WICKES REVAMP CONNECTS WITH BROADER TREND Wickes is a 230-strong store retail chain that is probably best known for being a straightforward and good value supplier of hardware, tools and related items. Giving off vibes of a builders’ merchant rather than a DIY store unlike B&Q, Wickes stores are perceived to be trade orientated more than DIY-focused, in typically functional, box units on industrial parks. But things are changing.

These unshowy units are currently being updated and taking on lessons from more general retail spaces – more windows, brighter displays and aiming to be a pleasant retail experience, rather than simply having stuff on shelves. It turns out that it doesn’t hurt a retail environment to be pleasant – even for tradespeople!

To see a national trade-orientated retailer like Wickes paying closer attention to the look and feel of its store estate is very much tapping into that wider theme of optimising selling space.

Where trade counters used to be utilitarian and functional, more are buying into the idea that it is possible (and may yield better sales) if they have a few more bells and whistles, whether that’s POS, impulse-purchase items by the till, branding, complementary ranges of relevant tools/aerosols/consumables/etc…

There are no doubt plenty of broader retail lessons that can be taken on by innovative trade-focused suppliers who operate with some kind of retail environment.

Whether trade counters or B2B webshops, inspiration can be gleaned from sources outside the immediate industry.

FASTENER MARKET CONTINUES TO GROW DESPITE DIFFICULT TRADING

D

espite many geographical markets facing a variety of serious challenges, a number of major fastener players recorded a positive 2023, including SFS, Fastenal and Würth, with acquisitions helping buoy numbers, in some cases.

SFS Group achieved its growth targets despite the difficult economic environment. In financial year 2023, third­party sales of CHF 3,090.8 million were generated. The increase of 12.6% against the prior­year period was underpinned by organic growth of 2.1%. Consolidation effects stemming from the inclusion of Hoffmann as of 1 May 2022, accounted for 14.6% of the sales growth.

Fastenal’s 2023 net sales hit $7,346.7 million, up 5.2% on 2022’s $6,980.6 million. The North America­headquartered fastener giant saw Q4 net sales increase 3.7%, compared with Q4 2022, with growth in unit sales – primarily due to growth at its onsite locations.

The Würth Group also reported annual sales growth, with the Group reaching a new record. Sales topped €20 billion for the first time in its corporate history (according to its preliminary financial statements) in the 2023 fiscal year.

Despite the tense global economic and political situation, the

Group was able to grow, but the difficult conditions did have an impact on the operating result, it said. Sales grew by 2.4%.

Adjusted for currencies, sales growth came out at 3.5%. The operating result is expected to remain below last year’s result at EUR 1.4 billion (2022: EUR 1.6 billion), the second­best result in the history of the Group.

RED SEA SECURITY RISK “REMAINS AT SIGNIFICANT LEVEL”

M

aersk has warned its customers to prepare for significant disruption to the global network due to the “deeply volatile” situation in and around the Red Sea / Gulf of Aden.

In December 2023, shipping companies began to avoid the Red Sea and Suez Canal following military strikes aimed at container vessels. That disruption has persisted well into the new year, with ships diverting around the Cape of Good Hope, adding weeks to journeys.

January 2024 saw major shipping company Maersk advise that the situation in and around the Red Sea / Gulf of Aden is “extremely volatile with all the available intelligence at hand confirming that the security risk remains at a significant level.” Maersk is making changes to its Transpacific services and Asia­Europe services in response: “We understand the potential impact this may have on logistics operations, but customers can rest assured that all decisions have been carefully considered. We are making these changes to preserve weekly departures for our services with the goal of offering more predictability, reliability, and consistency, despite the associated delays.

“While we continue to hope for a sustainable resolution in the near­future and do all we can to contribute towards it, the situation currently remains untenable, and we encourage customers to prepare for complications in the area to persist and for there to be significant disruption to the global network.”

Changes at SPIROL

effrey F. Koehl has been appointed Chairman of SPIROL International Holding Corporation. Jeff joined the company in 1997 and has been serving as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SPIROL International Corporation since his appointment in 2010.

Jeff succeeds his father, Hans H. Koehl, who passed away on November 30, 2023. Hans retired from active management of the com­ pany in 2004 after 45 of dedicated service.

Hans made unparalleled contributions to SPIROL – most importantly the education, coaching and mentoring of his son, Jeff, in preparation for him to be his successor.

SPIROL was co­founded in 1948 by Jeff’s grandfather, Herman J. Koehl, Hans A. Prym, and Walther G. von Conta. After 75 years, the

raper Tools has announced six new appointments for the business. Sarah Hartland has been promoted to Head of Marketing, alongside five new hires across the company’s sales and finance teams.

Mark Broughton joins Draper Tools as Director of Finance and will be over­ seeing the company’s financial future and strategies for growth and expansion.

Draper’s expanding sales team has been boosted by the appointment of Paul Middlemiss as Automotive Sales manager as well as Nick Ward and Carl Osborne as Key Account Managers. Also newly appointed to the sales team is Jack Alcock who joins Draper as Lead Marketplace Account Manager.

The appointments come at a time of innovation and modernisation for family­ owned Draper Tools, which kicked off with the appointment of Matt Sheen as CEO in January 2023. SARAH HARTLAND

DRAPER TOOLS Looking beyond fasteners and fixings, in this issue we delve into the tool industry and speak to Sarah Hartland, the Head of Marketing at Draper Tools, about her career and working in a male-dominated field.

How did you get into the industry?

I’ve had a very varied career. I trained as a journalist and went into PR and marketing after university. Since then, I’ve marketed all sorts of things from baby food to alcohol. I got into the industry in 2017 when I started working in marketing for a Hampshire­based builder’s merchant. Alongside building materials, the merchant sold tools, so I was able to get a good understanding of the industry before I began working for Draper Tools in 2019.

What does your day-to-day job involve?

I currently manage a team of six, so I lead group meetings to make sure everyone is on track. One minute I’ll be working on a go­to­market strategy to launch a new range of drill bits, and

I am often in many meetings discussing plans and I’m respon­ sible for how we spend our budget and what activity goes into our marketing calendar. I report to the CEO, so you’ll often find me tracking activity and detailing ROI for our campaigns.

What is it like to be part of the senior team at Draper Tools?

I have settled into the senior team well. Even though I am the youngest of the group, I put that to the back of my mind. Age is just a number really. Across the four years I’ve been at Draper, I have often presented to the Board of Directors and the Leader­ ship Team so I’m confident in what I’m saying and the reasons behind our marketing activity. We do have several females in the senior team in National Accounts, Customer Services and Credit Control so it’s great to work alongside them.

What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and company since you started?

Draper is a brand with so much potential and I’m glad to be part of the journey to take it to the next level. The biggest challenge we have is our need to modernise and appeal to the younger generation. We know that many households have Draper Tools in their toolboxes, but we need the name to be passed down the generations. Social media is a big part of our strategy moving forward as well as continuing to work with our sponsorship partners including Southampton Football Club and EXCELR8, the British Touring Car Championship race team.

Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far?

One of my proudest moments will be launching BUNKER, a Draper sub­brand of modular storage and roller tool cabinets. From the branding to the advertising campaign, I got involved in it all. Seeing it come to fruition and seeing sales increase because of it, has been brilliant. We are working on some big plans for BUNKER in 2024 so it’s incredible that the brand is continuing to grow.

From launching a new cocktail menu at a Jamie Oliver restau­ rant to being part of an award­winning construction campaign, there’s been quite a few highs which I’m lucky to have experi­ enced throughout my career.

You’ve achieved a lot in your career at a young age, has your age ever been an issue or posed any challenges in the workplace?

I am believer in a good marketeer can market anything. Over my career I’ve been put in many situations where I’ve had to think outside the box and come up with new and creative ideas. This background put me in good stead to believing in myself and my ideas. Age is not something I worry about. As long as I go with my gut, then I back myself completely. I was once told that I have a mature head on young shoulders which I now see as a compli­ ment. Being 32 doesn’t stop me, I actually see it as a positive.

What is your favourite thing about the tool industry?

I like the diversity of it. There’s so many tools and fixings that are needed for a range of jobs that marketing it never gets boring. You can talk to so many different tradespeople but ultimately you feel like part of one big community.

What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the tool industry and related fields?

I would love to see more women in the tool industry and in particular in higher positions. Over my career there’s been times when I’ve been the only female in the room, but that has never stopped me. If you believe in yourself enough, then age and gender is irrelevant. I think building federations and suppliers need to come together to encourage younger females to choose construction apprenticeships and guide them on the careers available in this industry.

“YOUR SPECIAL IS OUR STANDARD” Sunco is a mainstay of the Japanese fastener industry, a sizeable supplier in itself and the organiser of “Sunco kai”, the biggest fastener association in Japan. Now, it is reaching out internationally – particularly to the UK and US – to help fill gaps in supply and make good on its motto that ‘your special is our standard’…

S

unco is a large fastener supplier looking to grow inter­ nationally but – it emphasises, it sees itself as a comple­ ment to other businesses, not as a replacement.

Founded on 6 March 1948, Sunco’s head office is in Itachi­ bori, Nishi­ku in Osaka (one of two branches in the city).

Employing 800 staff, Sunco has a branch in Tokyo, plus a logis­ tic centre and five external warehouses (two of which are auto­ mated pallet warehouses, another one is an automated packing unit warehouse) in Higashi Osaka city.

That sizeable capacity means it has the range to fill gaps in product supply. Sunco’s Tomokazu Takada explains further: “As Sunco’s strengths are Japanese Industry Standard (JIS) screws, metric fasteners and ‘small quantity, high variety’, we think we can be useful not as an alternative to existing suppliers but as a means of purchasing fasteners for companies in the US and UK when they need Japanese fasteners which are difficult to supply in the US and UK, buyable from a single place.

“For example, the screws that are used for Japanese bikes and machine tools are very difficult to supply outside Japan.

For this reason, we receive a lot of orders for these products.

We would like to help customers and meet their needs in the UK with our dedicated services.”

Happy to accept smaller orders and supply unusual prod­ ucts to fill gaps, Sunco explains that it has been operating this kind of business model in Japan for some time and is looking to expand it more globally: “We know that fastener companies in the UK have experienced difficulties finding a supplier when customers inquire about Japanese fasteners. Our mission is to increase their business chances by letting them know about Sunco as well as cutting the cost for the existing purchases.

“We know that the demands for these Japanese fasteners are small. These products can be a burden on your stock and can be the products that you do not wish to purchase in a large quantity. We are more than happy to receive inquiries into these products. “You can use us as your storage”.

2 million items As you might expect with its considerable warehousing set up, Sunco offers a wide range in areas including SEMS. “One of our strengths is our wide range of products with over two million items and our immediate stock of 300,000 items. In particular, our ranges of flat washer sizes and SEMS are one of the widest in the world. We have, for example, small screws in increments of 1mm, threaded rods with varying

5mm and products plated with trivalent white. We also deal with the wide range of fine pitch screws.

“Based on our customers’ requests, we are constantly increas­ ing our inventory. Therefore, even if there were no products that you inquired about before, we may have the products when you inquire with us next time. We have been doing this kind of busi­ ness in Japan and we are planning to do the same for overseas companies too. Our motto is “Your special is our standard” and we will do our best to be useful for our customers.”

When products are in stock, depending on the timing of the order, lead times are minimum three days by air and about two weeks by ship, Sunco says.

3Q trio Sunco is not one to shy away from quirky marketing – expect to see the eye­catching mascot ‘socket boy’ if you catch Sunco at a trade show – there’s also a trio of penguins on its logo.

What’s the story behind that? Sunco takes up the story: “They are called “3Q trio” and named after Quality, Quick and Quest.

It represents our philosophy that we can be thanked by our customers for the first time when all the three Qs are satisfied.”

Part of delivering those values comes from Sunco’s extensive relationships. It has around 1,300 suppliers in Japan and Sunco is also organiser of “Sunco kai”, which is the biggest fastener association in Japan. There are 164 companies in the associa­ tion and membership numbers are increasing year­by­year.

Naturally, Sunco’s main target market remains within Japan.

Currently, 99% of its customers are based in Japan: “Overseas expansion is only a part of the expansion of our business model in Japan. We have been expanding the number of our customers and number of products we handle as a risk management by not relying on one industry or one customer.

As a continuation of this expansion, we would like to increase our product lines by answering our customers’ needs.

“We are not planning to open a sales office in the UK. We would like to operate our business like we do in Japan to “coex­

ist and cooperate” with many customers and “respond to their needs”. We found out that there is some demand for Japanese fasteners in the UK but most of these opportunities seem to be lost. By doing business with us, we hope to support British fastener companies to obtain new customers.”

Should potential Sunco customers find themselves in the vicinity of Osaka, visitors are welcome to tour its advanced and automated distribution centre.

ew would deny construction workers do a physical job, but it may come as a shock to hear just how hard the job is on the average pair of construction boots – figures compiled by the Construction Industry Training Board revealed the average distance travelled by construction work­ ers to the site they are working on is 17 miles. he aforementioned value of the hand tool market has an unfortunate side effect – tools remain an attractive target for theft. UK businesses reported £3.5 billion worth of stolen equipment last year and more than a third of van drivers fell victim to thefts, according to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The manufacturer found that almost 50% of van drivers keep more than £2,150 worth of tools in their vans overnight. This means that UK tradespeople alone are risking up to £5 billion in lost equipment. With tool theft at these record breaking levels, anti­tool theft specialist ARMD believes traditional van alarms may not be up to the job of keeping vehicles and the tools inside them, safe.

To show the scale of the problem, ARMD investigated how thieves are gaining entry to commercial vehicles and their precious contents: 1. Peel ’n’ steal: Using sheer brute­force, thieves physically peel back the side doors of van. This technique involves apply­ ing force to the door or window to bend or break it open. It's a quick method that can also be surprisingly quiet, making it less likely to attract attention.

2. Keyless Entry Hacks: The advent of keyless entry systems was seen as a step forward in vehicle security. But thieves have found ways to exploit these systems using electronic devices.

These devices can intercept the signal from the key fob and replicate it to unlock the van without any physical key. This method is particularly concerning because it leaves no signs of forced entry, making it difficult for victims to prove the theft to insurance companies.

3. Tampering with Locks: Another common method is the manipulation or breaking of the van's locks. Thieves may use various tools to pick locks or many resort to drilling them out.

4. Breaking Windows: Thieves may also simply break the van’s windows to gain access. This method is noisy and conspicuous, so it's often used as a last resort or in areas where the thief feels confident they won't be disturbed.

5. Cutting Through the Van: In some cases, especially with high­value targets, thieves might cut through the van’s body to access the cargo area. This requires tools like saws or angle grinders.

A multi-tool blade set is precisely the kind of consumable a trade counter, merchant or tool shop can keep by the counter and inspire some spur-of-the-moment purchases. Tool expert Peter Brett puts Jefferson Tools’ 8-Piece Multi-Tool blade set through its paces…

y first contact with Jefferson Tools was a few years ago – I was given a box of their Mamba work gloves to sample. My first use convinced me – forget those light blue ones most commonly available. The Mamba ones are stronger, stretchier, fit more easily and last many times longer.

A no brainer, even if they cost a bit more.

Eight-piece multi-tool blade set In that spirit I welcomed the Jefferson Tools 8­Piece Multi­Tool blade set. I use my multi­tool a lot. It is a tool that has saved my bacon many times. The downside is sometimes you can get through blades quickly because the cutters work so very hard on a small part of the cutting teeth that they blunt quickly if you push them too hard. When the smoke starts billowing a new approach or a new blade are indicated!

The set consist of 2/34mm coarse timber blades, 2/68mm coarse timber blades, 1/51mm bi­metal blade, 1/40mm bi­metal blade, 1/68mmbi­metal blade and 1/44mm b­metal blade.

The coarse timber blades are as advertised – they cut quickly and leave a rough­ish surface. You can learn some finer skills with a multi­tool that will alleviate the finish a bit. Push­ ing the blade hard is not always the best way!

Bi­metal blades have finer teeth that are located in a hard­ ened steel strip of cutting edge. They are able to cut occasional nails, plastics and copper pipe, for example, and still retain enough edge to cut through wood/ply/plasterboard fairly easily. Frankly, I use a lot of bimetal blades because they are very practical and will usually last longer than much sharper wood­cutting blades.

The Jefferson blades are a universal fit and will fit easily onto non­Starlock adapted multi­tools. The slots in the blade allow for the blade to be set at angles to suit the work and the user. The blades are also well made and welded firmly to the adaptor fixing.

When I was testing these blades I did lots of not following my own advice. I pushed them hard, cut through lots of nails and pushed their cut depth to the maximum. This did result in smoke and some blunting of the teeth but to be honest, that is a realistic taste of what the blades would be asked to do on the jobsite. They performed well – better than some of the manu­ facturers blades I have used. A set of eight will always work out cheaper than buying blades individually, so you know you are getting value for money.

A final addendum Included in the package of blades was a handy little gadget for cutting out the square aperture needed for single plug sockets.

It has four sides of teeth that are curved so that they cut grad­ ually into the plasterboard making it easier to orient the tool and control the cut.

VDE PLIERS: WHERE QUALITY REALLY MATTERS Pliers – particularly for electrical jobs – have to live up to the job and provide adequate protection for end users. Peter Brett conducts a test of Jefferson Tools’ three-piece VDE plier set…

DE pliers are one of those things where quality really matters. Its no use finding out, after an umpteen volt kick, that the quality of the insulation on your pliers is not up to the job. Hence you should always look out for the VDE mark, the voltage protection (usually 1000v) and the GS mark on the tools. This Jefferson set meets all of the above safety crite­ ria and the bright red and yellow handles advertise the fact. The handles themselves feel comfortable and grippy. On each tool there is a nicely shaped ‘ramp’ that prevents thumb and forefin­ ger from sliding forward onto the metal jaws in use.

The Jefferson set is on the upper bracket of the price range (typically £30 to £120 for a set of three – combination, side cutters and long nosed pliers).

Since it is likely that these tools will not only be used for electrical­related tasks, they need to be able to be used as ordi­ nary pliers on occasion. Not recommended, but it happens.

Oh, and because they can be damaged, it is a good idea to replace them when it looks like the insulation has been compromised.

Quality pliers do not have to be ‘worn in’ because the jaws are stiff on the fulcrum. They should come ready to use, the jaws and handles operating freely and there should only be a tiny amount of play at the fulcrum – just enough for free move­ ment. These three Jefferson pliers met that test.

Cutting, Snipping and Gripping Electrical work means a lot of wire snipping so the cutting jaws need to be hard and sharp. Small appliance wires aren’t too much of a problem but bigger appliances with thicker wires and insulation can require a bit more effort. I am pleased to report that the cutting jaws on all three pairs of pliers cut well.

The combination pliers did well with thicker wires, while the long nose pliers were better on smaller wires. The side cutters were great and very quick to use, with sharp jaws and handles that seemed to give just that bit more leverage.

The combination pliers had two gripping areas – the front jaws and just behind it, an oval shaped jaw that could be used for gripping nuts and bolts. The front jaws had no space between top and bottom jaws when closed, so they will grip the smallest wires easily.

The long nose plier’s jaws were also tight together so when using them as intended in limited spaces, they did a good job.

On all counts this Jefferson set seems to meet the brief for a good quality set that can meet the demands of trades that will use them every day and expect them to be reliable and safe – and with a price tag that is eminently reasonable. www.jeffersontools.com

The transparency includes all areas of operations from detailed traceability from batch to box, something that has helped Harrison & Clough customers successfully navigate the introduction of Russian sanctions that requires business to prove their products don’t contain iron or steel originating from Russia.

Customers need only ring their H&C contact to confirm delivery details and the product will be shipped directly to their customers business address. In doing so, it not only ensures a fast and efficient supply of products but also enables customers to reduce their stock holding, with Harrison & Clough effectively acting as a surrogate warehouse for customers.

As part of this initiative, Harrison & Clough has also invested in stock holding so that there is more product available when needed – currently more than 95% of stock is available at any one time. This helps further reduce order time and ensure customers have the product when needed and Harrison & Clough can meet its targets of ensuring next day deliveries on all orders before 4pm, with an increasing number of consign­ ments now delivered pre­1pm.

The company has also taken significant steps to reduce the plastic in its packaging whether by reverting to specially rein­ forced cardboard boxes or replacing the plastic windows on packaging with more product details and measurements on the outside of the boxes.

There are further initiatives scheduled for the company’s warehousing whether in the form of a greater use of renewable technologies, through to increasing the number of electric vehicles the company has in its fleet.

Each of these initiatives can go towards a customer’s own net zero objectives whether a trade customer or an end user looking to deliver a carbon neutral projects.

STEEL SANCTIONS EXPLAINED As the war in Ukraine continues, the UK and other governments are increasing sanctions on Russia to limit its economy. Restrictions have been implemented on the importation of iron and steel products and Ian Worth, Director Customs at Crowe explains the impact that has on businesses and the industry.

Can you explain the current Russian sanctions regarding iron and steel products?

Along with other countries, the UK imposed sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, designed to starve the Russian economy of funding from outside Russia. Amongst the measures implemented were a ban on exports of certain goods to Russia and the imposition of punitive duty rates on goods imported from Russia. On 21 April 2023, the UK announced a further sanction on the import of a range of iron and steel products manufactured in third countries, where their inputs contained iron or steel from Russia. This measure was implemented on 30 September 2023, the same date as a similar measure was implemented by the EU. What businesses/industries are impacted by these sanctions?

In the UK, importers of most iron or steel products, classified in tariff chapters 72 and 73, are now required to obtain evidence that the imported product does not contain iron or steel of Russian origin. Similarly, exporters from the UK to the EU will need to provide evidence to the EU importer, who must satisfy the require­ ments of the EU’s sanction measure. To date we have seen this impact businesses in a range of industries, ranging from steel producers through to retailers and even in the fashion industry.

Is there any expectation that the sanctions could be broadened or changed?

Given the overriding purpose of the sanctions, it is expected that they will continue until there is resolution in Ukraine. At the same time, they will be subject to review in order to measure their effectiveness, with further measures possible in the event that the current measures need strengthening.

What are the repercussions if businesses don’t abide by the sanctions?

The Department of Business and Trade has set up a new Office of Trade Sanctions Implementation (OTSI), with additional headcount to enforce the measures. Non­compliance with sanc­ tions regulations is a criminal offence, where serious infringe­ ments can expect significant penalties, as well as reputational

damage for offending businesses. Goods which are subject to sanctions can expect to be seized and destroyed.

What evidence can people supply to ensure they meet customs requirements for this area?

Firstly, it is important that businesses understand the scope of the measure – it only applies to goods classified in most of tariff Chapter 72 and all of Chapter 73, so the first essential require­ ment is accurate classification. Secondly, the measure cannot be backdated beyond the date it was written into legislation, so in the UK, goods manufactured before 21 April 2023 are out of scope. In the EU, goods manufactured before 23 June 2023

are out of scope – evidence of manufacture before these dates will be helpful. Where goods are in scope, evidence is required that there is no Russian input used in their manufacture. This could be a mill test certificate (MTC) from the manufacturer, or where this cannot be obtained, Customs may accept a decla­ ration from the supplier. The onus is on the importer to hold satisfactory evidence, and to present this on request. It is advised that purchase contracts are renewed to include a requirement that no product contains iron or steel material of Russian origin. The Department of Business and Trade has announced an Open General Licence which should now be used for imports to the UK of returned goods, certain reusable

packaging and goods manufactured before 21 April 2023.

Do you have any examples of people who’ve faced challenges in regards to these sanctions and were they able to overcome them?

It is still relatively early days, but we have seen instances of shipments stopped and evidence requested. In all cases we have seen so far, the importer has been able to provide satis­ factory evidence, however, we expect to see increased activity from OTSI in 2024. www.crowe.co.uk

WHEN BLIND FASTENERS BECOME VISUAL JRP expands its range of rivets in trade and retail bags that are available for in-store merchandising.

KINGFISHER LETS AI LOOSE ON HOME IMPROVEMENT MARKET > We’ve heard a lot about AI lately, perhaps not so much in rela­ tion to the fastener and tool market, but Kingfisher – owner of CC – has changed all that. The group has launched what it says is the first AI­powered assistant in the sector, using generative AI to support customers with their DIY projects. Initially launch­ ing at Castorama France, the virtual assistant answers customer DIY queries and provides step­by­step advice on a range of home improvement projects. Customers can fire off questions like ‘which saw should I choose to cut my worktop’ or similar.

That’s not all – the AI assistant will soon be able to analyse photos to perform visual searches and answer visual queries.

Customers will be able to upload a photo, and use the AI to iden­ tify a particular part, eg “I want to replace this broken part of

my sink, but I don’t know what it’s called”. If successful, it will be rolled out across other banners in the Kingfisher Group.

So far, so DIY. It will probably be a good while – many years, we’d guess – before a professional end user will be able to trust an AI to identify a specific bolt or rivet, but it’s an interesting glimpse at the possibilities ahead for the fastener biz.

Kingfisher went on to say that AI powered recommendation engines at B&Q and Screwfix are already generating up to 10% of e­commerce sales. It’s also using AI­driven tools to optimise markdowns and clearance, with early pilots at B&Q delivery “very encouraging gross margin improvement on clearance products”. www.kingfisher.com

WEST MIDLANDS FASTENERS OPTS FOR PROFIT4 > Halesowen-based West Midlands Fasteners Ltd, a distributor and stockist of industrial fasteners and fixings, is expanding its growing stock of imported products.

The new imported stock range is part of the company’s expansion plans it has achieved thanks to a new software solu­ tion which has reduced admin time and purchase returns, while increasing stock quote and delivery turnarounds, along with revenue for the company.

Competition in the market for super­fast delivery was increasing exponentially with a sharp rise in industrial projects across the UK. As a result, West Midlands Fasteners aims to maximise its sales channels so has invested in a new range of imported products.

To keep on top of increasing customer demand, West Midlands Fasteners has hired additional staff. As a result, the company recognised the need to switch to an alternative software solution that offered a faster way to produce quotes for customers.

“It’s hard to say because we’re only at the beginning of construction,” says Slawomir Iwanicki, export manager at Klimas. “We are currently supplying our WKFC, WKLC, and WKCH screws there in the hundreds of thousands.”

WKFC screws are used for carpentry joints: they join and strengthen wooden structures while protecting them from cracking. WKHC screws are suitable for effective connections of wooden structures. WKLC screws, on the other hand, guar­ antee secure fastening of carpentry fasteners. All this will serve to create one of the most interesting timber develop­ ments on the Danish coast: Marmormolen.

“The most interesting project on the Danish coast” The complex of seven buildings framed in one block, each nine stories high, will be one of the largest contemporary wooden structures in Denmark. It will be completed this year, and its unusual wooden structure will house office, retail and dining spaces, becoming a symbol of urban living on Denmark’s Nordhavn coast.

The entire district is essentially an unusual architectural experiment. Until now treated as rather industrial, it had none of the charm of coastal city neighborhoods.

Recent years, however, have changed the situation, and Copenhagen’s Nordhavn has turned out to be an excellent place for prototypical concepts, including buildings created from recycled bricks.

The Marmormolen complex, built from wood, fits perfectly into this re­created atmosphere of Nordhavn.

Wood – the technology of the future Although wood has so far been rather associated with the past of construction, it is coming back into favour. Especially wood in CLT technology which is created by cross­laminating wood in layers. This creates structural timber, which significantly increases the pace of construction work while being relatively lightweight and at the same time very durable. Technological advancements guarantee precise cutting of the wooden mate­ rial, and the constant development of Klimas product portfolio already makes it possible to deliver the highest quality screws to the construction site, enabling the execution of fast and durable connections of wooden elements.

With the planet in mind The trend back to wood construction also means a huge step toward reducing the carbon footprint of construction. Wood is a material that is definitely at the forefront of the list of sustainable alternatives. Unlike concrete, wood has the prop­ erty of storing CO2, swapping concrete for wood construction therefore means that instead of emitting tons of the harmful gas, the building stores it.

In the case of Marmormolen, the green nature of the devel­ opment is also supported by its surroundings – it will be surrounded on three sides by green urban space, including a planned waterfront park. The building is to include space for a canteen and a public eatery, and terraces and gardens are planned on the roofs. It is there that vegetables are to be produced for the aforementioned eatery, in addition to which biodiversity is also to be found on the rooftops: beehives and insect houses will stand there, in addition to vegetable gardens.

Marmormolen is, therefore, an investment that is a great reference for Klimas products, both because of the company’s activities promoting wood construction in Central and Eastern European countries and because of its sustainable nature. klimas.com

HEICO GROUP INTENDS TO INCREASE ITS PRESENCE ON THE BENELUX MARKET Despite the border of the Benelux states just 1-2 hours by car from HEICO’s headquarter near Dortmund, the German manufacturer of bolt locking devices and pre-tensioning solutions has its own subsidiary in the Netherlands.

ince more than 120 years, the HEICO Group produces high quality product solutions in the field of fastening and cold forging technology.

During the last decade HEICO has grown up with its HEICO­LOCK® wedge locking systems and HEICO­TEC® tensioning systems to become an expert for bolt technology.

Its products are globally sold through a large network of dealers and trading part­ ners. Especially in the trader­oriented market of the Benelux states, HEICO coop­ erates with many well­known dealers.

In addition to that, HEICO operates 14 company­owned subsidiaries worldwide.

One of them is settled in Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands. From here, the company supports and supplies its Dutch customers as well as their customers in Luxemburg and Belgium. “

Business is hard and margins are very tight,” says a candid David Mulnard, CEO of Haemers. “Competitors in Asia are pushing prices to crazy levels, to a totally unfair level,” he adds.

Based in Gullegem, Belgium, close to Kortrijk and a stone’s throw from the French border, Haemers is one of the market leaders in the production of press­ work and washers. The manufacturer has what it says is the largest range of non­ standard sizes of washers which today covers more than a huge 5,800 sizes.

Founded in 1932, Haemers specialises in pressing work from plates and coils. With extensive machinery that includes up to 400 tons pressing force, the producers also

has fully automated pressing lines up to 160 tons. Mulnard says: “In washers, our strength is that every size can be produced

Currently, the majority of Haemers busi­ ness is done abroad – 65% of its business

leaves Belgium, and it delivers across the whole of Europe. Clearly though, as refer­ enced above, the market has been easier.

“In my opinion, the Benelux market is largely the same as the entire European Union. We see competitive prices, little demand, a slowing construction econ­ omy… Steel prices have fallen, but at a level where factories are making losses, this will certainly change in the coming months. We feel that factories and suppliers are doing everything they can to raise prices.”

That’s due in part to sustainability projects, says Mulnard: “The investments for these factories in the coming years will therefore be enormous to achieve climate objectives.

“We expect a turnaround again because of the CBAM. We naturally hope for an improvement in our sales. And a slightly fairer competition.”

CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) has been designed to put a fair price on the carbon emitted during the production of carbon intensive goods that are entering the EU – and encourage cleaner industrial production in non­EU countries. With the EU raising its carbon ambitions, CBAM is intended to prevent ‘carbon leakage’, where EU products get replaced by more carbon­intensive imports.

And it’s fair to say global trade has had an interesting few years, not least exposing the vulnerabilities of the international supply chain. From the pandemic days of container price inflation to problems in the Suez Canal with stranded and impounded

container ships and – more recently – Red Sea disruption forcing ships to reach Europe via the longer route around the Cape of Good Hope peninsula, adding weeks to lead times. The discussion around ‘reshoring’ and ‘onshoring’ promises has returned to prominence faster than many may have expected. But have those discus­ sions of sourcing product from closer loca­ tions materialised in practice?

“We have certainly seen this in custom pressing work. And we keep seeing it.

Many customers have chosen to have at least part of their production returned to Europe. This way they have more certainty.

“We of course also enjoyed this for two years in the washers market, though we have seen that these types of products are being sourced again in the Far East. The anti­dumping measures were partly nulli­

fied by Chinese support, but that is why we have good hope with the CBAM story.

Competing with completely dissimilar weapons is unfeasible.

“Even though we see a decline in demand in 2023, there is still a part of the market that has not forgotten the prob­ lems of Covid and Suez...”

“Haemers is absolutely not against imports,” he clarifies. “Everyone can have a piece of the pie. Only it can be distributed more fairly.”

Market challenges aside, Haemers continues to invest in internal processes and developments: “In 2023, we installed a new fully automatic deburring line, which will be fed in the future by an AGV robot. So, no operator will be needed at all.

We have also equipped a pressing line with a cobot to work fully automatically and even outside opening hours.”

Every tool is made in­house at Haemers and the manufacturer is looking to invest further in this area, expanding its tool­ shop in the next 12 months or so, as well as more general investments including installing solar panels.

ast year saw Fanny Bülte, grand­ daughter of the founder of Bülte, take over the business from her father, Stefan Bülte.

Almost 70 years since Norbert Bülte set up offices in Lüdinghausen, this new chap­ ter for the business, has this year seen a new MD installed at Bülte Plastiques France.

Florian Kmyta, who has been with the company for several years, was appointed Managing Director with effect from 1January 2024.

During his many years with the company, he was given the opportunity to take a master's degree in management thanks to his hard work and perseverance. He has been the driving force behind the company's attractive sales policy for the last eight years, along­ side Mrs Fanny Bülte.

He took over the areas of sales, market­ ing and digital business alongside Fanny Bülte, the third generation of the company. Mr Kmyta will help to drive Bülte’s success in providing a global offer­ ing of solutions – developed to meet the needs of all its customers.

he saying goes, "Everybody can tighten a bolt," but a properly designed joint involves a multitude of factors, from preload and friction to tool calibration, settlements and dynamic loads.

While the requirements for welded joints have evolved steadily over the years, to the point where it’s now common to have certified professionals to execute and approve welded joints, a simple bolting protocol from anyone is sufficient for critical bolted joints. Unfortunately, even this minor requirement is not always available.

The fact that critical bolted joints are not subjected to simi­ lar quality requirements as welded joints can lead to problems in steel construction. The biggest risk in steel construction from unsecured bolted joints subjected to any kind of dynamic loads is the loss of preload and loosening which could lead to several negative consequences, such as production downtime and unintended movements. So, the purposeful and sensible choice of one or more measures is one of the many responsible decisions of the designing engineer.

Challenges: Preload, Slackening, and Self-Loosening The design principle in steel construction is historically

from a rivet. Having remained unchanged, most steel bolts are designed non­preloaded. This runs contrary to the design principle of a bolt itself, where you always want to leverage the benefits of proper clamping and pretensioning.

Loss of preload in bolted joints can occur due to slack­ ening or self­loosening. These two phenomena are explored in detail during our steel construction webinars.

Solutions: Nord-Lock Washers and European Standards In general, overcoming slackening involves implementing design principles, but self­loosening can be solved with Nord­ Lock washers. The washers are validated as an effective securing element for bolted joints by European Technical Assessments (ETAs).

Selco college partnership backs tradespeople of the future

elping to support apprentices and tradespeople in training is among the worthwhile endeavours Selco Builders Warehouse is involved in.

Via a colleges partnership, Selco has donated thousands of pounds worth of materials to college students studying trade and construction courses around the country.

Students have also been invited into Selco branches to learn more about how a builders' merchant operates and the relationship it has with tradespeople.

West London College, Leeds College of Building, Exeter College, Bournemouth and Poole College and Birmingham Metropolitan College are amongst the education establishments partnering with us on the scheme.

Each college has received £3,000 worth of materials and its students are currently undertaking at least three visits to their local Selco branches.

In 2024, West London College will receive an additional £5,000 of materials to continue supporting its ‘Green Skills’ courses as part of its offering around sustainability, a key pillar of Selco’s long­ term strategy.

Enda Mulloy, deputy head of construc­ tion at West London College, said: “The Selco partnership is proving a fantastic initiative and an absolutely invaluable experience for our learners.

“A builders' merchant plays such a significant role in the life of a tradesper­ son that introducing our learners to them so early in their careers will stand them in really good stead.

“The materials and tools that Selco has kindly donated has also been an incredible help. We want our learners to carry out as much practical work as possible but that comes at a significant cost which we wouldn’t be able to meet without donations such as the one Selco has made.

“We can’t thank Selco enough for the work it is doing with our college and others around the UK and the signifi­ cant difference it is making to the future of the industry.”

Sandvik Coromant helps students make the cut at MACH lso lending support to future tradespeo­ ple and engineers is Sandvik Coromant, which will be headline sponsor of the MACH 2024 Education & Development Zone.

The global metalcutting specialist has sponsored the Zone since its inception at MACH 2012 and is part of its efforts to inspire the next generation of engineers to join the manufacturing technologies sector.

The E&D Zone is the educational hub at MACH 2024 and is designed for students keen to explore what engineering­ based manufacturing can offer them as a future career.

As part of these tours, students learn more about the latest manufacturing technologies being devel­ oped and deployed in UK industry and get to learn about potential career paths and opportunities ­ even providing guidance on the manufacturing and engineering compa­ nies that are recruiting UK apprentices.

Commenting on Sandvik Coromant’s involvement with the E&D Zone, James Selka DL, CEO at the Manufacturing Tech­ nologies Association (MTA), who own and organise MACH 2024 said: “Attracting new talent into the engineering­based manu­ facturing sector is a key driver for the MTA. The dedicated E&D Zone at MACH contin­

ues to be our biggest opportunity to inspire a future generation into engineer­ ing as an exciting career.”

With over 3,000 students in the key age range of 11­18 expected to attend the event this year, MACH 2024 promises to provide lots for them to see and experience with interactive activities organised by key contributors including F1 in Schools, Univer­ sity of Wolverhampton Racing, Vex Robotics and the National Physical Laboratory.
