Welcome to the 2019 series of music in Quiet places! Our annual journey through the highways and byways of South Kesteven brings music from near and far, both geographically and chronologically, to some of the outstanding churches in the area. We open with the prestigious Castalian String Quartet, recently returned from concerts in the USA and in Vienna. Three concerts are influenced by folk music and, in the case of the Tim Kliphuis Trio, by gypsy tunes and jazz as well. Alva mine 800 years of English tradition for a special programme strongly linked to the county. Prize-winning Meraki Duo venture further afield with musical snapshots from Eastern Europe and the US. Vocal group Blossom Street treats us to a relaxed summery programme of music from both sides of the Atlantic. Our final concert brings us into Stamford with Eboracum Baroque and a feast of Handel and more! A point of interest is that three of the churches, like several along the fenland borders, are dedicated to St Andrew. Why is that? Answers on a postcard please! As always, we are grateful to the incumbents, churchwardens and congregations of the host churches. Without their support these concerts could not take place. Refreshments will be available during concert intervals. These are provided by the host church and the income goes to church funds. Seating in all churches is unreserved. It can also be hard so you may wish to bring a cushion or a rug with you. Car parking may be a short distance from the church. Please allow adequate time for parking and be considerate to local residents. If you need information about facilities or access, please contact the Box Office at Stamford Arts Centre 01780 763203.

Quartet in D minor op.76 no.2 Quartet no.1 in E minor (Kreutzer Sonata) Quartet no.2 in C op.36
Already enjoying an international career, with concert tours in the US, China, Columbia and Europe as well as regular appearances at major UK festivals and London’s Wigmore Hall, the Castalian Quartet recently received two prestigious awards for further development. Janacek’s quartet was inspired by Tolstoy’s story of the same name and also references Beethoven’s violin sonata. Deeply influenced by the music of Purcell, Britten’s quartet is richly original and melodic. The church, with an unusual dedication, overlooks fenland beside the Roman Carr Dyke. This position and its solid Saxon tower suggest that it may have been built as a fortress as well as a sanctuary. A Norman doorway leads to the nave of predominantly the same period. The rood-loft stairs and doorway are still present, and chantry chapels at each side of the 13th-century chancel have hagioscopes looking towards the eastern altar.

‘I will sing you a song and a very pretty one’ Early English songs & folk ballads A garland of songs including tender lullabies, spine-chilling ballads, shanties, carols, lively dances and songs from a long tradition of social protest, from Lincolnshire and beyond. MIQP favourites Alva return with a programme devised especially for this concert, bringing their distinctive sound and warm communication to music drawn from 800 years of English history. St Andrew’s church stands amongst trees at the top of the broad high street. Evidence of its Norman origins are evident in a pillar on the north side of the aisle with the chancel from the 13th century and aisles and 14th century arcades. The finest feature is undoubtedly the screen with its richly carved pattern of roses and vines.

Tim Kliphuis violin nigel Clark guitar roy percy double bass Reflecting the Seasons Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis and his Trio are firm favourites on the British scene with a career spanning more than 12 years. Their genre-crossing music with elements of gypsy, folk and classical music has delighted audiences all over the globe. This concert includes numbers from ‘Reflecting the Seasons’, based on Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, as well as other popular classics and music by Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt. The lofty steeple of St Vincent is linked to the central tower with flying buttresses and was reduced in height in the 19th century rebuild following a lighting strike. Inside, the most immediate feature is the unusual double nave, divided by a 14th century arcade of slender pillars, each with a delightful floral stop. Faded wall paintings and monuments to the Hussey family add to the interest.

meera maharaj flute James Girling guitar Postcards from Around the World Music from the US, France, Spain and Romania by Chick Corea, Piazzolla, Messiaen, de Falla, Bartok Continuing the gypsy and folk inspirations of the two previous programmes, Meera Maharah and James Girling present a whistle-stop international tour with music written for flute and guitar as well as their own arrangements. Prize-winning graduates of the Royal Northern College of Music, Meera and James play in a wide variety of ensembles as well as performing as a duo at festivals and in concert series up and down the country. The tower and spire of St Andrew’s, curiously sited in place of a south transept, dates from 1738. The windows and the urns at each corner of the tower echo the style of neighbouring Grimsthorpe Castle. Although much restored, the interior still holds evidence of its Norman and Early English foundation in its pillars with stiff-leaf capitals.

Crossing the Atlantic Songs old and new from the old and new worlds The chamber choir Blossom Street bring a programme of songs old and new, popular and serious – a perfect blend for a summer’s evening. Blossom Street performs regularly at major concert halls and festivals, on radio and TV, and has released three critically-acclaimed CDs on the Naxos label. Music by Finzi, Britten and Sullivan is partnered by that of their counterparts across the Atlantic including Copland and Barber. Overlooking parkland at the edge of the village, St Andrew’s is a landmark in the scenery. Light from high clerestory floods the interior. Dating mainly from the 15th century, the church retained many original features after a heavy restoration. Notable monuments include an Elizabethan table tomb and an elaborate wall monument.
eboracum baroque Thursday 26 September 7.30pm St martin’s Church, Stamford pe9 2nT String Quartet, Harpsichord, Recorder, Trumpet, Soprano, Baritone A delightful programme of baroque music including Handel and some of his contemporaries in this special Stamford Georgian Festival concert. Eboracum Baroque are a group of young professional singers and instrumentalists that perform across the UK and Europe specialising in the performance of Baroque music in a historically informed style and on period instruments. The 16th century St Martin's Church is closely linked to Burghley with the North Chapel housing the tombs of the Cecil family. The majority of the medieval coloured glass was bought by the Earl of Exeter from the Church of the Holy Trinity at Tattershall in 1754. Dutch portrait painter William Wissing and Daniel Lambert are buried in the churchyard.
