SHOWS ARE LIKE BUSES... ... You wait years for a globally focused trade show and then three come along at once! This first half of 2023 sees the return of Munich’s BAU, the Taiwan International Fastener Show and of course the newly named Fastener Fair Global, in Stuttgart. All three promise to be worth attending, so we’ve dedicated pages to all three of them. But what are shows for these days? That’s the kind of question many of us have wrestled with, including here at Torque Towers from which we organise Torque-Expo, which got in early post-lockdown with the Telford show in May 2022. Is it somewhere to see new products? Or is it somewhere to do deals? Or simply to keep in touch with clients, suppliers and others? In industries that churn through new products at an alarming rate, the internet has – generally speaking – become a vehicle that is better suited to getting your new products in front of customers, (albeit via a screen). In truth, shows still perform many functions, but judging by recent conversations I’ve had, industry executives value trade shows particularly for relationship building and getting that sense of how the industry is doing. Connecting digitally with people is easy, but it seems it is hard to beat that opportunity to shake a hand, pick up and chat about one of those new rivet tools you’ve seen online, bolster relationships that have perhaps only been digital or even to eat a local delicacy (say, a bowl of maultaschen) while chatting about the state of the industry.

AGILITY AND RELIABILITY DURING

DIFFICULT TIMES

T

oday's industry is becoming increasingly volatile, and unpredictable events – such as a pandemic or war – can have serious implications for businesses across industries. Many are wondering: what to do then? This situation requires entrepreneurs to be flexible and be able to react quickly to changing conditions. This is not the case in every scenario – in such a situation, proven business partners become particularly important. Companies with the appropriate logistics and expertise can help their customers cope with these kinds of difficulties. They can ensure continuity and speed of supply by offering substitute products or in-house production, design support and professional advice, as well as additional services. The knowledge, experience and agility of these business partners can be priceless in difficult situations.

Furthermore, companies need to be able to scale their operations when needed and to have a good crisis strategy. This will enable them to respond quickly to changing conditions and customer needs while minimising risks. Even at the beginning of 2023, we are still facing many challenges. Rising costs, slowing global demand and other unpredictable events can have serious consequences for businesses. That is why it is crucial to rely on proven partners in this period of changeability. JLC TO BRING GOEBEL TO THE UK J

LC Sales Solutions Ltd is now the official sales partner of Goebel in the UK. JLC has its administrative headquarters in Bournemouth and is one of the leading suppliers of high-quality insulation products and personal service in that field. JLC has many Goebel products in stock like the 18V battery

tools, toggle fasteners, blind rivets, self-drilling and selftapping screws and many more items. Goebel told Torque Magazine: “We are proud of this new partnership. The goods can be delivered at short notice and on time thanks to large warehouses in Bournemouth. This makes JLC a strong partner for the UK.”

DK TOOLS LIMITED SLASH PRICES ON AMTECH PRODUCTS

A

mtech trade customers will now save up to 50% on selected lines as the company revisits its pricing structure for the first time in over a year. DK Tools last reviewed pricing across the entire Amtech catalogue back in September 2021 when freight and materials costs had “spiralled out of control”. However, the company promised its trade customers that prices would be continually monitored and as freight costs have now settled, the business has fulfilled its promise and passed on the saving. This move from a family-owned business will be a welcome relief for its retail and distribution network, especially as consumers continue to make value-driven purchasing decisions both in-store and online. Deepak Kalra, Managing Director of DK Tools, commented: “We promised our customers that we would weather the storm collectively during the pandemic by holding off on incremental price increases. Now that freight costs have been reduced, we have curtailed 1200 product prices in line with the current situation and will lock in the saving for the remainder of the year, to provide stability and value for our customers.” Amtech stockists will benefit from the price decreases immediately. If you wish to become a stockist, email contact@dktools.com or visit the website. www.dktools.com

14-16 Women in fasteners - Angie Hickman TOR071 2023.qxp 10/02/2023 12:13 Page 1

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

ANGIE HICKMAN

GLOBAL FASTENERS LTD It’s all about the customers for Global Fasteners’ Managing Director, Angie Hickman. Building relationships and keeping customers informed are central to her philosophy as she discusses her career in the fastener industry, working alongside her daughter and other highlights in this Women in Fasteners interview. How did you get into the industry? I have been in the fastener industry since I left school in 1983, when I started working at a small fastener company where I went into sales. I left there as office manager when the company closed and moved onto another fastener company straight away. I took a break away from the industry for a few years when I had my daughter but soon got back into the fastener trade when I was able to do so. Over the years I have been in this industry I have learnt to value each customer and treat them as your only one which I think has given me the best relationships with all my customers. What does your day-to-day job involve? As Managing Director of this family run business, I oversee all jobs and roles. That includes everything from purchasing, accounts, sales to packing goods in the warehouse and even tea-making. But I mainly deal with the customer sales side of the business as I always like to keep the customer informed.

What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and the company since you started? COVID and Brexit have been the biggest changes to the industry recently that has affected us. The cost of goods are rising weekly compared to in the past where you would be guaranteed the same price for years. Delivery dates have also been deeply affected as standard goods can now take six to ten months just to get into the UK. Another significant change is the decreasing number of local fixing and fastening companies, there used to be at least two companies on each industrial estate, now they are very few and far between. Customers now don’t back order as often, as no one can guarantee future work. I have also noticed the fall in telephone calls and personal interaction, everything is now done through emails and online portals. Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far? Global Fasteners is my ultimate career highlight. I have seen it through numerous recessions, Brexit and COVID and we are still standing. This year we celebrated our 18th anniversary. 14

14-16 Women in fasteners - Angie Hickman TOR071 2023.qxp 10/02/2023 12:13 Page 2

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS Global Fasteners Ltd is a family run business with Kevin, Angie and Charlie Hickman at the helm.

Your daughter also works at Global Fasteners, what is it like working alongside family? Charlie joined the company straight from school in 2007 and together we haven’t looked back since. As my wing woman she knows or is getting to know all aspects of the day-to-day running of Global Fasteners, ready to take over one day. We find that we work really well as a team as we are here to achieve one goal which is to secure our future. We have lots of laughs throughout the day which makes coming to work enjoyable, but we do try to leave work at the workplace and not take it home.

What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry? Working within this industry is an endless learning curve, my knowledge of fasteners and fixings is continually growing. I enjoy the challenge of helping customers find the right product for the job. This industry is constantly evolving and I’m always keen to see what’s new on the market.

What do you think needs to be done to encourage even more women to get involved in the fastener industry? When I first joined the fastener industry it was a very male dominated area, but gradually over the years I now speak to more and more women which is very encouraging for the future generation of females in the industry. Any final thoughts? Although it is sad to see the demise of many local fastener companies, I am very proud to see Global Fasteners going from strength to strength in this day and age. Although we couldn’t do it without the ongoing support of our amazing loyal customers. www.globalfasteners.co.uk

SPOTLIGHT ACCU

Introducing AccuBlack 2.0 Precision engineering component supplier Accu has tweaked and refined one of its best-sellers to produce a revamped black stainless steel finish – AccuBlack 2.0…

ince introducing a black stainless steel finish to our standard range of over 500,000 precision components in 2017, it has quickly become a favourite amongst engineers. After more than five years as one of Accu’s best-selling product lines, we listened to our customers’ feedback and have refined our production process, ensuring the quality of our blackened components is consistently better than ever before. Customised with our specialist blackening process, which converts the top layer of stainless steel into black magnetite, AccuBlack components boast a durable satin black finish whilst still maintaining the high precision, corrosion resistance and tensile strength of our natural stainless steel finish.

S

How AccuBlack 2.0 compares to alternative black finishes The latest update to our blackened components offers a dry oil finish, creating a deeper, satin black colour with a more even surface appearance. In comparison to conventional oxidising methods, the AccuBlack finish has an increased abrasion resistance, making the blackened appearance more durable during installation and removal in application. Further to this, alternative black finishes such as painting and plating add a solid layer to the outside of a component, which can negatively affect both the precise dimensions and surface texture. This is what makes AccuBlack ideal for a wide range of industry applications, including automotive, aerospace and military stealth projects, where a balance between appearance and performance is considered essential. AccuBlack fasteners and fixings are commonly chosen to match a black assembly, in particular when the components need to visually complement or blend in with a dark or black design.

18

torque-expo.com

Accu’s Superior Black Coating Following extensive testing under strict laboratory conditions, such as passing an independent 240 hour salt spray test, AccuBlack coatings are proven to be superior to standard cold blackening finishes. Whilst typical cold black finishes are carried out at room temperature using a copper selenium compound that leaves a sooty residue on the components, our coating offers a smooth satin black finish. We're confident that this superior coating will be a big hit with engineers and innovators, with the change also improving the corrosion resistance of our blackened nuts, bolts, washers and screws.

PERRY GROUP TAKES CONTROL OF ITS SUPPLY CHAIN Covid was a catalyst in Perry Group’s efforts to set up a base in India, significantly bolstering the group’s supply…

C

OVID-19 brought significant challenges such as delayed overseas supply chains and the ability to predict buying behaviour. Multiple lockdowns and unpredictable government decisions disrupted, slowed, or even completely stopped the flow of finished goods. This led to many businesses having to rethink their supply chain. Business insights and conditions survey reported that 30% of businesses in the manufacturing, wholesale, and retail trade experienced global supply chain disruption (ONS 2022). The Perry Group, a leading supplier of gate hardware and ironmongery in the UK, had a plan to overcome its reliance within its supply chain over a year before the pandemic began. However, disruption caused by the pandemic accelerated Perry’s plans, which was a calculated decision made by the board of directors. Fast forward to the present day, the group now owns a Manufacturing Export Company based in greater Noida, India with over 50,000 ft2 of warehousing and manufacturing capabilities, sending FCL shipments around the world. The factory is now producing over 1,000 SKUs, shipping on average 8 x 40 ft containers each month, with significant capacity to grow. Many benefits come with this new venture for the Perry Group, not least its enhanced manufacturing capabilities allowing for bespoke products and tools to be developed to the exact requirements of its customers, as well as opening the doors to many new products and ranges that previously were not viable, such as sheep hurdles, metal gates, laser cut wall art much more. All items are produced across a total of 45 of machines capable of moulding, pressing, casting, forming,

R

thread rolling, laser cutting and more. The factory also has its own finishing plant for powder coating products and has developed superior weather resistant coating which provides products with a minimum of 10 years rust-free life outside when applied. The company is currently developing new products with this premium finish ready to launch for 2023. Utilising the company’s existing distribution into their Midlands based headquarters, they can offer reduced minimum order quantities by merging customer’s shipments onto their own FCLs. India has been a world leader in ironmongery and outdoor hardware products for over a decade, however, the gap between China and India is still significant when it comes to manufacturing prowess in other areas. With the loss of productivity due to the pandemic and political uncertainty of China and its government, many companies are reportedly looking to shift their requirements to other countries, such as tech giant Apple deciding to move some production of Apple products from China to India due to various factors that also included COVID-19 disruptions. The future for India’s manufacturing industry is promising, making it an idea location to base Perry’s factory. A Perry is a fourth generation, family-owned and run company established in 1925. Now spanning a global trade network based in the heart of the West Midlands, where it has a 140,000-plus ft² facility spanning over five acres of land and has a fully automated robot warehouse. www.perrytrade.co.uk

SPOTLIGHT Ferdinand Gross

HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY PURCHASE AND MANAGE SPECIAL PARTS As technical requirements increase, the demand for customised drawing parts is growing. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when procuring them, explains Ferdinand Gross...

hen looking for the ideal connection solution for their product, C-parts customers can choose from hundreds of thousands of DIN and standard parts. However, increasing technical requirements mean that customers often need C-parts to be custom-manufactured according to their drawings and specifications. For Thomas Erb, Managing Director at the C-parts specialist Ferdinand Gross, procuring these individual parts can be a complex task: “In contrast to standard parts, which are produced by the millions by a large number of established manufacturers in certified quality, drawing parts bring with them special challenges in terms of feasibility, cost efficiency and, not least, security of supply.” As an experienced supplier with over 25,000 drawing parts in its range, Ferdinand Gross thus relies on an established process that addresses all potential problem areas and minimises procurement complexity and risks – all for the benefit of its customers.

W

Briefing & manufacturing technology The manufacturing process is defined based on the customer briefing (drawing or works standard, sample, technical delivery conditions, etc). Experienced application engineers help to develop the ideal technical solution – whether turning, pressing, punching, milling or combined processes – taking into account material, geometry and batch size. The advantage of a C-parts dealer compared to a manufacturer is their “neutrality”: instead of being limited to certain processes by the machinery, you can search for the highest quality, most cost-efficient process with an open mind. Selecting suitable suppliers Based on the technological solution, one or more suitable suppliers must be found. Together with the customer, Ferdinand Gross selects the most suitable supplier for the chosen technological solution from its pool of more than 900 manufacturers. In addition to European manufacturers, Asian premium suppliers have increasingly established themselves in the drawing parts segment in recent years. Significant cost savings can be achieved by working with them, and they can also contribute to risk diversification and thus to security of supply within the framework of a multi-sourcing strategy. Which brings us to the last important point.

20

torque-expo.com

System integration and safe supply chain management As mentioned at the outset, security of supply is a particular challenge, as it is inherently impossible to switch to a large number of suppliers in an emergency. A higher level of stockpiling as well as maintaining multiple suppliers can minimise the risk. But according to Thomas Erb, integrating drawing parts into a holistic Kanban concept is at least as important: “With this close form of cooperation, in which we completely take over the stockpiling and regular supply, we know both the required quantities and the preferred delivery rhythms of our customers and are in regular exchange with them. As part of our safe supply chain management, we are thus able to identify and evaluate emerging procurement risks at an early stage and develop intelligent solutions for drawing parts at risk of bottlenecks in good time.” In conclusion, it can be said that despite all their special features, drawing and special parts can also be procured efficiently and securely at attractive prices. This is best done together with an experienced C-parts specialist who combines relevant technical expertise and reliable QA processes with a global supplier network and a holistic Kanban solution. www.schrauben-gross.com

Güde Shines spotlight on lean logistics

Hall 1, Stand 1122

Plettenberg-based washer manufacturer Güde produces safety washers and wire bended parts, as well as screw and fastening devices, all with a sharp focus on added services, lean logistics and high-quality products. Using custom-made machines and tooling, Güde’s production facility ships up to 140 pallets of products every single day to wholesalers and distributors across the world. “We are constantly making sure we have all the latest technology available,” says Lutz Güde, Managing Director at Güde GmbH. “This means we can offer full customisation to our customers, in terms of products, quantities, as well as packaging, which we need to stay one step ahead of our competitors. “Added services have never been more important and we are proud of our ability to adapt to each customer’s individual requirements.” Part of this bespoke service sees Güde offer personalised labelling (in customer-specified quantities) or apply the customer’s specific label to the packaging. This efficient move means the production line is more streamlined, cutting multiple unnecessary packaging processes, which in turn reduces total procurement costs. As part of a long-term strategy, Güde recently opened a new facility in Mikołów, Poland, in order to increase its production capacity, be even more efficient as a supplier and to be able to act quickly according to the market requirements. With increased capacity Güde is able to play a bigger role in contributing to the energy transition, including large solar parks, new electricity highways and expansions in the railway sector. www.guede.net

Growermetal Flagship products, application solutions and exclusive new technologies Hall 3, Stand 2208 From the 21st-23rd March 2023, Growermetal will be back in Germany for Fastener Fair Global in Stuttgart. Following the reopening of the local and international trade fairs, this year the Italian fastener business is going to introduce new exclusive technologies developed by its R&D team. “As producers of safety washers, we are constantly focused on innovation in order to enhance safety in every sector or application,” comments Paolo Cattaneo, CEO of Growermetal. “The expansion of our washer range is an essential part of this process together with the investments in new technologies and the achievement of important certifications.” With the launch of the exclusive technology of Grower TenKeep© in 2019, the foundation of the JRC MATT in 2020, obtaining the quality management system certification EN 9100:2018 standard in 2021 and the presentation of Grower SpheraTech© last year, the period before and after the pandemic outbreak has been particularly significant for the company, in spite of the difficulties of the market. The overview on the main trends of the fastener and fixing industry offered by the Fastener Fair Global, characterised by the presence of some of the most important companies of the sector, will be the perfect context to introduce the new products to the distributors, suppliers and visitors that will take part in the event, says Growermetal “As in the past trade fairs, our flagship products will be displayed at our booth, so the new technologies will be

available to our guests together with our complete washer range,” adds Cattaneo. Among the products, there will be Grower TenKeep©, a flat washer with surfaces of different knurls, characterised by excellent performance even in presence of dynamic loads or extreme vibrations. By its side there will be also Grower SpheraTech©, an inseparable set made from the combination of a spherical (top) washer and a conical seat (down) washer which guarantees a safe locking function on non-parallel bearing surfaces, avoiding damages or breakages of the bolted joint connection thanks to an angle of inclination up to three degrees. In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the wide variety of solutions offered by Growermetal: from railway to aerospace, from power generation to automotive, including solutions for infrastructures, industry, electromechanic and transport the range includes safety washers and blanked parts for any kind of application. New products will take part in the showcase too, says Cattaneo: “During last year our R&D team worked in the development of new fastening technologies aimed at offering exclusive solutions to our sector, which is more and more challenging. “It confirms our company’s commitment to the creation of added value for customers, through competitive tools based on innovation and inspired by their requests. We couldn’t be happier with this result and to have the possibility to launch the new products during the next Fastener Fair Global.” We’ll have to wait to find out more about the application fields and specific function of these new technologies: “We are in the final phases of the project, so everything is still top secret, but we can assure you that the quality is in line with the other products of Growermetal’s range. We’re looking forward to revealing the new designs and the fair in Stuttgart will surely be the perfect context for this occasion.” To sum up: new technologies, innovative products and competitive services can be expected on the Growermetal stand in Stuttgart. www.growermetal.com

INTERVIEW Harrison & Clough

“A force to be reckoned with” Now part of the Dormole empire, Harrison & Clough has a renewed focus on its famous METALMATE brand and has been significantly revamping its internal organisation to position it to hit some significant goals. Torque Magazine speaks with Business Development Director Mark Dorrington and Marketing and Web Manager Tom Metcalfe…

arrison & Clough (H&C) is one of the UK’s oldest and biggest players in the fastener and fixing sector. Located in Keighley, with the picturesque Yorkshire countryside on its doorstep, H&C has warehousing that stretches over 120,000 ft², with 12,000 pallet spaces and 11,000 picking shelves and a sizeable portion given over to automated packing. While the last couple of years have been busy (and dramatic) for most businesses – for obvious reasons – Harrison & Clough also had the not insignificant matter of being acquired by Dormole at the start of 2020. Dormole is a group that focuses on tool distribution and logistics with some significant business within, including Toolbank, Dublin-set Tucks Fasteners, ForgeFix, Olympia Tools and others. This busy period has seen little let up. Last year, the firm received significant quantities of containers of fasteners, equating to over 19,500 pallets and over 12,000 metric tonnes of stock which has created good depth of stock and superb availability. For 2023, Harrison & Clough acknowledges it is an unsettled period for the economy, but remains positive. Business Development Director Mark Dorrington, who recently returned to the business, explains: “It’s been a strange time and people can talk business down. We’ve seen customers make smaller orders, but then they go on to make up the shortfall with further orders, so we’ve generally seen sales levels back to where we expected them to be.” H&C has set itself modest growth target in terms of turnover for 2023. “We are approaching it with a positive outlook. We’ve had a good couple of years and we’ll repeat the things that have gone well, working closely with customers.” Aside from sizeable trading numbers and acquisitions, there’s been plenty going on behind the scenes, such as an influx of new blood at Harrison & Clough, including the aforementioned Mark Dorrington. After nine years away with Everbuild and Sika, Dorrington returned in summer 2022, keen to bring his expanded knowledge to the firm.

H

36

torque-expo.com

With new recruits there has been an opportunity to revise and improve processes, like training. Dorrington explains: “Harrison & Clough has a reputation for having a lengthy training process, which is important because staff need that industry knowledge. Last year the marketing team, led by Tom Metcalfe, developed and launched a brand new website, which is a great resource, with an extensive download centre and technical data sheets. We said ‘why are we spending time using other methods of training when we have this amazing website and can have our expanded team become more knowledgeable sooner’?” Other key changes have seen a revamp of internal working, explains Dorrington: “We used to have smaller offices where the senior staff would work from, but we’ve committed to having an open plan office, bringing people together. It’s been a huge benefit. You can hear what is going on, you can get involved… sales and purchasing are working more closely together… Now every commercial department is situated within the “Commercial Circle”. Good ideas get broadcasted and working relationships have improved between the teams, allowing us to support the customer more efficiently.” The firm has worked hard to maintain that open mindset throughout. “We are telling the team what we are planning and we’re getting ideas from people wherever they are in the business… Those at the coalface know more of the problems than the management does, so you have to talk to them and listen.” The acquisition has impacted positively: “Dormole’s levels of insight and support are excellent,” says Dorrington. “They are really open, friendly and they have that family feel. They give us the security to invest in product, people, platform and processes listen, – thus far it’s been a great journey! As an organisation, with all the Dormole businesses, we should be a force to be reckoned with.” The move has seen Harrison & Clough reassess some elements of the business, including tools. INTERVIEW Harrison & Clough

a sister company – one of Europe’s largest specialist wholesalers of hand and power tools – has naturally led to H&C focusing ever more on its specialism of industrial fasteners: “That is what it says above the door”. Coming back to that new website, H&C’s ERP now links up with its B2B site, which has proved increasingly popular, contributing 22% of order lines: “We’ve worked hard to make the pricing element work, ensuring each customers bespoke pricing is live and ‘web-ready’ commercial prices are available across all our lines.” With over 9,000 stocked lines, H&C offers a low £55 carriage paid consignment stock value enables customers to top up their stock or buy specific fasteners for their customers. Orders before 5.15pm will see same day despatch. “We’re slick, our operations team are really clued up and are the backbone of what we are trying to do.” Customer relationships Over time, sales offices have become less reliant on phones and now Harrison and Clough sees almost three quarters of enquiries and orders come electronically. With relationships a key factor in sales, and as buying habits change how does H&C enhance personal communication? Mark Revak says this is a challenge, but there are ways to overcome it: “Even from an email there is an opportunity to have a conversation and to make a difference. Each day we build on and look at the opportunities to have a dialogue, whether it is following up on enquiries or orders taken, every point of contact is a chance to offer more support to our customers” “Because of our size and stocks we can help to even out the peaks and troughs of the price inflation. Customers trust us – our levels of service and support over many years have been a constant and consistent element that engenders those levels of trust. We have high availability percentages, we have alternatives and we’ve got it covered.” Holding stocks for customers is another way H&C can help customers, Revak adds: “Our data plays to our strengths when we partner with companies. We can reserve stock for the year and we can tell you how much of a certain product you have ordered from us over the course of the month, which can give customers chance to make savings. Some like to get a weekly delivery and others like to plan for the next month. On the other

38

hand, we are seeing next day delivery become more popular again after the Covid lockdowns which is our core service offering to customers.” Operating over four sites and operating lean and clean warehouses, there’s been a move away from 24 hour operations, aided by switching to using reliable couriers like DX instead of operating its own fleet of vans. Automated packing lines have boosted efficiency and provided more subtle advantages – like packing boxes in a certain order to suit couriers and help keep boxes arriving in good condition.

Developing METALMATE Harrison & Clough’s own brand of fixings and fasteners, MATE, has long been a champion for the business and part of this year’s plan is to focus on the brand: “It has the pedigree and history – we are going to reinforce that by getting the METALMATE name in particular out there even more, backing up our customers. The brand means something and has quality assured.” “METALMATE leads the way in Compliance giving piece of mind to the customer that H&C has done the groundwork beforehand”. The integrity of the brand is enhanced by the checks made by H&C’s quality team dedicated to ensuring the quality of the products, and the reliability and security f the supply chain.

Sustainability is another topic on the agenda. Plastics are being phased out by the company, while ISO 14001 is firmly on the agenda for the near future. The firm can also learn from sister businesses like Toolbank, which has been dealing with the kind of Plc customers that are increasingly demanding more sustainable practices from their suppliers. When it comes to expansion, H&C has been examining potential growth areas. Dorrington explains: “We’ve identified customers that use us for products that end up in various industries. We can expand the depth and breadth of ranges and launch dedicated lines, supporting their product journey and by extension building levels of business between us. He concludes: “We are a friendly bunch. We’re not in suits selling life insurance – we are just normal people cracking on!”

SPOTLIGHT DÖRKEN

THE ZINC FLAKE: YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROW The success story of zinc flake technology has progressed unstoppably since the 1970s. The high-performance coating for metal components of all kinds is a reliable protection against external influences, writes DÖRKEN…

A

zinc flake coating ensures a longer durability of components and the structural safety of the overall construction – with a finish tailored to customer needs. As the requirements for corrosion protection have changed in recent years and will continue to change, the technology must be constantly researched and developed. The DÖRKEN team responsible for this faces the many challenges presented by the market daily. The beginnings: springs and screws The first areas of application for zinc flake were primarily components made of high-strength steels, such as screws and springs. Particular attention was paid to avoiding hydrogeninduced embrittlement of the steel. In this case, the diffusion of atomic hydrogen into the material under the simultaneous effect of tensile stress leads to embrittlement and cracking. In the coating process of the zinc flake, however, no hydrogen is offered at all, which prevents this danger from arising in the first place. The thin layers of coating were also an important requirement, especially for screws, in order to meet the high demands on fitting accuracy. The zinc flake coatings have an average thickness of only 8-20 µm, which is thinner than a human hair.

Zinc flake systems are suitable for coating springs and give them effective corrosion protection.

Solutions for larger components After the technology had established itself for small parts, it became increasingly interesting for other components as well. Particularly for bulkier and heavier parts that cannot be coated using the dip-spin method like the bulk material, there was a demand for an alternative. Application by spraying (manually or by robot) is usually the method of choice. The zinc flake coating is normally cured in an oven starting at 180°C. However, this process reaches its limits above certain component dimensions. In addition to components that simply do not fit into a baking oven due to their geometry, components with plastic or electronic components also require a different

40

torque-expo.com

approach. These must not be exposed to high temperatures, as they would otherwise be damaged. DÖRKEN has developed a coating solution that cures at room temperature. This saves energy and costs compared to the typical process. The coating is simply applied by spraying and cures within around 20 to 60 minutes at an ambient temperature of 20 to 25°C, depending on the applied layer thickness. After seven days, the coating is cross-linked and then offers very good cathodic corrosion protection properties in constant and cyclic tests. An example of the use of the room-temperature-curing zinc flake is the coating of wheel bearings. Wheel bearings have to be assembled without any coating due to the production process. Here, after assembly, the corrosion protection comes into play, which must not be exposed to high temperatures. This effectively protects the wheel bearings, which play a major role in vehicle safety, from corrosion.

Topcoats: The status quo and the future Since the invention of the zinc flake, more importance has been attached to the appearance. Especially on the part of OEMs in the automotive sector, an appealing finish is required for certain components. By selecting a suitable topcoat, the look of the coating is not only improved, but the properties of the basecoat are also usefully complemented. In addition to the individual colouring, a defined coefficient of friction can also be set or resistance to chemical, mechanical or abrasion influences can be achieved. Development has not come to a halt in the field of topcoats either. On the contrary: the development team at DÖRKEN has recently worked on a topcoat for screws. This solution is waiting to be presented… The team from DÖRKEN will be at Fastener Fair Global in Stuttgart to provide an insight into this latest innovation. www.doerken.com

BOLT MAINTENANCE WITH HUGE POTENTIAL As the largest source of renewable energy, more than 1,300 GW of hydropower capacity was available worldwide as of 2020 according to The World Bank, although half of existing facilities were installed before 1990.

n Operation and Maintenance Strategies for Hydropower, The World Bank’s handbook highlights Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) as a ‘critical’ priority for an industry with aging infrastructure. Practitioners and decision makers need to balance maintenance costs with the risk of both economic and safety failures. The International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) has recorded hundreds of accidents at hydroelectric dams in the past century, where in some cases poor MRO strategies compounded flawed design with catastrophic consequences. The handbook explains a chain of maintenance failures at Sayano–Shushenskaya Dam in Russia as recently as 2009, where excessive vibrations from one turbine and the failure of head-cover bolts resulted in “the destruction of the powerhouse, loss of 6 GW of power generation and 75 fatalities.” Nord-Lock Group specialises in bolted joint security, with extensive knowledge of working in the most extreme environments.

I

Optimised bolted joints reduce downtime and improve safety For maintenance teams responsible for air, electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems – all the auxiliaries that keep a turbine operating 24 hours a day – Nord-Lock Group’s experience with excessive vibrations and dynamic loads could be an important asset. D2FC, a French energy valve producer, generalised the use of Nord-Lock washers thanks to the tested performance of their wedge-locking geometry, which was effective at countering bolt loosening caused by vibrations in their underwater application. The customer had previously soldered hexagonal washers to a small plate which proved costly during maintenance. Instead, the Nord-Lock washers are reusable and facilitated great progress for D2FC to fix valve seats onto double eccentric ball valves.

Superbolt solves turbine misalignment Coupling alignment is also key for the smooth operation of hydropower turbines, however, many plants are forced to 42

torque-expo.com

schedule frequent maintenance due to the extremely tight tolerances involved. Nord-Lock Group solutions helped another operator to align their thrust block perpendicular to the turbine shaft within one-thousandth of an inch, avoiding run-out and wobble. Superbolt has been used in hydropower applications since the 1980s, with its core multi-jackbolt tensioning products frequently applied to secure Pelton wheels, and recent innovations like Superbolt EzFit have helped to eliminate misalignment in turbine couplings. As well as alignment, Superbolt products offer the security of high clamping force, critical for a Pelton wheel exposed to water projected at up to 500km/h, for example. A high preload can also be achieved using simple hand tools and low torque inputs thanks to the multi-jackbolt approach, this makes accurate tensioning possible when you’re working in restricted spaces. With Boltight hydraulic tensioning, you can also tighten and loosen multiple bolts simultaneously in a fast, accurate and safe way.

Optimise bolt maintenance in your turbines The outcome for MRO teams who partner with Nord-Lock Group is secure critical bolted connections that are easy to install/remove, safe and reusable. Or in other words, more flexible and cost-effective maintenance with a reduction in downtime. Nord-Lock solutions are available worldwide, and you can speak to a local sales engineer right away. Nord-Lock Group services focus on life cycle profitability, design, production, training, and installation support. Nord-Lock will work closely with you to understand your needs, solve your problems and design an optimal long-term solution that maximises the productivity, safety and reliability of your application. Nord-Lock Group produces Bolted, a biannual magazine covering secure bolting, industry insights and engineering challenges. Head to Bolted.com to read the latest issue. www.nord-lock.com

SPOTLIGHT DK TOOLS

Quality and value

The Amtech brand has been successfully providing tools that balance value with quality for over 30 years. And when everyone is doing what they can to mitigate inflation, Amtech is just the sort of brand that comes into its own. Torque Magazine visits DK Tools HQ to speak with Director Ishan Kalra and Head of Marketing and e-Commerce Ricky Johal… mtech is a long established and growing brand, with over 1,800 products in a range that covers 11 master categories, including building, decorating, automotive and more. DK Tools is the company behind the Amtech brand. Based a stone’s throw from London, it was established in the mid1980s, originally starting out on a local market stall. Things have changed significantly since those humble days, not least with the launch of Amtech in 1996, which has picked up a number of awards along the way. “Hand tools are Amtech’s biggest category – traditionally it has been the core for 30 years,” says Ishan Kalra, a Director at DK Tools. Most recently, Amtech has relaunched and extended its power tools range, with 15 new additions to the competitively priced range plus accessories, including a Cordless Impact Driver and an 18V Li-Ion Cordless Combi Drill. The brand went on to make further headlines when it revealed a significant price cut across its ranges, in response to normalising freight rates after a tumultuous year or so. “The last few years have been an absolute whirlwind. Covid saw surging demand and the supply chain struggled to cope,” says Kalra. “We have had a successful period – now there are different challenges, the economy, the cost of living... You had some articles on overstocking recently in Torque Magazine (November 2022). All industries are facing it.” DK Tools has curtailed 1,200 product prices in line with the current situation, passing on the savings to its trade customers.

A

Retailer and merchant support “You don’t always need to spend £30 on something when you can spend £5, it depends on the job,” says Ishan Kalra, explaining the Amtech proposition. “Tradespeople buy products on different levels, some items it is about brand loyalty, sometimes it is about convenience and sometimes it is about price.” Head of Marketing and e-Commerce Ricky Johal adds: “We don't try and compete with established global brands because we let our price and quality do the talking. Why would a trades 44

torque-expo.com

person or DIY enthusiast pay more for a tool that performs the same function?” The last major economic downturn, in 2008, saw what the firm calls a ‘trade down trend’, Kalra says: “Everyone is looking for value. Tradespeople’s customers are looking for it as well. Amtech is designed to attract that audience, offering value and quality.” Dealers are supported with an award-winning B2B ecommerce site in place for trade orders, Johal explains: “We also have a consumer domain that serves end-users of our products in terms of value-added services such as free product advice and personalised video tutorials. Consumers can also locate their local Amtech stockists from the site.” There are a wealth of POS and merchandising options for merchants and retailers stocking Amtech, with a low qualifying order level, what’s more, the firm says its door is always open regarding bespoke merchandising to suit stores. With heavy marketing investment from DK Tools, the firm is optimistic for 2023 and beyond: “Our industry has been relatively robust. The housing market has slowed, but potentially that frees up budget for home improvement. Last year I think everyone spent on holidays, desperate to get away after the lockdowns. This year, I think we will be back to some kind of normality. “We’ve got further developments for Amtech in the works, new technologies and filling gaps in the range. We’ll continue to fully support the trade as we look to grow the retail and distributor network.” www.dktools.com

ou’ll know the story by now, here’s a big international fastener-relevant show that is returning after a long gap enforced by Covid and its many lockdowns. But this year’s long-awaited Taiwan International Fastener Show also has the small fact that it is based in an Asian manufacturing hub at a time of acute supply chain disruption. The USA’s much publicised desire to rely less on China for manufacturing, amidst the European Union’s latest antidumping duties on fasteners from China, the rise of onshoring, more vocal advocates for sourcing fasteners and goods from closer to home… descriptions like ‘unprecedented’ are often bandied around too readily, but the past couple of years have certainly made their case for claiming to be the least stable in decades.

SHOW PREVIEW TAIWAN INTERNATIONAL FASTENER SHOW

// Fastener Taiwan will gather 300 exhibitors with 800 booths, and we are expecting 8,000-9,000 domestic and international visitors. // Undoubtedly, sourcing will be a hot topic at the show, but there will also be plenty of other reasons to come along, to judge the state of the fastener business in a place where big deals get done and to greet a bunch of colleagues and suppliers you may not have had chance to see in person for years. Ahead of the show, Torque Magazine spoke with co-organiser TAITRA (Taiwan External Trade Development Council), which implements the event with the Taiwan Industrial Fasteners Institute. Expectations are high, despite recent challenges with international travel: “Fastener Taiwan will gather 300 exhibitors with 800 booths, and we are expecting 8,000-9,000 domestic and international visitors.”

You naturally tend to hear about challenges from the perspective of those geographically close to you, but how has the Taiwan fastener industry viewed the acute difficulties the industry has had to negotiate in recent years? “Prepare and rise,” TAITRA tells us. “Although the US and Europe continue to promote the localisation of supply chains, Taiwan's fastener industry has found a way to survive in the process of experiencing the Sino-US trade war and the establishment of trade barriers in various countries. “In fact, this period has provided Taiwan’s fastener industry extra preparation and rest time. In addition to accelerating the application of smart manufacturing and IoT

application during the epidemic to improve the production efficiency and quality of products, most leading companies have distributed production to Southeast Asian countries to strengthen the resilience of the supply chain, and focus on automotive fasteners, aerospace fasteners, medical fasteners and wind power fasteners.” TAITRA says the Taiwan fastener industry continues to be characterised by the drive to “continuously improve product differentiation and high value”. It adds: “Overviewing the global fastener supply and demand market, mostly fastener businesses are applied to automotive, aerospace and infrastructure. Also, the trends of global net zero emissions and carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), carbon reduction and net zero emissions are not only environmental issues but also economically important to keep industry with international competitiveness.

// In 2023, Fastener Taiwan will go hybrid with physical and online exhibition for buyers. //

“Therefore, stainless steel fasteners, anti-corrosion fasteners and those fasteners for hybrid renewable energy's application will be the key and a potential niche market for Taiwan fastener, moreover, to accelerate the development of high value and value-add design will be the most important trend of fastener industry in Taiwan.”

Who’s buying what? Given recent disruption, you may expect to see wild fluctuations in Taiwan’s fastener exports since 2019, but the numbers are perhaps a bit more consistent that you might expect, at least in terms of units (see table). TAITRA takes us through the numbers: “According to Taiwan Industrial Fasteners Institute, from 2018-2022, the unit price of exported fastener constantly grew from USD 2.88 to USD 3.81, it clearly shows that Taiwan fastener is developing in the

TOOLANT – LAUNCH NEW FOUR SPIRAL STEP DRILL BITS > toolant® has launched the new Four Spiral Step Drill Bits series, which improve the drilling efficiency by four times more than normal straight flute step drill bits. The most common use of step drills is drilling through a household plumbing pipe. Drilling a big-sized hole using an impact driver is not an easy job. You might be stuck in the metal for bigger steps, walking when you start drilling. With four cutting edges, the step drill bits guarantee a faster and smoother cutting. Compared to the straight or three spiral flutes, the spiral groove improves chip removal. Chips result in heat build-up and cause the drill to burn out and get stuck. toolant® Four Spiral Flutes design provides a better solution. toolant® launched the whole product line covering the most commonly used coating and base material. • M35 Cobalt with TiAlN Coating delivers outstanding heatresistance, wear-resistant, and nano hardness, giving it up to 10 times the lifetime. Designed for hard metal, stainless steel. • M2 High Speed Steel is characterised by well-balanced toughness, wear resistance and red hardness properties. Use for carbon steel, aluminium sheet, soft metals, etc. • High Speed Steel with Titanium Coating is a generalpurpose coating, which improves the toughness of the drill bit, provides better chip flow and faster speed than uncoated ones. www.toolant.com

TORQUE FOCUS HAND TOOLS AND CONSUMABLES SCELL-IT – WORKER HEALTH AT THE FOREFRONT OF NEW PRODUCT >

Although Scell-it UK have built a strong reputation of being one of the biggest distributors of rivets and rivnuts, they are also known for supplying a wide range of construction fixings and setting tools. All of these products are constantly being examined by their research and development department for improvements and redesigns. Quality and performance are tested and they look at better ways they can help the users of their setting tools to achieve faster installation speed while creating more comfort during use. Health and safety are always important considerations in the construction industry but an area that often gets overlooked is musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Construction professionals often have to perform painful and repetitive tasks that can be stressful for the body - made worse when using unsuitable or defective tools. These repetitive tasks can result in MSDs which cause fatigue, pain, discomfort in movement and even, in the long term, difficulties in performing their jobs or even permanent disability. Excessive use of vibrating tools may also lead to Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome and vibration White Finger – both are debilitating conditions.

Gary Moseley, Scell-it UK MD, said: “When designing a new tool, our research and development department will always consider the end user and the factors that can help them to do their job safely, comfortably and efficiently.” This design ethic has produced a range of tools that have many unique ergonomic features that always consider health and safety for the user. Easy grip handles, battery powered mechanisms and curved lines all benefit the worker. Their latest innovation is a chemical anchor gun that enhances the amount of pressure exerted by the operator during use by 20 times. This new extractor gun, called the EASY PUSH, puts the health and safety of the user at the forefront of design. As well as it’s ‘less effort – less pressure’ feature, the tool has a gripping area under the cradle of the cartridge to allow precision during application, a repositioning of the traditional release trigger for one-handed use and added protection on the hand grip. The big advantage of the EASY PUSH is how easy it is to extract resin without getting hand fatigue. The clever internal mechanism takes a very easy trigger squeeze and multiplies it through to the pushing power on the resin – this is so effective that sometimes it can be operated with just one finger. This means more applications can be set in less time with less rest breaks needed in between. Scell-it hope their tools will prove invaluable in reducing injuries in a profession that needs to become more aware of the user’s health. The EASY PUSH and a wide range of setting tools can be found on the Scell-it UK website. www.scellit.co.uk

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES –

ONLINE AND OTHERWISE Technological developments are supposed to help make things easier but unless the right software is in place and you’re partnered with the right organisations, it can be a challenging task. We look at some of the IT services and software on the market that are helping manufacturers, tool companies and more to get the job done well. INTACT SOFTWARE – MARKETPLACES - A DRIVING FORCE FOR GROWTH > Today’s consumers have come to expect multiple options for buying the same product – in store, ecommerce websites and on online marketplaces. If you’re not familiar with online marketplace selling, it’s where you can sell your goods and connect with customers on an ecommerce platform such as Amazon, eBay, Shopify, ManoMano and many others. So even if you already have a thriving online store, uploading your products to select ecommerce marketplaces is a way to expand your reach. And for businesses who don’t have a website, marketplaces offer an easy way to gain online visibility - and an additional sales stream. However, juggling multiple marketplace portals, updating product information, and managing orders can quickly become a time-consuming obstacle to growth. So, while online marketplaces have emerged as a powerful means of increasing revenue and driving business development, the key to its success is leveraging the right technologies to support this business model. TORQUE FOCUS IT SERVICES, SOFTWARE & E-BUSINESS TOOLMAKER REAPS REWARDS OF SWITCHING TO HYPERMILL >

When Mark Newcombe had an opportunity to acquire the company that he had worked with for over 15 years, he grabbed it with both hands. Having a clear vision for Plymouth-based Tooltech, the company entered the aerospace industry as a niche manufacturer of wax injection mould tools and ancillary tooling. More than 20 years later, the company has driven forward at a rapid pace, a trajectory that has been directed by investment in the workforce and cutting-edge technology – like the investment in hyperMILL CAM software from Open Mind Technologies. The shop floor at Tooltech consists of machine tools such as AD35L EDM machines from Sodick, 3 to 5-axis machining centres from YCM, Hedelius and Mikron, XYZ turning centres and also 3D printing technology. The company primarily makes one and two-off components and assemblies, and this is exactly why the Devon manufacturer opted for CAM software from Open Mind Technologies. Alluding to why the company has transitioned to hyperMILL, Andrew Newcombe from Tooltech said: “We had a lot of surface finish problems and there were a lot of collisions, which you do not expect from your CAM software. That was the main problem for our business and what we were struggling with, it is also why we looked at other systems and moved to hyperMILL. We had a demonstration, and it was extremely good - and this has been the case since we implemented the software. We have witnessed much better surface finishes on our components, and we now have no collisions with our machines. This means that when components come off the machine, there is no secondary hand finishing.” Comparing hyperMILL to the previous CAM software, Andrew explained: “With hyperMILL, you have a lot more strategies to choose from and it is also very easy to change from one strategy to another. So, if one strategy isn’t the best fit - there is always another strategy to achieve the correct surface finish.” Referring to the multitude of machine tools and a vast range of cutting tools on the shop floor and how it works in harmony with the shop floor, Andrew said: “It was very easy to learn how to set up the tool libraries for our diverse range of machines on the shop floor. With entirely new software, training was a daunting prospect, but after three days of training and an additional couple of days playing around with the system - it all clicked into place. We also undertook three days of advanced training and 58

torque-expo.com

by the end of that, we were good to go! In just eight days, our business had undertaken a complete transition. During the transition and training stage, Open Mind Technologies have always been there and given us the support we needed. All of the training was done remotely, and our training hours were 10am to 4pm, so we could still get work done in the mornings.” “The jobs now come off the machines to a much higher standard than what we were getting and there is a lot less secondary work that our guys have to do before the jobs are shipped out of the door. The post-processors were another very straightforward factor. It was one of the biggest concerns we had when changing our CAM software, as we have a lot of different machines in our facility - but it was very simple and straightforward, and I cannot fault it.” Adding to this sentiment, Lance Jobe from Tooltech said: “hyperMILL has been very good with our bench work. After the blocks have come off the machine, we have found that we have a lot less deburring to do and a lot less polishing. This means manufacturing times are greatly reduced from when the component comes off the machine tool to when it gets delivered to the customer.”

// The transition over to hyperMILL has been very straightforward and it had minimum impact on our production. //

“hyperMILL is a lot faster to program than our previous software. hyperMILL is so interactive with the model, you can take a lot of the geometries straight from the model and start programming straightaway. There is no legwork at the beginning where you have to create a lot of boundaries and surfaces. The transition over to hyperMILL has been very straightforward and it had minimum impact on our production. Overall, our experience has been fantastic,” explained Lance. Concurring with this, Andrew concluded: “We are really happy with hyperMILL. We wish we bought it years ago. It has been such an easy transition.” www.tooltech.co.uk

SPOTLIGHT TOGE Dübel

CONCRETE SCREW TECHNOLOGY MATURES INTO A MULTIFUNCTIONAL FASTENING PRODUCT TOGE Dübel takes us through how its products are becoming more versatile through innovation, saving users time and money…

C

oncrete screw technology is growing out of its infancy. The pure concrete screw is increasingly becoming a multifunctional fastener. While concrete screw technology at the end of the 20th Century was designed purely for fastening in concrete, this fastener is increasingly transforming into a multi-functional or multi-substrate screw and is gradually replacing not only conventional concrete fasteners but is also conquering a range of other substrates.

// Concrete screw technology was purely for fastening in concrete, but is increasingly transforming into a multisubstrate screw. // TOGE Dübel is a pioneer in concrete screw technology and has been intensively involved in the development of concrete screws for more than 30 years. With over 600 product types, the range is reportedly one of the widest and deepest in the industry. The company produces almost exclusively at its Nuremberg site. All TOGE products are in-house developments – research and development is carried out in-house and, since September, also in the company’s own test areas in the Reinhold Würth

68

curio! innovation centre – of which TOGE Dübel is a member. Here, €75 million has been invested in the last two years and ideal test and development areas for the further development of fastening technology have been created. In addition to special screws for asphalt and aerated concrete, TOGE Dübel has a premium product with the highest load values in its range with its concrete screw TOGE TSM High Performance. The TOGE TSM High Performance has now also been approved for solid brick, sand-lime brick, perforated brick and lightweight concrete. In addition to the concrete screw, TOGE Dübel also relies on the development of screw technology in other substrates as a convenient solution for various substrates: Screw technology in drywall construction: For decades, plastic or steel hammer-in anchors were used here. Nowadays, the tedious hammering in is rarely done. The time and energy saving alternative is a small concrete screw (TOGE TSM-L) that can be used with a simple rotary screwdriver. Staff shortages and increased personnel costs are prompting contractors to make work as simple and fast as possible – a fastener that can be processed more than twice as quickly is a real help here. Screw technology in aerated concrete: Impact anchors, plastic dowels or more or less complex metal anchors can be replaced by aerated concrete screws. Here too, TOGE offers an easy and quick alternative with its aerated concrete screw TOGE TSM PB.

Screw technology for the permanent or temporary fastening of protective devices in asphalt: In the past, adhesive or bolt anchors were often used, which were inserted into a laboriously constructed concrete foundation in the asphalt. With the TOGE TSM-A asphalt screw, secure and permanent anchoring is achieved with or without composite adhesive – and without the need for a concrete foundation.

2021

EXTENDED CAPAC ITY

THREADED RODS

Screw technology for punching or shear reinforcements in structural engineering: In the past, adhesive systems were used which often had to be drilled overhead at an oblique angle. Afterwards, a composite adhesive system with mandatory curing time was inserted. Nowadays, an approved screw system (RELAST) can be inserted from the top or bottom side. This can be done without restricting the use of the bridge or building during installation – curing times are no longer necessary.

LEAD SCREWS

Screw technology for the installation of insulating material: Here too, TOGE offers a screw with approval and fire protection (TOGE TIS) replacing large-area drive-in solutions or plastic dowels. Adjustability, simple assembly and small hole depths to avoid reinforcement hits during drilling offer users considerable time and cost advantages. Screw technology for approved use in masonry: In the past, several different anchoring products had to be kept ready for fastening in masonry. With TOGE TSM High Performance, TOGE offers a product that – previously only approved for concrete – now also has approval for use in masonry.

Screw technology as a replacement for adhesive anchors for use in areas where the highest loads or reliable borehole sealing is required: Some of its competitors also introduced a combined system with concrete screw and mortar. However since 1999, TOGE’s steel and stainless steel concrete screws have had a combination approval with significant load increases, which allows the screw technology to be used with composite adhesive with an immediate load capacity (no curing times required). TOGE’s goal is to offer a fastening option that both simplifies work and saves time and therefore costs. Likewise, the aim is to be able to work on several applications and substrates at the same time with only one product. TOGE’s products are produced and developed in Germany, so delivery routes are shorter and better for the environment, saving CO2. TOGE is presenting its comprehensive range at this year’s Fastener Fair Global in Stuttgart in Hall 1, Stand 530 (for more details, turn to page 25 in this magazine).

A NEW CUSTOMER SHOWROOM FOR DRAPER New tools, new packaging and bold branding: Peter Brett tours Draper’s new Customer Showroom and finds a few surprises…

T

he first thing that struck me when I was shown into the new Visitor Centre at Draper HQ in Chandlers Ford was that someone had really got behind the striking blue and black Draper branding. It was consistent and bold – even the floor had been laid out in black and blue zones that ran between high display stands packed with all manner of products. Not every product is on display, ‘only’ 7,000 out of more than 11,000 current products. But there are enough to make you say to yourself: “I didn’t know Draper stocked those.”

// Tool buyers and users are notorious for wanting to touch, hold and preferably try before they buy. //

7,000 of Draper's products are on display in the new showrooms

70

torque-expo.com

Which, it turns out, is one of the advantages of bringing old and new customers into the Visitor Centre. Very often they spot tools that they thought were ‘no longer available’ or they find new products that would fit nicely into the product range at their shop. I had my moment – I spotted a good old-fashioned nail punch – one that does not have a slippery plastic body and a taper too big to drive a pin nail head invisibly into the timber. Tool buyers and users are notorious for wanting to touch, hold and preferably try before they buy, and my experience tells me that they are correct. Even big name brands don’t get all the ergonomics and handling right every time, which is why we need the choice and a chance to try them. The new Visitor Centre has also provided Draper with a grand opportunity to look at the space and explore some new imperatives that all businesses will have to face in the next 10 years – the Green Agenda. Draper has therefore published its Sustainability and Ethics Agenda that is far-reaching and serious about meeting its environmental objectives. In the Visitor Centre we could see some of these at work. All new products have the new Draper branding and they also have the benefit of a packaging that is

sustainable and recyclable. The days of plastic clam-style packaging are numbered, and the few products that still use plastic will either be sold on in bulk or repackaged until the whole range is up-to-date. Changes don’t end there. The heating and ventilation system in the centre is designed to distribute heat evenly and efficiently so that visitors can be comfortable and energy efficient. Yes, it does save money, and it does work so something is right. The Visitor Centre is divided into product groups and categories to make it easier to spot what you need. The Gardening section is a case in point. The branding is green and black and the products themselves are sat on a base of fake grass to draw attention to it. Going Green doesn’t have to be boring – the old adage that necessity is the mother of invention applies here. And the man largely behind the Visitor Centre, Nigel Whatley, has this to say:

Product groups are clearly grouped, with - for example the Gardening section decked out in green (and fake grass)

SHOW PREVIEW BAU

BAU IS BACK Another key international show making a welcome return in 2023 is BAU, running 17-22 April at Messe München Trade Fair Centre. Torque Magazine speaks with Exhibition Director Matthias Strauss for his views on BAU’s return…

// For the first time since 2019, BAU will be held as a physical event again. //

74

torque-expo.com

What are your expectations in terms of visitor numbers? For the first time since 2019, BAU will be held as a physical event again this year. We are very pleased to welcome the construction industry back here in Munich after this long break. Since the return of the trade fairs last spring, the events have seen a decline in visitor numbers on average. However, we hope to be able to counteract this current trend with BAU.

We hear a lot about the rising popularity of timber in construction – is this something that you hear from your exhibitors and visitors? Timber has become very popular in the building industry in recent years. This is primarily due to the fact that wood is a renewable raw material and at the same time stands for sustainable construction. However, the construction industry is currently facing supply shortages and high pricing. Therefore, we have to wait and see how the situation will develop.

74 76 78-82 SHOW PREVIEW - BAU TOR071 2023.qxp 10/02/2023 12:53 Page 2

SHOW PREVIEW BAU ...Sustainability is an increasingly important topic – is this a subject that the show will be addressing? Is it a topic that is becoming more central to the show? Sustainability plays an important role in the building sector as well as at BAU 2023. In addition to our key themes “The Challenge of Climate Change” and “Resources & Recycling”, we are also focusing on sustainability in special shows. As one of the largest sectors of the economy worldwide, the construction industry has a particular duty to address the issue of sustainability.

// The construction industry has a particular duty to address the issue of sustainability. // What would you say to any fastener and fixing companies that have never visited the show before and are considering attending? Any building tradesman who wants to succeed must be ready to face the latest challenges. BAU gives tradesmen the best overview of practical innovations. This is where global market leaders, proven SMEs and innovative newcomers present their latest products – often in hands-on demonstrations.

SHOW PREVIEW BAU BECK SHOWCASING LIGNOLOC AUTOMATION SOLUTION AT BAU > Wooden nails and robots may not commonly work together, but fastening pioneer BECK and KEHRATEC, a leading specialist in the fields of robot automation, intralogistics and process control systems, will be demonstrating the joint LIGNOLOC® pilot project at the BAU in Munich. The two companies are working on a robot-assisted system for the fully or partially automated implementation of timber construction projects, especially by pre-assembling completely glue-free and metal-free wall elements. CUSTOMISABLE SYSTEM At the show, the automation solution will be demonstrated at the BECK booth with an original KUKA robot and a wall section. In practice, the system can be adapted to the needs of the customer. At BAU one wall element will be produced per day. Once an hour another layer of boards will be attached by the robot with the LIGNOLOC® wooden nails. A FASCO® nailing head, BECK's own brand of pneumatic tools, is used for driving in the nails. No predrilling is required for the collated wooden nails.

Hall: C6 – Booth: 303

LIGNOLOC AND ROBOTICS – ADVANTAGES FOR CARPENTERS For CEO and General Manager Christian Beck, the advantages of robotics and ecological fastening technology in mass timber construction are obvious: “Small and medium-sized timber construction companies and carpenters throughout Europe should be able to manufacture metal- and glue-free mass timber wall elements themselves. “With the expansion of the LIGNOLOC ecosystem in terms of compatibility with common processing solutions, as well as the co-engineering of the flexible, digital robot platform together with KEHRATEC, the use of mass timber elements becomes more flexible and the transport distances shorter. As a final consequence, it will be cheaper for many companies to manufacture mass timber elements themselves.” Beck is sure of the benefits for the timber construction industry. www.beck-fastening.com

BOSSONG LAUNCHES NEXT GEN SUPER EPOXY RESIN, E-PLUS >

Bossong’s BAU presence will in part be to showcase its new EPlus – a new chemical anchor (bi-component styrene-free pure epoxy resin). It’s the newest version of the original Epox from the 1990s. The short name is intended to encapsulate 30 years of R&D in the chemical anchor sector. Its 100-year service life is twice the standard 50 years, which means that this resin is ideal for major works. Other of its main advantages include applicability in flooded holes tested also underwater, fire resistance up to a maximum of R24, natural ability to penetrate in holes and hollow materials thanks to the successful combination of fluidity and adherence reaching up to 2.5 metres of extrusion, no expansion or shrinking, suitable for use with masonry, wood, and concrete, in a range of temperatures that allows use also at 50°C, strong grip on smooth surfaces such as core holes. It has also picked up a good few certifications. It performs in terms of the environment, because all Bossong chemical anchors are qualified according to the LEED protocol concerning the certification of VOC content (Volatile Organic Compounds) and have obtained the highest qualification level, i.e. A+ rating, of the French regulation. The resin has obtained EOTA approval for concrete bonding in accordance with EAD 330499-01-0601 and EAD 330087-01-0601. Its aseismic performance is especially notable as it is double that of the current product and has obtained the highest C2 rating for M12 and M24. It is the jewel in the crown of this new 3:1 formula capable of reacting efficiently to significant earth movements, just as the certified aseismic Rebar rods with 12mm to 32mm diameter.

Earthquake-resistant, green and art friendly – Bossong’s new E-Plus super epoxy resin

Hall: A4 – Booth: 111

Created to meet the needs of the construction sector while also respecting the environment, offering safety and maximising structural consolidation, E-Plus is the latest step in a journey that started decades ago. Between the ‘60s and the ‘70s, the company specialised first in the production of rivets and riveting machines for concrete anchoring, then mechanic anchors and plugs. The shift to chemical anchors was made by chemist Luciano Taddei, founder of Bossong SpA Italia, and marked a decisive and fortunate change of direction. The formulation and filling of these bicomponent chemical anchors to fix metal elements in concrete and masonry structures with epoxy, polyester, and vinyl ester resins, led to the company’s worldwide success. At the start of the new millennium, the recently established EOTA certification body approved the products on a European and International scale but at the same time forced the company to align to increasingly higher standards and face competition on a wider scale. Bossong took on the new challenges by focusing on research and innovation, aware that each investment was a step towards market leadership. E-Plus, just like the Epoxy21 before it, developed following the earthquake that devastated L’Aquila in 2009 and was reportedly the first product in the world to obtain the C2 aseismic certification for fixing standard threaded rods. This opened new opportunities for the company in the world of qualified constructions, as well as a chance to operate in the art and cultural heritage sector. An additional reason of pride for the company that finds application in Italy and across the world stems from a solid base and the willingness to invest. The inauguration of a new logistics centre afforded the opportunity to totally redesign the company: inside, the warehouse is completely automated and connected using all the latest technologies, leaving more space in the main building for additional production lines, also connected using 4.0 next generation technologies and robotics. Last but not least, the 1,250 square meters of photovoltaic panels — providing almost 200,000 kWh and a power of approximately 200 kW per year — are a tangible proof of the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint; a circular economy approach that benefits the entire community. www.bossong.co.uk

KLIMAS TO SHOWCASE VAST POLAND-MADE RANGE AT BAU >

Klimas Wkręt-met is a Polish-originated manufacturer of construction fastening techniques. The company is Polish, but the Klimas Fasteners brand created by it is international. This is consistent with the company's strategy, which for several years has been increasing its expansion under the slogan #GoGlobal, not limiting itself to Europe only. Thanks to its highquality products, the highest production and service standards, and, above all, the guarantee of an uninterrupted supply chain, the company is conquering more markets, including the most demanding ones. As a manufacturer, Klimas can maintain greater independence and, despite the turbulence in global markets, punctually deliver orders to various corners of the world. The scale on which the company operates is impressive, Klimas products can be found in nearly seventy countries: from Norway to Australia. Other companies of Klimas are appearing in different regions of the world, showing that the company's global development strategy is correct. The Polish company is not hindered either by distance or cultural differences - it has found its way perfectly to the Asian market, for example, participating in significant investments and opening offices in more countries. With a product portfolio of 6,500 products including carpen-

try, ETICS insulation systems, drywall, or frame fixings. Every day the factory produces 30 million screws, 9 million plastic fasteners, and hardens 21 million screws. The two production facilities are also impressive: an area of up to 80,000 square kilometers, a warehouse with 25,000 storage spaces, and nearly 800 employees who ensure the highest production standards every day. The quality of Klimas products is confirmed not only by reference facilities from all over the world but also by ETA European Technical Approvals. With its laboratory, advanced technologies, the most modern machinery in Central and Eastern Europe, and cooperation with leading architects and constructors, Klimas is constantly improving its product range, introducing novelties such as the milling tip, which significantly speeds up the screwing process and makes the contractors' work easier. The Klimas phenomenon is that for all the huge scale of its operations, the company does not lose its family character. Founded in 1990 by Joanna and Wojciech Klimas, it has invariably remained in the hands of the owners and their children, who have been involved in the company's work from an early age. en.klimas.com

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION

Exterior woodscrews that make the grade Owlett-Jaton > Outlines the key trends in its overview of the ever-important wood screw market As the daylight hours begin to draw out, spring is not all that far away. With spring comes favourable weather, and in turn, the opportunity once again to start thinking about and undertaking those outdoor projects. Garden renovations, outdoor maintenance and small-large scale construction projects can begin to start. Many of these types of projects will inevitably require screws to successfully carry them out. It is imperative to ensure that the right screw is used for every project. A screw that is designed for outdoor projects can be used for indoor use (although not ideal, often due to cost), but the same cannot be said for screws designed for indoor projects to be used outdoors. Overlooking this fact on an outdoor project could result in the screws corroding, leading to them weakening and ultimately failing; such failure can lead to unnecessary damage and an increase in cost to rectify. Historically, there was little choice in screws for outdoor projects. Self-colour steel woodscrews were originally used, and often painted afterwards to protect/prolong the screw. Bright zinc-plated screws were introduced, and although these offered some form of corrosion resistance they were still far from perfect. This plating provided little resistance to corrosion and has therefore always been better suited for indoor projects. Later, zinc and yellow-plated chippy screws were introduced. Applied in the same way as bright zinc plating, it offers a higher level of corrosion resistance with an extra layer of passivate, but the screws would still begin to corrode and fail in a relatively short time. With advances in plating technology, there is now a multitude of finishes which have been designed for outdoor applications. But the choice of finish is just one factor to consider when deciding which screws to use for a particular outdoor project. Material, drive, head style, thread type, size and not overlooking the actual type of project, can all be considered, too. Owlett-Jaton supplies a range of external grade woodscrews specifically manufactured to withstand extreme weather, providing a strong and durable fixing. Whilst stainless steel woodscrews are ideal for outdoor applications, they are noticeably more expensive. Corrosion-resistant finishes applied to a steel screw make them economically viable compared to stainless steel. The Vortex® exterior high-performance woodscrew offers exceptional performance when used externally. It offers the same technologically advanced screw as the standard Vortex, but with a Magsho Silver organic coating designed to offer Corrosion-resistant finishes applied to a steel screw make them more economically viable compared to stainless steel

superior resistance to corrosion. These screws are rated at 1,000 – hour salt spray test and are also ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) timber resistant. Designed to be used in softwood and hardwood the multi-purpose screw is ideal for a range of external applications, including decking, roofing and fencing. The recessed double countersunk head reduces the chance of the head shearing, ensuring product reliability and has sharp milling ribs which enable self-countersinking, helping reduce time and increase efficiency. The sharp, wide and deep thread, featuring ‘Saw Fix’ serrated thread technology, enables the screw to power through timber quickly and easily. The majority of Vortex exterior power screw sizes also include an oblique-angle sharp gash point, improving initial bite into the timber and all sizes are fully CE compliant. Designed to resist corrosion, Unifix decking screws are manufactured with a green organic coating which provides greater weather resistance, making them the perfect choice for fixing deck boards to timber joists. The countersunk head offers a flush finish once the screw is in place. Utilising the same corrosion-resistant coating as the decking screws, the Timberdrive range is a popular choice for heavy-duty timber fixings. An exceptional screw for outdoor fixing, its heattreated shank offers formidable strength. The hexagon drive offers tremendous torque and should be applied with a power tool. Their capability removes the need to use bright zinc-plated cup square hexagon which may have been traditionally used, and are easier and quicker to apply.

Market insight and trends The most popular drive type on woodscrews is cross recessed, but there is a shift towards a Torx® drive – a six-lobed starshaped pattern. Torx drive offers more grip, which in turn reduces cam-out, where the screwdriver loses grip and spins out, often causing damage to the head of the screw. The consequence of this is that it often results in the screw becoming difficult to tighten and remove. The Torx drive design offers a better drive, resulting in a reduction in battery consumption, meaning more screws can be applied per battery charge. It also offers quicker installation, saving time. www.owlett-jaton.com

Perry Woodscrews February 2023 marks the second-year anniversary for a key product within the Perry Group, TENZ from Perry is the professional and hi-performance woodscrew with renowned Tenz Stairs technology. Since the release, they have swept into timber merchants across the UK and have become a staple product for many of Perry’s customers. The group said that the timing of the initial launch helped with its success. Marketing Director Steve Perry says: “We were certainly fortunate to launch the range at a key time when many other more established brands were having great difficulty sourcing their fixings. This shortage certainly was a large factor in their initial success, however there is no doubt that their popularity and demand has been due to the repeat business of converted consumers and this only comes through the proven performance of the product.” “It’s like black magic” as stated by a customer, and “In the fencing trade, best screws I have used yet,” from an independent tradesman.

What makes it so special? The key factor that “drives” the product to perform unlike any other screw on the UK market is the Stairs Thread Technology that the Perry Group exclusively licence from TENZ. The stairs specifically create a smaller friction area, which significantly reduces the screwing-in resistance. The alternating loading and unloading creates a unique oscillating screwing-in movement which brings amazing benefits on several levels: Minimal physical effort, reduced energy input and a tighter bond between wood and screw. To complement the hi-performance range of Tenz from Perry woodscrews, the firm recently released a range of highly competitive, multipurpose screws, The Perry Pro range. Featuring Grip Fit™ technology and encompasses not only boxed stock, but also assorted attaché cases and handy DIY packs in exclusive plastic free, eco-friendly packaging. The firm await further developments to the range with the arrival of new finishes coming in May this year. www.tenzfromperry.co.uk

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION WOOD, CHIPBOARD & DECKING SCREWS

Optimaxx and the growing demand for quality decking Forged from decades of experience in the fixings industry, Optimaxx produces a range of Extreme Performance Decking Screws and more. Here, the company argues why screws shouldn’t be an afterthought when it comes to decking, and how environmental considerations impact wood screw sales around the world...

s the daylight hours begin to draw out, spring is not all that far away. With spring comes favourable weather, and in turn, the opportunity once again to start thinking about and undertaking those outdoor projects. Garden renovations, outdoor maintenance and small-large scale construction projects can begin to start. From Optimaxx’s inception, we set out to produce the best wood screw in the world. In our eyes, we have more than exceeded that goal. While our wood screws remain the core of the Optimaxx product range, the team has since taken the unique combination of features that have made them so popular and applied them to other areas of the fixing industry. In 2016, Optimaxx saw a gap in the market that needed filling so we expanded our product portfolio by bringing a new decking screw to the scene. Decking has been a continuously growing business globally, with demand steadily climbing around the world. This trend has only increased in recent years with Optimaxx experiencing steady growth. Decking is a popular component of the modern home, and the demand for high-quality housing developments is huge in the current landscape. Also, one of the key takeaways from the Covid-19 pandemic was that people had a renewed interest in remodeling and home improvement. The materials and labour costs of construction will reach costs in the region of £10,000-£20,000. When investing in a decking project, customers will often be happy to sink their funds into good-quality timber and wood coatings. However, some overlook the importance of pairing this with equally good screws with adequate corrosion protection. Before Optimaxx came to the decking market, many of the most purchased fixings available were simple screws and nails. Manufacturers would often just provide a green paint overlay

A

88

torque-expo.com

to these fixings, with no added protection, but present them as being built for the outdoors.

Optimaxx Decking Screws When we designed our decking screw, the aim was to apply all the features of our successful wood screws to the new fixing while giving it the highest level of corrosion protection that we could. Transferring Optimaxx’s saw tooth formation, the distinctive slash, and the razor-sharp point from our wood screw was a relatively simple process. However, Optimaxx Wood Screws are equipped with a unique 24-groove countersink under the head, which we had difficulty implementing. Decking screws need to be designed with smaller heads, allowing them to fit nicely within the grooves of decking boards. As a result, we had to re-evaluate the feature and found that the smaller head size would only require a 14-groove countersink and be equally as effective. Once we had a working design that was up to the standard set by our wood screws, it was then time for the coating. A manufacturer can engineer the best screw or fastener in the world and load it with benefits for the consumer. However, without adequate protection, the fixing will begin to corrode. An uncoated steel fixing that is suffering from rust and oxidation will cause nail rot in even the highest quality timber. While there are solutions that work to undo the wood rot, it is better to stop this before it happens especially if building a deck from expensive timber. The testing process In order to ensure that exterior fixings will be fit for purpose and the perils of the outside world, they need to go through a salt spray test. This process is an intensive corrosion test that

involves the product being intensely sprayed with a saltwater solution over a long period of time. The test gives an accelerated method of simulating the kind of pressure that long-term exposure to the outside will exert on them. Following being exposed to the saltwater mist, the fixing may or may not begin to show signs of oxidation. Our decking screws are equipped with our unique Maxxtect Exterior Corrosion Protection. They were subjected to an extensive 2,000-plus hour salt spray test and, upon completion, they did not show a sign of corrosion. That is why we confidently offer a lifetime guarantee on Optimaxx Decking Screws. Not only will they not begin to corrode, but they will also far exceed the lifespan of the timber itself.

Considerations for the global market The importance of good corrosion defences like Optimaxx’s unique Maxxtect Coating is that it grants the freedom to expand internationally without the need for redevelopment. Every market has its own requirements and climate; therefore, corrosion will occur in different ways and for different reasons. Environmental factors need to be considered, high humidity settings with high amounts of water vapour in the air will

cause steel to rust more quickly than in dryer climates. In addition, a country’s physical geography may govern both the building habits of its citizens and how much environmental stress may be put on the fixings used. For example, Optimaxx has experienced growing success in New Zealand, a country with a rather unique geography compared to many. The narrower landmass has resulted in a large amount of decking being built along the coastline. The high salt content of seawater causes higher rates of corrosion; this, therefore, provides a much different challenge to that of a landlocked nation. Performance and longevity When it comes to exterior fixings, the key to success lies in both performance and longevity. In an industry in which the demand for high-quality decking products is on the rise, providing a product that can outperform and outlast the competition has never been more important. The detrimental effect that poorly protected or uncoated fixings will have on a project may not reveal themselves immediately. www.optimaxx.co.uk

market BUSINESS UP-TICKS BELIE COST-OF-LIVING CRISIS

While the market is not currently operating at its optimum level, many companies are recording extremely positive results, suggesting the situation is not as straightforwardly negative as it would first appear. BHETA explains all…

Cost-of-living crisis’ is a very familiar phrase at the moment at every level of reporting and discussion. But, says Will Jones, Chief Operating Officer of BHETA, the trade association which represents many of the home improvement, DIY, garden, and homewares suppliers in the UK, it is an oversimplification of the much more complicated picture evident in many areas of industry including our own. “Fortunately,” continues Jones, “thanks to BHETA’s Quarterly Market Report – which centres on category reporting from GlobalData as well as information from a wide range of published sources, and then combines that with real-time comments from leading suppliers and retailers – that complex picture is something the BHETA team can not only interpret, but also provide regular advice upon.” From a tools and fixings perspective, the most recent BHETA Quarterly Market Report – which is available free to BHETA supplier members four times a year, and to retailers in the sector – reveals the complexity of current trading, but with an overall feeling of cautious optimism for the coming year. Joseph Robinson, Consulting Director at GlobalData, says: “The DIY category fell back in the second half of 2022, owing both to the significant investment many have already made in their homes through the pandemic…” Unsurprisingly therefore, following the record highs of 2021,

92

torque-expo.com

this last year has been tougher for many in the home related retail sector. The global energy crisis, war and inflation have made converting customer interest into sales that much more difficult – but not impossible. Recent positive performances from both retailers and suppliers over autumn and winter bear this out and it is a fact that there are categories in growth, both in terms of sales and consumer Google searches. All things that can be linked to energy saving such as loft insulation, draught excluders, LED bulbs are performing well. Google searches for all things home remain up compared to 2019, and there are many categories showing growth such as pipe cutters, solar panels, water butts, LED bulbs, loft insulation and draught excluders. The real-time situation is that while there is less disposable income to spend, there are now more people interested in these categories than pre-pandemic. “It is all about improving homes and making life better, and suppliers and retailers are seen to have a role to play in helping people create better safer places to live,” comments Jones. BHETA supplier members are saying much the same. Jason Burns, Managing Director of Shurtape, says: “Despite the media gloom, Shurtape traded really well in 2022 and we had a fantastic fourth quarter. January has seen a slower start, but it’s very early days and our order book is strong. We expect growth

market // Consumers are expecting a frictionless retail experience – and it is the supplier’s and retailer’s job to meet those needs. //

again this year with a stronger second half. Being able to predict trends like that is one of the reasons we find the BHETA market report useful and recommend it to retailers and suppliers alike.” So, it is not so surprising that retail sales values, unadjusted for price changes, rose by 0.5% in November 2022, following a rise of 1.7% in October 2022. Certainly, there are retailers bearing out this picture, with Topps Tiles reporting sales growth of 10.2% in the 13 weeks to 31 December 2022, and Grafton Group with revenue up by 9.1% to £2.30 billion in 2022. Jones added: “Of course, it’s true to say that value was a huge motivator during this period. Kantar market share data for the period covering Christmas showed that inflation drove up customer spend by £1.1bn but pushed volumes down by 1%. Customers also continue to prioritise ease and so, for retailers, making it as convenient as possible for customers to shop needs to remain a priority. Three in four consumers are looking for home improvement projects to be faster and more affordable, while also expecting a frictionless retail experience – and it is the supplier’s and retailer’s job to meet those needs.”

There are other factors influencing the current picture: • Supply chain. Marked availability improvements across general merchandise thanks to positive changes in supply chain. • Omnichannel offers winning out as a combination of the best in online and bricks-and-mortar. Click and collect was a key appeal. • Credit. The latest consumer credit data from the Bank of England, shows card borrowing at its highest level in almost two decades. And the use of buy now, pay later schemes also reached record highs, according to Equifax. “In conclusion,” says Jones, “2023 is likely to hold significant challenges, but predictions include nothing like the scale of GDP declines seen in previous recessions – which should still give suppliers and retailers conditions in which they can make money – albeit growth will be harder to achieve. “There are still many positives in the wider economy: unemployment remains low; petrol prices are coming down and inflation is likely to have peaked; the volume of construction in recent months has hit record highs; and the pound has been strengthening since September. Many BHETA members report an up-tick in business. Long may that continue into 2023!”

PEOPLE NEWS > EXTRA

Draper Tools announces new CEO Matt Sheen (right) joins family firm after MD role at Metabo & Hikoki…

D

raper Tools has revealed its new CEO, Matt Sheen. Sheen will oversee the continuing growth and expansion of the 104 year-old tool firm. The new appointment is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the business as it builds for the future. Matt Sheen is very well placed to take up the role, having originally begun his career in the tool industry at Draper in the sales team more than 28 years ago. Since then, he has built up a wealth of industry experience, including most recently at Metabo and Hikoki, where he was Managing Director. “It’s a great honour to be with Draper Tools, and as the new CEO,” said Sheen. “Draper is a company which has a great heritage and a strong team, with investment in additional key personnel in recent times, especially since the Covid pandemic. The company is still very much family orientated, with them supporting the direction and focus of the business.” Originally established in 1919 by Bert Draper, Draper Tools is still family-owned and run today by the third and fourth

generation of the Draper family. The business remains as committed to growth as ever, with a state-of-the-art new warehouse build currently underway at its Hampshire headquarters. The international operations are also expanding, with the company now exporting to over 70 countries worldwide. Matt Sheen takes over the reins from Graham Wade, who retires after a successful 38 years at Draper Tools. In a joint family statement John, Tom and Joe Draper commented: “While we are sad to lose Graham, who is like one of the family to us, we are so excited to welcome Matt to the team. We know he’ll be a real asset to the business and look forward to working closely with him as he leads Draper into its next chapter. Recent years have seen a great deal of innovation and modernisation here and we’re not slowing down, with Matt on board we know we’re in a strong position to continue our plans for growth and expansion.” There’s more on Draper Tools on page 70.
