A Message from the Academy President - Bill Barrett Dear St. Mary’s Academy Community, Welcome to the 2019 Gala, “Speakeasy”! We are so excited to share this evening with you in support of our wonderful school and community. I’d like to extend a special thank you to our Gala Chair, Andrea Morrissette. For the second year in a row, Andrea’s leadership and dedication to SMA helped make this evening a reality. A heartfelt thank you as well to all of our volunteers and donors. This event would simply not be possible without the enormous contributions of so many individuals. Thank you!! Your donations this evening support tuition assistance and program resources at St. Mary’s Academy. Approximately 30% of our students benefit from over $2 million in need-based tuition assistance each year. Program resources are enhanced based on needs identified by our three school principals and me, thanks to the generosity of our Gala sponsors, donors and winning bidders! Thus, we encourage you to bid early and bid often. Although the theme of our Gala changes each year, the importance of taking time to gather as a community to celebrate and support the amazing things happening at St. Mary’s Academy never changes. We are grateful for your generosity, as it ensures that we are able to continue to offer an outstanding educational experience for our students. Have a wonderful evening, enjoy time with friends old and new, bid generously, raise your paddles, and thank you again for all you do to support St. Mary’s Academy!! Warmest regards,

Bill Barrett Academy President

A message from the Board of Trustees Chair - Jean Armstrong Dear Members of the St. Mary’s Academy Community, Welcome to the 2019 SMA Gala, Speakeasy! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for attending tonight’s Gala. This annual tradition gives us the opportunity to come together to celebrate our community and all of the exciting happenings at SMA. We are grateful for everyone that makes up our community- including parents past and present, grandparents, alumnae, faculty, staff and administration as well as the many friends of the Academy. Your generous financial support of the Gala benefits Tuition Assistance and Program Resources for our students and faculty. Last year’s Gala raised over $260,000, and your generosity tonight will enable us to continue to provide a high quality education to approximately 30% of our students who would otherwise be unable to attend our wonderful school. The Board of Trustees and I would like to thank Andrea Morrissette, our Gala Chair, and Lea Frank, our Advancement Events Coordinator. Thanks also to Charlie Arbogast, our Director of Advancement, his staff, and all of our donors and volunteers whose dedication and hard work will guarantee that this year’s Gala will once again be a tremendous success. Most of all, we thank you, our families, friends and sponsors for your support, which makes it possible for us to look forward to a bright future while continuing the mission and core values established by the Sisters of Loretto over 150 years ago. Have fun tonight! Jean Armstrong Chair of the St. Mary’s Academy Board of Trustees

A message from the Gala Chair - Andrea Morrissette Dear St. Mary’s Families and Friends, Welcome to the 2019 SMA Speakeasy Gala! I hope that you enjoy your evening celebrating our exceptional school and community. Your financial support of the Gala provides the ability for students to attend SMA and support program resources that benefit all students at St. Mary’s Academy. I want to thank all of our generous event sponsors and the many volunteers that gave their time, financial support, and creativity to help make this evening possible. An enormous thank you to Lea Frank, who helps guide the Gala committee and myself. It has been a pleasure to work with such a dynamic team. Also, a special thank you to each one of you for attending the Gala in support of St. Mary’s Academy and making it possible to continue the mission and values established by the Sisters of Loretto. Last, but not least, enjoy your evening at our SMA Speakeasy Gala. We have the “bees knees” of offerings to take home so raise those paddles high and often!

Tonight’s Testimonial We are honored to have Stephanie Johnson and her family as our guests tonight. Stephanie Johnson is a licensed social worker currently employed at CeDAR, a UCHealth inpatient dualdiagnosis treatment facility. Her daughters, Ella and Hattie Gertge are flourishing juniors at St. Mary’s Academy. Ella plays volleyball and Hattie enjoys playing basketball. “As a single mother of twin girls, I never dreamed that my girls would be blessed with the opportunity to attend private school. All three of us remain eternally grateful for the community at St. Mary’s Academy and the continued support of the scholarship fund.” -Stephanie Johnson TUITION ASSISTANCE The majority of the money raised at the Gala supports the SMA Tuition Assistance Fund. In the 2018-19 school year, SMA is providing more that $2 million in tuition assistance to approximately 30% of our students, allowing us to maintain a diverse school community, representative of the larger world we live in and the diverse global workforce our students will enter. What you might not know about tuition assistance at SMA: • SMA follows Principles of Good Practices for Tuition Assistance from NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) • SMA uses SSS (School and Student Services) to have a uniform method to measure the ability of families to pay education costs. • Recipients of Tuition Assistance NEED Based Tuition Assistance • Available to both boys and girls in grade levels K-12 • Each family must re-apply for tuition assistance each year – it is not automatically awarded from year to year • Awards range from 10 percent tuition to over 90 percent MERIT Based Tuition Assistance – High School Merit Scholars • Available to girls in grades 9 -12 • Awarded to 10 high school girls per grade each year • Merit based scholarships are $3,400 annually 9

“Power is of two kinds, One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love.

Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishent.” -Mahatma Gandi

My Mission for Today “I embrace each day by reading this quote and looking at life with determination to live in the present. I inspire others to be their best through a generosity of spirit and acknowledgement of their special gifts. Each day I believe that my health, my family, my friends, and my work will continue to contribute to my success. I am quick to laugh, and to accept the joy in other’s laughter. I promote teamwork and purposefulness in all of my communities, which in turn brings achievement and success to individuals. I end each day knowing there is always more to learn, and more happiness in my future.” -Florence Swanson

In loving memory of Florence Swanson (SMA Lower School Principal, 2015-2018). A passionate wife, mother, leader and friend. On behalf of the entire Swanson family, thank you for accepting Florence into the SMA Community. 33
