Sport is an integral part of every young person’s education at St Aloysius’ College.

Our traditional sports are Hockey, Rugby and Athletics but we offer a diverse and exciting co-curricular programme, designed to provide pupils with the opportunity to engage, inspire and excel in sport.

The College participates in all major regional and national tournaments for Rugby, Hockey, Cross Country, Track and Field Athletics, Golf and Football.

Athletics

S1-S6

Athletics is a core part of the curriculum in the Summer term. We participate in all major competitions from the District League matches, Glasgow schools championships and Scottish schools events.

From April to June, S1-S3 will focus on a variety of track and field disciplines during their PE and games lessons.

Badminton

S1-S6

Our Badminton club takes place in the new sports facility next door to the College. It is on offer to S1-S6 students. Pupils learn the rules and etiquette of the game, and have fun playing this popular sport. Badminton is also a major part of our core and certificated curricular programme, and pupils who attend this club benefit greatly from it in PE.

Basketball

Basketball is a global sport that is fast-paced and combines the need for individual skill and excellent teamwork. The boys have the chance to learn the sport and develop basic skills. It is great for fitness and developing coordination and ball-handling skills.

P7-S2

This group will comprise the S1 Team and the Under-14 Team. The S1 Team will compete in a number of friendlies and the Scottish Cup, while the Under-14 Team will compete in the Glasgow Schools League and the Glasgow Cup.

S3-S6

This group makes up the Under-15 Team, the Under-16 Team and the First Team. The Under-15 Team will compete in the Scottish Cup, while the Under-16 Team will compete in the Glasgow Schools League and the Glasgow Cup. Finally, the First Team will compete in all competitions; Scottish Cup, Glasgow Schools League and Glasgow Cup normally competing 15-20 matches. The First Team has also had three recent trips to compete in tournaments in Gijon, Spain. 19

Cross country is a core part of the curriculum. We participate in district and National competitions from Glasgow schools to Scottish schools. We also host our annual cross-country week which takes place in October.

Strengthandconditioning

Strength and conditioning and fitness are an essential part of our rugby and hockey training. However, both are on offer, through our specialist coaches, to all pupils. The focus is on conditioning our students to make them faster, stronger, agile and more competitive. These sessions take place in our state-of-the-art sports facility.

FOOTBALL S4-S6

At the College, football is very popular and we compete at the highest level in National Competitions. In 2018, the team were crowned champions at the Scottish Independent Schools Football Association Scottish Cup Final. Football takes place from August to March.

Golf is a sport built of integrity, honesty and sportsmanship and requires high levels of concentration and perseverance. Pupils have the opportunity to attend after school golf lessons with a fully qualified PGA professional at a neighbouring golf facility. These sessions aim to help our pupils to develop their technical ability. We participate in a range of local and National competitions in Glasgow, Edinburgh and St Andrews. We also host our own school golf championships.

Hockey

The College hockey programme enables the girls to work through the basic skills of hockey. The skills are developed further into conditioned exercises, competitive situations, and finally into full games.

Pupils learn through training and games that the harder they work together as a team the better they will perform. By striving to perform their best, they are more likely to achieve their goals, which is a key component to being successful in life.

S1-S3 HOCKEY

At this stage, pupils learn core skills and general team play. From S1 upwards, pupils selected for teams will play 11- a-side matches during Saturday morning fixtures.

The S1, S2 and S3 'A' teams play in a competition at the end of the season against other schools from West District.

Pupils in S1-S3 also compete in two Interhouse Hockey Competitions each year, providing them with experience of competitive sports within their year group. These extremely competitive events are held in September and March.

From S3 onwards, pupils continue to develop their skills, tactical game awareness and concentrate on more specialised skills and areas of the game. 23

S4-S6 HOCKEY

From S4-S6 pupils form the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI teams also take part in 11-a-side matches on Saturdays, as well as several tournaments 11 and 7 a-side and Indoor.

S4, S5 and S6 pupils help coach and run the Interhouse Hockey Competitions for their younger peers, which gives them an insight into how to manage a team, make substitutions, and deal with the emotions of playing sport.

Previously we have enjoyed tours to Barcelona, South Africa, Holland and Lisbon where we have learned about new cultures, enjoyed visiting famous sights and experienced playing hockey in countries around the world.

Pupils performing to the highest standards for their age groups have gone on to represent West District and Scotland Hockey Squads. Along with the health benefits of sport, pupils gain many other experiences that help them develop, learn and grow. Teamwork promotes determination, persistence, and togetherness. Everyone in a team has a vital part to play.
