HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE
Stationed before the library is the bell which has rung the coming and going of St. Martin's students from the very birth of the school at Green Acres. Ever since, it has quickened the steps of countless numbers, lest they be late. This bell has sounded the beginning of a thousand worthwhile accomplishments, and too, its ring has brought to a welcome conclusion those days when there was little cause to be proud. This vocal time piece has come to be symbolic of such things, and all that is within the covers of this book.
With each passing year, time, as is its way, blots out unpleasantries, and for each former student the old school bell will echo only pleasant memories: of the friends he had, the understanding he received, and of the things he accomplished, whether they be many or few. It will be symbolic of the many little things that linger to make a lattice of pleasant recollections which remain long after the accompanying labors and stress at the time have been forgotten.
It, too, will be reminiscent of those compelling thoughts and significant ideas which were instilled, and on occasion assimilated and taken away by the student as a part of his being.
As the years go by, the recollection ofits clang will serve to trigger a chain of these many memories which have been brought into focus so well by the very competent students and faculty sponsor who comprised the staff of this year's SHIELD. For their talent and skill, for the considerable time, and cooperative effort they contributed to make this 1958 Annual a reality, we say "thank you," for a job well done in the best St. Martin's tradition.
