European Arts Company presents
The Trials of Oscar Wilde
Following a sell-out west End run, European Arts Company presents this brilliant dramatisation of the libel and criminal trials of Oscar Wilde, written by his grandson Merlin Holland.
Thursday 14 February 1895 was the triumphant opening night of The Importance of Being Earnest and the zenith of Wilde’s career. Less than 100 days later, he found himself a common prisoner sentenced to two years hard labour. So what happened during the trials and what did Wilde say? Was he persecuted or the author of his own downfall? Using the actual words spoken in court, we can feel what it was like to be in the company of a flawed genius - as this less than ideal husband is suddenly reduced to a man of no importance. ‘A beguiling Wilde in a smart play that reveals the establishment at its worst’ The Guardian ‘Please don’t miss The Trials of Oscar Wilde - utterly compelling and heart-rending. Brilliant ensemble acting. GO!!!’ Stephen Fry Friday 17 May 7.30pm Theatre Tickets £12 (£10) £8 groups

Professor Lewis Dartnell
When we talk about human history, we focus on great leaders, mass migration and decisive wars. But how has the Earth itself determined our destiny? How has our planet made us? As a species we are shaped by our environment. Geological forces drove our evolution in East Africa; mountainous terrain led to the development of democracy in Greece; and today voting behaviour in the United States follows the bed of an ancient sea. The human story is the story of

these forces, from plate tectonics and climate change, to atmospheric circulation and ocean currents. In the talk, astrobiologist and broadcaster Lewis Dartnell will tell us the ultimate origin story. We’ll journey billions of years into our planet’s distant past, where history becomes science. There we’ll see the vast web of connections that underwrites the modern world – and explore how it can help us face the challenges of the future. Castle Construction, Conquest and Compensation
Stamford Shoestring Theatre presents the world première of
This talk commemorates the work of Christine Mahany who was the director of Stamford Archaeological Research Committee for many years. Dr Roffe collaborated with Miss Mahany on the important excavation of Stamford Castle from 1972 – 1976 as well as other archaeological projects in the area. His talk explores the role that her work played in a radical reassessment of the castle as an instrument of conquest in England.
Zoë wants a baby. Maggie wants her mum to follow her halfway round the world. Steve wants his motherin-law to sell her Lincolnshire home. Hugo wants to get to know his new family. And Muriel? She has ideas of her own, but nobody’s bothered to ask her what they are. This wry and fast-moving comedy exposes the ties that bind us together – and how easily they start to fray.

Terry Raybould and Roy Holley met in Tuscany one summer around twenty years ago. Roy joined a class at Il Centro d’Arte Verrocchio, where Terry was a tutor, and they quickly developed a friendship when they realised the complementary nature of their styles of painting. Whilst they never attended the same art schools, they were both taught by Frank Auerbach and his Euston Road School contemporaries. Both were, at separate times, presidents of the Welland Valley Arts Society and Roy, with his wife, the sculptor Mo Gardner, started Rutland Open Studios. Terry and Roy were friends and colleagues to the end. Terry died on 1 January 2018, and Roy on 15 December 2018: both were 77. They leave both an extraordinary legacy of art, companionship and memories for those whose lives they touched. 8 August – 25 August
