Mossgreen & Prestige Philately announce merger

Mossgreen Auctions and Prestige Philately have merged to create one of the most powerful brands in the philatelic market. Charles Leski of Mossgreen (following its merger with Leski Auctions in 2013) and Gary Watson of Prestige Philately have enjoyed a healthy rivalry for more than 30 years. The success of their respective businesses helped to drive interest and engagement in the burgeoning philatelic market. That market is today estimated to be worth in excess of $50 million. The new entity will commence trading from 1 December 2014 as Mossgreen Philatelic Department. Gary Watson, will become Head of Philately, Mossgreen. Charles Leski, Managing Director, Mossgreen, said he was thrilled with the opportunity to work with Gary Watson. “Gary is someone that I’ve admired since he first entered the market in the early 1980s,” he said. “He has been a formidable competitor so the opportunity to work with him rather than in opposition to him is something that I’m excited about. He is undoubtedly one of the most knowledgeable people in philately in Australia. “Ultimately, our passion for philately and our combined experience will be important assets for the new operation. I believe our clients will be the beneficiaries of that.” Mr Leski said the appointment of Gary Watson will give him more time to introduce new categories into the business and an opportunity to expand projects that are sitting on the drawing board.” Gary will bring key staff with him to Mossgreen. The first series of auctions to take advantage of the merger are scheduled for 5 & 6 March, 2015. 6 - Stamp News

The fantastic journey of a family letter during time of War across continents - Spink China SPINK CHINA, HONG KONG - The 7th December 1941 is etched in the minds of millions of people across the world in terms of Pearl Harbour. Within the next year Japanese forces had conquered a vast tract of territory in the region; Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaya, Burma, Thailand, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, the other islands making up the Dutch East Indies (DEI), Wake Island, Guam and the Philippines had all fallen. The Philippines was the last major country to fall to the Japanese. When they landed on Luzon, the primary island, US Forces retreated to the Bataan Peninsula and Corregidor where they held out until 9th April 1942 and 6th May respectively. When they finally surrendered, they were force-marched to Camp O’Donnell from where they were dispersed to many sub-camps to work on projects to clear up and repair damaged infrastructure. In March 1942 Col. John Vance wrote a letter from the Philippines to his wife using the official War Department envelope. As no war ships were still stationed in the area, it is suggested that this letter was rowed out to a waiting submarine, thereafter enter the postal system in Melbourne and thence onward to his wife in Maryland, USA. The envelope (Lot 2241) is on sale at Spink China on 18 January 2015 within the David Tett’s Collection of Prisoner of War Mail in East Asia and Dutch East Indies. After the war Col. Vance wrote his memoirs, in which he narrates how he came to the Philippines in 1940 and took on his duties as a US Army Finance Officer. He was responsible for disbursing money for all supplies bought, labour hired, vehicles and ships commandeered, and above all paying for all Philippine Army expenses since it had come into

the service of the US. He details how, even during the siege of Bataan and Corregidor, bills had to be paid, and money sent to the southern islands to allow military units to continue to make purchases and pay their men. With the fall of Corregidor, Vance became a prisoner of war; the Japanese knew who he was and questioned him endlessly about the location of money. He was moved to Bilibid, then Tarlac, Taiwan and finally Manchuria, where he was when the war ended. Other mail from Col. Vance is also included in the auction.

75th Anniversary of The Battle of The River Plate The Battle of the River Plate took place on the 13ᵗʰ of December 1939, bringing the first victory of the Second World War and lifting the country’s morale. For the Royal Navy this battle was an expression of the centuries old tradition of achieving mastery of the seas through offensive spirit in battle and a willingness to take risks.

The British Forces Philatelic Bureau, supported by the HMS Ajax and River Plate Veterans Association, has produced a special commemorative cover to mark this 75th anniversary of The Battle of the River Plate. It will be released for sale on

the 13ᵗʰ December 2014. The cover features images taken from the memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum, unveiled earlier this year. It includes silhouettes and badges of the ships as well as the broad pennant of Commodore Harwood. The stamp on the cover will be cancelled using a unique BFPS numbered handstamp depicting the Royal Navy crown, which is atop of all ships’ badges. The cover comes complete with a splendid A4 double-sided insert in full colour giving more information about the battle. The cover and insert are presented in a cellophane sleeve to create a high quality souvenir of a truly historic event. Malcolm Collis, Archivist for The HMS Ajax & River Plate Veteran’s Association, said, “Every anniversary of the Battle is important, but this year being the 75th has added significance. BFPS has produced a superb collectible cover for this important event and the Association was delighted to have been involved in its design and production.” The souvenir covers may be purchased from the BFPS online shop (www.bfps.org. uk/shop) and cost £6 for the standard cover and £15 for the double signed cover (including UK/BFPO p&p). They are available to order now on a strictly first-come-firstserved basis. The covers are also available by post by sending a cheque (payable to ‘BFPS CIC’) to BFPS The Old Post Office Links Place Elie Fife KY9 1AX. BFPS is officially licensed by the MOD and is a not-for-profit company run by volunteer Veterans. Stamp News - 7

This month I am very pleased to provide a selection of items for comment from the Roland Geitenbeek collection of Woodblocks of Victoria, conducted by Phoenix Auctions on October 25. This follows upon other occasional columns featuring Figure 1. Unique block of four 6d on cover not dear Colonial Australia, an ongoing series included in my collection, given the chance. inaugurated this year. Many years ago someone, clearly not a fan of Roland commenced a specialised collection of mine, made the comment that all I knew in Philately this world renowned classic series in the mid-1990s, was Victoria’s “Fergusson’s”, a term I had not and purchased a swathe of my personal collection encountered previously or since; presumably a for a springboard leap in to this new found philatelic reference to the Mr Fergusson of the stamp printing passion. Many of my key items had been dispersed firm Campbell & Fergusson, responsible for some by this time, and it is a great credit to Roland’s printings of Victoria’s enigmatic Half-length series. collecting tenacity that he was able to track-down Whilst it is true the Half-lengths are my personal and subsequently acquire many of the “one’s which favourite, the Woodblocks of Victoria are not far had gotten away”, together with many items I never behind. After all, these included the world’s first owned, but would have been delighted to have dedicated Registered and Too Late stamps, and were the very first bicoloured stamps of the British Commonwealth, not bad claims to fame! The items selected for comment include several which I once owned; my thanks to Phoenix for use of the scans. Prices realised do not include buyer’s premium. Lot #32 (Figure 1) is believed to be Figure 2. Three out of four stamps with full sheet margin! 8 - Stamp News

Figures 3 and 4. Underappreciated cover or overpriced stamp?: Jury still out

Australian Colonies are rare with full sheet margin attached, and to find three out of four in that form on the one cover is little short of remarkable. Here are the 1/- marginal, and marginal single and pair of the 6d, used Oct 19 1857 MaldonSwitzerland. Philately as Art few philatelic connoisseurs would dispute. Realised $3800 against estimate $5000. Single stamps to fill “gaps” in traditional collections often punch above their weight at auction, such being the allure of “completion” which drives that collecting obsession. The Geitenbeek collection contained a number of elusive unused and used stamps which were targeted by traditional general collectors, and these often sold very well. I’m bemused, however, that very scarce stamps on cover can get overlooked in the rush to fill those gaps. A good example was #72 (Figure 3), which contained a fine example of Rouletted 6d in the reddish brown shade (SG 53), which is far scarcer than the other two listed shades, on Jul 27

the only 6d block of four recorded on cover, and a lovely Official it is, used May 5 1855 HamiltonMelbourne, paying quadruple Inland letter rate. Given perhaps just six blocks of four exist, this is indeed a fortuitous survivor. It realised £750 (then $1200) at a Purves sale in 1981, and $3500 when I sold nearly 20 years ago, so the $2200 (estimate $2600) paid by the new owner was very good value. Offered as #46 (Figure 2) under the Six Pence issues, I had this item under the Registered banner when I owned it. Figures 5 and 6. 1857 cover Melbourne-London, carried aboard Emeu which struck the Guttal el Bunna reef in the Red Sea. This well known maritime incident item, sought after by Postal historians including those of the Middle East, realised $575 (estimate $500), when #73 (Figure 4), an off-cover example of the Rouletted 6d in less scarce orange-yellow (SG 53b), described with “tiny thin”, made $230 against an estimate of $150. Gap-fillers ruled in this cross-comparison. I don’t often feature unused stamps, but #85 (Figure 5) and #93 (Figure 6) are rather special. The experimental separations employed by Victoria during the 1850s are a study in themselves, and some rate amongst the rarest catalogued (and uncatalogued) stamps of the world, and the Woodblocks contain a disproportionate number of these very desirable issues. The first mentioned is 6d Serpentine roulette 10-10½ (SG 58), and second 6d Serrated 18-19 (SG 60), with perhaps 5-6 unused examples recorded, most with defects. These are generally regarded as the finest examples extant; I had three of each at one time from which to select the best. Phoenix used the description for one “offered only once in a generation”, although this can be reliably said for both. They realised $3800 (estimate $1800) and $5250 (estimate $2000),

respectively. Here, and elsewhere, the provenance which I had gone to great lengths to attribute was incomplete or omitted, which is unfortunate as the history of stamps where it can be traced is becoming increasingly important in this world of incessant tampering and “enhancement”. For the record, the respective provenance is Green/Harvey/Perry, and Pack/Forster/Perry. #93 had sold for just $800 in my auction of Mar 13 1990, which provides an indication of just how far some of this material has come since the days of Colonials being relatively unloved. I have often expressed in this column my distaste for Kangaroo Specimen “varieties”, and CTO quartercancels which can be allocated to distribution batch by the study of minuitae, and more particularly Figure 8. World class cover, comparatively pedestrian price 10 - Stamp News

Office Reference collection, such by then was the demand from collectors for most obsolete stamps. Only two examples now exist, the other in The Royal Collection. Sold for $5000 against estimate of $3500, extremely good value in comparison with Kangaroo Specimen sub-types which have realised five figure sums despite being available (readily) in far greater numbers. Ex Harvey/ Perry. Figure 10. The really great covers can also be great value for money One of the great 20th century Connoisseur the absurd prices often paid for such material. I don’t collectors was the have any problem, however, with the Specimen Italian, Tomasini. His tastes were simple: he wanted that was #137 (Figure 7). This was overprinted I nothing but the best. So it was with his example believe in 1870 to prevent staff pilferage of Post of a 6d Too Late on cover, #158 (Figure 8), which

fetched £3100 in the 1981 Tomasini sale. This Apr 12 1856 cover Geelong-London bears largemargined examples of both regular 6d and Too Late, the former showing the quirky knife-cuts employed by staff at Geelong P.O. to facilitate separation. The Too Late stamp was required as an additional prepayment to ensure despatch of the article in that day’s mail. Phoenix stated “A beautiful cover and considered by many to be the best Too Late cover in existence”, which I obviously did not disagree with in 1981. It realised a disappointing $4600 (estimate $6000). I was particularly fond of the three different Registered Essays I owned, of which #160 (Figure 9) was one. Printed in rose and gold, from an unadopted key plate, this type of material is truly of museum-quality, although fortunately is available to us all. I sold this in my auction of Jul 1 1989 for $1300, and was pleased for Roland to see it realise $7500 (estimate $9000). Readily available mint and used so-called “blue chip” traditional stamps of the world can sell for much more. I regarded #205 (Figure 10) as one of my favourite Woodblock covers; a convergence of superb quality and considerable rarity (for the key Rouletted Registered). From the historic Harvey collection, I had paid SF3180 for this item in 1975, then a considerable sum. Henry Harvey, who had commenced collecting in the 1880s, was amongst an elite circle of London Philatelists, which included The Duke of York (later King George V). Harvey died in 1933, but it was not until 1975 that the collection of Victoria would be auctioned. Estimated $4000, this great cover realised $6000, precisely the sum I sold it for 20 years ago.

Figure 12. Mona Lisa of Colonial Essays awaits appreciative new home The Dale-Lichtenstein collection of Victoria, part of one of the greatest general collections ever formed, contained a handful of items which I

Figure 13. Record multiple, record aggregate for an imperforate Victoria stamp 12 - Stamp News

Figure 14. A very rare, very undercatalogued stamp would dearly have loved to have included in my collection. In the 1980s I wrote to the Trustee of the Louise Boyd-Dale philatelic holdings to enquire would the collection ever be sold. I was informed that event was not likely to occur in the foreseeable future. In fact, it was auctioned in London in 1990; I would have deferred commencing the sale of my Victoria in 1987 if I had been better informed. Amongst those “handful of items” was #207 (Figure 11), a brilliant unused example of the Rouletted Registered; the only other unused example reposes in The Royal Collection. I rate this as one of the great classic era British Commonwealth stamps. I would not have left

England in 1990 without that stamp (which sold for a paltry £3000). Now estimated at $18000, it sold for $14250. This is a stamp for which an SG catalogue value of £50000 is justifiable. A contender for the Mona Lisa of Australian Colonial 1850s Essays was #211 (Figure 12). Unsold at perhaps slightly ambitious estimate of $30000, it is undeniably a beautiful Essay, one of two similar items which I was once proud to call my own, ex Rundell/Purves. I would prefer this item at $24000 (reserve) to many, many Australian Commonwealth items which realise that and more, yet exist in greater numbers, and fall well short of qualifying as Philately as Art. Another Harvey item which I was very fond of was #220 (Figure 13), the record multiple of the imperforate 2/-, a strip of six, the 12/- aggregate being the highest for any Victoria imperforate item. A friend of mine, who was considering buying it, complained “But it’s touched at base”, to which I replied “Fiddlesticks”, or words to that effect. Estimated $3500, it realised $4200. I sold it 20 years earlier for $4500, and would not have been surprised if this great multiple had breached five figures. The Rouletted 2/- is a much rarer stamp than generally accepted. Tellingly, Geitenbeek had just one single, and #229 (Figure 14), the remarkable vertical pair, the only multiple in private hands. Ex Ferrary/Harvey/Perry, it fetched $3800 against estimate of $5000. I had paid $4000 in 1981 (from the buyer in the Harvey sale), and sold for $6000 20 years ago. Some great items never receive their due recognition. In summary, I thought the Geitenbeek sale generally did well: the classic auction cocktail comprising high and low realisations and everything in between being its essence. It will be interesting to await the next great collection of Woodblocks, although I doubt that what was achieved in the past by two collectors will ever be witnessed again. Seasonal greetings and best wishes to readers. Stamp News - 13

stamps which I wrote about a few years back with no response. Now thanks to John Isles I have much more information which I have reproduced below. “These are evidently designs for stamps that were never issued, made at a time when Crete was still under Turkish rule. In 1897, the date on the upper Crete 2-lepta design, there was turmoil between the Greek and Turkish communities of Crete including the burning of the Christian quarters of the town of Chania. Greece dispatched a naval squadron, and a number of volunteers arrived in Crete, as well as a small Greek military force, intending to fight the Turks, but hopes of independence or union with Greece were thwarted by the Great European Powers – Britain, Russia, France, and Italy – who

divided the island into occupation zones. It was not until 1898 that, after protracted negotiations and further atrocities, Crete became an autonomous state under Turkish suzerainty. The first stamps issued by the Cretan state were in 1900. There were indeed provisional issues made around this time by occupying European administrations and later by some rebels, but none resembling the designs you have shown. These provisional issues are shown in Volume 2 of the Hellas catalogue by A. Karamitsos. I see no evidence of a British connection in the designs you’ve discussed. The Greece 2-lepta, (Fig. 1), shows the head of Athene, and the two Crete 2-lepta designs show, I feel sure, a seated female personification of Crete (Fig. 2). Her

appearance might well be inspired by Britannia, of course. The word above Crete’s knees, (Fig. 3), is ELEFTHERIA, or “Freedom” in Greek, which Crete clearly did not have at the given date of 1897. The parallel designs for Greece and Crete clearly hint at the possibility of a future union between the two lands, which was in fact to be completed later, in 1913. In 1897 the currency of Crete was the Turkish piaster, not the Greek lepta shown in the denomination of the stamps. So, in short, I think these three pieces are the fantasies of a Greek or Philhellene in 1897 who wished to see the freedom in Crete that it was not yet to enjoy. I hope these notes are useful, and I’m sorry I can’t give you any more definite

Radio. (Fig. 4).

For readers who can remember those evenings at home before the square eyed monster AKA Television arrived in Australia, here is a label from radio station 5AD in Adelaide advertising the program Deadly Nightshade. I don’t remember this particular show, but have memories of Deadly Earnest (Hedley Cullen) and his programs in a similar vein to this. I suspect this label dates from the early 1950s as there were a number of other labels from a similar period in the accumulation that a collector in Adelaide lent me.

Barossa Valley Vintage Festival. (Fig. 5).

This long running festival celebrates the annual wine grape vintage. This label dates from 1951, and I remember going to the 1965 festival by special train. I’m not sure when they stopped issuing labels such as this, but I have not seen any from the 1965 festival. The festival continues and it will not be long before the 2015 Vintage Festival is underway and it is well worth a visit even if only to soak up the atmosphere and Barossa Valley hospitality.

Sutherland Locals. (Fig. 6 and 7).

These stamps have been researched and written about in many journals over a long period of time,

the last being in February 2012 so I thought as an end piece to this column for January I would run it again. I must admit that I find the history of these stamps very interesting. Sutherland & Co. was a private company based in Japan and in about 1870 they issued two stamps for use on mail carried between Tokyo and Yokohama. The two values were Âź Boo and 1 Boo, the Boo being an abbreviation for Ichibu a Japanese coin. About 15 genuine stamps have been recorded, but facsimiles exist of both values and the stamps have been extensively forged as well. The facsimiles are printed on a chalk surfaced paper in somewhat brighter colours than the originals and the forgeries are generally printed on very thick paper.

FAROESE STAMPS 40 YEARS In 1977 I wrote an article for a now defunct American stamp magazine in which I told about the Faroe Islands, then a fairly new stamp-issuing nation. Interest in the islands’ stamps was incredibly strong and many collectors purchased complete sheets of all new issues. This was not particularly difficult as most issues came in small sheets of 20 stamps and face values were generally modest. In my article I predicted an excellent future for Faroese stamps with steady increases of their value. This of course never happened and today the market is inundated with Faroese stamps from the first several years. Thus many of these early issues can now be bought for less than face value. This very probably was my worst philatelic investment suggestion ever!

But the stamps had beautiful designs and many were the work of Polish-Swedish Court Engraver Czeslaw Slania. During his long career he engraved more than 1.000 postage stamps for Sweden and many other postal administrations including the Faroes. On 30 January 2015, 40 years have passed since the Faroe Islands released its first set of definitive stamps. However, this is not entirely true. In 1919, Denmark (of which the Faroe Islands is a part) raised the postage rate to 7 øre. As there were no 7-øre stamps available on the islands it was decided to produce a provisional 2-øre stamp. The overprint was applied by hand to 15.500 5-øre stamps. This arrangement last from 13 January 1919 until the end of the month when supplies of 7-øre stamps arrived from Copenhagen.

Christer Brunström British armed forces occupied the islands during World War II. As no new stamps could be obtained from Denmark, the Tórshavn (the islands’ capital) postal authorities surcharged six stamps with the new denominations of 20, 50 and 60 øre. After the war Danish postage stamps were once again on sale in the islands’ post offices. However, this all ended on 30 January 1975 when the Faroes released its own very first postage stamps. The following year an independent postal administration was established. Already on 1 October 2014, the 40th anniversary of Faroese stamps was celebrated by the issue of four franking labels depicting older Faroese stamps which are all the work of the late Czeslaw Slania. These labels can be obtained from machines in some of the

islands’ post offices. They were printed by a Danish company but the designs are very poor versions of the original stamps. However, these new labels will be an interesting addition to Slania or Stamps on Stamps collections. During the early years some of the more beautiful Faroese stamps were issued. The 1975 definitive stamps showed historic maps, local scenery and landscape paintings. The engraved stamps were the work of Czeslaw Slania. The next stamp issue appeared on 1 April 1976 in connection with the inauguration of the independent postal administration. Once again the stamps are the work of Mr. Slania. They depict a Faroese boat, the islands’ flag and a local postman.

FAROESE STAMPS 40 YEARS In 1977, there was a set showing local birds and another one devoted to the island of Mykines. In 1978, there were three new issues. The same number of new issues was released in 1979 and the first issue of that year was a 25-krone high value stamp showing a magnificent ram. In my opinion this is one of Mr. Slania’s best stamps from the Faroe Islands. During the ensuing years the number of new issues increased each year. Today we can expect at least ten new stamp issues on a yearly basis. Some are released as multi-design sheetlets. It is Faroese Post Office policy to offer its customers as much variety as possible (this is probably not appreciated by all stamp collectors). The Faroese postal rates are quite high and I very

much doubt that many collectors invest in buying complete sheets of all new issues as so many did in the early days. What has been typical for Faroese postage stamps during the past 40 years is the fact that they depict local subjects. A collection of the Faroe Islands will give collectors a good insight into the daily life, history, economy, wildlife and culture of these small islands in the North Atlantic. Those collectors finding today’s Faroese stamp issues too expensive should explore the first ten or 20 years which can often be found at face value or even at a substantial discount. In many ways it’s a buyer’s market as far as the early years of Faroese stamps are concerned.

AAT fully IMPERFORATE Miniature Sheets issued by Australia Post!

In November 2013, Australia Post released 250 x IMPERFORATE panes of 15 mini sheets of stamps. The “1913 Disaster & Isolation” issue, for the Centenary of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) of 1911-14. The AAE left Hobart in December 1911 commanded by Douglas Mawson and returned in February 1914. Mawson was knighted for his achievements, and is regarded as one of the greatest figures of all Antarctic exploration. You needed to phone the PO “800” number, or order online. Cost was well above face value, and the maximum order was ONE sheet a person. Sold out in super-fast time, as you’d expect - within hours I am advised. There will be near none in the secondary market, as collectors who got very lucky, will not be sellers - at any price. I’d guess there are easily 20,000 keen global collectors of AAT, but only 250 of these sheets to go around. If 200 buyers hold on to their sheets for their collections, that leaves just FIFTY to service those 20,000 collectors worldwide. 99% of AAT collectors do not right now realise this IMPERF issue even exists! In the 56 years since AAT first issued stamps in 1957, I can’t recall any other *AAT* imperforates sold by the PO. Each sheet is hand numbered in top left margin, and also comes with a Certificate of Guarantee card from head of AP, confirming that only 250 panes in TOTAL were sold – globally. This is an Official Australia Post Australian Antarctic Territory issue. I am offering these as follows: SUBJECT UNSOLD – please use correct stock code!

A. Fully imperforate MUH or CTO AAT Mini Sheet - $A60 a sheet. (Stock code 629KE) B. Single imperforate sheet, with MASSIVE wide top or base sheet margin. $A80 (Stock code 629KF) C. Stamps in the News - Globally! Cultural icon or cash cow?

Reported at www.washingtonpost.com The cloistered world of postage stamps is roiling again with a rare public airing of dissent in the ranks of the secretive committee of prominent Americans that chooses new stamp images. A postal expert whose 12-year term on the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee ended earlier this year has pleaded with committee members to resist the temptation to choose new stamp images “with the same profit motives as Big Macs, Slurpees, jeans or neighborhood tattoo parlors.” Cary R. Brick has claimed that new stamp subjects are being held hostage by “pie-in-the-sky marketers.” “They come from the corporate world of soft drinks and WalMarts. They are still at the table running the show, and I’m now just another consumer…But I still care deeply about the stamp program, as do philatelists and tens of millions of Americans who use the mail.” This is the latest chapter in an ongoing debate over whether the cash-poor Postal Service should pursue commercial stamp subjects to lure new collectors and revenue at the expense of more enduring cultural images. Brick’s reference to marketers from the “corporate world of soft drinks,” is a criticism of Nagisa Manabe, a former Coca-Cola executive

Donahoe hired in 2012 to reinvigorate the postal brand. Manabe has pushed stamp subjects with a commercial appeal. She moved the stamp program into her department and pushed aside veterans in the program, postal sources have said. Brick has urged the two new committee members, Katherine Tobin and Carolyn Lewis, both former governors of the postal board, to “strive for balance” in choosing stamp subjects. Brick recalls that the committee repeatedly rejected his suggestion of a stamp honouring coal miners. “How in the world can we make that dirty job beautiful? We can’t. Let’s move on to more beautiful subjects,” is how Brick describes the discussion on the committee. Eventually a postal official intervened, and Made in America, a sheet of 12 stamps featuring bluecollars laborers, was released last year to acclaim from collectors.

“What a great place to celebrate him — on a stamp,” the US Postal Service’s director of stamp services and corporate licensing Susan McGowan said. “It is an honour to have the US Postal Service feature the Caped Crusader on this new set of stamps in celebration of his 75th anniversary,” DC Entertainment co publisher Jim Lee responded when asked how he felt about the stamps. He added, “Batman has inspired and influenced fans around the world for generations and will continue to do so for the next 75 years and beyond.”

New stamp issues: from the sublime to the ridiculous Jersey

Reported at jersey.isle-news.com Jersey Post is helping to raise thousands of pounds for the Island’s Poppy Appeal by donating a percentage of all proceeds from philatelic sales of its special Remembrance stamp issue. Sales have raised £4,444 since the launch of the issue in May and Jersey Post is keen to raise even more for this important cause. Entitled ‘Remembrance 2014’, Jersey Post’s stamp issue consists of six stamps and a Miniature sheet which feature delicate watercolours of field poppies, painted by artist Katherine Asher. In a first for British stamps, poppy seeds were encapsulated on two of the stamp designs, sealed behind a thin, transparent, bio-degradable plastic cover. This means the stamps, which can still be used for posting letters, could also be planted between early spring and early summer, to grow the striking red flowers which are so strongly associated with

remembrance.

Canada

Reported at www.newswire.ca A spontaneous burst of affection and excitement, frozen in time by a Canadian newspaper photographer’s lightning-fast reflexes, the “Wait for Me Daddy” photograph became famous to a generation. Now, 74 years later and in time for Remembrance Day, Canada Post has again captured the moment with a commemorative stamp featuring the photograph, accented with poppies. The story behind the photograph is as remarkable as its enduring power as a poignant symbol of homefront sacrifice in the Second World War. On October 1, 1940, Private Jack Bernard and other volunteers in The British Columbia Regiment were marching smartly down Eighth Street in New Westminster to board a ship and sail off to war. Suddenly, Bernard’s five-year-old son broke free of his mother’s grasp and sprinted into the military formation to take his smiling father’s hand. In that instant, an alert Vancouver Daily Province photographer, Claude Dettloff, snapped the shutter. Soon, his unforgettable image of little Warren “Whitey” Bernard was being printed by leading publications throughout North America. It was later used in Canada’s war bond drives with the plea, “help bring my Daddy home.” “Our stamps are carefully chosen to reflect Canada’s rich history,” says Deepak Chopra, President and CEO of Canada Post. “The ‘Wait for Me Daddy’ stamp serves as a reminder of

Philippines

Reported at www.gmanetwork. com Filipinos can now celebrate this year’s National Family Week with stamps issued by the Philippine Postal Corp. based on designs submitted for a much earlier occasion. PHLPost said the stamps were based on entries for a stamp-designing contest for Valentine’s Day. “Initially, the on-the-spot stamp design contest was meant for Valentine’s Day issue of 2014. But since most of the contest winners showed ‘love for the family,’ The Stamp Committee decided to feature the remaining winners as stamps for the National Family Week,” it said. Family Week aims to highlight the importance of families, enhance understanding of their functions and problems, and focus attention on the rights and responsibilities of all family members, PHLPost said.

Authorities in South Australia have made 49 arrests and seized 29.5kg of illicit drugs since January related to people using the internet and mail system to traffic drugs. More than 16,000 tablets have also been seized under Operation Post, as well as 74 litres of the party drug, Fantasy, and 31 litres of precursor chemicals. The issue will be raised with state and federal counterparts at a national meeting of the Law Crime and Community Safety Council later this year. “Internet-based illicit drug trafficking is increasing and these substances are commonly entering our community, largely through the domestic mail system,” the South Australian Attorney General said. “What we need nationally is a more targeted and innovative inter-agency response to this issue. We also need stronger border security, especially for postal items.” Special ASDA anniversary stamp from Grenada launched at the National Postage Stamp Show. edition of the organization’s national magazine, The American Stamp Dealer & Collector was distributed to everyone attending the show and featured the 16page show program in a special centre section. “Our chief goal in producing this historic edition of our annual fall show is to not only celebrate an important anniversary in our hobby, but to show off the excitement and vigorous health of our hobby,” said the president of the ASDA. A key highlight of the show was the precedentsetting international philatelic exhibition consisting of 234 frames of major national and international gold medal exhibits which will test their competitive potential in preparation for World Stamp Expo NY2016 to be held in New York City in two years. The Daniel F. Crime in the mail –Arms trafficking Reported at www.ice.gov

The former owner of two New Jersey defense contracting businesses was charged with mail fraud and violating the Arms Export Control Act for allegedly creating U.S. shell companies to fraudulently obtain contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), and also for downloading export-restricted military technical documents overseas. Alper Calik, of Ankara, Turkey, was arrested upon his entry into the United States and charged with two counts of mail fraud for submitting fraudulent contracts to the Department of Defense claiming to produce items in the United States that were actually manufactured in Turkey. According to court documents, in November 2009 Calik was the co-owner of Clifmax LLC in New Jersey. The company contracted to supply defense hardware items and spare parts. In May 2011, Calik started a second company, Tunamann LLC, based at the same address. Both Clifmax and Tunamann were Stamp News - 27

Only U.S.-based contractors were eligible to obtain that contract and Clifmax was awarded the contract valued at more than $50,000. Shipping records show the parts were subsequently shipped from Turkey to Clifmax’s address in New Jersey and then provided to the Marines. If convicted, Calik faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000 for mail fraud.

Yusuf faces a minimum 15 years in prison, if convicted.

US Postal Service breaches privacy Reported at www.nytimes.com

An internal government report has revealed USPS has been conducting surveillance on far more of the mail passing through its doors than previously acknowledged. A report from the agency’s internal watchdog 28 - Stamp News

found that USPS captured information from the outside of about 49,000 pieces of consumer mail in 2013 and turned much of it over to law enforcement organizations throughout the country, unbeknownst to the intended senders and recipients. This information reportedly did not include the contents of letters and packages, but rather was limited to the information appearing only on the exterior, such as names, addresses, and postmark dates. The mail covers program has been in existence for over a hundred years. It’s also not as invasive as a full search warrant for the contents of mail, which the USPS also grants (although only for federal search warrants; state search warrants aren’t accepted by the agency). In a guide for law enforcement agencies, the USPS explains exactly how the program works: a police officer/law enforcement agent needs to be already conducting an investigation into a suspected felony and have the names and addresses for their intended surveillance targets. The officer must send this information to the USPS through the mail or provide it verbally (in person or over the phone), along with a reason why the mail cover is needed. Then the USPS will begin capturing the information from the exterior of all the targets’ incoming and outgoing mail for up to 30 days (although extensions are available). However, as the report found, there are numerous problems with the way the USPS has been running the mail covers program:

Compiled by

Margo Campbell

Information from the mail of 928 targets was collected even after the surveillance period had ended. Mail cover surveillance was commenced on some targets without sufficient justification from law enforcement, and some USPS employees didn’t keep the written justification on file. The USPS doesn’t appear to have been accurately reporting the total number of mail covers in its official records obtained under Freedom of Information Act requests, which show only 100,000 total requests for mail surveillance between 2001 and 2012 (an average of 8,000 a year, way fewer than the 49,000 mail covers acknowledged in the report).

US Postal Service privacy breached Reported at www.computerworld.com

The USPS joins a growing list of US government agencies which have come under cyber attack this year. The FBI notified the USPS that it suffered an intrusion in September. USPS later confirmed the breach went all the way back “to at least the

beginning of January.” Chinese government hackers are suspected to be behind the cyber attack, reported The Washington Post. Names, birth dates, addresses and social security numbers of 800,000 USPS employees were stolen. Much like the State Department waited before shoring up security, the USPS was aware of the hack in Sept. but took didn’t start repairing the breach until the second weekend in November. Although USPS claimed no customer payment data was taken, “hackers swiped call centre data going back to Jan. 1. That includes names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses of people who contacted the Postal Service’s Customer Care Centre.” The USPS photographs every letter and package mailed in the U.S.; that’s about 160 billion pieces of mail per year. “Tens of thousands” of those images are handed over to law enforcement agencies for additional scrutiny. The USPS reported approving “nearly 50,000 requests last year from law enforcement agencies and its own internal inspection unit to secretly monitor the mail of Americans for use in criminal and national security investigations.” While there was nothing mentioned about hackers pilfering data from that Mail Isolation and Tracking system, there would certainly be lot stored at any given moment since photos of letters and packages are usually “stored for a week to 30 days and then destroyed.” The amount would surely be mind-boggling if it were also compromised since January.

Looking at New Zealand

Commemorating ANZAC

Part 8: Joint NZ-Turkey Issue 1998 It was apparently coincidental that these stamps were issued in the 80th anniversary year of the end of World War I. The official publicity releases make no mention of that but instead focus on the spirit of goodwill that has grown between Turkey and the ANZAC nations since the end of the war. This is reflected in the use of Kemal Ataturk’s famous speech of 1935, referring to the Allied dead as ‘lying in the soil of a friendly country’ to illustrate the official first-day cover. The goodwill is also reflected in the subject of the first stamp – the Turkish statue With Great Respect to the Mehmetcik. The statue was erected in the Canakkale cemetery on the Gallipoli peninsula in 1995 (the 80th anniversary of the landings). Designed by Professor Tankut Oktem, it shows a Turkish soldier carrying a wounded Allied soldier to

Perhaps more realistically, the second stamp shows the statue Mother with Children from the National War Memorial in Wellington, acknowledging the burden that falls on women to keep families together while men are absent, sometimes never to return. It was created by Lyndon Smith in 1964.

The stamps and first-day cover were designed by Dianne Prosser of Wellington and lithograph printed by Southern Colour Print of Dunedin. They were printed in sheets of 50 with the sheet value in the top right corner, the printer’s imprint in the lower left selvedge and the designer’s name in the bottom selvedge at the left. Australia Post’s “Limited Edition” Stamps Introduction

It all began in 2005. On 10th November that year Australia Post released a range of expensive “limited-edition” products. They called it their “Impressions” range and published a special catalogue showing all the “unique gifts and collectables” available. They have been doing it ever since. A lot of the products don’t even contain stamps. The details of 2005 to 2009 were summarised in Part 1 and Part 2 in previous editions of Stamp News. Here is a summary of the 2010 to 2011 “Impressions” releases that contained new mint Australian stamp variations. (I have excluded the Annual Mint and CTO Collections, Souvenir Stamp Sheets (SSS), products containing cancelled stamps and products that do not contain a new stamp variation.)

2010

12 “Impression” products contained mint stamp variations in 2010. They were released in both November and December. The most common price was $89.95 which bore little relationship to the stamp content. One product even included $20 “cash back”! The “Packaging” (pictured before it was dumped in the rubbish bin) cost $1309 – $20 = $1289. This year’s “new” variation was the Stamplet. It was a small minisheet containing a single stamp with a tab on the top! 32 - Stamp News

Revenue Review We’re off

And we’re off into another year of fun packed Revenue chit-chat, with hopefully many new friends made along the way and some new finds thrown in. I trust you all made it through the festive season and are ready to get back into filling those gaps in your revenue collection.

Again

inside cover. The £1 being the highest denomination available in the 1880’s. Users were forced into using multiples of the £1 as make up values, so it’s nice to see it in its entirety. These sheets do of course include both the Major GS listed flaws.

Them Tolls

Last year I showed a few Toll tickets, which are classed as ‘revenue stamped paper’. Figures 2&3 are a couple more. Again, can you please check your holdings and let me know what you have so I can list them in the database.

Starting off this year, I would like to share with you a full sheet of 30 5x6 of the £1 large Chalon of 1882 [fig1]. There are several full sheets around without the outside selvage, mostly coming from Company Rego Articles of Association booklets, whereby a full WA sheet, minus its outer selvage was a perfect fit for the I was hoping not to mention Western Australia, at

Dave Elsmore least for one month, but figure 4 turned up on eBay late last year with a $600 price tag and was bid on instantly. If you can believe the description only 6 were sold!

WA Again

Prominent Victorian Philatelic Dealer Michael Eastick occasionally turns up some revenue gems. This time Mike emailed me figure 5 saying he was about to place this in stock. Less than a handful have survived to date. S.T. [Sample Type] 684 being Waterlow & Sons sample number, which were sent to UPU countries as samples of their work or ‘Tradesman’s Samples’ as they are known. No sooner had I typed this, Mike emailed me saying it

had already sold. Gee you gotta be quick!

Sydney Carrier

New South Wales has very few carrier survivors, so when figure 6 turned up in auction it was going to be a blood bath! Eventually selling for what I feel a very low price of around $550.00. Circa 1930, you just do not see any carriers from this state, so the selling price was somewhat a disappointment.

Dev Tax

Ok, its taken till figure 8 for me to come up with the first unlisted revenue of the year. This Queensland 4/- Development Tax is unlisted in all catalogues,

Revenue Review excepting of course, my free online Revenue Catalogue. This one being dated 40 [in red] for 1940. Check your relief tax revenues for Queensland as you may easily have some Development Tax issues mixed in, as they all bare the same design. Development Tax appears to be in short supply when compared with Relief Tax issues.

Wage Sheet

A nice New South Wales wage sheet recently come up for auction [fig 9]. Collecting revenues on documents for their original use can be very rewarding as early students tended to strip all documents of stamps thinking the document to be of little use or value. If you see full documents best grab them.

Answers

The Victorian revenue ‘no value’ stamp from the November ‘Revenue Review’ issue I asked for help on has had a reply. David Casey from Victoria came fourth to correct me and answer my query as follows; “The graphic you show in your November 2014 ‘Revenue Review’ is not an Exempt Stamp. It is to record the 2d as the duty payable, and it’s payment results in the document being duly stamped. It is not an endorsement seen on the “Not Chargeable” stamps. On all the “Duly Stamped” adhesives I have seen, is written the amount of duty paid in respect of the document. No duty is written on the ‘Not Chargeable” adhesives and it would be inconsistent with the stamp for any to be written”. David many thanks for writing and clearing this up. David has been hard at work on these issues and

Dave Elsmore all of the Transactional, Imposts, Register imprints, Fee Impressions & Comptroller cancels of Victoria. There are 4 large .pdf specialist files in the research tab of ozrevenues.com by David Casey with each being a major study and well worth having a look to compare with your own holdings.

Perfin Corner

Two items of Perfin interest to start the year off are figures 10 & 11. Figure 10 is a cracking ‘COOK’ cancelling device. Cook being from the firm of Thomas Cook the travel company. This 2/6d far outstripping previous recordings of 1d, 2d & 3d. One can only presume the 2/6d revenue fee on the ticket must have been for a round the world trip for 6 people! We may never know. If you want to know more on this company, please go to the free online

Revenue Perfin book at Perfins.com.au and follow your nose into the Western Australia tab and then the ‘Other’ page. Figure 11 is from a recent auction lot with some fabulous multiples within. The £50, £10 & $100 multiples are all record breakers! The Perfin ‘HI’ within is from the Hartford Fire Insurance Co. Often the ‘IH’ has been mistaken for International Harvester. All the Hartford Fire Insurance ‘HI’ Perfins of any value are rated R4 so best go check your HI’s to see just where you have them listed.

I can be contacted by mail: P O Box 66 Springwood 4127 Queensland or an Email link from my web site ozrevenues.com or perfins.com.au

“Desert Magic” Imported Stamp Drying books For those readers who have not seen these Desert Magic books, they are a large A4 sized book (stockbook sized) with thick white Spiro edge binding that as you can see allows them to lay flat. (There is a half sized one which is basically useless in our view.) The pages are of REALLY thick blotting type paper. i.e.thick heavy cardboard thickness. It is some special “fast release” formulation .. no idea what they use, but it really does WORK! There is then a special smooth plastic coating on one side. So you wash your stamps, and if you leave them to air dry on tea towels or blotting paper or newspaper, light creases and bends will always stay there. If they are placed into this book when touch damp (not sopping wet) and left there with the gum side to the plastic side and the front of stamp to the blotter side, they dry perfectly flat, and many light bends and creases vanish. Nearly all of them. It is amazing the difference they make, which is why we sell so many! Readers of www.stampboards.com have acclaimed these as one of the best stamp accessories on the market. Just put your stamps in, pile a few heavy books on top and forget them for a week. Most collectors have two books, as that is the secret ..... do NOT touch them for a week and let them dry slowly under weight. Most important. The special formulation plastic coated side is super important as otherwise many stamps STICK to blotter if damp and between 2 sheets of blotting paper, with heavy weight on top. These do not. Again it is some special coating they have figured out which works perfectly for this specific job. Almost any other kind of plastic sheet you may try to experiment with at home will leave a real ugly mirror like “SHEEN” on the gum side if placed in damp, under weight, which looks really stupid, and really shows what you have been doing. These do NOT. The books last for decades. They really do. A 10/- C of A Roo used and light creased copy will be $100 retail, and one that is nice and flat $200. So the cost of the book is paid 3 fold with just one stamp that is saved. Retail Price is $38 each. For readers we offer 27½% off retail special deal for purchases of two books

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation Happy New Year! 2015 promises to be an exciting year for stamp collectors in Australia and New Zealand with a major National Exhibition in Sydney in April as well as other events throughout the year. This month I look at what’s coming up in 2015, the outcome of the 2014 Australasian Challenge and include the second part of the article on the mechanics of preparing an exhibit for an Australian National exhibition. The philatelic event of the year in Australia will be, without a doubt, the Sydney Stamp Expo 2015 ANZAC Centenary, a Full National Philatelic Exhibition that will be held at the Johnny Warren Sports Centre in Penshurst Park Hurstville to commemorate the Centenary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli in 1915. The Johnny Warren Indoor Sports Centre features excellent car parking facilities both undercover and in the open for about 200 cars. Refreshments will be available within the climatecontrolled facilities. Hurstville is less than 30 minutes from the city centre and is well served by public transport. There will be free offstreet parking within the grounds. The Exhibition will be open for four days from Thursday April 16 until Sunday April 19 2015. Preparing an exhibit: Sheet Protectors Last month I looked at choosing paper for your exhibit. This month I look at sheet protectors. To protect stamps and covers on exhibit sheets in the frames and in transit, all exhibitions require that the exhibit sheet be placed in a protective clear plastic sheet protector. In choosing sheet protectors, the plastic needs to be • • • •

clear archival quality of a suitable size of a suitable weight

Arthur Gray: winner of the Prize for the Best Exhibit, Baypex 2014

As the aim is to display your material clear plastic sleeves are essential to ensure that people looking at your exhibit can see and read it clearly. Many plastics including some used for cover albums contain chemicals designed to enhance the flexibility of a plastic. These chemicals can be damaging to your stamps. In addition some plastics such as PVC degrade into acids and other chemicals which are also harmful to your stamps and covers. Sheet protectors should be made from inert plastic 50 - Stamp News

such as polyester, polypropylene or Mylar which do not have added ‘plasticisers’ or other additives. Sheet protectors should be about 2 mm wider around your page. They should be a snug fit but should not require you to force or bend a page into the protector to avoid damaging your stamps and covers. Remember that the height of the protectors needs to be taken into account to ensure that the page and its protector fit into the frame. For Australian national exhibitions the maximum height to fit comfortably in the frames is 285 mm.

Ian McMahon

Philatelic Development Officer, APF

Sheet protectors should be closed on three sides. They may be side opening or top opening. Top opening protectors generally provide better protection if a stamp or cover comes loose on the page. The weight of a sheet protector is also a consideration. On the one hand use of flimsy sheet protectors (such as the commonly available sheet protectors sold for school or office use) may result in the pages ‘flopping’ when being taken to and from the frames and provide less protection. On the other hand heavy weight protectors add to the total weight of the exhibit which can be a consideration when the exhibits are being transported. Suitable sheet protectors can be difficult to obtain although they are stocked by a small number of

2014 Australasian Challenge Winners North Island New Zealand being presented with the Ed Druce Trophy by Philip Levine, President of the APF dealers. As a service to exhibitors, the APF sells polypropylene and Mylar sheet protectors suitable for exhibiting at Australian National exhibitions and which fit the exhibit pages available through the APF. Polypropylene protectors come in three sizes: 225 mm wide x 285 mm high, 240 mm x 285mm, 457 mm x 285 mm and 465 mm x 285 mm. Mylar protectors are available in three sizes 225 mm x 285 mm, 240 mm x 285 mm and 465 mm x 285 mm. Details can be found on the APF website www.apf. org.au. Stamp News - 51

Market Matters: Cyclone Tracy 40th Anniversary As you read this, it will be exactly 40 years since the devastating Cyclone Tracy demolished Darwin, on Christmas Day in 1974. One of the most significant natural disasters in Australian history. The Cyclone wiped out most of the town, and it seems no-one was expecting it. Tracy destroyed more than 70% of Darwin’s buildings, and 80% of houses. She left more than 41,000 out of the 47,000 inhabitants of the city homeless, and required the evacuation of over 30,000 people. There was a “State of Emergency” type Military Administration Committee quickly put in place by the Whitlam Government, headed by Major General Alan Stretton. In an estate I purchased, were 10 covers which were mailed to Townsville from Darwin in the period immediately after the Cyclone, when regular mail services were finally established. The recipient added handwritten notes to the backs of some, soon after receipt. Sender was Neville Barwick, the Commonwealth Architect sent to Darwin to supervise the rebuilding. Barwick was Chairman of the Federal Government Department of Housing and Construction for Darwin, as outlined on one of the many press clippings inside. Barwick signed the envelope sealing flaps of 2 x OHMS covers.

Wiped out 80% of houses.

Error date on OHMS mail.

There were 4 x large long OHMS envelopes with “14-II-75” franking that was a meter setting in error for 14-1-75 the recipient says, and the newspaper clippings inside each backed that up. Then 6 x small envelopes were all to Townsville, many also with press clippings, and all of these are UNFRANKED, as “Free Mail” cancelled “PAID” was approved for those there, for a time. In 35 years as a dealer I have never owned ONE of these covers Newspaper tells the story.

Glen Stephens - tinyurl.com/Tracy74 A terribly tragedy, and the stamps and covers remind us of such events in our history, which is why many of us enjoy this hobby so much. Let us remember those who perished, and moved out forever.

USA $2 “Jennies” still hot.

Post Tracy mail was Free mailed in the immediate aftermath, much less TEN of them!

Remember when stamps cost 60¢?!

Australia Post issued a 60¢ stamp to mark this tragedy only last year - remember 2013 - when a letter cost only 60¢ to mail, and not 70¢! Real mail sent soon after Cyclone Tracy would make a wonderful exhibit by someone, and locating relevant material would be a lot harder than you’d imagine, I feel sure. I sold them for about $10 each to a Sydney dealer - a ton more pix of all the cover details, and press clippings inside are here for anyone interested

A new find of the intentionally created upright variety of the USA $2 “Inverted Jenny” pane of 6 was discovered in Ohio in November. “Linn’s” detailed tally of the number of panes found now stands at only 20, which leaves 80 panes still waiting to be discovered.

Still on sale for $US12. Stamp News - 53

Market Matters U.S. Postal Service spokesman Mark Saunders told Linn’s the latest example reported to the USPS was purchased in Zanesville, Ohio. USPS issued the pane of six $2 stamps on September 22, 2013. Ten days later, the Postal Service revealed that just 100 panes of six showing the plane flying right side up, were randomly seeded into the entire print run of the normal stamps. The odds of purchasing one of the 100 panes printed with the intentional variety is estimated by Linn’s to be Totally secretive packaging. 1 in 19,000 - IF all panes sell.

Only 13 reported to USPS

Of the 13 of 20 panes reported to the USPS, counting the latest find, only 3 were discovered in mail order stock shipped from USPS. The balance were purchased at POs. All “error” sheets have a note inside the packaging urging you to contact a special “800” number and the Postmaster General mails you a Certificate that your sheet is genuine. Sam Malamud of Ideal Stamp and Coin has purchased at least 2 of the error sheets for $US25,000 each via his large “BUY” ads in “Linn’s Stamp News”. The actual scarce pane is not showing the “Inverted” plane, but the intentionally created “NonInverted Jenny” pane of six. These show the planes on the stamps flying correct side up. To re-cap, the USPS deliberately printed 100 of the sheets with the plane CORRECT way up. 54 - Stamp News

80 Error packs left

They sealed up the sheets in all manner of secretive packaging, so that one simply cannot tell from outside, the stamp orientation. One of the packs I busted open is shown in photo nearby. Secretive lined envelope, printed on outside, heavy piece cardboard, white card insert and all in heat sealed cello. I bought a few cartons of 100 packs for fun as a client “Scratch Lotto” ticket basically, to sell at less than USPS cost when mailing orders. Unlike a worthless scratchie - if you “lose” on this lottery, you still have $US12 of USA stamps, valid for use forever! I am sending blocks of 6 to USA suppliers, and asking they glue-stick them down on Express Parcels to me. They sell readily. 4 x $12 Jenny panes is $48, and that is around what a medium Express Mail carton costs these days to Australia, and I buy many of those.

Glen Stephens

or so back for $US55,000, and had been asking $US60,000. Some nutter cut up a pane with a blunt cheese knife it looked like, mangled it, and hopefully took a bath on it, for being such an amateur. Others have been offered on eBay (good luck with that idea!) and also via real stamp auctions. To very varied results. If 100 had turned up in the market, a price of $10,000 or so would appear top end. However, as after a year plus, only some 20 are recorded, the equation changes greatly. At some point the USPS I assume recalls the issue and destroys it, and with it, the 80 or so “error” panes, and THEN the fun will really begin.

Near “FREE” Global postage.

Had 4 x $12 Jenny sheetlets, 6 singles, the new Jimi Hendrix ‘Forever’ stamp, and a $US19.95 Grand Central Station - the highest face value postage stamp ever issued by the USA. All paying the exact ‘signed for’ air rate for the large box. An Adelaide client loved it, and a few other panes used to me on correctly paid Registered envelopes etc. In years to come he’ll be delighted. The market price for the complete panes of 6 of the 100 possible “Error” sheets has yet to be firmly established. Linns reports New York dealer Henry Gitner sold one pane a month The NORMAL issued stamp. Stamp News - 55

Market Matters Beware Certs on eBay

Stamps accompanied by leading Expert Committee Certificates sell for far more money than without, and of course, so they certainly SHOULD. However on places like eBay, where you have no idea of the seller background most times, a vast dollop of scepticism needs to be employed, or you can lose your money. GUARANTEED. The RPS in London alerted me this week to the Certificate shown nearby offered on eBay. Totally fake, and it was never issued by the RPS they advised me. The eBay seller presumably knew this, but offered it as genuine with RPSL Certificate, and the clueless eBay Bunnies as usual bid madly on it. eBay Seller was Adelaide based echobangla (name now changed) who appears to be a crook, and a link to full discussion is - tinyurl.com/FakeStamp the ‘Certificate’ is of course a total and amateur fake. Birdie Envelope fetches $A2,316 56 - Stamp News

Never underestimate the value of something philatelic if a BIRD image is a central part of the design. Demand is often huge.

Glen Stephens Covers to the KINGS!

Sir Edward Bacon RPSL Certificate. The pretty advertising envelope shown nearby was auctioned by Prestige Melbourne on November 14, and was invoiced for $A2,316. As you can see it was a business type PTPO window faced stamped envelope, from the large Rosella sauce/bottling company, with the then current 1914 1d Red KGV head franking. These exist in both the window face shown and plain types, and come in both Die and Die 2 of the 1d KGV. These envelopes of course are not common, but nor are they rare – they achieve steep prices way above things of similar scarcity - due to the BIRD design. Prices are generally well under 4 figures, but this one must have had 2 or more VERY keen bidders, pushing the price up to what a superb mint £1 brown and Blue Kangaroo stamp fetches.

Most readers will be aware that King George V was a FANATICAL stamp collector. Less so his son “Bertie” - better known to most of us as King George VI. KGV told his stamp curator - “I wish to have THE best stamp collection, and not ONE of the best collections in England”. He succeeded. It seems true that KGV set aside a few hours most days to devote to the hobby. Locked in “The Stamp Room” at St James Palace, with trusted curator Sir Edward Bacon - no matter what was occurring in his Empire. Indeed the Prime Minister etc visiting the Palace in the midst of the carnage of WWI, to update the King on the latest massacres on The Somme etc, needed to wait until his stamp activities were dispensed with. His official biographer Harold Nicolson, despaired of George’s time as Duke of York, writing: “He may have been fine as a young midshipman, and a wise old King, but when he was Duke of York - he did nothing at all except shoot animals, and stick in stamps.” Sir Edward Bacon was Curator for basically all of the long KGV reign. In 1917 Bacon was made a Member of the Royal Victorian Order, then Commander in 1922, and Knighted in 1932 for his philatelic service. Bacon was President of the RPS London, and the nearby WW1 Certificate shows him telling Gibbons their Heligoland stamp had a fake cancel! The KGV stamp collection is immense, and housed in large RED, numbered, Buckram Leather albums. The KGVI reign stamps are in similar BLUE albums, and the QE2 era Collection are in GREEN.

On one row, not even the lowest one, I can see numbered volumes up to 222, so my guess is we are talking over 300 Red albums alone. KGVI did not appear to have much interest in stamps, and my feeling is that QE2 has more connection with them. She is shown nearby inspecting the Crown Agents artwork for her 2002 “Golden Jubilee” issue. Getting back to my trail of thought here, the cover shown nearby with the Imprint blocks 4 of the 1935 Australia interested me when I first saw it. Addressed to KGV. A dealer stamp friend of mine bought it for a very modest sum from an experienced UK dealer’s website, paying far less than the stamps were worth soaked OFF cover! as postmark ink ran into some of the perf holes. And the gold and black raised print crown emblem on seal appeared to be from Government House, Canberra. Anyway, onto eBay it went in late November, and ends up costing someone about $A850. HOW a cover addressed to the fanatical stamp collecting King got into public hands, is anyone’s guess. This kind of thing does sneak out now and again, that is for certain. The KGVI one shown nearby

said no, but pointed out the KGVI 1937 cover I had sold last year for $A150, and suggested he use that as a rough price guide, his having better stamp content of course. This friend trades on eBay as “1915cazna” - he is a WW1 tragic, and cazna is ANZAC spelt backwards, and 1915 was of course the Gallipoli landing. The KGV one likely was sent under outer cover. Why? No wear evident, no backstamps evident, never opened, and has the 2 colour raised crest. Probably Government House was sender, so they make their own rules generally! Also as Registration fee was only 3d, it would have been sent Registered is my guess, as it was WAY overpaid. In such cases some kind of autopen type note was generally sent by an underling, saying “The King commands me to thank you for your kind gesture ............ “ etc.

The Ebola Virus is of course a major health concern this year. It is a very serious matter in some West African countries including Liberia, where 1000s have died in the past 6 months from it. Eve. We want to then drive though Albania - a strange little place that was in a North Korean type wacko communist time-warp for decades, and is now just emerging. Then to Serbia, and back home via German and Thailand. “Thank You” to all readers for the many phone calls and emails with comments - for AND against what has been written here! “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”, to one and all. Be safe - and enjoy the break!

WORLDWIDE NEW ISSUES

Ascension Island - The Rosetta Mission Ascension Island sends its congratulations to the ESA and all involved in the Rosetta Mission. Comets have inspired awe and wonder since the dawn of history. Many scientists today believe that comets crashed into Earth in its formative period spewing organic molecules that were crucial to the growth of life. Comets may have formed about the same time as the giant planets of our solar system (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) - about 4.6 billion years ago. Some scientists think that comets and planets were both made from the same clumps of dust and ice that spewed from our Sun’s birth; others think that these roving time capsules are even older than that, and that they may contain grains of interstellar stuff that is even older than our solar system! Rosetta is a robotic space probe launched by the European Space Agency (ESA). Along with its lander module, Philae, Rosetta’s ten-year mission was to catch the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P) and to answer some of our questions about comets. The Rosetta spacecraft is named after the ancient Rosetta Stone that you can visit in London’s British Museum. The Philae lander is named after the Philae Obelisk which, together with the Rosetta Stone, provided the key to our first understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Scientists hope that the Rosetta spacecraft will enable us to translate the even older language of comets, as expressed by their thermal signatures, into new knowledge about the origins of our solar system and, perhaps, life on Earth. This daring international mission is spearheaded by the ESA with key support and instruments from NASA. Rosetta was launched aboard an Ariane 5 space rocket on 2 March 2004 from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana. Rosetta’s Ariane 5 soon passed out of range of the Galliot tracking station, near Kourou, and was followed in its journey around the world by tracking stations in Brazil, Ascension Island (shown on the souvenir sheet), Kenya, Australia and Hawaii. In order to know what to expect on the day, all these places had rehearsed the launch during the preceding months. The launch of Rosetta was a particular challenge as it was the first time Ariane 5 had placed a spacecraft onto an Earthescape trajectory. To do this, an unprecedented delayed ignition of the Ariane 5 upper stage was needed. 106 minutes after

Rosetta had been placed into space the upper stage ignited and powered Rosetta away from the Earth towards its icy rendezvous. Despite the hundreds of millions of kilometres that Rosetta would eventually travel 99.8% of the propellant needed for the mission was consumed during the first hundred kilometres as the rocket struggled to slice a path through the atmosphere and escape Earth’s gravity. To achieve the required velocity to rendezvous with 67P, Rosetta used gravity assist manoeuvres to accelerate throughout the inner Solar System. The first flyby of Earth occurred on 4 March 2005. On 25 February 2007, the craft was scheduled for a low-altitude bypass of Mars (during which Rosetta returned detailed images of the surface and atmosphere of the planet). The second Earth flyby occurred on 13 November 2007. Rosetta ‘s third and final flyby of Earth happened on 12 November 2009. In August 2014, Rosetta rendezvoused with the comet 67P, after a journey of some 6.4 billion kilometres through the solar system, and entered actual orbit about it in September. The surface layout of 67P was unknown before Rosetta ‘s arrival. The orbiter mapped the comet in anticipation of detaching its lander and five potential landing sites were identified before the ESA announced Site J, named Agilkia, as the lander’s destination. On 12 November 2014, 510 million kilometres from earth, Philae detached from Rosetta and approached 67P at a relative speed of around 1 m/s (2.2 mph). It bounced twice, but Philae’s soft landing on the comet was the first time in history that such an extraordinary feat has been achieved. Confirmation of contact with 67P reached Earth at 16:03 GMT. After landing on the comet Philae commenced its science missions. “After more than 10 years travelling through space, we’re now making the best ever scientific analysis of one of the oldest remnants of our Solar System,” said Alvaro Giménez, ESA’s Director of Science and Robotic Exploration. “Decades of preparation have paved the way for today’s success, ensuring that Rosetta continues to be a game-changer in cometary science and space exploration.” Although the future of the lander Philae is uncertain, Rosetta is the workhorse of the mission and its work will continue as it escorts the comet around the sun.
