BUILDING BONANZA
Governments get a lot of flak (justly so in many cases), but we can at least be grateful that they understand the need to build a lot of things.
National and international targets to cut emissions mean we’re going to need to make a lot of new electric vehicles to replace the dominant petrol and diesel automotives that have fuelled the last century.
Energy is also in sharp focus, driven by increased awareness of the dangers of over relying on sources that turn out to be a lot less stable in times of disruption and, regrettably, war. And environmental concerns have helped push a lot of those energy conversations towards renewables, including wind turbines and solar panels.
For those living in the UK at least, we hear a lot about the pressing need to drastically ramp up house building and in nations unlucky enough to be hit by war, considerable construction projects are already underway, in some case featuring a lot of modular construction.
As for producing consumer goods… that’s likely not such a vibrant space to be in right now. I’ve heard some horror stories about Far East factories shutting down in lieu of orders and using manufacturing floor space for storage of finished products while waiting for demand to return. I’ve also heard worse stories of wilful destruction of finished product that will likely be ‘out of date’ when orders finally come in…
But back to those big infrastructure projects – vast amounts of fasteners will be required with quality tools to put them all in place, which is one positive certainty in an age where disruption has become normal.
Jonathon Harker Editor jonathon@torque-expo.comBOMET’S BACK IN THE UK
Bodegraven Metaal NV has opened a new entity in the UK again to supply threaded bar to customers in the nation.
“We are pleased to announce that Bomet UK is launched and ready to meet your demand. After closing the production unit in Willenhall in 2007, Bodegraven Metaal once again has a branch in the West Midlands.”
Challenges around customs due to the UK’s withdrawal from the EU had hampered supply from Bomet to the UK, however the new UK entity has removed all those obstacles.
“Since Brexit, transport costs to the UK have risen enormously, due to the extra import and export costs, but also due
to the disappearance of many transporters who, due to the known startup problems, chose not to ship to the UK anymore. Also many UK customers did not have the experience to clear goods. This now becomes much easier as we ship our threaded rods DIN9761 to Bomet UK and do the customs clearance, which means that customers can now buy their goods from an English supplier, Bomet UK, saving them a great deal of cost and time.
“Bomet UK works together with Paul Ponsonby Warehouse, located on the M6 north of Birmingham, to handle your orders. Feel free to send your inquiry to Sales.UK@bomet.com”

ANOOSHEH OSKOUIAN SHIP & SHORE ENVIRONMENTAL INC.
Working in the environmental engineering industry is a source of pride for Anoosheh Oskouian, President and CEO of Ship & Shore Environmental, Inc. She explains why entering STEM fields is important for women and how the fastener industry can improve its environmental credentials in this Women in Fasteners interview.
How did you get into the industry?
It began with my interest in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as a young girl. I was eager to learn about how things worked, so naturally, I was drawn to formulas that revealed to me that there are solutions to all equations and problems.
It is not always easy for girls to enter the fields of STEM, but it is crucial for our society's progress and advancement.
I am grateful that I also had supportive parents, teachers, and mentors who encouraged me to pursue my interest in this field. This enabled me to defy the norms we saw back then, and still see today. Their encouragement made it possible for me to leave my home country of Iran at a young age to study in the US, where I eventually received my bachelors in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado.
What does your day-to-day job involve?
As the President and CEO of an environmental engineering company, I have a significant responsibility to lead and manage my organisation to achieve its goals and objectives. My daytoday responsibilities involve a wide range of activities that are critical to the success of the company. I oversee all departments including engineering and project teams, sales and marketing, and our overall operations. I communicate directly with many of our clients and stakeholders, as well as conduct site visits and assessments.
As the leader of this company, I am responsible for building and managing a highperforming team. This includes recruiting and retaining top talent, providing regular feedback and performance evaluations, and fostering a positive and productive work environment. It is very important to me to be able to provide opportunities for professional development and growth, while also ensuring that my employees are motivated and engaged.
As a CEO, I am responsible for managing the financial health of this company. This includes developing and monitoring budgets, forecasting revenue and expenses, and making strategic decisions to ensure the longterm viability of the company.
Finally, as the leader of an environmental engineering company, I have a unique responsibility to be a steward of the environment. This means ensuring that the company operates in a sustainable and responsible manner, reducing its environmental footprint and minimising negative impacts on the natural world.
Tell us more about Ship & Shore Environmental Inc?
Ship & Shore Environmental, Inc. is a Long Beach, Californiabased, womanowned, certified company specialising in air pollution capture and control systems for industrial applications. Ship & Shore helps major manufacturers meet Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) abatement challenges by providing customised, energy efficient air pollution abatement systems for various industries, resulting in improved operational efficiency and tailored “green” solutions.
Since 2000, Ship & Shore has been prepared to handle and advise on the full spectrum of environmental needs with its complete array of engineering and manufacturing capabilities and global offices around the U.S., Canada, Europe, India, and China. The Ship & Shore Technical Engineering Team has custom designed tailored solutions for clients throughout the world.
How can Ship & Shore Environmental Inc help those in the fastener industry?
As an environmental engineering company that specialises in Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTOs) as well as various
other custom and highly innovative air pollution control systems, our expertise can be of significant benefit to those in the fastener industry. Fastener manufacturing processes often release emissions, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), into the air. These emissions can be harmful to human health and the environment.
RTOs can effectively remove these emissions by using a hightemperature process to combust the pollutants and convert them into harmless byproducts such as water and carbon dioxide. This not only helps to protect the environment but also enables the fastener industry to comply with local and national emissions regulations. We can provide customised RTO solutions to meet the specific needs and requirements of each fastener manufacturer, helping them to reduce their environmental impact and improve their overall sustainability.
Sustainability has arguably been focused more on fastener wholesalers/importers rather than fastener manufacturers, but Ship & Shore can help at that manufacturer/ producer level?
We have the potential to greatly benefit those in the fastener industry, including levelling out the focus on sustainability between manufacturers/producers of fasteners, as opposed to wholesalers/importers.
With our expertise in designing and installing RTOs, our customised solutions meet fastener manufacturers specific needs, helping them to improve their environmental performance, reduce operational costs, and enhance their reputation as socially responsible businesses.
What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and company since you started?
The air pollution control industry has undergone significant changes over the past several decades in response to growing public awareness of the health and environmental impacts of air pollution. One of the biggest changes has been the shift towards more stringent regulations and standards for air quality. In many countries, emissions limits for industrial facilities and vehicles have been significantly reduced, leading to the development of new technologies and processes for controlling air pollution.
Another significant change has been the adoption of cleaner energy sources, such as renewables and natural gas, which have lower emissions than traditional fossil fuels. In addition, there has been an increasing focus on monitoring and reporting air pollution levels, with the development of advanced sensors and data analysis tools to provide realtime information about air quality. These changes have helped to improve air quality in many parts of the world, but there is still much work to be done to address the ongoing challenges of air pollution.
// I am grateful that I also had supportive parents, teachers, and mentors who encouraged me to pursue my interest in this field. This enabled me to defy the norms we saw back then, and still see today. //
Are climate goals becoming a bigger priority for many businesses? If so, why?
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition that the threat of climate change poses significant risks to our society and economy. As a result, businesses are increasingly recognising the need to take action to address this global challenge through awareness and best practices.
Many companies are setting ambitious climate goals, such as committing to netzero emissions or transitioning to renewable energy sources, to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to the effort to mitigate climate change. This is not just driven by a sense of corporate social responsibility, but also by the increasing demand from customers, investors, and employees for sustainable practices.
By taking concrete steps towards achieving these goals, businesses can not only reduce their environmental impact, but also improve their bottom line by becoming more efficient, resilient, and innovative in a rapidly changing world.
Your company has expanded the industries it serves, are there plans to move into other areas as well?
We always aim to expand into other industries in order to diversify and grow our reach, especially because we know that air pollution is a global problem that requires innovative solutions. To achieve this goal, we continuously look to identify potential opportunities through market research and analysis. We leverage our core competencies and existing resources to explore industries that have synergies with our current business model and develop strategic plans for expansion into those industries.
Currently, we are expanding into the sectors of mitigating pollution caused by oceangoing vessels at various shipping ports, as well as the pollution caused by manufacturing electric vehicles and batteries.
Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far?
There are three highlights I would like to mention.
Watching myself grow from being a project engineer to a project manager at an EPC company. Working with this organisation was very pivotal to my career, and I am proud to say that the company is now a client of mine.
Watching the transformation of my company from what it was prior to my acquisition, a sheet metal company, to what it is today – an environmental engineering company that custom designs, engineers, and builds clean air solutions which clean the air we all breathe. Watching my team grow from 10 people to a global corporation. I am also proud to say many of those that started with me in the early days are still with me today.
I take pride in the important work that we do. Knowing that the projects we work hard on everyday contributes to cleaning the air we all breathe is a highlight within itself.
What is your favourite thing about working in this sector?
Working in the environmental industry can be a highly rewarding and fulfilling career path. Some of the highlights of this line of work include the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on public health and the environment, as air pollution can have serious negative effects on both.
In addition, the field of environmental engineering is constantly evolving, with new technologies and techniques emerging all the time. This provides a dynamic and intellectually stimulating work environment, where individuals are constantly challenged to come up with creative and innovative solutions. Finally, the work can be highly collaborative, as environmental engineers often work in interdisciplinary teams with scientists, policymakers, and community stakeholders to address air pollution at both the local, federal, and global levels.
What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in engineering, manufacturing or environmental management sectors?
There are several actions that can be taken to encourage more women to get involved in these sectors. First and foremost, it is important to create a welcoming and inclusive culture in these fields that promotes diversity and equity. This can be achieved by providing mentorship and networking opportunities, establishing affinity groups, and offering targeted training and development programs for women.
Additionally, educational institutions and employers can work together to highlight successful women in these fields and provide outreach programs to younger girls to spark interest in STEM subjects.
Finally, it is important to address systemic biases that may discourage or exclude women from pursuing careers in these sectors, such as gender pay gaps or lack of flexible work arrangements. By taking these steps, we can encourage more women to pursue careers in engineering, manufacturing, and environmental management and promote a more diverse and inclusive workforce in these critical fields.
Any final thoughts?
I will share with you two important mottos that I live by:
Who else, what else, where else, and how else? What this means is that it is important to constantly think about the interconnectedness of everything, think larger about the influence one can have, and keep an open mind about how the solutions we create can be applied in different ways, or to industries.
Never give up, and never take no for an answer. You may be rejected 100 times before you get that first opportunity, but it is up to you to pick yourself back up and try again because that first opportunity is out there. There is an abundance of opportunities out in the world, but only those who really believe in them will find them, take them, or create them.

Fastener Fair Global was hailed a success as visitors descended on Stuttgart to discover the latest innovations and connect with other industry professionals. We hear from organisers and exhibitors, Optimas Solutions, DÖRKEN and TR Fastenings in our review of proceedings.
Optimas Forge New Partnerships
Fresh from an inaugural attendance, Optimas OE Solutions have reported on the many great successes at this year’s Fastener Fair Global in Stuttgart.
With thousands of visitors passing by the stand every day, Optimas Solutions’ attendance at the exhibition was highly rewarding. Representatives from Optimas’ UK, Germany, France, India and America teams came together to meet with numerous customers and suppliers, enhancing existing relationships and forging new ones.
and minimise their supply chain risk. Coldforming is also a highly reproducible and sustainable manufacturing process that produces minimal material waste, therefore allowing Optimas' partners to meet their sustainability targets.
For three days the company's stand was a veritable hive of activity but far from being job done, the team now focus their attentions on further progressing these conversations and cementing new deals and relationships.
Mike Tuffy, CEO, International, said: “We had a fantastic week at Fastener Fair Global – there were thousands of people coming through the trade show and a huge amount stopping by our stand. We’ve met lots of old friends and made lots of new ones. Thank you to our customers who spent time with us and our supply partners – it was great to see everyone.”
Optimas are renowned for their US and UK manufacturing capabilities, specifically through coldforming. This process has over 150 years of history, but the team have proved its suitability in producing many standard and engineered parts for today’s complex production requirements.
The team engaged in multiple fruitful discussions about how onshoring and nearshoring their fastener supply from Optimas can allow manufacturers to lower their carbon footprint
For Optimas, however, beyond the great work carried out by the team, the unlikely star of the show was a particular item of merchandise an Optimas branded stress ball soon caught the attention of many attendees with one guest labelling it “the prize of the event”. These little stars were captured by many a lens and could be found scattered from Halls 1 – 7.
For more than one reason, the event was an outstanding success and facilitated a number of very productive discussions for Optimas, and the team are now looking forward to returning to the exhibition in 2025.

DÖRKEN draws positive conclusion
Fastener Fair Global again proved impressively this year that it is the international platform for manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors and suppliers of fastening and fixing technology. Almost 1,000 companies from the industry presented their products, machines, tools and related services at the fair, including DÖRKEN, manufacturer of zinc flake systems for corrosion protection.
At the DÖRKEN stand, the experts, including the Key Account Managers René Rother and Klaus Gradtke, held interesting discussions with visitors who were informed about the latest developments in the field of corrosion protection. DÖRKEN presented advanced technologies and innovations that make a significant contribution to the protection of surfaces and materials. One highlight was the new topcoat DELTAPROTEKT® TC 502 GZ. The product is a hybrid topcoat with excellent friction coefficient properties for use on metric components. It provides a very narrow friction coefficient window, is free of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and has a silver finish.
The success story of the cooperation with the company Peiner Umformtechnik, a supplier of fasteners for wind turbines, also attracted the attention of visitors. For this project, hotdip galvanised bolt sets were provided with an additional top coat to keep the friction values stable regardless of weather conditions – a solution that has proven itself with several million sets installed.
Another big topic at the fair was the partnership between DÖRKEN, EJOT and WMV. The three companies came together in search of a new coating option for micro screws, which the company EJOT manufactures. WMV was involved in this
project as a specialist for surface coating plants, DÖRKEN as a supplier of componentspecific lacquer. Together, after years of work, they managed to develop an innovative coating process for small parts. A video about this collaboration was on display at the DÖRKEN stand, and was also the subject of numerous conversations.
“We were very pleased to finally be back at Fastener Fair Global after four years,” said Christos Tselebidis, Vice President Sales Industrial Coatings. “For us at DÖRKEN, the fair was exceptionally good. From the preparation to the last minute, everything worked flawlessly. But most important were all the interesting and insightful conversations we had with current and potentially new partners.”
For DÖRKEN, the event was a great success overall. The fair provided an excellent opportunity to talk about new as well as proven solutions and to exchange ideas with other companies and experts.

TR Fastenings celebrate 50 years
The TR Fastenings team was delighted to be back exhibiting at Fastener Fair Global. This is a special year for TR, a Trifast plc Group Company, as it celebrates its 50th Anniversary and the whole team was there to mark the special occasion.
The TR stand carried a 50th golden theme to acknowledge this major milestone and the design and layout received many compliments from visitors. TR paid extra attention to comfort and it was designed to have dedicated seating areas which facilitated more indepth discussions facetoface with customers, and on numerous occasions, the team were so busy that every seat was filled.
The two large TV screens showcased how fasteners are made from wire through to the completed product, explaining the different processes including heat treatment and finishings. These videos were produced inhouse for training purposes for both staff and customers and included animations illustrating where TR products are used. These created a lot of interest and are available in the media library on the TR website.
This show was very important to the TR team, who were keen to meet up with the 35 Master Distributors located throughout mainland Europe and thank them for their support in distributing proprietary products including Hank SelfClinch parts, Plastic and Rubber commodities and Fasteners for Plastic. There was interest shown too in TR’s recently expanded manufacturing site TR VIC in Italy.
Managing Brexit to ensure that there were no supply issues, necessitated opening a central warehouse hub in Verl, Germany. This is close to the TR Kuhlmann site, and TR Kuhlmann Managing Director, Peter Henning oversaw this successful project. He enhanced his Sales Team to manage the increased business and they continue to work with TR’s distributor team in the UK, which has long term relationships with many of these Master Distributors.
To thank them for their support, a 50th dinner celebration for 50 people was held during one of the evenings. TR Board
members attended and Adam John, European Distribution Sales Manager hosted the event. John said: “It was amazing to be able to meet so many of our Distributors in one place and to thank them personally. Some of the conversations over dinner really cemented future opportunities.”
Traditionally, this exhibition has been a distributor show and the team was very pleased to see highprofile OEMs attending, in particular from the automotive sector. TR had been extensively advertising the fact that it was attending and that certainly boosted visits to the stand, scanning more than 350 visitors, securing new business wins and forging new relationships.
Scott Mac Meekin, Interim CEO of Trifast and Dan Jack, Chief Operating Officer supported the team on the stand, and they had a number of highprofile meetings with both vendors and customers. It proved to be an exceptionally great place to network which has not been possible during the last few years.
John Dick, Group Supply Chain Director, and his team had booked a conference room on the mezzanine, where they held supplier meetings during the show which proved to be a very productive and effective use of their time. John said, “This venue enabled us to have personal meetings with key vendors which proved to be very beneficial. This cut down what would have been many weeks of travel and cost to meet so many people. We will certainly be utilising this facility again.”
He added: “As ever the exhibition was very well organised, and we are booking space for 2025. The exhibition staff were very supportive and visited us several times a day to ensure that we had everything that we needed. Glenda Roberts, Trifast Global Projects and Marketing Director, said, “We had a very productive exhibition, and we were delighted with the quality of the footfall. It was good to be back and well worth the investment in time and money!” www.trfastenings.com

Demand, inflation & stock levels
Owlett-Jaton CEO Ian Doherty shares his views on the common challenges facing the fastener distribution market…
Irecently attended the Fastener Fair in Stuttgart, it was refreshing to see it so well attended and with the lifting of travel restrictions in China, a record number of exhibitors. It truly feels as if the Covid pandemic is behind us and business should be back to normal – whatever normal is!
Talking to many colleagues from across Europe, it seemed that, to a greater or lesser degree, there were a number of common themes in all markets; stock levels remain high, demand is muted with inflation being a challenge in most markets. The impact of the war in Ukraine was being felt directly with disruptions of supply from Ukraine and with sanctions closing the Russian market. Indirectly, the war has had worldwide effects on energy prices and the global economy.
The long shadows cast by the war in Ukraine bring one to consider the geopolitical risks in other areas. The longrunning tension between China and Taiwan is well known. I suspect that the united stand in Western countries against Russia in the Ukraine war has surprised many observers as to how well it has stood up. Those who expected the response to fragment have, to date, been proven wrong and this resolve is undoubtedly being noted in Beijing and may well dampen the prospect of tension turning to war.
The Spratly Islands in the South China Sea are another area of tension, with sovereignty claims being made by China, the Philippines, Tawan, Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei – pretty much a full house of major fastener producers and a major shipping lane for vessels from the Far East to Europe.
In spite of these dark clouds of war and tension, the economic prospects do seem to be less gloomy than just a few months ago and the general outlook in the industry seems quite positive. We may not be back to boom times, but it does seem that we have avoided a slump and that the new normal will be a positive place to be.

GROWERMETAL’S REBRANDING INSPIRES NEW FASTENING SOLUTIONS
A number of key new product launches from the Growermetal branded product family showcase how the R&D investor has evolved. From Grower TenKeep® to the awarded Grower SpheraTech®, from the digital technology of Grower Detecto® to the improved safety of Grower Reaction®…
After more than 70 years, Growermetal has continued renewing its identity while maintaining its core focus on the wide washers portfolio and on improving the efficiency of customer’s applications, through reliable fastening systems.
The Italian company has been evolving its approach to the market, which is going to be not only as “the manufacturer of a wide range of washers, but also a provider of exclusive and advanced fastening solutions”.
Paolo Cattaneo, Growermetal’s CEO, explains: “The internal rebranding does not only concern our image, but also involves the creation of increasingly innovative technologies, partnerships and projects in line with our vision – without forgetting that our core business is and always will be the production of washers, stamped parts with high efficiency and quality.”
But how did this evolution begin? From its foundation in 1950 to present day, Growermetal has organised the business so that it manages its production processes completely inhouse, including tool design and production, manufacturing, quality controls, heat treatments, coatings, sorting, laboratories and storage. “This system allows us to provide an ontime delivery service, minimising stops in production and maintaining the highest quality and precision. We have resources, technology and a talented team, then at some point we started thinking: why do we not create exclusive product lines and seize new opportunities for ourselves and our customers? That’s how we started to shape our family of solutions.”

A branded range for expanded possibilities
Gradually, the expanded range of stamped parts, standard and special washers has been joined by the Growermetalbranded line which now features many designs and solutions. In addition to flagship products such as Grower TenKeep®, a safety washer with surfaces of knurls of different geometries, the R&D team has developed a number of new solutions from the company, including smart designs with integrated digital technologies.
This is the case of Grower Detecto®, a smart sensor washer for bolt monitoring, featuring a smart sensor embedded in its structure. This system, previewed at Fastener Fair Global in March, enables realtime detection of bolt loosening through an Electrical Mechanical Impedance method. “Our goal is to allow operators to monitor the structure and the bolted joints with no need of manual inspections. So, it is possible to increase safety and efficiency, with minimal downtime and maximum costeffectiveness,” Cattaneo explains.
Fastener Fair Global 2023 also saw the launch of Grower Reaction®, a fastening system that provides a fully concentric dispersion of the reaction torque around and underneath the nut or bolt head to be tightened or loosened. “When used as a system in combination with Grower TenKeep®, Grower Reaction® eliminates the need of a reaction arm to generate the desired bolt preload. This, coupled with the absence of pinchpoints, maximises safety and requires less personnel than traditional bolting practices.”
Grower SpheraTech awarded at Route to Fastener Innovation
If the trade fair in Stuttgart was useful to verify the market interest in the new fastening solutions, it was also the stage of another important achievement: “On this occasion our Grower SpheraTech® washer placed second among many participants, in the Route to Fastener Innovation competition. This result makes us very proud, and we have to thank the whole team and in particular the R&D department to make it possible.”
Launched in 2022, Grower SpheraTech® is a preassembled set that combines a spherical top washer and a conical seat washer, which aims to improve the performance and minimise the risk of misapplication or incorrect mounting related to sets made of two separated pieces. Paolo Cattaneo explains that: “The main innovation of this smart spherical solution lies precisely in its inseparability, which makes it more competitive. Its design is another expression of our idea of innovation,
// It is essential to communicate fastening solutions in an involving, effective way, concretely showing their benefits. //
FASTENER
which for us is not only creating something completely new, but also improving what already exists.”
The route to the next exhibitions
Speaking of trade fairs, Growermetal is paying great attention to upcoming events.
Michela Mauri, Marketing Manager at Growermetal says: “At Fastener Fair Global we experienced a new stand configuration, with a twofloor booth, hosting live demonstrations of our latest products. We think it is essential to communicate our fastening solutions in an involving, effective way, concretely showing their benefits.”
From 1617 May 2023, the Growermetal team will attend Fastener Fair USA at Nashville, Tennessee. This event represents one of America’s most important trade shows with a focus on the entire supply chain and distribution of the fastener industry.
It will be possible to discover the company’s technologies on booth 722: “With this event the Fastener Fair tour comes to an end, so we are doubly excited to participate. Fairs are a unique opportunity to network by showing the latest developments, but also to get in touch with new trends and international realities. Right now we are working with our team on the stand and proposal: we are looking forward to meet our visitors and study solutions for their businesses.” www.growermetal.com

TARGETING GROWTH IN TRYING TIMES
Unifix’s 60th anniversary, anti-dumping, overstocks, prices, China and even recycled fasteners… Torque Magazine has a wide-ranging discussion with Ian Doherty, CEO of the UK’s largest fastener and fixing wholesaler, Owlett-Jaton…
Unifix is hitting 60th anniversary this year, which is a big achievement. Is it correct that there are around 6,000 products in the range? That seems like a sizeable number of SKUs. I guess that is one of the challenges of a fastener wholesaler, to handle that many products?
It’s slightly less than a third of our range. We have a stock range of around 20,000 products and about 30,000 a year that we deal with when you include specials and plating, etc. There will be some businesses that will find that a huge number but for us, 30,000 products is no issue. We’ve recently been implementing a new ERP system and the consultants we worked with said their last job was on a system with 1.5 million SKUs… which puts things in perspective.

If you look at some of the other players in the marketplace, some of the German players have around 100,000 SKUs. Handling so many items is a challenge, but one that we are geared up for and used to.
Sticking with Unifix, one of the big milestones was the revamped packaging...
That was in response to a shift in the marketplace, particularly in the engineering side. The old fashioned trade counters were a hole in the wall and the guy would disappear through it and bring you back a box of bolts, washers, or whatever it was. Now, most of our customers have effectively got a retail environment as their trade counter. The packaging update was to enable us to meet their needs, building a coherent range which made sense to the customers. It’s a full merchandising solution, information panels, that kind of thing. I think we’ll continue to see the industry move towards those retail style environments.
One of the things to consider is the role of the internet. The industry has been very traditional. I’ve been here with OwlettJaton for six and a half years now, and the fastener industry is similar to a previous market I worked in, the stationery market – where people buy from people. That personal interaction is very important. So, creating a welcoming, ‘retail’ environment in which someone could come in and say ‘I need one of these’ helps build that customer rapport and relationship. I don’t see us moving to a place where that’s all done remotely.
Covid saw a big move towards video calls but we’re now seeing people getting back facetoface and acknowledging that relationships are very important.
Jaton Riveting Products was a recent launch for OwlettJaton. How’s that going?
It’s continuing to grow extremely well, we’re very pleased with progress. I think it’s been well received in the marketplace. We’ve invested a lot in providing the right level of technical support to go behind what is really quite a technical product. We are very pleased and will continue to invest in it and continue to expand the range. We’ve issued a new catalogue earlier in the year, so anyone who wants one can go to our website and order one.
You’re still producing printed catalogues?
Yes, we are. It’s backed up by all the information on the website, but there is a definite demand for it as a reference tool. People still like a printed catalogue. Online is not quite the same as flicking through a printed catalogue.
Onto wider industry matters, overstocks are obviously something that lots of companies are talking about in the faster world, especially in the last year and into this year as well. Have you got a view on how the situation is developing and also I guess it means there’s not going to be many stock shortages in the next 12 months or so?
I think stocks are rebalancing. It is an inevitability in a very long lead time supply chain that responsiveness to changes in the supply chain are quite slow. You get a whiplash effect… when sales are going up you take a bit more safety stock. It also goes the other way when demand starts to slow. It’s very difficult to see how much stock is in the supply chain as safety stock, as opposed to real demand.
I think that most players in the marketplace recognised in the middle of last year, that stock was definitely increasing and
// EFDA has spent a lot of time trying to explain to governments and to the European Commission the importance of the fastener industry and how it holds everything together. //
I think people have reacted.
I would think that by end of Q2 we will be back to more normal levels of stock in the marketplace.
Does that mean you’re not going to see any stockouts? No, I don’t think so. We’ve seen imbalanced demand. Our stock levels are very good, but we have still got some products which we are almost hand to mouth. Others were extremely comfortable!
It’s the problem of not having a perfect crystal ball. The stock that is coming in Q1 2023 was mostly ordered in June 2022, and the world’s moved on.
Sticking with that wider supply chain topic, we’ve obviously now got anti-dumping on certain fasteners from China into the EU. For companies such as Owlett-Jaton, supplying Ireland as well as the UK, that must surely have made it more complicated?
It certainly has made it more complex. Ireland is a small part of our total business. We are obviously driven by providing the best commercial solution for Great Britain. So, China has a very large proportion of our outsourcing and that does create issues for selling to both Northern Ireland and Ireland in terms of customs.
We have put additional stock ranges in which are nonChina sourced to enable us to continue to offer our delivered and dutypaid service to Ireland. That’s just a small part of the total range, the range is so broad. Now we have two delivery mechanisms, extra ranges, and yes, it is a pain.
I think we had overcome the Brexit hurdle pretty well. And then antidumping duty was really the icing on the cake and has made it much more complicated. We have a solution. However, I think that for Irish customers, it’s more difficult than it was before.
I think it is pushing some Irish customers towards European suppliers simply because the import requirements are so onerous. They will pay a bit more because they don’t have the resources to deal with all of this administration and complexity.
Carbon border adjustment measure (CBAM) is going to fall into exactly the same box. It covers all products and our customers in Ireland are going to have to deal with it but it will become a challenge for UK, Great Britainbased companies selling into Ireland and the rest of Europe. There’s no money attached to it yet, but it’s another piece of administration from October 2023.
Changing tack a little bit, you’re taking part in the Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) reports now? Related to that, do you think it’s important that there is better data on the industry, for example, so the government doesn’t underestimate the size and importance of the faster industry? Absolutely. Having come into the industry from the outside, I’ve been used to sectors where we’ve had market research, data through trade associations and some indication of how big the market is. Builders merchants are an important channel for us. That BMBI information is very helpful to us in shaping how we do business. Outside the builders merchants it’s a lot less clear.
I would be very supportive of anything that provides better global information. And yes, you’re right, less industry data can lead to governments underestimating the fastener industry – and I think this has been true across the whole of Europe. EFDA has spent a lot of time trying to explain to governments and to the European Commission the importance of the
fastener industry and how it holds everything together. It is easy to underestimate the total marketplace. It’s not very glamorous and it’s not top of people’s minds when they are talking about glamorous projects, electric vehicles and Gigafactories and what have you. But nuts and bolts hold them together. I think the government probably massively underestimated the amount of technology that’s in the fastener industry. Anything that helps with understanding the size and scale of the industry is very important.
It is difficult, however. There are importers, distributors and end users, but you’ve also got people who are distributors and importers. People who are end users that are importers because they are so big. If I sell a product to a distributor, then they sell to the end user, what value do you put on that fastener? It’s not straightforward.
Was stability on your 2023 wishlist?
Yes, more than anything else. Over the last three years, we’ve dealt with Covid, Brexit, antidumping duty, the war in Ukraine. It isn’t one major issue, it has just been one thing after another. A little bit of stability would be quite helpful.
Here’s a slightly left field question, about recycled metal. While aluminium is usually more associated with the recycled metal topic, is this something that is on the radar of the fastener world?
I think this area will be driven by environmental pressures. We’re more steel focused, but I think we will see more questions being asked about whether this is virgin steel from a blast furnace? Is it from an electric arc furnace, where it’s a high proportion of scrap, and therefore lower carbon content? So, I think the recycled question piece will emerge more in our marketplace. I think it’ll be more about primary steel manufacture.
Looking ahead, what are your ambitions for Owlett-Jaton for the next year?
Whatever way you look at it, we’re facing a flat economy, at best. Certainly for manufacturing, maybe less so for construction. House building has been slow as house prices have softened but commercial construction feels safe and pretty robust. The government still seems to be pushing ahead with quite a lot of infrastructure. We are not facing a booming market so we should be pragmatic about the future.
We would like to see continued growth in our business. We continue to invest heavily with a lot of salespeople on the road and we’d like to see that continue to build our position and growth in the marketplace. Businesses generally grow or decline, they rarely plateau. We are fortunate that we are well funded and debtfree so we’re able to continue our investment programme.
For the industry I think UKCA is a ‘shark in the water’. My concern is that the extended deadline will lead some businesses to ignore it in the short term.
In the postGrenfell environment, politically and practically – I know I don’t want to sleep in an unsafe building – I can’t see the government relenting on anything regarding building safety. It will be up to everyone to conform and ensure their products are fully certified. Is there testing capacity to get everything through in time for the deadline? That’s debateable.

Victory Fasteners Founder and Director Vic Waddison has worked in the UK fastener business for almost half a century. Here he looks back on his time in the market and brings us up to date with the latest developments at Victory Fasteners…
As we enter our 12th year of trading at Victory Fasteners and I reflect on my 45 years within the industry, you begin to wonder where the time has gone and, yes, it has gone very quickly.
Having started my journey straight from school at 16 years old with Wolverhampton Engineering Products and then moving onto Henry Halstead, PRD, Icon, Triple fast and now Victory Fasteners, I have had the opportunity to work with some of the great characters within the industry, some good and valuable mentors.
Leaving Triplefast really shook my confidence and I must thank my friend and business partner Allan Stennett for his continued support and loyalty in starting Victory Fasteners together.
It has been a privilege to guide and mentor people under my own management through the years and a pleasure to see those individuals flourish within our industry. I have always been an advocate of leading by example and still sweep the warehouse floor on a regular basis, not that it’s untidy; it just makes me feel good!
Victory has built an excellent reputation serving its distributor customers with an unrivalled range of Standard and NonStandard products, our niche being the diversity and depth of our stock range and what we do we do so well.
Socket products are a significant and growing part of our stock and manufacturing capacity. We don’t stock multiple pallets of M6 X 12 Caps, our niche is the long, short, fine pitch, fully threaded and in all its forms: Caps, Countersunks, Button, Metric and Inch sizes. If we highlight Socket Cap screws as an example we keep up to M48 X
300 finished on the shelf, fully threaded in metric and Inch sizes and blanks in grades 8.8/10.9/12.9 and B7/L7 with the majority being of European origin fully certified.
Whatever the specification or grade we have it covered
In the current market with the export duty implications our sales department can advise at the enquiry stage the COO and if of Chinese origin advise the specific manufacturers applicable duty which has been a great support to our export customers.
// It has been a privilege to guide and mentor people under my own management through the years. //
We have just secured an adjacent unit on Dunstall Hill Trading Estate, giving us an additional 5,200 ft². This additional space will allow for the continued growth of our machine shop, adding new capital equipment and the space for additional pallet positions. Following the successful acquisition of Collins Fasteners last year, we are keen to drive for additional capacity and growth within that Drilling sector, and the additional office space will enable us to create a much larger Quality department to showcase our capabilities. Having exhibited for the first time at the recent Fastener Fair Global, we are showing our commitment to our export customers
and that the concentration of our European sourced stock has been a great platform for that export growth.
Our new 2023 NonStandard and semifinished stock booklet is now available, a copy of which can be requested from our sales department.
As my time within our industry seems to be coming to an end and retirement beckons, I would like to say thank you to all our customers, suppliers both new and old and to all those individuals along the way who have made my life richer for the experience.

ARCHITECTURAL HARDWARE FIRM STRIDES TOWARDS INDUSTRY 5.0 WITH ASTON UNIVERSITY
Utilising the Help to Grow scheme’s KTP project, Birmingham’s Instinct Hardware worked with Aston University to delve into how implementing digital technology can make internal processes like manufacturing slicker and future-ready…
Ironmongery manufacturer Instinct Hardware is working with Aston University on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project, using realtime data to allow more accurate planning and decision making.
The KTP is formed through a threeway collaboration, a business, an academic partner and a highly qualified researcher (KTP associate). This collaboration allows for a deep dive into the business processes, and to see where technology can integrate smoothly.
Part of the process will involve the implementation of realtime data systems. This will allow the team to not only see what is happening around the factory at any time, but to also make decisions at once, rather than relying on hindsight. It will also allow for more accurate planning and future decisionmaking using simulation software and virtual representations.
The Aston University team will be led by Dr Donato Masi, senior lecturer in operations management, whose research focuses on how digitalisation and the emerging Industry 5.0 approach can enhance the sustainability of operations and supply chains. He will be supported by Dr Gajanan Panchal, lecturer in operations management, whose research is focused on how technologies support businesses towards achieving sustainability. Leading the Instinct Hardware team is Nil Chohan, Operations and Technical Director.
Chohan says: “This is a really exciting project for us as a manufacturer, as it will really help us to look to the future and to be prepared digitally. Like many businesses, we are trying to keep up with technology and marry that with our existing working methods. The knowledge and expertise that is available through this scheme helps you to see where your business can go and
strengthens your market position. Help to Grow has already been invaluable to our business, and we are in no doubt that the KTP project will mean we can be more slick when manufacturing. This will in turn lead to increased productivity, quicker turnaround and accurate information.”
Dr Masi tells us: “The project presents an opportunity to deploy the concepts and theories resulting from our research in a realworld situation and demonstrate its highquality impact. The digital virtual representation of the factory will also become a powerful teaching aid in research and taught programmes, exposing students to real manufacturing issues.”
The KTP project is part of the Help to Grow scheme, a government initiative to help UK businesses elevate to the next level through the implementation of digital technology.

SPEED AND EFFICIENCY FOR METALWORKING
As the old adage goes, ‘time is money’ and never more so than during tougher economic times. It’s little wonder, then, that there is even more focus on efficiency in current times and –let’s face it – for the foreseeable future.
One upandcoming tool manufacturer has been determined to make life easier for those in the metalworking sector since it began, aiming to speed things up for fabricators, installers and maintenance engineers. Holemaker Technology (HMT) started out in 2014, founded by brothers Hugh Crane and Piers Crane, who have an industrial supply background. Piers picks up the story: “We have a lot of experience of the market and we found that we were being asked for specialist metal drilling tools that we couldn’t get hold of. They didn’t exist.” At the same time, cordless powertools were improving beyond all recognition, particularly with powerful impact wrenches.”
Having discovered that engineers were in some cases having to cobble together their own tooling in the field, sometimes for unforeseen practical challenges that were holding up expensive projects or repair work, the duo realised there was a gap in the market. Drilling or modifying steel connection holes onsite or in the field –where portable and handheld tools have to be used – was a particular challenging area.
Piers Crane says: “People are looking to
work smarter, with versatile tools. We aimed to fill a niche, we didn’t start up to take business from anyone. It was an untapped market, to have modern cutting tools , designed for the latest generation cordless power tools, for reworking and repairing like this. It freed up industry.”
tional methods, as well as preventing dangerous kickback.”
Rail, MRO, mechanical and energy are strong markets for HMT. Construction’s growing enthusiasm for modular building, often with factorymade steel frames that require connecting in the field, is also highly relevant to the HMT range.
“Growing with good partners”
Speedy and efficient products are the focus, but HMT is not looking for recklessly fast expansion: “We look for steady growth with good partners. The best success to date is working with independent industrial supplies companies that set out to add value to their customer base by showing them new innovations.”
Saving time, money and boosting productivity is at the core of the system. The patented VersaDrive system is one of HMT’s key ranges. The modular cutting system allows cutting tools to be used across impact wrenches and drivers as well as rotary drills including magnetic, handheld, and workshop drilling machines.
“Businesses are looking to work safer, faster and more sustainably,” explains Piers Crane. “On top of that you’ve got factors like material price increases… People are having to look for more efficient methods of working. Versadrive tools are up to 15 times faster than tradi
HMT sells to the market through around 150 dealers in UK and Ireland and ensures it works with qualityfocused dealers to ensure a good fit.
“The beauty of a modular cutting tool system for dealers, is that there are more solutions from less SKUs on the shelf.”
With locations in Kent and Sheffield, HMT is naturally UKfocused, but overseas expansion is well underway. HMT has been trading in North America for two years, based in Indiana. While HMT has a direct presence in the States, in other countries HMT tends to partner with master distributors and use their expertise.
Through innovation, Holemaker Technology aims to speed up metalworking. Torque Magazine speaks with Co-Director Piers Crane about the speedy rise of the business and how it has filled a hole in the sector…

“We regularly exhibit at shows like Eisenwarenmesse, Fabtec etc. While the visitor footfall has been significantly down since Covid, both shows remain really good and we got a number of new stockists on board in several countries.”
Steady growth in uncertain times
Holemaker Technology’s first almost decade of existence has been during some unsettled times, which have seen some competitors fail. “From year one there has been these rolling crisis like referendums, war, elections, pandemics, downturns.. it feels like we’ve had everything thrown at us, but it shows that through it all, growth is still absolutely achievable.”
Recent times have famously not been fantastic for the economy in the UK and beyond. Crane says: “We saw some hesitation in the market at the end of last year, but we are seeing the confidence is coming back.”
Comfortingly, HMT has seen its dealers also weather the ongoing storm of the unsettled economy.
In terms of staffing, HMT has 20 on the books and is recruiting for more. Understandably, the firm is home to technically minded and skilled people. Finding staff that understand and buy into the philosophy of the business has been crucial too, says Crane: “The challenge has been getting the right people. Recruitment can be hard, but we generally hire from recommendations or we get people who approach us.”
“We want HMT customers to be successful”
Alongside innovative product that speeds up metalworking, Holemaker Technology has published a set of core values (see inset) that it aims to live by. “You can hold us to them,” says Crane.
HMT’s support for its dealer partners
comes in a variety of forms, from its dealeronly online ordering portal, which is used by approximately half its customers, to online training courses. There’s been a significant investment in video, to support its dealers and end users alike, with videos that explain the products, how they can best be used and with all the relevant detail.
“Elearning is important to us. We want to help HMT customers to be successful. We visit dealers and regularly spend time with them doing joint visits to their customers, showing how to get the best from their products.”
And while HMT products are now used all over the world, the business keeps its feet firmly on the ground: “Resilience is very important to us. We have been fortunate, we’ve got product that people want!”

TO THE FUTURE – DRAPER’S SUSTAINABILITY & ETHICS PACKAGE
UK tool giant Draper has recently published its Sustainability and Ethics Package, where just
the agenda… Peter Brett visits the firm to find out more…
Iam sure that many companies will be happy to let the sustainability agenda languish at the bottom of the agenda for as long as possible, but in most cases, that doesn’t make sense for now or the future. Current gas prices should have made the penny drop.
Draper is one of the country’s largest tool suppliers and so is better placed that many to examine the Green Agenda and work out what it can do to meet the UK’s carbon neutral targets. Draper’s recently published Sustainability and Ethics Package is an ambitious and detailed response that looks at the macro and the micro –everything is on the agenda. From designing the new Baddesley Distribution Centre with sustainability built in from the ground up, down to motion sensor lighting and the wholesale adoption of LED lights, it is clear that Draper has had a close look and opted for changes that not only help the planet, but are also wise things for the company to do.
The everyday response
For example, the company’s maintenance team is tasked with making things better rather than just keep things going. This could mean anything from replacing inef
ficient energyhungry systems to recycling anything that can be recycled. Draper is proud to say that its efforts go well beyond their legal obligations and answer the question: Green? with the words: ‘Because we believe that is the right thing to do for the environment as well as being good for business – and that’s a great model for true sustainability’.
It is clear that, to Draper, simply recycling a few cardboard boxes doesn’t count as a serious response to a major problem facing all of us.
Cutting waste helps too
Draper has held the ISO 14001 Environmental management standard for the last 21 years and it meets the requirements of the latest WEEE regulations to minimise disposal of electrical waste. Draper has had some good ideas on the latter.
For example, an initiative to repair and repurpose old company IT equipment for use in the wider community or to repair computers in the company itself saves a lot of WEEE Disposal. Used power tools can also be refurbished and reused. Many are donated to organisations like the Mens’ Shed Movement where they are much appreciated by the clients.
Packaging – not as simple as it looks
Changing to recyclable card for products is not a simple ‘job done’. There are a lot of considerations, apart from being a good advertisement for the goods on a hook in a local DIY shop. Better packaging design should aim to reduce weight, remove plastic, and associated shrink film and then finally be recyclable. Draper has widely consulted with its manufacturing partners and experts in the field of packaging to be as sustainable as possible. It is an ongoing task as each new product needs to be considered on its own. But something must be working – Draper states that 82% of its waste is currently being recycled.
Supply chain ethics
We have all heard about the Western world ‘exporting’ its pollution to China, India and other places by letting them do all of our dirty manufacturing. Unfortunately it still goes, but there are other companies (Draper is one of them) that work alongside manufacturing partners to meet social, moral ethical and safety requirements.
Draper employs its own General Manager in Shanghai – a senior QA professional of 30 years standing whose job, along with his team, is to ensure, as far as possible, that
Draper has reduced packaging weight and made it as recyclable as possible
about everything is on
Draperdestined products are produced to a high quality in ethically run factories in line with ISO9001 standards.
Colleagues need care too
It might be a revelation for some companies that the people are the company. The pandemic and working from home proved to be a make or break for some businesses. In short, forwardlooking companies realised that employees sometimes
need help and understanding. I can’t put it better than Graham Wade, MD of Draper: “We have made some big improvements when it comes to health and wellbeing, thanks to the great work by our HR team. We have regular wellbeing meetings with all teams in the business – both home and abroad – to see how people are and offer any support we can. Some people really struggle balancing home and work life, especially if they are
working remotely, so we try to do all we can to help and understand people’s individual needs.
“The introduction of mental health first aiders and mental health champions has been a really great step forward. Also, having all senior people in our business trained in mental health awareness means we can spot those struggling faster and give them the help and advice they need. Regular wellbeing sessions on fitness and nutrition, to name a couple, have been introduced and well received too.”
Community work and support
Whether it is supporting homeless charity Trinity Winchester, Repair Cafes or Tools for SelfReliance (locally and abroad) with individual acts of compassion and kindness inbetween, Draper Tools has played major part in the local community. Aware of its responsibilities Draper helps military veterans, Mens’ Sheds and lots of others in the wider area. It is not just an important local employer, but a place people can turn if help is needed.
It is clear that Draper Thinks Globally and Acts Locally – the slogan for ethical and Green Policies worldwide. I am hoping that this motto applies more widely in the future and we should congratulate companies like Draper Tools that are trying to make a difference.

TECHNOLOGY STRATEGIES TO TACKLE TOOLING INDUSTRY CHALLENGES IN 2023
11 March was Worship of Tools Day and UK suppliers and distributors of tools were celebrating innovation in both sectors and strategies for survival, despite facing a combination of challenges never seen before, explains OGL
ovid19 and climate change, war and geopolitical issues persist in an era when technological progress is storming ahead creating its own hurdles but also a wealth of opportunity. As the tooling and toolsupply industries are key to ensuring production capability and industrial growth, they must adapt and evolve.
Adopting the right technology to manage business processes and make daily operations leaner and more agile can help to ensure success amidst a fastchanging industrial landscape. OGL Software’s COO Sharon Moreno explores how those in the tooling supply sector can survive and thrive in this difficult economic period.
Industry challenges in 2023
During the Covid19 pandemic it might have been hard to envisage further supply chain or workforce disruptions but 2022 illustrated that there was indeed more turmoil to come. The war in Ukraine continues, climate impacts are increasing and government policies are shifting where products are made and what is exported and to where.
Into this mix, we can add the challenge of recruiting both quantity and quality of workforce, high inflation, and the need to meet corporate climate goals.
Time to diversify and identify new sectors
The global hand tools market is set to grow to nearly £24 billion by 2026. Even as some traditional industries decline there are opportunities, the sector has ample opportunity to supply emerging verticals, such as electric vehicle and sustainable energy product manufacturers.
This is coupled with the trend of digitalisation that has led to growth in the adoption of electronic and electrical devices in the households for performing the daily
Cchores, and the surge in doityourself activities resulting from the pandemic.
We are in what the World Economic Forum (WEF) commonly refers to as an era of digital transformation as the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” This is a perfect storm for the tools sector and the possibilities for diversification are strong, while maintaining supply for stockists, DIY stores and trade customers.
Use digital technologies to streamline business operations
Technology delivers a potential solution to many industry challenges by enabling greater agility and helping businesses overcome problems.
The market is offering advanced and innovative hand tools with better durability. For example, the integration of wrench and screwdrivers in one tool and the manufacture of pliers using lasertreated cuttingedge technology with a rust preventive coating to increase durability.
Follow large firm’s lead and introduce ERP
So, what does adopting technology look like on the ground for the tooling industry? What advantages can the right solutions provide in meeting and overcoming wider industry challenges to benefit from the potential for growth that is available?
Industry appropriate technologies, such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, can make companies leaner, costefficient and more agile. ERP is commonly used in many larger firms across multiple sectors, to manage daytoday business operations and it makes sense for smaller companies to adopt similar practices. Indeed, from recent research into profitability in SMEs, we identified the growing realisation that ERP systems are not solely for large enterprises. ERP systems can help to automate and manage core business processes to ensure optimal performance, and provide the data that management teams need, at a click, to respond to ever evolving challenges.
Keep on top of supplier price changes
Drilling rightdown to the tooling industry, stockists and distributors need to be fully cognisant of cost changes and be ready to pass them on to customers or reduce margins. Currently price fluctuations are one of the most difficult impacts to manage and often the costliest.
To ensure that tooling distributors can bring these innovations to market and maintain a competitive edge, they should audit existing technology set ups, and introduce new digital technologies to help adopt strategies for the future of work and create a plan for supply chain resiliency. However, technology has its own headwinds, which we won’t cover in detail here, such as increased cybersecurity risk and data privacy requirements. We can view these headwinds in a similar way to the challenges posed by the first industrial revolution. Both then and now, the priority is for tools and machines to operate safely.
Price changes can be influenced by inflation or the availability of imports, and they are passed on from supplier to supplier as component cost and availability changes.
...
// Technology delivers a potential solution to many industry challenges. //
Software can help to monitor, import and manage frequent supplier price fluctuations in realtime; making it painless to implement changes and ensure margins are protected. ERP software can easily manage high volumes of products and make it easy to add new products, including full supplier catalogues.
Understanding realtime pricing underlies profitability targets and ensures that the tooling industry and toolsuppliers are as lean and flexible as possible to compete both at home and with overseas suppliers.
Become truly multi-channel Covid19 accelerated the need for multichannel retailing and distribution in the tooling industry. Technology has been introduced to step up to this challenge whilst equally supporting traditional sales mediums such over the counter, or the more personal sales approach.
Integration happens bydesign in today’s iterative technologies, so full software platforms are today designed to bring together ecommerce, CRM, order processing, quoting and more, for both online purchases as well as in store.
Even telesales teams can access software while working remotely to advise customers and quickly access both real
time pricing and product availability. This responsiveness is critical to meet supplychain challenges and to enable customers to do the same, wherever they are.
ERP in action
We’ve seen major transformation in distribution businesses over the last three years at OGL Software. Companies that have embraced technology and thrived include Fix247 a trade supplier business providing everything from power tools to fixings. Fix247 had outgrown the Sage 50 software it had been using to manage its business for some time.
Fix247 says Profit4 ERP has streamlined its business and allowed it to move forward: “we now send all sales orders & purchase orders from the system and processing the sales orders takes half the time, which enables us to get more orders out more quickly.”
Efficiencies at process level have exponential benefits for longterm revenue generation and business growth. Years ago, purchasing multiple software to provide information on stock levels, invoicing, CRM and more was a costly and a longwinded process. Today’s subscription models in the form of SaaS and ease of customisation mean that investing in
new technology to overcome industry challenges won’t break a business bank account. What’s more, employees benefit from the latest technology at their fingertips and will often gravitate to employers who make such an investment.
Cutting tools distributor TBS Oxford has implemented the subscription model of ERP software Profit4. For the firm, it embraces all business operations into one system, from stock control and ordering to finance and accounting. It also delivers powerful reporting and analytics which allows leaders to be truly responsive to industry changes even if they are fed from the macroeconomic level. With the right information, leaders can build the resiliency into their business that industry experts recommend, and they can also effectively plan for labour market constraints.
In conclusion, industry characteristics, policies, and practices, across the world are changing. Diversification and identification of emerging sectors, coupled with the savvy use of technology and adopting a multichannel sales strategy will help companies large and small, whether manufacturer, distributor, wholesaler or retailer, to come out of this tough period intact.

CLOCK TICKING ON UKCA & CBAM
Like the rest of Europe, the UK market has come into 2023 with relatively high levels of stock. General inflation remains stubbornly high impacting operating costs and whilst shipping costs have come down substantially from 2022 levels, these high stocks and the need to cover higher operating costs will likely limit those price reductions in the market.
The UK government has now clarified that CE marking will still be recognised for construction products until the end of June 2025. Regrettably, the government has decided that test results for CE marking, there being no current difference in standards, will not be accepted and that UKbased testing must be undertaken. Whilst this may seem like a long way off, with the
levels of stock and the long lead times in the fastener supply chain, to ensure that all product sold from July 2025 is UKCA certified and marked requires action to be taken in short order – which is proving challenging in the face of limited testing facilities.
Similar challenges exist for the conversion of ETA to UKTA in the same timescale.
The new Windsor framework, which amends the Northern Ireland Protocol, has been hailed by many as a big step forward in smoothing trade between mainland GB and Northern Ireland (NI). However, the single biggest challenge in
the fastener trade is AntiDumping Duty (ADD) on many Chinese products. We are still awaiting the final details of the framework, but as ADD is a trade remedy, it seems unlikely that the framework will change the burden of managing ADD products into NI. Trade with NI will also be affected by the introduction of CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Measures) by the EU. The final mechanism is yet to be published, but will add a further burden to trade with NI and the rest of the EU for UK businesses.
However, the economic outlook in the UK is more positive than at the end of 2022 and I am sure the industry will continue to adapt to the economic and legislative challenges posed.

AWARD-WINNING DUO LINE GROWS AGAIN
fischer’s latest fixing has not gone unnoticed by design award judging panels. The DuoXpand was named a German Design Award winner in the ‘Excellent Product Design – Building and Elements’ category. That was preceded by a Red Dot Product Design award in 2022. Not only that, but the DuoXpand managed to impress the Design Centre BadenWurttemberg where the frame fixing solution was recognised for its “exceptional quality”.
What’s the fuss all about? Let’s take it from the top. The fischer DuoXpand is approved for multiple fixings of nonstructural systems in concrete, masonry and aerated concrete with the fischer safety screw. It guarantees a safe hold in all building materials classes. Thanks to its special lamella geometry and material combination in particular, the plug expands gently and reliably in the respective building material. The premounted safety screw is matched to the plug and saves time during installation.
The advantages at a glance
The combination of design and material adapts to various building materials and enables universal use.
The grey main body made of high-quality nylon provides the strength, while the red material component ensures flexibility and optimal spreading.
The special lamella geometry expands gently in the respective building material. This avoids fractures in porous building materials and enables anchoring close to the edge.
The European Technical Assessment (ETA) for multiple use for non-structural applications ensures secure hold in all building material classes.
The pre-mounted safety screw is perfectly matched to the plug and ensures time savings during installation.
The design and material combination bites into all building materials for universal use. That special lamella geometry expands gently in the building material and avoids fractures in porous building materials. Therefore, anchoring close to the edges is possible without any problems.
Made of high quality nylon, the grey main body provides strong hold, while the flexible, red material component ensures optimal spreading. The countersunk head screw and conically shaped plug rim are especially suited for wooden constructions.

The big focus at LIGNA 2023
LIGNA, trade fair for woodworking and wood processing plant, machinery and tools, returns for the first time since the pandemic. Alex Dalton, Director at Daltons Wadkin, the UK’s longestestablished distributor and manufacturer of industrial woodworking machinery, has given his take on the big talking points at the Hannover, Germany-set show
A big focus on software development
After such a delay, it’s easy to expect that there will be more shown off at LIGNA than usual.
From a hardware perspective, the woodworking industry has reached a point where revolutionary changes are getting rarer. Instead, more emphasis is being placed on improving the capabilities of the accompanying software.
I expect it will be software that takes centre stage at LIGNA, particularly within the areas of automation and digital fabrication.
The automatic processes with these machines have been well developed over several years, to a standard in which they cannot drastically get much better.
However, the biggest changes we tend to see come with the software, particularly with how operator safety can be improved, how labourintensive jobs can be deskilled as much as possible, and how user interfaces can be made more functional, both for the vendor and user.
A more intuitive future for the industry
Another important factor in improving software is how it makes the machines we operate more intuitive.
There tend to be different levels of input when it comes to software, but increasingly the industry is manoeuvring into a position where machines require as little input from operators as possible.
By making our machines more intuitive we’re freeing up our operators to apply their skills in other areas of the business, including managing and optimising the cutting lists and working to get the most yield out of products.
That information is then fed back into the machines and, depending on its manufacturer, the hardware is often linked up, talking to a central control brain and working in tandem. With more intuitive software we get more intuitive machines.
And one would believe that the more intuitive our processes are, the more efficient they will increasingly become.
Expect tweaks to hardware but nothing groundbreaking
When analysing technology development broadly across multiple industries, it is very rare that we see anything revolutionary. Instead, we see a greater focus put into making tweaks and changes that make the technology at our disposal even better.
Take the Apple iPhone as an example. With each annual release, we do not get presented with a product that is wholly different from the previous model. But we do get just enough minor improvements that make a difference to the consumer and continually elevate the standard of performance in line with consumer expectations.
Speaking specifically about woodworking, there are two classes of machinery in our industry: there is automated and manual and not too much in between.
And similar to Apple, the approach in the woodworking industry is to take the machines and products and make small but noticeable changes that will help companies become more efficient. At the core of that is a focus to make machines safer but also easier to use due to the increasing knowledge and skill gap facing the industry.
A look into a more sustainable future Sustainable manufacturing is undoubtedly the biggest area for improvement right now and the upcoming LIGNA exhibition could give us a deeper understanding of the way our sector is going to become more focused on this area.
Greater strides are starting to be made with ESG Environmental, Social and Governance in mind. The industry is taking steps to reduce waste, utilise sustainably sourced materials, and implement efficient manufacturing processes.
But more can always be done and LIGNA is as likely an event as any to showcase what further action can be taken to reduce our environmental impact and produce products that retain quality but are also less harmful.

Sun shines on photovoltaic focused Gtreriv rivets
Quick and easy to fasten thanks to the mechanism that allows the mandrel to break flush with the surface, Gtreriv rivets ensure the effectiveness of the rivet on joints with different thicknesses.
As spotted at the recent Fastener Fair Global, Gtrerivs are strong, watertight and are among the latest inclusions of Rivit’s extensive catalogue of fastening systems, offered to the construction, industrial and retail sectors.
These rivets are designed to be used even on soft, thin, flexible and fragile surfaces because – thanks to the three large pressure wings – the clamping force is distributed over a large part of the surface, preventing damage. Therefore, any material can be riveted safely, says Rivit. Gtrerivs feature good tensile strength as well as resistance to cuts and vibrations, making them suitable for precision fastenings due to an excellent level of grip even on curved surfaces.
the needs of numerous application sectors. In 1994, the company started a new division aiming specifically at the stainless steel screws and nuts. The production of tools for setting blind rivets and rivet nuts, which is one of Rivit's today strengths, began in 1998.
Taking advantage of the opportunities related to the market expansion, the Emiliabased company began to take on a more international dimension, expanding its partnership strategies. The need for a stateoftheart logistics system to meet the growing needs of the international market, led Rivit to move in 2006 to its current headquarters in Ozzano dell'Emilia (BO): a modern building definitely in line with the company's size and ambitions. To reflect its broadening international development, in 2011 Rivit India Fasteners Private Ltd was created, followed in 2017 by the Rivit Maroc office to preside over the North African market.
In 2021 Rivit became part of FERVI Group, a Stock Exchange listed Company expanding more in the MRO and mechanical tooling sectors.
Rivit designed these rivets for the construction industry. With waterproof characteristics, provided by the neoprene gasket placed under the head, and corrosion resistance due to the aluminium alloy that makes up the body and the mandrel, they are effective even in critical weather conditions. In particular, Gtrerivs are suitable for fastenings on the brackets that support photovoltaic solar panels on trapezoidal sheeting and sandwich panels.
To ensure the clamping of thicknesses with different widths, Gtreriv rivets are available in different diameters and lengths (d.5.2mm, d.6.3mm and d.7.7mm) and can have dome or large head as needed. To place these rivets, the Ozzanobased company, which has always worked closely with its customers with valuable consulting services, also offers tools suitable for fastening Gtreriv in its catalogue.
50 years in fastening
Rivit S.r.l. has been offering fastener solutions from the Italian Bologna area since 1973. It began by focusing on marketing small metal parts, blind rivets and bolts. Within about 15 years, it consolidated its position on the market, and supported by a steady growth in 1990 it set up a production unit dedicated to blind rivets, made in different alloys to meet
Today Rivit supplies the industrial, retail, and construction sectors with products and customer support on fastening systems and relevant tools for sheet metal working, registering its presence in more than 65 countries worldwide. This year, Rivit is celebrating its first 50 years of business marked by growth, innovation and international presence that have made it one of the leading Italian players in the fastening systems sector.

• Tie-rods savings
• Minimal noise thanks to the new silencer
• Traditional mechanical stroke adjustment system available
• Tie-rods & heads in inches available on demand
Particular attention in the design of this tool was paid to the reduction of noise, weight, size and a new system that allows two ways of use: air power setting or mechanical stroke adjustment. The first feature allows a fast and extremely intuitive adjustment from the first rivet nut simply by using the regulation valve located in the lower part of the riveter, which is connected to a small pressure indicator. This enables the correct installation of the rivet nut by controlling the level of pressure.
AIS reveals new self-checking bolt
Anstee Indication Systems (ais) has launched an innovative selfchecking bolt which features robust internal sensor technology to detect and alert via a remote monitoring system when a crack or other failure occurs that could compromise the bolt’s integrity.
While the ais Smart Bolt is manufactured to meet specific customer size and strength specifications, from ¾” (20mm) diameter, its patented selfchecking technology has been tested and proven in more than three years of service in other fixings.
Managing Director, Craig Anstee, explains: “The Smart Bolt is suitable for all types of applications and is particularly beneficial where the condition of the bolt needs to be known and monitored for operation and safety.
“It is also ideal for applications that are not easily accessible for inspection or environments that are hostile and/or unstable. As well as improving safety for all stakeholders, it also improves the efficiency and productivity of maintenance operations by identifying which bolts require immediate replacement.”
In addition to inhouse manufacturing in the UK, Anstee Indication Systems is open to all commercial opportunities.

ATLAS COPCO HITS 150
From local start-up in Stockholm to a global group with a broad range of power tools, assembly systems, construction tools and more, Atlas Copco celebrates its century and a half this year…
In 1873, a plucky small firm was founded, focused on delivering equipment for construction of the Swedish rail system. Since then it is fair to say that Atlas Copco has expanded its remit, backing industries in as varied as food production and space travel.
From Stockholm to Outer Space!
Founded as Atlas in 1873, Atlas Copco (as it became called in 1956) is today split across four business areas – Compressor Technique, Vacuum Technique, Industrial Technique and Power Technique –supporting customers in 180 countries and some in actual space.
“We are extremely proud of our past, and we continue to shape the future through our technologies and service solutions,” says Mats Rahmström, CEO and President of the Atlas Copco Group. “Much has changed since 1873 when we were a small local startup. But I think our founders would recognise our innovative spirit, the passion shown by our employees and our dedication to drive development together with our customers.”

BETTER THAN PREDICTED - WITH MORE IMPROVEMENT TO COME
Will
BHETA’s latest quarterly economic report, a comprehensive market insight aimed at suppliers and retailers, confirms that while there are plenty of challenges, things are better than predicted in terms of overall economics, and the DIY category performance saw relative improvement throughout 2022, with a positive start to 2023. The reports pull together multiple sources of data on recent trading, including category size, growth rates and consumer behaviour.
The winter period was supported by demand for energy efficient products, as energy costs continue to hit the headlines and while growth was lower than the YoY figure, total expenditure remains above prepandemic levels. In 2022 overall, DIY and Gardening saw sales down by 10.1% versus 2021, amid rising costofliving pressures, coupled with higher inflation on DIY products. The category was also impacted by consumers having already brought forward purchases during the pandemic. However, Kingfisher was not alone in reporting a stronger end to the year. In its November results, it highlighted the strong start to Q4, with likeforlike sales up 2.8% for three weeks to 19 November 2022, backed by ongoing strength in energy efficiency product sales and demand from the trade segment.
Categories on the up
While Gardening and Outdoor overall declined in the same period, subcategory, Outdoor Living performed more strongly, aided by relatively warmer weather in October and November. The Bathroom Furniture subcategory also performed well, growing 9.0% yearonyear against a positive comparative in Q4 2021. The essential nature of these products continues to boost demand, with purchases driven by replacement of old or wornout items. Kitchen Furniture experienced a doubledigit growth this quarter, as retailers fulfilled orders from previous quarters, boosting recognised revenue. Addi
tionally, consumers were buying into new looks and designs, in anticipation of social gatherings.
One key point here – suppliers and retailers must continue to ensure they bring innovative product designs to market to maintain this trajectory – as well as costeffective options for the underpressure demographics.
Predicting 2023
As we know from the Budget, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has brightened its forecast with a shallower
// While there are plenty of challenges, things are better than predicted in terms of overall economics, and the DIY category performance saw relative improvement throughout 2022, with a positive start to 2023. //
Over 8,000 print copies of Torque Direct are sent to named decision makers throughout the UK, as well as digital editions reaching the inboxes of over 80,000 international engineers and decision makers around the world, in the following specific market sectors:
economic downturn short term, an uplift to medium term growth and an overall improvement in the offing. The UK will avoid recession this year and begin growing earlier than previously estimated, reaching its prepandemic peak by mid2024. After peaking at 11.1% in October of last year, inflation is now forecasted to fall to 2.9% by the end of 2023. The forecast expects two years of close to 0% inflation in 202526.
In DIY and Garden, several categories showing healthy growth in consumer interest online so far in 2023. While that doesn’t necessarily directly translate into positive sales growth it represents a strong start particularly in categories relating to energy efficiency and trade projects.
Of course, this is only a snapshot of the full BHETA report, and I urge all suppliers and retailers in the category to access the whole document amounting to around fifty pages of crucial information for these tricky but opportunityfilled times.

BHETA works extensively with GlobalData, the leading supplier of market data as well as its own inhouse research, Google, ONS and other sources. Even on its own, GlobalData uses primary research to make estimates for private companies and independents and crossreferences the estimates with secondary sources, to generate a complete view of the market. So, the BHETA Quarterly Market Report really is gospel for suppliers and retailers.

Reaching out to young engineers
Securing and encouraging future engineering professionals is a vital part of the broader engineering industry and this issue we highlight a couple of initiatives aiming to do just that…
Industry-funded programme boosts STEM for West Cumbrian schools
14 Cumbrian schools will benefit from a collaboration between 3D printing specialists 3D 360 and Sellafield Ltd.
3D printing and digital manufacturing business 3D 360 is providing equipment and five days of specialist teacher training to enable young people to experience digital manufacturing and to make STEM (science, technology and mathematics) subjects more appealing.
Through 3D 360’s LIFT (Local Industry Funding Technology) programme, companies can fund equipment and training for a single or multiple schools in their area.
Sellafield Ltd agreed to support and fund the LIFT programme in West Cumbria which has enabled 14 schools to receive training and equipment through its SiX – Social Impact Multiplied – programme.
Lee Fogg, Technical Director of 3D 360 said: “We are so thankful to Sellafield Ltd for supporting our LIFT programme. Our original scheme proposed 12 local schools but combining some of the smaller and specialist schools has allowed 14 schools to benefit from the programme.
“This technology and training will help students gain vital practical skills in a fastgrowing industrial sector and help address the decline in STEM subjects by providing a whole new style of learning for students who may find the typical academic curriculum difficult.”
Schools will receive 3D printers, safety enclosures, 3D CAD training, Mayku desktop vacuum formers, Cricut digital diecutting machines, graphic tablets and five days of specialist training for two teachers.
Tracey West, Sellafield Ltd Social Impact Manager said: “It is important to us to ensure that we are providing the next generation with skills that enable them to access a future sustainable income and that 3D printing and digital manufacturing is going to continue to play a key role in the future of manufacturing.”
Run by research and development engineers Lee and business partner Paul Bullock, 3D 360 is an engineering company known for being a subject matter expert in 3D printing (Additive Manufacturing), Digital Manufacturing and 3D CAD. The company operates out of a range of bases across Cumbria including in Whitehaven and Bowness. Companies wishing to be a part of the LIFT programme should contact LIFT@3d360printer.co.uk
Science Museum to highlight apprentices
Two MTC Training apprentices will be part of a new permanent exhibition in London’s Science Museum. The exhibit aims to promote STEM subjects to youngsters.
The exhibit – "Technology Makes it Happen" – is supported by The Gatsby Foundation which is a charity established by David Sainsbury to promote science, education and the arts.
MTC Training apprentices Kieran Bullivant and Evadney Enock, who have completed their advanced manufacturing apprenticeships, feature in a video talking about their training and the opportunities that have opened up to them. The exhibition opened at the end of last year and is scheduled to stay at the Science Museum for at least 10 years.
Kieran Bullivant said they were both privileged to promote a career in engineering and manufacturing, and help encourage youngsters into industry.
The MTC was founded by the University of Birmingham, Loughborough University, the University of Nottingham and TWI Ltd. The MTC’s industrial members include some of the UK’s major global manufacturers.
The MTC aims to provide a competitive environment to bridge the gap between universitybased research and the development of innovative manufacturing solutions, in line with the Government’s manufacturing strategy. The MTC is part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, supported by Innovate UK.
