The Koichi Sato Tasmania, an international Grand Prix and other highest award winning collection, was auctioned by David Feldman in Geneva on June 27. That same day, Feldman auctioned the John du Pont British Guiana, the results of which were quite remarkable. Fellow columnist, Glen Stephens, will have much to say about that sale in his pages. The Tasmania results were comparatively subdued, and I suggest in time will be seen as a lost opportunity to step up to international collecting level, at a fraction of the cost of a relatively ordinary Australian Commonwealth exhibition standard collection. Mr Sato loved his Tasmania, and set his sights on constructing a great collection early in his collecting career. I recall his visit to my Melbourne office in 1996. He and family had just arrived from a tour of Tasmania, which had included a visit to Port Arthur...a day or two before Australia lost its Figure 2. Earliest known usage of 1d Courier

innocence to Martin Bryant. To collect Classics, and the modern interpretation of that parameter embraces stamp issues to 1860 only, one needs to be very well informed. A “shopping list” of must have items is a mandatory prequisite the “dare to be great’ collector must compile. Mr Sato formed his “list”, and I was very pleased to have assisted him in adding a number of those key items to his collection. Classic era Colonial material is a difficult subject for condition perfectionists. The Sato collection, and indeed my Grand Prix Victoria collection, would be somewhat sparse if perfect condition only was demanded. One must be rational, and if “perfect” material doesn’t exist, which is usually the case with the most impressive multiples, covers, etc, then appearance becomes the essential ingredient to target. A thin, crease, concealed tear, etc, in an important item will never deter the enthusiast intent upon forming a great collection. There has never been a “perfect” quality collection which has won highest attainable international awards. Firstly, I’ve featured nine lots from the Sato collection, primarily a selection of what I regard as good value lots, and round this out for the month with a handful of local auction items. My thanks to the respective auction houses for use of scans from online facilities. Tasmania realizations are in Euros, excluding buyer’s premium; the

described as showing a distinct “kiss-print”. The inscription appears just once in the sheet of 24, and is more often largely or wholly trimmed away. Estimated at €400, it realized a modest €340. Lower denomination used Kangaroo monogram singles generally fetch more, so this was particularly good value for the buyer. Just nine covers bearing 1d Courier multiple frankings of four are recorded; Sato had five of these. #50022 (Figure 2) is one of the more

attractive, and provides the earliest known usage of the stamp, just eight days after issue. The shade is an unusual greyblue, which struck me on the two occasions I had the privilege of handling this item. The cover was a relatively modern “find”, first being auctioned by Robson Lowe Ltd in 1983. It then realized £6500, and went to the Maxwell Hayes collection, the major portion of which I auctioned in 1989. Mr Sato bought it from me in the 1990s, when the successful bidder at Hayes onsold. Estimated €20000 and sold for €14000, this must be a contender for the best value for money lot in the sale. #50034 (Figure 3) comprised two items which exemplify the “appearance becomes the essential ingredient” comment above. Described in catalogue as “touched at left, both with faults incl. pin holes, thins or small tear”, these items are so rare it is unlikely any other collection contains anything comparable. Sold at estimate of €600, the buyer was fortunate indeed. The unit from left of sheet was ex Ferrary and Burrus collections. Despite the bumps and bruises, I particularly liked #50097 (Figure 4). This is an exhibitor’s exhibit – one can be assured the judge’s eyes will be drawn to it. Not mentioned in description, but it would appear the single at left was once positioned at right, beneath the strip (note the “R” from handstruck stepped “SHIP LETTE[R]”)? I agree with the “attractive and unique multiple franking” comments, but perhaps overestimated at €10000; I thought the realization of €6500 was “about right”. Stamp News - 9

Figure 10. Postal Stationery gaining in popularity I love record multiples, and was obsessed with acquiring the largest recorded unused and used multiples when I was constructing my Victoria. #50185 (Figure 5) is the equal largest extant multiple of the Chalon imperf. 2d (Sato had the other, a strip of eight). The very nature of multiples generally renders them more vulnerable to faults, and despite these, I find the block of eight a very agreeable item. The realization of €360 (estimate €300) was very good value; imperfect common used Kangaroo £1 Bicolours can sell for more. Another record multiple, this time of the Chalon imperf. 4d unused, #50194 (Figure 6) again had tolerable faults, although these would not deter a collector intent upon assembling a great collection. Acknowledging the faults, the catalogue description almost apologetically mentions “still Figure 9. Multiples not as appreciated as they deserve Stamp News - 11

Figure 12. Spectacular for both Commonwealth and PNG usage collections very rare”. Conservative indeed given its unique status! Sold for €1500 against an estimate of €2000. With four of the five stamps then current, on a delightful cover, #50201 (Figure 7) satisfies my interpretation of Philately as Art. Picture these stamps as used singles, removed from the cover? One could not give them a second glance, so we are fortunate indeed that this item remains intact for our permanent appreciation. Estimated at a conservative €1000, the realization of €5000 confirms the popularity of beautiful, multicoloured frankings of the classic era. A one-frame exhibit of Australian Colonial franking compositions for the 1/9d multiple rate to U.K. via Marseilles would be a stunning subject.

The rate make-up generally consisted of three or more different stamps (no Colony had a 9d denomination stamp during the period of that rate), so a colourful exhibit would be assured. Not a subject for the budget constrained, I hasten to add. #50206 (Figure 8) was estimated the same as for Figure 7, and although not as popular, realized a healthy €1900. I’ve often commented in this column that the “singles only” mindset of most collectors puzzles me. Why settle for a single, often indistinguishable from those in every other collection, when you could have a block? #50228 (Figure 9) is an attractive and rare block which, although realizing €340 against €200 estimate, was inexpensive. Not forgetting the Australian auctions, a few Stamp News - 13

Figure 13. First usage item of the Nauru 5/-, amongst thousands of mint seen recent items caught my attention: Phoenix Auctions July 5 sale contained the first serious offering of Commonwealth Stationery since the appearance last year of the ACSC superb volume dedicated to the subject. Prices realized generally corroborated ACSC pricing. W.A.”, of which only two examples are recorded, the other unused. Fortuitously, rarity and fine condition converged, producing a very satisfactory $7250 (excluding premium) against $4000 estimate. Still not a great deal in comparison with most traditional material of such great rarity, one could argue. It is said only 40 of this item were printed. I like instructional/informative markings on covers, particularly the unusual types, such as

those in Figures 11A and 11B (Phoenix Lots #723 and 724). These handstruck framed “RECEIVED TORN/AT G.P.O.” types (they differ) are rare, having been applied to mail arriving at G.P.O. in damaged condition, effectively to advise recipient that Post Office “not guilty”. Figure 11A quaintly has been repaired by a Clerk utilizing selvedge from the then current 8d brown on pink stamp issue, superimposed over which is the informative marking. That it went unsold at a very conservative estimate of $150 suggests this field of Postal History is in need of a new devotee or two. Figure 11B was also unloved, even more attractively estimated (at $145!), ex Pack, Forster, Perry Collections. Uber common used Australian stamps (e.g. 5/- Bridge CTO) sell for much more. At the risk of repeating myself: I don’t get it? Status International had a selection of terrific PNG Postal Charge usage articles in the May 15 sale, Figure 12 being perhaps the most spectacular.

It is special in being both the first solo franking of the Navigator £1 and use of the PNG Postal Charges 3/- (a pair) I’ve noted. The right hand portion of the parcel wrapping is shown, the left hand portion has a P.O. note that the PNG 7/6d franking represents air surcharge. Estimated $1000/2000, it fetched $1800 (excluding premium). Buyer was friend and long time client, David Edwards of Melbourne, who is enthusiastically assembling outstanding usage collections of Australasia and British Empire. I’m looking forward to that invitation for an inspection! Coming up in the August 15 Prestige Auctions sale of the Darnell Nauru is Figure 13, a remarkable use of the 5/- Map pair on parcel wrapping portion. In bringing this to my attention, Gary Watson notes it is the first commercial use of this stamp he’s seen; also the case for me. How many mint Nauru 10/- Seahorses have I seen? Don’t ask.

Cinderella Corner

To start with this month a selection of unusual creations that I though might have been the work of Gerald King

South Australia. (Fig. 1).

An Adelaide collector showed me a set of these stamps that have some similarity to the well known Long Stamps issued by South Australia from 1886 until the appearance of the first stamps of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1913. The first group of these appeared as Postage and Revenue stamps that could be used for either postage or payment of stamp duty from 1886 with values from Two shillings and sixpence to Twenty pounds. After Federation in 1901 postage became the responsibility of the new Commonwealth Government and stamp duty and other forms of revenue remained with the

respective states and the inscription at the top of the stamps had to be altered to Postage. The values issued then were from Three pence to One pound. The stamps are ungummed and printed on unwatermarked paper, and although attractive, would not fool the experienced collector. I did think that they could be one of the many creations of Gerald King.

This one could be a little more dangerous for the

novice as it certainly has the look of the genuine stamp about it. The main failing will be that it is unwatermarked. There was a mark on the back that indicated an attempt to identify it as a replica.

New South Wales. (Fig. 4).

Again, not much like anything issued by New South Wales, but I will record it here for future reference.

Postage Due. (Fig. 5).

The only stamp of the lot marked as a replica and as with the Tasmanian one could be a trap for the beginner although it is unwatermarked.

New Zealand. (Fig. 6).

One of two “odd ones among the Australian

Colonial items in this lot is this New Zealand One penny stamp. Again not likely to fool anyone as the colour is way off the original shade and not watermarked as the original would have been.

Mauritius. (Fig. 7).

Not the Post Office Mauritius, only the Post Paid issue and not likely to deceive anyone.

Adelaide Stampex 2014.

The entries for this exhibition have closed and I am very disappointed with the response from Cinderella collectors. NOT ONE ENTRY!. I have been using this column to promote the class in the exhibition as Cinderellas tend to be just that, overlooked and this exhibition was a great opportunity to put on a good

though they could be worthy of a mention in this column. There were five of them printed on ungummed paper in different colours. They are rather poor copies of the originals and don’t really pose a problem to anyone as the originals have the value expressed as 10 Cents.

Tanks And Ships. (Fig. 8 and 9).

These poster stamps come from a sheet of 64 stamps, one half of the sheet devoted to the Tanks of the Allies and the other half to Britain’s Royal Navy ships. There are eight tanks and eight ships illustrated in blocks of eight repeated four times in each half of the sheet tanks on one pane of 32 and ships on the other pane.

Confederate States Of America. (Fig. 10).

I found some of these in a club circuit book and

U.S. Poster Stamps.

A collector friend lent me two books of Poster Stamps and these next three stamps are from the set Combat Insignia Stamps of the United States Army and Navy Air Corps. Fig. 11 is the insignia of Scouting Squadron 72 and was number 2 in the series of 50 issued on February 10 1942. February 20 1942. Fig. 13 is the insignia of Scouting Squadron 41 and was number 19 in the set issued on February 20 1942. The stamps come with an album that has provision for all 50 stamps along with a background story for each of the stamp designs and the preamble at the front of the album indicates that the issue is limited to 350,000 sets. The space for each stamp has the number of the stamp to be attached and the date of issue of the particular stamp with issues being made every 10 days from February 10 to March 22 1942. The stamps are gummed and perforated 12Âź.

Advertising Label. (Fig. 14).

Not sure where this label comes from and it does

not have much to give it away. At first glance I thought there was an eagle as part of the image, but on closer inspection it is an angel. I am going to guess that it is of American origin and probably dating from the 1960s.

City Carrying Company. (Fig. 15).

This stamp has been around for a good number of years, and occasionally turns up in mixed lots of Cinderellas. When it was first noticed it was thought to be a 3 cent denomination stamp, but research by Maxwell Hayes back in the 1980s established it as the logo of the City Carrying Company, based in Adelaide. The illustrated stamp is only part of the whole item which includes an address label with this portion being detatched as a receipt. I have the stamp printed in blue on white, red, green and blue.

AN AUSTRALIAN PRINCIPALITY In early 1970, feelings were running very high in Australia’s farming community. The government had introduced drastic reductions in the wheat quota. Leonard Casley owned a very large farm some 370 miles north of Perth in Western Australia. When he was informed about the quota awarded to his farm he immediately went through the roof. He felt that he could no longer operate his farm profitably unless changes were made. Mr. Casley decided to secede from the State of Western Australia and a new state saw the light of day on 21 April 1970. The farm is really very

large containing 18.500 acres of land. He likes to compare it with Hong Kong (without the New Territories). The area is described as undulating farm land with a wealth of Australian shrubs and glorious wild flowers. Mr. Casley crowned himself Prince and Ruler of the new state which he named Principality of Hutt River Province. Other members of his family were given titles of nobility and ministerial posts in the principality’s government. The Prince’s declaration of independence aroused a lot of interest in the Australian media and

Christer Brunström many curious people wanted to find out more about this rather unusual occurrence. In fact, coach tours to Hutt River Province were organised. The local infrastructure was developed to accommodate the influx of visitors. A café was established in addition to a motel. A chapel was also built. An independent state obviously needs a functional postal service and a post office was built in time for the issue of the principality’s very first postage stamps released on 15 November 1973. The five se-tenant stamps depict flowers which are

commonly found in the area. In 2013, the principality celebrated 40 years of postage stamps by releasing basically the same flowers but in slightly different designs and with new and higher face values. Today the word “Province” is no longer included in the name of the principality. When the first stamps were released in 1973, the principality applied for membership of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). Now more than 40 years later the UPU still hasn’t accepted the Principality of Hutt River as a member.

AN AUSTRALIAN PRINCIPALITY The mail from Hutt River is carried to the Australian Post facility at Northampton where it enters the regular mailstream. The covers receive a Postage Paid cancel. The Hutt River stamps are affixed to the back of covers. Prince Leonard doesn’t seem to be the typical Australian farmer. His main interests appear to include art in all its forms and he also seems to take a great interest in the preservation of the environment. Parts of the principality has been given new names such as Lake Beginning, Mount Secession and Wild Boar Gorge. In 1974, the principality celebrated four years

22 - Stamp News

of independence by featuring Prince Leonard on a postage stamp. At first Prince Leonard had endless problems with the local authorities. In his book Local Stamps of Australia (Dubbo 1982), Bill Hornadge describes the prince as a typical “Bush Lawyer”. In his many court appearances he almost always left victorious. Australia Post was also making problems for the prince and his state. However, they soon discovered that the principality produced an impressive volume of mail. The principality used exactly the same rates as Australia Post. Thus the mail from Hutt River to Northampton was carried basically

Christer Brunström free of charge which the late Bill Hornadge pointed out to the prince. Bill also suggested that the Hutt River stamps ought to be classified as local postage stamps but this certainly didn’t meet with princely approval. The Casley family appears to be deeply religious. Soon after independence the Chapel of Nain was built. Over the past 40+ years there have been numerous stamp issues with Christian designs. Frequently new stamps have been issued in time for the Christmas mail. In 1976, a set of eight values marked the sixth anniversary of independence. The stamps depict Australian birds and they were based on paintings by Princess Sherryl. At the time she was 17 years old. There have been occasions when the Hutt River Post Office has felt the need to mark important international events with special postage stamps. The International Year of Disabled Persons was celebrated in 1981 and Hutt River issued an attractive set of four stamps. One of the stamps depicts a man using his mouth to paint a picture. In 2011, the heads of government of the British Commonwealth had a three-day meeting in Perth to discuss important matters. I very much doubt that Prince Leonard had been invited but this did not prevent him from issuing a miniature sheet of four stamps marking the meeting. The sheet features a map of Western Australia and the Principality of Hutt River. Also included on each stamp are profile portraits of the Prince and Princess of Hutt River. Princess Shirley passed away on 7 July 2013 and a memorial postage stamp was issued later that year. She was born in 1928 and during her long life she saw her fairy-tale elevation from a farmer’s wife in the Australian outback to a princess of an independent principality. I suppose she was a strong supporter of her husband’s struggle against bureaucrats and politicians in Western Australia. Many Hutt River issues have been produced in se-tenant strips of five or more stamps. I suppose this was done in an effort to reduce the cost of printing. Strips of five stamps might look good but they are rather inconvenient as they don’t fit

on a normal album page. Also at the Hutt River post office it must be rather complicated to have as many as five different denominations in the same sheet. Bill Hornadge tells us that thousands of visitors came to the principality each year and many of them obviously wanted to send postcards to friends and relatives back home. Thus the main need was for stamps having the current Australian first class letter rate. The Principality of Hutt River has now existed for some 44 years and there are no indications that the Casley family intends to rejoin the State of Western Australia. I guess that the main 1970 problem involving the wheat quota must have been solved by now. At regular intervals new stamp issues remind us of the never-ending battle between the Casleys and the government of Western Australia. Using a Biblical metaphor, it could be compared with the struggle between David and Goliath with Prince Leonard and Hutt River being David. Some battles have apparently been won but Australia (and the rest of the world) still doesn’t recognize the independence of the Principality of Hutt River. There are quite a few similar “states” in other parts of the world. They have been established for a variety of reasons including tourist publicity. However, the Principality of Hutt River shows a longevity and perseverance which is quite unusual. So far Hutt River has issued more than 220 different postage stamps which makes for quite a sizable collection. A complete listing can be found at the Principality’s home page on the Internet (www.hutt-river-province.com). Many of the stamps are still available but some of the early ones have sold out. I tend to agree with Bill Hornadge when he describes the Hutt River issues as private local postage stamps. It is also rather amusing to consider the consequences of reducing the wheat quotas for the farmers in Western Australia. Fortunately only one of them seceded from the state and established his own principality with its own postage stamps. However, the action certainly created a lot of attention. Stamp News - 23

Stamps in the News - Globally! No smoke without fire

Reported at www.mailing-stuff.com An e-cigarette charger that had been shipped to the Healdsburg Post Office in California caught fire in its box last month, prompting an evacuation of the post office. Emergency dispatchers received a call around 10:37 am about a fire at the post office. The Healdsburg Police Department responded, as well as several fire departments. They found smoke coming from a cabinet holding international mail packages, said Healdsburg Fire Marshal Linda Collister. Firefighters set up a decontamination station in case the package contained hazardous materials, she said. They found three packages burned, one more seriously than the others. That one contained the e-cigarette charger, from Singapore.

“It was an interesting call,” Collister said. “The Postal Service will be investigating the incident.” Viewing the assembled fire engines, a bystander commented “50 years ago, an employee would have kicked the box outside and used a soda fire extinguisher on it.” Interestingly, the Healdsburg Post Office was previously gutted by a fire in 2010. No cause was found for that fire.

The design is based on Augarten’s Viennese Rose pattern which was introduced in 1924. Augarten is the second oldest porcelain manufacturer in Europe, having been established in 1718. The stamp has the value of €5.70 and 150,000 have been produced.

Philatelic book with an extra dimension Reported at www.digitaljournal.com

Holograms on postage stamps have become a new topical subject in philately, and there has been a growing interest among philatelists in collecting such items for many years now. Holographic stamps have been issued in approximately 80 countries, and the total number of different postal items containing holograms is estimated at 450 pieces. In his book, “Holography and Philately,” author Hans I. Bjelkhagen provides information on stamps issued worldwide since 1988.

“Holography and Philately” places emphasis on different types of hologram postage stamps and images, their producers and the story behind the stamps. Bjelkhagen provides the details for each issue, such as size, identification numbers, denomination, perforation and edition at the end of the book. In addition, official and special first day covers (FDCs) with cachet holograms are presented and described. Many of these holographic issues are spacerelated, including planets, satellites, space crafts, space stations, gamma radiation and cosmonaut images. Some hologram images are two-channel or animated types of images. A few of the stamp images of the animated type are quite unique, but philatelists are often unaware of this quality. “Holography and Philately” is perfect for philatelists who are interested in topical postage stamps, companies producing security holograms and hologram collectors. No other philatelic or holographic publication provides such extensive information on hologram stamps, accompanied by an abundance of high-

Canada Post has launched a stamp in June which depicts the legendary tale of a three-masted schooner ablaze in the Northumberland Strait more than 200 years ago. It was a story she had heard tales of many times in the past, a story that has become legendary since the late 1700s in Prince Edward Island. “It just looked like something burning on the water,’’ MacKinnon told The Guardian. “I’ve heard lots of stories about it from the old fellows. There have been people who have said they could see people on the ship. You could see the mast and burning and the people on it.’’ Canada Post thinks so much of this particular ghost story that it has launched a postage stamp depicting that very ship this month. Canada Post has created five haunted Canada themed stamps - Fiery Ships of the Northumberland Strait, Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac’s Ghostly Governor Louis de Buade, Niagara-on-the-Lake’s haunted Fort George, the St. Louis Light Phantom Train and the Ghost Bride of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.

New Zealand Post supports our Dick Reported at http://www.nzpost.co.nz

New Zealand Post will work alongside Dick Smith to support the electronics retail chain’s growth in Australasia, the companies announced recently. The New Zealand Post Group will take over distribution of Dick Smith’s products to its 61 stores nationwide and support its e-commerce initiatives selling products online direct to customers. New Zealand Post will run Dick Smith’s warehouse operation in South Auckland and the 21 people working at the site will become employees. “The agreement is significant for New Zealand Post, and we are very pleased to be able to secure the jobs of 21 Dick Smith staff at the site,” said a spokesman. “The staff are experienced in servicing an electronic logistics supply chain and will add to the mix of expertise New Zealand Post brings to supply chain management.” The agreement, in which New Zealand Post manages the distribution and delivery of Dick Smith products in New Zealand for Australia Post’s Star Track, was an important step in a key focus area for 26 - Stamp News

It also sets the groundwork for similar agreements with other retail companies across Australasia.

marketing Nutella in 1964, but it had its beginnings two decades earlier. Nutella® spread, in its earliest form, was created in the 1940s by Mr. Pietro Ferrero, a pastry maker and founder of the Ferrero company. At the time, there was very little chocolate because cocoa was in short supply due to World War II rationing. Mr. Ferrero used hazelnuts, which are plentiful in the Piedmont region of Italy to extend the chocolate supply. According to a press release from Ferrero announcing the 50th anniversary, today Nutella is available in more than 100 countries with a total sales volume of 365 thousand tons. Nutella also has 25 million followers on Facebook. Italy’s government printing office printed the selfadhesive Nutella stamp by rotogravure in sheets of 11. The printing quantity was 2.7 million stamps.

The postal trees of Botswana Reported at www.dailynews.gov.bw

BotswanaPost have taken moves to preserve an historic postal relic - the Mothata/ Mopenweeng tree which was used as a ‘post office’ to the Kweneng Tribal Administration. The Mopenweeng tree according to Chief Kgosi played an important role during the Second World War and the migrant labour period. It provided a means of communication connecting the soldiers and miners with their families. The current postman dispatches mail to all villagers and he read letters on behalf of those who could not read and write. The tree has been declared a monument and is protected under the Monuments Relics Act as part of Botswana heritage. The Director of the National Museum applauded

the postal sector for its contribution to the country’s development and preservation of the postal heritage. He encouraged the community to find ways to promote the tree and other heritage sites in Molepolole to share the history of the area. Developments at the site include paving, rest area and information panels on the history of the tree. On behalf of the community Kgosi pledged to take care of the monument and thanked the post office for involvement in community development. The tree was referred to as Box 1 and continued to be used by locals who could not afford renting postal boxes at Mathubantwa Post Office to receive their mail. Another postal tree in the region made the news last year – the tall motswere near the Lotsane River Bridge in Palapye. Although the age of the tree is not known, oral traditions suggest that the tree was already big when the railway line was under construction in the 1950s, thus the tree is estimated to be around 200 years old. According to Kgosi Ntebele this is the tree that was used as a post office during the colonial era. Being along the railway, railway mail was delivered at the tree from as far as South Africa and Southern Rhodesia, present day Zimbabwe. After Bangwato capital moved from Old Palapye, post men came riding oxen from Serowe to deliver and collect mail sent by their relatives working in the South African mines. Stamp News - 27

Stamps in the News - Globally! This is why Kgosi Ntebele objected when the company that was engaged to construct the Lotsane River Bridge, suggested that the tree be felled to pave way for construction. This tree is also associated with several mythic stories deriving from a mishap with one construction company, which built the new bridge on the Lotsane River over the tarred road. The contractors accidentally cut a branch off the tree during the construction of the bridge resulting in total malfunction of all construction machinery.

The machinery stayed that way for three days until they asked the local chief to intervene. Kgosi Ntebele says he informed them to carry on with their job and to their surprise all the machines became functional. Ntebele would like to see the Palapye community giving the tree the respect it was accorded in the olden days.

Mona Lisa to Mao

Reported at http://www.scmp.com There is a wry sense of irony in Siu Leung-hing’s artworks - mosaics created using hundreds of stamps. Look closely at the striking portrait of Mao Zedong and you can see he is made out of stamps bearing the head of Queen Elizabeth. A brightly coloured Mona Lisa is fashioned out of stamps paying homage to the rather sombre-hued original in the Louvre. Siu, a 58-year-old police clerk living in Hong Kong, has also created a cartoon image of a policeman out of some 1,000 used postage stamps depicting Chinese chess and the Hong Kong landmarks - representing the strategic task of policing the city. Siu, who has been collecting stamps since he was a boy, began creating his mosaics after the handover of Hong Kong in 1997 as a way of using up stamps bearing the British queen’s head which were no 28 - Stamp News

longer valid and were not part of collectible sets. He said: “The subject of the image is really up to and limited by the colour schemes available in my stamp collection. Portraits are the hardest to construct.” Siu is not interested in making money from his art. He does not plan on staging any exhibitions, nor does he warm to the idea of taking private commissions. “Exhibitions are costly and private commissions take too much time,” he said. The tools of Siu’s trade are basic: tooth picks, glue and scissors. “Patience and discipline are the most important requirements when it comes to this activity,” he added.

Philippines postscript…..

Reported at http://newsinfo.inquirer.net Australasian Stamp News readers may recall a report last month on a controversial PHLPost issue of postage stamps marking the 100th founding anniversary of Iglesia ni Cristo. In an update to this story, a taxpayer has taken legal action against the Philippine Postal Corp this issue, saying that public funds should not be used to benefit a religious group. Renato Peralta of Las Piñas City filed for injunction last week to stop PHLPost, a governmentowned corporation, from paying for the printing of the INC centennial postage stamps and to stop their distribution. “Coming up with the commemorative stamp of the INC is tantamount to sponsorship of a religious activity” which is prohibited by the Constitution, Peralta said. Peralta is a court employee and a member of a Christian group. He said the issue was the

use of public funds when “there is no legitimate government activity.” There will be a hearing on July 4 at Branch 33 of the Manila Regional Trial Court, he said. The INC will mark its 100th year of registration in the Philippines on July 27. The postage stamp shows the INC Central Temple and a portrait of the late Felix Manalo, founder and first executive minister. PHLPost is set to issue 1.2 million pieces of the INC stamp, more than twice what it usually prints for a single design, and bigger-sized than regular postage stamps. Postmaster General Josefina dela Cruz is reported to have said that the issuance of the commemorative postage stamp passed through certification by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. “The disbursement of public funds by Philpost for the INC occasion is illegal,” Peralta told the court. “The postmaster general and all officers involved in the INC commemorative stamps must be restrained from proceeding with the issuance and distribution of the stamps all over the country on or before July 27, or thereafter.” INC wields substantial political influence through its practice of bloc-voting during elections. Sought for comment, Dela Cruz said in a text message, “We stand by our position that the INC commemorative stamps are not unconstitutional.” “There has already been a Supreme Court ruling before pertaining to the issuance of stamps related to Manila’s hosting of the Eucharistic Assembly. The SC said it wasn’t a violation of the (separation) of church and state,” she said. “And INC is not the only church-related stamps that we have produced. We have issued special stamps for Pope Francis, Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII, all heads of the Catholic Church, and

Looking at New Zealand

Commemorating ANZAC Part 3: New Zealand 1936

In November 1934, the Australian returned servicemen’s league (RSILLA) informed the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association (RSA) that it had received approval for Australian stamps to be issued in April 1935 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landing at Gallipoli. The RSA approached the NZ Post Office for a similar issue but was told that there was not enough time left before April to produce a design worthy of the event. In later discussions it was agreed to issue stamps for the 21st anniversary in 1936. A surcharge equal to the postage value (½d and 1d) would be applied to the stamps to support the RSA’s work alleviating the problems of returned servicemen. This type of charity surcharge had been applied to the annual Children’s Health Stamps since 1929. It was used again for the Red Cross issue of 1959 but has not otherwise been used on NZ stamps. A leaflet distributed by the RSA promoting use of the stamps 34 - Stamp News

as a fund-raiser is shown nearby. Stamp designs were sought from the RSA’s branches but when none of these was deemed suitable a design by L C Mitchell was chosen. Mitchell’s design showed ANZAC Cove in the background with a soldier wearing the 1915 uniform in the foreground. Mitchell drew the soldier based on a photograph taken by a Post Office employee, S. Hall. A copy of Hall’s photograph and another photo of Mitchell’s drawing are shown nearby. These photos were presumably sold to collectors in 1936. I purchased them quite cheaply at auction in the 1980s but until recently I had not seen or heard of another set. The soldier in the photograph used as the basis for the stamp design was apparently not publicly identified until 1988 when Dave Ellis reported in the Christchurch Philatelic Society’s newsletter Captain Coqk that he had obtained a set of the stamps (pictured nearby) “stated … on the album page … to be autographed by the model, S. Catchpole, R.N.Z.A.” [Royal New Zealand Artillery]. Mr Ellis then quoted the description from the Postage Stamps of New Zealand, vol. 1, that the stamp design was based on a photo taken at Trentham Army Base (in the Hutt Valley, near Wellington). In a later edition of the newsletter, S. R. McKeon wrote: “I was told a few years ago that the model was Sel Catchpole, a regular army officer who retired about 1960 in Wellington with the rank of Major. He was a pre-war regular soldier and was photographed at Fort Dorset, Wellington, on the hill above the camp overlooking Breaker Bay”. Fort Dorset was located on the west side of the entrance to Wellington Harbour in the suburb of

Graeme Morriss Seatoun. It had a coastal artillery battery there from 1912. Breaker Bay faces south towards Cook Strait. The Fort was closed in 1991. Today, Wellington Airport is located between Seatoun and Wellington city. As an Artillery base, Fort Dorset seems a more likely site for the photo of an artillery man than Trentham. Mr McKeon offered to provide the name of his informant upon request, “a retired RNZA officer who is a keen stamp collector”. It seems probable that it was this “keen stamp collector” and artillery officer who asked Sel Catchpole to autograph the stamps. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find anyone who followed-up the offer to identify him. Lieutenant-Colonel McKeon passed away in Napier in October 2012. I would very much like to know the original collector’s identity to establish the provenance of the autographs.

Selwyn Catchpole (7/2/1914 – 3/10/1992) enlisted in the army in February 1935. After training, he was sent to Fort Dorset as a gunner (private). It would have been at this time that he posed for the photo wearing the 1915 uniform. In 1938, Catchpole was promoted to Lance Bombardier and transferred to the Permanent Staff in Wellington. During 1939 he received promotions to Corporal and Sergeant and, after a course at the Army School, to Warrant Officer II. With this rank he transferred from the regular forces to the 2nd NZ Expeditionary Force in February 1940. He served in Britain, Egypt, Italy, Greece and Crete receiving wartime (temporary) promotions to 2nd Lieutenant and Lieutenant. He returned to New Zealand in December 1941. He served in Egypt again from April 1945 before serving with the occupation forces in Japan until September 1946

Looking at New Zealand heard. The stamp designs were sent to the Australian Note and Stamp Printer in Melbourne in December 1935. According to the printer’s records, the die was made by T C (Trevor) Duffell. The die proofs were approved in February 1936. The stamps were printed on Wiggins Teape rag paper watermarked ‘NZ and star’. The printing plates had 192 impressions in four panes of 48 (6 rows of 8). The large sheets had the number 1 in each corner so the counter sheets, after guillotining, had the plate number in any one of the corners. The line perforation gauged 11. According to the printer’s records, enough paper was drawn to print 2,400,000 of the ½d and 3,168,000 of the 1d (including wastage). The Postage Stamps of New Zealand quotes NZ Post Office records of the receipt of 2,224,848 of the ½d and 3,030,448 of the 1d. The stamps were on issue from 27 April to 20 June1936. The surcharge raised £8,491/19/2d for the RSA.

From October 1946 he was a Lieutenant and Quartermaster and from September 1948 Captain. During the 1950s he was mainly involved with school cadet training. He was promoted to Major in 1955 and commanded the Base Camp at Fort Dorset from September 1955 to April 1957. He retired from the army in July 1961. A copy of his signature from the records is nearby for comparison with that on the stamps. There is also a photograph of Major Catchpole from 1957. AAT fully IMPERFORATE Miniature Sheets issued by Australia Post!

In November 2013, Australia Post released 250 x IMPERFORATE panes of 15 mini sheets of stamps. The “1913 Disaster & Isolation” issue, for the Centenary of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) of 1911-14. The AAE left Hobart in December 1911 commanded by Douglas Mawson and returned in February 1914. Mawson was knighted for his achievements, and is regarded as one of the greatest figures of all Antarctic exploration. You needed to phone the PO “800” number, or order online. Cost was well above face value, and the maximum order was ONE sheet a person. Sold out in super-fast time, as you’d expect - within hours I am advised. There will be near none in the secondary market, as collectors who got very lucky, will not be sellers - at any price. I’d guess there are easily 20,000 keen global collectors of AAT, but only 250 of these sheets to go around. If 200 buyers hold on to their sheets for their collections, that leaves just FIFTY to service those 20,000 collectors worldwide. 99% of AAT collectors do not right now realise this IMPERF issue even exists! In the 56 years since AAT first issued stamps in 1957, I can’t recall any other *AAT* imperforates sold by the PO. Each sheet is hand numbered in top left margin, and also comes with a Certificate of Guarantee card from head of AP, confirming that only 250 panes in TOTAL were sold – globally. This is an Official Australia Post Australian Antarctic Territory issue. I am offering these as follows: SUBJECT UNSOLD – please use correct stock code!

A. Fully imperforate MUH or CTO AAT Mini Sheet - $A60 a sheet. (Stock code 629KE) B. Single imperforate sheet, with MASSIVE wide top or base sheet margin. $A80 (Stock code 629KF) C. Revenue Review T.G. RYS

Starting off with figure one this month, is a 1d rouletted Tasmanian Government Railway. “Nothing special” I hear you say, except it is missing the Accountants circular handstamp, which is found on all these issues. It has a manuscript CANCELLED and what looks like initials of the canceller. Keep an eye out for any more of these, as they must be rare to have taken so long to surface.

GSB of WA

‘The one must have’ Western Australian revenue in your collection is the ‘Government Savings Bank Duty Revenue’. Figure 2 is a rather nice used example, which showed up in auction. I have seen a few proofs and mint but used copies are hard to find. If you do see one, dig deep to fill that gap.

Swan Halves

Staying with Western Australia, figure 3 is new to me, [ok I know that rhymes]. It is what appears to be a split transfer going vertically up and splitting the swan in half. Maybe you have similar in your collection and if so please share them here.

Rare Rail

Victorian Railway early parcel stamp issues appear to always sell at high prices and figure 4 is no exception. This 1879 3/- with security grill background was up on eBay, with a ‘buy it now’ for a few hundred dollars. Needless to say it never saw an hours exposure and was snapped up.

Typical Government printer, using up old stock but making it fun for collectors of this material.

Some time ago I showed figure 7 as a photograph, and have since been able to get hold of a much better scan of these rare 1899 New South Wales imperf Colour Proofs of the Clearance seals. The right vertical two were the issued colour red for Port of Sydney and Purple for the Port of Newcastle. The other 4 being colour trials. They were printed in Sydney by the New South Wales Government

Printer, by a single brass embossing die with woodcut background blue-green, and can be found used [fig8] which rarely turn up. Also found with SPECIMEN overprint on. Their job was as per the description on them, to seal packages coming into and going out of the said ports. Had these been inscribed say 2/6d then they would have been looked at closer by early students, but as they were blank of value, the interest was just not there. If you see one grab it at any cost!

It would be nice to see a few more come onto the market to allow new collectors to have a chance to buy and add to their collection. I would love to see any you may have.

Thank You

I would like to take this opportunity to thank one of my readers who sent me two small home made books that he had put together in the 1940’s as a child which were packed with New South Wales railway stamps. He asked that I not even give acknowledgment for them, and if of no interest to ‘throw in the bin’! As it happens, I was able to find

60 different station names within, some of which made it into my collection.

Perfin Corner

It’s always nice to add to my Revenue Perfin collection and when figure 14 was pulled from a bulk lot that I had bought, was very pleasing indeed. Listed as NZ/ IC.e in the free on line book of Revenue Perfins [found on Perfins.com.au]. This NZ.IC.e is the first from the Qld Edward series to turn up. Where there’s one there must be more, keep your eyes peeled.

“Desert Magic” Imported Stamp Drying books For those readers who have not seen these Desert Magic books, they are a large A4 sized book (stockbook sized) with thick white Spiro edge binding that as you can see allows them to lay flat. (There is a half sized one which is basically useless in our view.) The pages are of REALLY thick blotting type paper. i.e.thick heavy cardboard thickness. It is some special “fast release” formulation .. no idea what they use, but it really does WORK! There is then a special smooth plastic coating on one side. So you wash your stamps, and if you leave them to air dry on tea towels or blotting paper or newspaper, light creases and bends will always stay there. If they are placed into this book when touch damp (not sopping wet) and left there with the gum side to the plastic side and the front of stamp to the blotter side, they dry perfectly flat, and many light bends and creases vanish. Nearly all of them. It is amazing the difference they make, which is why we sell so many! Readers of www.stampboards.com have acclaimed these as one of the best stamp accessories on the market. Just put your stamps in, pile a few heavy books on top and forget them for a week. Most collectors have two books, as that is the secret ..... do NOT touch them for a week and let them dry slowly under weight. Most important. The special formulation plastic coated side is super important as otherwise many stamps STICK to blotter if damp and between 2 sheets of blotting paper, with heavy weight on top. These do not. Again it is some special coating they have figured out which works perfectly for this specific job. Almost any other kind of plastic sheet you may try to experiment with at home will leave a real ugly mirror like “SHEEN” on the gum side if placed in damp, under weight, which looks really stupid, and really shows what you have been doing. These do NOT. The books last for decades. They really do. A 10/- C of A Roo used and light creased copy will be $100 retail, and one that is nice and flat $200. So the cost of the book is paid 3 fold with just one stamp that is saved. Retail Price is $38 each. For readers we offer 27½% off retail special deal for purchases of two books

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation This month I look at a proposal for the APF to introduce a Subject Philately Class at national exhibitions, Adelaide Stampex 2014, a publication on the APF replica cards, the second in the Abandoned Stamp Card series and the second part of an outline of the role of an Australian Commissioner to an international exhibition.

Topical philately

The APF has been discussing the introduction of a Topical or Subject Class at National level. While there is a well established Thematic Philately Class available at National and International levels, there is a group of collectors who collect by subject and for whom the Thematic Philately Class does not provide a way for them to exhibit which matches their collecting interests. While the two classes may sound similar, they are in many ways quite different. Exhibitors in the Thematic Philately Class must develop a detailed theme while exhibitors in the Subject Class would be able to concentrate on stamps showing a particular topic. Exhibitors in Thematic Philately must arrange their stamps with a detailed theme which will often involve showing stamps not showing their topic.

Kookaburra Maximum Card

For, example, a thematic exhibit on cars might include chapters on car makers and designers, environmental impact, fuel and manufacturing and include stamps and philatelic material illustrating these chapters and not showing cars. A thematic exhibit on birds might include chapters on bird evolution, bird adaptations, man and birds, bird habitats, food and predators and again include philatelic material not showing birds. Many collectors collect by subject. They may collect stamps showing birds, mammals, flowers, cars, planes or another topic. In a subject philately class, they would be able to exhibit their stamps in a manner which comes naturally Loon shown on a postal stationery postcard from Canada 48 - Stamp News

Emu shown on a New South Wales stationery to a collector of subject or topic philately. For example, a collector of bird stamps would be able to display their stamps in taxonomic order ie showing stamps organised by the various groups of birds such as penguins, albatross, herons etc. A display of cars could be arranged by car maker, by model or by year of production. The APF discussion paper on the proposed new class gives the intent of the class as ‘to provide collectors the opportunity to exhibit material which in itself, or when grouped together, would not be suited to either the Traditional or Thematic classes’. Subject philately is distinguished from Thematic philately as follows: Subject: A “branch of knowledge” or “course of study” as chosen by the exhibitor; Thematic: An elaborate “story book” approach from start to finish, which expands upon and develops beyond the initial “branch of knowledge” or “course of study”. In a subject exhibit, the connection between the items in the exhibit will be by subject shown and not a thematic theme or Traditional Country. There must be a

connection between the items in the exhibit. The subject exhibit must include philatelic material only. [Exhibits wishing to include nonphilatelic material should consider the Open Class as the avenue to exhibit. Exhibits wishing to include private First Day Covers (FDCs) need to consider the First Day Cover Class as the avenue to exhibit]. The marking system would be as follows: Treatment 25, Philatelic Knowledge 20, Subject Knowledge 20, Condition 10, Rarity - Difficulty of Acquisition 20, Presentation 5. The Introduction Page would be evaluated on whether if it: • Introduces the purpose of the exhibit • Defines the scope of the exhibit • Explains the structure of the exhibit • Has a plan of the exhibit • Mentions the most important literature/ references The Treatment in Subject philately embraces all elements of philately as outlined below: • All philatelic elements acceptable in other Stamp News - 49

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation FIP classes; and • All elements initiated, introduced, or approved by a bona fide postal service that otherwise would not be acceptable in any FIP class (eg. Cinderellas, presentation folders, publicity material, FDCs). The exhibit must be developed according to a logical plan leading through the exhibit. It may include aspects of the subject of the stamp such as the way from the essays via proofs to the issued stamp with its printing phases and all kinds of varieties including FDCs. The subject needs to be shown on each item throughout the exhibit. The structure of Subject based exhibits will typically be classified by one of the following: • Scientific or Systematic (eg. species of bird, paintings by an artist, areas of discovery) • Organisational (eg. Red Cross) • Repetitive Events (eg. Olympics) • Time Related (eg. historical/ Proposed stamp design for a 5/- Sturt stamp chronological mapping of the subject but without a • The written explanations should be concise. connecting storyline eg. • The usage means the showing of need for Voyages of Captain Cook). Rarity and Difficulty of Acquisition: Rarity is directly related to the philatelic items shown and to the relative scarcity of this material (however, not the value). For example usage of material can be inexpensive but difficult to obtain. Presentation: The criterion of “Presentation” requires an evaluation of the clarity of display, the text as well as the overall aesthetic balance of the exhibit. • Good use of the page with not too much white space on the pages. • The write up is clear, concise and relevant to the material shown and to the subject chosen for the exhibit.

The exhibitor should display their depth of knowledge of the subject, rather than just a collection of items. • The written word and other aspects are a secondary part of the exhibit and should not overpower philatelic material on each page of the exhibit. Condition: Items should be shown in the best condition possible. Mint stamps and Minisheets are preferable to Commissioner waiting to deliver exhibits used copies where single items Stamp News - 51

A book listing all of the replica cards, including the black prints and overprinted cards, has been prepared by Martin Walker and is expected to be published at Adelaide Stampex 2014.

Abandoned Stamp Card No 2

The second in the series of Abandoned Stamp Cards will be released in conjunction with Adelaide Stampshow 2014. The design of the card will feature a Charles Sturt design which was prepared by the Note Printing Branch in about 1943, as part of a high value definitive series featuring Famous Australians intended to replace the high value Robes stamps.

Adelaide Stampex 2014

Adelaide Stampex 2014, the second half-national exhibition in 2014, will be held 10-12 October 2014 at the Drill Hall, Torrens Parade Ground, Adelaide. Stampex 2014 will include national classes in Traditional, Postal Stationery, Revenues, Polar & Picture Postcards. A highlight of the exhibition will be the Postcard Challenge comprising teams of four participants (2 x 1 frame and 2 x 5 frame entries) from around Australia. Adelaide Stampex will also include dealers and meetings and will be a wonderful venue to meet your philatelic friends. Plan now to attend. Being a Commissioner to an International Exhibition: Part 2 Before the Exhibition Opens In the first part of this article I looked at the role of being an Australian commissioner before an exhibition. In this second part of the article I cover some of the responsibilities of the Commissioner while they are attending the exhibition. On arrival at the airport in the city of the exhibition the Commissioner’s first job is to collect the trunk containing the exhibits and pass through customs. As the trunks are carried in checked baggage there is an anxious wait for the trunks to appear at baggage claim and relief when it does. The Commissioner will have completed all of the custom documentation and requirements provided by the Exhibition. They will now follow the customs

instructions provided by the Exhibition. These will vary for each country and for each exhibition. Often the exhibits will now be taken into custom bond and transferred under bond to the exhibition where there may be a customs office responsible for releasing the exhibits at the Exhibition. In other cases the exhibits will be cleared for entry by customs. The Commissioner will normally be met by representatives of the Exhibition organising committee (or in some cases by Post Office staff) and transported to either their hotel or (especially if they are still carrying exhibits) to the exhibition. If the exhibits have been placed under bond, the commission will go to the exhibition and collect the exhibits from the customs office or the customs agent. With the exhibits the Commissioner with go to the bin room where they will hand the exhibitions over to the exhibition organizers. This requires that every page in every exhibit is checked jointly by the Commissioner and a representative of the exhibition and checked against the inventory form. Given that there are 80-128 sheets in each exhibit and the commission might have 15 exhibits or more this can take a considerable time. Remember also that there will be another 60 commissioners also waiting to hand over their exhibits. Under these circumstances it is not surprising that the whole process can take a considerable time and commissioners must be patient. Indeed at one exhibition I can remember the whole process taking most of the afternoon and evening, with commissioners finally returning to their hotels after midnight. If any problems arise, such as missing pages or stamps which have fallen from the page, the Commissioner is responsible for dealing with the problem. Once the exhibits have been past to the exhibition organizers, the next task for the Commissioner is to check the exhibits once they have been mounted in the frames. Have all the pages been mounted? Are they in the correct order and up the right way? Are the frames safe and secure? Are there any physical or security threats to the material? If not, the Commissioner will contact the organizers and have the problem rectified. Next time: During the exhibition Stamp News - 53

Market Matters: British Guiana Stamps go CRAZY!

All readers know by now I feel sure, of the massive price the 1856 1¢ British Guiana Black on Magenta unique stamp obtained. It was auctioned by Sothebys New York, June 17, 2014. The record price actually paid, after the outrageous 20% auction house “Buyer Fee” added, was $US9.48 million, which on day of the sale was $A10,154,536. FAR less publicity has been given the small BALANCE of the duPont British Guiana that sold for near as much! This price is about TEN times what duPont That really speaks volumes for the health of the purchased it for in 1980. Many at that time said the price was absurd, and the buyer would certainly lose money on it. In fact, duPont paid 3 or 4 times what Weinberg paid only 10 years earlier. Weinburg paid 5 or 6 times what Australian Frederick Small paid. Which in turn was more than Arthur Hind paid etc! Sold for FIFTY times estimate! amazing in a USA economy, where annual interest rates have been negligible.

Global and very positive Media.

Mainstream and POSITIVE media for stamps is very scarce these days. I had many media calls, and this long interview was on National primetime ABC radio here - tinyurl.com/GlenBG Stampboards.com was literally the FIRST outlet on earth to publish the price, and had several members in the room with a smartphone and video, and they added a posted commentary, and video tinyurl.com/1856BG1c Feldman offered the interesting balance of the duPont award winning British Guiana classics collection in Geneva Switzerland, on June 27. The superb Koichi Sato “Grand Prix d’Honneur” collection of TASMANIA was also offered by Feldman earlier on the same day. One pretty piece from that sale was the 1853 1d

Courier strip 4 shown nearby on internal state cover, that was invoiced for 33,600 Euro - or near $A50,000. Whilst watching the Feldman Guiana auction live by computer, I had an email from the SG Catalogue Editor thanking me for some info and pix he had requested. I suggested he drop everything and tune into the Feldman feed, as it meant he’d need to reprice the entire country 19th Century, and after he watched 15 minutes of it he replied - “That’s extraordinary! Hugh”. The 130 early British Guiana lots were invoiced for €6,481,380 (plus Swiss GST if not exported.) That base figure on the day was $US8,844,360 - not very far short of what the unique 1¢ realised! EVERY lot sold, and to intense bidding - I listened to the sale live. Ricky Verra is a describer at Feldman Switzerland, and a regular on stampboards.com and posted this first hand summary “It was absolutely crazy. David has never seen anything like it. Not even the Kanai Mauritius sale we had in 1993 can compare apparently. We had about 30 people in the room, and about the same on the internet who had logged in to bid.” “One client in the room basically bought every single lot. And was underbid by 2 different guys on the phone to these crazy prices. It was completely unexpected. He turned up 15 minutes before the sale was to begin. Pre-sale estimate was €1.1m. Final invoices were €6.481m!” “The craziest thing was the client who bought near every lot didn’t even know the 1¢ was sold by Sotheby’s a week ago ... so we’re still no closer to knowing who bought that” - Verra concluded. Stamp News - 55

Market Matters I understand this buyer later attempted to buy the 4 lots he did not secure in the room by offering the buyer a profit over what he paid. Incredible story. Illustrated nearby is Lot 84, the 1856 4¢ standard issue SG 25, Cat £17,000. Very similar looking to the unique 1¢, but many examples of this 4¢ are recorded, indeed several were in this sale. Estimated at a sensible 3,000 Euro, it was invoiced for 156,000 Euro. Over FIFTY times estimate. Astounding. The other 4¢ reds of duPont got similar massive prices.

Sloppy Cert, sloppy description.

It has a 2014 BPA Cert which states it has “thins”. Feldman cat made no mention of thins. The BPA were also sloppy, as I can see obvious creases to both NW and SE corners, and they do not mention them. Indeed I’ll bet the paper is cut into at many points from the steel nibbed pen used to initial it - also not mentioned anywhere, by anyone. Pretty poor really, for a stamp worth what a new Ferrari costs. None of this very poor condition detail was in the Feldman sale cat, or on the web, and yet it STILL got 7½ times full SG catalogue price - unheard of for very badly damaged old imperfs! “Concise” near 450 pages thick. “In 40 years as auctioneer, I have never had the experience where every prices. single lot was underbid to an astonishing Hugh Jefferies and co-editors of this huge full multiple of the original estimate, leaving no lot colour opus should be very proud, as it is now nearly unsold!”, said David Feldman at the end of this 450 pages thick. historic auction. The Community boxes come in various modules each typically of 15 small boxes per module as can be seen nearby in photo I took this week in Whitehorse Yukon. Unloved and surrounded by weeds. From a small group of 100 or so boxes like the ones from Whitehorse, to far larger groups of many 100s like the other one illustrated nearby, in suburban Toronto. The larger modules can generate vast amounts of litter, as all the junk mail and unwanted material is lazily tossed away on the ground, as can be seen on

The one Canada Post likes best is the Group/ Community mailbox (CMB) now inflicted on about 25% of Canadians and growing fast. Costing the PO just $C108 per address - and is set to grow fast. The “Collect In Person” Delivery facility such as a Post A Canadian urban eyesore!

Market Matters

the photo nearby. A strong wind and this rubbish would spread everywhere. Canada Post provides no rubbish receptacles around the boxes. The boxes are a favourite target for graffiti artists too. Thieves target them to steal credit cards, passwords, bank account details, and other data they can fake your ID from.

A goldmine for thieves.

The fronts of the boxes open in one master-key movement for the Contractor to add mail quickly, and thieves just crowbar that door open at night etc.

Odd thing for hotel lobby! 60 - Stamp News

Near all population of the country! The stampboards thread has news stories and Police photos of large quantities of stolen mail that thieves were caught with. tinyurl.com/CanadaCMB is a heated 150 post discussion on stampboards of the CMB spread, and recent large postal rate increase there. “This change will provide significant savings to Canada Post and will have no impact on the two thirds of Canadian households that already receive their mail and parcels through community

Glen Stephens

J. J. Tillard: world SPM expert mailboxes, grouped or lobby mailboxes or rural mailboxes” Canada Post claimed. I think these blocks of boxes look ugly and weird, but they certainly were widespread, and are becoming even more so as time goes on. No idea why the population of large Canadian cities have meekly accepted them, but they appear to have done so. Saw dozens driving about in Newfoundland today, and they looked terrible.

Stamp Serendipity.

Travelling around the world a lot as I do, there is often an unexpected stamp connection along the way. This month I flew to the tiny French “colony” of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, surrounded by Canada. Not often do you travel to a country with NO traffic lights - even tiny Nauru has some of those! The photo above shows nearly the entire population of this little place

The tiny little Air Saint-Pierre plane landed back in Newfoundland, whilst gale force winds from Hurricane Arthur were beating down, and I really thought the plane would flip on landing. When checking into my tiny little 12 room hotel in Saint-Pierre (about the largest on the island!) I saw several large and impressive hard-bound books on stamps in the lobby, for guests to peruse. I asked the owner who fortunately spoke some English (unlike most on the island) what was the story on those thick and impressive philatelic books. He seemed to respond the author was a local born resident, and the stamps inside were from his collection of the stamps of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon, and would I like to meet him? Naturally I was very keen to do that, and we met up the next day. What a small world we live in!

Stamp world is very small!

The author was Jean-Jacques Tillard, and reading the credits it was clear his Saint-Pierre collections had won him an amazing bevy of a dozen or so Gold Medals or better recently - including one at the huge Melbourne 2013 EXPO. His English was very good, and we had an interesting chat over coffee. The lavish books he does in numbered editions of about 500 copies each, and it seems most sell. Tillard owns near every known rarity from this country. From the fabulous nineteenth century Stamp News - 61

Market Matters overprints of which some are unique, to the complex wartime 1941 and 1942 France Libre issue overprint errors etc. In WW2, Charles deGaulle dispatched vessels to seize the archipelago on behalf of the Free French from the Vichy Government, on Xmas Day 1941. This secretly planned assault breached the Monroe Doctrine, and apparently infuriated the Americans, creating lasting mistrust between Roosevelt and deGaulle. Tillard is the world’s foremost expert on this country, and he issues Expert Certificates on all aspects of that country’s stamp issues. Until I leafed through these volumes, I had NO idea the issues of Saint-Pierre et Miquelon were so long-lived, so complex, Dozen or so Gold Medals and so attractive. Tillard is very enthusiastic about his passion, and has even persuaded the FIAF to stage an exhibition there September 2428. Most of the official Judges will stay in our 12 room hotel. Judging will be by an internationally-accredited panel using the standards of the International Federation of Philately (FIP), and eight levels of medal will be awarded. 62 - Stamp News

New SA & NT Cancel Books

The South Australian Study Group has after 30 years of work and collaboration, issued this huge 3 volume opus work on cancels. “The hand-held Postmarks of South Australia and the Northern Territory” is the full title and the set of books really fills a carton, I can tell you as I’ve mailed out quite a few! The Committee kindly gave me an advanced

Glen Stephens

Owns all major SPM rarities. “nearly final” review set at the Canberra National stamp show earlier this year, and two of the authors Neville Solly and Tony Presgrave are shown nearby with their new “baby”! The other main local contributor, Martin Walker was also in a group shot, but I sadly lost that image on my computer here in Canada! It lists all Post Offices in South Australia and the Northern Territory and their numeral cancels and date-stamps (including each type illustrated and rated for rarity) along with opening and closing dates, and ancillary illustrations. The set was on display at the stampboards.com stand, and dozens of folks who were specialised in all kinds of others areas perused it with great interest, so their timing was superb.

Near 1000 large pages.

This is a huge set - near 1000 pages, and the retail price of $A175 for such a set is well justified, as locating just one scarcer cancel, or earliest or latest date will repay many times over. The detail inside is quite enormous, and is well outside the scope of a monthly magazine review, but suffice to say if you collect or are interested in this area you must secure a set. The nice strike overleaf of the Squared Circle “EVELEEN SA” cancel sold at Australian Prestige auction in September 2011 for $A4,140 when all fees were added. The estimate was just $A750, and the stamp is worth about 20¢ without the postmark. Would you have known it was a $A4,000+ piece? Stamp News - 63

Market Matters Other SA “Squared Circle” postmarks can get massive prices too, and if you own this book set, you may well stumble across some. tinyurl.com/SC-SthA is the near 1,600 post discussion on South Australia “Squared Circle” postmarks, started on stampboards.com by Stamp News columnist Tony Presgrave. If you have an interest in this area, it contains a ton of data recorded New SA/NT cancel books nowhere else, and maybe you can add some new info to the database, and update any new strikes recorded? shown above, and has a huge stamp den packed to the ceiling with other SA/NT and other state cancels, and many scarce Australian “usage” covers as well. Canada Cancel Treasure Trove! Along with fellow Torontonian, Greg Ioannou, Whilst in Canada we attended a large dinner at his they between them have probably the finest collection home kindly organised by David Hopper, a long-time of these cancels in the world - all 10,000 miles from client, and active member of stampboards.com Adelaide! I have a carton of those ready to mail to clients, and they are very easy to follow books and rarity rate 1000s of Queensland cancels, numeral and town datestamps. I was mailed an interesting one on Western Australian postmarks too I’ll take a look at in due course.

PAIR of imperf panes from top LH, hand numbered “XXX/250” in margin, AND the matching AP card, $A170___ (Stock code 629KM) G. Normal perforated M/S & IMPERF sheet used on 23x32cm air cover to you $A70 post free Global! (Stock Code 629KO) Many more choices, inc. covers, and all photos are here – www.tinyurl.com/imperfsAAT order online: www.tinyurl.com/GlenOrder Cheques, money orders, cash, all credit cards, Amex, PayPal, and bank transfer accepted at ZERO extra fee. Rigidly Packed Post is $A4 in Australia (Add $5 for Registered, if needed), or $A9 Foreign Air (Add $A12 Registered if needed.)
