Dear Saint Joseph Academy Community, Saint Joseph Academy is widely a n d p ro u d l y k n o w n fo r our reputation in forming exceptionally strong leaders with the academic tools to s u c c e e d i n c o l l e g e - l e ve l studies. Because we believe in developing well-rounded citizens and preparing them for success in college and fulfillment in life, we offer a robust curriculum that includes an emphasis on the Marist charism, collegepreparatory academics, and athletics.

Nelson Mandela once wisely said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” And through our rich, rigorous academic curriculum (delivered expertly by some of the finest faculty in our area) we can say with great conviction that at Saint Joseph Academy we are cultivating the next generation of leaders and world-changers.

While our facilities, technology, and resources have always been exceptional and a blessing, it has always been the people who are behind our tradition of excellence and meaningful, lifelong sense of community.

I invite you to read this issue of The Pioneer in which we highlight our exceptional students, alumni, and how our Marist charism of St. Marcellin Champagnat is at the heart of everything we do. We acknowledge that this would not be possible without the unyielding dedication of our parents, grandparents, alumni parents, friends, alumni, community partners and students. Saint Joseph Academy is your school. Thank you for your support in leading us to this exciting time in the school’s history as we work to mold SAINTS and SCHOLARS. We look forward to your continued partnership in the years ahead. Ad Astra Per Aspera,

Our mission of being a college preparatory school that forms "young men and women who will succeed in university studies, who know and love Jesus, and who actively participate in the worship and mission of the school" is instrumental in the formation of future doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, teachers, engineers, and such. Your support is helping us fulfill that mission.

As an alumna, parent of three graduates, teacher, and now principal, I firmly believe in all that Saint Joseph Academy represents. Our academic and extracurricular offerings in a faith-filled environment separates us from the rest. SJA Alumni Association Saint Joseph Academy launched, its official SJA Alumni Association in the fall of 2018. A steering committee of alumni met during the summer months to strategize what the objective of an association would be and how it would be managed. This steering committee established the SJA Alumni Association Council to include Officers and Class Decade Representatives. The following is what the Council has determined as the purpose of the SJA Alumni Association.

• • •

Keep alumni informed of the activities and programs of Saint Joseph Academy Promote a strong sense of community among those who have graduated from Saint Joseph Academy Further increase the relationship between the alumni and the current student community Provide the members with social and professional opportunities Promote and support the interests of Saint Joseph Academy Contribute to the ongoing spiritual growth of the alumni

In this inaugural year, the SJA Alumni Association had a full calendar of events both locally and statewide consisting of alumni mixers and special events.

To kick off the year, the SJA Alumni Association hosted the Alumni Homecoming Tailgate on October 26. The graduating classes of 1978, 1988, 1993, 1998, and 2008 celebrated their respective reunions, along with many other alumni joining in on the homecoming festivities. On December 12, the SJA Alumni Association, in partnership with SJA’s Call to Ministry group, hosted the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe prayer service and Tamalada, where we came together as a community for faith, fellowship and food. On December 23, the SJA Alumni Association hosted an Alumni Basketball Tournament where alumni of all ages came out to compete on the court. On February 21, the SJA Alumni Association hosted a mixer at Las Ramblas in downtown Brownsville owned in part by alumnus, Michael Limas ’01. On March 9, a gathering was held in Dallas at Las Almas Rotas. On May 15, we traveled to Houston for a gathering at The Kirby Ice House. We rounded out the year with a trip to San Antonio where the SJA Vice President of Academy Advancement had the privilege of joining the Class of 1964 as they celebrated their 55th class reunion from St. Joe!

The SJA Alumni Association is very proud to announce the implementation of the SJA Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. This year, three SJA alumni families received a $500.00 scholarship for their child enrolled at Saint Joseph Academy. These scholarships are made possible with the proceeds of membership dues.

Alumna Highlight: Kiki McGehee

Kiki McGehee’s (SJA Class of 2000) positive and outgoing demeanor is infectious even at a distance that spans over 1600 miles. It’s this demeanor that has helped the female entrepreneur launch a successful clean-eating meal delivery business in the Los Angeles, California area.

The South Padre Island native grew up as a selfdescribed overweight child, fueled by processed foods readily available in South Texas. After a rude awakening by the family’s pediatrician, McGehee learned it was time to make a lifestyle change. As an adult, she acknowledged that her love of food needed to merge with the “eat to live” outlook that her spouse believed in. McGehee now had two driving forces at the forefront of her mind – a passion for food and a lack of convenient, healthy and delicious menu items to choose from for her daily lifestyle. “I realized that food is medicine and that became really important to me,” says McGehee. “My husband is a personal trainer, so I started cooking for some of his clients and they loved it. It was very successful because I focused on clean, whole foods and reducing inflammatory triggers. I also kept making the foods that I loved but healthier.” Shortly after that, McGehee teamed up with a chef and they started cooking together.

McGehee’s passion project soon grew out of her home and into a larger commercial kitchen. While navigating the ebbs and flows of being a business owner, McGehee admits there were definite bumps in the road. “Being a female entrepreneur and being a small business owner – there are few resources when it comes to things like funding and really trying to grow your business…so it’s really been me pushing uphill by myself.”

With challenges on the road to success, McGehee relied on her spouse’s support and her circle of friends. Many of which included friendships formed as a student at Saint Joseph Academy. “That sense of support and the sense of the faith that St. Joe builds…you don’t think about it while you’re a student but that is what’s gotten me through pushing into my dreams,” says McGehee. As a busy adult, she finds herself going back to the foundation that was rooted in faith which has allowed her to propel herself into pursuing her dreams.

She now finds value in the school that helped develop her character that has become invaluable to her success. “I may not have been the smartest person when I went off to Stanford (University), but I was for sure the most confident and driven,” she says and adds that Coach Meme Garza was an inspiration to her. “He’s an icon and we were just really blessed to have him for those years. He instilled that sense of discipline in me that really trailed through into my life as an adult. He helped me realize that I can balance it all.”

8

8

As she looks to grow her seven-year-old business even larger, she advises those that want to pursue their dreams to really start writing ideas down. “Every business should always start with a plan. If you don’t put it down on paper that business will not come to life,” says McGehee. “My business plan was very simple but it’s something that I still go back to these days because those ideas are coming from a place of passion and that’s when you’re going to have the most drive to creativity. Once you start getting into the nitty gritty of the business, that’s when you start to lose that creative passion that drove you to start it in the first place.”

Alumna Highlight: Alexandra (González) Rainey

In May of 2011, a bright young alumna of Saint Joseph Academy, Alexandra (González) Rainey ’11 was destined for greatness as she walked across the stage to receive her high school diploma. The following August, she launched the next chapter of her life as she began her studies at Texas A&M University in College Station.

One of the most influential activities Alexandra participated in was the Texas A&M Traditions Council, which is a committee of students on the Executive Branch of the Student Government Association of Texas A&M. This group is dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditions of the Aggies through outreach and education. During her senior year, she was selected to lead the group as their President. Through this organization, she was able to volunteer at “The Big Event,” which is the largest one-day, student-run community service project in the nation. Thousands of students come together this day to say “thank you” to the residents of Bryan/College Station by completing service projects such as yard work, window washing, and painting for residents of the community. Alexandra said, “This was just a small example of the experiences we have at Texas A&M, which ties back to what was instilled in me while at St. Joe: my faith, values, community, and service were all learned at SJA”.

This volunteer work lead Alexandra to her first part-time job at The Association of Former Students, which is Texas A&M University’s alumni association, when she was a sophomore in college. She was hired as the Executive Student Assistant to the President and CEO of The Association.

Alexandra rose through her four years of undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University and graduated in December 2015 with a degree in Agricultural Economics and was selected as the Commencement Speaker for her graduation ceremony. It was there that she decided to pursue a career working in philanthropy and alumni relations.

During her final semester of college, Alexandra chose to accept a full-time role as Development Specialist at The Association of Former Students. This role led Alexandra to pursue her master’s degree at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M and graduated in May 2018 with a degree in Public Affairs (MPSA). After more than six years as a student worker and full-time employee at The Association, in July 2019, Alexandra was offered a new opportunity as the Director of Development for the Bush School of Government and Public Service at the Texas A&M Foundation, where she continues her philanthropic work raising large sums of money for the Foundation, as part of Texas A&M’s $4 billion Lead by Example capital campaign.

In her personal life, Alexandra married her college sweetheart, Jayton Rainey of San Angelo, Texas, in December 2018. Alexandra has been involved with St. Mary’s Catholic Church all through her years in College Station. Alexandra says she is who she is today because of the common thread between Saint Joseph Academy and Texas A &M University. “Both schools instilled core values, faith formation, tradition, and the sense of community that helped form the young woman I am today. I feel truly blessed to have grown up a Bloodhound and Fightin’ Texas Aggie. I can’t wait to see what all the Lord has in store.”

Academics

The Heart of Who We Are

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of a true education.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

At Saint Joseph Academy we are known for our exceptional facilities, unique opportunities, faith formation, and athletics. However, academics (coupled with our remarkable faculty) is the heart of who we are as an educational institution. In this year’s Pioneer you will learn more about our curriculum and how our students are capitalizing on what they learn to become successful in college and life.

A superior academic experience doesn’t just happen – it takes time, strategy and a lot of communication. At Saint Joseph Academy, our faculty and administration work hard to align curriculum, creating a natural flow of lessons, instruction, and assessments across all disciplines. The strong vertical and horizontal alignment ensure that key concepts and skills are reinforced, preparing students for challenging, higher-level studies beyond our school.

STUDENTS

It all starts with our students…they’re at the center of all we do. Students here are known, nurtured and encouraged to create an academic journey that is their own. In fact, our Middle Division students earn numerous high school credits during their time in 7th & 8th grade. At the same time, Upper Division students have the opportunity to pursue college credits through our extensive AP and Dual Enrollment Courses starting as early as 9th grade.

PRINCIPAL

Saint Joseph Academy’s principal, Mrs. Melissa Valadez ’90, partners with school administration and the Board of Directors to ensure that our school’s mission is at the forefront of everything we do. As the school’s academic leader, Melissa ultimately oversees our academic programs, faculty, and staff. This allows her to take a strategic look at the needs of our school as she hires “best in their class” faculty who are at the same time, mission-centered.

FACULTY

With a common goal in mind, faculty in the various disciplines are empowered to adapt their curriculum, or even develop a new one, collaborating with department heads and the school principal. This ultimately strengthens learning for students of all ages. Having a smaller student body gives us the ability to be agile in our curriculum development—if a faculty member sees a new opportunity to enrich his or her classroom instruction (like a guest speaker, a field trip, or cross-curricular activity), he or she is able to quickly incorporate it, often within weeks.

ACADEMIC COMMUNITY

The Saint Joseph Academy Academic Committee is made up of teachers, administrators, board members, and students to support meaningful learning across grade levels. Led by the principal and a board member, the committee’s work is student-centered and dedicated to ensuring the successful progress of Saint Joseph Academy students. The council meets every other month during the school year, working together to constantly improve the curriculum, and most recently to work on the development of “Signature Academic Programs” that will be rolled out over the next few academic years. The SJA team never loses sight of its focus on student learning, or the common mission we all share to prepare students for success in college and in life. 11

Community Prayer Breakfast Across the nation, alumni of Saint Joseph Academy are serving their communities by doing God’s work of serving those in need and exemplifying leadership. Each year, Saint Joseph Academy chooses to recognize a few of the outstanding alumni that are serving their community and the community of Brownsville at the annual SJA Community Prayer Breakfast.

The Presidential Distinguished Alumnus award went to Margaret Hasse Cowen ’78. Mrs. Cowen graduated from Pan American University (now University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley) with a BBA in accounting. She is a CPA and practiced public accounting specializing in taxation and currently manages family assets. She resides in San Antonio and Brownsville. Margaret has always had a passion for children and education. She was a BISD Board of Trustee member, a member of the Saint Joseph Academy Board of Directors and was appointed to the Texas Council on Autism & Pervasive Developmental Delay, where she served for 10 years. In service to her communities, she volunteered with Family Outreach, Brownsville Junior Service League, San Margaret Hasse Cowen '78 Antonio Junior Forum, and Fiesta Especiales (Fiesta Event for individuals with special needs and their families.) Margaret currently volunteers with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) representing children who have been removed from their homes due to child abuse and neglect. Margaret has three children, John ’98, Benjamin, and Megan Cowen Stinson. Margaret enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and traveling with family and friends. Inspired by the values instilled in her as a student at SJA, Margaret continues to actively seek out opportunities to serve St. Joe and her communities.

The Presidential Distinguished Community Leader award went to Dr. Elsa Cárdenas - Hagan. Dr. Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan is a Bilingual Speech Language Pathologist, Certified Academic Language Therapist, Certified Dyslexia Therapist and Qualified Instructor. She is the President of Valley Speech Language and Learning Center in Brownsville, Texas which was established in 1993. She is the recipient of the Luke Waites Service Award by the Academic Language Therapy Association, the Champion Elsa Cardeñas Hagan of Dyslexia Award by the Texas Education Agency, the Outstanding Alumni Award of the University of HoustonCollege of Education and the Spirit Award on behalf of Saint Mary’s School for the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville. Elsa has served two terms as a Saint Joseph Academy school board member and is the current Chairperson for the Academic Committee. She co-founded Brownsville READS! and continues to be dedicated to improving evidencebased literacy instruction for ALL students especially those with learning disabilities. Her efforts will continue, until one day everyone can read and achieve their dreams.

Gracing the attendees of the Community Prayer Breakfast was our Keynote Speaker, Mr. Gaston Sosa, ‘88. Mr. Sosa′s association with Saint Joseph Academy starts when he was accepted as a sophomore in 1985. Coming from Colegio Don Bosco in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Gaston finds at St. Joe a competitive yet nurturing atmosphere that played an important part in his future achievements.

After St. Joe, Gaston was accepted at St. Mary′s University in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1992 with a double major in Political Science and Economics. After spending a year in the Texas A&M Ph.D. program in Economics and being a recipient of the National Merit Hispanic Scholar award, Gaston Sosa '88 he transferred in the fall of 1993 to the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences to continue his graduate studies. Gaston received a master’s degree in Public and Private Management from the Yale School of Management and a master’s degree in international and development economics from the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in December 1995. Gaston’s professional life started at Salomon Brothers in New York as an Associate in the Global Power Group in 1996. During his assignment, he advised Mexico’s National Utility CFE in the structuring, contract terms and financing conditions of the 440MW Merida III combined cycle power plant. Gaston was directly involved in the advisory that Salomon Smith Barney performed for BBVA in the acquisition of Grupo Financiero Bancomer and later in the Citigroup $12 billion acquisition of Banamex. He executed the $18 billion spin off of America Movil from Telmex. He retired from Citigroup as a Managing Director and Group head in 2008 at age 38. In 2008, he founded Aktiva Capital. From this vehicle, Gaston has invested in a series of businesses in diverse industries such as healthcare, finance, real estate, lodging, food and beverage, e-learning, agriculture, logistics and security services. Gaston sits on the Board of Trustees of St. Mary’s University. He is also a board member of the Yale School of Management and was a board member of the University of Texas-RGV Business School. Saint Joseph Academy thanks our keynote speaker and awardees for the work they do for their communities and their commitment to St. Joe. 13

SJA Missions Saint Joseph Academy’s Faith Formation program is a major component of the school. Rooted in the Marist tradition, Saint Joseph Academy integrates Gospel values into an educational curriculum so that students can know and love Jesus Christ. These lessons are oftentimes found outside of the classroom when students actively participate in liturgies, retreats, mission trips, and community outreach programs. As servant leaders (a mark of a Marist school), the community that makes up the school has a commitment to serving the least favored in society. With students busier than ever, Saint Joseph Academy continues to work through ministries with the understanding that it has an obligation to its community to continue the Gospel call to serve one another.

Always on the lookout for new opportunities for students to participate in, Campus Minister Tony Cantu ’75 heard of a project that the Marist Brothers had been collaborating on that was focused on immigration and refugees. When Mr. Cantu and Religion Department Chair, Ms. Mary Beth Martin learned of this project, they knew they had to take part in it. “I really wanted these students to have a bigger awareness of the immigration situation. We may be close to the issue, but our situation is very different than what you find over there,” says Cantu.

With no mindset preparedness, Mr. Cantu and Ms. Martin embarked on the 15-hour trip to El Paso, Texas with six students and one young alumnus (the trip is open to Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors and SJA graduates). Although Mr. Cantu and Ms. Martin knew each of the students that were on the trip well enough, both were surprised at how quickly the students adapted and took ownership of the situation. Students had a laundry list of duties that needed to be taken care of with little to no direction. “I loved seeing their initiative and their problem-solving skills. They were ready to do intake and the first family that they encountered spoke Portuguese, but our students quickly figured out how to use Google translate, how to work around common words, how to make connections with people,” said Martin. For days, students gathered at the shelter for migrant families and readily assembled lunch bags, accompanied refugees to airports and bus stations, distributed clothing and medical supplies and discussed in-depth travel arrangements with refugees and their sponsors. At the end of the day, with no complaints, students cleaned and organized the shelter. “That willingness to really be a servant and to wash other’s feet and to do whatever was needed was extremely impressive. They did everything not only with a willing spirit but with a lot of love.”

The trip left students not only with a better understanding of immigration issues but also left them filled with gratitude. “The trip helped me understand that I have everything I need to be happy for the life that God has given me,” says 11th grade student, Eduardo Esquivel. “It showed me that I should never take anything for granted and that I should appreciate everything. Knowing that my faith and my school teach me this everyday makes me strive to become a person of service.” 14

Montagne Scholars Since 2005, Saint Joseph Academy and Guadalupe Regional Middle School (GRMS) have partnered to provide graduates from GRMS the opportunity to continue their Catholic education at the high school level through the Montagne Scholars Program. GRMS is an all-scholarship Catholic school serving students from economically disadvantaged families that desire a Catholic education, but cannot afford the tuition that normally goes with one. The Marist Brothers are also one of GRMS’s sponsoring congregations.

The Montagne Scholars Program is named after Jean-Baptiste Montagne, the young French boy Marcellin Champagnat encountered where he felt a personal call by God to form the religious community of Brothers that would bring the message of Jesus' love to marginalized young people.

Students accepted into the Montagne Scholars program are highly motivated students that are committed to academic success, and whose families demonstrate a significant financial need. Each year, St. Joe enrolls between 15-20 GRMS graduates and to date, close to 100 GRMS alumni have graduated from St. Joe. Montagne Scholars have made significant contributions to the SJA community in and out of the classroom and have received accolades like the SJA Salutatorian, President’s Medal, Marist Heritage Award, and Athlete of the Year, to name a few.

GRMS’s Graduate Support Program reported to SJA that its graduates that have gone on to attend St. Joe as Montagne Scholars score higher on the SAT’s, get into more competitive colleges and universities, are more engaged alumni, and tend to graduate college in four years at a higher rate, as compared to GRMS graduates who attend other high-schools. The success of Montagne Scholars can largely be attributed to the high-performing environment and culture Saint Joseph Academy provides, the individualized academic and social support, and the continued faith-formation they receive as St. Joe students.

Highlighting the 2018-2019 school year for the Montagne Scholars Program were four Scholars earning the “Legion of Honor” medal at the Academic Awards assembly in May and 12th grade Montagne Scholar, Ashlley Castillo, who earned a four-year full-scholarship to the University of Notre Dame.

Ashlley Castillo ‘19

Over the years, Montagne Scholars have gone on to attend schools like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Columbia University, University of Notre Dame, Texas A&M, University of Texas at Austin, and St. Mary’s University-San Antonio, to name a few. Funding for the Montagne Scholars Program comes from foundation grants, the Saint Joseph Academy Endowment, and individual donations.

Student Spotlight: Daniel Wolfe ‘20 With eyes that light up when he smiles and a willingness to always lend a helping hand, Senior Daniel Wolfe is the type of student that is not easily influenced by others and knows what he wants. At the end of his Junior year, Wolfe knew that he wanted to study law but he was still intrigued by musings into the world of business that he grew up around. Although one could think that his mother, a guidance counselor at Saint Joseph Academy, might have influenced Wolfe to consider different options by encouraging him to attend a variety of summer experiences, Wolfe went about it on his own. Narrowing his options down to four camps, Wolfe set out on a summer full of eye-opening adventures.

Topping off the list of excursions was the American Legion Texas Boys State. Texas Boys State is an educational program in which young men from across the State of Texas are nominated to participate in government instruction. The program allows high school boys to become a part of the operation of their local, county, and state government. Students in attendance are elected to various offices and are exposed to the rights, privileges, duties and responsibilities of being a citizen of the Unites States. Held on the University of Texas campus in Austin, Wolfe attended the program not because politics was in his future, but because he wanted to experience something new. The program left him with the opportunity to meet local and state politicians and allowed him to forge relationships with program counselors that left him and his new found groups of friends with plenty of insightful advice.

After dipping his toes into the land of politics and government, Wolfe continued at the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business “Discover Yourself in Accounting Majors and Careers” summer program where his decision to study business was solidified. Participating in the program widened Wolfe’s perception into the field of accounting. At the end of the program, Wolfe and his fellow cohorts were tasked with hosting a presentation about an investment opportunity between two companies complete with income statements and cash flow sheets. Although it was Wolfe’s first foray into the field of accounting, he quickly fell in love with the industry. “I like the mindset of dealing with financials,” says Wolfe. “It gives you this sense of pride that you’re being entrusted with this opportunity.” Another opportunity awaited Wolfe at Texas A&M’s Mays School of Business Transformational Leadership Academy. The challenge for his group was to come up with a product and market it to investors. Wolfe was able to apply the skills he had learned at McCombs and help his group

secure first place in the competition. With two business opportunities already under his belt, Wolfe was sure that law school might no longer be an option but was pleasantly surprised to learn that his new love of accounting and business could still be applied to the field of law when he visited the Securities and Exchange Commission as part of his participation in the Hispanic National Bar Foundation – Future Latino Leaders Law Institute in Washington, D.C. Wolfe now knows that his future includes attending business school after high school graduation with law school immediately after college. After a whirlwind summer, Wolfe is focused and ready to make his next move. Growing up in a family of successful business men, he credits his dad as the person that inspires him, to push him to be better. “My dad has been a major influence in my life. He’s my biggest role model. I make every attempt in life to pretty much be who he is,” says Wolfe.

With aspirations that go far and wide, with confidence to match, underclassmen may look at Wolfe as the type of student that never had to deal with insecurities but Wolfe is quick to add that his outlook as a Freshman has changed dramatically over the years. “I’ve been in that situation where I didn’t have many friends and it’s sad but it was fleeting. I think people are afraid to show others what they’re really like but you see the flaws in yourself more than anybody else does,” says Wolfe. “You have to understand that your flaws make up who you are and they really aren’t as bad as you make them out to be. But remember, you really need to put yourself out there because rejection is a part of life but effort goes a long way”. 17

Teacher Spotlight: Tony Cantu

Tony Cantu has been around enough to see the religious component of Saint Joseph Academy evolve into a full-fledged Campus Ministry program complete with Called to Ministry Classes, mission trips, and retreats. Although his intentions years ago were never meant to be a Campus Minister, Cantu is now synonymous with the word. In the verb tense, to minister simply means to attend to the needs of someone, and Cantu has been tending to the needs of students since the 80’s.

A 1975 graduate of St. Joe, Cantu has had the opportunity to minister to students from across the decades, many of whom are children of those he taught years before. With a knack for connecting with many, Cantu always keeps it real with his quick wit and sarcasm. “I don’t play games. But my students get it. They know that I can be sarcastic but at the same time, I’m praising them in the next moment,” says Cantu. “I’ve learned to read people. I know that I can be sarcastic with some people and it’s fine but others I have to treat them differently”.

While discerning the priesthood as a student at St. Thomas University in Houston, Cantu realized that his gifts would be best utilized in another capacity after a five-day silent retreat in Louisiana. It was during a job with a local school district that he began ministering to the poor. In the 80s, Cantu was recruited to revamp the retreat program at the Academy.

After teaching religion courses in the 90’s at St. Joe, the ingredient that fueled his fire was reignited when a parent and another faculty member organized a Missions group. Cantu was invited to participate and eventually he began getting involved in the week-long service project. “I love all aspects of participating in mission trips, but I especially love that I get to show students the face of God during these trips,” says Cantu.

Although his love for ministry is evident, still, the position comes with its challenges. “You never know what affect you have on people. When you don’t always see the fruits of your labor you wonder, ‘Why am I doing this?’,” says Cantu. “Sometimes you never see it and then sometimes you do. And when you do, it’s worth it.”

18

While the fruits of Cantu’s labor may not always be clearly evident, his perseverance in ministry keep students coming back to visit him, year after year and he has even officiated some of their weddings. “Mr. Cantu just has a way with our students and a lot of that has to do with the way his class Called to Ministry lends itself to them,” says SJA principal, Melissa Valadez ’90. “The contents of that course, his manner of teaching, his involvement with students straight across the board - everybody knows who Mr. Cantu is, and that’s a big blessing to our community.”

Bloodhound Ambassadors Students that reached their Class Gift Goal

Service to others is something that is engrained in students at Saint Joseph Academy from the moment they step foot on the SJA campus. By the time most students graduate from St. Joe, giving back to those that are less fortunate has become second nature. In 2017, St. Joe decided to elevate the student body’s outlook on giving back by adding philanthropy education into the mix. Philanthropy, for all intents and purposes, is service to others in the form of charitable giving, and to deliver that message, the Bloodhound Ambassadors were formed.

Bloodhound Ambassadors are the student philanthropic arm of the Saint Joseph Academy Office of Academy Advancement and Alumni Affairs. The group is made up of students from all grade levels who are chosen through an application and interview process. The goals of this group are raising money to benefit their school, teaching their peers about the importance of philanthropy and staying involved with St. Joe after graduation.

Throughout the year, Ambassadors were taught the different ways in which organizations raise money – private/individual contributions, foundation support (grants), and special events. Ambassadors were then tasked with delivering the message to their peers. To do this, the organization launched the Class Gift Program where each current student at SJA was encouraged to make a gift to the SJA Fund in honor of their graduating year. Ambassadors hosted an I Love SJA week and kicked it off with an all-school presentation where the student body learned why the SJA Fund exists and how participating in the Class Gift Program will help the longevity of the school. That same evening, the Ambassadors hosted a Spaghetti Dinner and raised close to $3,000. Students were encouraged to participate in special activities presented by the Ambassadors throughout I Love SJA week that would help each student reach their Class Gift goal, and the class with the most funds raised was rewarded with a pizza party. The week ended with a special I Love SJA reception on the Feast of Saint Joseph where alumni and supporters of the school gathered in the Administration Building for an evening among friends that share the same admiration for Saint Joseph Academy.

“We faced a lot of setbacks and some negativity, but it made us reconvene and come up with a different plan to help us reach our goal for the next school year, and we have a lot of exciting ways to do this,” said 2019-2020 President Gigi Gutierrez. “Ambassadors truly love the school and we want to teach our classmates that when you love something, you should take care of it. And that starts with our home – St. Joe.”

Athletic Booster Club Thanks to the SJA Athletic Booster Club, “Take me out to the Ballgame” can be sung loud and proud from the SJA Baseball field as the Bloodhounds play ball on their newly renovated baseball field. Also, this year, the Athletic Booster Club renovated the SJA tennis courts with the help of their sponsor, the Del Pozo families. These two projects have made a significant impact for St. Joe athletics.

The SJA Athletic Booster Club is comprised of dedicated, sports loving, parents who work tirelessly all year on various projects to benefit the athletic programs. They raise funds by selling ads for the Athletic Program Book, selling concessions at all home sporting events, planning and executing the Taste of the Town event, and their annual basketball tournament and BBQ plate dinner. With the proceeds from these activities and events, the Athletic Booster Club helps provide vital financial support to sustain and strengthen the various SJA athletic programs. The Booster Club has made a concerted effort to support each sport with special needs, such as equipment, new technology, etc. The Athletic Booster Club would like to thank all those who help support SJA athletics, especially Tipton Motors who each year donates all the food for the BBQ plate dinner fundraiser.

Our heartfelt thanks to the Executive Board and the members of the Athletic Booster Club for providing the athletic teams with such amazing support. We thank Presidents Luis ’86 and Ceci De La Garza, Vice President, Karla Garza; Secretary, Julie Gonzalez ‘93; Treasurer, Carole Montemayor; Past President, Dino Esparza ‘89; and Team Representatives, Vicky Balderas, Yolanda and Carlos Davila, Monica Douglas, Julie Gonzalez ‘93, Liz Hainley, Marcela Lawler ‘89, Janet Leal Mercedes Moncada, Maryanna Ordóñez, Shannon Rivas, and Fabiola Rodriguez

Taste of The Town As the stars shined above and lights twinkled in the trees under the soft moonlight, the community of friends and family of Saint Joseph Academy came together for an evening filled with delectable food from local restaurants around the Rio Grande Valley, full bodied wines to sample from various regions of the world, and camaraderie with one another.

The annual Taste of the Town is hosted by the SJA Athletic Booster Club as their primary fundraiser to support their yearly initiatives. This year, the Athletic Booster Club thanks the Event Sponsor, Dr. Gregory and Nadine Smith for their contribution in supporting Taste of the Town.

Each year, the Athletic Booster Club honors a special person who gives of their time, love and support for athletics at St. Joe. This year, the Athletic Booster Club was proud to give tribute to Jeff Gowen with the Ring of Honor award. Mr. Gowen has been a tremendous asset to the school serving in many capacities such as Student Council moderator, golf coach, and longtime swim coach, leading the boys team to a 2nd place finish in TAPPS. Style Show As the lights dimmed and the curtains opened, vibrations were felt throughout the auditorium as the students of Saint Joseph Academy took to the stage with The Sounds of Motown for the 63rd annual Style Show.

As is the long-standing tradition at St. Joe, the Senior Class of 2019 dazzled the audience as they modeled today’s latest fashion from local retailers such as Layers the Boutique, The Tux Shop, The Boot Jack and Dillard’s and danced to the beat of Motown legends such as Marvin Gaye, The Jackson Five and The Chiffon’s.

A new tradition at the SJA Style Show incorporated grade level dances that had the audience bobbing in their seats when the Middle Division students danced to Rocking Robin, and the Freshmen moved to Rock the Boat. Special appearances by Diana Ross and The Supremes along with The Temptations (aka members of the Sophomore and Junior classes) graced the stage singing legendary songs by these popular artists.

The audience was blown away by the finale as the Class of 2019 closed the show dancing throughout the auditorium to Dancing in the Streets by Motown artist’s, Martha and the Vandellas. As the house lights came up at the end of the show, we gave thanks to the choreographers who gave countless hours of their time to the students as they choreographed the stunning routines. We thanked the students for their participation, as they rehearsed two and three times a week late into the night and on weekends for five straight weeks. We thanked the parents and families for their attendance and support of the event. Finally, we thanked the volunteers, especially the general Chairpersons, Karla Garza and Elizabeth Holzman and the Production Chair, Ofelia Montemayor for the hundreds of hours they put into the show ensuring its success. The SJA Style Show is the highest grossing event for the school each year.
