RATIONALE During my final major project, I am going to focus on designing for sustainable print. I am going to explore the relation between traditional and commercial printing processes, and attempt to define my role as a designer by exploring the different levels and definitions of sustainability in relation to print.

I intend to focus on fewer, more substantial briefs and push them to their limits by creating and proposing an extensive range. My work will be heavily image and illustration based as this is where my strengths lie. However I am also going to apply these skills across branding and publication design projects to diversify the work within my final major project and portfolio.

Design Context Title Statement of intent

Design Context

I based my design context brief on sustainable print; I felt this was appropriate after writing my dissertation on this subject matter. Print is something I am passionate about and I am interested in sustainable design, but it is not something I entirely base my practice on, as I know that there isn’t necessarily room for design with such strict morals.

I decided that the most suitable format for my design context was a publication as I included a lot of case studies and articles. I also wanted to include my dissertation, as it is relevant to my subject matter. Unfortunately I didn’t get to spend as much time on this brief as I would have liked, as I prioritised the briefs that included working for clients.

BRIEF 1 This brief gave me the opportunity to work with a talented illustrator and surface pattern designer, allowing me to combine my interests in branding and illustration design. This gave me a different take on illustration as I had the chance to work with it from a different perspective. Having to apply surface pattern and illustration from a strictly graphic design aspect has helped inform my own illustrative practice. I spent the majority of the brief designing the logo, as the client was quite a perfectionist. The range produced after came together quickly and smoothly, the only problem being ordering materials and stocks and arranging printing slots. Both the client and me are happy with the quality and quantity of the branding range.

BRIEF 2 I began this brief with the intention to develop on a past project that focused on encouraging designers to print sustainably. However I neglected this brief in favour for others and had to come up with the design solution quickly. The aim for this brief was to learn more about sustainable and environmentally friendly methods of print. I decided to once again to produce a calendar in my limited amount of time, which I designed and manufactured in two weeks alongside other briefs.

BRIEF 3 I chose the competition brief ‘UK Greetings’ to test my ability when reacting to a live brief intended for commercial use. This was a chance to apply my illustrations to a design brief.

This was a long running brief alongside others. The illustrations themselves took the most time and after they were completed the range came together well. I enjoyed this project as it helped me to understand how to apply my illustrations in a design context, which is something I have struggled with in the past.

BRIEF 4 This was a play brief, a chance for me to develop my illustration and printmaking based on a subject matter that I am interested in. It allowed me to show my interest in different cultures, currently in particular Asian art and design. After the last module I developed an interest in creating installations and design pieces intended for interiors, this brief gave me the opportunity to develop on this and create products that I feel are fit to display at the end of year shows. This has been the longest running brief as from researching the subject matter to drawing the illustrations to applying them to different printing techniques it has been a long, yet rewarding process. I also had the chance to experiment with traditional printing techniques such as intaglio, which I have been intending to do for a

while.

BRIEF 5 Marty, Niall, Matt and myself decided to pitch for the Graphic Design yearbook; sadly we didn’t get that job, but instead we were offered the Art & Design (Interdisciplinary) yearbook. This was one of our choices so we were happy to be offered this job. This brief was a great learning experience, as we had to deal with real clients, along with producing a design that is suitable for commercial print. We also had to work to a budget and keep cost to a minimum, as marketing had recently cut budget for some of the yearbooks.

Collaborating with three other people and working to real deadlines taught me to be more organised and manage my time effectively. Unfortunately we had a late start on this project, as it took quite a long time for the programme tutors to meet with us, they did however provide us with all the needed content very promptly. From then on it was quite an intense brief, which took up a lot of time as a lot of meetings were involved alongside the time it took to actually design. Although there were some complications and very stressful moments, especially when getting the final designs signed off, I really value the experience I had working on this project.
