THERE’S A LOT TO REPORT

When disruption comes to your door, it’s usually unwelcome (though you could argue that it usually presents some business opportunities), but if you’re writing or talking about the industry, it means there’s been no shortage of talking points.

Some are familiar – container prices incredibly high again? Check. Customers nevertheless craving stock and availability when they want? Check. Acquisitions in full flow? Check.

That list of acquisitions in recent months has been surprisingly long; the ever-acquisitive Atlas Copco has been picking up firms in Europe, Lesjöfors Group purchased Clifford Springs, Bossard acquired Dejond, Threaded Fasteners bought Ricco Fasteners, Mecavit was acquired (p84), and those are just the ones that spring to mind. Geo-politically, there’s been some settling down in terms of getting elections out the way in Europe, Taiwan, India, Pakistan and elsewhere. Clearly the US elections still loom large and with their potential to shift the world trading status quo these will be keenly eyed. On the topic of global developments, there are shifts underway in the supply chain, some of which we tackle in our big ‘Territory Focus – Asia’ feature (p53).

You may argue that 2024 is no more disrupted than any other and you might be right, but there’s clearly no shortage of developments to stay abreast of and we at Torque Magazine will do our utmost to keep you up to date with industry updates that matter. If you’d like us to share your news or opinions on the industry, let us know at the usual email address.

As part of our commitment to the environment, Torque Magazine is fully recyclable.

THE ONLY CE-MARKED SECURING WASHERS

The CE marking is everywhere. But it’s only now that you’ll find it on one type of securing washers.

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

JO MORRIS FASTENER TRAINING INSTITUTE

Involved in the fastener industry since graduating from university, The Fastener Training Institute’s Marketing Director and soon to be new Managing Director, Jo Morris, has worn many hats and juggled many tasks and roles throughout her career. She talks to Torque Magazine about the fastener industry and why she is passionate about education.

How did you get into the industry?

After graduating as a business major from Arizona State University, I had two options – a pharmaceutical job in Texas or a fastener job in Arizona. My boyfriend at the time was in Arizona, so I took the fastener job. I was an administrative assistant doing entrylevel sales. It was a tremendous opportunity to learn from the ground up and I’ve been in the industry ever since.

What does your day-to-day job involve?

As marketing director for Fastener Training Institute (FTI) and coowner of Desert Distribution, my days are full! For FTI, I plan the annual training schedule, develop course curriculum, coordinate with instructors, manage marketing and event planning and find new ways and methods for training. Our new initiatives include offering Spanish courses and implementing a Learning Management System. With Desert Distribution, I work with distributors and endusers to determine applicationspecific needs for fasteners and help supply teams source parts. I’m involved across departments, including quality and engineering, with the fastener lines we represent.

What prompted your involvement in FTI?

John Wachman was my first boss, and in 2014, he was FTI’s inaugural board president. At the time, I had preschoolaged triplets and was working many hours as a sales manager for a large fastener distributor. He offered me a parttime job to launch the first FTI webinar. I worked with the late Joe Greenslade, who at the time was Director of Technology for the Industrial Fasteners Institute, and together we created a 90minute webinar called Thread Fit Matters. It was a huge success. After that, I helped

create the overall online presence and it became more than a fulltime job. Now I help run it all and I’m honoured to say I’ll become FTI’s new Managing Director in August.

What do you like most about being involved in education & training in the fastener industry?

I like having the opportunity to give back to the industry. I love being able to meet manufacturers and distributors and get to know the engineers who use our parts. We have attendees from the biggest OEMs in the country like John Deere, SpaceX and Blue Origin. The people who are really using fasteners – a lot are engineers – are coming to our classes to learn about fasteners, because when you are in school, they don’t teach fasteners. Being involved in training has really opened my eyes to the limitless opportunities you can have in the fastener industry.

There is no UK equivalent of FTI, how important do you see networks are for developing, training and retaining talent in the industry?

It is extremely important. FTI started in the early ’70s as part of the old Los Angeles Fastener Association. The founding organisers realised that, individually, no one really had the capacity to train their employees but if they came together collectively, some solid educational programs could evolve. That’s how the first fastener basics class originated. From there, FTI has really grown. If we continue to combine the efforts of our industry’s most experienced and talented people, we can continue creating great resources. Networking and associations are huge for large companies, small companies, new people in the industry and growing within our industry – it’s really an integral part.

What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry since you started?

I think the technology overall has been wonderful. When I started, we wrote pick tickets and orders by hand and managed inventory with index cards. I just hope with technology we don’t migrate to a parts number system. To learn and grow, we need to get our hands dirty – hold the part, understand how it’s made, what can go wrong when it’s made – and understand real world applications. Technology is great, it helps with inventory and order entry, but we can’t get away from understanding the attributes of a part and only know them as a number or SKU.

Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far?

The first is my sales support role where we supplied millions of fasteners to a very large airbag manufacturer. I was the grunt and tasked to do it all. I saw how parts were made, packed and delivered to the line. I learned about quality by sorting bad parts in a hot warehouse and I learned to understand and review PPAP. In this role, I learned every level of the fastener process from inception, design, sources, samples, manufacturing, distribution. I’ll always be grateful for that opportunity.

Next is FTI and all the people I have met – those new to the industry, engineers, quality specialists, buyers, OEMs and the experts teaching our classes. Some of our instructors are so colourful and the best education happens when they just share lessons learned. FTI has allowed me to get involved in regional and national associations like NFDA, MWFA, PacWest, SWFA, and IFI. There are just so many highlights with FTI and I know there will be many more to come.

Finally, it was a huge honour to be recognised as the 2021 Woman in Business by Women In The Fastener Industry (WIFI) and it was an honour when a young female fastener professional recently reached out for mentorship. Being seen as a leader and to offer pearls of wisdom to others is incredibly meaningful.

What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry?

The camaraderie and networking. We all stay together. The big joke is that once you are in the fastener industry, you never leave – and it’s so true! We love to see each other succeed. There is no cap. It’s a special industry.

What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the fastener industry?

I think highlighting women, such as with this article, is a great way. Right now, there are some incredibly impressive female executives in the industry. Highlighting them and their success provides other women with a glimpse into the future for their careers. A few colleagues I look up to include the impressive and fearless Simmi Sakhuja and Jennifer Sturm and upandcomers Holly McDaniel and Dianna Barnes.

If you could, what piece of advice would you give your younger self as you started working in the fastener industry?

Stay the course, you are on the right track. I’d say to keep your eyes open, listen and do what you are told. Your future looks very bright. I’m incredibly thankful for every opportunity given to me. I’ve had the honour to work under some incredible leaders and mentors and I wouldn’t change a thing. I love my life, my career path and how it has all evolved.

THE QUALITY FACTOR

Along with availability and – of course – price, quality is one of the very core factors for any business in the fastener and tool world. Torque Magazine rounds-up news and developments in this crucial area…

SWEDISH BOLT MAKER SELECTS GI-360T >

General Inspection of Michigan USA recently installed a Gi360T highspeed automotive bolt inspection system in Sweden. This Gi360T is equipped with multiple lasers, cameras, as well as EddyCurrent to provide complete dimensional inspection, damage detection, cracked heads and presence of heattreatment for a full range of automotive bolts (up to 35mm diameter and up to 150mm total length).

In terms of dimensional inspection, the Gi360T comes standard with multiple lasers to measure profile features (360 degrees) including threads, lengths, diameters, straightness and angles. Parts are measured to print specifications through Gi’s user friendly software, each dimension is saved and recalled by part number for fast part to part changeover.

In addition to dimensional inspection, the Gi360T laser technology detects damaged threads, rifled hex, and bent parts. The system is also equipped with two cameras; one to detect cracks, and the other to detect defective recesses

Defect detection, flexibility and inspection rates helped swing the deal with the Swedish bolt manufacturer

(chipped punch). The cameras are each equipped with advanced lighting, custom optics, and unique software algorithms developed by Gi for easy programming.

Gi’s EddyCurrent system is used to detect the presence of heattreatment. The completely digital system comes with adjustable frequencies, a complex impedance plane setup for quick programming and setup storage, and autobalancing EddyCurrent coils.

After searching the world for an inspection system with complete dimensional inspection, visual defect detection capabilities, and EddyCurrent for detecting the presence of heattreatment, the Swedish bolt manufacturer selected Gi. Defect detection, flexibility and inspection rates (up to 300 parts per minute) were the deciding factors.

QC LABS & INSPECTION

Earlier this year, at Control 2024, the Kistler Group presented new, adaptable quality inspection and assembly solutions. Visitors saw Kistler’s new Multicapture Device for precise optical lateral surface inspection with short cycle times. There were also customisable combinations of automation and inspection solutions, precisely controllable assembly systems for highly complex processes and technical innovations for fastening technology.

Those solutions for fastening technology included the cerTEST inspection system and the caliTESTB calibration device, which promise to offer easy, standardcompliant testing and calibration of torque tools, as required by the automotive and aviation industries or in the construction sector.

cerTEST allows mobile testing in a range from 0.2 to 500 Nm with up to four integrated fastening simulators. Torque tools like cordless, rotary and impulse screwdrivers can be tested in accordance with standards such as VDI/VDE 2645 Sheet 2, VDI/VDE 2647 or DIN EN ISO 5393, even directly in the assembly line. With caliTESTB, Kistler displays a calibration device for torque wrenches or tools with an effective length of up to 1320 mm. Thanks to individually usable sensors, these can be calibrated in a range between 0.2 and 1,000 Nm in accordance with DIN EN ISO 6789. The userfriendly CEUS software guides users step by step through the measurement on both devices, it saves different measurement settings and histories and it automatically creates test reports.

// Kistler generates high-resolution test images with one camera per mirror to ensure that even the smallest defects are visible. //

Also new from Kistler was a new Multicapture Device in the KVC 821 optical quality inspection system. Thanks to eight mirrors arranged in a circle, the camera station captures the entire lateral surface of the test part. Deformations such as scratches or dents are therefore detected without the parts having to be mechanically rotated. This means that parts with highquality requirements can be inspected in a single pass, allowing cycle times of up to 400 parts per minute. Kistler generates highresolution test images with one camera per mirror to ensure that even the smallest defects are visible, and identifies them with their own image processing software KiVision. With the help of algorithms based on artificial intelligence, the software also detects previously unknown anomalies. Kistler’s latest can demonstrate how different requirements in optical quality assurance can be handled by showcasing its complete imaging portfolio. The KVC 821 can be equipped with 2D, 2.5D as well as 3D inspection methods. www.kistler.com

FISCHER: SHAPING THE FUTURE OF CONSTRUCTION

Wood is more popular than ever, whether in prefabricated houses or multistorey buildings. It’s no wonder, as it’s a natural product with many advantages. The renewable resource is climate neutral and offers excellent physical properties, a high degree of prefabrication, excellent insulating properties, a healthy indoor climate, a unique look and is quick to process. Wood can be processed safely, quickly and flexibly with fischer’s PowerFast II and PowerFull II wood construction screws.

Wood screws by fischer are an efficient and costeffective alternative to conventional fastenings in structural timber construction and feature a European Technical Assessment (ETA).

Quick and flexible connections in wood construction fischer’s new PowerFast II wood construction screw enables many different designs. With its partial thread, the screw firmly expands or pulls wood components together. Applications include wood on wood and metal on wood connections. In addition to the types of solid wood, wood materials and veneer specified in the ETA, the PowerFast II screw is also suitable for applications in fischer plugs with load values recommended by fischer. Its many different head types provide added flexibility, with available options including stepped countersunk, countersunk, disc heads and a hexagon head with a pressedon washer. The innovative stepped countersunk head can be fully inserted into the wood, allowing fixtures to be screwed in flush and wood structures to be added as superstructures. Depending on the version, users can implement mulliontransom or rafterpurlin connections, fasten metal rails to wood substructures and much more. Possible applications include rooftop insulation, facades, roof trusses and carports. The ETA provides added safety. With its three ribs, the screw tip ensures a quick bite while simultaneously providing a predrilling function. This makes it easier to place the screw and significantly reduces its splitting behaviour in the material. The higher thread pitch reduces the time it takes to insert the screw. As a result, users successfully complete their projects quicker and more costeffectively. A combination of redesigned shaft ribs and the perfectly coordi

nated core milling thread geometry reduces the screwin torque, saving time and effort during installation. The highperformance wax coating additionally reduces the screwin torque, ensuring a longer battery life with smooth and even insertion.

The innovative and patented coremilling geometry provides precise positioning and finish milling while the wood dust is conveniently removed. Thanks to this feature, the PowerFast II screw can also be used in low edge and axial spacing, enabling even more wood designs. A tangential impact screwdriver can be used to insert the wood construction screw, making installation even more convenient. Depending on the version, the new PowerFast II screw is available in diameters of 8 to 12.

Cost-effective connections for load-bearing wood structures

fischer’s PowerFull II premium full thread screw with diameters of 6 to 10mm is ideal for wood on wood and sheet steel

The fischer PowerFast II wood construction screw can be used to install rooftop insulation to reduce thermal loss and save heating costs

on wood connections. In addition to conventional softwoods, the wood construction screw is also suitable for use in solid woods. Thanks to its optimised head and thread geometry, the latest PowerFull II generation is ideal for processing while ensuring maximum force transmission, ensuring installation requires little effort and battery power. Its unique countersunk head with mill pockets below the head is ideal for fastening metal components to wood, preventing fixtures from being damaged by reaming. A version with a

cylinder head also features mill pockets that allow the screw to be neatly sunk into the fastening substrate.

The 10mm screw variants have a drill tip that creates a predrilling effect without causing the long screws to slip, reducing the risk of splitting the wood and lowering the turning torque. This also enables low edge and axial spacing.

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION

EUROTEC: INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR TIMBER

In modern construction, where sustainability and efficiency are always the focus of attention, wood has gained importance as a building material. In this context, the ecological building material crosslaminated timber (CLT) is becoming increasingly popular. Due to its strength and dimensional stability, CLT enables the fast and precise prefabrication of building components in factory environments, which can then be used in modular construction to assemble entire building parts on site. In this respect, Eurotec would like to contribute to strengthening timber construction with CLT and has dealt intensively with fastening and anchoring systems for prefabricated timber elements.

The right connectors for timber engineering

Due to its various characteristics and advantages, the field of application of CLT extends over many areas. It allows the construction of complete buildings as well as multistorey residential buildings, whereby all essential components – walls, ceilings, and roofs – are manufactured using just one building material. Cross laminated timber also offers excellent sound and thermal insulation, making it suitable for largescale projects such as commercial and industrial construction as well as extensive bridge construction. The CLT construction primarily impresses with the short and uncomplicated assembly time of the prefabricated wood elements. With selected fastening and anchoring techniques, Eurotec supplies tailormade system solutions that are adapted to the requirements of CLT construction and cover all complex areas of timber engineering.

Optimum load distribution and the absorption of tensile and shearing forces are essential for many projects. The company offers a variety of solutions for highly stressed wood connections of all kinds: special system angles, shear angles for woodwood or woodconcrete connections and tie rods have been specifically designed for applications with CLT and make wood construction work considerably easier. In addition, the

Eurotec CLT inside corner fastening two wall elements with wooden floor of upper storey

company also offers pull tabs to absorb tensile forces. These are suitable for connections on wood as well as on concrete and steel. With products such as the CLT system angle or the CLT inside corner, complex connections can be created that enable transmission of major forces. Tension straps, shearing plates and standardised timber construction screws are also part of the essential modular connectors, which are characterised by their wide range of applications. Wood connectors of this type not only bring a very effective, but also an economic advantage. Important information about products such as wood connectors and screws as well as technical details can now be found in Eurotec’s detailed CLT brochure.

ASIA TERRITORY FOCUS

As the world looks beyond China to diversify its supply chain, manufacturers, suppliers and distributors from other parts of Asia are stepping up to show what they are capable of.

ASIA TERRITORY FOCUS

SUNCO

Sunco Industries was founded in 1946 as a wholesaler specialising in wooden screws. It started as a general trading company selling fasteners and related products but has recently moved into nonfastener related items such as protective equipment and safety shoes. Working with more than 1300 suppliers, Sunco currently has over 300,000 products in stock and is constantly adding new items to ensure it can meet the demands of customers, claiming “there is nothing we don’t have.”

With sales figures approaching 36 billion yen last year, Sunco has over 800 employees working across its multiple locations in Osaka and Tokyo. While Japan has been its primary market, the company is looking to expand its reach and broaden its customer base. The dedicated International Trade team are happy to help distributors and users worldwide with their enquiries.

Osaka is the central hub for fastener manufacturing in Japan, meaning Sunco’s facilities are wellpositioned for ease of access to about 300 local manufacturers. The stateoftheart East Osaka Distribution Centre processes around 35,000 orders per day from around 2,000 companies, totalling around 1.8 million products.

Sunco has automated various aspects of its warehousing operations for around 30 years, with multiple advancements in the systems, space and capabilities over that

time. The company prides itself on remaining at the forefront of technology, efficiency and accuracy with plans to trial the use of robots in the near future. Whether it’s small singular items through to large pallets, different processes from packing, sorting and bagging are automated. The external warehouses located around the logistics centre stock around 28,000 pallets with over 550,000 cartons, and two of the warehouses are fully automated through online instruction from the computers in Sunco’s head office.

To maintain accuracy of the items being shipped from the external warehouses, barcode scanners are used to check each of the items in the order. First, barcodes with information on customer orders are scanned. Next, the ITF barcode attached to each case of goods is scanned. If the wrong item is scanned, the barcode scanner will display an error message. If the scanned item is correct, shipping labels are attached to the boxes. Finally, the products are delivered to the shipping companies.

The distribution centre is also equipped with an automatic box sealing machine to simplify packing and packaging operations. Alternatively, items can be repackaged and bagged as per the customer’s request.

Sunco can ensure the quality of the products in stock through its Quality Assurance Control Office. There are 10 types of inspections available including hexagonal nut and the screw inspection machines, tensile testing, spectrometer and even camera dimension measuring machines, all of which are used to check the quality of Sunco branded goods.

So, whether it is JIS standard items, nuts, bolts, screws, safety equipment or one of its many other items, Sunco will promptly deliver the highest quality fasteners and make happy happen for its customers wherever they are in the world.

SHUENN CHANG FA

Shuenn Chang Fa Enterprise Co., Ltd (SCF) has 40 years of experience manufacturing long length screw parts in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. The diameter ranges from M3 to M12 and the length from 10mm to 1000mm. SCF has acquired IATF 16949, ISO 14001, ISO/IEC 17025, ETA18/1100, DUNS #656265279, and ISO 140641. The company has been working on “Twin Green & Digital Transition” or now as “Digital and Sustainable (Twin) Transformations” and the results are notable for a small to medium enterprise (SME).

SCF has prioritised sustainability since 2004 when they achieved ISO 14001 certification. As part of its environmental

initiatives, SCF has its own Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Removal Plan. After 2015 the Paris Agreement, SCF provided the power, water and waste data based on CDP to customers who want to make the world a better place. In 2018, SCF believed saving energy and energy efficiency would be key to helping the planet. From 2019 to 2023, SCF saved 226,379 KhW, which is a reduction of 113.606 Ton·CO2e. How was SCF able to achieve such a huge amount of GHG removal? SCF generated about 2,300 ~ 2,800 Ton·CO2e per year and made it a goal to reduce 1% power every year. The results did not include other steps such as moving forklifts from diesel to electric, the power coming from solar panels and

waste recycling. At the same time, SCF studied ESG which allowed the company to apply for ISO 140641. SCF then became one of leading ESG factories in Taiwan and now is working on ESG that fits GRI rules.

SCF knew sustainability would become a key to success in the future. SCF also understood that industry emissions needed to be reduced and participated in both regulated and voluntary programs to reduce power consumption. SCF is looking for customers with the same philosophy. Sustainability is a continuous journey, not just for SCF, but for everyone.

UNIVERSAL PRECISION SCREWS: QUALITY, INVESTMENT & HUGE POTENTIAL ASIA > INDIA

Fresh from exhibiting at the UKset Farnborough International Airshow this July, Universal Precision Screws (UPS) is flying high. The UK is just one of many territories that the sizeable fastener manufacturer is now exporting to, a list that includes North America, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, UK, Switzerland, France, Austria, Denmark, China, Australia and Singapore, to name a few.

Likewise, aerospace is one of a number of sectors that UPS serves with its ranges. That breadth of markets also includes automotive, renewable energy, defence, industrial, and mould and die.

UPS has a substantial internal infrastructure to supply those markets. The considerably large business, which formed in 2006, has three manufacturing facilities, equalling a 50,000 m² area, with a total 12,000 metric ton installed capacity. Its breadth of facilities includes recent additions including a heat treatment furnace & automatic plating plant, established in 2022.

Other recent developments have seen UPS funding work in 3D printing and it will be buying multispindle Swiss machines from Tornos to enhance its existing capacity in precise machining components.

Universal Precision Screws has the inspection and testing facilities to back up its quality credentials and certifications –of which there are many, including certifications from ISO, IATF, NADCAP (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors), ECOVADIS, RDSO (Research Design and Standards Organisation), PED (Pressure Equipment Directive), to name a few. UPS’ chemical and metallurgical test facilities are backed by metrological test facilities, fluorescent penetrant inspection equipment and much more.

India market insights

UPS tells Torque Magazine that conditions for the fastener business are positive in India right now. Firstly, there is strong economic growth, with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) increasing the GDP forecast

for FY 20242025 to 8.1%. There’s been monthonmonth increases in Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection, which has in turn given extra room for the government to spend on infrastructure development and other projects which boost growth.

There have been some notable developments in terms of sectors too – not least automotive. The auto industry has recorded increased growth from the last three years, largely in the passenger vehicle segment. OEM companies like Maruti, Hyundai, Tata and Mahindra are spending to increase their production capacities and Tier1 companies are increasing their capacities. There’s also the fact that India is becoming a global supplier base for European and USAbased automotive companies and to prove it, Indian automotive components manufacturing companies have recorded five times growth in the last five years in export to Europe and the USA.

Other broader trends – like a China+1 policy – and norms from the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) are helping locali

Universal Precision Screws (UPS) provides Torque Magazine with an update on its progress and evolution as well as an on-the-ground insight into its home market in India…

sation of automotive parts, in turn increasing demand.

And more broadly still, UPS points to stability in government helping boost investor confidence and attract investors to invest in India. There are other unique factors at play with India too, including at least one huge contrast with much of Europe – India is a young country with the world’s largest population (now surpassing China’s). So, the demand and potential is huge. Therefore, there’s manpower available – including skilled and technical – to meet the requirements of the fastener industry at a reasonable cost.

There are challenges in India of course (we’ll get to them shortly), but UPS also points to another set of advantages for business in the territory: Urbanisation and people’s buying power has substantially increased in the past decade, the fact it is the fastest growing economy in the world and also that language is not a problem for global companies.

There’s no immunity from those collec

tive challenges facing many businesses and economies, however. Familiar issues like those related to the current situation in the Red Sea and other global supply chain problems play their role, as well as other geopolitical issues including war.

There are also reported long government approvals when setting up new manufacturing plants and the Foreign Direct Investment Policy of India, shaken up in 2020, also has come in for some criticism. Likewise, BIS norms to qualify products hasn’t been smooth sailing.

Targeting growth

Aside from seeking to expand in business terms, UPS also looks to make gains in terms of positive social initiatives, including a sizeable tree growing project it has been running since 2013. In that year, UPS opted to dedicate itself to running a tree plantation project annually. With the support of the community, UPS identifies various planting sites such as schools, colleges, parks and government institu

// India is becoming a global supplier base for European and USA-based automotive companies. //

Universal Precision Screws has three manufacturing facilities and has invested in heat treatment and 3D tech

tions in Rohtak and nearby villages. UPS’ plantation team visits these sites to carry out the planting activities. Notably, the firm also ensures that the site owners and organisations take responsibility for the ongoing care and maintenance of the plants. Tree species that provide the highest oxygen output are selected.

In addition, UPS has adopted many roads starting from the entrance of the city and planted trees and tree guards to help maintain these trees. In 2023, UPS planted 7,000 trees and this year the target is to finish 2024 with 10,000 trees planted.

Looking further ahead, UPS has a place booked at Fastener Fair Global in Stuttgart next March, as well as some major plans in the works: “We are investing more in new plant and machinery. We had a groundbreaking ceremony of our new plant early this year. The total land area will be 60,000 m² and construction work is expected to be complete by the end of 2025.”

EXPANSION PLANS FOR THS

TThe Taiwan Hardware Show continues its expansion growth path for the 2024 edition as the new co-located show Refrigeration & HVAC TAIWAN is introduced to the line-up to meet the demand for engineering product expertise in the segment.

he Taiwan Hardware Show (THS), the hardware show organised in the home ground of Asia’s most competitive hardware manufacturing market – Taipei, Taiwan, is scheduled to be held from the 23 to 25 October at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, as announced by its organiser, Kaigo Co; Ltd. Amplifying its objectives to facilitate regional trade flow by ‘Bridging Borders, Empowering Supply Chains in Taiwan,’ THS will build on its successful path to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities as Taiwanese companies serve global partners better and with more innovative products marked with trusted quality standards.

This 24th edition of the TAIWAN HARDWARE SHOW in 2024 will see an expanded show floor with the introduction of another colocated new show; the first Refrigeration & HVAC TAIWAN RHVAC – the dedicated trade platform for Taiwan’s refrigeration, heating, ventilation and airconditioning sector. iMT Taiwan – the International Metal Technology Taiwan and TSAFE – the Occupational Safety Show for Taiwan will continue their colocation with THS for their 9th and 2nd editions respectively. Together, the four synergistic shows will deliver a wholesome manufacturing focused trade platform for suppliers and distributors to sell or buy indemand production and engineering technologies from reliable Taiwanese manufacturers with multisector product deliverables.

Kaigo Co; Ltd and THS Executive Director, Alexander Keim, says: “THS’s decadeslong success in identifying growth sectors within Taiwan’s hardware market and its verticals across different application sectors as well as linear manufacturing value chain has organically paved the need for new dedicated shows to be developed. iMT Taiwan, TSAFE and Refrigeration & HVAC TAIWAN all stemmed from THS’ expansive product categories ranging from power tools, fastener and fittings, machinery and plant equipment plus other related exhibits that consistently score top buy interest and sourcing target quantities.”

According to Statista Market Insights Dec 2023 report, Taiwan’s the Hardware & Building Materials market is projected to generate a revenue of US$8.55bn in 2024 and will continue to experience an annual growth rate of 4.51% (CAGR 20242028). The growing demand for housing and lateral need for home renovation locally as well as in neighbouring Asian markets or further across Europe and the Americas will

drive Taiwan's hardware and building materials market upwards as Taiwanese manufacturers gain more supply demands due to their advanced manufacturing capabilities and quality product innovations.

“THS’ patterned success mirrors the market positive trajectory as we are on track to achieve 15% growth in exhibitor participation, with an 84% rate of returning exhibiting companies from the 2023 edition. The presale privileges for early booth signups have been fully exhausted so this gives us good indication that companies are enthusiastic about the sales return of investment of their participation at THS 2024,” says Keim. He also drew upon the parallel strategy of exhibiting companies to boost their brand visibility and optimising access to new global customers through participation at a dedicated trade show like THS where they will meet genuine buyers and distribution partners who are confident of Taiwan’s manufacturing performance and supply operations. Confirmed exhibiting companies with outstanding booth showcase plans are also assured of valueadded services such as exclusive networking sessions with VIP visiting delegations led by international industry associations, curated media tours for product spotlight publicity and other integrated marketing outreach privileges to enhance their preshow introductions to over 25,0000 potential trade buyers from over 80 countries welcomed to visit the show. Key exhibitors are also invited to present at the various seminars, including an international forum featuring more than 10 notable industry experts as speakers to deliver their insights regarding the developments of the global hardware industry.

Exhibitors will showcase a diverse range of products covering THS’s ten exhibit categories: power tools, tools & accessories, fasteners & fittings, building supplies, machine & plant equipment, garden & plant equipment, garden & outdoor equipment, automotive supplies & accessories, locks & fittings, plumbing hardware and safety equipment and products.

THE ROBOTS ARE COMING ALREADY HERE

Handling sales efficiently could hardly be a more crucial part of any business, but it’s an area where technology is changing the game. Following up its Torque-Expo 2024 seminar, Spectrum discusses the next revolution in sales order processing. Head of Technical Consulting Richard Fishburn explains all…

Suppliers have multiple ways of processing incoming customer orders, which involves determining what the client wants and entering the data into the ordering system. Each method described below has its pros and cons and can often be automated to an extent. However, the biggest challenge remains processing unstructured natural language orders.

The first and most obvious way of processing orders is manually over the phone. The benefit of having people take orders and manually entering them into the ERP system is human oversight. The sales agent can assist the customer, providing opportunities to upsell and crosssell. The significant drawback of this method is the cost of staffing.

The next method is via email attachment. Often, customers will enter their order requirements into their own ERP system, which generates a structured PDF and emails it to their supplier. This is convenient for the customer as it automates sending the order directly from their ERP system. The attachment is then keyed into the supplier's own ERP system. Although this requires high data entry costs, intelligent document processing can significantly reduce this burden and automate the process to a significant extent. This approach relies on a structured order document as the email attachment.

Another commonly used method to automate the exchange of order data is electronic data interchange (EDI). This involves the customer sending their order to the supplier in a known format such as Excel, XML, CSV, or JSON. The supplier can then translate the file into their own format and import it into their ERP system. This requires cooperation between the customer and supplier and can involve high setup and running costs but provides a high level of automation. This is usually reserved for highvolume transactions.

Suppliers may choose to provide an online storefront where customers can pick from a product catalogue and enter orders. This allows the supplier to target their

customers with additional information such as marketing and special prices directly at the point of order and has obvious benefits. However, customers are less likely to accept this method of ordering as they are likely to have already keyed the order into their own ERP system and don’t want to duplicate data entry.

All these methods have their strengths and weaknesses and can have automation strategies applied to reduce the costs of document handling and data entry. They are all likely to play a role in the supplier's overall order entry strategy.

THE NEXT REVOLUTION IN SALES ORDER PROCESSING

Historically, the biggest gap in this automation strategy has been entering natural language orders from the body of emails. Orders placed in natural language are generally completely unstructured, and automation systems weren't able to take this unstructured content and create a structured output that could be accepted as an order. This is changing due to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLM). We are now able to pass the natural language from the email to the LLM and receive structured and even matched data back.

TAKE

THIS EXAMPLE:

“Please can I order the following:

• AP300 Water Resistant Boot size 10 in black.

• A pair of size 8 safety trainers, cheapest you have, black preferably.

• Murray black waterproof boots size 10.

• A set of the knee pads you have on offer at £15.99.”

Using the power of AI and LLMs, we can output matched structured data, allowing us to create partly or fully structured orders that can be manually reviewed or even entered touchless.

Furthermore, we can extend this strategy to enquiry management, where the body of every incoming email is read and the communication classified. This results in ordered and manageable work queues that can be assigned to teams based on their classification. Classifications such as ‘Order’, ‘Sample Request’, ‘Delivery Chase’, or ‘Complaint’ can be assigned the correct priority and directed to the appropriate work queues. Leveraging technologies such as EDI, intelligent document processing, and large language models can significantly impact the efficiency of sales agents, heavily reducing manual data entry and document handling, and freeing up time which can be better spent on valueadded customer service tasks.

// Leveraging technologies can free up time which can be better spent on value-added customer service tasks.

It’s behind you: Richard Fishburn explains how AI can back your sales processing for efficiency gains

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

LAUNCH REPORT

DESIGN BY KNIPEX –THE FUTURE?

Earlier this year, KNIPEX held a press launch for its new ranges at the Design Museum in Kensington. Peter Brett was there for Torque Magazine, giving KNIPEX’s new products the once-over…

The steady stream of welldesigned pliers, pipe cutters and wrenches, from Germanybased company KNIPEX, over the last few years has been, in my view, quite phenomenal. The tools all have the unmistakeable imprint of a crack design team that has not only kept the old hands happy, but also introduced lots of new, efficient and timesaving tools that appeal to newly qualified professional users too.

When the invitation to examine some of the latest tools from KNIPEX dropped into my inbox I was straight onto the case. Interestingly, the new Design Museum in Kensington, London, was chosen for the launch. The museum holds a marvellous, and growing collection of tools, gadgets and consumer stuff, so it was an appropriate choice. Plus, there are lots of reminders in the museum that design means only intrinsically good design.

To prove how important this launch was, KNIPEX ensured that both the UK and German teams were present – and we got the whole picture from all the angles – design, production, marketing and social media.

An introduction from Marc Andre, a Product Manager, guided us through the innovations and design intentions. Some flesh on the bone from other team members followed, and then the select few (we journos and chosen endusers) were given the opportunity to try out the range of new tools with the slight challenge that the NDA we signed meant that we weren’t able to go to print with our impressions until the summer.

And now the good news – the official embargo on the tools has passed and so we are free to examine some of the products in detail.

The StepCut XL – claims 60% easier cutting of multi-conductor cables

I like the StepCut cable cutter – made in three sizes, all with slim heads for easy cutting access, it uses the wellestablished principle of a cutting blade that is curved to enable easy starts to a cut without the friction and contact that a straight blade would give. As the blade goes through the cut, the curved blade cuts only small sections at a time – thus requiring less squeeze pressure from the user. The proof is in the pliers – the largest pair will cut solid copper and aluminium cables up to 35mm thick. The adjustable high leverage bolted joint keeps the blades and handles straight and tight for maximum guillotinestylecutting action.

The blade edges are stepped to prevent a cable from moving under the pressure of the cut. While the pinch guard ensures that users’ fingers don’t get trapped in the handles.

The New TubiX S Pipe Cutter

Compact size was the design goal for the TubiX S. Plumbers value the ability to cut a pipe close to a wall, but with accuracy and speed. With a working radius of only 39.5mm the tool’s QuickLock mechanism allows onehanded operation to clamp the pipe and locate the cutting disc onto the pipe. Presizing the TubiX to the pipe also allows the user to push the cutter over the pipe rather than using the blue screw tightening mechanism.

Hidden in the top of the blue screw tightener is a spare cutting wheel that can be fitted quickly with basic tools and nous.

New and sharp cutting wheels are readily available for

different metals like stainless steel and copper they are all a standard size and can be used on other tube cutters in the KNIPEX Range.

When I tried the TubiX S I was amazed at how quickly I got used to using the tool – it really makes the job of cutting into small spaces easier – and as a bonus the bright blue and red livery makes it easy to spot in a crowded toolbag, despite its small size.

KNIPEX Stripping Knife – an Original

This knife deserves a name like the KNIPEX Katerpillar because that is what it reminds me of as the blade creeps down, cutting the insulation in a controlled and precise line.

I certainly think that the KNIPEX design team earned their laurels when developing this one.

In my limited use of electrical cables I have always found the cutting back of the cable outer insulation to reveal the inner cables, a difficulty. I usually use a craft knife to carefully cut the outer insulation, but I don’t always manage to not damage the inner cables. Another chunk off the end and start again is the only solution.

This brand new compact Stripping Knife uses a ratchet action connected to a hooked blade to pull its way down the cut end of the cable to cut the outer insulation so that it can reveal the inner cables, ready to be connected. The action is slow, deliberate and controlled and the small protective shoe on the end of the cutting blade prevents it from cutting the insulation of the inner cables as it is pulled by the gear action. I must admit that it took a few tries to get the cutting action and angle of the blade just right, but when it works – it works well and is also pretty effortless. The tool is a quite short at around 150 mm long, so will fit easily into a trouser pocket. The sharp blade is folded back into the body, as are the thumb grips, so no sharp pieces are left to cut an unwary hand.

COMMUNITY

Würth supports UNICEF with €400,000

As part of a worldwide campaign week, the Würth Group supported the UN Children's Fund UNICEF by making a donation to an aid programme that provides children in Sri Lanka with access to highquality education and psychosocial support.

It was the sixth time Würth presented a donation cheque to the aid organisation. On the occasion of the RW WORKOUT Week, which is held worldwide and sees office and sales staff working together, €400,000 was raised by the company.

“Children should be able to fully develop their skills,” said Bettina Würth, Chairwoman of the Advisory Board of the Würth Group and member of the UNICEF Committee for Germany. “They need unrestricted access to education. With the donation for schools in Sri Lanka, we want to make a contribution to enabling children to attend school on a regular basis and to providing school materials and meals for them.

In addition to the economic and energy crisis, the country suffers from frequent natural disasters, which threaten the families' ability to afford basic needs, especially those of their children. In addition, the majority of schools remained closed in 2022. The lack of access to school education and the economic crisis also

threaten children’s mental health.

Thanks to the donation, children receive learning materials such as pencils, notebooks and worksheets.

Moreover, schools, especially in poor areas, are supported in providing regular meals. In close cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the programme also focuses on highquality education through training and qualification measures for teachers. The donation also benefits the children’s mental health and psychosocial support. The measures are designed to help children regain their courage and look ahead in times of crisis.
