GENERAL ARTISTIC DIRECTOR NACHO DUATO

OUT OF LOVE FOR THE WORLD

WE ARE THE STAATSBALLETT BERLIN

Choreography, the submerging of the self in music and the language of body movement, is like “un acto de amor”, an act of love in which boundaries dissolve and man and the world recognise each other. At the same time, it is a declaration of love to the world and a plea for the social relevance of dance.

Beautiful or ugly – these terms play no role in such a poetic investigation; terror, innocence, poetry, horror – all things become equal as the beautiful is seen in the ugly, the ugly in the beautiful. It is this tension field that all three premieres of the 2015 | 2016 season navigate: “Jewels”, choreographed by George Balanchine in 1967, reflects on the clarity of emeralds, rubies and diamonds, and, using a neo-classical language of movement, defines the purist and abstract gems of dance: pure elegance, perfection, aimless understatement. Diametrically opposed to this choreographic abstraction stands “Herrumbre”, both as a highly emotional examination of terror and violence and a warning plea for the safeguarding of human dignity. Violence versus the beauty of the voice is also the topic of my own choreography “Castrati”, which is part of the program, “Duato I Kylián I Naharin”.

The approaching season’s program moves along the outer limits of reality, examining aesthetic boundaries where human feeling is extreme and uncontrolled. There, on that line, the poetic-political power of dance ignites. The coexistence of beauty, perfection, radiance and the examination of disturbing images of human terror evoke emotions that could hardly be more contrary. Viewing habits are put to the test, familiar thinking patterns are broken down.

The premieres are embedded in the classic repertoire of the Staatsballett Berlin, featuring “The Sleeping Beauty”, “Swan Lake”, “The Nutcracker”, “Giselle”, “Onegin”, “Romeo and Juliet” as well as the two productions “Multiplicity. Forms of Silence and Emptiness” and the triple bill “Duato I Kylián”, which helped to announce my path during the last season. Now, new performances of idiosyncratic beauty await you. Possibly disturbing, sometimes provocative, they transform images and experiences of the 21st century by way of a modern dance vocabulary, and they see themselves as part of a social statement on the changes of our time. Nacho Duato General Artistic Director Staatsballett Berlin

THE TIME IS RIGHT The curtain for Nacho Duato’s second season rises. The Friends and Supporters of the Staatsballett Berlin are looking forward to it! Of course, our foremost attention lies on the exciting premieres: With Duato’s “Herrumbre” the Staatsballett will perform a highly political piece. We think this suits Berlin well and meets the high aspirations of a capital’s ballet. The time is right for it. Another highlight of the season will be Ohad Naharin’s contribution to the evening “Duato | Kylián | Naharin“. With his contemporary approach, Naharin offers ballet new and fascinating perspectives. This will be a welcomed challenge for the company, yet we are sure that the ensemble will master it with brilliance. As the summer premiere, George Balanchine’s “Jewels” will be no less brilliant. Sticking to its principles of presenting the whole variety of ballet, many of the beloved classics will remain in the repertoire, which we are looking forward to as well. But first and foremost we are looking forward to all the exciting encounters with the Staatsballett dancers and the team, on stage as well as backstage. Because dance equals encounters. This we will continue to support in 2015/2016.

However, the focus of “Castrati” lies on the dark side of the castrati era. Jirˇ í Kylián’s piece equally revolves around the genital – since the French term “petite mort” describes nothing else but the sexual highpoint. The music is by Mozart. IN THE DARK OF THE NIGHT

Choreography by Nacho Duato Music by Pedro Alcalde, Sergio Caballero and David Darling When the soul begins to rust – A photograph of the American deten tioncamp Guantanamo became the starting point for this ballet. In his choreography, Nacho Duato transforms the images of violence spread by the media into movements. By doing so he wants to raise awareness for a subject that we all should care for. As for how we treat others also defines who we are ourselves. Premiere on 14 February 2016 Staatsoper im Schiller Theater 14 16 18 21 26 28 02

LOVE’S LOST

Dance until death: Giselle loves not only dancing but also Albrecht. Yet, he has already been promised to someone else. Upon learning the truth, Giselle loses her mind and dies. After her death, she is condemned to seduce men into dancing in the dark forest until they die from exhaustion. One day, Albrecht ventures into the forest … Patrice Bart remains true to the French tradition and restages this ballet classic with all the human abysses the story provides. his legendary story ballet visible what in Alexander Pushkin’s verse novel “Eugen Onegin” is so masterly told.

In hardly any other tale, love and misery are as closely linked as in “Romeo and Juliet”. John Cranko has taken up this timeless story, too. In his groundbreaking production he is not afraid to display the whole emotional spectrum with the means of classical ballet: from the very first meeting of the two young lovers and the blind hatred of their families to the tragic death.

Saying goodbye is at the center of Nacho Duato’s choreography “Static Time” (Music: Rachmaninov, Schubert among others) and equally affects his “White Darkness” (Music: Jenkins), his famous ballet that deals with the consequences of drug abuse. But instead of telling moral tales, his main concern is what it means to be a human being. This issue also concerns Jirˇ í Kylián: In “Click-Pause-Silence” he dissects a Bach composition and by doing so looks for the elements of life itself. PREMIERE JEWELS Choreography by George Balanchine Music by Garbiel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky and Peter I. Tchaikovsky The window display of the jewelry store Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue inspired George Balanchine to create this abstract ballet. The remarkable sparkle of rubies, emeralds, and diamonds provided him with associations, which he turned into a brilliant dance composition. Understatement and elegance are his trademarks, which unmistakably come to shine in this production and which will challenge the dancers. THE NUTCRACKER Ballet féerie by Vasily Medvedev and Yuri Burlaka Music by Peter I. Tchaikovsky This Christmas night is full of magic: The enchanting Nutcracker takes little Clara into a world full of fantasy. Here she meets dancing tin soldiers, ambassadors from distant kingdoms and of course the Nutcracker Prince. Vasily Medvedev and Yuri Burlaka created a version of this ballet full of nostalgia, which is – together with its costumes and stage design – all based on the original from 1892.

SWAN LAKE

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY

MULTIPLICITY. FORMS OF SILENCE AND EMPTINESS

Choreography and staging by Patrice Bart after Ivanov and Petipa Music by Peter I. Tchaikovsky

Choreography and staging by Nacho Duato Music by Peter I. Tchaikovsky

Choreography by Nacho Duato Music by Johann Sebastian Bach

With a spell-bound swan princess, scheming relatives and a prince at odds with himself, “Swan Lake” is classical ballet at its best. This beloved fairy tale has been transformed into opulent dance scenarios many times. Patrice Bart’s production is based on the traditional movements but features sensibly refreshed characters. This way, the myth of Swan lake receives a careful reinterpretation.

Nacho Duato has discovered Tchaikovsky’s popular classic anew and focuses on the plot of this well-known ballet fairy tale. The result: enchantingly fresh images that let this classic shine with new splendor – but without sparing the brilliance and grace of classical dance en pointe. The long-awaited ballet magic enfolds in the finest décor, delicate as porcelain and yet marvelously opulent at the same time.

With this choreography Nacho Duato pays tribute to the composer Johann Sebastian Bach by the means of dance. With great respect and care, Duato translates Bach’s compositions into moved and moving images. In a one-of-a-kind symbiosis of dance and music forms and emotions converge. Dancers turn into notes. And the audience is asked to listen with its eyes.

It is a decade-long tradition that every year the students of the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin present the results of their training on the stages of the opera houses of Berlin with a festive gala. From the youngest to the graduates – all students are part of a show created by the Berlin Kammertänzer Gregor Seyffert, which presents the many facets of a professional dance education. In January and in March, two different programs will be staged.

Never give up! This is the message of “Hansel & Gretel”. Choreo grapher and director Giorgio Madia has devised the famous fairy tale for the big stage with the children of “Tanz ist KLASSE! – Kinder tanzen”. Thus, the more than 50 performers are not much older than the members of the audience. Madia’s brother Claudio created spaces and objects to play with, which with the verve of the young performers unfold to great effect. Yet, the whole stage design is made out of cardboard alone. 4
