Force Academy. He has served as an operational pilot, test pilot, staff officer, executive officer, acquisition program

Peter England 1959 was recently in St. Petersburg, FL and was able to reconnect with the former Brother Fabian, now Father Jim Toal, O.F.M. (pictured above, right). Peter said, “He is doing really well at nearly 80 (who knew he was so young), and sends his regards to all of you. The best story he told had to do with his engineering the purchase of the current Prep building from the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Peter Corritori 1959 was so impressed with our students’ spirit as they marched in the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade this year amid the rain, sleet and snow, that he made a $1,000 donation for tuition assistance to the most deserving student participant. Leonard (pictured above) did a little research and determined that one freshman cheerleader, Kiriaki Amvrosiatos, who also has a sibling enrolled at Prep would be the best beneficiary of Peter’s generous and thoughtful gift. Kiriaki was absolutely delighted!

He was appointed as the medical director of comprehensive pain management at the Elliot Hospital four years ago. He has an active practice in family medicine in New Hampshire. Gerry was inducted into the SFP Hall of Fame two years ago and continues to serve as the Greater Boston Area Alumni Chapter coordinator for St. Francis Prep. Philip Bracco, 1970, recently wrote a book “Living for Game Day” about his three epic battles with cancer. The lessons learned in the classroom and on the football field played a large part in turning back what he calls “a demon that wanted the life he cherished.” Phil says “The story has the comedic overtones and passions of academy award nominated Silver Linings Playbook. For his efforts, Jim has been named Coach of the Year in 3 different conferences, the Atlantic 10 the Big East and twice in the Big 10 and was selected National Co-Coach of the Year in 1999. During his career, Jim has served as a spokesperson for various charities including the Parkinson Foundation, Make A Wish Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House. This past year he served as a volunteer mentor for the Boston Scholar Athlete Program, an organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of the experience for the studentathlete’s of Boston’s inner city public schools. O’Brien has two married daughters, Erin Wright and Amy Siggens and a five year old granddaughter, Marin. He and his wife Mary reside in Boston. Congratulations Jim!

Anthony Yanni 1973 and his wife, Isabella, have been married for 27 years and have two children; Anthony (16), attending Xavier High School and Marissa (20), attending St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY Adriana Pace-Harley 1977 lives in Winter Garden, FL and is a certified master herbal information specialist who has worked for an international organic retailer. Relying on her experience as school administrator and college professor, she has developed curriculum of healthy living education for both internal and external training. Having taught Humanities, Advanced Sciences, and Religious Studies. Her latest endeavors include a monthly column in Think Healthy Magazine entitled, “The Wholistic View” and marketing/advertising. Michelle Steffers 1978 is a physician and living in Rochester, married to James Fetten, who is also a physician. They have three children. Diana Sweeney 1978 adopted children from Vietnam and from Russia. Her family is in the process of relocating from Manhattan to Whitestone. She’s the co-founder of Energy Watch Inc., an energy rate consulting firm located in Manhattan.

At press time, we received the sad news that John A. Conway Sr. 1971 passed on August 24, 2012 at the age of 58. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 20 years, Sandy, and their four children. A long-time resident of Meriden, CT, Jack was a devoted family man and active in his parish. He was a sales representative for Graphic Papers of Mansfield, MA where he was affectionately known as “Jackie Papers”. Friends and colleagues knew him for his strong and hearty laugh, generous personality and his sensitive side. To quote his wife Sandy, “Jack, you will be missed so much, but you will be with us in our memories and in our love and never forgotten.

Eddie Jenkins 1968 is featured in a fascinating new book entitled “Fraternity” about College of the Holy Cross president, John E. Brooks, S.J. who recruited young men he felt had the potential to succeed if given an opportunity. Among the 20 students he had a hand in recruiting were Clarence Thomas, the future Supreme Court justice; Edward P. Jones, who would go on to win a Pulitzer Prize for literature; Theodore Wells who would become one of the nation’s most successful defense attorneys; Stanley Grayson, future New York City deputy mayor who would break the color bar on Wall Street; and our own Eddie Jenkins, who would play for the Miami Dolphins during their 1972 perfect season.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Ronald Gentile ‘83: A “Vison” for Helping and for Healing at Home and Abroad Ronald Gentile 1983 MD, FACS, FASRS is Professor of Ophthalmology, Director of the Ocular Trauma Service (posterior segment), and Coordinator of the Retina Service at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary (NYEEI) affiliated with New York Medical College. He is also an attending surgeon at Winthrop University Hospital on Long Island with a local satellite office. Dr. Gentile dedicates his time to clinical ophthalmic care, research, teaching, and humanitarian work. He is a retinal specialist and surgeon with expertise in diabetic eye disease, retinal vascular disorders, macular diseases, ultrasonography, UBM, retinal detachments and ocular trauma. Ronald was a Summa Cum Laude graduate of the School of Medicine at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn. He completed his internship at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and his ophthalmology residency at the NYEEI. He performed his Retina Fellowship at the prestigious Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit, Michigan. Raymond Alma 1983 won the National Cartoonist Society Award for “Best Illustration” in 2010. Over the last two years he’s traveled as a volunteer with the USO, drawing for the troops. Operation Restore Vision is a not-for-profit chapter of ISMS made up of a team of highly skilled ophthalmologists and eye care professionals. They distinguish themselves from other eye care teams by the scope of their eye care delivery and ability to teach. Their mission is to restore vision and prevent blindness to patients in underdeveloped and poor countries. In addition to supporting free eye care, they also teach and train local medical professionals to carry on the work. Ron says, They hope to positively impact the lives of those going blind who feel forgotten or have nowhere to turn while bridging the gap of ethnic, political, and religious differences. Ron founded the ISMS-Operation Restore Vision in Nepal chapter in 2009 and currently serves as the president. Colleen Browne-Magarian 1983 is happily married for 16 years to Mike, who she met as a college undergrad. Their two beautiful daughters are in middle school and keeping them busy with their sports and activities, while she works parttime from home. She’s been participating in a local Connecticut rowing club for three years and volunteering at the soup kitchen.

Lisa Morana-Ferrara 1983 is teaching Kindergarten in the Roosevelt UFSD. She married Peter Ferrara in 1988 and they have two wonderful sons, Steve who is currently attending Sacred Heart University, and Matt who is a sophomore at Plainedge High School.

Josephine Buttafuoco 1983 is working to end segregation of children with developmental delays/ disabilities (child advocate) in educational settings. Mary Curley-Leptak 1983 has been married to her husband Joe since 1991. She loves teaching and is on the Board of Directors of American Association of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese (Metro N.Y. Chapter) and serves as President of the Westchester Chapter of American Association of Teachers of French. Jeanne Fitzpatrick 1983 says hello to all her fellow classmates! Patti Ann Browne ‘83 is an anchor for Fox News Channel, Fox’s 24-hour news network, seen around the world on cable and satellite. FNC is the #1 cable news network. In 2012, she became one of nine inaugural inductees into the Brooklyn Diocese Hall of Fame, which honors prominent people living in the five boroughs who went through the Catholic school system. Browne has been with Fox since August 2000. She anchors the network’s 5 am show Monday through Friday every other week, as one of four rotating co-hosts. She also substitute hosts on other shows such as “America’s Newsroom” and “Fox Report”. And she anchors web shows and headline updates—during the day, and sometimes during Fox’s popular prime time lineup. Browne has interviewed hundreds of politicians, celebrities and other newsmakers, as well as covering countless breaking news stories live without a script. Browne is also a frequent guest on Fox’s irreverent late-night talk show “Red Eye”.

Browne went on to earn Masters Degree (GPA 4.0) in Communication Arts from the New York Institute of Technology in New

York. She attended on a full scholarship (teacher assistantship), which involved teaching news-writing and production skills to undergraduates. She was also a general assignment reporter for NYIT’s awardwinning news program “LI News Tonight”, which airs nightly on Long Island cable.

In 1997, Browne was snapped up by MSNBC, where she anchored full-time for three years. While part of the NBC News network, Brown also occasionally filled in as a substitute news anchor on CNBC, NBC’s 24-hour cable news network. In 2010, the Irish Voice named her as one of the “Irish Media Top 30”. In 1997, she was Aide to Grand Marshal of the Glen Cove, NY St. Patrick’s Day Parade. On March 15, 2014, Patti will serve as the Master of Ceremonies of the Prep’s inaugural Terrier Red & Blue Ring of Honor. This event will recognize the achievements of our prominent past athletes, coaches, moderators, athletic directors and others who have contributed most notably to our sports history and who have enhanced the spirit and reputation of the Prep.

Patti Ann Browne attended St. Robert Bellarmine grammar school and St. Francis Prep. At SFP, she was Freshman Class President, she ran track for a year and she appeared in numerous plays as a member of the Alvernian Drama Society for four years. Brown still returns to Prep for alumni events, including the annual Homecoming 5K Fun Run. Her two sisters, Colleen ‘83 and Mary Lou ‘84, are also proud SFP grads. Patti Ann remains close to her sisters, their husbands and her four nieces. She lives on Long Island with her husband Mike and son Connor.

Brown earned her Bachelors Degree in Communications at Fordham University. Many New Yorkers still remember her as cohost of a popular Irish music program on WFUV-FM (90.7 FM), Fordham’s far-reaching radio station. She was also news anchor and News Director of that 50,000-watt station.

Paul DeBenedittis 1988 is married and has four children; one child will be enrolled at Prep in September 2013. Kerriann Jannotte-Hinkley 1988 was married in August 2012 to Matthew Hinkley. She finished her advanced degree certificate in school district and school building leadership in April 2013.

1990s Jennifer Russo-Medici 1990 has been married to her husband Thomas since 1996 and they have two daughters, (Gianna and Isabella). Gianna will be a freshman at Prep this coming September 2013. Deborah Kleinheidt-Martinez 1993 reunited with Charlie Martinez (Class of 1993). They are now married and were expecting their first child in May. Nicole Schlott-Sullivan 1993 and Thomas Sullivan (1997) welcomed the arrival of their son Thomas Joseph Jr. on September 28, 2012. Elizabeth Owens-Mitchell 1996 and her husband Declan Mitchell ‘96 welcomed the birth of their daughter Molly Grace Mitchell on January 1, 2013. Christine Bruce-Caputi 1998 married Nick Caputi on December 17, 2010. They had their first child, Dana Nicole, on October 28, 2012. Cristina Georgescu 1998 has been accepted to Stony Brook University Pediatric Dentistry, Class of 2015. Kelli O’Donohue-Jendrasik 1998 has been teaching English at Valley Stream North High School for eleven years. She married Nicholas Jendrasik in 2007 and moved to Long Beach, NY. They recently completed renovations to their home after Super Storm Sandy.

2000s Maria Milcetic 2002 earned her bachelor of science degree in biology and psychology summa cum laude at Rensselear in 2006. She went on to obtain her medical degree from Albany Medical College in 2009. She is now an instructor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School and is an associate obstetrician/gynecologist at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. Maria is also engaged to be married. Joseph Staszweski 2002 is Sports Editor at the Times Ledger was awarded a second place prize at the New York Press Association’s annual convention for Best Sports Feature for his coverage of the impact of Sandy on a high school volleyball program. Dianne Mondello-Melchiorre 2003 married John Melchiorre (Class of 2001) on June 29th, 2012 at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Astoria, NY. Dianne is employed as a School Psychologist for the NYC DOE, while John is employed as a New York City Sanitation worker. Markos Papadatos 2003 had an opportunity to fulfill a childhood dream when he interviewed Mr. Hank Williams Jr., who is known as “Ol Bocephus”. Marissa Lombardo 2006 graduated from Hunter College and was accepted to Albert Einstein Medical School where she is in her third year and doing rotations at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. She passed the Boards scoring 25 points over the National average. Giuseppe Adragna 2007 is engaged to Heather Scalisi; the wedding is set for July 2014. Nicole Bifulco 2007 Team USA softball selection in summer 2010 represented team USA in Australian Olympic style fast pitch tournament with other selected Division I athletes from around the U.S.A. Angela Debellis 2007 is currently in graduate school to earn a MSED in TESOL Education. She graduated in 2011 undergraduate from Queens College magna cum laude.

Kristina Dowling 2007 Graduated Binghamton University in 2010 with a B.A. Theater and continued on to Hofstra University and graduated in 2012 with an M.S.E.D. Early Childhood Education. Kristen Drosinos 2007 graduated summa cum laude from St. John’s University. She was named to College of Professional Studies Dean’s list from 2008-2011. She was also a member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and College of Professional Studies Honor Society. Jacquelyn Nolasco 2007 graduated from Queens College with a double major in Accounting and Economics in Spring 2011. She finished her Masters in accounting and took the CPA exam. She has been working at a local tax firm since high school graduation that was recommended by her teacher Mrs. Frazier from the Business Department. She is truly thankful to Mrs.Frazier for this wonderful opportunity. Heather Scalisi 2007 is engaged to her high school sweetheart, Giuseppe Adragna, and plan to marry in July 2014! Antoinette Spina 2007 is attending Molloy College as a junior in the Nursing program. She was recently inducted into Sigma Theta Tau international honor society of nursing and received Dean’s list two consecutive semesters. Jennifer Sackowski 2009 was accepted to “Teach for America” in the Rio Grande Valley where most of the students in her class are “undocumented”. She has been studying about immigration reform and the experiences of undocumented workers and it made her think about the lessons learned in the SFP Franciscan Youth Movement. She wrote to Bro. James McVeigh, OSF, the SFP Franciscan Mission Coordinator to express her deep appreciation. “Although I did not really understand it then, I now find myself drawing upon things you tried to instill in us and I just wanted to let you know that I am forever grateful for your insight.” Nicole Lomangino ‘12 was voted New York City’s Top Softball Pitcher in a poll conducted by The New York Post.

Faculty and Staff News Mary Ann Spicijaric, SFP Class of 1984, has been appointed Principal of Fontbonne Hall Academy effective August 1, 2013. Mary Ann was part of the Prep’s Science Department for 25 years, serving as Chairperson from 2004 until 2013. Under her leadership, the department grew to offer a three year sequence of Advanced Placement courses that included AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and AP Environmental Science, a unique ninth grade curriculum called Advanced Physical Science that prepared students for the rigors of higher level Chemistry and Physics, and the implementation of a nationally recognized Science Research Program that earned St. Francis Prep the distinction of being the only Catholic school in the country to have students named as semifinalists in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search competition in 12 of the past 15 years. Mary Ann will now have the opportunity to lead Fontbonne Hall Academy, an all-girl school located in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn that has been dedicated to women’s leadership since 1937. Brother Ed Kent, O.S.F. (former faculty member and track coach) was No. 2 in the long jump, fifth in the triple jump and eight in the 60 yard dash by the National Age Group (75-79) ranking. Brother Ed is semi-retired and teaches French Literature at Fordham University, Lincoln Center. Mary Pappas, RN, BSN Class of 1978 has been a school nurse for more than 30 years, and since 2003, has worked at SFP. Mary became nationally known in 2009 when she contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about the unusually large number of students who were coming in with flu-like symptoms. This was quickly identified as the first known outbreak of N1H1 influenza. She became a national spokesperson for N1H1 awareness and was invited to the White House to speak in support of school nursing. She has gone on to publish three articles and give numerous presentations on N1H1. Private and Parochial School Nurse (PPSN) is proud to claim her as a member and honored her as the recipient of the Outstanding Private/Parochial School Nurse Award for 2013! Congratulations Mary!

rank of captain, and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Air Medal. Mr. Carey married Catherine Clare McDonald on April 4, 1953, at St. Vincent Ferrer in New York City. He was president of Peerless Petro Chemicals, Inc. and was affiliated with St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, the Knights of Malta and Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. Dr. Frank J. Macchiarola H 2000 Dr. Macchiarola, widely regarded as one of the most effective New York City schools chancellors of the last half-century, died on December 18, 2012 at his home in Downtown Brooklyn. He was 71. A graduate of St. Francis College, he was its president from 1996 to 2008. Frank met his wife, the former Mary T. Collins, in kindergarten at Holy Cross School in Flatbush. They had three sons, Joseph, Michael and Frank. They and his wife survive him, as do three brothers — Joseph, James and Henry — and seven grandchildren. Dr. Macchiarola’s deeply rooted RomanCatholic faith strongly influenced him to focus his life’s work on helping others. In 2012, PopeBenedict XVI bestowed upon him the Papal Honor of Knight Commander of the Holy Order of St. Gregory the Great.

Robert J. Adams, Sr. Robert John Adams Sr. of New Hyde Park passed away on February 20, 2013. He was born in November 1933 and was the husband of Carol Ann; father of Robert Jr. ‘80 (Lisa ‘80) & Stephen ‘85 (Lisa); Bob was the longtime Head of the Procurement Department of Sperry Gyroscope Corp. in Lake Success, NY. He was a proud Marine and graduate of St. John’s University and a life-long supporter of St. Francis Prep, first through the Father’s Guild and later as part of the SFP Golf Classic.

Tony Laino ‘00 Tony was killed on October 29, at the height of Hurricane Sandy, when a large tree crashed through his family’s house in Flushing. He was 29 and the youngest of Carol and Robert’s three sons (Bobby and Nick). His older brother, Nick ‘97, who delivered his eulogy, recalled, “My brother Tony would light up any room he walked into, whether you knew him or not. He had an infectious smile and personality.” Friends immediately started a donation drive to help the Laino family rebuild their home, with an initial goal of $8,000 and it surpassed the $50,000 mark within a week. His friends and family will always remember him and cherish each moment they had with him.

Brother Robert Smith, OSF ‘47 Brother Robert (John D. Smith) died on June 10, 2013, after a brief hospitalization. The second son of John and Mary Smith, he attended St. Patrick’s elementary school and St. Francis Prep, both in Brooklyn. Brother Robert entered the Franciscan Novitiate February 14, 1947, received the habit on August 17, 1947 and was first professed August 18, 1948. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from Fordham University (1957), a Master’s Degree from St. John’s University (1960) and an Honorary Doctorate from St. Francis College (1998). Between 1949 and 1955, he taught at various elementary schools in Brooklyn and Long Island and in 1955 was assigned to St. Francis Prep as a teacher and then later as Assistant Principal. Brother left the Prep in 1961 and for the next two years was an Instructor at St. Francis College. Brother Robert was elected to the Superior

Monsignor James J. Cooney Our beloved former Chaplain Msgr. Jim Cooney passed away on May 6, 2013 at the age of 81. Born in Brooklyn, he attended St. Mary’s College, St. Mary, KY. and Mount St. Mary Seminary, Emmitsburg, MD. He was ordained May 30, 1964 at St. James Pro-Cathedral, Brooklyn, by Bishop Bryan J. McEntegart. He served as an assistant at Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Maujer St., Williamsburg, 1964-66; Our Lady of the Presentation, Brownsville, 1966-74; and was spiritual director at Prep, 1974-92. He served as pastor of Holy Rosary, Bedford-Stuyvesant, 1992-96, and at St. Clare, Rosedale, 1996-2007. He also was spiritual director at Cathedral Prep Seminary, Elmhurst, 2007-2010. He was named a monsignor in 1988. While at Prep, Msgr. Cooney was well-loved and respected by generations of Prep students.

Dennis J. Carey Jr. ’36 Dennis passed away on February 26, 2013 at the age of 95. Mr. Carey was born in Brooklyn in 1918, to Dennis J. and Margaret (Collins) Carey. He attended St. John’s University and St. John’s University School of Law. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and the Korean War, achieving the

The Most Reverend Ignatius A. Catanello Titular Bishop of Deultum and Retired Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, died after a lengthy illness on Monday, March 11, 2013 Bishop Catanello lived and served in the Diocese of Brooklyn his entire life. The son of the late Nicholas and the late Mary (DeFalco) Catanello and the brother of Deacon Joseph Catanello, he was born on July 23, 1938. He was a parishioner at Most Holy Trinity parish, in Williamsburg, where he attended the parish elementary and high school. He studied for one year at the seminary of the Order of Recollects of St. Augustine in Kansas City, Kansas, and then spent three years at Cathedral College, Brooklyn. Father Catanello was ordained to the priesthood on May 28, 1966, at St. James Pro-Cathedral, Downtown Brooklyn.

General’s Council of the Franciscan Brothers in 1961 and continued as a General Consultor until June 2003. He also served as Director of Camp Alvernia (1956), Master of Scholastics (1961-1964), Treasurer General (1962-1976), and Secretary General (1985-1988). Brother Robert served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Saint Francis College (1961-2005) and as a member of the Boards of Trustees of St. Francis Prep and St. Anthony’s High School.
