TOURIST The lovely coastal town of Victor Harbor, on the Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia, hosts the Horse-Drawn Tram, a service first established in 1894. Each of the four trams is hauled by one of a team of eight Clydesdale horses along a 630-metre viaduct or pier. Queensland’s spectacular Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef can be viewed from the air in popular seaplane tours conducted by Air Whitsunday. For many years, the early 20th-century steam train, Puffing Billy, has been one of Victoria’s favourite attractions. The iconic engine runs on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the temperate forests of the Dandenong Ranges, just outside Melbourne.

Get On Board! Visitors flocking to some of Australia’s most beautiful destinations can board a range of transport vehicles for sightseeing tours.

Editor’s Mailbag some time before the bank amalgamated with another when he resigned/became redundant and then resorted to a combination of other enterprises using his not inconsiderable talents. In the Yass community and more widely in specialised fields, he is known for many artworks, landscape and historical photographs of the region, geological Dear Editor discoveries, and not In least for his wide partnership with another philatelic interests. We have Yass community discovered, but historian, I am never actually seen researching the any examples, that life of Alfred James Shearsby produced Shearsby, (1872 – 1962) who was quite first-day-covers for a number of Australian a prominent citizen stamp issues. of the town of Yass Unfortunately, for many years. we do not know for A. J. Shearsby which issues he did came to Yass after joining the Australian this, but suspect that they were probably Joint Stock Bank issues from the early possibly about the to mid 20th Century turn of the 20th rather than from century. He worked in the bank for quite the 19th Century.

It is recorded that he submitted an un-successful design for a stamp commemorating the establishment of the national capital, and we have approached Australia Post for details of that issue. However, we are writing to you in the hope that you might be willing to publicise our quest for other information and illustrations regarding Shearsby’s philatelic interests amongst your readers. We seek good quality scans or high resolution photographs of any of his first-daycover designs that collectors might have in their collections and may be willing to share with us for publication. Knowing that collectors may wish to keep their holdings confidential, we would also welcome anonymous

submissions, which could be acknowledged collectively through your publication (if that is what owners of the material preferred). We are quite prepared to pay all costs that might be involved. Our aim is to publish an interesting book about this fascinating character and of course we will make the chapter on his philatelic interests available to your magazine on its completion. New Åland stamps Debated Carl Larsson painting

On 10 April, the 2015 Sepac stamp on a culture theme will be issued. Åland Post shows one of painter Carl Larsson’s most controversial and known paintings, Midvinterblot (‘Blót’). The painting in the stamp, however, is a parallel work of art which is in the possession of Åland businessman Anders Wiklöf. The smaller Midvinterblot was painted parallelly and - unlike its gigantic double –it was signed. The painting went under the hammer for SEK 3.2m at an auction in Stockholm in 2002 and is now included in Anders Wiklöf’s private collection at Andersudde.

Carl Larsson (1853-1919) is one of the most popular and well-known painters in Sweden. Midvinterblot shows another, more dramatic side to Carl Larsson. His source of inspiration was the skaldic poem Ynglingatal, dated to the early 900s. The painting depicts how Swedish king Domalde lets himself be sacrificed in order to avert years of famine. Measuring 6.4 x 13.6 m (90 m²), the monumental painting is now on display in the hall of the central staircase in Swedish National Museum of Fine Arts in Stockholm, but the road there was not uncomplicated. From first sketch to final version of the painting, Larsson had to fight the conser-vative establishment as well as his own more left-wing artist friends. The critics considered the painting to be unpalatable, historically incorrect and, finally, even outmoded. It was ultimately rejected by the Nationalmuseum in 1916 and has changed owners several times. Since 1992, the painting hangs in National-museum as originally intended, obtained from a Japanese private collection. Date of issue 10 April 2015 continued on Page 29

WORLDWIDE NEW ISSUES

Victoria Cross Legends honoured on postage stamps Five of Australia’s most gallant and decorated soldiers have been immortalised on postage stamps as the recipients of the 2015 Australia Post Legends Award. This year’s Legends Award recognises five Australians who have received the Victoria Cross, the highest honour that can be bestowed for acts of valour “in the presence of the enemy”. The 2015 Australia Post Legends Award recipients are Keith Payne VC OAM, Mark Donaldson VC, Ben Roberts-Smith VC MG, Daniel Keighran VC and, for the first time in the Awards history, Legends status will be awarded posthumously to Cameron Baird VC MG. Corporal Baird was the 100th Australian to receive a Victoria Cross since the award was first created by Queen Victoria in 1856. Ahmed Fahour, Managing Director & CEO, Australia Post, said this year’s award honours five Australians who have demonstrated courage, commitment and the ultimate display of mateship. “These five men when faced with dangerous situations in their line of duty were selfless, devoted to their cause

and committed to keeping their mates safe, for which sadly Corporal Baird paid the ultimate price,” Mr Fahour said. “This year’s Legends Award recipients could not be more inspirational, particularly as we commemorate the ANZAC centenary and more than a century of service by Australian servicemen and women. It is our absolute honour to bestow this Award upon them,” Mr Fahour continued. For the first time, Australia Post will donate $1 to Legacy from selected products purchased from the Legends range. As one of Australia’s most iconic charities, Legacy grew out of the ashes of the Great War and 90 years on still supports around 90,000 families of Defence personnel who have given their lives or their health for their country. These families rely on Legacy for emotional and financial support in the aftermath of devastating circumstances. The 2015 Australia Post Australian Legends will be honoured at official Australia Day Council events hosted in all capital cities, with the first luncheon taking place in Melbourne today. Each Legend

will also be presented with a 24-carat gold replica of their stamp.

Ben Roberts-Smith VC MG who was awarded

the Victoria Cross for brave actions carried out during a mission in Tizak, Afghanistan in June 2010, said: “It is bit surreal but very humbling; you don’t join the Army with grand ideas of recognition and you certainly don’t anticipate that your image will one day appear on a postage stamp! My hope is that in some way, this stamp series will contribute to raising awareness of the fact there are enduring sacrifices being made by Australian soldiers and their families every day. This should never be forgotten and if Legacy and the support they provide our servicemen and women and their families will benefit from this Australia Post Legends series then I am honoured to participate and to offer my total support.”

Mark Donaldson VC

who was awarded the Victoria Cross for rescuing an injured interpreter while under heavy fire in Uruzgan province, Afghanistan, September 2008, said: “When I was younger I never could have imagined my face being on a stamp. But if my image on a stamp fosters thoughts of positivity, if it helps someone going through a rough time to give them some strength

to be a better person, if it can reach that level then I think that’s an amazing thing. This is not just about me, it’s about my family, my friends, my mates back in my unit and their friends and families back home waiting too – but I’m thankful for the opportunity to be a part of it.”

Daniel Keighran VC

who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his act of bravery during a three-hour firefight with insurgents at the Battle of Derapet in Afghanistan, August 2010, said: “It took me a little while to accept that this was really happening, I was extremely surprised and honoured. I think it’s good for people to hear the stories again. To be reminded of what some of the guys are committed to doing in the Australian Defence Force, what they have to give up, and what they’re willing to do for their mates – that’s a big part of who we are as Australians.”

Keith Payne VC OAM

who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallant effort recovering injured troops while under heavy fire in Kon Tum Province, South Vietnam in 1969, said: “I think it’s great of Australia Post to recognise not only me, but the younger blokes. That’s the important part, to remind the younger generation that our service people are still there and they are doing a damn fine job.” The Legends Award criteria honours living Australians who have made a unique Stamp News - 9

WORLDWIDE NEW ISSUES contribution to our way of life, inspired the community and influenced the way Australians think about themselves and their country. The Legends Award was initiated in 1997 when Sir Donald Bradman was the first living Australian to be honoured on an Australian stamp. Prior to that, the only living people honoured on our nation’s stamps were members of the royal family. The 2015 Legends will feature on a 70c stamp, with all Legends featuring in a stamp pack, minisheet, first day cover and set of maxi cards.

By purchasing selected Legends products Australia Post is also offering a chance for two mates to visit the hallowed ground of Gallipoli. Simply register online including receipt number at auspost. com.au/gallipoli. The competition starts at 9am AEDST 22 January 2015 and ends at 5pm AEST 10 May 2015. Cinderella Corner

The Future Of Cinderella Corner.

After considerable thought I have decided that I can no longer continue to produce this column on a regular basis. And at the end of this year I will bring the column to an end. If there is someone out there who is prepared to pick up the reins, then so much the better, but after 15 years and many other philatelic calls on my time I usually find myself rushing to complete a column in the last few days before the deadline or struggling to find enough material to complete a column. So, readers you are on notice that the column will cease as of December 2015 unless there is someone prepared to take over from me.

Suez Canal.

The illustrations of these stamps in the February

column were to put it bluntly, lousy, not the fault of the printer or editor, it was my fault, I have rescanned them and illustrated them here as Fig. 10 (original Fig. 2) and 11 (original Fig. 3).

Province Of Bumbunga

The Province of Bumbunga was proclaimed by Alex Brackstone over his property at Bumbunga near Snowtown in the mid north of South Australia in 1976. Bumbunga has suffered the fate of many small towns in South Australia, the withdrawal of banking services, the closure of the post office, the removal of the railway station, in this instance the junction of a short branch line to Lochiel, followed by other small businesses until the town becomes little more than a ghost town. (I may incur the wrath of the

locals for such a comment!) Bumbunga today exists only in the name of a large salt lake and a hill nearby and the name of the township has disappeared from most maps. The founding of the Province was not for the same reason that other “independent” states in Australia were founded though. Bumbunga was founded by a man who was concerned over the growth of the republican movement and the possible loss of the monarchy to Australia and it was his intention to create an enclave loyal to the British throne in Australia. Stamps were first issued on 14 November 1980 with a set of 4 values commemorating Prince Charles’ birthday. A further set appeared on 19 February 1981 for Prince Andrew’s 21st birthday. The Royal wedding of Prince Charles to Lady

Diana Spencer followed later in 1981 and on March 29th 1982 the 6th anniversary of the founding of the Province was commemorated with a set of 4 stamps. The Prince Andrew 21st birthday set was overprinted to commemorate the Falklands Victory and issued on 1 July 1982 along with a set for the 21st birthday of the Princess of Wales. 1983 saw the issue of a set to celebrate the birth of Prince William and them on Prince Charles’ birthday a sheet of 24 with the story of the Old Man of Lochnagar, a story written by Prince Charles. World Legacy for the New Generation stamp issue appeared in 1984 and on 1 December 1984 a Christmas issue appeared. In 1985 a set was issued for the Australian Grand Prix and the last issue I have recorded was the Royal Visit of Queen Elizabeth II on March 9th 1986.

A full listing of stamps issued was included as an advertisement in Cinderellas Australasia and this is where I have extracted the above listings from. I am not aware of any later issues, but if I have missed any I am sure someone will tell me.

Local Government Elections. (Fig. 1).

This label, was used in late 2006 in the lead up to the Local Government elections in South Australia, but from the Council correspondence I have seen, not all councils used it. I have seen similar labels used in other States as well.

Re-Po Advertising. (Fig. 2)

This label comes from the 1950s I think. I

remember the Re-Po bottle being around in my father’s shed at one time or another, it was certainly used on the car, however I don’t recall the polish being used on the furniture in the house.

Careful Crossing Campaign. (Fig. 3).

This is a relatively early label used by the Victorian Railways to warn of the dangers of fast trains and unwary or careless car drivers. It appears to date from the late 1920s or early 1930s and I seem to recall seeing a similar label from New Zealand.

Ssicc. (Fig. 4).

I wrote about this stamp back in 2007, but did not get any response so here it is again. The South

Sea Islands Correspondence Club is a bit of a mystery to me and it appears that this label has not been recorded before. Does any reader have any information about this club?

Australian Made. (Fig. 5).

There have been various labels advertising the Buy Australian Made campaign over the years, but this is the first time I have seen this one. It appears to date from the 1950s again, but that is as far as I can go with information. Can any reader add to this?

Trading Stamps. Fig. 6, 7 And 8).

Peter Simpfendorfer sent these to me some time ago and the bonus with it is that one of them is dated, most unusual for a Cinderella item. Usually

there is no indication at all and we have to make an educated guess which at times is wildly off the mark. These trading stamps are from Matthews Brothers at Bendigo and we have the date of 26 March 1958 all over them, what luck! The others are Sydney Gold Star Coupon Co., Retailers Efficient Discounts and Ashfield Shoppers Coupon, probably from the same period.

CA Overprints. (Fig. 9).

Stamps with this overprint appeared back in about 1982 in an article written in this magazine by Bill Hornadge. He had been shown the stamps by Kevin Duffy. There were five stamps illustrated, two Western Australian stamps and three Victorian stamps, all low values and mint.

Charkari State, Central India Charkhari was a feudatory state in the northern part of Central India. Its ruler was honoured with an 11-gun salute. The state has a history going back to 1765. Charkhari State had an area of 880 square miles and the 1931 census revealed that it had a population of some 120,000 people. The state comprised one town and more than 500 villages. The state’s economy was based on agriculture producing wheat, cotton and other crops. Diamonds have also been mined in the area but that activity was never particularly profitable. Today Charkhari Town has a population of 20,000 people. The last reigning maharaja of Charkhari was

16 - Stamp News

Jalendra Singh who had to turn over his state to the new Indian state of Vindhya Pradesh in 1948. However, it was Maharaja Malkhan Singh who authorised the issue of Charkari’s first set of stamps in 1884. The four very simple designs were released imperforate and without gum. The 1, 2 and 4 annas values had the currency unit in the plural form. Charkhari’s first issue is extremely rare today. The same basic design was reused for new issues in 1897 and 1902. This time the plural –s was not used for the higher anna values. It seems that the Indian nobility had a very strong penchant for knives, daggers and swords. The

Christer Brunström first three issues depicted a sword. In 1909 a new set of stamps was issued and this time printed by lithography in Calcutta. The stamps feature crossed swords with the right-hand sword over the left. The basic set has eight denominations from 1 pice to 1 rupee but there are numerous colour shades and perforation varieties. Circa 1919, there were new printings of the 1 pice, ½ anna and 1 anna stamps with very slight changes in the design. In 1912, 1917 and 1921 there were provisional handstamped stamps. They were obviously produced in connection with urgent need for 1 pice and 1 anna

stamps. The 1919 design returned in the 1930-1945 period. The stamps were printed locally by the State Printing Press in Charkhari. As the printing company apparently was unable to perforate the stamps they were left imperforate. There are numerous varieties in this issue. In 1931, Charkhari released a set of nine pictorial stamps printed by Batliboi Litho Works in Bombay. Most values exist with three different perforations. The rupee values were printed in two colours which of course resulted in some exciting varieties. The 3-rupee stamp exists with the central image missing

Stamp News - 17

,

Charkari State, Central India and the 5-rupee value can be found with inverted centre. Some denominations exist fully or partly imperforate. The stamps have interesting designs featuring scenery and buildings in Charkhari. Sadly the printing quality is not the very best but the stamps still provide a glimpse of this once princely state of India. There was a lot of speculation involved in this issue. The Post Office sold large quantities of the stamps in cancelled to order condition. Such a set can still easily be had for a dollar or two. The mint stamps were also sold at less than face value to the stamp trade. The 1931 set had been authorised by the state authorities but it was withdrawn when all the

18 - Stamp News

irregularities became known. The crossed swords issue continued to be used until Charkhari’s stamps were replaced by those of India. In 1939 and 1940 there were three provisional stamps with new denominations overprinted on older stamps. Some of these are extremely scarce today. As many of Charkhari’s stamps are rather primitive productions it comes as no surprise that forgers have been busily at work printing their own versions of the state’s stamps. Thus collectors of Charkhari need to be careful when adding new stamps to their albums. Despite these problems, Charkhari is still a very handy area to collect.

Stamps in the News - Globally! The 1-Cent Stamp that changed the course of history Reported at www.communitynewspapers.com

Nicaraguan officials and a Chinese company recently announced that they have broken ground on the $50 billion transoceanic waterway that they predict will rival the Panama Canal. Historians offer Nicaragua advice – don’t print any more stamps or coins showing the previous historical beauty of the nation, as the Chinese company may change its mind. A previous Nicaragua 1-cent stamp changed the fate of two nations and the most important construction project in world history. In the 1870s, a French company began construction of a canal in the Panama region of Columbia. Yellow fever and errors brought the entire French project into bankruptcy. In 1901, newly installed President Theodore Roosevelt now wanted an American canal as it meant “international power with rapid deployment of the fleet.” To Senate Leader Mark Hanna, “The canal meant America becoming a commercial world power with our products in shorter shipping distance from both coasts.” Although longer, Nicaragua, with a better climate and terrain, was the favoured route and all the millions invested in the French project were to be lost forever. The American Canal Commission, Senate and Congress declared Nicaragua the approved route.

20 - Stamp News

The two key players in this saga were BunauVarilla, a French entrepreneur, who came to America to promote the sale of the French rights to the Panama Canal, and William Nelson Cromwell, an influential New York attorney. Bunau-Varilla and Cromwell “approached Hanna to promote the Panama route.” Fate now took over. Bunau-Varilla had pointed out the danger of a possible volcanic eruption in Nicaragua. Nicaragua had chosen a volcano, Mt. Monotombo depicted in full eruption, on its 1- cent stamp to characterize the beauty of the country. “Eight days later, on the eve of the final Senate debate for approval of the Nicaraguan route, Mt. Monotombo in Nicaragua erupted.” Bunau-Varilla called every local stamp dealer. He then mounted 90 such stamps, one for each Senator, with the added words, “An official witness of the volcanic activity of Nicaragua.” That was all Hanna needed. On June 25, 1902, Congress approved the Panama route.

Canada waves the flag

Reported at www.canadapost.ca At noon on February 15, 1965, Canada’s new flag was raised on Parliament Hill as a symbol representing all Canadian citizens. To celebrate the 50th anniversary Canada Post has issued a $5 fabric stamp – a first for Canada. Designer Kosta Tsetsekas explains that the biggest challenge in creating the fabric stamp was applying ink to the satin rayon. A battery of tests helped him understand more about the interaction between ink and fabric to achieve consistent results in the production of such an innovative stamp. “There’s a reason we normally print on smooth paper – it’s because ink behaves much more predictably,” says Tsetsekas. “It was interesting to see how metallic inks lost much of their lustre, while some non-metallic ones actually began to look metallic on the fabric.” He is proud of his achievement. “Designing stamps for the 50th anniversary of our flag is as good as it gets for any Canadian.” One other Canadian shares his proud

A set of stamps featuring Vietnam’s symbolic architectural heritage and landscapes was unveiled in Paris, France, in February. The stamps highlight Hanoi’s Opera House, the Truong Tien Bridge in Hue, and the Nha Rong wharf in Ho Chi Minh City.

Of the 14,040 stamps issued, 1,000 will be applied to letters inviting Vietnamese and French representatives to attend a Lunar New Year celebration to be held by the Vietnamese Embassy. The stamp set’s release was organised through cooperation between France’s national postal service La Poste and the Vietnam Post Corporation. Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Ngoc Son said the stamps demonstrate a shared history between the two nations through images of French-style architectural structures.

A special New Zealand Post stamp to mark the 175th anniversary of the Treaty of Waitangi has been issued this February. The over-sized commemorative stamp (40x50mm) is a blend of the old and the new, and combines a coin design by New Zealander James Berry (adapted by British artist Percy Metcalfe) with contemporary Maori design by Roy MacDougall and Rangi Kipa, supported by Toi Maori Aotearoa. New Zealand Post spokesman said the central aspect of the stamp design depicts the figures of Tamati Waka Nene and William Hobson, and is based on the Waitangi Crown – a coin minted in 1935. “It is the first time since 1990 that New Zealand Post has issued a Treaty of Waitangi stamp and it marks a significant milestone. “Though the Waitangi Crown coin was not technically a commemorative Stamp News - 21

This coin was struck after the New Zealand Numismatic Society approached the government suggesting a new coin marking the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. “The stamp depicts Ngapuhi chief Tamati Waka Nene shaking hands with William Hobson, the first governor of New Zealand, and the design is supported by the descendants of Tamati Waka Nene.” The two are set against a backdrop of sculptural designs based on two Northland designs of Unahi (fish scale) and Kiri Kiore (Pacific rat pelt).

The UK’s Royal Mail service is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with a set of postage stamps depicting scenes from the book. An updated take on the story is presented in a series of 10 individual stamps by award-winning illustrator Grahame Baker-Smith, with the updated images of Alice based on his daughter. The White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat and other famous images are also part of the collection. Popularly known as Alice in Wonderland, the original story was conceived in 1862 by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a teacher at Christ Church in Oxford, to entertain children on a boat trip. Three years later, the story was published under Dodgson’s pseudonym, Lewis Carroll. In addition to the stamps, the British mail service also collaborated with children’s book publisher Walker Books to create a threedimensional gift edition book based on the stamp artwork.

The 2015 Australia Post Legends Award recipients are Keith Payne VC OAM, Mark Donaldson VC, Ben Roberts-Smith VC MG, Daniel Keighran VC and, for the first time in the awards’ history, Legends status will be awarded posthumously to Cameron Baird VC MG. Australia Post managing director and CEO Ahmed Fahour said this year’s award honours five Australians who had demonstrated courage,

Daniel Keighran was awarded the Victoria Cross for his act of bravery during a three-hour firefight with insurgents at the Battle of Derapet in Afghanistan in August 2010. “I was extremely surprised and honoured. In February, Isle of Man Post Office issued a stamp marking the 175th Anniversary of the penny black and the birth of Stanley Gibbons. The issue was produced in collaboration with Stanley Gibbons. Postage rates on the Isle of Man and the rest of the British Isles had risen to a very high level by 1830 resulting in a campaign led by Roland Hill aimed at lowering the rate to one penny per half ounce. This was a success and the penny rate was introduced January 10, 1840. At first the postage

paid or due was written in ink on the letter by the postmaster and then on May 6, 1840 a new method of paying postage was introduced and the famous penny black was born, followed by the twopenny blue on May 8, 1840. A number of devices were incorporated in the designs to prevent forgery including stamps being printed by the recess method, paper specifically made with a small watermark on each stamp, a machine used to make intricate background patterns, and the use of unique corner letters with each stamp on the printing plate of 240 stamps having a different combination of corner letters. The penny black and twopenny blue were resounding successes. The 1840 stamps were found to be easily cleaned of the red cancellation and reused and this prompted a colour change to red for the penny black stamp with new stamps issued in 1841. Six stamps have been produced and include depiction of the penny black, the penny red which replaced the black and the twopenny blue. In addition, there are three stamps each with a

key individual - William Mulready, Roland Hill and Edward Stanley Gibbons whose portraits are featured on the stamps next to their associated contribution. Edward Stanley Gibbons was born on June 21, 1840, interestingly in the same year that Britain issued the penny black. Gibbons interest in stamps began whilst at school and he started the business Stanley Gibbons Ltd when employed as an assistant in his father’s pharmacy shop in Plymouth where he set up a counter selling stamps in 1856. Stanley Gibbons is the world’s oldest rare stamp merchant and was granted the Royal Warrant in 1914. The company continues to serve collectors, philatelists and numismatists all over the world, host auctions and publish philatelic journals.

Calypso rules in Trinidad & Tobago Reported at www.trinidadexpress.com

To commemorate 100 years since the first calypso recording, The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation (TUCO) and TTPOST have combined to launch a special stamp issue. Calypso is a style of Afro-Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the early to mid-20th century. Its rhythms can be traced back to West Africa and the arrival of French planters and their slaves from the French Antilles in the 1700s. Calypso drew upon African and French influences, and became the voice of the people. It was characterized by highly rhythmic and harmonic vocals, which was most often sung in a French creole and led by a lead singer eventually known as a calypsonian.

Some of the calypsonians featured on the stamps include Roaring Lion, Lord Kitchener, Calypso Rose and Sparrow. President of Tuco, Lutalo Masimba, better known as Brother Resistance, said it was important to commemorate and preserve the history of the calypso art form. He said through calypso many stories were told and it was important to continue the expression.

Hard to catch Peach-leaved bellflower on stamp

On 10 April, Peach-leaved bellflower will appear on an Åland stamp. Wild life photographer Andy Horner shot the photo of this adorable meadow flower which is much easier to spot than to photograph. He spotted the flower alongside the cycle path some 100 metres from his home in Mariehamn, but shooting a photo of it proved difficult. “The human eye obviously perceives the special hue of the bellflower differently from the hue perceived by both digital sensor and traditional film, turning the colour slightly purple in the photo. Presumably, this particular shade of blue lies very close to the invisible ultraviolet colour of the spectrum”, Andy explains.

Peach-leaved bellflower (Campanula persicifolia) is the most common species of the eight different species of bellflower growing in Åland. It appears on road shoulders and meadows and in gardens in the beginning of July. Commemorating ANZAC

Part 10: Australian Legends 2000 From January 1997, Australia Post changed its policy of not depicting non-Royal living persons on Australian stamps and introduced an annual Legends issue featuring living Australians who had achieved remarkable stature in the community. In January 2000 the Legends issue honoured the last remaining three ex-servicemen who had served in the Gallipoli campaign. They were Alec Campbell (26 Feb 1899 – 16 May 2002); Roy Longmore (29 April 1894 – 21 June 2001) and Walter Parker (11 Aug 1894 – 22 Jan 2000). A fourth stamp showed the 1914–1915 Star medal which was awarded to all Australian servicemen who served in the campaigns of those years including the Gallipoli campaign.

Alec Campbell enlisted in his hometown of Launceston, Tasmania, aged only 16, lying about his age and claiming to be 18. He landed at Anzac Cove in early November 1915 where he served carrying ammunition, stores and water to the trenches. He received a minor wound in the fighting at Gallipoli and was evacuated in the general withdrawal of the Australian forces in December. He subsequently became ill with a fever which caused partial facial paralysis and was invalided home and discharged in August 1916 aged 17. In later years he had an active working life, served as a trade union official, married twice and fathered nine children. He was the last Gallipoli veteran to pass away. in a 1991 painting by Bryan Westwood hanging in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Roy Longmore (figures 4 & 5) was a farmhand in Geelong, Victoria before enlisting. At Gallipoli he was a tunnel digger, laying mines underneath Turkish positions. He later fought on the Western Front where he was wounded three times. On the last occasion, a short time before the November 1918 Armistice, he received multiple wounds from machine-gun fire. The after-effects of his wounds prevented him from returning to farm work and he became a taxi driver in Melbourne. Roy married and had a son. He was the second-last Gallipoli veteran to pass away. Walter Parker was born in Brookvale, a suburb of Sydney near Manly Beach. He was an apprentice commercial art printer in Sydney when he enlisted. In November 1915 he arrived at Gallipoli where he served carrying supplies to the front trenches. After evacuation from

Gallipoli, he fought in France until being shot in the arm at Pozieres after which he was invalided to England before returning to Australia. After the war he moved to Queensland, married and fathered a son and a daughter. His son died in World War II. Walter died on 22 January 2000, the day after the Legends stamps were issued. The stamps were lithograph printed by SNP Ausprint in sheets of 50 and in self-adhesive booklets of 10. The design of the booklet cover (figure 6) incorporated an image from the cover of The ANZAC Book published in London by Cassell in 1916 (figure 7). It was edited by CEW Bean and contained illustrations, poems and satirical and sombre written pieces all created by soldiers while they were at Gallipoli. The book’s cover design is attributed to William Otho Hewett of Bordertown, South Australia. A detail from the book cover was included in the gutter of the stamp sheets (figure 1). Australia Post’s “Limited Edition” Stamps Introduction

2014 is the 10th year of “Impressions” products. It all began in 2005. On 10th November that year Australia Post released a range of expensive “limited-edition” products. They called it their “Impressions” range and published a special catalogue showing all the “unique gifts and collectables” available. They have been doing it ever since. A lot of the products don’t even contain stamps. The details of 2005 to 2013 were summarised in Parts 1, 2, 3 & 4 in previous editions of Stamp News. Here is a summary of the 2014 “Impressions” releases that contained new mint Australian stamp variations. (I have excluded the Annual Mint and CTO Collections, Souvenir Stamp Sheets (SSS), transparent plastic stamps, stamp coins, products containing cancelled stamps and products that do not contain a new stamp variation.) The Annual Mint Collection came on sale on th 4 November 2014 for $109.95. It contained

a special ‘Concession Stamp 2014’ minisheet. This was the first release of these 2 stamps as a gummed se-tenant pair. They were originally released as self-adhesive stamps to ‘MyPOST’ Concession card holders on 24th March but were not valid for postage until 31st March. The stamps in the minisheet can be purchased and used by anyone – even ‘MyPOST’ Concession card holders who have already used their annual allocation of 50 Concession stamps. Revenue Review Victoria Cattle

Further findings from David Casey of Victoria, has yielded some key info on the Cattle overprints. David turned up a sheet of the $2 value [fig 1], which has finally given out its secrets of the ‘flat back C’. Firstly I have added a huge scan of this sheet at ozrevenues.com/pics/cat1.jpg for those of you who wish to study it much closer. Secondly we can now plate the ‘flat back C’ to stamp 1 rows 1 & 8. These are the center two in figure 2, with the top ‘CATTLE’ in figure 2 being the regular one. A much less defined ‘flat C’ can be found in positions, stamp 1 row’s 7 & 9. The only deformed ‘CATTLE’ sits at stamp 1 row 10, which is the lower ‘CATTLE’ in figure 2. A ghostly ‘E’ can be found in rows 4-6 stamp 10. Last but not least you can find a dropped ‘CATTLE’ [fig 3] sprinkled throughout the sheet.

Ok one more that shows up, is the base break in ‘C’ of VICTORIA which appears to be a ‘die’ flaw and can be found on every stamp. Thanks for sharing this with us David.

Cancelled

A rather nice £500 Queensland Impressed duty [fig 4] was recently auctioned selling for $180]. This stamp not only had the colourless impressed cancel from the Queensland Treasury, which were placed into presentation packs and sold to the public for £1, it also had the scarce violet ‘CANCELLED’. No records on this cancel can be found. I had the 63 from this set in pairs with this cancelled overprint on, so I’m assuming these may have been remainders of the remainders! Maybe you are reading this and can fill in the blanks?

Dave Elsmore Colour

Figure 5 is yet another colour variation to add to the ever-growing list of 1917 Victorian Railway ‘wing’ issues. Note this has the perf and rouletted at right. Please update your records to include this.

High Tax

Last year a scarce 1930’s bi-colour £1 Tax installment from Victoria was up for auction. This copy was the first to be recorded. Figure 6 now doubles the known copies recorded to have survived. Selling in auction for a tad over $100 I feel was cheap. I’m sure the under-bidders will be kicking themselves, as these beauties rarely turn up.

Perf x imperf

Figure 7, like figure 6, rarely turns up. The problem

with this issue is the fact many sheets were very poorly perfed and with figure 7 being a left margin copy. I doubt it is in fact a true imperf at right. Imperf margin copies are well recorded. If this was in a pair then there would be no doubt in my mind but….

Idiot

Alas, I spied figure 8 on eBay purporting to be an inverted specimen. You could argue, “well it is inverted”!! well, ok yes it is, but this was not applied by the State Government Printer but by a conman in his back shed! Beware of idiots selling forged material because if you buy it, you will end up being the idiot! I also noticed a few revenues being copied. These are easily picked as copies as they are without watermark. Issues being copied

Revenue Review that were issued on unwatermarked paper again are easily picked. Just put your eyeglass on them and you will see the poor copying. If in doubt, phone a friend or email me.

Roulettes

Last issue Tasmanian duty stamps were separated by two different rouletting machines. Figure 9 shows roulettes 6.75 & 4.5. Several values are found with both, which doubles the fun.

Wine

Peter Smith has sent me this unrecorded Australian Wine Producers Association revenue [fig 10] to add to my online listing of these beauties. I have listed the colour as ‘Grape-green’. Many thanks for sharing this Peter.

Fig 7

No Name

New Zealand railway charges stamps are not only well collected but also well documented 99.9% have a station name overprinted on them, so when items like figure 11 turn up without a station name you know there will be a collector blood bath to win such a cracker of an item. Of course the giveaway is the ‘Palmerston North/Parcels’ violet cancel. While I’m on New Zealand, figure 12 rarely turns up, so if you see one with any value within just buy it, it’s that simple, as you may be waiting a while before another comes along.

WWI Patriotic

A new addition to my free online catalogue is a priced listing of the World War One Patriotic Cinderella labels of Australia. I have added a link within my revenue catalogue page. Why Cinderella’s you may ask? Well probably because

Dave Elsmore they sort of go hand in hand with revenues, as most revenue collectors will swing both ways, and I personally felt the need for a good general listing that is consistent with todays trends. I am working on a WWII version of this, which should be out by the time you read this. When you find time to have a look you will note just a few black & white photocopies, which I have used due to the lack of availability or sourcing a colour scan. I am hoping you the reader, can assist me in filling in the colours! Figure 13 is the unissued Delandre proof label. It sits in an unissued proof sheet of many countries [see web page], and is yet to be split up. I have added the Delandre labels to the on line WWI patriotic book as they have an Australian connection, but was printed outside of Australia. These of course are at the tail end of the web page. If you have something I do not list or can improve on any of the black & white or blurry scans I would

love to hear from you.

Perfin Corner

The VOCo Perfin has been well documented and is one of the common patterns to find on postage stamps, but figure 12 is the very first to be recorded on a 1d revenue value. Vacuum Oil started operating in the United States in the 1860 and in 1895 became the first oil company to be established in Australia. Up until that time, foreign oil products were marketed in Australia via agents. Vacuum Oil first opened offices in Melbourne and were incorporated in 1904 which is the era figure 14 comes from.

“Desert Magic” Imported Stamp Drying books For those readers who have not seen these Desert Magic books, they are a large A4 sized book (stockbook sized) with thick white Spiro edge binding that as you can see allows them to lay flat. (There is a half sized one which is basically useless in our view.) The pages are of REALLY thick blotting type paper. i.e.thick heavy cardboard thickness. It is some special “fast release” formulation .. no idea what they use, but it really does WORK! There is then a special smooth plastic coating on one side. So you wash your stamps, and if you leave them to air dry on tea towels or blotting paper or newspaper, light creases and bends will always stay there. If they are placed into this book when touch damp (not sopping wet) and left there with the gum side to the plastic side and the front of stamp to the blotter side, they dry perfectly flat, and many light bends and creases vanish. Nearly all of them. It is amazing the difference they make, which is why we sell so many! Readers of www.stampboards.com have acclaimed these as one of the best stamp accessories on the market. Just put your stamps in, pile a few heavy books on top and forget them for a week. Most collectors have two books, as that is the secret ..... do NOT touch them for a week and let them dry slowly under weight. Most important. The special formulation plastic coated side is super important as otherwise many stamps STICK to blotter if damp and between 2 sheets of blotting paper, with heavy weight on top. These do not. Again it is some special coating they have figured out which works perfectly for this specific job. Almost any other kind of plastic sheet you may try to experiment with at home will leave a real ugly mirror like “SHEEN” on the gum side if placed in damp, under weight, which looks really stupid, and really shows what you have been doing. These do NOT. The books last for decades. They really do. A 10/- C of A Roo used and light creased copy will be $100 retail, and one that is nice and flat $200. So the cost of the book is paid 3 fold with just one stamp that is saved. Retail Price is $38 each. For readers we offer 27½% off retail special deal for purchases of two books

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation This month I look at exhibiting philatelic literature at stamp exhibitions and the new Championship Class at Sydney Stamp Expo 2015.

Sydney Stamp Expo 2015 Championship Class

The Australian philatelic event of 2015 is rapidly approaching. Sydney Stamp Expo 2015 ANZAC Centenary will be held from Thursday April 16 until Sunday April 19 2015 at the Johnny Warren Sports Centre in Penshurst Park Hurstville to commemorate the Centenary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli in 1915. Sydney Stamp Expo 2015 has announced that it will include a Championship Class which is open to exhibits from Australian exhibitors that have either

Neuer Ganzsachen-Katalog Aerogramme Amerika 2014 been awarded a Large Gold or Gold medal at an international exhibition (such as FIP or FIAP) or obtained a score of at least 90 points at three or more national and/or international exhibitions. Each entry will be awarded a Large Gold medal. The Grand Prix d’Honneur of the Exhibition will be awarded to the best entry as determined by the whole Jury. The inclusion of the Championship Class should provide visitors to the Exhibition with opportunity of seeing some of the very best exhibits from Australian exhibitors.

Australian Commonwealth Collectors’ Catalogue: Postal Stationery including Australian Territories material exhibited in frames. One exhibiting class which receives less attention and which is usually not represented in the frames is Philatelic Literature. Often the literature exhibits may be hard to spot at an exhibition, although they usually are available for the public to browse on request. At many exhibitions, including most international exhibitions, they are displayed and available to be perused in a reading room. A number of exhibitions have publicised literature exhibits by displaying an illustration of the cover and other information in an exhibition frame. As for the other exhibition classes, literature exhibits are judged by a set of rules set down by FIP and which are also used in Australian exhibitions. FIP defines philatelic literature as including all printed communications available to collectors

related to postage stamps, postal history, and their collecting, and to any of the specialised fields connected therewith. Philatelic literature exhibits are subdivided as follows: 1) Handbooks and Special Studies • Handbooks • Monographs • Specialised research articles • Bibliographies and similar special works • Exhibition catalogues • Specialised catalogues which besides philatelic issues of one or more countries treat varieties, cancellations or other specialized aspects. • Transcripts of philatelic lectures presented to the public (including radio, television, film and slide show scripts). • Similar special works. 2) General Catalogues • Worldwide, regional and single area catalogues whose depth of coverage does not qualify them as specialised catalogues. 3) Philatelic Periodicals • Philatelic journals and newspapers, society organs, house organs, yearbooks and similar publications. 4) Articles • Articles of a general nature, in philatelic or non-

Exhibitors provide information on publication date, publisher, number of pages, frequency of publication (for periodicals) and means of ordering the publication (address, price). Two copies of each literature exhibit are provided by the exhibitor. Following the exhibition these copies are usually sent to libraries and not returned to the exhibitor. The entry fee for a literature exhibit is usually equivalent to the price of one frame in the general competition class of the exhibition. Handbooks and special studies must have been published not earlier than 5 years prior to the exhibition year. For all other entries the publication date must not be earlier than 2 years prior to the exhibition year. Revised editions will be considered as new publications. For periodicals, the most recent complete volume or year is exhibited. A selection of at least ten different newspaper articles is required for exhibition. WORLDWIDE NEW ISSUES

Green Turtles - Ascension Island The Ascension Island Post Office is releasing a series of postcard rate stamps depicting the green turtle for which the island is so famous. Ascension Island has the second largest nesting population of the green turtle in the entire Atlantic Ocean and the largest nesting population of any marine turtle species in all of the UK Overseas Territories, with over 25,000 nests annually. The population was severely depleted by the harvesting of nesting females for meat

56 - Stamp News

during the 19th and early 20th centuries by those on the island and passing ships that would take live turtles on-board to ensure fresh meat for their journey. However, it is currently recovering strongly after decades of protection. Monitoring of the number of nesting turtles has been undertaken since 1977 by a mixture of visiting academics, local volunteers and, in recent years, the Ascension Island Government Conservation Department (AIGCD). Green turtle nesting

WORLDWIDE NEW ISSUES

on Ascension’s beaches has increased by more than 500 per cent since monitoring began, with more than 400 females nesting on the Island’s main nesting beach on any night during peak season. The green turtles nesting at Ascension migrate from their foraging grounds off the coast of Brazil every 3 – 4 years, returning to the island where they themselves were born over 30 years ago, to lay their eggs, a journey that takes approximately 5 – 6 weeks. New legislation enacted by the Island’s Governor in July 2014 committed a fifth of the Territory’s land area to biodiversity conservation, creating seven new nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries that include the Island’s three main turtle nesting beaches, along with globallyimportant seabird colonies that are home to more than 800,000 nesting seabirds. For further information about the

sea turtles or the work of AIGCD to conserve Ascension’s unique biodiversity, please visit the official website at www. ascension-island.gov.ac/conservation or find us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ AscensionIslandConservation or Twitter @ AIGConservation.

AAT fully IMPERFORATE Miniature Sheets issued by Australia Post!

In November 2013, Australia Post released 250 x IMPERFORATE panes of 15 mini sheets of stamps. The “1913 Disaster & Isolation” issue, for the Centenary of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) of 1911-14. The AAE left Hobart in December 1911 commanded by Douglas Mawson and returned in February 1914. Mawson was knighted for his achievements, and is regarded as one of the greatest figures of all Antarctic exploration. You needed to phone the PO “800” number, or order online. Cost was well above face value, and the maximum order was ONE sheet a person. Sold out in super-fast time, as you’d expect - within hours I am advised. There will be near none in the secondary market, as collectors who got very lucky, will not be sellers - at any price. I’d guess there are easily 20,000 keen global collectors of AAT, but only 250 of these sheets to go around. If 200 buyers hold on to their sheets for their collections, that leaves just FIFTY to service those 20,000 collectors worldwide. 99% of AAT collectors do not right now realise this IMPERF issue even exists! In the 56 years since AAT first issued stamps in 1957, I can’t recall any other *AAT* imperforates sold by the PO. Each sheet is hand numbered in top left margin, and also comes with a Certificate of Guarantee card from head of AP, confirming that only 250 panes in TOTAL were sold – globally. This is an Official Australia Post Australian Antarctic Territory issue. I am offering these as follows: SUBJECT UNSOLD – please use correct stock code!

A. Fully imperforate MUH or CTO AAT Mini Sheet - $A60 a sheet. (Stock code 629KE) B. Single imperforate sheet, with MASSIVE wide top or base sheet margin. $A80 (Stock code 629KF) C. PAIR of imperf panes from top LH, hand numbered “XXX/250” in margin, AND the matching AP card, $A170___ (Stock code 629KM) G. Normal perforated M/S & IMPERF sheet used on 23x32cm air cover to you $A70 post free Global! (Stock Code 629KO) Many more choices, inc. covers, and all photos are here – www.tinyurl.com/imperfsAAT order online: www.tinyurl.com/GlenOrder Cheques, money orders, cash, all credit cards, Amex, PayPal, and bank transfer accepted at ZERO extra fee. Rigidly Packed Post is $A4 in Australia (Add $5 for Registered, if needed), or $A9 Foreign Air (Add $A12 Registered if needed.)
