In April 2022, Saint Joseph Academy received a historic and transformative $1M gift from SJA alumnus, Fernando De Leon ’97, to establish the endowed “De Leon Scholars Program” and the “De Leon Excellence in Education Award”

This transformative gift the largest single gift in SJA’s 157-year history will have an indelible impact on students and teachers for the foreseeable future “Fernando feels a strong personal responsibility to give back to the school that contributed to the man he has become and the success he has achieved,” said SJA President, Michael Motyl “ This gift is an investment in the formation of generations of young men and women. We are profoundly grateful for Fernando and his family ’s commitment to supporting our students and educators. Both the De Leon Scholars Program and the De Leon Excellence in Education Award will continue to deepen our approach to relational teaching and learning, enhancing both the philosophical and educational aspects of the Marist, Catholic education that St Joseph Academy provides ”

The purpose and goal of the De Leon Scholars Program is to recognize and reward students in the 9th – 12th grade who contribute to and make a difference at Saint Joseph Academy, in their home, community at large, and who are likely to continue to do so in the future In addition to a tuition-assistance award from Saint Joseph Academy, De Leon Scholars will enjoy numerous other benefits that will extend beyond their years at SJA from backpack to briefcase including mentoring and internships opportunities as they navigate to and through college This year ’s recipients are 11th graders Andrea Jasso ‘23, Cynthia Gonzales ‘23 and Julio Cesar Silguero ‘24.

Similarly, the De Leon Excellence in Education Award aims to recognize and acknowledge those SJA educators that are making significant and noteworthy contributions to the school community. They are the difference makers, the role models, and significantly contribute to the academic success of Saint Joseph Academy students.

“SJA supported a lot of us with tuition assistance and changed our life’s trajectory. The dual cultures that we learned to navigate at SJA are the perfect background for developing versatile, conscientious, and talented young men and women that can make a global impact. We’re delighted to support one of the most important institutions in Brownsville,” said Fernando De Leon.

Signature Programs

experienCeS beyonD the ClaSSroom

In the Spring of 2022, Saint Joseph Academy introduced a new and exciting program aimed at 9th graders The Signature Programs is an opportunity for students to engage with leaders in designated fields and participate in seminars and community activities which will enhance their SJA experience.

In addition, the program combines academics with exposure to careers ranging from engineering and biotech to performing arts and public service. The goal of these programs is to give high school students an early opportunity to explore talents and gain experience that will set them on a path to fulfilling college majors and careers

The three pathways of The Signature Programs to choose from include:

• Arts and Humanities

• Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)

• International Leadership

Depending on the pathway a student chooses, they will be required to take core subjects, program-related seminars, conduct research, hold active memberships in program-related organizations, and take part in professional shadowing and mentor programs Each year a new cohort will be added, eventually serving students in the 9-12th grades.

SJA

The Signature Programs currently consist of 44 freshmen. So far, students have met with several alumni, including Gilbert Hernandez '14, Daniella Lopez-Valdez ‘09 and Maricris Castillo '17, where they learned about Engineering, local leadership in Brownsville, and Wildlife and Fisheries. Members of the program will continue to meet once a month to learn more about fields like International Leadership, Psychology, Business, Arts, and Health. At the start of their sophomore year, they will select their track and actively participate in school organizations relevant to their track Their sophomore year will culminate with Arts/Humanities, Leadership, or STEM-based research through content writing, attending 1-2 seminars, and participating in a related content project.

Saint JoSeph aCaDemy 101 club

The 101 Club was created with the intent of arming our Athletic Department with the means needed to provide our teams with the best possible equipment, travel, uniforms or any additional items that our teams may need or want in order to be competitive The reason for the number '101' is symbolic Our school's address is 101 St. Joseph Drive. The 101 Club is meant for alumni and friends of the program to invest $101 or more back to their "home"

In 2021, we raised $43,000! Our funds were used to purchase new uniforms for middle school girls’ and boys’ basketball teams and our middle school football teams to name a few On our c a m p a i g n l a u n c h d a y , N o v e m b e r 3 0 t h : D a y o f

Giving, we rallied in the Saint Joseph Academy Administration Boardroom with all of

SJA

the head coaches calling our Bloodhound alumni and community supporters to gain support. It was a lot of fun and we enjoyed rallying around our athletes!

In 2019, the Athletic Department formed the 101 Club and asked former Bloodhounds to donate $101 or more to the SJA Athletic Department. The money that was raised that year was used to purchase stadium lights for Canales Field In 2020, the appeal was to purchase football helmets with the newest technology that have computer chips to measure a player's impact. In 2021, we expanded the 101 Club to provide unrestricted funds for ALL sports. Donors have the option for their gift to be allocated to a specific need for a specific sport at their request which assists the Athletic Department with expanding the overall athletic experience for our athletes to make the most out of their journey at St. Joseph Academy. The 101 Club funds will be allocated directly and solely to the Athletic Department

Bloodhound Alumni and community supporters are invited to join the 101 Club which will not only support our athletes, but also comes with different levels of membership with different benefits. There are options for one time, monthly, or yearly memberships to the 101 Club.

Every gift is appreciated.

Wa l K in G in th e footS te p S of St. Marcellin Champagnat

This summer, three members of the SJA family took part in one of the most meaningful and magnificent trips to be embarked upon Along with a group of more than 20 pilgrims, Principal Melissa Valadez ‘90, Director of Campus Ministry Tony Cantu ’75 and Counselor Lindsay Irwin traveled to the birthplace of the Marist Brothers Together they walked in the footsteps of St. Marcellin Champagnat, the founder of the Marist Brothers, the congregation of Brothers dedicated to education which has breathed life into Saint Joseph Academy for more than 150 years

The mission of Marist schools is to lead young people to know and love Jesus and Mary, in the belief that they all can become good Christians and good citizens. Inspired by Marcellin Champagnat, Marist educators, before all else, love their students Their Marial approach is marked by simplicity, family spirit, love of their work and presence in the midst of those whom they are called to serve.

Marist schools welcome all young people, whatever their circumstances, offering each one an education which draws faith, culture, and life into harmony.

On the first day, the group arrived in Lyon, France to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Fourviere. It was here, 206 years ago that Marcellin, then a young and newly ordained priest, along with 4 of his friends, made a pilgrimage to the Statue of the Virgin, and pledged to start a Society of Mary. Once inside the group was granted a private session around the same altar and the same statue that Marcellin visited “Saint Marcellin made a pledge with 11 other priests to found the Society of Mary. They made this pledge/promise in this Chapel. At the end of the prayer, we sang Salve Regina,” said Cantu

SJA

After that, it was off on a one-hour journey to L'Hermitage in Saint Chamond, the home that Marcellin and the first brothers built. The group stayed there for 4 days walking in the footsteps of the man whose vision is the foundation for everything we do at Saint Joseph Academy.

The group toured Champagnat ’s family home in Marlhes, the chapel where he was baptized and the spot where St Marcellin prayed for the dying boy, Jean Baptist Montagne. “He was the young boy that Champagnat instructed This experience is what led Champagnat to found the brothers It was very moving , ” said Cantu. We Marists call this the “Montagne Experience ” The only remnant left is a lone rock to signify the momentous event in Champagnat ’s life.

At the parish in La Valla, Marcellin first ser ved as a parish preist He lived here with the first brothers The group grew so large they eventually built L 'Hermitage, where they lived for many years. The group sat at the table built by Marcellin’s own hands It was around this table that the first brothers ate, studied and prayed “It became very real that we were walking his path, challenging us to pick up the torch and carry on as part of something bigger,” Cantu said

On that Sunday, the group visited and attended Liturgy at the original church in Taizé. The Liturgy was shared in multiple languages including English.

On the 5th day, the group traveled to Le Puy-en-Velay, a beautiful city built on and around a series of volcanos.

There is a rich history of devotion to the Blessed Mother in the Cathedral, and it is believed that the Salve Regina was first sung here around 1096 AD It was there, in Le Puy, with its incredible devotion to Our Lady, that the idea of starting a Society of Mary first occurred to St Marcellin Champagnat Speaking about the trip as a whole, Irwin said, “It is a reminder to us, that we are all in God’s providence and grace.”

On their last night of the pilgrimage, the group gathered in the chapel at L'Hermitage around the final resting place of St. Marcellin Champagnat for a final prayer. Together, this devoted Marist family recommitted themselves to the mission to make Jesus known and loved. “ This pilgrimage allowed us to follow in the footsteps of St. Marcellin Champagnat and brought a clearer understanding of what it means to be Marist. My heart is overflowing, and I can’t wait to see where my journey goes from here,” said Valadez.

Saint JOSEPH’S Day of GivinG

Among the many special events and traditions that currently take place throughout the school year, our annual Giving event, Saint Joseph's Day, truly allows us to put all else aside and reflect on what it truly means to be Marist. During this day we celebrate the Feast of Saint Marcelin Champagnat and ask the SJA community to help us in making a difference by contributing to the SJA Fund.

The donations given on St Joseph’s Day, made a significant impact to the SJA Fund. In part, the monies raised helped with renovation projects around campus such as u p d a t i n g c l a s s r o o m s , b e a u t i f i c a t i o n o f o u r grounds, and purchasing of new equipment for the computer lab. In addition, we were able to provide many families with tuition assistance True to our mission we want to ensure that every student receives the opportunity for a Marist education and in providing tuition assistance, we are able to achieve this goal

In giving back to the SJA community, Saint Joseph Academy is able to lay the ground work for future student achievement. Our success is due largely in part on the support from those who believe in our school community and mission

The Saint Joseph Academy family expands far and is always at its best when we rally together. Collectively, we can make a difference for not only the benefit of the school but more so for our students This was made quite evident as alumni and the SJA community came together and raised more than $80,000 on Saint Joseph’s Day!

It truly was a great event! An alumnus, opened their home as the “headquarters” for the day, allowing faculty, staff, students and alumni to gather and work together. There was an abundance of food, drinks and comradery with a shared love for SJA. you could feel the positive aura in the room and the great vibes radiating from all that had come to ensure the success of St. Joseph’s Day. The tremendous amount of school spirit was vibrant and it was comforting to know that everyone there shared the same love for their alma mater

At Saint Joseph Academy, we pride ourselves in making sure our first priority is being able to give students the tools they need to learn, grow, and become successful community leaders and St Joseph’s Day is one more way for us to continue doing that.

As they say “Make an Impact! Make a gift!”

The Saint Joseph Academy Bloodhound Ambassadors is the student philanthropic arm of the Saint Joseph Academy Office of Academy Advancement and Alumni Affairs Students from all grade levels are encouraged to apply, allowing us to showcase the quality and diversity of the student body. Students are selected through an application process and are required to submit one or more letters of recommendation. Those students who are selected to become members serve as the official student representatives of SJA Bloodhound Ambassadors have the ability to communicate their passion for Saint Joseph Academy as well as details and comprehensive knowledge of the school’s mission, history, facilities and programs. As Ambassadors, students interact with faculty, staff, donors, alumni and community/business leaders. Our Ambassadors, in partnership with the SJA Office of Advancement and Admissions, provides assistance for campus tours, special events, public speaking events and participation in other support and fundraising activities One of the goals of this group is to raise money to give back to the school and teach their peers the importance of philanthropy and its benefits Members learn the different ways non-profits solicit funds and the importance of cultivating and stewarding donor relationships.

The organization has an Executive Board, which is made up of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Historian, Treasurer, Special Events Coordinator for 12th, 11th & 10th grade and a Special Events Coordinator for grades 9th, 8th & 7th Aside from assisting , having an Executive Board allows them to voice their ideas on how we can meet the goals we have set in place. Other roles and responsibilities of the Executive Board are to administer the monthly meetings and assist the members in the committee they have selected to participate in.

SJA

The Bloodhound Ambassadors participate in various events throughout the school year In November they assisted the Booster Club in Taste of the Town; in December they helped PAWS with their Annual Market Days; in February they welcomed guests to our Annual Community Prayer Breakfast. In February we also held our first Valentine’s Day Bundtlet Fundraiser which was a huge success. The organization sold bundtlets to students and they could gift them to other students, members of the SJA Faculty, siblings or parents. Shortly after in March, the members conducted our annual St Joseph’s Day Fundraiser in which they helped us raise money for the SJA General Fund and together we surpassed our initial goal.

Bloodhound Ambassadors is made up of different committees in which students can showcase which area

they thrive in The Welcoming Committee allows members to serve on the frontline at all formal and informal events that take place throughout our school and outside in the community. They make sure guests and everyone around feel welcomed, greeted and acknowledged The Shadow Day Committee is where members pair up with a prospective student or they assist in finding a student to be shadowed for a day at Saint Joseph Academy. This program allows interested students to truly see how it would be to be a “Bloodhound for a day ” We base their interests and likes with a current student that shares the same similarities. The Note-Card Writing Committee assists in handwriting cards to the SJA community, whether it be a thank you card to a donor, a prospective family that just came to visit or a simple greeting card The Campus Tour Committee gives tours of our campus and facilities to prospective families and visitors outlining the history, knowledge and mission of our school. These tours are important and offer a wealth of information. Our most recent committee, Saint Joseph’s Day Committee, allows members to truly engage with the SJA community in a fun filled setting on our big Saint Joseph’s Day of Giving. Overall, since the inception of Bloodhound Ambassadors back in 2018, the organization has given back countless amounts of time and service to promote and ensure the success of our school Students have benefited tremendously and when they return the following school year as Ambassadors, they ’re more confident than the previous year

Summer IMPROVEMENTS

The Saint Joseph Academy campus was buzzing with action this past summer as we prepared for the new school year with numerous upgrades and improvements on our beautiful campus. We are most grateful to the SJA community for their steadfast support in helping make these upgrades a reality. It is because of you that we are able to make these improvements to our school and for our students.

In 2021, SJA began creating a Capital Improvement Plan, supported by a Capital Improvement Fund. It aimed to address several large facility projects and needs around campus. In addition to the routine improvements in classrooms, with the help grant funds from the Kenedy Memorial Foundation and funds from the Our Tradition, Our Future Campaign, we were able to completely renovate three underutilized rooms into classrooms to accommodate our growing enrollment These classrooms all received new floors, cabinetry, decorative wainscoting , freshly painted walls, new whiteboards and updated technology!

In addition, Saint Joseph Academy received a major gift from alumnus Fernando De Leon ’97 combined with funds specifically allocated from the Our Tradition, Our Future Campaign to fully renovate the computer lab making it a state-of-the-art space complete with all new computers. Once routinely avoided on school tours, the new computer lab is now one of the highlights on the SJA campus.

The SJA Capital Improvement Fund has allowed the school to continue with its multi-phase roof replacement plan. Now in its second year, Phase II of the plan has been completed with the new roof over the Chapel wing The Capital Improvement Fund also enabled the school to replace all the stadium lights on Canales field with energy-efficient, long lasting LED lights. Many thanks to SJA alumnus, Chris Harwood ‘87 for assisting the school to ensure it maximized a special rebate incentive program with the Brownsville Public utilities Board.

Last but not least, the old Bookstore/Storage Room (formerly the main office pre-2005) was completely gutted and renovated with new floors, built-in cabinets and storage, exposed “rustic” ceiling,

SJA

new air-conditioning and painted walls. This newly designed space is the home of the new Bloodhound Café where students can gather over an iced-coffee and muffin or shop for the latest SJA merchandise. This project was made largely possible by the hardworking parent group, PAWS (Parents at Work) Their dedication to St Joe, its staff, and students is remarkable. This new space was due in part to the Bloodhound Ambassadors who ran the “I Love SJA” fundraising campaign amongst the student body, raising money to benefit their own school.

Saint Joseph Academy is blessed to have such an outstanding community of supporters who continue to show their love and respect for the school.

Award-winning author, Harvard Grad, and SJA Alumnus, Rudy Ruiz (SJA Class of 1986), released his second book this past September, Valley of Shadows, a visionary neo-Western blend of magical realism, mystery, and horror The book sheds light on the dark past of injustice, isolation, and suffering along the uS-Mexico border.

At an early age, Ruiz found writing and books to be most fascinating. He gives recognition to all his former English teachers at Saint Joseph Academy, particularly Jan Johnson, who encouraged his creative writing Additionally, he attributes growing up on the border as having a significant influence on his becoming a writer “I had a strong sense that I was growing up in a very unique and special place where cultures came together,” he said.

At Saint Joseph Academy, students come from both sides of the border, which reinforced his experience and gave him the chance to make friendships with classmates from both Texas and Mexico To him, that was a very special part of attending SJA, one which comes into play in his writing Especially in his novel The Resurrection of Fulgencio Ramirez, which is set in the 1950s, and the depictions of the school are based on his own father's stories and his years at SJA, which were fascinating and formative in both their lives

SJA

Like most SJA students, when Ruiz was attending school he set a high goal for himself To go to Har vard However, he didn’t realize how challenging that would be or how he would need to step up his game in academics “I'd been kind of sleepwalking through academics, but when I realized the kinds of grades I would need to be admitted, I became extremely focused,” he said.

He was never Valedictorian or even Salutatorian, but he achieved the grades necessary for Harvard, where he earned a bachelor's and Master ’s Degree “Achieving these goals during my time at Saint Joseph Academy gave me confidence and set the stage for my career,” he said.

Saint Joseph Academy prepared Ruiz for his challenges at Harvard and in life. “Even though there were classmates there who had a leg up because they had attended East Coast prep schools, I felt very well prepared academically to compete,” he said.

Advice to future writers

“I would say that we all have stories to tell. Think of your own experiences, the stories from your family members that have stuck with you over the years, and the fascinating aspects of life in the unique place you inhabit. From these sources, you can draw inspiration and share where we come from with the rest of the world. We have to keep telling our stories because nobody else will. And one more thing ...don't give up...as the saying goes: ‘Poco a poco se llega lejos.’ "

SpotliGht: COLE CONNER ‘16

Don’t be afraid of failure It ’s how we learn and grow as human beings Practice on the things you like to do, but don’t worry about not being good at first.

Since his graduation from Saint Joseph Academy, Cole Conner ’16 has been a very busy man, but he’s never forgotten his roots at SJA or how the people of SJA inspired him Like most of us who leave high school and make their way in the world, Cole has found his passions, things that he cares about and a career that motivates him

The university of Houston grad has spent the better part of his adult life dedicated to ser vice and philanthropy While at u of H, he earned a degree in Sports Management and Business with minors in Sales and Entrepreneurship.

“I spent most of my free time in college being involved in my fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE). As a result of my involvement, I was recognized as the Top undergraduate and Top Recruiter in North America

I also helped my fraternity win three Top Chapter Awards one every year for the last three years I was a member,” Cole said.

As part of that fraternity, he helped raise more than $150,000 for Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital He was then elected to ser ve on TKE’s International Board of Directors, representing the more than 15,000 undergraduates the fraternity has nationally. “Following graduation, I was reelected to the board for an additional 2-year term Beyond my involvement with TKE, I remain actively involved in the university of Houston’s young Alumni Association Board, St. Jude Children’s Research ALSAC Partner Advisory Board, and the university of Houston’s Athletic Foundation, where I serve as an ambassador,” Cole said.

Professionally, Conner works as an Account Executive for Strategic Accounts at Baker Communications Inc., a sales consulting firm that partners with over 50% of Fortune 500 companies to maximize sales effectiveness and performance. Conner manages large accounts, such as Amazon Web Services, Stripe, Alzheimer ’s Association, and Procore, focusing on organizational change and maximizing revenue

SJA

Cole will tell you that his early career at SJA was not filled with success or accolades. But, that time reminds him of the SJA motto, Ad Astra Per Aspera...to the stars through difficulties. “I faced numerous difficulties, but I was able to persevere, and thanks to the support from teachers and staff I was able to shine bright,” Cole said.

He went from an average student to an Honors/AP graduate. “I was proud of the progress and recognition, I was proudest of the newfound drive and

passion for success that had been instilled in me, all which would have never been possible without Saint Joseph Academy,” he said. Friends who either transferred into Saint Joseph Academy from other schools or made the decision to stay at Saint Joseph Academy have all pointed to Saint Joseph Academy as the reason for their success “I felt almost over prepared to attend college and found that my course curriculum in college was at a similar level to the curriculum provided at Saint Joseph Academy,” he said.

Because of this, Cole said he felt like he had a seamless transition to college life that allowed him to have a more balanced schedule where he had freedom to gain work experience and spend more time in student involvement, rather than strug gling to maintain academic success. Additionally, the AP credits and dual enrollment credits he earned while at Saint Joseph Academy gave him the freedom to take lighter course loads and focus on additional things during college.

If you asked him to give you a list of people from Saint Joseph Academy who impacted him, he would surely forget someone. “People like Meme Garza, who I knew before attending Saint Joseph Academy and keep in touch with to this day, are some of the people who pushed and developed me into the person I am today,” he said “I find that most people who work or serve with Saint Joseph Academy are there because they have a passion for making an impact in people’s lives

To have an entire staff be devoted to 100% of the student body ’s success is something I have found to be extremely rare in education No matter what grade you are in or how new you are to the school, you are still given outstanding guidance to help prepare you for college and life after high school ”

It goes back to developing the whole student, students like Cole Conner. SJA provides a safe space for students to fail and experiment. “use your time here to do so Get involved on campus, build relationships and be an overachiever,” he said. “Let it propel you forward past your peers ”

With a beautiful bright smile and a heart that demonstrates all the characteristics of selflessness, Senior Andrea Jasso, is an exemplary example of what it truly means to be Marist. Andrea is always willing to lend a helping hand and give back to others without second thought. Andrea has her heart set on becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon. She wants to “be a light during the dark times.” She truly believes her purpose is to serve others and help out when needed. She is truly passionate about her future and her aspiring dreams and demonstrates that passion to others through volunteering

Andrea had a busy Summer, traveling around the country around the country to different areas to strengthen her knowledge in various studies. Andrea’s enthusiasm to strengthen her Marist values took her to Esopus, New york where she attended the Marist youth Gathering. While she was there, she had the opportunity to listen to keynote speakers, interact in group activities, and make lifelong connections with others in attendance as well as grow her realationship with God Andrea then traveled to Seguin, Texas for Blue Bonnet Texas Girls State where she learned about the political world and how our government is structured. It was a transformative week of education, inspiration, and sisterhood. Here Andrea was educated on the duties, privileges, and responsibilities of American Citizenship. She also had the opportunity to learn the problems of government by performing the same duties as “real” office holders in the everyday world. Following an eventful week, Andrea had the honor of participating in the Space Entrepreneurships Summer Academy (SESA) We often hear of space camp however this was a course tailored to astropreneurship; space business. This provides novel educational experiences and hands on training for students and aspiring entrepreneurs that will create and accelerate the growth of an innovation ecosystem in Brownsville, Texas with emphasis on space and energy technologies Andrea’s Summer adventures ended with her traveling to Austin, Texas to attend the Texas Say What!

Tobacco-Free conference to focus on tobacco-prevention awareness, education and advocacy youth in attendance, gain the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully carry out innovative strategies centered on tobacco prevention and leadership

She has received the university of Rochester George Eastman young Leaders Award and is a member of the De Leon Scholar Program With God as the center of her life and realizing that without Him nothing is possible, this alone motivates her to believe that everything she has accomplished and achieved thus far has not been alone but with God right by her side She is extremely grateful for her parents as they have guided her and supported her in everything that she has set her heart on. Her parents have a huge influence on her and she thanks them for shaping her into the person that she is today because without them and God, none of this would have been possible.

As Andrea’s journey at Saint Joseph Academy comes to an end, she reflects back on all the wonderful memories she made here and is extremely grateful for all the positive and wonderful influences she’s encountered She wants future Bloodhounds to know that “Everything you hear about St. Joe is true; We are one big family.” SJA will always hold a special place in her heart.

teaCher SpotliGht: Jesse Abrego SJA

Chemistry Teacher, Jesse Abrego is the definition of doing good quietly He wears many hats at Saint Joseph Academy but you won’t hear from him much. His humble demeanor is a testament to the teachings of the Marist faith As he starts his 10th year at SJA , he reflects on the reasons he came to SJA and the hopes he has for his students.

Working at Saint Joseph Academy wasn’t the original plan 10 years ago. “I had originally planned on working near Houston as a chemist for Dow Chemical after graduating from college However, after crossing paths with the person I was ultimately going to marry, my plans changed,” he said. Mrs. Abrego, who is also a teacher at SJA in the religion department showed him the job opening listing and he applied. It made sense to him to apply because as he says, “I was raised Catholic, I was going to marry Catholic and I was a practicing Catholic – I was called to serve at a Catholic school.”

A few years later Mrs. Abrego followed. “One of the best parts of teaching at Saint Joseph Academy is working together with my wife and sharing our day,” he said

Abrego was originally a Math and Science Major In College, he was recognized as a Ford Scholar, Google Scholar and a NASA MuST Scholar. During one of his internships, he worked on a testbed component for the NASA Phoenix Mars Mission Spacecraft, which landed in the arctic region of Mars with the intention to examine the Martian soil for evidence of habitability

“My main research involved a classic electrochemical technique - cyclic voltammetry. I will spare the details, but that was basically the push for me to change majors to chemistry. It took a little bit longer, but I absolutely enjoyed each chemistry class I took from Analytical Chemistry to Organic Chemistry to even the dreadful Physical Chem.”

As previously stated, Mr. Abrego wears many hats on campus. He has been given the opportunity to assist with administrative tasks, such as coordinating summer school, developing , implementing and managing the bell schedule, teacher grid and block schedule, in addition to being the moderator for the Chem Club and the Science National Honor Society.

The main goal of Chem Club is to offer students an experience of chemistry outside of the classroom. Launched in 2016, student have been provided with opportunities to meet with and network with professors, researchers, graduate schools, and scientists via lectures, presentations, and science conferences “We have taken students to local, Regional and National American Chemical Society Conferences in Edinburg, Galveston, Lubbock, New Orleans, El Paso, and Austin,” said Abrego Similarly, Science NHS has connected students to a more expansive range of sciences It has introduced students to people in the medical community from pre-med students to

doctors, geophysics, and more Students are even tasked with presenting short research on interesting and relevant topics

This past year Abrego hit the ground running as SJA Signature Program Coordinator, a new initiative for students at SJA. The first cohort of participants in this program are now in the 10th grade and they are choosing their track this year They will choose between STEM, International Leadership, and Arts and Humanities, and they will be exposed to many careers pertaining to those fields Students will be conducting yearlong research on relevant topics as well as attending seminars.

With Mr. Abrego, Chemistry is no longer a subject to be feared, especially with him at the helm. “I try my best to highlight the significance of the chemical world around the students, often by connecting to real-life situations. And if that does not work, we blow stuff up. These students love unexpected chemical reactions, so I try to get them to participate as much as possible,” he said.

Throughout his lectures and class activities he reminds his students to make good choices, refrain from indulgences and to truly love each other As per the mission of SJA, he said “I try to cultivate young men and women to know and love Jesus and actively participate in the worship and mission of the Church ”
