Marist Education

The tradition of Catholic education that is known as “Marist” was begun by a French priest, Marcellin Champagnat, in 1817. Today, Marist schools, colleges, and universities are found in over eighty countries around the world, leading hundreds of thousands of young people to be what Marcellin believed each of them could be: good Christians and good citizens. As a Marist community, we help young people seek creative ways to become:

• Faith-filled disciples by nurturing their faith and commitment as disciples of Jesus, Mary and Marcellin and to be apostles to other youth.

• Empowered witnesses by educating them to be agents of social change, for greater justice towards all citizens in their own society, and for deeper awareness of the interdependence of nations.

• Agents of peace and justice by awakening their critical consciousness and helping them to make choices based on Gospel values.

• Servant leaders who are concerned for the least favored in our society and to help them discover their personal gifts and talents and utilize them to make a difference.

Message from the President

N

G

As Saint Joseph Academy opened its doors for the 152nd time this August, we were met with levels of excitement, vigor, and zeal that have been the highest I have seen in my three years as president of the school. We continue to enroll the best and brightest young men and women that the Rio Grande Valley has to offer. We are taking significant steps toward invigorating our curriculum. We witnessed our athletic teams capture the hearts of our community during playoff runs, district championships, and state meets. We hosted countless alumni at events throughout the year and celebrated the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Marist Brothers through joyous activities and service projects. Add to this our service and faith formation opportunities, our science lab renovation projects, continued enhancements of our 22-acre campus, new efforts to reach elementary age students, and our continuous efforts to strengthen our tuition-assistance program ensuring Saint Joseph Academy is accessible to anyone who would like to attend, and what you have is a school that never rests.

Over the past 152 years, much has changed, but what hasn’t changed is the lived experience at Saint Joseph Academy. Every day at Saint Joseph Academy, our faculty commit to making sure every student feels loved and cared for, following St Marcellin’s mandate of “In order to teach children, you must love them first.” What hasn’t changed is that Saint Joseph Academy is a place where parents sacrifice so that their children can have more opportunities and a better life for the next generation. Our academic standards, focus on mission, and our love for Mary are here to stay. Every day at Saint Joseph Academy we work to mold SAINTS and SCHOLARS.

I would like to thank all of you, our generous stakeholders, for investing in our students and the Saint Joseph Academy mission. It is through your spirit of generosity that we are able to meet the needs of our students and families. Thank you for all that you do to sustain and strengthen our efforts. You are as much of the Saint Joseph Academy story as we are and I invite you to continue with us on this journey.

Ad Astra Per Aspera, Michael Motyl | President

Message from the School Board Chairman

Dear Friends of SJA, This past summer, I had the opportunity to get together with some of my fellow SJA classmates of 1972 for our 45th class reunion. We began talking about our early years and that took me back some 51 years ago, when I was a quiet, timid seventh grader here at St. Joe. I remember vividly how apprehensive I was; unsure of myself, and a little low in self-esteem and confidence. But those first few years of the Marist mission and influence at St. Joe instilled in me the qualities of responsibility, self-worth, and an awareness of service to others. Helping others in need takes away the attention from yourself and did help develop those skills of communication and organization which were going to be vital for my college life. From the years 2000-2012, I became an active parent for my four children that attended St. Joe. Nothing spells involvement more than being in the booster club, selling concessions at the games, working at Taste of the Town, and selling ads for the football program. In 1999, I had the pleasure of being the first chairman of our school board. I have served since then on different committees under the leadership of six different presidents. However, one thing has not changed: the zeal and commitment of our administration to educate our young people, and to show them how to serve those that are less fortunate. During those 18 years, I have had the pleasure of knowing the different pieces of our puzzle as well: the staff and teachers of SJA. I have seen their unwavering commitment to the “mission of St. Marcellin Champagnat, showing the love of Jesus in our school, and in everything that we do at SJA. So as an alumnus, past parent, and committee and board member, I am well aware that our tuition alone does not cover the cost of educating a St. Joe student. With the assistance of our Academy Advancement team, we fill that gap with our advancement funds that are raised through different events and programs. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that help contribute to fill this gap through your gifts of time, talent, and treasure in your continued efforts in supporting St. Joseph Academy and our Marist mission here in Brownsville. God bless you! Emilio O. Hernandez | Chairman, SJA School Board (2016-2017) 2 0 1 6 - 2 0 1 7

Student Profile:

There are many amazing young men and women that attend Saint Joseph Academy, but Andres Treviño is one very special student that we are proud to call a Bloodhound! Andres was the 2017 graduating class’ valedictorian. He was also the recipient of the President’s Medal which is the highest achieving award at Saint Joseph Academy. In the fall, Andres will be studying finance at the prestigious Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Andres Treviño

2017 Valedictorian

One of Andres’s most memorable experiences at St. Joe was his participation in the Marist Youth Leadership Conference in Esopus, New York, during his sophomore year. He had the opportunity to meet with Marist students from across the US and the world and participate in leadership training and worship.

Andres credits St. Joe for providing him opportunities to grow mentally and spiritually. "I was able to be involved in my community through service with classes that pushed me to be a better student. One of the things I enjoyed the most during my senior year is that Mr. Lerma’s class, aside from learning about derivatives and other math concepts, almost always included talks about life, politics, and finance. One of the lessons that I learned from him was that with the right attitude, determination, and a mind

open to new ideas, yet rooted in God, a new world opens itself to us."

- Andres Treviño

Andres was the recipient of the 2017 Marist Heritage Award and Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. He is also an Eagle Scout and was a member of the SJA Varsity Swim Team, Brownsville Aquatics Team, Marist Youth, Green Team, Civics Youth, Canon Film Society, National Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, and Varsity Basketball Team.

New Science Labs

Helping students to excel in new fields of science and technology

Physics lab.

G

Saint Joseph Academy finds itself in a very competitive scientific environment. Therefore, several years ago, Saint Joseph Academy embarked on a capital campaign to raise money to replace 54 year old classrooms that were extremely outdated and no longer suitable for advanced instruction and lab experimentation needed for students to excel in the fields of science and technology. In order to address this issue and provide an environment conducive to appropriate instruction and learning, new classrooms and labs were needed to give our students the solid foundation they need to meet the requirements of our nation’s most competitive universities, opening important doors to generations of the Academy's students to compete and succeed in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

In 2016, Saint Joseph Academy began Phase One of the renovation project by completely gutting 3 classrooms and replaced them with one large state-of-the-art physics lab and a multi-purpose engineering room. Thanks to a generous benefactor, Mrs. Margret Hasse Cowen ‘78, the engineering room was equipped with zSpace computers which allow the students to learn through augmented reality and encourages engagement through exploration and experiential technology in a student-centered environment.

Phase Two of the science lab renovations continue as additional chemistry and biology classrooms and labs are in the process of being constructed and are expected to be completed in 2018. This renovation project could not have been made possible without the support of numerous benefactors including The Kenedy Foundation, Brownsville Foundation for Health & Education, Serafy Foundation and many more.

What’s New at SJA

The 2016/2017 school year was full of new beginnings and great additions at Saint Joseph Academy. A strong and enthusiastic team of administrators was hired beginning with Mr. Michael Motyl who was appointed by the Marist Province as the President of SJA. Mrs. Melissa Valadez ‘90 was promoted to Principal; Tino Villarreal was selected to be the Athletic Director; Donna Barron was hired as the VP of Academy Advancement and Alumni Affairs and Celeste Solis ‘91 was brought in as Director of Admissions. This team of administrators brings vitality and innovative ideas to the Academy.

Saint Joseph Academy added a few new course selections to the current rigorous Academic Course Bulletin. These new courses were University Prep class, AP Chemistry and a re-vamp of the Journalism class. Saint Joseph Academy has a new state-of-the-art physics classroom and lab allowing the students for optimal college preparatory learning. Additionally, a multi-purpose engineering room was built and outfitted with zSpace computers which allows students to interact through augmented reality learning.

SJA Field House.

Several new clubs were formed at SJA this year, as well. A Model UN club, Canon Film Society and SWAP – a student writers club were created. There is a little something for everyone’s interest at the Academy.

Thanks to the generous donation by Luis Carlos and Martha Rodriguez, Harry and Elizabeth Holzman, and the SJA class of 2012, a remodel of the SJA Field House was completed in honor of the late Carlos Emilio “Chiquito” Rodriguez, a member of the class of 2012.

Teens Helping Kids

Original members.

G

In 2008, a group of five Saint Joseph Academy juniors decided that they wanted to make a difference in their community and help underprivileged youth. Under the guidance of SJA parents, Robin and Rusty Brechot, the students formed a charitable group and called themselves Teens Helping Kids and set out to do just that.

They partnered with Monica and Maggie’s House, a child advocacy center for Cameron County and organized their first annual Celebrity Sports Dinner. Dallas Cowboy legend, Walt Garrison was their celebrity guest. While Monica and Maggie’s House sold tables for the event, the students raised money from local sponsors to cover the expenses such as the transportation and lodging of the celebrity guests, venue, catering and other event expenses. They contacted local figures to donate their time to serve as waiters. During the event, the waiters were encouraged to solicit “tips” from the attendees which was added to the proceeds of the evening. The students netted $58,000 which was distributed to other local youth centered non-profit agencies such as CASA, Moody Clinic, Tip of Texas Family Outreach, Guadalupe Regional Middle School and many more.

The following year, these students, now seniors at SJA, selected another five juniors to participate with them. Each year the tradition continued as the students served a two-year term as members of the Teens Helping Kids Board. The event continued to grow, raising more money each year, with as many as 30+ celebrity sports stars attending each year and more sponsors and event tables sold.

This year the 2017 event marked the 10th anniversary of the Teens Helping Kids Sports Celebrity Dinner. To date, the Saint Joseph Academy students have collectively raised over $900,000 for the community of Brownsville.

PAWS

Parents At Work Supporting SJA’s Faculty and Staff

G

Shortly after the new school year started, a group of dedicated parents formed a steering committee to establish a parent volunteer group to support the faculty and staff of SJA and its students. This group of parents met monthly to determine what services they could provide to enrich activities at the school, provide support for the hard working faculty and incentives for the students. This volunteer group call themselves Parents at Work or (PAWS) . Under the direction of the group’s organizer, Liz Harris ‘86, representatives from each of the grade levels were invited to join the steering committee. The members were: 7th Grade

Joanna Gomez ‘91 and Adriana Garcia

8th Grade

Felicia Edge ‘84 and Claudia Kauachi

10th Grade

Liz Bernus ‘85

12th Grade

Beth Conner ‘82, Wichis Diez ‘88 and Ceci de la Garza

9th Grade

11th Grade

Judge Janet Leal and Kari Greer Gloria Salazar, Lisa Esteve and Lorna Varela

These parents met on a monthly basis to plan and organize how they could support SJA. They consulted with school administrators who helped guide them in their supportive efforts to the school.

A majority of the services that they provided were hospitality in nature. They provided refreshments for all SJA social affairs such as College Fair, Honor Society Induction, Art Show, Marist Heritage Award Reception, Grandparents’ Day and much more. During Catholic Schools Week in January, they provided something special each day for either the students, faculty or both. They provided special luncheons for Teacher Appreciation Day and a special gift for staff on Administrative Professionals Day. This group of parents made a huge impact at SJA during the school year.

Everything that went into these events was donated by the parents of SJA. The group realized that in order to be sustaining, money needed to be raised. Therefore the first weekend of December, PAWS hosted its inaugural “Tis the Season Holiday Market Days” where you can do your Christmas shopping while helping a good cause. It was very successful for the group!

As the year went on, the group wanted to do 7something more substantial for the school. As they looked around to see where they could help they noticed the Teachers’ Lounge was in great disarray. The floor was missing tile, the counters were cracked, the walls needed a fresh coat of paint and the restrooms needed some attention. The group set out to raise extra funds for this project by hosting a Girls Night Out party and raised almost $5,000. With funds raised from these two events the group began their renovation project during the summer and surprised the teachers upon their return to school in August. The teachers were quite surprised when they walked into their lounge and saw a bright, cheerful, clean lounge with new furniture, art work and a whole new look. It was much appreciated by all.

The group will now expand their membership to all parents in the 2017-2018 school year.

The SJA Athletic Booster Club

G

The Saint Joseph Academy Athletic Booster Club was led for the second year in a row by President, Liliana de la Garza and her executive committee: Vice President – Sarah Figueroa; Treasurer – Carole Montemayor; Secretary – Karla Garza and Parliamentarian – Dino Esparza ‘89. Along with its general membership, this group of dedicated, conscientious parents work throughout the year, raising much needed revenue to support the athletic programs at SJA and they provide support and spirit to all SJA teams.

In early August, Karla Garza, Program Book Chairperson, formed her committee and began the arduous work of soliciting ads from local businesses and SJA parents to create the SJA Athletic Program Book. In early November, President Liliana de la Garza, Chairperson of the Club’s largest fundraiser, Taste of the Town, led her team of Booster parents to host one of the most successful events to date. In the spring, the Booster Club held their 3rd annual Spring Fest under the direction of Chairperson, Karla Garza. This year, a new component was added to the festivities with a basketball tournament that brought teams from all over the city to compete. Throughout the year, the Boosters ran concessions at all home games which was chaired by Yolanda and Carlos Davila and Sarah Figueroa.

All this hard work paid off for the Booster Club as they raised over $100,000 for the 2016/2017 school year to benefit the athletic programs! The money raised went to help with the general operating athletic budget, provided funds to remodel the weight room, polish and repair the Memorial Gymnasium floor and provide money to help fund a full time athletic trainer. These are all projects that would not have been possible without the help from the incredibly dedicated SJA Athletic Booster Club.

We would like to send a special thank you to all those that support these events.

Marist National Day of Service

In recognition of the 200th anniversary of the Marist Brothers religious order, Saint Joseph Academy students participated in the Marist Day of Service as they fanned out across the city of Brownsville and Cameron County participating in service activities at 19 locations. These activities comprised of cleaning up at the city’s hike and bike trail, painting and cleaning at Camp Bayview, caring for pets at the animal shelter, playing “Chalupa” with the elderly at a nursing home, preparing care packages for the homeless at Tip of Texas Family Outreach, beach clean-up at South Padre Island, making blankets for children in the hospital and much more. Religion teacher, Mary Beth Martin, explains that these service projects are a way for students to “celebrate and honor the love of service, especially for the least favored. Saint Marcellin Champagnat, founder of the Marist Brothers, wanted to serve the less fortunate.”

In addition to the local service projects, the students were involved in voting on how $200,000 of money donated by the Marist Brothers was to be disbursed to three international projects; Displaced and Vulnerable Children - a project aimed at areas recovering from conflict in Guatemala and education for refugees and vulnerable children in the Congo; Unreached and Underserved Poor Children – project aimed at populations in Bangladesh and Haiti who have never been to school; and Refugee and Migrant Children – project aimed at giving stability to the children by providing basic necessities, and education in Lebanon, Aleppo and Syria.
