John Brennan H’08 Boys and Girls Tennis Coach

How does a baseball/basketball guy become a high school tennis coach for a quarter century? Well, as the saying goes, “Life happens when you’re making other plans.” As John explains it, “Regrettably my high school skills in baseball and basketball did not translate to the college level at St. John’s University.” So instead, he decided to take up tennis and found that he had some ability and love for the game. After two yeas of playing, he made the team as a walk-on. After playing for two years, graduation came and it was time to find a career. Once again his plans took an unexpected turn. John took the test for the NYPD, was interviewed, passed the background check and was put on the list. He told his parents that he was going on an “extended vacation” to Los Angeles and would return when the NYPD called. During this time, the economy in New York City suffered a severe economic slump and the city started letting officers go instead of hiring them. This unexpected turn of events prompted John to remain in Los Angeles and see if he could turn his tennis avocation into a career. Within a few years he had a teaching job at one of the largest private clubs in L.A. John said, “Life looked good and the future, bright... but, an proposes and God disposes.” In 1980, he was diagnosed with inoperable oral cancer and he was told that his only chance was heavy radiation and chemotherapy. Facing this serious trial, he decided to return to New York for family support. At this point, he notes is where “Divine providence seems to have played a hand in my future.” His mother worked

with a nun at St. John’s who knew a doctor at SloanKettering who was a world renowned cancer surgeon and arranged an appointment with him. “To my surprise he told me that he could operate on me and remove the cancer.” John recalled. When he asked how a team of doctors at UCLA could deem his cancer inoperable, the response was simple--they were wrong. After major surgery, radiation therapy and a couple of months recover, John returned to Los Angeles to resume his tennis career. By 1988 he had advanced in his tennis teaching career to become the Head Professional at the MountGate Tennis Club, one of the larges tennis clubs in Los Angeles with 1,200 members. Professionally, all was good but issues of faith began to influence John’s ambitions. A friend of his invited him to go along to a Protestant Church and since he wasn’t a practicing Catholic at the time, he decided to go. John recalls, “The pastor was excellent and a great guy but as I listened and did some research in Protestant Theology, I saw many logical inconsistencies and returned to the Catholic faith.” Faith became an increasingly important consideration in his ambitions. Eventually he decided to leave his position as Director of Tennis and return to New York and enroll in a graduate theology program at St. John’s. His plan was to get a Masters Degree then get a job teaching religion at a Catholic High School and coach tennis.

While still in graduate school, he met Brother George Roth, OSF as he was practicing with the SFP Boys Tennis Team. The two discussed Theology and Brother George asked him if he was interested in coaching the JV team. John accepted the offer.

27 years at Prep. God writes our lives straight with crooked lines.”

And in response to being one of the 2017 SFP Golf and Tennis Honoree, John says, “I know that this honor is because we have been the winningest program in the history of high school tennis, but my John earned his master degree in Theology, but faith tells me that God will have no interest in those additional surgeries further compromised his speech accomplishments. He concluded by saying, “Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. Thanks Prep for Reflecting on his life and career path, John’s say, paying me event though I have not worked for the “Although I had hoped to teach high school religion, last 27 years.” I feel incredibly blessed to have been able to coach for

Robert A. Waegelein, CPA ‘78 Assistant Coach, SFP Football Team

Bob Waegelein was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Douglaston, NY. The Waegelein family is a St. Francis family with Bob’s father, Robert F. ’52, and his sisters, Kathy ’76, Eileen ’83 and Heidi ’88, being proud alumni. During his four years at the Prep, Bob excelled in athletics earning 7 varsity letters. He started at linebacker on the 1976 CHSFL city champion football team and was captain his senior year. Bob also played first base on the ’77 and ’78 baseball teams and swam freestyle and butterfly for the swimming team from 1975 to 1978. He was President of the National Honor Society his senior year and received the Al Powers Memorial Award in 1978. After the Prep, Bob went on to Amherst College where he started 4 years of football and was named captain his senior year. After earning a degree in Economics in 1982, Bob joined the accounting firm of Peat Marwick in June 1982, attended graduate school at the

NYU’s Stern School of Business, earning his Masters in Accounting in September 1983 and later became a CPA. In his 8 years at Peat Marwick, Bob specialized in serving clients in the insurance industry, was responsible for recruiting students from the New England liberal arts colleges and instructed many of the training courses offered by the Firm. In October 1990, Bob moved on to become the Chief Financial Officer of Universal American, where he worked until his retirement as President in May 2015. During his tenure as CFO, the Company grew from a small New York insurance company with 20 employees to a nationwide company with 3,500 employees that was ranked #424 in the Fortune 500 largest public

companies in America. Bob’s primary business was providing insurance and health care solutions for the growing senior population in the United States. His activities included performing over 20 acquisitions and raising various forms of capital to support the growing business. In response to the government’s passing new Medicare laws in 2004 that allowed prescription drug coverage for the first time for the senior aged population, the creation of Universal American’s Prescription Pathways offered affordable access to much needed drugs and improved the health for two million seniors.

When Universal American Corp. began trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Bob Waegelein, the Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer and other high ranking members of the company were on the floor of the NYSE for the ringing of the opening bell on December 3, 2007.

After his retirement, Bob joined the Prep’s varsity football staff coaching defense, fulfilling a passion he has held for many years. He is a Trustee of Putnam Hospital Center, a member of the Finance Committee of HealthQuest Health Systems and on the Executive Committee of the Westchester Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Bob and his wife Anna, divide their time these days between Pawling, NY and Hilton Head Island, SC. They are proud parents of a son, Bob, and two daughters, Kerri and Jennie.
