ND Industries’ reactive thread locking processes apply dry-tothe-touch chemical adhesives to your internally or externally threaded fasteners. During fastener installation, the microencapsulated components mix together, causing a chemical reaction which locks and seals the mating parts. With ND’s Expand-A-Lock formula a 20-50% material expansion also occurs, filling the gaps between mating fastener threads and creating the highest strength threadlocker available.

Benefits of Pre-Applied Reactive Thread Locking & Sealing Nuts include: • Lock nuts do not require part orientation • Can be customized by ND processing centers to meet • Will not weaken the fastener though cutting or deformation your technical specifications required for some other locking elements • Are a cost effective solution when compared to hand applied • Allows for the use of a shorter bolt, thus decreasing weight bottled product or lock washers of the assembly Contact ND to learn more about our nut pre-application process and available formulations. THERE’S a whole spectrum of difference in how Covid-19 has affected companies, even within the same sectors. Some have maintained business as usual, as far as possible, while others have felt the disruption rather more keenly, and maybe even had employees affected personally by the virus. Likewise, businesses are at different stages in recovering from lockdown – many UK fastener businesses still have some employees on furlough (at least some of the time), for example. One thing’s for sure, Covid-19 hasn’t all blown over just yet, so while business is on a surer footing than it was in April and May, there are still plenty of options on the table about how best to get back to ‘normal’. Business owners and managers will be asked searching questions that they’ve probably never anticipated having to contemplate. There are of course opportunities to do things better, as we touched on in our last print mag. This issue we speak to a wealth of businesses that survived and – in some cases – actively benefitted from waves of demand that probably wouldn’t have happened in your typical year. There’s also plenty of expert opinion and educated speculation on how businesses can adapt and ready themselves by boosting efficiency and solving their digital conundrums. For your average small to medium enterprise, planning for a possible pandemic and subsequent lockdown will simply have not been on the agenda, pre-2020. Perhaps the silver lining is that all companies that have been through this period – whether they got away with almost business as usual or have scraped through – they will feel ready for almost anything.

As part of our commitment to the environment, Torque Magazine is fully recyclable.

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

How did you first get into the fastener industry? My grandfather, Doug Berry, started Advance Components 50 years ago. My first foray into the fastener industry was labelling hot sauce bottles in the warehouse for him. However, I held jobs in IT and software sales before joining Advance Components two years ago. Can you outline a typical day in your role as Regional Sales Manager? Advance Components is a master stocking distributor, so I work with other industry distributors across the East Coast. I am often on the road for meetings and attending industry events. At the core of what I do is focusing on helping our distributors service their customers better. What are your responsibilities as Board Secretary of the Young Fastener Professionals association (YFP)? As the Board Secretary I am responsible for all administrative tasks. I schedule and coordinate all meetings between board members. I also establish meeting agendas, take minutes, and outline defined goals and tasks for each member post meeting. Basically, I keep everything organised and keep the ball rolling. What work does the YFP association do, and how does it support its members? YFP aims to provide a platform for young professionals to become more engaged in the industry. We also aim to be a resource for businesses that employ or wish to employ young professionals. We do this through providing education and networking opportunities, as well as recruiting resources. More generally, how important are associations in supporting young people in the industry? Associations are extremely important for engagement and retention of young people in the industry. A study from the US Census Bureau interviewed 53.5 million adults between the ages of 18-34 and revealed that 87% said, “professional or career growth and development opportunities” are a top factor in their decision to stay at a company. Young professionals want learning opportunities and to be involved. Associations are poised to provide this through education grants and scholarships, mentorship programmes and social and networking functions.

// Whether you're a young professional, or female, anyone from an underrepresented group just wants to feel welcomed and heard. //

What more can be done to attract young people towards a career in the fastener industry, particularly women and other less represented groups? There is a lot of information out there that outlines what certain groups of people value, such as the statistic from the US Census Bureau I referenced before. However, I think at the end of the day whether you are a young professional, or female, anyone from an underrepresented group just wants to feel welcomed and heard. We can do a lot to bring in more diversity by simply making the effort to do so. Did you complete any apprenticeship schemes, and how useful were they? I have not technically completed an apprenticeship, but I have worked just about every job at Advance Components, from bagging parts to answering phones at the front desk. That experience has been a huge asset because it has given me a solid foundation to grow from. Do you think there is scope for more apprentice or training schemes for young people in the industry? I think there is always room for improvement! Apprenticeship and training schemes obviously give young people an introduction to the industry they might not have otherwise had. However, day-to-day office interaction is a great place to focus also. It is often said that young people prefer a mentor instead of a boss, so building that culture within your company is likely to help attract young talent as well. What is your favourite thing about working in the fastener industry? While I do love selling specialty fasteners, my favourite thing about the industry is the people.

Established 1972, Advance Components is a master stocking distributor of industrial fasteners

WHEN THE GOING GETS

TOUGH… While the Covid-19 pandemic has sent shockwaves through industry supply chains around the globe, European wholesaler Ambrovit has deemed this period one of ‘renewal and revolution’ as it adapts to conquer the challenges presented.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going” is a phrase coined the world over, and one which Italian bolt and screw wholesaler Ambrovit has put into practice in recent months. At a difficult time, where everything has become more complicated as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Ambrovit believes it has summoned the determination to face the situation in a constructive manner. The distributor’s management team, drawing on all its skills, worked as a team with renewed commitment to immediately realise that new organisational, operational and management approaches were called for. After a preliminary experimental phase, these changes have given such significant results that they are planned to become permanent in the future. At the start of the outbreak, Ambrovit took prompt and rigorous actions to safeguard the health of its staff, while implementing new technologies for production logistics. The

Research and development of new products has continued throughout the pandemic.

// This has been a period of renewal and ‘revolution’ which has been tried, tested and successfully implemented. // firm’s main technical innovation involved a new automatic system for quality control management of incoming materials, which are pre-processed, checked and then put up for sale. The technological improvements have commenced at the same pace as the research and development of new products, which are to be added to the already wide range in the wholesaler’s catalogue. In response to much demand within the market, Ambrovit has added new types of bolts, substantially increasing the range already on offer for this type of product. Additionally, after careful product analysis and a series of control and verification procedures, Ambrovit can now offer its clients various types of rivets in a whole range of different sizes. The catalogue has also seen the addition of new, patented high-performance screws for concrete, which are ETA certified and feature a special thread that allows them to be fixed directly onto the material. The wholesaler has also seen important successes relating

to its after-sales service. Until now, Ambrovit customers have been able to rely on fast delivery of all products in the catalogue, with its order verification procedure and punctuality in shipping and delivery. Now, customers will also be able to access an after-sales service with qualified staff available to assist them with information on how to use or apply its products, as well as provide advice on which products are most appropriate for their needs. According to Ambrovit, this has been a period of both renewal and ‘revolution’ which has been tried, tested, and successfully implemented in the face of the impacts of Covid19. As a result, the wholesaler now considers 2020 as a year of transition, in which the structure of its ‘springboard’ has been strengthened to make an active contribution to market recovery in this sector. www.ambrovit.com

BENELUX MARKET OVERVIEW How is the Benelux fastener market performing in 2020? Torque brings together views from some of the major suppliers…

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

DE WITT / DON QUICHOTTE STAFA “Since 2014-15 I would say the Dutch market was very good. There were good rates of growth, house prices decreasing, lots of construction and projects, good price levels. “I think it’s a little too early to get a real opinion on Covid-19, but of course there was a shock. People still don’t know how it’s really going, there was not a complete lockdown like in other countries like France, Italy Spain, and the UK, so construction work and insulation work was still going on. “But we have felt that it slowed down. I don’t know if it slowed down because people were in shock or if there is really less work, and I think that is really for the next few months to see how that is going. So, I think the Dutch market is doing quite well, but we are unsure where it is going.”

16

torque-expo.com

“Prior to the Covid-19 lockdown, the Netherlands fastener market was very good. In fact, 2020 started much better as 2019 ended. “Now, we believe that the market is still going well. Of course, some companies are suffering a lot from the whole lockdown and this terrible situation, but we are active in many different branches and have not experienced big issues. “We believe the Netherlands government acted in the right way, in terms of support for businesses during the lockdown, but fortunately our business was not affected too much, so we did not need to ask for government support.”

MARKET DATA THE NETHERLANDS IS THE EU’S SIXTH LARGEST ECONOMY The fastener market has an annual turnover of about half a billion euros and several thousands of jobs in the Netherlands, says NEVIB, the Dutch association of importers of fasteners and related industrial products (www.nevib.nl) An OECD economic survey of the Netherlands noted the economy was in the midst of strong expansion. In June 2020, the OECD said that governmental interventions over Covid-19 had been “timely and supportive”. However, noting output and employment will be slow to recover, it said the economy will require fiscal policy to provide stimulus for “structural change, inclusiveness and the environment”. The OECD is an intergovernmental economic organisation with 37 member countries.

EUROFAST ZIRCON “While Belgium has suffered severe losses due to Covid-19, we remain optimistic that the DIY market in the Netherlands will continue its explosive, upward trend.” [DIY retail trade in the Netherlands grew 29.3% in March 2020, according to Mix Vakblad (via DIYInternational.com].

“As specialists in fasteners for flat roofing we can say that Covid-19 was not of much influence on our daily business and business is still going great. The future advantages of the Benelux fastener market: “Since we have bought Baltic Fasteners, now operating as Eurofast Poland, we also have a fully certified cladding programme and we aim for more market share in this construction area in EU. We are shifting from being a partner in mechanical fastening solutions for flat roof to the partner (manufacturer and full-service technical consultancy company) in mechanical fastening solutions for the complete building envelope.”

EMERGING STRONGER OUT OF CRISIS Stafa already had a full schedule of updates and enhancements for 2019 and 2020, including a new ERP system and Kanban offering. With the added challenge of Covid-19, Stafa had to be ever more nimble, learning and adapting to continue developing. Torque speaks with Ivo van Gool (Sales Director), Joep van Gool (Director Finance and Operations) and Pim van Leeuwen (Commercial Director). TAFA has had an incredibly busy 24 months; Last year it underwent a complete rebrand and since then Stafa has begun work on a new ERP system, webshop and even a new Kanban service. Following all that, the fastener business may then perhaps have been content to sit back for the next few months, all things considered. But not so, says Sales Director Ivo van Gool. “Stafa never takes it easy. We are constantly looking for opportunities and possibilities.” Of course, Covid-19 has also been thrown into that mix. The pandemic’s beginnings at the very end of 2019 took a while to forcibly impact on trading in Europe. Indeed, Stafa actually experienced a very positive trading start to 2020. Commercial Director Pim van Leeuwen picks up the story: “Everything was going very well and the predicted growth within the company was on schedule and even higher than expected. Even though the pandemic caused quite a lot of disruption in the whole world, we were able to keep running on full scale. We even recently enlarged our third warehouse shift, due to a very high amount of incoming orders.” Stafa continued trading throughout, even during the strict government-enforced lockdowns, despite the significant challenges these brought. “Luckily we were able to remain open, although many of our employees needed to work from home. We managed to keep all processes running properly without major issues.

S

18

“All employees that started working from home had set up a fully functioning home-office. This was quite a challenge, but we managed. In our warehouse we took the necessary measures specified by the RIVM (the Netherlands’ National Institute for Health and Environment). “Fortunately we had no incidents. We were less busy for a few weeks during the lockdown, but after that it became even more busy than it was before; it was challenging, but we feel that we have been very fortunate too.” STAFA has a significant global footprint – it currently supplies more than 50 countries. It also has sites and staff across multiple sites in Europe and in Taiwan, but coping with differing lockdown rules in different territories was not a major headache: “We mainly have offices abroad. Our strategy has been that people must work from home as much as possible, which includes all the international colleagues. So, to be honest we did not experience many big problems.” Despite its size, Stafa is a family-run business. Did that help it tackle the challenges operating during the pandemic, Torque asks?

“We do think that our family business has many advantages for Stafa’s employees; in terms of atmosphere, flexibility and personal attention. This is particularly important in these times, so we do expect it to offer benefits somewhere. But this is difficult to measure, of course.” Supplying a variety of sectors has also paid off in the disruption. “Because we operate with a wide range of products and in a variety of markets, we keep on growing. And the last weeks have been extremely busy, so we cannot complain. “Of course, there are sectors which are more affected than others, but because we are well spread this isn’t a problem for us.” One such area that has seen an upsurge has been within the construction sector, more specifically, timber construction, with Stafa revealing that it has seen more and more customers opt for wood construction over steel. Handily, its chipboard and MULTI+ screws were recently awarded the European Technical Assessment (ETA) rating. While the range itself is no different, the ETA rating has enabled STAFA to approach customers who require the mark.

// We have taken some time to implement our new ERP and WMS system. This represents a major step forward for Stafa. // “A significant step forwards” A new ERP system is part of a wealth of service enhancements for Stafa’s customers. So, what kind of difference will that make to the firm and it’s customers? “We have taken quite some time to implement our new ERP and WMS system,” says Director of Finance and Operation Joep van Gool. “It is an intensive and complex project. It takes a lot of time to properly map all processes. This represents a major step forward for Stafa, which will also benefit our customers. We are very excited and hope to complete this major project as soon as possible. “It is the first time that our ERP system and webshop will be fully integrated. Previously, these were two separate systems, where things had to be kept and added separately. None of that is needed anymore. Everything now works together, so making an adjustment somewhere is immediately live within all systems.” Stafa’s renewed focus on online selling channels and systems has coincided with a spike in online buying and selling, particularly whilst the world has been socially distancing to curb the spread of coronavirus. “Of course, all online traffic has increased enormously; this has also been in all newspapers,” says Ivo. “I think everyone has started to order a lot more online. But we think this applies mainly to B2C. We can see a small shift in this, in terms of B2B, but we also have a lot of customers who don't order through the webshop.” The new Kanban service will surely also be a core part of Stafa’s enhanced service offering, as well as a renewed concentration on industrial customers. The new systems are being placed with customers as this magazine goes to press.

Stafa is enhancing its internal logistics organisation to take full advantage of new software.

18 20-21 Territory_Focus_Benelux-STAFA_TOR45_July20_LAW.qxp 31/07/2020 12:35 Page 3

Pim picks up the story: “We have noticed for some time that our industry customers, on which we will focus more in the coming years, have a great need for solutions that guarantee continuity of their production in the field of fasteners and C-parts. “We have attracted a number of people with years of experience in this industry. Together with them, we have chosen to set up an innovative and state-of-the-art Kan-Ban system that is distinctive in the market. The technology we use include RFID and an online portal for our customer with intuitive user interface for controlling the entire process. Via RFID, orders are contactless and automatically activated without any effort. The online portal offers real-time data analysis, order overview, order status and stock management. With this Kan-Ban system we will really offer a comprehensive solution for our current and future customers.”

// We think we will emerge stronger from the crisis. We have learnt and adapted. // The Kanban launch, and the subsequent targeting of industrial customers, have meant that the environment and sustainability have become even more important. Joep explains: “Moving towards other industry sectors means Stafa also needs to be more critical on sustainability and the environmental matters. Of course we have always strived to be as open as possible about our supply chain and the risks involved it there are any. Our success as a business go hand-in-hand with environmental management, quality awareness and a sustainable and transparent supply chain. Stafa has set-up several policies, our own Code-of-Conduct to protect and adhere universal sustainability principles. We are also an active member of UN Global Compact. Stafa is constantly working to improve our processes ensuring quality and meeting customer requirements and international regulations.” Stafa is also working on broader internal infrastructure improvements: “We are currently working on improvements to our internal logistics organisation. The implementation of a warehouse management system requires that we work differently to take full advantage of the software's capabilities. The complete logistics hardware has also been renewed. We are also working on improvements in the area of health and safety of our employees. We create new internal workplaces with improved ergonomics and equipped with the new possibilities. Stafa is actually always working on improvements!” The restless firm concludes: “We have tried to improve various internal and external processes during a difficult and challenging time. We think we will emerge stronger from the crisis. We have learned and adapted. When these unforeseen situations arise, we should try to be flexible and keep developing. Stay enthusiastic and positive whatever the circumstances. Stagnation means decline.” www.stafa.nl

AN INNOVATIVE NEW SCREW FOR ROOFERS Four years in the making, Eurofast has developed an innovative screw for tapered insulation on concrete, set to make the lives of roofers easier. Eurofast fills us in on the details of their mechanical fixing development...

crew and fastener manufacturer Eurofast has introduced an adjustable screw. Although this new screw does not turn the entire industry upside down, it does show that even the smallest innovations (it is hardly visible to the naked eye) can provide a major advantage. So while you might think that every possible innovation for a screw has already been designed and produced, this is actually far from the case, says Eurofast. “The Eurofast Adjustable Screw (EAS) is combined with the Eurofast tube for an alternative to mechanically fixing roofing systems with tapered insulation on flat roofs with concrete surfaces,” explains Product & Marketing Manager Frank van Kalkeren. “Using the standard fasteners means that a different screw is required for each row. As a result, you need many different screw lengths – a puzzle that increases the chance of mistakes. In addition – and as every roofer will agree - the screws do not always grab into the concrete substructure and they have to be drilled again and deeper. “This leads to uncertainty about the calculation value, needed to keep the roofing membrane in place during windload, and loss of time. The roofer is also not always certain whether the screw is clamping the roofing membrane properly.

S

Eurofast’s clever EAS is already on the market in Benelux, Germany and the UK

22

“A few years ago, we thought we should be able to do that better and, above all, more efficiently.” Removing the uncertainty around fixing Eurofast tells Torque that it spent approximately four years developing the EAS, producing various prototypes: “We have tested a lot of other solutions and variations, prior to the finished application.” Frank van Kalkeren added: “We listened carefully to the market, to the objections to the usual mechanical fastening methods and we set a number of conditions that the new screw had to meet. For example, we wanted to offer the roofer certainty of a good fixation in the substrate and clamping of the roof covering. Moreover, it had to be possible to assemble with standard tools; basically just with a screw drill and a bit. Ultimately, this resulted in the EAS from our lab.” Steeper pitch The EAS, which is already on the market in Benelux, Germany and the UK, has a pitch that actually consists of two parts. The bottom of the pitch, the last 25 millimeters, is steeper than the top. As a result, the bottom is pulled into the concrete faster than

At the start of the project a pull-out test is performed to determine the quality of the concrete.

// A few years ago, we thought we should be able to do it better and, above all, more efficiently. //

the tube is pulled on. And the roofer can feel precisely when the bottom is in the concrete. As with the standard screws, the roofer must pre-drill. Then he presses the screw with the tube onto the roof covering and fastens the screw. The tube is pulled along and automatically clamps the roof covering. “The screw is also distinguished by the fact that it has a spring instead of a nut,” says van Kalkeren. The packaging features a useful QR code that links to an online manual – handy for a roofer who can check how it works on their smartphone on the spot. The most important thing is that the roofer has more control, can work faster and more efficiently and that the margin of error is minimised. The EAS has the similar coating to all Eurofast’s other roofing screws; Magni Silver. The coating resists the 15 cycli Kesternich test that’s needed, according the EAD-030351-00-0402 Systems of mechanically fastened flexible roof waterproofing sheets. With EAS, roofers need fewer different combinations of screws and tubes, so he or she can get more done, and faster. Eurofast has an extensive database of wind box tests with calculation values available and can even provide a laying plan if required. Making every effort to make things as easy as possible for roofers, Eurofast supplies boxes with colour codes for the right roof area. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the reaction to the launch has been positive, the firm tells Torque: “Roofers are enthusiastic. They like the easy application without any additional tools. We expect that more roofers will discover our solution soon.” www.eurofastgroup.com

NAILED ON FOR SUCCESS Due to celebrate its 100th birthday next year, Don Quichotte, also known as De Wit to its OEM and private label clients, has been keeping busy during the Covid-19 pandemic with new and revived projects. General Sales Manager Jan-Willem van der Wijngaart and Product Marketing Manager Naj van Galen give an overview of the latest from the company

riginally founded in 1921 as J.H. de Wit and Sons, the company is today split into two separate entities. The side of the company known as De Wit caters for the firm’s OEM, industrial and private label customers, while the other side, known as Don Quichotte, was originally the company brand, and serves customers which buy Don Quichotte branded products from the catalogue and stock. The companies currently employ 118 people. This move, which took place around six years ago, was to help customers better align with the company’s businesses, according to General Sales Manager Jan-Willem van der Wijngaart. “We did it so people could identify with us, but also these two types of customers need a totally separate approach,” he explains. Known mainly in the past for its offering to the nail market, including masonry nails, special nails, hardened steel nails and so on, the company has since branched out into several other sectors. “Nowadays, nails are only part of our complete business, although they remain an important part,” van der Wijngaart continues. “We have put more and more development into other directions over the last 5-10 years, and now we say we cover four areas: nails, hardware and ironmongery; electrical fixings; sanitary and plumbing; and general fixings and construction.” According to van der Wijngaart, the nails market is not such a growing market in recent years, with the invention and further development of other fixes such as shooting, gluing, screwing and so on. However, as one of the major European players in this sector, it is still an important part of both the Don Quichotte and De Wit sides of the business.

O

The firm is one of the major European players in the nail sector.

26

“Nails are still, and will still, always be there,” assures van der Wijngaart. “Regarding the market, volumes are not growing as such. We used to have many serious European competitors manufacturing in different countries, but nowadays there are few others. Although, new companies are starting to produce and there are lots of products coming from the Far East and China, so there isn’t a very clear picture how big the market is. “With our factory based in Holland, producing European quality products, we will always do nails as long as the market is there, and we are keeping our focus on it.” Naj van Galen, Product Marketing Manager, also sees the nail market as an important sector for Don Quichotte in particular. “Nails are a very big focus for Don Quichotte,” he adds. “Most of the revenue in the nail market we get from export, as well as selling our nails as a semi-finished product to other manufacturers who use our nails for their products, such as cable clips and pipe clips, or injection moulders.” With the local Benelux nail market being reasonably small, the international markets are particularly important to Don Quichotte, which exports nails to at least 65 countries around the world, alongside many of its other product offerings. “The Dutch market was very good before Covid-19,” says van der Wijngaart. “There were good rates of growth, a lot of construction projects underway, and a good price level. It’s a little early to get a real idea of how Covid impacted the market. Of course, it was a shock, but there wasn’t a complete lockdown like we saw in other countries, and construction and installation work still continued, although it slowed down.” Van Galen echoed this, adding: “Our main market is export, of course we do have customers in the Dutch market and there is a feeling that everything is loosening up now regarding the measures. “I don’t see any difficulties right now, but of course it is very unpredictable what will happen in the future if there are second waves.” Manufacturing from its factory in Helmond, the firm can source raw material from surrounding countries such as France, Belgium and Germany, enabling it to serve the market quickly when customers start placing orders again. During the height of the pandemic, van der Wijngaart and his

Don Quichotte has been developing a new unified packaging concept. team took the initiative to start several new projects, and revive some older ones, in order to keep busy while some countries closed their borders, resulting in sales personnel not being able to travel and visit customers. NEW PACKAGING CONCEPT One of the projects Don Quichotte continued during the pandemic was revamping packaging, boxes and labels. The basis of the concept is simple; nails, and nail-like products, will still be packed in full-colour Don Quichotte cartons. Electrical fixings, however, will be packed in white boxes with big, coloured ‘around-the-corner’ labels, so that the whole range will look more unified and coherent. Don Quichotte will also be able to print more product specific information on the label and make an efficiency improvement in packaging material needs. Next to this unified packaging concept, the company also added bag packaging to its range for small volumes of products in transparent bags specially for the retailer. These bags can be bought separate to, or in combination with a display.

// We will always do nails as long as the market is there, and we are keeping our focus on it. //

IN CONVERSATION WITH KOBOUT Kobout Director and Owner Joost Kunst and Purchase and Export Manager Jan-Arie de Jong give an overview of the opportunities and challenges faced by the supplier in the Benelux market…

How was the Netherlands fastener market performing prior to the Covid-19 pandemic? The Dutch market was a little slow, and for export very heavy, which saw a huge decrease. In the Dutch market all companies are open and there is enough demand. The first quarter prior to the pandemic was very good.

Aside from Covid, are there any upcoming challenges facing the Netherlands’ fastener market? What we see in the B2B market is actually more and more B2C demand. The key word is convenience and digital is often the answer. Due to this, we have several innovative ordering inline solutions.

What’s your view on the state of the market now? Completely different. A lot of companies are still very busy, but some companies are out of orders. Fortunately, the prices are very stable. Our government started some big projects earlier on in the year which have had some good impacts.

Does Kobout have any upcoming projects or significant developments currently underway? We are optimising our web portal in a continual process. To be able to search for what you need is very advanced, and our customers can now find important data and details in their personal dashboard, from which we have seen a substantial growth in user data. Our metal department, which we started a few years ago, is now a fast-growing department covering sawing, drilling, bending, tapping, assembling and so on. A few weeks ago, we bought a machine for thread-tapping up to M42. This, along with more than 40 years experience and knowledge from specialists, makes our metal department a successful combination. From what we can see, there are a lot of opportunities in the Dutch and European markets.

How was the support from the government for businesses during the lockdown in the Netherlands? The government is supporting companies with several financial programmes. However, happily, we don’t need to use these because our decrease in performance was so low.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT Torque catches up with Johannes Heye, Product Manager and Member of the Board of pgb-Europe, to see how the wholesaler fared during the Covid-19 pandemic and glean some insight into the state of the Benelux market.

ituated in the Belgian town of Melle, East Flanders, pgbEurope has seen a significant period of investment and growth over the last few years, including the introduction of a new 5,000 m2 fully automated warehouse and ERP system. The firm also overhauled its webshop and launched a new app, keeping Product Manager Johannes Heye and the rest of the pgb team busy. With the unprecedented effects of the Covid-19 pandemic affecting industries and supply chains around the globe, the European wholesaler is now looking ahead to what the future holds for the fastener sector. Heye answers Torque’s questions on the topic…

S

How was the Benelux fastener market performing prior to the lockdown? In the first two to five months of the year, we had a significant increase in our turnover, a sign that besides our own progression, the market was very alive. What’s your view on the state of the fastener market in the Benelux now? Now, it is starting to revive again. For pgb-Europe, with its main market in Belgium, the most problematic time was the first four weeks of the lockdown. Most of our sales go to retail and distributors, and those were mainly closed. In Holland, the sales were stable and even increasing because there the Government did not impose a full closing of the shops. In May, the Belgian shops opened again and orders came in very quickly. Concerning the direct industry, this is a different story where we feel that the big contract orders will stay out or get started up much more slowly. Do you think the pandemic has accelerated the shift to online business? For many years we have been pushing our customers towards our webshop. Two years ago, we made a complete revision of it, implementing many new features. This will never cease. Our digital platform is becoming more and more of an important business unit. So yes, during the pandemic we also advertised our 24/7 availability on the web. Our webshop is easily and always accessible, with accurate information on stock, price and technical data.

// Our digital platform is becoming more and more important. // Aside from Covid, are there any upcoming challenges facing the fastener market in the Benelux? There is a scale enlargement because of the bigger chains who buy independent business and, through this, are increasing their importance. Customers and their end-users expect a growing service and are demanding. Therefore, there is the constant need to improve our efficiency and processes. The digitalisation and automisation of standard processes is one of our key cornerstones at the moment. Examples of this include continuous investment in our own ERP and logistics software, our webshop with customised possibilities for our customers, system to system connections, and so on. This means that we also have to adapt our business model to keep track with this very fast evolution. Alongside this, we are continuing to improve our product range with new items and product assessments. By the end of the year, we will come out with an ETA on our pfs+ and Hapax wood screws. www.pgb-europe.com

parts utilised in the area of rails, such as washers, bolts or rail support plates, to ensure the long-term, safe function of the overall construction and avoid expensive downtime.

Extreme and varied stresses on components For all areas of rail infrastructure – whether rails, tunnels or bridges – safety and adhering to the highest quality standards are of elementary importance. It is therefore important for all steel parts utilised, depending on application and location – for example, salty air on the coast or damp tunnels – to be given enduringly effective protection against corrosion as well as against chemical and mechanical stresses. For example, the rail clamps used to secure the rails to the track require a high level of stone impact resistance in addition to high corrosion protection. At the same time, surface protection should enable the setting of individual coefficients of friction and good fastening properties. Tailored corrosion protection is also required for overhead lines and other steel

Capable, safe and long-lasting: zinc flake coatings Chromium(VI)-free zinc flake technology enables highperformance protection for rail fastening components, as well as overhead lines. Zinc flake systems deliver very high protective performance at low coat thicknesses of just 8–20 μm. The base coat consists of lamella-like zinc alloy particles embedded in a binder matrix, which cross-link on the component to generate corrosion protection. An additional top coat lends the coating extra functionalities such as defined coefficient of friction or chemical resistance, for example against aggressive cleaning agents. The individual coats are dried at low curing temperatures of max. 240°C. Depending on requirements, zinc flake systems offer active cathodic protection of 1,440 hours against base metal corrosion (red rust) in salt spray testing according to DIN EN ISO 9227. In the event of damage to the coating the ignoble zinc in the base coat sacrifices itself on contact with water and oxygen in favour of the more noble steel base material. An additional benefit is that no hydrogen is generated in the coating process. This means that there is no danger of hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking. For this reason, zinc flake coatings are especially suited to providing surface protection for high-tensile steel (> 1000 MPa).

urope is criss-crossed by a railway network of around 230,000 kilometres – 38,500 of which are located in Germany. Every single kilometre has to be continually maintained to enable long-term use, because damage results directly in the blocking of sections of the railway and therefore expensive disruptions to international freight and passenger transport. To guarantee the functionality of the steel parts used to secure the rails and overhead lines, each individual component needs to be equipped with effective surface protection. Zinc flake systems have proved to be long-lasting and economical solutions here.

TYPICAL REQUIREMENTS OF STEEL PARTS FOR FASTENING RAILS

The zinc flake system comprises two coats. The base coat provides the cathodic corrosion protection, whilst the matching top coat ensures multifunctional properties such as chemical resistance.

Longer maintenance intervals and higher economy efficiency The application of a suitable zinc flake system secures the long-term functionality of rail elements such as rail clamps as well as fastening elements such as sleeper screws and wedge lock washers. It reduces repair costs and extends maintenance intervals on the track. The result is lower maintenance costs with functional security of the parts fitted. Finally, the coating also offers an economical and constructively-beneficial alternative to the hot-dip galvanisation previously used in the area of overhead lines.

KEEPING SAFETY ON

TRACK Torqueing components correctly is vital to failure prevention in any industry, not least the rail industry where it could result in costly delays or, worse still, fatal accidents. With liability issues and accountability at stake, ensuring the correct installation and maintenance of tracks and equipment across the network is vital. Graham Hudson, Technical Support Engineer at Norbar Torque Tools, discusses how the latest innovations with torque tools can aid with safe installation and auditing for the rail sector. s a sector relied on by so many to transport themselves or goods, the rail industry requires a well-constructed and maintained network of tracks to keep trains running efficiently. There are a multitude of aspects that must be confirmed to guarantee the quality and safety of the tracks themselves, however, a key part of this is the correct tightening of bolts.

A

Torqueing properly When it comes to the construction, chair bolts that fasten continuously welded rails to the sleepers must be torqued to the correct value across the entire network. By correctly tightening the bolts and ensuring the integrity of joints, the rails should be able to withstand the exertion of multiple trains passing over at high speed. Any damage to the bolts or the rail

Consistent torque levels are key to quality and safety – and trains running efficiently

Accurate data collection during construction and maintenance provides a vital audit trail

through the application of an incorrect torque could lead to serious safety issues. If the bolts are under-torqued, vibrations across the rails as trains pass over could loosen bolts. Equally, overtightening of a bolt could lead to distortion of the track, or damage to the bolt itself. For example, bolts have an elasticity which enables them to naturally stretch as they are tightened. However, overtightening can result in a bolt leaving its elastic state and entering an overstretched plastic state, which can result in fatigue over time. As heavy trains pass over these overtightened bolts at high speed, this fatigue can lead to bolt failure.

// Overtightening can result in a bolt leaving its elastic state and entering an overstretched plastic state. //

Keeping track of data Ensuring that bolts are correctly torqued during construction and maintenance is vital for guaranteeing the integrity of the rail network. When liability and accountability is potentially an issue, it is vital that an audit trail is collected during installation or maintenance. By using technology built into the torque tool to collect data of each individually tightened bolt across the rail network it is now possible to log the exact location and maintain a clear installation and maintenance audit trail. Tools such as the EvoTorque® Tools from Norbar have the functionality not only to log up to 3,000 time and date stamped torque readings, but also who carried out the work and in which location. Once work is completed, this data can be downloaded and stored to EvoLog, a dedicated software platform, via USB or Bluetooth 4.0 transfer. Crucially, these tools also have the capability to track calibration data to ensure the tool is always compliant with ISO standards. With this data, those working on the rail network, such as contractors, have the evidence to prove that their work has been carried out properly with tools correctly calibrated for the job. What’s more, the EvoTorque® Audit mode allows bolts to be checked and, with this data collection and location capability, contractors can identify bolting ‘hotspots’ where persistent problems occur. Armed with information, extra preventative measures or maintenance procedures to ensure the integrity of the track in those weaker points can be implemented. VISIBILITY AND AGILITY IN THE RAIL SUPPLY CHAIN the focus on speed and agility in the supply chain continues unabated, with one major rail manufacturer – possibly soon to become even bigger – applying the latest in supply chain visibility tech to its €8 billion business. ransport and equipment services provider Alstom has signed a deal to use a supply chain analysis solution across 30 of its worldwide locations. Kinaxis RapidResponse will help Alstom gain visibility and agility for its train manufacturing supply chain planning activities. Using RapidResponse, Alstom is able to simulate planning scenarios alongside business constraints to ensure every train manufacturing project is planned in an optimal way. The company is now looking to extend its end-to-end supply chain visibility to external suppliers. Building on a partnership approach, Alstom has rolled out the Kinaxis RapidResponse applications across 25 locations worldwide. With a renewed agreement, Alstom will expand its use of RapidResponse and concurrent planning to a further five locations, bringing the total number of users to more than 500 globally. “Six years ago our goal was to find a solution that would enable us to ensure that every train manufacturing project we undertook would be planned in an optimal way,” says Medhy Laiseau, Material Planning & Supplier Relationship Director, Alstom. “In Kinaxis we have found a planning solution that has become our standard across our train manufacturing sites.” Kinaxis said it combines human intelligence with AI and concurrent planning to help companies plan for any future, monitor risks and opportunities and respond at the pace of change. Powered by a cloud-based platform, Kinaxis delivers industry-proven applications so everyone can “know sooner, act faster and remove waste”.

Using the Kinaxis solution, Alstom simulates a wide range of planning scenarios alongside its business and operational constraints. This helps make certain that the company can plan its train manufacturing activities in the best and most efficient manner possible. Alstom is now evaluating how it could extend its end-to-end supply chain visibility to external suppliers. “We are thrilled that Alstom has continued to expand its relationship with Kinaxis over the years and use our concurrent planning capability to help better manage its integrated business and supply chain planning agility and visibility,” says John Sicard, CEO, Kinaxis. “In these difficult times in particular, being hyper agile is critical in order to absorb daily disruption and uncertainty, and to be able to obtain immediate insight on business risks and opportunities. That’s exactly what our solutions are enabling Alstom to achieve.” Automation, digitisation and make-to-order configurations can bring big benefits to industrial manufacturers, but also introduces complexity in the supply chain. Kinaxis helps these companies unify supply chain planning to streamline processes, break down silos, more accurately forecast and plan concurrently across every area of the supply chain to drive maximum flexibility and faster decision-making. Alstom recently agreed to fast-track a hydrogen train development project with Eversholt Rail in the UK (according to Railway Technology). The Alstom has 60 global locations, employs 38,900 people and saw €8.2 billion sales in 2019/2020. As this magazine goes to press, Alstom is awaiting confirmation it will be allowed to acquire Bombardier. www.alstom.com

BERLIN’S INNOTRANS DELAYED TO APRIL ail delays are rarely welcome, but punters have been positive about Innotrans’ unavoidable postponement due to Covid-19. Originally scheduled for September 2020, Innotrans is now due to arrive 27-30 April 2021. ”All in all we are delighted that the majority of exhibitors welcome the move to April 2021 and that they can make use of this traditional marketing platform for a restart after the coronavirus,” Kerstin Schulz, the director of InnoTrans. “It was clear from the outset that due to the coronavirus crisis and its impact some companies within the industry would be unable to take part in April 2021. That is a great pity for those concerned and we are offering support wherever we can. That said, we are all the more delighted that current bookings have reached InnoTrans 2018 levels. It shows the industry is united and working at full speed to be at InnoTrans next April.” Dr. Ben Möbius, general manager of the German Railway Industry Association (VDB), was of a similar mind: “The decision to postpone InnoTrans hurt, but was absolutely correct and sent two clear messages. Firstly, protecting public health has top priority. Secondly, this leading international trade fair offers a chance to restart business. Together with global partners our

pex Stainless Fasteners celebrates its Diamond anniversary in 2021 and in those three decades the company has experienced both smooth and rough times, not least the recent Covid-19 pandemic. The business has also been subject to the many challenges and external factors that are specific to stainless steel, particularly great volatility in raw material prices. Stocking a wide range coupled with a significant depth of stock has been one of Apex Stainless Fasteners’ core strategies in catering to the specific needs of the market. The company now holds over 20,000 product lines, focusing on supplying the Fastener Distribution Market with competitive pricing and good service. So broad is that stock holding that Apex Stainless Fasteners believes its product range is among the widest of any European stainless-steel wholesaler, with imperial and unified threaded parts stocked in addition to metric items. The aim is to provide a next day ex-stock delivery service in the UK to meet customer demand. With several warehouses in the UK Apex has expanded to more than 10,000 m² of storage purely for finished product, stockholding and distribution, with significant investment in inventories. Through this Branch structure Apex offers local delivery services. With many of the sales, administration and warehouse staff having been with the business for many years, the organisation retains a wealth of experience and expertise. A significant manufacturing presence, primarily used for special or bespoke products, complements the wholesale side of the business. “We are always looking at how best to support our customers in a constantly changing environment,” Lawrence Waller informs Torque. “The marketplace always has changing demands, and this recently led to the introduction of BUMAX to our product portfolio.”

A

// The smooth operational processing and despatching of orders remains an absolute priority. //

Bring on Bumax Apex introduced BUMAX into its range at the start of this year, further developing its “one-stop-shop” status with the established brand and enhancing ex stock availability of higher strength stainless fasteners. With a proven track record of optimal safety and reliability in demanding applications, BUMAX has now become a significant addition to the range. The initial range of the BUMAX 88 Socket Caps (ISO 4762) starting from M3 diameter and going up to M20 as standard has been extended with a stock holding of BUMAX 88 Socket Countersunk Screws (ISO 10642), and further product groups will follow. Currently on non-stock BUMAX parts Apex offers a quick turnaround service for customers in both BUMAX 88 and BUMAX 109, covering Hexagon Full Nuts (ISO 4032), Flat Washers (ISO 7089), Socket Head Cap Screws (ISO 4762) and Socket Countersunk Screws (ISO 10642). Smooth Operators With the ongoing challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and the changing demands of the market Apex has implemented measures to ensure there will be minimal disruption to its first-rate service levels, even with the future vagaries of Brexit finalisation still to come. Waller further states: “Apex has put procedures in place to ensure that the high level of service which our customers are now accustomed to will continue unhindered during these uncertain times. The smooth operational processing and despatching of customer orders for next day delivery to the UK remains an absolute priority and will continue to be so.” www.apexstainless.com

TOOLS MADE IN GERMANY KNIPEX

MORE COMPACT, MORE VERSATILE

Tubix

Knipex has launched its new innovations for 2020. Torque speaks with UK Marketing Manager David Barnes about the hand tools market and the launch of its new products. PreciStrip16 ounded in 1882, Knipex is one of the world’s oldest brands of pliers. Based in Wuppertal, Germany, Knipex was founded in 1882 and boasts a global distribution network that sees its tools in the hands of professionals in 100 countries. The family business has seen plenty of trends, peaks and troughs in the 138 since it started out and 2020 is all about compact and versatile products, says UK Marketing Manager David Barnes. “We are seeing a trend towards more compact tools and multiple features on one tool, which is something Knipex has always excelled at. Those trends are reflected in our new products for 2020. “Take the Cobra® XS, for example, the smallest water pump pliers in the world with full functional capability measuring just 100 mm long. The tool can adapt to eleven adjustment positions and grip nuts up to 24 mm in width. They also look great! Tools like these are becoming more sought after as professionals look for improved ease of use and functionality.” Despite all the challenges of this year, Knipex didn’t opt to hold back on its product launches. “Knipex has experienced challenges like most manufacturers,” explained Barnes, “but we have pushed on and launched our new innovations for 2020, and we have also continued to support our end users as well as our distributors. The new products have been really well received, especially because they look set to save professionals time and effort. There are challenges, but Knipex is well positioned to make 2020 a successful year.” Knipex backs product launches with guidance for merchants and distributors on how to get hold of product information and details on how to source marketing materials and new products. Knipex provides eye-catching point of sale and marketing materials with solutions designed to help boost sales with glass display cases, illuminated boxes and accessories such as shelf stoppers, perforated panel hooks, secondary stands and displays. Knipex’s latest product launches (see right), are produced exclusively in Germany, using ecological and social sustainable methods. Barnes says: “From forging the plier blanks to packaging, our factory in Wuppertal provides a complete service. We develop and build a lot of our machines and plants ourselves, which ensures we are in full control of the quality processes and our future innovations too. “Like all modern manufacturers, the Knipex factory in Wuppertal, Germany, has automation but it is always combined with human knowledge and craftsmanship when we produce our tools. We like to say that here are 130 years of experience in every set of Knipex pliers!”

KNIPEX’S NEW PRODUCTS // We are seeing a trend towards more compact tools and multiple features on one tool, which is something Knipex has always excelled at. //

Knipex UK Marketing Manager David Barnes takes us through some of the latest tools from the Wuppertal manufacturer: “We have launched a selection of tools that have unique features designed to save time, effort and cost for professionals. “The TubiX® pipe cutter makes it easy to cut pipes up to 35 mm in diameter and with a wall thickness of 2 mm accurately – with just one hand thanks to the QuickLock quick adjustment guide. It locks the tool onto the pipe, then accurately positions the cutting wheel for different pipe diameters. “The PreciStrip16 is an advanced cable stripper that enables fine, flexible and solid cables to be stripped quickly and precisely. The capacity range extends from 0.08 to 16 mm². The pliers can be easily adjusted with a dial for special materials or temperature requirements. Exact stripping of insulation is guaranteed with the parabolic stripping blades, while semi-circular metal holding clamps ensure a perfect grip. “The new 300 mm Pliers Wrench can now grip width across flats up to a diameter of 68 mm (2 1/2”) thanks to two additional adjustment positions. It rounds off the range of six pliers wrenches (125, 150, 180, 250, 300 and 400mm). “We have also launched a chrome plated version of our Self-Adjusting Crimping Pliers. With a narrow handle width and improved ergonomics the pliers are ideal for crimping wire end sleeves. The pliers self-adjust to the size of wire end sleeves required and are perfect for repetitive, high crimping quality due to its integral lock with a self-releasing mechanism. “The 160mm CoBolt® S with 25-fold amplification of manual force is now available with a recess on the cutting edge, so the popular compact bolt cutter can cut through round materials even more effectively. “The Cobra XS is a very cool tool and the smallest high-tech water pump pliers in the world with full functional capability at just 100mm long!”

TOOLS MADE IN GERMANY GEDORE TORQUE SOLUTIONS

SAFE, TRACEABLE, POWERFUL AND CORDLESS Gedore Torque Solutions’ new lightweight LDA/LDW torque wrench can produce torque up to 6,000 Nm and store documentation for over 10,000 bolted connections…

EDORE Torque Solutions GmbH has produced an even safer and more intelligent cordless torque wrench. The high torque wrench technology specialist, headquartered in Vaihingen/Enz, has used lightweight high-performance aluminium for its new LDA/LAW Solution cordless torque wrenches. Depending on the version, straight or angled, the basic model has a torque range from 90 to 6,000 Nm. The torque is easily adjusted, while the efficient and fast brushless motor with 2speed transmission and a powerful 18-volt lithium-ion battery provides powerful drive. The battery operates at a constant peak performance until it is completely discharged.

G

The LDA/LAW features a sunlight-readable display that visualises the workflow.

Workflow For maximum precision, the LDA/LAW Solution offers an optical visualisation: a sunlight-readable, digital colour display which visualises the entire workflow. It can also be optionally equipped with a documentation module for quality assurance. The pre-defining of different bolting operations is also possible with the DOCU module. With the torque rotation angle process, perfectly defined bolted connections performed to highest quality standards are guaranteed, says Gedore. Traceability With the TRACK module, bolt operations can be traced. During the bolting process the data is documented and then exported to a PC. From there, a bolting protocol can be created and archived. This reliably documents that all bolt connections have been tightened with the specified settings, while the encrypted log file ensures that manipulation of the documentation data is impossible. The TRACK and QS modules enable the documentation of more than 10,000 bolted connections and serve for quality assurance and archiving of completed bolting work. The TRACK/QS modules can be switched on and off as required. Marco Bruhns, Site Manager GEDORE Torque Solutions, says: “The data transfer of all bolt operations via USB interface at the end of the working day is flawless and complete with these products.”

TOOLS MADE IN GERMANY CAS

HOW THE CORDLESS ALLIANCE SYSTEM PROJECT IS BRINGING CHANGE TO THE POWER TOOL INDUSTRY Spearheaded by Germany-headquartered Metabo, the Cordless Alliance System (CAS) is a cross-manufacturer battery pack system, designed to benefit not just pro users, but also specialist dealers, CAS partners and Metabo…

he carpenter may swear by the Mafell plunge saw, the plumber by the Rothenberger tube press, the stainlesssteel expert by the grinder from Eisenblätter. And all three may also use a Metabo drill screwdriver - with rechargeable battery, and with the same 18-volt battery pack. Tradespeople and contractors seldom use just one brand of tool, which has not been a problem until the age of cordless tools. Using and carrying multiple battery chargers and battery packs as well as the tools themselves is a relatively new and unwelcome extra burden for tradespeople, as well as for specialist dealers. Other industries have been fast to get their act together, with the ubiquitous USB charger or the electric car sector. For the power tool industry, the cross-manufacturer battery pack system, the Cordless Alliance System (CAS) is unique.

T

Freedom and flexibility Metabo managing director Horst W Garbrecht has called the CAS system a fourfold “win” situation, because “our CAS partners, the specialist trade, the users and Metabo all benefit equally from the cooperation”. For users, the advantages are obvious: a mobile cordless device with which craftsmen can work flexibly on the construction site and in the workshop, and a battery pack that is also compatible with machines from other manufacturers and their chargers. “Metabo has gained partners through CAS who are absolute specialists in very different trades,” says Garbrecht. In addition to Metabo, Mafell, Rothenberger and Eisenblätter, a further thirteen partners were part of CAS at its 2018 launch, including the stirrer from the painter specialist Collomix, the plaster processing machine from Eibenstock, the vaccum cleaner from Starmix, the hot air devices from Steinel, the concrete shaker from Rokamat or the cordless nailer from Prebena – all these devices run with the high-performance cordless technology from Nürtingen and are 100% compatible with one battery pack. In total, more than 160 machines were part of the CAS network at launch, from various brands and all requiring just one battery pack and one charger. “All in all, professionals need fewer battery packs

48

torque-expo.com

All for one: Brand CEOs were on hand for the launch of CAS in 2018

and can make maximum use of them,” says Garbrecht. “The market is dominated by competition between systems. On many construction sites and in workshops there is still a chaos of batteries and chargers from different manufacturers. CAS is supposed to change that.” Full power from Nürtingen Metabo is at the cutting edge of power tool battery tech and CAS partners benefit from the Swabian company’s technical prowess. Thomas Zeller, head of the CAS partner programme, says: “Many of the smaller companies simply do not have the necessary resources to develop their own battery pack technology. Zeller and his “CAS Task Force” team from product management, development, marketing and sales, is in close contact with the colleagues from the partner companies. They regularly meet to exchange product news, latest trends and activities. “Our experience in motor and drive technology is also helpful for some of the partners. This enables us to advise our partners when questions arise during their development process.”

48-49 Made_In_Germany_CAS_TOR45_July20_LAW.qxp 31/07/2020 12:52 Page 2

Taking two or more battery chargers into the workplace? Then the universal battery principle from CAS will no doubt appeal and lighten the load

Power to the workers: CAS was dubbed “the battery pack for everyone”

CAS has picked up a number of new partners since its launch two years ago, with ongoing talks with new partners. Zeller says: “First, we compare whether the requirements of the potential partner match ours. After all, there are certain framework conditions that have to be fulfilled in order for a CAS partnership to come about at all.” “To become part of CAS, the machines of potential partners must meet the high demands of professional users,” says Zeller. Another point is sales: Metabo sells its range through specialist dealers. Although this is not absolutely necessary for potential partners, the sales structures must at least fit together so that compatible products are also available where they are needed, says Zeller. Partners deliberately opt for CAS – and against other systems, of which there are many in the industry. “We receive positive feedback from our specialist trade partners. CAS is an opportunity for them to differentiate themselves from their competitors.”

Tech giants: Smaller brands have been able to benefit from Metabo’s considerable battery tech might

Mutual growth “Regular contact with each other is an important criterion, because only in this way can we make progress as a partnership,” says Zeller. Progress is the keyword for CAS. Horst W Garbrecht adds: “We are open to other manufacturers and brands. In this respect, CAS is implementing a trend in our industry that is also becoming increasingly effective in completely different areas. Today, cooperation between competitors is the order of the day for many challenges in order to solve them as user-friendly as possible for the benefit of our customers.” Overlaps within the product range do not necessarily preclude partnerships, either, the Metabo boss concludes: “If a specialist supplier knocks on our door today with a tool that we may also have in stock, then he is still welcome. Because we win many users for our system who rely on the same special product. CAS will be the battery pack system for trade and industry – the battery pack for everyone, so to speak.” www.cordless-alliance-system.com

TORQUE FOCUS NUTS, WASHERS + LOCKING SYSTEMS

INVESTMENT, INNOVATION AND ISO STANDARDS Hayley Everett roots out the latest news and product innovations from across the nuts, washers and locking systems sector… R + FK SCHULTE R + FK Schulte (rfks) is a family-owned washer and stamping parts manufacturer, taking on the challenge of becoming a ‘one-stop-shop’ for both standard and special washers. The firm is looking to utilise its ability to produce stamping parts quickly and cost-effectively, branded with ‘Made in Germany’ quality. According to rfks, its capability to offer such a wide range of standard and special washers is down to three important elements: the tools, the machines and the employees. The company’s machining capabilities enable rfks to produce washers with a thickness from 0.05mm up to 12mm. The firm has showcased its competence in producing stamping parts through its investment in a new 800 tonne stamping machine, which enables rfks to be more productive and improve cost-efficiency for larger washers. rfks not only works closely with customers on designing new parts to drawings, but also looks at their applications to create ideas around substituting turned or hot forged parts into stamped parts. Through this, the firm offers its customers significant cost savings whilst still providing a quality product.

ND INDUSTRIES

Plettenburg-based fastener manufacturer Güde manufactures billions of safety washers every year, in part due to its 10,000 square metre built-up area and 5,000 continually available storage spaces. The manufacturer believes specific packing and labelling to be its key strengths. DIN 6905 spring lock washers for screw and washer assemblies are well-known in the screw manufacturing sector. Now, Güde is going one step further to present the sperrkant spring washer for captive screws. The sperrkant spring washer conserves more than 80% of essential pre-load in spite of heavy dynamic strain, while the locking edges on the surface prevent self-acting rotation movements.

ND Industries’ Epoxy-Lock is a process in which a two-part epoxy system is applied to male or female threaded fasteners of all sizes and configurations, creating powerful self-locking and self-sealing fasteners. Epoxy-Lock processing is compatible with a wide range of material types and finishes including wood, ceramic, many plastics and more. Fasteners are coated at ND Industries with two separate strips of epoxy resin and hardener beneath a protective skin that allows the fastener to stay dry to the touch. The materials remain inert until assembled to a mating part, at which time the force of engagement crushes the surface skin, mixing the two epoxy components. This initiates a chemical reaction which locks the parts together. Within minutes after assembly, the epoxy forms a bond between surfaces which can only be broken with a wrench. After 12 hours, it outperforms most locking elements in firstoff torque, and after 24 hours the epoxy has achieved up to 80% of its cure, which continues for up to 72 hours. Extensive testing by ND Industries has indicated that Epoxy-Lock processed fasteners provide two to four times greater breakaway torque than conventional plastic fastener locking devices. Oil, gasoline, salt spray, acids, solvents, water and air have virtually no effect on the epoxy used in the Epoxy-Lock processing after a final cure has been achieved, the firm said. The Epoxy-Lock process is compatible with a wide range of materials including plastics, ceramic, wood and most metal finishes.

ZAGO ZAGO sealing nuts are configured to bond with a rubber element, such as Silicone, Fluoro-silicone, Buna-N or Viton, that when tightened to the required torque value, squeezes outwardly and upon metalto-metal contact provides a 360 degree air-tight seal inside the thread as well as the circumference of the nut. This hermetic seal prevents airflow leakage, such as between pipe fittings or in a pneumatic pump, while blocking contaminants, like dust, moisture, oil, liquids, and gas, from entering and damaging high-asset equipment, or leaking into and harming the environment. These small components are tough enough to withstand extreme pressure, temperature and weather conditions, resist vibration and reduce noise. ZAGO one-unit sealing nuts, available in hex, hex flange, acorn nut, and large pipe threading sealing nuts, are reusable and eliminate the need for sealing washers. They protect and prolong the lifespan of industrial machinery, factory automation equipment, power tools, hydraulic control systems and pressure valves. ZAGO offers metric, inches and pipe threading options for nuts in a variety of materials, like steel, stainless steel, titanium, aluminium and copper, as well as rubber elements that meet Military Spec AS568. Food and medical-grade compliant rubber and DFARS parts are available upon request, and customers can build standard or custom ZAGO sealing nuts via the website. www.zago.com

According to Owlett-Jaton, Philidas offers unique solutions to the nut sector, with several products worth highlighting. The Philidas Turret Nut, originally designed for the aircraft industry, is available for commercial use and is often used within the rail industry. The locking function is located in the turret (collared) section of the nut, which has two slots one above the other, designed to de-pitch the bolt threads. This is in order to provide lower prevailing torque and higher reusability than the Philidas Industrial type. The Philidas Industrial Nut is an all-metal hexagon nut designed to have a friction grip between the nut and bolt threads. The most versatile self-locking nut in the Philidas range, it is a popular choice for several industrial applications, including rail network maintenance and automotive. Philidas Industrial Locknuts are an all-metal, one-piece nut with a collar hosted above the hexagon. It has two slots in the same plane cut in the collar and the metal around the slots is set to de-pitch the threads. The nut is suitable for use in high or low temperatures and is unaffected by oil, petrol and other liquids or vapours. A low prevailing torque can be applied on multiple occasions before it is no longer reusable. The Philidas MKV Nut is an all-metal self-locking nut which is most suited to high volume applications. This product is manufactured in steel Grade eight, 10 and 12 from M4 to M36. Sizes up to M16 can be cold-formed or bar-turned dependent on quantity and size. The MKV Nut has a relatively high prevailing torque which is obtained by two-point deforming for consistent characteristics across load-bearing threads, and can be reused.

HEICO

One of the main failure types with bolted joint connections is selfloosening during the operation of machinery and equipment. Extreme vibration or severe dynamic loads lead to transverse movement within bolted joints, with this movement providing one of the main causes of self-loosening. There are a wide variety of bolt locking devices on the market, however not all of them meet the basic requirement of reliably preventing bolted joints from selfloosening, which is where the HEICO-LOCK Wedge Locking System comes into play. The system, which meets DIN 65151, DIN 25201-4, and NASM 1312-7 standards, provides maximum reliability while under extremes of vibration or dynamic loads. In the same vein, the self-loosening of bolted joints themselves is one of the most commonly occurring failure modes in the operation of machines and systems. HEICOLOCK Wedge Lock Washers prevent loosening of the bolted joint by providing a safe and reliable bolt securing system during extreme vibration or dynamic loads. Meanwhile, HEICO-LOCK Ring Lock Washers provide high-quality, userfriendly bolt securing for the most

demanding of applications and are ideal for repeated use. The ring locking system guarantees that the two wedge lock washers are always fastened in the correct position with the wedgeshaped cams on the inside and the radial teeth on the outside. This means that the bolt locking system is easy and safe to install, even for non-specialist users. The manufacturer also offers a wedge lock nut solution, the HEICO-LOCK Wedge Lock Nut; a re-usable one-piece design that delivers high quality, user-friendly bolt security without the need for separate fasteners. The captive and rotary combination of the nut and washer makes securing the bolted joint more efficient and effective even under the most extreme vibration and dynamic loads. To round off the HEICO-LOCK range are the Combi Washers, a highly efficient combined securing system for highly loaded bolt connections. HECIO LOCK Combi-Washers enable quick and easy assembly, especially in difficult installation situations, in combination with all commercially available bolts, quickly and easily.

DIY and power tools boom, but for how long? As the dust settles on H1 2020, we sift through the data on DIY and tools ranges...

t’s hard to accurately predict how the rest of 2020 trading will pan out in these exceptionally unusual circumstances, but we do now have plenty of evidence that DIY – a sector that on the face of it had been slightly beleaguered (see the ‘Bunnings in the UK’ saga for more on that) – enjoyed a boom in a number of territories during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Fastener distributors and merchants with a DIY offering appear to have made some wins in Q2. BS Fixings found both its range and expertise in demand (see right). Meanwhile online DIY, home improvement and gardening marketplace manomano saw power tools up an astounding 244%. The Office of National Statistics noted a 42% increase in sales volumes for “hardware, paints and glass stores” in May 2020. Pre-lockdown, when the severity of the Covid-19 situation was becoming clearer, concerns were raised (by BHETA, among others) that there may be disruption and potential DIY product and tool supply shortages due to factory shutdowns. Which is another factor for the sector to weigh up, alongside the longevity of this DIY boost. 27% of the UK population reckon they will spend less in the DIY and home management sector once lockdown is over (so says Rare Consulting). That represents a challenge for suppliers and stockists deciding whether to invest in DIY-friendly ranges in the near future.

DIY HELP FROM BS FIXINGS “We have seen an increase in our DIY focused products over the past couple of months. When the lockdown was announced in March we closed the online shop for a month as we wanted to stick to government guidelines as much as possible by having no workforce, even production staff, in the warehouse and offices. “During this time spent at home in lockdown, we realised that it was an ideal time for some homeimprovement. At BS Fixings we offer various DIY and home-improvement products such as silicones & adhesives, tools, nails/ screws, etc, perfect for those jobs around the house that have needed sorting for a while. It was shame that we had to close at a time when our products could have been in high demand, but of course the health and safety of our staff was a priority. As lockdown measures eased we decided to open back up with a skeleton workforce to allow customers to place orders online.

“We found that sales for our DIY range were higher than usual and have continued to increase over the past few weeks. We were receiving many DIY-based enquiries such as ‘I am fixing a shelf in my wardrobe, please recommend the best screw to use’. Fortunately as we have over 20 years’ experience in this industry we can advise our customers on the best solutions for their home DIY. “We decided that this was a good time to increase our product range for DIY products. Examples of products that we have added to the website recently include bathroom and kitchen sealant, more colours and sizes of wood filler, and we are hoping to expand our range of nail sizes. “We are keeping in mind that as more people return back to work and normality, the demand for DIY products may decrease as people will have less time for home DIY. We are continuing to work hard in the hope that our sales won’t drop in the coming months and hopefully we can continue to grow our customer base, grow our product range and provide even more products to suit our customers’ requirements.” bsfixings.uk

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION DESIGN SOFTWARE ADVANCES

Porthouse Antwerp

SOFTWARE FOR BETTER BUILDING Bringing greater efficiency to construction and pulling together the diverse skills needed before anyone even sets foot on site is a complex but perhaps no longer unattainable target, says SCIA

oftware has long been a vital part of the construction process, not least with anchor calculation software and Building Information Modelling (BIM). SCIA, a specialist structural design and analysis software developer, has devised SCIA Autoconverter, which is set to boost collaboration between construction disciplines in order to pave the way for more efficient construction and the engineering workflow. SCIA aims to help cooperation between architects, modellers, structural engineers, draughtsmen and others, with Autoconverter. In particular, structural engineers have stood on the side from the practical BIM workflow, says SCIA, often having to recreate models, losing hours and days on tedious repetitive tasks. “BIM is becoming a more important process for the engineering world,” said SCIA CEO Hilde Sevens. “SCIA has always been a frontrunner in BIM and today with the SCIA AutoConverter we are taking the next big step. We are very proud to be the first to deliver an OpenBIM solution for structural engineers. Get ready for a change, because the engineers will now be able to get fully integrated into the BIM workflow and save tremendous time, free from product dependency.” SCIA says AutoConverter is a fast, accurate and reliable tool which enables structural engineers to convert structural models from any 3D structural software to create high quality and accurate analysis models offering >

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION ETA AND ACCREDITATIONS

CONSTRUCTION AND

COMPLIANCE For when nothing but a European Technical Assessment (ETA) product will do…

Peace of mind with JCP’s ETA approved fixings range Whilst applying for a European Technical Assessment (ETA) is a voluntary practice, as a leading specialist construction fixings supplier, JCP deems this complicated, time-consuming and costly process essential. This certification demonstrates that the fixing has been rigorously tested, confirms its quality and provides reassurance that it will meet or surpass market expectations. To meet the demanding needs of the construction industry, JCP’s products are subject to this independent performance assessment to allow for the addition of a CE mark. With recent changes in regulations and increased awareness regarding the impact of fire on fixings, an ETA can assist in the selection of the correct fixing for the application. It will also help to provide grounds when deciding whether or not the product is to be used on construction projects, both big and small. JCP has been committed to obtaining ETAs for over 25 of its structural ranges (over 200 lines) and supplies a wide variety of approved products from chemical anchors to metal fixings. THE RANGE INCLUDES > • Throughbolts – (Options 1 and 7) • Ankerbolts – (Option 1) • Drop-in Anchors – (ETAG 00-06) • Heavy Duty Anchors (Option 1) • Chemical Anchors – (Options 1 and 7)

58

torque-expo.com

Even though ETAs come with several options, the market has deferred to mainly offer option 1 (covers both cracked and non-cracked concrete) or option 7 (assessed using noncracked concrete). Whilst two different products can have an ETA option 1, users cannot presume they will offer the same load-bearing. With this in mind, JCP ensures all of their ETA data sheets and Declarations of Performance are available to download from their website and further supported by their Anchor Calculation Program. With plans to extend the product ranges included within their existing ETAs, JCP hopes to offer a wider choice of approved products. They are currently working with the BRE (Building Research Establishment) and other fire research institutes to obtain fire resistance characteristics and loadings in fire for products which could be used as secondary non-structural elements. www.jcpfixings.co.uk

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION WORKWEAR > GLOVES

HAVING THE RIGHT PROTECTION TO HAND With healthy hands considered by many to be a tradeperson’s most important tool, Torque rounds up the latest innovations in the workwear gloves sector with help from Brighton Best, Portwest and Snickers Workwear.

BRIGHTON BEST INTERNATIONAL As we emerge from the Covid-19 restrictions, 42% of UK consumers believe the way we shop will change, with more people saying they will pay more for local products, from local businesses. Despite the recent restrictions, the UK retail sector has seen a slight increase in sales for May, with DIY, Gardening, Hardware, Electrical Goods and Homewares sectors contributing through a mixture of online shopping and local buying. With PPE now more prevalent than ever, Brighton Best International UK (BBI) is now focusing heavily on glove use in cooperation with its new and existing customers. Right now, hand protection could not be more pertinent across all working environments. Although BBI has been selling its Ironclad and Kong brand gloves for a little over a year, it is yet to push the full range into all markets. Over the coming year BBI plans on introducing more of its core styles, including the Command Touchscreen Knit Range, Low Profile Impact, Grip and Leather Gloves. The firm will also roll out its more general utility and handling gloves alongside some new impact styles, and will have a new range of Retail Knit Gloves coming later this year. Each of the ranges will be stocked at BBI’s warehouse in Cradley Heath, while full product specifications can be found on the Ironclad.com website. sales@brightonbest.org

FROM THE

PRODUCTION LINE TO THE BUILDING SITE The construction site is changing, with implications for product suppliers and the supply chain…

ust in Time (JIT), traceability and zero defects are concepts familiar to production lines the world over and there have been no shortage of attempts to bring those learnings and concepts to other settings, including the building and construction site. Hilti is among those making headway. Earlier this year, the firm unveiled its smart traceable fasteners for construction sites. Using digital documentation, every smart fastener is uniquely identifiable and traceable, allowing users to scan a code with a smartphone and view the installed fastener details, certifications, inspection documents and more. If “connected anchors” all sounds a bit cutting edge, then it is worth bearing in mind that Hilti is not alone in working towards the goal of making construction projects more closely resemble advanced production lines.

Construction transformation Coventry’s Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) has begun work on a newly-awarded project which aims to transform how domestic buildings are designed, manufactured, and delivered in the UK.

62

torque-expo.com

The project – IGNITE – is part of a suite of key projects awarded to the MTC, which are part of the Transforming Construction sector deal initiative, funded through Innovate UK. IGNITE will create digital tools to support the transformation of the construction domestic supply chain. It is led by Places for People Group with consortium members LYNQ Ltd, Totally Modular Ltd, Northmill Associates Ltd, ModularWise Ltd and Project Etopia UK Ltd. Project delivery starts July 2020 for delivery in April 2022. “The overall aim of the project is to develop an end-to-end digital platform which integrates design outputs, on and offsite programme activities, and supply chain readiness,” says Susan Hone-Brookes, chief engineer at the MTC. “We think of it as bringing the learning of the automotive sector, with their car production flow lines and just-in-time supply chain integration to the construction sector. Creating a digital portal to share options for housing developments will enable developers and construction supply chains to gear up in a more strategic way, unlocking value through optimisation of manufacturing processes and understanding economies of scale.”

“A BETTER BUILT ENVIRONMENT” Aiming to transform the UK construction industry, the Construction Innovation Hub is funded by UK Research and Innovation through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.

“Working around the four core themes of Value, Manufacturing, Assurance and Digital, we are changing the way buildings and infrastructure are designed, manufactured, integrated and connected within our built environment.”

// We think of it as bringing the learning of the automotive sector to the construction market. //

IGNITE will introduce a tendering process to enable housing providers and developers to obtain prices from across modular manufacturing companies in one sweep. They can then shortlist or move forward from that information. This can potentially save months off a project’s lead time as well as the costs associated with the current process, so says the MTC. IGNITE will also enable developers to influence the manufacturing supply chain by procuring the same housing product across different modular manufacturing companies, so efficiencies can be achieved and better prices negotiated on manufacturers’ products, reducing the overall cost of the homes. Julie Alexander, director of technology and innovation for Places for People, adds: “Project IGNITE will create a new digital toolset that will allow developers to regain control of house designs across the modular manufacturing company supply chain. House builders that retain assets, such as in the regulated housing sector, require more input into the design of the products being procured to ensure they meet the needs of their customers. Project IGNITE will allow this to happen. “Developers will also get more visibility of the in-factory manufacturing process allowing them better financial

“The Hub will develop the next stage of building information management (BIM) processes, tools and standards for the whole lifecycle of an asset. The Hub will develop new digital approaches to quality control, testing and validation, and regulatory compliance...

control over modern methods of construction projects. The project will also ensure that all houses being procured will be delivered with a digital twin, critical for the future of asset management.” The MTC is a key member of the Construction Innovation Hub - an alliance of experts in manufacturing, digital, building performance standards and construction technology to drive innovation and technological advances in the construction and infrastructure sectors (see above). The MTC was founded by the University of Birmingham, Loughborough University, the University of Nottingham and TWI Ltd. The MTC’s industrial members include some of the UK’s major global manufacturers. The MTC aims to provide a competitive environment to bridge the gap between university-based research and the development of innovative manufacturing solutions, in line with the Government’s manufacturing strategy. 64-65 COMMENT- BHETA_TOR045_July20_LAW.qxp 31/07/2020 13:01 Page 1

market

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE As Covid-19 endures, BHETA is shifting away from what to do in the middle of a crisis, to how best to emerge from a crisis. Will Jones, Chief Operating Officer at BHETA, discusses what comes next…

s a trade association over the last few months, BHETA has played a key role in providing its members with reliable information. Thanks to some great partnerships with organisations like GlobalData and the CBI, excellent contacts with the leading retailers, the help of the association’s business service providers – and of course webinar technology - BHETA has delivered up to the minute business data and advice. Thankfully, I hope we are now reaching a stage where BHETA’s data and advice can focus more on how best to emerge from a crisis, as opposed to what to do in the middle of one. One of the facts which became noticeably clear by mid-May was that, while Covid-19 was having dire economic consequences in some sectors, not all organisations and companies found themselves impacted as adversely as they probably expected to be. In fact, there have been some positive sales stories and the key thing is to acknowledge them and act now to maximise their potential in the future. The figures published by BHETA in its quarterly economic report for Q1, which came out in June show the UK DIY and home improvement sector as

A

64

having a value of £3670 million which is 3.7% up year on year, albeit £14.1% down on a full year forecast for 2020. This makes the sector along with electricals at the same positive YOY figure, the two areas within the overall home enhancement market to show growth at this snapshot point. It is vital we understand the reasons why – and look to prolong that opportunity.

// Not all companies found themselves as adversely impacted as they probably expected to be. // Decorative DIY benefited from consumers undertaking home improvement projects such as painting and tiling while in selfisolation. 41.6% of consumers purchased a decorative DIY product and 37% a light-side DIY product and while consumables were certainly a big part of this upturn in sales, anecdotal evidence from BHETA members confirms that the tools to do the various jobs also sold well. Outside, garden sales also benefitted with 47.6% of consumers purchasing something for an outdoor project, while 21% bought a major electrical item, although in the latter case many of these purchases were a bringing forward of an acquisition into lockdown, which is likely to dampen demand going forward. So, for some BHETA members, lockdown’s home-based activities proved something of an economic silver lining. Moreover, these positive opportunities look set to continue as people remain largely home-based over the next 12 months, high levels of furlough persist into the autumn and consumer confidence in undertaking DIY projects has increased. This latter point is significant and backed up by fascinating statistics from among others Google trends. There has been a 300% increase

in UK searches for “How To Paint” since lockdown and a doubling in UK searches for “Garden Tools” in the same period – and these are just two of many relevant examples. Global watch-time of how to videos especially with ‘step by-step’ and ‘for beginners’ content was up 65% YOY. Which brings us to the other great phenomenon of the last few months – the role of the internet. That silver lining in sales which I mentioned has been a massive relief for many home improvement suppliers, but the positive impact was felt to the maximum only by those who were able to access the consumer via their own or others’ online platforms – even when DIY stores began to reopen. As we have seen, demand was high, but the upsurge saw many of these sales move online. Average daily unique visits to home and DIY e-commerce shops increased from a steady 250,000 per week in February and March to 425,000 per day in the week of 17 May. The top three retail performers during the period – Victorian Plumbing, Toolstation and Amazon UK - are all well known for their investment in their online platforms.

So, there are two key opportunities going forward. That shift in consumer focus to home-related projects is a major positive – and both suppliers and retailers need to gear sales and marketing strategies to prolonging that interest. The other is the considerable increase in pace of the switch from purchasing from bricks and mortar shops to buying online. Now of course some of these sales will revert to traditional outlets, but many will not. BHETA will certainly be continuing to support its supplier members in making certain they can access this consumer demand by tailoring their sales strategies accordingly. Retailers too, if they have not already done so, need to be maximising their online sales abilities.

// It is vital that the industry takes the positive learnings out of the adaptations it has had to make. // In conclusion, while no-one would pretend that the coronavirus pandemic has been anything other than a terrible event, it is vital that the industry takes the positive learnings out of the adaptions it has had to make. Now is the time to look seriously at how those learnings can be turned to good to map out the best path for the future.

COMMENT MULTI-CHANNEL SALES

Multi-channel sales are increasingly important for fastener and tooling business success …but staying on top of them is no mean feat, writes OGL Computer. ERP solutions and centralised management are among the tools you can use to keep loyal customers happy, whether they buy with you via the trade counter, online or on the phone…

hen facing uncertain times in the wider economy, market flexibility is key to maintaining revenues. Most importantly, the ability to target different market channels as they rise and fall in popularity is essential. Lockdown – and the relaxation of it – are perfect albeit extreme examples of the need for seamless multi-channel sales, enabling businesses to continue profitable operations. Multi-channel selling might sound complex but is something that most businesses will already be doing automatically – selling your products via more than one sales channel. This is often a mixture of traditional (sales reps, trade counter) and online sources (Amazon and eBay, e-commerce website), depending on the sector or business model. A recent survey of SMEs by OGL Computer found that ecommerce is growing in significance in the wholesale and distribution sector, with 82% stating that being able to sell products online easily is really important to them. However, staying on top of the multi-channel game is a more complex proposition than it might first appear. The key pillars to success here are centralising systems, unifying pricing across channels, and ensuring that the customer data already collected can be used effectively. This last pillar represents the ongoing success of a multi-channel strategy and should therefore be an increasingly important focus in the longer term.

Centralising for growth The single biggest operational challenge of implementing a multi-channel sales strategy is maintaining consistency across those channels, not only in key areas such as pricing, but also stock control, as well as providing consistent customer service in terms of order processing, delivery and rectifying any errors, losses, breakages and the like. The key here is to implement an ERP (enterprise resource planning) solution as it’ll be able to handle the necessary functions you’ll need, such as central databases of business information, integrated CRM and automated business processes. The benefits of centralised management are critical to multi-channel success, saving hours of admin time logging into different systems to check stock levels, for example, as well as minimising human error when moving data between systems. This will also allow the adoption of new digital channels – such as eBay or Amazon – relatively easily, and crucially will manage any new channels without significant overhead. OGL Computer’s research found that 82% of SMEs agree that ERP systems give greater availability and control of stock, but a significant number – 46% – of respondents think that ERP systems are for large enterprises only. That said, the research uncovered that many SMEs (76% of respondents) have been experiencing the benefits of integrating disparate systems first-hand. Over half (57%) listed the main reason to use a single system as reducing administration time, followed by 40% citing improved accuracy of information and 37% stating improved efficiencies by removing duplication of work across different departments. Unified pricing across all channels For your loyal trade customers who purchase through various channels (online, telephone, trade counter etc) it can be frustrating to receive a different shopping experience through each method, especially when it comes to price. An ERP solution will enable you to manage customer specific pricing, as well as retail and trade pricing, across every channel.

Aberdeen-based specialist tool supplier Gibb Tools rely on OGL Software solution to ensure their fast-paced, ever growing company keeps on top of their large warehouse and high-quality customer service. Gibb Tools was looking for “a computer package that could combine the functionality of the several independent processes that we were currently operating and reduce our reliance on paper and manual entry”. Before OGL Software was installed over two years ago, the team was largely using a manual system, with the accounts conducted using Sage 200 and stock management was handled using a bespoke system.

// Multi-channel selling might sound complex but is something that most businesses will already be doing automatically. // CRM for target market analysis A CRM can enable you to improve the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns by profiling and segmenting customers based on their business needs and behaviours. By profiling customers on their buying habits and capturing data about their business, your company can target specific customer groups with key pain points for the industry or particular buying habits of customers to increase the chance of a sale. By using an ERP system with an integrated CRM module, you will have access to the data and tools to extract, report and analyse the customer information to enhance the effectiveness of your campaigns. For example, the sales intelligence module in OGL’s Software is used by Dunstable-based Cablecraft, a manufacturer and supplier of cable and cable accessory solutions to compare and analyse sales figures to spot areas of success and highlight weaknesses to make improvements. “[the sales intelligence module] has been a revelation, we now have immediate access to an endless range of reporting, which wasn’t easily available before. It has enabled us to extract data much more easily and analyse and manipulate the data to assist with reporting.” Every business will have a different series of priorities when looking at a multi-channel strategy, but the overall aims of automation, centralisation of data and extending data analytics are common to even large enterprises. With the advent of cloud-based tools and powerful SME-focused products like those mentioned here, the barriers to effective multi-channel operation have been lowered enormously. www.ogl.co.uk/software

What has the Torque Community been getting up to...?

MTC APPRENTICES WIN WOMEN’S ENGINEERING HONOURS wo apprentices at the Coventry-based Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre have been appointed onto the Women’s Engineering Society Apprentice Board. First year apprentice Camila Rey da Rosa and third-year Melissa Chigubu have been selected to represent the voices of female engineering apprentices on the WES Apprentice Board. Camila worked as an occupational health and safety nurse in Brazil before moving to the UK 10 years ago and discovering her passion for engineering. Aged 36, she found an apprenticeship would allow her to get the qualifications and experience required to start a career in engineering, and is now a Level 3 mechatronic engineering technician apprentice with Amazon, with her training being delivered by the MTC. Melissa Chigubu, who was named as one of the top 50 women in engineering in the UK in 2019, has also been appointed to the WES Apprentice Board. Aged 19, she moved to the UK from Zimbabwe eight years ago and was the first female to complete the foundation gateway in the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre's new Apprenticeship Engineering Standard programme. Da Rosa and Chigubu are enthusiastic advocates of women in engineering, recognising that the number of women engineering professionals in the UK is low. They are keen to promote the work of WES and the support and advice that the network provides, helping to make engineering a more balanced, diverse and inclusive industry. Both apprentices have supported diversity, inclusion and STEM outreach activities while on their apprenticeships, encouraging people from all backgrounds to consider pursuing a career in engineering through an apprenticeship.

T

Camila Rey da Rosa

Melissa Chigubu

Da Rosa said: “I want to inspire women to investigate the opportunities that engineering could offer them. I discovered my passion for engineering later in life than most. Being part of the WES Apprentice Board will allow me to spread the message that it is never too late to start a fulfilling a career in engineering or to begin an apprenticeship, and help change the perception of the industry.” Chigubu said: “I am so excited to have been selected as one of the WES Apprentice Board members. I am really looking forward to working with the team to further promote women in engineering. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity.” The aim of the Apprentice Board is to make WES more accessible to apprentices, to reflect their concerns and to provide input into WES trustees and staff, allowing the voices of women apprentices within engineering to be heard.

DO ME A FAVOUR he lot of a tradesman or tradeswoman is not a happy one, according to a new poll from MyJobQuote.co.uk, which has found that homeowners are not shy to ask extra favours of contractors. Homeowners are keen to offload jobs on contractors in addition to their allotted tasks, from answering the door to babysitting the kids and even taking out the bins.

T

1. Answer the door > Over half of respondents say homeowners wanted them to see who was at the door after a knock. 2. Pick up the phone > Many also reported being called on to pick up the phone or even to make a phone call on the homeowner’s behalf.

72

torque-expo.com

3. Play fetch with the dog > Instead of getting to work, some tradespeople have been asked to watch the dogs or play with them, which might not be ideal if you’re not paid by the hour. 4. Asking for a lower price > Even after signing a contract, some people aren’t shy about asking for a better deal, regardless of how far along the tradesperson is. 5. Take out the bins > Amazingly, this is a “very common” request from clients, says the survey. 6. Babysit the kids > Perhaps the worst offence is asking a contractor to watch the kids for a few minutes, which almost 10% of tradesmen say has happened on the job.

CONSTRUCTION SUPPORT FOR NHS HEROES here has been heartening support for health workers during this pandemic, not least from the construction industry. EasyBuild, developer of pioneering software to help address the operational needs of construction firms, has been raising money to send gifts of thanks to NHS Trust workers during these trying times. Easybuild has been working with fellow Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce members to deliver ‘thank you’ gift bags each containing items including bath bombs, candles and other luxury products to the value of £20. EasyBuild CEO Carol Massay said: “During a weekly Hertfordshire Chamber call, Sam Tappenden, Director of Strategy at Hertfordshire Community Services NHS Trust, highlighted their biggest challenge in the current climate is staff morale.

MILESTONES

905 YEARS On these pages we’ve sometimes featured companies that are celebrating over 100 years of business, but this month we go ‘all in’ with two industry players that are celebrating a combined 905 years…

MESSE FRANKFURT CLOSES IN ON EIGHT CENTURIES how organisers and venues have perhaps had a year they’d rather forget, but at least one of them had something positive to celebrate – namely Messe Franfurt and its big anniversary. Emporer Frederick II granted trade fair rights to Frankfurt am Main on 11 July 1240, when Adam was still in short trousers, marking the birth of Messe Frankfurt. Messe Frankfurt is, of course, the organiser behind the allconquering Automechanika series of events, now stretching far beyond the German borders, into Dubai, New Delhi and old Blighty herself. The firm also runs Asiamold, Hardware + Tools Middle East and Wire and Cable Guanghou, among many others. The global lockdown meant Q2 was far quieter than originally planned, but Messe Frankfurt is once again holding

S

events – smaller ones on the Frankfurt exhibition grounds and building up to larger trade fairs as the year progresses – Nordstill in Hamburg in September, followed by the Frankfurt Book Fair in October. Replacement dates have also been planned in 2020 for many of the Group's postponed events worldwide. “The trade fair landscape will change as a result of the coronavirus crisis, and topics such as digitalisation, safety and security will have a key role to play,” says Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Messe Frankfurt. “Yet the trade fair industry's most important success factor remains personal encounters – something that Messe Frankfurt’s platforms have been making possible for 780 years now." www.messefrankfurt.com

SELCO CELEBRATES 125 nother firm celebrating a big anniversary in 2020 is UKbased Selco. Starting out as a Birmingham family-owned business in 1895, Selco is now a respected trade only builders’ merchant, with branches spanning across England and Wales. Back when Victoria was still on the throne, Sewell & Co (Timber) Ltd opened its modest timber mill and caravan fit-out business in Birmingham. Forty-three years on, in 1938, the firm developed into a fully-fledged builders merchants. The builders merchants renamed as Selco in 1982 with a revamped ‘cash and carry’ style business, exclusively for bonafide builders.
