Cédric Martin, tireless virtuoso of the diatonic accordeon, is returning again to Stamford Arts Centre by popular demand for the 10th year. His annual visit to England has become an eagerly anticipated New Year fixture. Salmanazar, meaning a very large bottle of champagne, is the latest new French dance band of Cedric Martin to visit the UK on tour just after New Year. As well as London and Norwich they will be playing in Stamford. The band includes two internationally acclaimed players, Philippe Laussine on the electric hurdy-gurdy and Sébastien Benoît on giant French bagpipes and whistles. These are some of the best traditional musicians in France.
Burke and Hare and the Body Snatchers Discover the true story behind the infamous Burke and Hare, who while not actually body snatchers, are always associated with the name. The fear of the body snatchers was very real and extraordinary measures were taken to counter their trade: on one occasion resulting in a two hour gun battle. Why did the medical profession condone the practice? How was it brought to an end, or has it? What happened when the body snatchers came to Peterborough? Wednesday 9 January 7.30pm

achieved all she did in twelfth century Europe is perhaps more remarkable still and explains her legendary reputation. Her forcefulness, ability, beauty and charm enabled her as a patron of the arts, as a politician and a mother to exercise a pervasive influence for more than six decades. Wednesday 13 February 7.30pm Boudica of the Iceni Boudica’s revolt in AD61 nearly destroyed Roman rule in Britain. Who was she? The Armadas (there were three more Armadas sent by Spain against Elizabethan England, following that of 1588) have entered into legend. Did Drake play his game of bowls on Plymouth Hoe? Why did it suit both sides to attribute success or failure to Divine intervention? Where did the myth of the smaller English ships originate? Wednesday 24 April 7.30pm Tickets for each talk £5 (£4)

The Room at the Top of the House
Josh finds the outside world a fascinating and frightening place. At a time when he is most vulnerable, a room of forgotten things quickly becomes the perfect place for him to escape reality. His family make a desperate attempt to help him realise there is more to life than photos on a shelf and postcards under the door. This is an honest and uplifting show about fear and the impact our decisions have on those we care about, told through mesmerising movement, poetic text and visual inventiveness. ‘This is a slick and thoughtful piece, using the performers’ skill and the medium of physical theatre to highlight an issue that will affect as many as one in three people in their lifetimes.’ FRINGE GURU School/ College Workshop available please email jo@stamfordartscentre.com
Few other ensembles can match the range of Fretwork’s repertory, spanning as it does the first printed music of 1501 from Venice to contemporary music commissioned by the group.
Today is Andy Griffith’s twenty-first birthday. His mother Carol is making the final arrangements for his party. Just the immediate family – until two unexpected, and not necessarily welcome – extra guests turn up. Carol’s careful planning is turned upside down as secrets are revealed and old resentments surface. The domestic pot is about to boil over. A warm, witty and heartfelt look at a family falling apart – and pulling together – when life doesn’t turn out quite the way they hoped.

The Silence of Snow: The Life of Patrick Hamilton
April
Written and performed by Mark Farrelly
Mark Farrelly (Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope) presents his riveting, kinetic solo show portraying one of the great English writers of the inter-war years. Patrick Hamilton was a dazzling success in his twenties, producing hit plays Rope (filmed by Hitchcock) and Gaslight, and many classic novels.
‘They were absolutely fantastic, bringing the entire audience roaring to its feet.’ Telegraph The first major female star of the 80’s, award winning singer-songwriter Hazel O’Connor rose to fame in 1980 starring in the film Breaking Glass. There were hits and eye-catching Top of The Pops appearances aplenty along the way. Accompanied here by virtuoso saxophonist Clare Hirst (The Belle Stars, Communards, David Bowie) on sax and vocals and Sarah Fisher (Eurythmics) on keyboards and vocals, this powerful blend of voices and musicianship brings a classy touch of energy, passion and fire to Hazel’s vibrant performance. Unmissable. ‘It’s all there, that voice, soaring sax...timeless.’ Glastonbury Festival Wednesday 27 March 7.30pm Ballroom Tickets £20 (£19) 20 Box Office 01780 763203 I www.stamfordartscentre.com

‘What do you actually want to say in your art?’ Catherine encourages students to think for themselves. Her intention is to stimulate students’ insight and inventiveness; to guide them to combine imagination with observation and memory and so for each to pursue his/her personal voice. Promoting awareness of contemporary artists and past modern masters and the technical skills of mixing and applying paint, whatever medium, are very much part of the teaching. In preparation for painting it is suggested that students draw; in the landscape, garden or home. All abilities welcome, just bring an open mind. If you need to buy painting materials, contact Catherine for advice on what to purchase. headleyart@outlook.com Tuesday 8 January to 2 April 9.30am to 12.30pm (break 19 February) Tickets £150 (£132) for term Maximum number of students: 14
