Rationale (200 words) This semester I am going to concentrate on skills driven briefs, both for development and to display my main areas of skill in final portfolio work. A number of my self-written briefs are based on illustration and image, as this is something I want to focus on. I am going to be working with a range of different print and production methods, because I intend to have print as my main area of focus in my professional design practice. Sustainability is also something that I feel should be thought about when I produce design work, especially when considering print. I have chosen a sustainability themed competition brief to work on to enforce my design ethic, it will also allow me to work on something live and compete with other designers. InPress is taking up a large part of my efforts this term, as it is something I am passionate abut and want to carry on past graduation. It also displays my organisational skills, and ability to manage and direct a project. The InPress brief in particular tests my people skills, both from a networking perspective, but also from the point of working in a small group, which will prepare me for working in a studio environment. Statement of Intent (SOI) - (400 words) I am going to begin my first week with primary research. I intend to visit the museum archives to study human and animal anatomy for my collaborative brief with Will. I am also going to go to the Royal Armouries to study mechanical parts first hand and also study Japanese armour and Samurai for the Matsuri brief. A venue and date must also be decided for the next InPress event. I will then research, find and visit scrap yards to aid my primary research into machine parts, in relation to the brief I am working on with Will. I will start sketching and creating imagery for this brief early, to allow for time to experiment with different print and production methods. InPress will also start discussing ideas and initial designs for our branding and website. I think it will be necessary to visit Vernon street for a book binding induction. I intend to make an illustration based book for Matsuri, so would like to experiment with different ways to produce this. I will probably want to revisit the museum archives by week four, as there is a lot to look at in relation to the briefs that I am working on. Also as my designs progress and develop, I may find that there are more things that I would like to view that now have more relevance. This week I will also concentrate on researching Japanese art and culture and producing designs in relation to this. In week five I will make a start on the competition brief, Valuing Water. I will treat this as a short running brief, only lasting three weeks, this week beginning with research and collection of facts. I will leave time to tweak for competition submission after Christmas. Printing for Matsuri will also commence this week. The sixth week will concentrate on creating design work for Valuing Water. I will also start experimenting with different print and production methods with Will, and book binding for Matsuri.
