No town in Flanders appeals so much to the imagination as this centuries-old university town. Stroll through a rich historical heritage. Enjoy the jovial Burgundian urban culture. With the help of the Royal Leuven Guides Association, Tourism Leuven organises guided tours lasting an average of 2 hours. Besides our standard offering – visits to the Town Hall, the Great Beguinage and St. Peter’s Church - we also offer a number of themed walks and cycling trips. Tourism Leuven also organises daytrips. These combine a tour with a town guide and a lunch. The structure of the programme depends on the kind of day trip the party chooses.
Tours with Official Town Guide Discover Leuven On this walk, you will discover the main attractions and gain a good overall picture of the city, an ideal first encounter. Your walk takes in the Grote Markt with the town hall and St. Peter’s Church, both buildings designed by the architect Mathieu de Layens, who elevated the Brabant Gothic style to its apex. You will also discover the many university buildings and other attractive spots in the city. And, of course, no tour of Leuven would be complete without a visit to the Grand Béguinage, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
New architecture Besides magnificent centuries-old buildings, Leuven and its sub-boroughs also have their new architectural tours de force. The most important of these are to be found along the Vaartkom Station Area - Philips Site axis where you can admire InBev’s international headquarters, the restyled Martelarenplein and the striking red bus station with the new canopies over its bays. The Provincial Building with integral works of art and Tweebronnen Municipal Library by the wellknown architect Henri Vandevelde are eminently worthy of your attention.
Leuven Beer Stories During this walk, a guide will take you on a journey of discovery that takes in old cafés and breweries, some of which are no longer there. They will recount the history of Royal Leuven - the city of beer: Is so much beer really drunk here? Where have all the breweries gone? Is there a difference between a pub and a tavern? Why are there so many cafés on the Oude Markt? How did Leuven’s beer acquire such a reputation? Is it true that brewers used fish scales and pigs’ trotters and that beer was brewed with water from the River Dyle? You will be given the answers to all these questions and many more on a walk that will even interest teetotallers.
Green spots On this walk, which takes you through Leuven’s wealth of gardens and parks, you can see how, besides being an architecturally interesting spot, it is also a green town where it is pleasant to relax. You stroll past the charming statues in the garden of the Erasmus Building (Faculty of Letters), through the magnificent St. Donatus Park (municipal park), which was laid out on the remains of the 12th century town wall following the model of English landscaped parks and the garden of Atrecht College with the Tree of Great Regret. You finish in Dijle Park, the most romantic park in Leuven.
University walk This walk illustrates the ties between Leuven’s centuries-old university and the town. You stroll past the University Hall, which has played a central part in the history of the university from its foundation down to the present. This buil ding adjoins the Oude Markt, a square that is also known as the world’s longest bar and plays a special part in the life of many a student. The walk past old colleges (including Pope’s College, Van Dale College, Atrecht College, Right Wing College, etc.) tells the fascinating history of the origin and use of these buildings over the centuries. And behind all these old facades and buildings you discover how the university copes with the infrastructure needs of a mo dern teaching institution, taking into account the relevant architectural intentions. The Central University Library is a living reminder of the horrors of the First World War and of the American generosity that restored the glory of the destroyed library. The Erasmus Building (Faculty of Letters) with its poetry garden, designed by Jacques Wirtz, is an oasis of calm in the heart of the town and a real discovery for many.

Statue walk
AuthentHip Leuven
Like most towns, Leuven has many statues. You stroll through the centre where the concentration of statues and monuments is highest. You follow a route that illustrates the evolution of the visual arts in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. Thus you take in the town hall whose niches of 1849 are populated by statues of every one who had been important for Leuven up to then. In the surrounding streets, you find, in addition to a number of statues of politically, socio-economically or scientifically important citizens of Leuven, war memorials, commemorative statues and monuments to the martyrs that have been put up since the First World War. Recently, amusing and/or symbolic statues such as the Landlady, Fonske (the student) and Renée (the girl student) have been erected as symbols of the university presence in Leuven. Admire the Totem by Jan Fabre and the Friendship Balloon, which represents Leuven’s unique ‘Koninklijk Verbond der Jaartallen’ (Age Association).
Leuven is a lively contemporary city where authenticity still means something. You can tell from the many fine boutiques, craft shops, galleries, restaurants and cafés in the city centre. This walk will let you stroll along streets and squares with unique addresses that you wouldn't find on your own as a visitor. The guide also tells you about the colourful commercial past of these places and neighbourhoods which enhances the cosy atmosphere that still exists today even more. Discover lively Leuven in style and wet your appetite completely.
Hapje Stapje (Snacking Stroll) In 2009 Leuven was made the Town of Taste. Because of this, Tourism Leuven and the Royal Leuven Guides Association have together launched a new walk in Leuven, full of tasty tales of eating and drinking. And if your mouth starts to water, there is a sweet or savoury something waiting. From medieval markets to today’s successful Friday market, from penurious meals in university colleges to the culinary tours de force of nowadays, from a university beer and wine cellar to the contemporary ‘fac’ bars, all of these and more are on offer.

Visit the town hall and St. Peter’s Church Obviously, the town hall and St. Peter’s Church - two of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in Leuven - can also be visited with an official town guide. They exemplify the town’s colourful history. The town hall is one of the most famous gothic town halls in the world and is mentioned in the 15th century records of the town treasurer. On its facade you see, besides hundreds of statues representing important citizens of Leuven, a number of corbels that represent biblical scenes whose recurring themes of guilt and atonement had a didactic and admonitory function. Inside the town hall you find such things as magnificent carved woodwork, monumental paintings and portraits of all the former mayors of Leuven since the town was under French rule. St. Peter’s Church is a magnificent example of Brabant high gothic and it is not only its exterior that makes it a particularly interesting church. Inside you will discover a number of treasures of gothic art and some first rate works by the Flemish primitives such as The Last Supper by Dirk Bouts.

Cycling trips Leuven and its abbeys Leuven has always had ample religious life. The churches, chapels, abbeys and places of worship resulting from this made their mark on the architecture and appearance of the town. On this 3-hour cycling trip we follow a trail of religious buildings in and around the centre, ranging from the Great Beguinage, Abbey Sint-Geertrui, Park Abbey and Vlierbeek Abbey. En route, we become acquainted with the fascinating history of all these buildings and of the people who lived and worked there.
