President’s Message Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. Dear Graduates and Friends, As I complete my third year as President of St. Francis Prep, I look around at the whirlwind of activity here (even during the summer) and marvel at the quality and the accomplishments of our student body, faculty and staff. With this in mind, we have taken the opportunity in this issue of Grad News to celebrate the commitment of many dedicated alumni who have returned to the Prep and currently serve as administrators, teachers and staff members. It is because of the tremendous efforts of our faculty and staff (aided of course by YOUR support) that we continue to offer such outstanding academic and extracurricular programs for more than 2500 wonderful students who come from all walks of life—and who SUCCEED as evidenced once again by the fact that every member of the Class of 2016 (608 seniors) graduated in June and nearly every one (99.1%) will be attending college this fall—including many of the most prestigious schools in the country. As a group, they were offered more than $150 million in college scholarships! The talent of our faculty and staff also resulted in the recent awards presented by the Middle States Association of first-ever high school level credentials for our ART and GUIDANCE Departments. This follows the first-ever Middle States Association credential presented at the high school level to our MUSIC Department. And in keeping with this unparalleled level of excellence we have established at Prep, we are continuing with our Capital Improvement and Modernization Program with the current construction that will result in a very modern, spacious music department (some of which you can see already) together with new student/athletic locker room facilities. This follows the complete re-design and construction of our science labs which occurred some three years after the dedication of beautiful new Physical Fitness and Art Education facilities—all of which we have funded in large measure through The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150. Needless to say, we could never accomplish all these things nor could we provide all the resources we do for our students without your continued generosity. You help us maintain affordable tuition levels, fund special projects and programs, and provide financial assistance and scholarships for many deserving students. So thank you again for everything you do for the Prep! These Grad News pages will remind you once again of the numerous events and activities that help keep you connected with us and with your classmates. The 2015 Annual Walk-a-thon

Raises over $280,000 for Prep’s Programs and Facilities Friday, September 26th was a wonderful day for faculty/ staff and students as St. Francis Prep hosted its fifth annual Walk-a-thon fundraising event. The SFP Cheerleaders and the SFP Jazz Band and Percussion group motivated students from beginning to end. There were smiles, laughter and “selfies” being taken along the nearly two mile route! Prizes were awarded to the top Cors and three individuals who obtained the highest levels of sponsorships in several categories. Over the past five years, the SFP Annual Walk-a-thon has raised over $1.4 million to benefit special projects and programs at the Prep, most notably the current Capital Improvement and Modernization Project. Your generous contributions and pledges are being put to very good use each and every day for the benefit of our students! Two years ago, our Science Classrooms and Labs underwent an entire “floor to ceiling” renovation. This year the redesign and reconstruction of the Music Education facilities began and is now one third complete. There are several new music classrooms and practice facilities currently in use. Work will continue in phases over the course of two years and the end result will be highly advanced learning, practice and performance spaces for our award-winning music students as well as a new dance studio and renovated student locker rooms. The Campaign for St. Francis Prep: The Next 150 (Stage Two of our Capital Campaign that benefits this Modernization Program) will continue through 2017. This year the Walk-a-thon will be held on Friday, September 30, 2016.

Annual Mass of Remembrance On Sunday, November 1st, hundreds of alumni, family and friends gathered for the Prep’s Annual Alumni Memorial Mass and Brunch. Father Bill Sweeney H ‘03, Chaplain at the Prep and Brother Leonard Conway. The newly added memorial bricks and other memorials on “The Pathway to St. Francis” were also blessed and dedicated prior to the Mass. The Franciscan Heritage Display, which was named in Loving Memory of Elizabeth Prendergast (see photo below) was also blessed. Prior to the start of Mass, Isabella Romanelli ‘17 & Elizabeth Romanelli ‘19 were awarded The Michael F. Lynch ’86 Memorial Scholarship; Onandi Lowe ‘16 was presented The Bernice & James E. McHugh H’92 Scholarship Award.

The Annual Christmas Party for Our Friends With Special Needs When Sister Joseph Agnes first organized this event so many years ago, she started more than just a tradition. The Prep Community hosted its Annual Christmas Party for our Friends with Special Needs on Saturday, December 19th. Alumni, current students, faculty and staff all pitched in and worked sideby-side to serve those who might otherwise not find such joy and spirit in the Christmas season. There was Music, dancing, food and fun, and of course SANTA!! There were performances by the Prep Chamber Orchestra and Step Team. Faculty Coordinator, Suzanne Pergola-Camus said, “It was a wonderful day! Thank you to everyone who volunteered and donated to this amazing day: The Parents’ Guild, Alumni Board, Students, Faculty, Staff, and Administration, Fr. Mark, the Franciscan Brothers, CulinArt, Italian Club, Greek Club, Key Club, Softball Team to the Dance Team, Step Squad and Chamber Orchestra whose performances brought such joy to all those in attendance. You all are living Instruments of Peace and exemplify the true meaning of Franciscan Values. Thank you all!” We look forward to the coming year —Saturday, December 17, 2016. As always, we ask for whatever you can provide to make the day that much more memorable for our special guests. Appropriate gifts (which can be dropped off at Prep) would include: PJ’s, slippers, scarves, hats, gloves, toiletries, picture frames, wallets, purses, perfumes, colognes, ties, etc. Gifts can be wrapped and should be marked either Male or Female and dropped off at Prep right up until the day of the party itself.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators and Franciscan Brothers marched up Fifth Avenue in the annual NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade. It’s a tradition that dates back to the days when SFP was located in Brooklyn. Revived during the Prep’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary in 2008, it has been growing stronger in both spirit and in the numbers every year since. Join us for next year’s St. Patrick Day Parade on Friday, March 17, 2017. Be sure to RSVP early to reserve your commemorative hat! Celebrating SFP Football Past, Present & Future From the moment people walked into the beautiful Magnolia Room at Bourbon Street on April 29th, there were smiles...long overdue hugs...and people having fun! Drinks, food, and music added to the festivities! Tradition & Pride was met with generous support from Prep Alumni of all ages! All of the tables stayed busy throughout the night! The money booth became “10 seconds of comedy” as all the adults went crazy attempting to stay cool while money flew by them. Through loyal alumni and friends generous support, the “Friends Of St. Francis Prep Football Fund” defrays tuition costs and represents a real savings for young student athletes and their families, helping St Francis Prep continue on its mission to be a leading Catholic High School in the Franciscan tradition and the St. Francis Prep Football Program to remain the greatest high school football program in the NY Metropolitan Area.”

The Annual President’s Dinner Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. hosted the Annual President’s Dinner on Saturday, April 9th in the Prep’s library. This annual event is the Prep’s salute to the loyal alumni, parents, faculty, staff, trustees and friends whose generosity at the “leadership” giving level helped St. Francis Prep in many wonderful ways during the past year. Nearly 200 guests were in attendance for cocktails and dinner, including Conrado “Bobby” Gempesaw, the President of St. John’s University, together with his wife, Clavel. The St. Francis Prep String Orchestra, under the direction of Music Department faculty member, Robert Johnston, provided musical entertainment. During dinner, Bro. Leonard delivered an update on all of the latest developments at the Prep. SFP Principal, Patrick J. McLaughlin ‘73 provided an overview on the many academic achievements of our students. Afterward, two student representatives of the Class of 2016 Mary O’Byrne and Michael Lynch, each spoke about how the faculty, staff and their fellow students helped inspire them. (Mary is now attending the University of Michigan and Michael is studying at Sacred Heart University.)

23rd Annual Golf Classic Honors Prep’s Finest! On Monday, June 20, 2016 the 23rd Annual Golf Classic was held at Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, NY. After golfers played on a superb course and enjoyed an outstanding cocktail hour, nearly 200 guests dined on a delicious buffet dinner as we honored Larry ‘67 and Gerry DiNardo ‘70 and SFP Music Department Chair, Dr. Robert Corbino H’06. Each of them spoke about their great affection for St. Francis Prep. Hoops Tournament in Memory of Jimmy Prendergast ’79 & James Prendergast H’11

Homecoming Weekend began on Thursday evening with a Threeon-Three Basketball Tournament on Thursday, October 1, 2015 in the Prep’s Gym. Over 100 alumni, friends and members of the Prendergast family participated. Raffle, prizes and refreshments were all part of the evening. The 4th Annual Golf Outing and BBQ in memory of Dan Apicella ‘00 was held at Clearview Golf Course on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015. It was another successful year. All proceeds of the event support the Scholarship Fund established in Danny’s memory.

On Monday August 15, 2016, the 5th Annual Dan Apicella Memorial Golf Outing and Scholarship Dinner was held at Inwood Country Club. The first-ever Daniel Apicella’00 Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Jayden Sutton ‘17 by the committee. A Night at Sullivan’s On Friday, October 2, 2015 more than 200 alumni, friends and family members participated in the annual Homecoming Night at Sullivan’s. There were plenty of raffle prizes, food and drink. The event organizers, Kevin Wagner ’01, Jonathan Pereira ’99, and Jimmy Lynch ’99 expressed their appreciation to everyone for coming out for the Prep and in memory of their good friend and fellow Prepster, Danny Apicella ‘00.

Homecoming Day at the Races Alumni, family and friends gathered last October at Belmont Park for the Annual Homecoming Day at the Races. The weather was mixed and each of the races were exciting. Guests were invited to the Winner’s Circle to meet the jockey who rode the winning horse in the race dedicated to St. Francis Prep. Aside from the winnings at the betting windows, one lucky guest took home the proceeds of our 50/50 Raffle.

Annual Spring Reunion & Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Saturday, April 23, 2016 • The Annual Spring Reunion and Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony provided a great opportunity for alumni to remember the reasons why St. Francis Prep was “a second home” for so many of us! The Classes of 1966, 1961, 1956, 1951, 1946 and 1941 were recognized as the newest members of the Golden Terrier Society— an honor bestowed upon alumni who have celebrated the 50th, 55th, 60th, 65th and 70th anniversary of their graduation. The group was presented with special medals and enjoyed their cocktails and dinner in the library. The 25th anniversary Class of 1991 along with the Classes of 1986 1981, 1976 and 1971 gathered in the cafeteria. (See images below and on the following pages.)

SFP Alumni Regional Alumni Chapter Events The Greater Washington, D.C. Area Alumni Chapter Reception Alumni gathered in the heart of the nation’s capital at Bobby Van’s for another delightful chapter gathering. Alumni Board President, Wally Bishop ’80 and Alumni Director, Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F. welcomed everyone. Robert Angeletti H’11, the Prep’s Director of Development provided a overview about all of the wonderful developments at Prep. Prep’s President, Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F. spoke about all of the one-on-one meetings he’s had with alumni over the past year. “I am delighted to say that your fellow alumni have been very enthusiastic about all the work that we are doing to modernize and upgrade the Prep. “ The Greater Washington D.C. Area Alumni Chapter President William “Billy” Ashton ’76 and Brother Robert are constantly working to help Prep alumni from the Maryland, Delaware, Virginia area reconnect with classmates and meet their Prep “neighbors.” This year the Greater Washington D.C. Area Alumni Chapter Reception will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2016. Philadelphia Alumni Chapter Nearly 40 Prep alumni from the Philadelphia area enjoyed an extraordinary dinner prepared by up-and-coming culinary students on Thursday, September 17th. The whole restaurant at JNA Institute of Culinary Arts was reserved exclusively for St. Francis Prep Alumni and all of the food was prepared and served by students. Prep’s President, Brother Leonard Conway spoke about the amazing developments at the Prep —most notably the Prep’s Capital Improvement and Modernization Program. Special thanks to the Philly chapter’s local organizers, Danny Sosa ‘96 and Moises Young ‘96, for their help in developing plans for this event. Boston Area Alumni Chapter St. Francis Prep’s tenth annual reception for alumni in the Greater Boston Area was held at Maggiano’s Little Italy on Thursday evening, April 14th. It was an intimate gathering of about a dozen alumni who ranged from recent grads enrolled in area colleges and universities to alumni from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. It was a wonderful time for everyone to learn about the latest developments at the Prep over a “family-style” dinner.

Florida Area Alumni Chapter Baseball Game & Reunion Marc J. Hamlin ’84 and his wife, Paige were our gracious hosts once again as we celebrated our 20th Annual St. Francis Prep Alumni Florida Reunion on Saturday, March 5th, 2016 in Valrico, Florida, (a suburb of Tampa). This annual gathering in Florida alternates between east and west coast locations each year. As in past years, we reserved group tickets for a spring training baseball game and enjoyed watching the Yankees vs. the Boston Red Sox at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The reunion at the Hamlin’s followed at 6:00 pm and it was another splendid gathering. Prep’s President, Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F., provided an overview on the many exciting developments at the Prep, which included the newly remodeled science classrooms and labs. Alumni Director, Brother Robert Kent, O.S.F. reported on the past year’s roster of well-attended alumni events and Development Director, Robert Angeletti H’11 reported on the many successful fundraising efforts. Prep’s Principal, Patrick J. McLaughlin ‘73 was also in attendance and enjoyed his conversations with the alumni in attendance. SFP Alumni Professional Chapter Events Face-to-face networking is an essential aspect of most any career. With this in mind, you can connect with fellow alumni through the SFP profession-based chapters. These chapter events endeavor to help Prep alumni in their career development, professional growth and enable alumni to reconnect with each other and discover up to the minute news and information about the students and programs at St. Francis Prep. The most recently established professional chapters are for alumni in Education, the Arts and Technology. The Education Alumni Chapter held its third annual chapter reception in May, while the Arts Alumni Chapter held a second very successful alumni reception in April. The Technology Alumni Chapter presented a well-received webinar last September on the topic of social media. The Healthcare Services Alumni Chapter & Legal Services Alumni Chapter Reception

These two chapters are currently in the fourth year of jointly hosting their annual reception. The SFP Healthcare Alumni Chapter is a community of alumni employed in all aspects of healthcare, including health education, health care administration, nutrition, medicine, dentistry, etc. Nancy Demers ‘91 and Joseph Pantaleo ‘03 are the chapter coordinators. The SFP Legal Services Alumni Chapter offers a network for alumni who share the dual bond of the Prep experience and work in the legal profession. St. Francis Prep’s inaugural reception for alumni who work in the Arts (film, TV, photography, design, painting, drawing, theatre, dancing, music, architecture, fashion, etc.) was held on Thursday evening, April 7th on the west side of Manhattan. More than 55 alumni (and several members of the faculty) participated. They ranged from recent graduates to seasoned professionals. Bro. Ask any of our administrators, faculty members, staff members, or coaches who enjoy the distinction of having been educated at St. Francis Prep the following question: What brought you back to the Prep? Their answers will center around two common themes: a sense of “community” that exists at the school; and the Franciscan Spirit that is ever-present in day-to-day activities. Of the more than 150 individuals who serve on the faculty/staff at Prep, 56 are graduates of the school. They all love what they do and were inspired by a teacher, coach or a Franciscan Brother to “come back” and to “give back” to a new generation of Prep students. St. Francis Prep’s President, Bro. Leonard Conway, OSF has always said, “Many alumni want to teach and work at Prep and that’s a great testimonial to what a wonderful job our faculty and staff members do in the classroom, in the various departments, and on the courts and playing fields. I think that it has a everything to do with our Franciscan spirit and the sense of community that you find here.” Patrick McLaughlin ‘73, who had served for more than two decades as a coach, teacher, and Assistant Principal, and was named Prep’s Principal three years ago, said “Prep was transformative for me. When I was a student, Prep was located in Brooklyn and the Franciscan Brothers were fantastic. Back then I would often think, ‘If I were a teacher, I’d want to be like these guys.’ He went on to say, “It is wonderful to see the traditions and spirit continue. Our Alumni appreciate what Prep did for them and they want to give back to the school they love.” However, Prep doesn’t place nostalgia above high standards. McLaughlin continued, “Alumni are hired on their qualifications and not because of the novelty that she/he’s an alumn.” As a result, the Prep can boast about having one of the highly credentialed faculty at the high school level. Long time Religion teacher and newly appointed assistant to the Athletic Director, Phyllis Gambino-Skody ‘90 points out, “The values that were instilled in me are values that are still being taught here today.” Phyllis is committed to ensuring that every one of her students is aware of those values and her Terrier spirit and devotion is evident when she takes the time to attend Prep Alumni class reunions to meet her former students. Life is a Journey Music teacher, David Kobayashi ‘93 , who was a practicing attorney said, “I wasn’t planning on it [teaching], but I had a few months to spare between waiting for my bar exam results and starting at a law firm where I’d been interning.” In the interim, Dr. Robert Corbino, Music Department Chair, invited Dave to coach the SFP Marching Band and then later asked him to teach part-time. He did for a brief time, and then left the Prep to practice law. He did so for four years before feeling a calling to return to the school. Looking back on his journey he says, “I just missed it too much.” For many schools, attracting their own alumni to take on teaching as a career is considered a hallmark of institutional success. David says, “I think that we are proof that what they’ve taught us 32 St. Francis Preparatory School

at Prep works...especially for those of us who had a productive career in the outside world.” Peggy Bergin-Sementilli, Chair of the Religion Department and Class of 1981 alumna, always had hopes of coming back to SFP to teach English (her undergraduate major). She had been working in Manhattan as an event planner for a Fortune 500 company and later on for a non-profit organization. She was also heavily involved in the Diocese of Brooklyn doing youth/young adult ministry. After five years, she began to pursue her Masters’ Degree in Education so that she would be ready for a transition to her original goal of teaching. While at Mass one Sunday, she heard prayers for a friend who had been in a car accident—this friend was

Thomas Wolfe once wrote, “You can’t go home again.” Bro. Robert Kent differs. He says, “You can come back to the Prep anytime!” Marie Mackey (now Sister Marie Mackey, CSJ) who had just begun teaching the week before at SFP. Peggy recalls how something she said in jest came to fruition. “When I called to see how Marie was doing, she told me that while she would eventually be fine physically, it was stressful to be out of work for 6-8 weeks when she had just started a new job—especially with colleagues whom she barely knew covering her classes.” Peggy sympathized with her and said jokingly, “Hey, if you need a sub, maybe I could be available!” Within the hour, her phone rang and it was the chairperson of the Religious Education Department at Prep asking her if she would consider filling in. Peggy says, “Well...I

did... and I truly ‘fell in love’ with SFP and teaching high school religious education.” A permanent position opened up shortly after Ms. Mackey returned to Prep. That was 27 years ago! Everything Happens for a Reason Prep’s Athletic Director, Sal Fischetti ‘83, worked summers at Camp Alvernia, (operated by the Franciscan Brothers) alongside Brother Leonard Conway, who was the camp’s Director at the time. After college, Sal moved to Florida with the intention of becoming a professional umpire with Major League Baseball. His plans changed a few months later and he returned home to New York. “I put pursuing professional umpiring on hold.” Fischetti says. He reconnected with Prep and was offered an opportunity to substitute teach and then was offered a fulltime teaching position. He’s often one of the first to arrive each morning. “I love what I do and I look forward to the start of every school year,” he says. The 2016-17 academic year marks his 30th year. Sal says, “You just can’t replace the spirit and enthusiasm that alumni bring to the community.” Reflecting back on his dream of becoming an umpire he says, “Everything happens for a reason.” English teacher, Eric Hafker ‘86 working in publishing for a half dozen years before returning to Prep to teach. “What inspired me to return to my alma mater to teach was a combination of comfort, confidence, and commitment. And timing. “I could have kept the alliteration going with “coincidence,” but there’s no such thing as coincidence-only destiny, fate, and sometimes miracles,” he says with his trademark wit and candor. “I believe most of my fellow Prep grads now teaching here would say God had a hand in them coming home to make a difference. I know I can say it with conviction.” Returning to the classroom after being away from teaching for a long time was a bit daunting. He found a comfort level at SFP saying, “Where else but Prep would make me feel welcomed by former teachers, kind students, and provide an inspiring atmosphere of faith and learning?” He also attested to his

only place on earth where going to work feels like coming home.” Social Studies teacher, Abe Leston ‘96 knows a thing or two about the value of “home.” Abe was born in Spain and moved here when he was 8 years old. Having moved thousands of miles away, he says fondly, “Prep made me feel like I was home again.” His experience and the perspective it provides him is truly valuable to the Prep student community, particularly in recent years as the number of foreign born students has increased. “I can totally relate,” he says. “These individuals are some of the Prep’s most enthusiastic and dedicated champions,” said Alumni Board President, Wally Bishop ‘80. Building on a Foundation of Excellence All those who have experienced St. Francis Prep first-hand, especially our alumni faculty and staff members, understand that Prep has long been a tightly-knit community based upon shared values and common goals. Working toward the same goal with shared values creates strong bonds among students and between the students and their teachers and coaches. From the employee perspective, it strengthens teamwork. Assistant Principal and Class of 1987 alumnus Chris Mendolia, points out, “The sense of community is what raises collaboration among the faculty to such a high level here and gets everyone feeling united in shared goals.” That’s evident in how the Prep community banded together to achieve the academic and faith-based goals set in the Middle States re-accreditation process. (These goals include everything from improving the use of technology in the

classroom to greater student involvement in retreats, service opportunities, and their own spiritual development.) The process requires the effort and commitment of an entire community. The level of cooperation is evident in the results. “The number of our academic departments which have been recognized with the Middle States Programs of Distinction is truly impressive,” said the Prep’s Director of Admissions, Lisa Schaefer-Heuer ‘87. Schools desiring to improve their programs have the opportunity to undertake the Middle States Programs of Distinction protocol (formerly known as “credential”) to identify strengths and areas for growth. The Programs of Distinction process then provides the inspiration and the means for developing a high-quality program. In 2011, Prep was the very first high school ever to earn the Middle States Music Credential.

Looking Ahead Brother Leonard is encouraged by all of those who serve the Prep as administrators, teachers, staff members, or coaches. He said, “It’s uplifting for me to see how our alumni embrace the Franciscan spirit and put their faith into action in the service of the Prep community.” He concluded by saying, “They all continue to make the Prep the great place that it is today.”

St. Francis Prep has steadfastly remained committed to fostering the intellectual and spiritual development of students from all walks of life, while continually improving the educational environment for its students. This summer, Phase III of St. Francis Prep’s Modernization Program continued with the redesigning and re-construction of the Music Education facilities. (This follows the fabulous re-design and total renovation of the Science labs and classrooms.) This modernization effort, which originally began during the Prep’s 150th Anniversary in 2008, has been dictated by the demands of a truly outstanding teaching and learning environment.

Brother Alan Zodda, O.S.F. Celebrates 65 Years as a Franciscan Brother Bro. Alan Zodda, O.S.F., entered the Franciscan Brothers from Our Lady of Peace parish, Lynbrook, L.I., in 1951 and professed first vows in 1953. He taught in the elementary schools at Our Lady of Good Counsel, BedfordStuyvesant; St. Anthony of Padua in Greenpoint; Our Lady of Lourdes, Bushwick; and St. Patrick’s, Fort Greene, from 1953 to 1962, before teaching at St. Leonard’s H.S., Bushwick; Bishop Ford H.S., Park Slope; and St. Francis Prep, (both Brooklyn and Fresh Meadows), from 1962 to 1975. Beginning in 1975, Brother Alan served as an administrative assistant at St. Francis Prep until he retired from full-time ministry. This year he is celebrating his 65th Anniversary as a Franciscan Brother. At Prep, Brother Alan taught World History and American History and began a long and momentous journey that entailed coaching handball. Something truly amazing began to happen after his first year of coaching—he embarked upon an unprecedented record in the whole history of St. Francis Prep handball. The Varsity Team established at 12 year winning streak of 159 victories and the Varsity Juniors set a 101 winning streak from 1969 to 1980. On October 26, 1974 he was presented with the Sports Illustrated Merit Award. Bro. Alan said, “As I look back, I realize just how devoted the boys teams were to my coaching style and to my requirements. These boys accomplished so much... We accomplished these feats working together with enthusiasm and commitment.” Brother Alan is equally proud that the great days of handball

at the Prep are once again flourishing. Mr. Tony Grimm, the present handball coach, has made a name for himself by establishing a new winning streak. Brother Alan said, “I have felt a part of this new surge of victory, because I have always encouraged him to aim high and never settle for second-best. He is truly a dedicated coach and has managed to keep the handball legacy at the Prep alive.” Notably, the 2016 Varsity and Junior Varsity Undefeated teams were the C.H.S.A.A. City Champions! Over the past four decades that Brother Alan has been involved in the Physical Education Department, he served as an Assistant Coach in Girls’ Varsity Softball, and assisted at Football, Basketball and Baseball games. On the occasion of his 60th Anniversary in 2009, Bro. Alan reflected, “Life has been good to me and I have been blessed by so many wonderful people who have enhanced my life as a Franciscan Brother. I give thanks and glory to Our Lord, Jesus Christ, and to His Blessed mother, Mary, for their countless blessings in my life all through the years.” Bro. Alan was recognized by the St. Francis Prep Alumni Board as an Honorary Alumni in 2005. In April 2016, the Franciscan Brothers determined, after a series of evaluations, that Bro. Alan was in need of additional care that could not be provided at the Brother’s residence at Prep. Brother Alan relocated to Our Lady of Consolation Nursing Home in West Islip, NY.

In the footsteps of Saint Francis by Brother James McVeigh, O.S.F.,

Mission Coordinator for our Franciscan Schools This summer, we have already had many in our Prep community experience the beauty of our Franciscanism. The Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn have appointed Bro. James McVeigh to serve as the Franciscan Mission Coordinator for our Franciscan Schools. He will be leaving the Office of Vicar for Religious in the Diocese of Rockville Centre so he can devote full time to this new ministry. Over the past ten years Brother James has developed this program here at St. Francis Prep. He will also serve at Saint Anthony’s H.S., and will be a resource person to Notre Dame HS and collaborate with St. Francis College. The Franciscan Mission, Charism and Values have always been present in our schools. We are now taking it to the next step to be intentional in promoting and living out the beautiful charism of St. Francis of Assisi and the gospel values St. Francis taught us by being the Mirror of Christ. We will actively engage the adult and student school community by intentionally inviting them to “Look to Christ” through the lens of our Franciscan Charism and Values and to share in the mission of the Franciscan Brothers.

The Music Department’s trip to Assisi and Rome--two cities central to our Franciscan heritage-- gave them an opportunity to enjoy the culture and Franciscan spirit but also to lift people’s hearts to joy by their concert performances featuring our Jazz Band, Prep Chorus, and Chamber Orchestra,. St. Francis loved music and sharing it with others. Well done SFP Music Department!

The Franciscan Brothers have annually sponsored faculty/staff/administrators to participate in the Assisi Pilgrimage program. Monica Robertson and Joe Sciame ‘78 were our Assisi Pilgrims this year and had the blessing of spending extended time catching the Franciscan spirit in Assisi and Rome.

We wish Brother James continued success in his ministry!

Campus Ministry Director, Christian Sullivan, Ed Woods ‘73 (IT) and Ellen Schuler (Math) visited St. Francis Secondary School in Lare, Kenya further solidifying our relationship with this mission conducted by our Irish Franciscan Brothers. Joe Pantaleo, DDS, an alum from the class of 2003 accompanied our faculty and performed dental evaluations and education at the several schools conducted by the Brothers in Lare, Kenya. They are always delighted to have the support of their American sisters and brothers. As usual the Prep was very generous to them through our Campus Ministry projects.

Franciscan Youth Movement (FYM) continues to distribute our various collections to Bridge for Life, Hour Children, etc. Our FYM Eye Glass Project has sent several hundred pairs of eye glasses to be re-calibrated and made available to the poor for free through a non profit organization

Our Service Academies, and the Lima Peru Franciscan Immersion Trip attest to our Franciscan mission and charisma being alive internationally and locally.

For two weeks this summer, I had the honor of accompanying Mrs. Ellen Schuler, Mathematics teacher, Mr. Ed Woods ‘73, Director of Technology, Dr. Joseph Pantaleo ‘03, and Dr. Meredith Gantos, to visit our twin school in Lare, Kenya. Our mission was to deepen our relationship and cooperation with St. Francis Secondary School (SFSS) through the newly established Kenyan Exchange Program. The experience was transformational on a professional and spiritual level. Each day we learned about a different component of Kenyan culture, the Diocese of Nakuru, the educational and medical systems, and daily life for the students and staff at SFSS. Our visiting dentists spent several days providing dental education and screenings to the students and staff. See the story on the next page. As educators, we observed classes, dialogued with faculty members, visited

local public and Catholic feeder schools, and answered endless questions about SFP, New York, and the United States. Our team was transported in the new vehicle that we helped purchase with our Lenten donations. Some highlights of the trip were the home visits of SFSS students; providing a special lunch for the student body; meeting

with the Most Reverend Bishop of Nakuru, Maurice Muhatia; the showing of Finding Nemo to the freshmen class; and visiting Lake Nakuru National Park. The Franciscan Brothers of Galway (Ireland) and Fr. James Mgue, pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, provided us with housing and amazing hospitality. Principal Philip Wanjohi and his team are achieving incredible results on a “shoe-string” budget. SFSS is the third highest ranked day school (school without boarders) in all of Kenya. They are transforming lives and it is an honor for us to share our Franciscan name and mission with them. At the closing liturgy, we were presented with gifts of friendship and words of thanks for our support. We sang together a song of hope asking God to further unite our school communities to “ . . . bind us together Lord. Bind us together Lord with cords that cannot be broken. Bind us together in love.”

Christian P. Sullivan, Ph.D. is the Director of Campus Ministry at St. Francis Prep. He is an advocate for issues of social justice and involved in his home community of Brightwaters, NY. He has ministered and served at Prep for the past 14 years. After several years of coordinating a Lenten Fundraising Drive for the benefit of St. Francis Secondary School, Dr. Sullivan conceived the idea for this exchange program and it received enthusiastic support from the Franciscan Brothers and all members of the Prep community. From an early age, Joe has been witness to and inspired by the Franciscan spirit; first as a student at St. Francis Prep and afterwards, while studying at St. Francis College. Joe says, “Without the experience and role models of being taught by the Franciscan Brothers, I would not be the person I am today.” Adding, “I have always tried to live as an example of St. Francis in my daily life.” Joe operates his private practice in 30 Central Park South in Manhattan, he is also the Director of Dental Care at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and holds an attending position at the Mt. Sinai Dental Department. This summer, (June 25 – July 9 ) he and a friend and colleague in the dental profession, Dr. Meredith Gantos, traveled to St. Francis Secondary School in Lare, Kenya alongside a contingent of Prep faculty/staff on a special mission. (See related story on previous page.) Their mutual aspirations as a dental professionals extends beyond providing excellent care within their respective private-practices. They felt the need to provide reach those abroad in remote areas who have no access to dental services at all. Joe recalled, “When I first met Meredith, her spirit naturally made me gravitate towards her and I have th

of being taught by the Franciscan Brothers, I would not be the person I am today.”

Joe exclaimed, “98% of the students we examined never saw a dentist their entire life.” They were able to conduct a Dental Education Class to each grade and distribute toothbrushes and introduce floss to a community that has never heard of or even seen floss! Reflecting on his experience he said, “Sometimes I feel selfish on these missions because these kids teach us lessons that are invaluable. All I can say is you never know the daily battles any one person is facing. So slow down, enjoy the present, and be patient. We enjoy a life of electricity, a bed and warm showers. These students pray for rain for the crops to grow and when it rains, the electricity goes out.” Power outages were common during their two week mission and forced them to improvise. Despite the daily inconveniences and hardships, Joe said, “I cannot wait to go back and give more of what I can for these kids.” Joe is another great example of someone who has taken inspiration and been called to action after repeatedly hearing the Prayer of St. Francis, “Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.”

A Message from Bro. Robert Kent, O.S.F., Alumni Director Dear Alumni and Friends, The 2015-16 school year is history. The Class of 2016 now can join the ranks of their predecessors who traveled this road over the years. We celebrate their incredible achievements. All of their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication are now being recognized across the finest schools in the nation. They reaffirm our Franciscan belief that academic achievement brings with it a complementary responsibility to help bring about a better world. They will have the opportunity, time and time again, to live out the lessons of service throughout their lives.

On Friday, October 2nd, we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi with a liturgy celebrated by Bishop James Massa. The Canticle Citation was presented to sister Philip Kiley, C.S.J., for her 40 years of service; Peggy Bergin Sementilli , Denise Heckleman and Ann Marie Rich for their 25 years of service; Rachel Binaso, Jeanne Buccino, Laurie Cappiello, Brian McCormack, Maureen O’Neill and Gina Rizzi-Lornenz were also recognized for their 15 years of service. This was a great time to celebrate all we have accomplished as a faculty and staff.

We can not overstate the depth of our pride in all they have accomplished. The credit for their success rests in the hands of our outstanding and dedicated faculty, staff and administration whose unfailing commitment to share their knowledge, expertise and guidance produced such a rich harvest.

I would like to take this time to recognize some special individuals who have made such considerable contributions to our Prep community and who are now retiring this summer. Let us bid fond farewell to Frank DeStefano for his 19 years of service in the Mathematics Department, Magda Ostaszewski for her 30 years of service in the Foreign Language Department; Dorothy Cassano for her 42 years of service as a secretary for the Athletic Department, Radiana Fitzpatrick for her 17 years of service in the Security Department; Nancy LoCascio, for 21 years of service as an administrative assistant in the Attendance Office; Cathie Colasanti for 19 years of service as an administrative assistant in the Attendance Office; Sister Rita McCauley, C.S.J., for her 35 years of service in the Social Studies Department and in the Educational Media Center; Frank Trubiano for his 19 years of service as the Chairperson of Library and the Educational Media Center. Finally, we recognize Maria Velazquez-Martinez, for her 11 years of service as an administrative assistant to the Development Office. All together this represents a combined total of 213 years of service to the Prep.

The Prep has embarked on an exciting journey of renewal and modernization, making the most significant investment in the future of the Prep since the move from Brooklyn to Fresh Meadows 40 yeas ago. The Phase III Plan for our exemplary and cutting-edge Music Program is already well underway and we expect it to reach completion by next summer. The impressive success in all aspects of Prep development only serves to underscore our fundamental mission: to provide an outstanding, well-rounded education in the Franciscan tradition to all the diverse students in the Prep community. We are grateful for the support from our alumni, parents and friends. Your extraordinary generosity is the catalyst for our growth, our pursuit of excellence and our unwavering commitment to develop future leaders of tomorrow. Let’s have a great turnout for our Homecoming Weekend. This year’s weekend will kick-off on Thursday evening October 20th with the 3-on3 Hoops Tournament in memory of Jimmy Prendergast ‘79 and James Prendergast H’11, following on Saturday, October 22, a Day at the Races at Belmont Park in the Turf and Field Club. Finally, on Sunday, October 23rd, we will have our 5K Fun Run in honor of our Legendary Track Coach, James McHugh H’92 and our September 11th heroes, followed by the Homecoming Football game against St. Joseph by the Sea at 1 PM at Martin Van Buren High School. We are pleased to announce our 2nd Red and Blue Terrier Ring of Honor Gala event to be held on Saturday evening, March 18, 2017 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on Long Island. At our inaugural event in March 2014, we inducted into our “athletic hall of fame” 68 past athletes, coaches, moderators and athletic directors, each of whom contributed greatly to the Prep’s proud sports history. The event was an extraordinary celebration attended by 750 alumni and friends of SFP. Once again we have established a distinguished Red and Blue Terrier Ring of Honor Committee that has planned for this special event and specifically selected our next class of honorees. In addition, for the first time, we will also be recognizing the accomplishments of several championship teams at Prep.

He was awarded the Bonze Star and the US Army Meritorious Service Medal. Gus Alfieri ‘55 and Sam Stith ‘56 will be inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame at the NYAC on September 14, 2016. Gus Alfieri won championships as a player and a coach and is the author of two books. His latest, The Heart of A Champion, trumpets the Golden Age of Long Island Basketball, from the late-1950s through the mid-1980s. In it he describes how he got into basketball, what inspired him to coach, and how he turned a troubled basketball team into the #1 high school team in NY State, #1 Catholic School in the country and the fifth best overall team in the nation. Sam Stith was a standout basketball player at the Prep and was selected in the 1960 NBA Draft by the Cincinnati Royals after a collegiate career at St. Bonaventure University. Sam and his brother, the late Tom Stith ‘57, were inducted into the SFP Hall of Fame in 2007. He is also the proud uncle of the talented tennis and volleyball Terrier athlete, Alana Davidson ‘15.

Joe Torre, Class of 1958 Hits Another “Home Run”

When facing a serious or terminal illness, many patients and their families are confronted with a tough spiritual challenge. A “last wish” experience can be a game-changer and play a vital role in promoting spiritual health. Terry (Conway) Van Slyke, was an avid baseball fan and reminisced about how much joy the game brought to her life and how she always admired the legendary player/coach, Joe Torre. Knowing that she was nearing the final stages of her life, her cousin, Prep’s President, Bro. Leonard Conway, reached out to ask Torre a special favor. In the true Franciscan spirit, baseball legend, Joe Torre, Class of 1958, placed a call to Terry. Bro. Leonard stated, “Joe Torre called my cousin Terry [today] and did more than make her day.... she is still smiling and keeps saying, HE CALLED ME!” The phone call was followed up the next day with a signed baseball which read: “Terry...to a True Yankee Fan...Think Win —with Respect” Joe Torre HOF ‘14. Terry passed away peacefully on March 6, 2016 knowing that the spirit of St. Francis was with her during her final days. May she rest in peace.

Remembering & Honoring Bob Crimmins ‘56 Robert J. Crimmins ‘56 had great affection for St. Francis Prep. Bob, as he was universally known, was committed to helping ensure the Prep’s future (in addition to his many other charitable endeavors), first as a Co-Chairman of the Prep’s Endowment Campaign in the 1990’s, and later as a Founding Committee Member (2008) for The Campaign for St. Francis Prep which continues today. He passed away on January 12, 2015 and the plan he put together for “giving back” reflected his dedication, affection and generosity toward St. Francis Prep. The Long Beach Island chapter of the Prep’s Alumni Association met for the 17th consecutive year on July 19th. As in past years the attendance was remarkable, tying the prior year’s record of four. Gene McCaul ‘57 (right) and Tom Prendergast ‘59 were recognized for having attended all 17 Reunions. They will be awarded leftover tee shirts from one of the Prep’s other events!!

John Mathis ‘59 and his wife, Mary (pictured above) met up with Brother Leonard for dinner while he was in town for the Florida Alumni Reception in March 2016. Kevin Sherry ‘66 retired from his Navy career as a Commander in 1993. He also worked at Northrop Grumman for 22 years and retired as a systems engineering department head in 2015. He is now an assistant football coach and an assistant track coach at Oxnard High in California. Larry DiNardo ‘67 is a partner at the prestigious law firm of Jones Day. He successfully argued a case before the Supreme Court in 2014. (The judgment was in favor of US Steel—represented by the Jones Day firm which assigned Larry as the key attorney.) The opinion was written by the late United States Justice Antonin Scalia! Larry and his brother, Gerry ‘70, were honored at this past June’s SFP Golf Classic. Dr. Gerard J. Hevern ‘68 was honored by the New Hampshire Academy of Family Physicians on April 9, 2016 as their NH Family Physician of the Year. In his acceptance remarks, expressed that he was profoundly thankful to the Franciscan Brothers saying, “...their lessons of peace, gratitude and mercy that have allowed me to serve my patients, especially those with chronic pain and addiction, with respect and kindness. For many of these patients who had lost hope and a sense of forgiveness, this “medicine” opened for some, the road to recovery.” Gerry also serves as the coordinator of our Greater Boston Area Alumni Chapter. Gaetano Mascolo ‘71 and his wife, Jean, have been married for 39 years and have four children and five grandchildren. He has been in the mortgage industry for 40 years and is currently employed with M&T Bank where he won “Chairman’s Club” for 7 straight years. Robert Ludwig ‘71 is married for 35 years and has two children. In 1981, he underwent a kidney transplant surgery and is one of the longest living transplant patients in the world. John Dennison Quinn ‘76 starting working and living in England in 1984 and has been there ever since. He and his wife, Annie, have two children. He is a long distance running and completed the Edinbrugh Marathon in Scotland in 2012. He sends his regards to his classmates and hopes to attend the next class reunion!

They were unable to attend the Annual Spring reunion because their first grandchild from their son and daughter-in-l;aw was due on the same se day! Dr. Jean F. Coppola, ‘82, has been selected by The Westchester County Association (WCA) to receive The WCA’s prestigious Women in Technology Award at their 4th Annual Women in Technology Award Luncheon on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Tappan Hill Mansion in Tarrytown. The award honors the women innovators and visionaries who are improving lives and moving our country forward, and encouraging the next generation of women scientists and mathematicians. Jean is an Associate Professor at Pace University in Information Technology and serves on the SFP Alumni Board of Directors. Congratulations Jean! Mary Curley Leptak ‘83, attended the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) awards event on April 17th. She was honored with the AATSP Metropolitan N.Y. Chapter 2016 Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award. Mary was nominated by her colleagues and unanimously chosen to receive the award. She received many outstanding letters of support, including those from her superintendent and principal which cited her outstanding professionalism as well as her ability to instill a love of learning in her students. Mary said, “I am grateful to St. Francis Prep for the great education I received.” Jim Gannon ‘83, founder of The Common Cents Program and has been hired by the British International School of New York in the role of In-Residence Instructor for the Fall 2016 semester. The role will require Jim to teach at the school one day a week starting in September. Common Cents has created a financial literacy course for the students and in addition, will be conducting a lunchtime club and an after school entrepreneurship club. Yaneley Arty ‘84 is a producer on the film The Perfect Match, which was in theaters in March 2016. The cast includes: Paula Patton & Terrance Jenkins in main roles, R&B singer Brandy, Donald Faison (Scrubs) and veteran Joe Pantoliano! Marc Hamlin ‘84 was promoted to Assistant Chief of Operations of the Tampa Police Department on May 15th 2016. He will be responsible for the entire patrol function and the agency’s crime reduction plan. Marc and his wife, Paige have been the gracious and generous hosts of St. Francis Prep’s Florida Alumni Chapter (west coast) Reunions for many years. In 2010, Marc was inducted into the St. Francis Prep Alumni Hall of Fame.

Prep Classmates, Salvatore Gangemi ‘86 and Doris Milevo ‘86 were also prom dates 30 years ago. They posed for another “prom photo” at their 30th Anniversary Class Reunion this past April.

Christina Olson Miller ‘86 is pursuing her doctorate at St. John University where she is also an adjunct professor. Her son, George, is a member of the SFP Class of 2020. Daniel Ryan ‘86 was inducted into the SFP Hall of Fame this year. He lives in Dix Hills with his three sons, Michael (21), Jonathan (18) and, Daniel (17). He has worked on the floor of the NYSE as a partner of E&J Securities for 25 years and serves as Floor Governor of the exchange. Dan also served on NAAR/Autism Speaks national board and is the Treasurer of Members Handicap Children’s Fund and National Board Member of POP Earth. Tara M. O’Grady ‘90 is an Irish American singer and songwriter. She recorded/produced four albums: Black Irish (2010), Good Things come to Those Who Wait (2011), A Celt in the Cotton Club (2013), and Irish Bayou (2015). Tara and her band will perform at the Cork Jazz Festival October 30th. The Cork Jazz Festival is an annual music festival held in Cork City, Ireland in late October every year since 1978. Alex Titolo ‘95 went on to study at American University in Washington to study international affairs. He became a foreign service office with the U.S. Department of State in 2002. His most recent posting abroad was as the head of public affairs at the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon). In that position, he coordinated the Consulate team’s support of President Barack Obama’s visit in May of 2016. Alex previous served abroad in U.S. Embassies in Montenegro, Lithuania, and the Dominican Republic, where he met his wife, Yinnet del Pilar Jimenez. They have two children, Christopher (4) and Sofia (1) and they current reside in the Washington D.C. area while assigned to State Department headquarters. Sandra D’Angelo ‘96 and her husband, Anthony have two children. She completed her internal medicine residency at NYU and oncology fellowship at Sloan Kettering. She is currently an assistant attending developing novel immunotherapy drugs for patients with sarcoma and Merkel cell carcinoma. Mary Elena Azzoli-Griffith ‘96 and her husband, John have two beautiful sons. She is the Director of Media Initiatives and Polling News at the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion where she directs the poll’s media initiatives. Prior to this she was working in news production at WNBC-TV in New York City.

High school is four years; Prep is forever! Julie Chen ‘87 hosts the hit reality show “Big Brother” by night and “The Talk” by day. She was the feature of a short piece in the New York Post recently, reminiscing about her Queens roots saying, “I’ve found, now that I’m older, I’m homesick. I like going back to the old neighborhood in Bayside and catching up with friends from high school [St. Francis Prep]. I’m still best friends with my high-school best friend, who lives part time in Queens and part time in Manhattan.” Julie has lent her talent to Prep in recent years by providing the voiceover narration for the Prep’s 150th Anniversary video in 2008. She was inducted into the SFP Hall of Fame in 2012.

Stephanie Laterza ‘97 is the author of the legal thriller, The Boulevard Trial (March 2015). Her short stories have been published in Writing Raw, Literary Mama and Akashic Books’ Terrible Twosdays series. Stephanie’s poetry has appeared in the Newtown Literary Journal, San Francisco Peace and Hope, Literary Mama and Meniscus Magazine. She holds a B.A. in English from Fordham College at Lincoln Center and a J.D. from New England Law School in Boston, where she studied Law and Literature. Her background as an attorney has paralleled her passion for creative writing, much of which focuses on first-generation ambition and struggle in the urban landscape of New York City. She lives in New York with her husband and son. Jonathan Pereira ‘99 and his wife, Melissa are happy to announce the birth of their son, Jack Michael in July 2016. Congratulations!

Ena Maureen Tua ‘07 and Rocio Tua ‘04 helped organize the 5K-Relief-for-Ecuador on Saturday, June 11th. Rocio said, “It was a true success. We had a great turnout and raised nearly $5,000 for the 5K race. All proceeds went to the Red CrossEcuador affiliate.” Pictured above are the many energetic participants!

George Dillman, SFP Class of 2000, was an employee of Con Edison performing routine electrical maintenance work when he was killed in a job related accident in 2008. His colleagues at Con Ed, together with friends and family members, organized an annual golf outing in his memory. Each year the event proceeds, along with other donations, are directed to the George Dillman ‘00 Memorial Scholarship Fund at SFP. Michael Wagner ‘03 a former social studies teacher at Prep left the classroom to follow his passion to educate students on the broader, deeper aspects of life. He founded a program in which he helps students instill their own confidence, build academic skills, and develop a greater understanding of the world. He says, “With both practical and philosophical mentorship, students will be in a better position entering into college having taken this course.” Check out his website at www.epic-mentoring.com Tom McKenna ‘11 signed a professional baseball contract to play this summer with the Tucson Saguaros of the Pecos League, an independent league based in the southwestern U.S. The former St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) standout became the first student-athlete in school history to continue playing professionally. McKenna holds several St. Joe’s records for batting, stolen bases and total bases. Rebeca Ramirez ‘14 is a sophomore at St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) and was recognized for her outstanding achievement in the classroom and on the women’s cross country team. She was named to the Skyline Academic Honor Roll, which distinguishes student-athletes in the league who compiled a 3.3 grade point average during the fall semester while competing in the conference’s seven fall sports. Congratulations Rebeca!

Congratulations to Allison Ferraris, SFP Class of 2013, who was recently named as part of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) 2015-16 All-Academic Sailing Team and ICSA’s 2015-16 AllAmerica Team. • The All-Academic Sailing Team recognizes collegiate sailors who have achieved excellence in national and interconference competition as well as excelling at the highest academic level for the 2015-16 academic year. • The All-American crew selections criteria include demonstrated leadership, outstanding body mechanics and boat

handling skills as well as proven ability to improve the results of the skipper(s) with whom he or she sails. There are a few other Terriers in her family— her sister, Tara Ferraris, is a member of the SFP Class of 2015 and her mother, Nancy Zollner Ferraris, is a graduate of the SFP Class of 1980. She is attending Boston College (Class of 2017) and is studying Political Science and History.

Celebrating 60 Years as a Franciscan Brother Bro. Adrian Fannon, O.S.F., entered the Franciscan Brothers from St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Greenpoint, in 1956 and professed first vows in 1958. He taught in the elementary schools at St. Joseph, Babylon; St. Mary Star of the Sea in Carroll Gardens; St. Anthony of Padua in Greenpoint; and Our Lady of Angels in Bay Ridge, from 1958 to 1968, before taking over as Principal of St. Brigid’s, Bushwick, and the Robert F. Kennedy Incentive Program, from 1976 to 2003. In 2003, he began teaching at St. Michael’s, Sunset Park; and later at Bishop Ford H.S., Park Slope. Bro. Adrian currently works in the Attendance Office at St. Francis Prep.

Farewell to Father Bill Sweeney Shortly before Thanksgiving the Prep community learned that Father Bill Sweeney was going to be reassigned to St. Francis DeSales Church in Belle Harbor as Associate Pastor. In an email message to the faculty and staff Father Bill said, “It has been such a great experience being here and working with such a dedicated and wonderful group of teachers, educators and people who make St. Francis the place it is. My 19 years here is something I will always be eternally grateful for!” We are extraordinarily indebted to Father Bill for all that he has done for the Prep community and wish him well! He will be missed!

Recognizing the Dedication of our Faculty On Friday, October 2nd, we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4th) with a liturgy by Bishop James Massa. This was a great time to recognize all we have accomplished as a faculty and staff. The Canticle Citation was presented to Sr. Philip Kiley, C.S.J., for her 40 years of service.

While in town for the SFP Alumni Florida West Coast Reunion in March 2016, Prep’s President, Bro. Leonard Conway reconnected with Father James Toal, O.F.M., SFP Class of 1950. Here’s the back story: When St. Francis Prep was located at 186 N. 6th Street in Brooklyn, Father James was a Franciscan Brother who was known as Brother Fabian. He served as the Prep’s Principal beginning in 1967. During his term he led the Prep through the social and political turmoil of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s when long hair and casual dress became school issues and The Seraph featured many Vietnam War editorials. Brother Leonard’s first assignment as a Franciscan Brother was teaching Math and Religion at Prep in 1971. It was 45 years ago this year, that they shook hands as Bro. Fabian welcomed Brother Leonard to the Prep as he began his career as a teacher. Brother Leonard remained with the Prep, while Brother Fabian’s vocation took a new direction in 1975 when he was ordained a priest (Father James Toal). After more than 40 years in educational leadership, he retired and moved to Florida.
