Spink in London conducted the sale of the Vestey W.A. on May 19. The collection was claimed to be “without doubt the most important to have appeared at auction”. This was a very traditional collection, often featuring more than I would regard as necessary representation of the given stamp issues, and I would have liked to see many more covers substituted for the perceived “duplication”, but irrespective I cannot argue with the Spink claim. Unsurprisingly, it did very well. This month I’ve selected an even dozen Vestey items which particularly caught my eye, and I’ll share with readers comments on why I like the subjects selected. Realisations throughout are exclusive of Buyer’s premium. My thanks to Spink, and Nick Startup in particular, for use of the imagery. Hard to argue that Figure 1 (Lot #4) does not make for an impressive first page for a bespoke W.A. collection. A complete sheet of 240 of W.A. “number 1” once existed, reduced to four blocks of 60, of which this is one of the more desirable given the sheet margins three sides. That other great W.A. collector, John Gartner, mentioned to me in the late 1960s that he was offered one of those blocks for £2000 (not necessarily the Vestey block), the exact same price he had paid for his 4d Inverted frame. This block sold for £35,000 (estimate £40,000/50,000), and the Vestey Inverted frame went for £102,000 (est £50,000/60,000), which suggests to me the 1d block was particularly good value. A comparison with Lot #5, an unused block of “just” 12 1d’s, which fetched £13,000 (est £10,000/12,000), suggests that on a pro rata basis

Figure 1. Impressive item, realisation not necessarily commensurate the block of 60 might have been worth closer to £65,000? What a wonderful challenge to attempt to reconstruct that sheet of 240! I last saw Figure 2 (#30) in 1980 when I owned it. The Spink description “One of

This Nov 25 1864 late use of imperf. 4d together with perf. 6d I find a charmer. It provides an indication of just why the second imperf. 4d, issued Jun 21 1864, is such a rarity genuinely postally used. SG have the second issue at £300 unused (a very readily available stamp) and £2250 used (wouldn’t I love to see a cover). It would appear that ample stocks of the original imperf. were widespread Figure 3. Imperforate and perforated, irresistible combination Stamp News - 7

“Tilted border” entry (presently S.G. 3i). No more do we need to be confused, I’m delighted to add, for Figure 4 (#97) reveals all . . . to perfection, clearly provided by unit three in the strip. This gorgeous multiple, cancelled “14” at Marradong, perfectly illustrates what we should be seeking. I still wonder, however, how does one determine the variety in single stamp format? Figure 6. Inverted stamp not to everyone’s taste The strip fetched £2400 (est £800/1000), considered to be the finest of the small number suggesting someone extant. Most collectors I encounter prefer their stamps Figure 5 (#123) is a remarkable unused example, on cover to be placed upright. I confess I’m generally of that persuasion, although perhaps, perversely, I don’t mind the odd sideways configuration? However, when the inverted stamp is an 1857 Hillman 2d in such superb condition as in Figure 6 (#189), one must recapitulate. Described as “splendid example” and “A remarkable example of this stamp on cover” (and I would add off cover!), one must acquiesce. It realised £5200 (est £6000/8000). This item once graced the fabulous Dale-Lichtenstein collection. To conclude, over the years one sees hundreds upon hundreds of this 2d stamp used off cover in varying grades. A cover such as this is 1:1000 of the subject stamp. Still on Hillman’s 2d, a variant was a glamour Figure 5. the 2d is an extremely rare stamp, but the force of single-country collecting has clearly been an advantage in the case of the Canada stamp. Vestey was particularly well represented in the rouletted 2d, remarkably having three examples. Figure 7 (#192), an example tied to piece, must be one of the finest, if not the finest extant. Ex “Austin” (the notorious John du Pont, one time owner of the British Guiana 1c Black on magenta, the world’s most valuable stamp), it realised £2500 (est £1000/1200). Very respectable (given SG is £1700), but for a stamp that is rarer than the Canada 12d Black, a disappointment for we philatelic historians. Rouletted stamps generally have largely fallen out of favour with today’s generation of collectors. Perhaps not surprising as so many Figure 7. Once a challenger to Canada’s 12d Black offered nowadays are questionable, thanks to the mounting number of the unscrupulous who 1960s, amongst other unexpected favourites, he was have entered Philately. Not so any such doubts enamoured with the rouletted form of the Hillman 2d. the wayside, that #217, a rouletted of the elusive Golden bronze shade of this stamp issue (unlisted SG), estimated at £1000/1200, fetched just £700. It was listed for Private Treaty by Robson Lowe in 1943 for the then princely sum of £100. The price of a beach shack on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula at that time. Probably a Figure 9. Figure 10. Charming Essay time to fulfil the payment deadline. It was a heady time, but I made it (just). I would have liked to include amongst my purchases the charming early 1860s Mute Swan Essays, but Mike Brachi was a good client and asked me to “be gentle”. Figure 10 (#325) was one of Mike’s wins, and what a wonderful item it was at Vestey for just £800 (est £1000/1200). I see uber common mint and used stamps of Australia and the World sell ad nauseum for such Figure 12. A sleeper? a sum, and multiples

thereof, to my utter bewilderment. Covers are one of a few categories in Philately which lend themselves to multiple applications for exhibitors. Figure 11 (#373) is a case in question. More obviously, a spectacular item for a W.A. exhibit, but what an exotic item for an Italian Postage due exhibit! I wonder was it an Italyspecific collector who paid the £4500 (est £500/600) for this character-filled item. I can’t help myself in mentioning what price those stamps had they have been removed from that unique cover? Under Figure 9 I raised the challenge of seeking solo frankings of those stamps of W.A. that one could reasonably hope to find. I could extend that challenge to include multiple frankings of the given stamp, and under that banner Figure 12 (#494) would be imminently desirable. I have found the 1888 4d red-brown to be very elusive on cover. In this example we have no less than a pair of the stamp, used Apr 16 1890 Perth to Philadelphia. A great example of usage of this stamp, it realised £700 (est a tantalising £200/250). So ends the Vestey overview, and to conclude this month, I offer two items from the Phoenix May 30 sale, which I found to be excellent examples of the extremes one often encounters in auctions, representing each end of the philatelic poles.

Stamp News - 11

I appear to have increasingly few allies nowadays in my assessment of many aspects of philatelic preferences pursued by the present generation of Commonwealth collectors. Philatelic generation-gap at play, perhaps? So it is that I find it difficult to reconcile that Figure 13 (Phoenix #606), the Figure 13. Great 5d Kangaroo item for less than the price of an off-centre best Kangaroo 5d/State “unmounted mint” combination cover I’ve seen (with NSW 2½d) was overweight when presented at P.O. The Sydney datestamp is not clear 5d sell for more than this great cover. from the scan, but most probably the item departed At the other end of the Philatelic poles, Phoenix Australia in Nov 1913, judging from date of U.S. delivered a remarkable result for a Navigator 7/6d transit marking. The placement of the NSW stamp usage item. Figure 14 suggests it was an afterthought, possibly as the item (#1113) was a Feb 9 1966 solo use of this incredibly rare correctly commercially used stamp on intact postal article. From a known collector in Shepparton to U.K., it overpaid by 1/- the double airmail rate (4/6d) + registration fee (2/-). Nevertheless, from a pre-sale estimate of $150, it went on to realise $1000. Sometimes I have to invoke one of my great friend Mark Knothe’s favourite lines: “Well, cut off me legs and call Figure 14. Great realisation, not necessarily for the right reasons me shorty!” 12 - Stamp News

WORLDWIDE NEW ISSUES

Islands of Australia Australia Post is showcasing the stunning scenery of four beautiful Australian islands in a new stamp release. The islands featured are Phillip Island, Victoria; Lady Musgrave Island, Queensland; Bruny Island, Tasmania; and the Buccaneer Archipelago, Western Australia. Australia Post Philatelic Manager, Michael Zsolt said: “Australian landscapes are renowned for their natural beauty and diversity, drawing visitors from around the world. The Islands of Australia stamp designs capture those qualities and will appeal to Australians and tourists alike.” “Australia comprises more than 8,000 islands - this stamp issue presents four Australian islands, with a focus on showcasing their diverse and interesting terrain,” Mr Zsolt said. Designed by Jo Muré from the Australia Post Design Studio, the stamps include: • Phillip Island, Victoria: located just over 100 kilometres south of Melbourne. The stamp features the rugged and rocky Cape Woolamai, which offers beautiful views of the Pinnacles rock formation. • Lady Musgrave Island, Queensland: an uninhabited, coral cay

located in the Great Barrier Reef and forms part of the Capricorn Cays National Park. The navigable lagoon featured on the stamp, boasts an abundance of coral, fish and turtles. • Bruny Island, Tasmania: located south of Hobart. North and South Bruny Islands are connected by an isthmus, known as The Neck, which is featured on the stamp. The isthmus provides a home to native wildlife and offers magnificent 360-degree views from Truganini’s Lookout. • The Buccaneer Archipelago, Western Australia: the Archipelago is a spectacular collection of around 1,000 islands in a remote and pristine area off the Kimberley coast. Strong tidal movements create an amazing natural phenomena – the Horizontal Falls in Talbot Bay, which are featured on the stamp. The stamp issue comprises two domestic base rate (70c) and two large letter rate ($1.40 and $2.10) stamps. The products associated with this stamp issue include a first day cover, stamp pack, booklet of 10 x 70c self-adhesive stamps and a set of four maxicards. The Islands of Australia stamp issue is available from 2 June 2015 at participating Post Offices, via mail order on 1800 331 794 and online at auspost. com.au/stamps while stocks last. A PIONEER STAMP DEALER It is now 175 years since the very first postage stamp – the Penny Black - was released on May 6, 1840. In 1890, the first issue of the Gibbons Stamp Magazine was printed. Today, 125 years later, it is the leading philatelic magazine in the UK. Stanley Gibbons was born just a few weeks after the issue of the Penny Black. We can safely assume that stamp collecting has its origins in the British Isles as people started collecting the novelty almost immediately. As a schoolboy Stanley became interested in postage stamps and he was allowed to deal in stamps from his father’s chemist’s shop in Plymouth. He also helped out in the shop

14 - Stamp News

whenever his assistance was needed. In 1864, Stanley issued his first printed pricelist. His stamp dealing activities got a real boost the day a sailor entered the shop offering the young dealer a sack full of stamps from Cape of Good Hope. Stanley acquired the sack and his business increased considerably. Stanley needed more space for his stamp business and had to leave his father’s store. In 1867, Stanley’s father passed away and the young stamp dealer had to sell the chemist’s shop as he didn’t have the time to run it efficiently. Stanley Gibbons married the first of five wives in 1872. His wives usually passed away

Christer Brunström after a few years of marriage but Stanley never had any problems finding a new partner. Some suspicious people have suggested that all these deaths were due to Stanley’s knowledge of drugs but there is absolutely no proof for these theories. Stanley Gibbons moved his company to London where it operated from different addresses. At one point in time he employed a number of young women to work in the evening hours at his premises to tear up stamp sheets and assemble sets of stamps and packets. Not knowing the exact nature of Stanley Gibbons’ business, many of the neighbours reported the regular arrival of the young ladies

to the police as a very suspicious activity. I suppose they all got a good laugh when they discovered what was really going on in the building. Stanley Gibbons was only 50 years old when he decided to sell his stamp business in 1890. It was acquired by Charles Phillips for £25.000, a very large sum of money at that time. Soon after taking over the Stanley Gibbons firm Phillips launched his stamp magazine. Until his death in 1913, Stanley Gibbons travelled a lot in both Europe and South Asia. Sometimes he acted as an agent for his old company buying stamps wherever he could find any.

A PIONEER STAMP DEALER Stanley Gibbons Ltd has undergone many changes during its long existence. At one time it was owned by Esselte, a Swedish company which knew nothing about the stamp business. Today it is a large concern with numerous associated companies. The SG flagship store is located on The Strand in central London. From this address they also run public and postal auctions. The SG catalogue business and the editorial offices of the Gibbons Stamp Monthly are located in Hampshire. The SG group also includes several other auction companies and dealerships not only offering stamps but many other collectables.

16 - Stamp News

Benham is one of those associated companies. It specialises in the creation of very attractive First Day Covers. Senior Development Designer Leanne Sherliker has been working here since 1998 mostly designing the company’s covers. In connection with the 175th anniversary of the the Penny Black and the birth of Stanley Gibbons and the 125th anniversary of the Gibbons Stamp Monthly the SG firm joined forces with the Isle of Man Post Office to release a commemorative set comprising six values. The designs were the work of Leanne Sherliker. The set was issued on February 17, 2015.

Christer Brunström The 1p value depicts a nice copy of the Penny Black. Today a 1 penny denomination is pretty useless but I guess they found it appropriate to use the same denomination as on the world’s first stamp issued in 1840. The Two Pence Blue was also released in 1840 and it is depicted on the 42p value. The Penny Black was replaced in 1841 by the Penny Red. This really was a security measure to avoid the reuse of the black stamps where the postmarks were not always that easy to see. A beautiful Penny Red is depicted on the 90p stamp. As a longtime contributor to the Gibbons Stamp Monthly I was particularly interested

in the £1.20 value depicting the likeness of Stanley Gibbons and the front page of a magazine published in 1940 marking the centenary of the Penny Black. William Mulready and postal reformer Rowland Hill are depicted on the £1.60 and £2.30 respectively. They are both well-known names in British postal history. In my opinion Leanne Sherliker has created a very nice set of stamps. The stamps were printed in sheets of 20 with decorative margins. A complete set of sheets is quite costly; I guess most collectors will settle for just a set of the six stamps which provide an excellent lesson in early philatelic history.

The tragic tale of an English mother deprived of her soldier son’s final letter home before he was killed because it was destroyed by the censor has been revealed as the Royal Mail releases commemorative First World War stamps. Lance Corporal Sydney Speed was fighting on the Western Front when he was killed in action on October 28 1915. But his mother was robbed of the chance to read his final words home as the letter he sent the day before his death was destroyed by censors because it was sent in the wrong-coloured envelope. His heartbroken mother told of her anger in a letter published in the Daily Express in 1915. She had waited for weeks “with unspeakable anxiety” for a letter from her son when the green envelope finally arrived. “Picture my dismay when on opening it I found not the long-delayed letter from my son but typed notice, ‘Letter destroyed; this pattern of envelope is obsolete and its use is forbidden’ and the return of a family letter I had sent for him to read.” “Six days later I was notified that my son had died in the field.” “By this heartless piece of red-tapeism I have been deprived of my son’s last words to his mother.”

The destruction of letters by the censor purely because they were sent in green envelopes, which had become obsolete, had sparked criticism in the press. The Speeds’ story was discovered by the Royal Mail as they researched what images to put on their 2015 First World War commemorative stamps. One of the stamps features the image of a football which was kicked by British troops in the Battle of Loos on the Western Front in 1915, in which L/Cpl Speed fought shortly before his death. Royal Mail spokesman said: “The Battle of Loos was a major battle and there was this legendary football that soldiers smuggled in and played with. “When all the soldiers were going over the top they kicked it over towards the German front, it was meant to be a morale booster, to keep them going. “As they were hammered with machine gun fire and gas, the football survived.” “There are so many tragedies and stories from the Great War it is hard to tease out just a few.”

Several million service men and women fought in the conflict, which claimed the lives of more than 58,000 Americans. Two hundred fifty-eight people who served during the war received the Medal of Honour.

Stamps in the News - Globally! Vatican Post marked these two anniversaries with the issue of a miniature sheet consisting of two postage stamps of 2.00 euro each. The stamps feature work by artist Marco Ventura who on the first value depicts an injured hand against a dark background to symbolize the defeat of humanity in the face of the horrors of war. The second stamp shows three hands symbolically holding up the world, the UN headquarters in New York, and an olive branch against a fair sky, all representing the possibility of building together a future of peace. “These errors are very rare and can be worth several hundred to several thousand dollars,” said Mark Oakley, with the Okanagan Mainline Philatelic Association. “For example, one of the most famous Canadian errors is the 1959 St. Lawrence Seaway stamp which has a catalogue value of $16,000.” Oakley said the value of the Pansy error is yet to be determined as none have been offered for sale. “Finding a stamp error is one of the great thrills in stamp collecting — it’s something everyone dreams about, but like winning the lottery, happens to only a very few and lucky collectors,” said Oakley.

The world’s most accomplished stamp collector? Reported at www.stampnews.com

William “Bill” Gross started collecting stamps because his mother made a mistake. When he was small, she had bought sheets of newly issued stamps in the belief that when young Bill was 18, they would be so valuable that they would pay for his college education. But when he tried to sell them, he found they were worthless. Gross won a scholarship to college and went into the bond market, trading so successfully that the PIMCO Total Return fund that he manages became the world’s largest bond fund. But he never forgot his mother’s adventure in stamp collecting. “She had the right idea”, he says. “She just bought the wrong stamps. When I was 40 and I’d made some money, I got the notion that I would do it right”. He developed his own system, designed to take the guesswork out of the stamp market. Gross’s theory is that prices of all collectibles are heavily influenced

by a nation’s wealth: therefore a stamp’s price should rise in tandem with the GDP. He studied auction catalogues going back 60 years to trace the relationship between price and prosperity. “No one had ever tried to value stamps this way”, he says. Applying his system meant that he bought stamps that were undervalued because their price had risen more slowly than GDP, and he bought on a grand scale. After almost 20 years of collecting, he has become a legend. He admits to spending more than US$100,000,000 on a collection that includes stamps from America, Britain and the British Empire, and Scandinavia. As his acquisitions multiplied, his system failed to keep pace with his ambition. To complete his collection of 19th century American stamps, he needed the 1868 one-cent Z-grill. But only two existed. To obtain one, he took part in one of the most famous swaps in the history of stamp collecting, exchanging a sheet of four “inverted Jennys” for his Z-grill. His Jennies had cost him US$3,000,000, but he went ahead nonetheless. For him, the stamp he needed was beyond price. Gross’s pricing system had

also stopped working for British stamps. A strong pound and an influx of petrodollars into the market for British stamps meant prices were rising faster than his system dictated they should. Consequently, he decided to sell his British collection in June 2007 and donate the proceeds to Médecins Sans Frontières. The British collection had cost him US$2,500,000 and his dealers, Spink Shreves Galleries in New York, hoped to double that at auction. In fact, it sold for US$9,100,000. “It’s better than the stock market”, said Mr Gross. In 2008 Gross put two more of his collections on the market. His Scandinavian stamps were sold in May, and his British Empire collection went on sale in New York on October 3rd at Spink Shreves. It included a rare 1849 Indigo Blue two-pence from the island of Mauritius. The estimate for this one stamp is $75,000 to $100,000, and the total for the 138 items is $1.25m to $1.5m. For these sales the charitable beneficiary was the Millennium Village

Looking at New Zealand

1971 One Ton Cup New Zealand has a long tradition of yacht (decked) and sail-boat (undecked) designing, building and racing. Auckland, with its fine harbour, has the highest ownership of sailing boats per-capita in the world. From the 1840s onwards, local designs were built and raced in formal classes administered by the sailing clubs. Later, British and international designs were built and racing competitions for these classes were held. New Zealand-built boats were sought after by Australian yachtsmen. After World War II, New Zealanders began to participate in international competitions. Peter Mander and Jack Cropp won a gold medal in the Sharpie class at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne and in 1958 Geoff Smale and Ralph Roberts won the Prince of Wales Cup in the International 14 class at Cowes, England. In 1964 New Zealand again won an Olympic gold medal

in the Flying Dutchman class. The One Ton Cup event was founded in Paris in 1899 and was originally competed for in 7-metre dinghies weighing up to one tonne.

From 1907 to 1964 the cup was competed for in International 6-Metre class yachts. In 1965 it was made an ocean-racing event for 22-feet class boats. The cup itself was designed in 1897 by the jeweller Robert Linzeler and was made by Bratiau in 1898. It is made of planished solid silver and weighs 10 kilos. It is 58 centimetres wide (81 with the handles) and 57 centimetres high, on an ebony plinth. It is considered a masterpiece of Art Nouveau style. In 1968 Rainbow II , skippered by Chris Bouzaid, came second in the One Ton Cup and in 1969 she won the event at Heligoland, Germany. New Zealanders Stamp News - 27

Looking at New Zealand heard the news of the One Ton Cup victory on 21 July 1969, the same day they heard of the successful landing of men on the moon. Bouzaid had sold his house to finance the designing of Rainbow II by the Florida-based Sparkman & Stephens company and had it built in New Zealand by M C Carter Ltd. Figure 2 shows Rainbow II training in the Hauraki Gulf. A full restoration of the yacht has been completed this year in the Wayne Olsen yard north of Auckland. Because of the 1969 victory, the 1971 event was held in New Zealand, in the Hauraki Gulf east of the entrance to Auckland Harbour. This was marked by the issue of two stamps. The 5 cents, designed by James Berry, showed a One Ton class yacht (ie a 22-footer) sailing on Auckland Harbour with Rangitoto Island in the background. The 8 cents, designed by Geoff Fuller, showed the One Ton Cup trophy against a schematic drawing of such a yacht. The stamps were printed in four-colour lithography

by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co on chalk-surfaced paper without watermark. Both values were printed in sheets of 100 stamps (10 rows of 10) on two sets of cylinders numbered 1111 and 1a1a1a1a. The perforation gauged 13½ x 13. The date of issue was 3 March 1971 and the stamps were withdrawn on 30 April. Catalogue of New Zealand Stamps, Auckland, Campbell Paterson, 1952 – . Farewell Arthur (“The Guv’nor”) Gray Philately lost a gem on May 22, when Arthur Gray passed away after a long illness. The funeral at North Ryde on May 29 brought together a huge reunion of his many philatelic friends from various parts of the nation. Moving eulogy’s from Arthur’s children, Danielle, Rebecca and Cameron, and Philatelist, Michael Drury, ensured a dry eye would not be found in the Chapel. Cameron provided a narration which included a resume of Arthur’s professional and business careers, plural for he had three lives in commerce, each providing “windfalls” as Cameron so precisely expressed. Arthur seldom spoke to we in Philately about his commercial success, and to some mourners present this information may well have been a side of Arthur of which they knew little or nothing. The revelation, however, would go a long way to explaining just how Arthur was able to facilitate the amassing of the greatest Commonwealth collection ever formed. This tribute to Arthur will share some of the fond memories I have from the 45 years I knew him. Although largely personal, I hope that I can capture the essence of the man that so many came to admire, indeed love in Philately. I first met Arthur at a Harmer’s of Sydney auction in the late 1960s. My philatelic business was then getting in to gear, an auction house was about to be launched, and I had the cash flow that enabled me to be able to buy the Commonwealth “hero” items for which Harmer’s in those times had the monopoly. Arthur and I would conduct a post mortem of an auction over a few beers at the Sydney Hilton. Many years later, Arthur confided “Perry, I hated you in these days, buying all those items I could only dream of owning.” Only Arthur could have made such a comment so graciously. Of course, eventually he would come to own

virtually every great item of Commonwealth. After I bought the publishing rights to The Australian Commonwealth Specialists’ Catalogue (ACSC) in 1992, Arthur become a regular around the corridors. He, Editor Geoff Kellow, and I enjoyed many meals together, designated Editorial Board meetings. It was thirsty work, but someone had to do it. Arthur’s collection was always at Geoff’s disposal, and over the years provided many of the illustrations in the catalogue, and assisted in solving many issues, which regularly arose in a constantly evolving publication. Arthur lobbied for some years to be included in the ACSC Pricing sub-committee. I had respectfully declined his kind offer, as he could be very persuasive when it came to valuing items in his collection. Eventually I relented, and invited Arthur to join me in the final pricing revision for one of the 1990s editions of Kangaroos. Madel, my wife, prepared us a fabulous dinner, after which we retired downstairs for the “arm wrestle”, as Arthur put it. Apparently by way of celebrating Arthur’s appointment to the illustrious Pricing subcommittee, Madel kept bringing down fine bottles of wine all evening. Meanwhile, I had been noting Arthur’s comments in a numbered list. There were 27 notes on subjects considered worthy of inclusion in the catalogue. The following morning, Arthur and I, in a very sad state, reconvened to review those 27 comments. I mentioned to Arthur that my writing after item 21 had deteriorated to such an extent that I was unable to read my own hand, and could he recall the subject matter of the six items after No. 21? Arthur blurted back: “Hey, Perry, I can’t even recall the first 21 subjects. Arthur was a relative latecomer to philatelic exhibiting; Gary Brown of the APF summed it up perfectly when he described Arthur as a former “closet collector”. His Australia 99 highly successful exhibit would introduce the world to the best-kept secret in Philately. Lamenting that 20th century exhibits don’t receive Grand Prix awards at

International exhibitions, Arthur asked why is that so. I suggested that after 1913, the centenary of the Kangaroo issue, judging opinion might shift more favourably towards his beloved series. In response, Arthur became fidgety and boomed “I’ll be dead by then!” Come 2013, I was delighted to point out that for once he was wrong. Arthur had once told me that he admired me for having won the Grand Prix at AUSIPEX 84, at such a young age. I would like to think that this was an inspiration to him in his remarkably successful exhibiting career. It was at London 2000, while clowning around together delivering poor renditions of Cockney that the nickname “Guv” was born (“care for a pint, Guv?”). Arthur at the time referred to me as “M’ Lord”, a reference to a short-lived Manorial brokerage sideline I had in the 1980s. As part of the conveyancing process I had to personally assume these Manorial titles (so-called Lordships of the Manor), and Arthur thought one title, The Lord of Parlington, suited me. He thought so much of

that title, in fact, he nearly talked himself in to buying it. “I’d love to see Nancy addressed as The Lady of Parlington”, he would say as if to convince himself. A few years later, after I began to write regular columns in this magazine, waxing lyrical on the subject of commercial covers, Arthur would demote me from “Your Lordship” to “Li’l chippie”. He made no secret of his disapproval that in his opinion I had turned my back on Traditional Philately, once uttering “I haven’t liked you as much, Perry, since you turned to the dark side.” In 2001 I resolved to divest myself of my philatelic auction and publishing businesses. 30 years in auctions was a life sentence, and I knew there would be a dearth of takers for such a gruelling enterprise (affectionately referred to by those in the industry as “the treadmill”). Knowing Arthur had recently sold his multi-store health food business, and would be itching for a new challenge, I hatched a plan to bundle the auction and publishing businesses in to a single package, and raise the prospect of Arthur buying it. Unlike the auction business, the ACSC would be saleable to multiple prospects, and I knew Arthur would be nervous about it falling in to the “wrong hands”. Over a few beers, conceding he would have to buy the package, Arthur commented “You’re a “b”, Perry, but I would have done exactly the same”. He reached for a serviette, and asking me to repeat the offer, drafted the contract. By settlement time, the canny Arthur had formed a consortium of three, which gave birth to Millennium Philatelic Auctions. The ACSC now in safe hands, Arthur gracefully exited the consortium.

I’ll miss you, “Guv”. Rod Perry

Revenue Review Just Plain Nice

Great stamp on so many levels, this single copy [fig 1] being picked from a 2000 plus hoard, the star item within. Level 1. Small Town. Level 2. Postal Cancel. Level 3. Wartime paper shortage with the printer issuing plain paper with grey security underprint ‘Q.G.R.’ in large letters at the top with ‘QUEENSLAND RAILWAYS’ on all four sides. Level 4. Clean stamp neat cancel. I do not think another like this will be turning up for a very long time.

Essay

Grosvenor auctions in the UK had a super railway parcel stamp collection recently going off. One of the more attractive essays from the Australian Colonies

was figure 2 from South Australia.

Thursday Island Customs

Another new Qld Port Customs duty revenue [fig 3] has turned up in a mixed lot from the UK, this time from the Port of Thursday Island. I believe the buyer [a UK dealer] will be selling it shortly on eBay. This is another one of those ‘outside the box’ areas you need to keep you eye on.

Junior Shooter

One of the things I love about eBay is the fact you can view items you would rarely see in any dealers stock. Figure’s 4 & 5 are 2 such items. The first [fig 4] being the very last issue by Victoria for a Shooters

Fig 1 Fig 2

Fig 3

42 - Stamp News

Fig 7

Dave Elsmore Permit from the late 1980’s, giving the holder the right to hunt. The second, and far more rare is a Junior Shooters Permit from 1977. Strangely the instructions on the back do not list any age restrictions, or clarify at what age one must be to be classed as a junior. Maybe you used to get these and can remember. If so can you please make contact with me? and a thank you in anticipation. This is the first Junior Permit I have seen and would like to record it here in Revenue Review. This issue of hunting stamps were remaindered in very large quantities. Used on full document is scarce, as the majority, were discarded by non-collectors.

More Rubbish

More Torres Strait Settlement rubbish Cinderella’s

[fig 6] have turned up, this time from Europe. As with an earlier note I have made on this issue, they belong in the bin! There was not even a settlement when these were purportedly issued. Alas they have been somewhat glamorised to fool the unsuspecting collector through the years. Totally unofficial and classed as wallpaper by more sensible collectors.

Cobb This

Early ephemera from Cobb & Co, Queensland is hard to find. Surprisingly no parcel stamps are recorded until c1930’s. All I have on this company is figures 7 & 8. More Wine

Mossgreen auction house has unearthed a super Wine & Spirit document [fig 9] bearing a 1½d bi-colour from Western Australia. These are sort after by collectors of several disciplines. This 1½d value in bi-colour is the only value recorded, can you add to it?

Multiples

It is always nice to see usage of a single value stamp in large multiples, and figure 10 is no exception. This little THREE PENCE surcharge on the 1d is always a delight to add to your collection. Last month fortunately figure 10 made its way to Qld! Coming from a collection of

revenues sold off by Grosvenor auctions in the UK and onto eBay. Its surprising how many times these large auction houses attempt to sell ‘general’ revenues only to have them bought and placed onto eBay, where they can achieve 10 fold in the realized pricing. Of course quality revenue and railway items will fair better in a large public auction. Figure 11 is another one of those multiples you rarely see, this being the rouletted 1d in a blk of 6, very nice indeed.

Stamped Paper

It’s always nice to see quality revenues stamped paper and figure 12 is no different. I just happen to be a Queensland ‘Miner’s Right’. For a 10/- annual fee back in 1869 it gave the said holder a right to mine for gold,

Dave Elsmore tin or copper. The first I have seen with a postal cancel on. In this case ‘96’ from Gympie, a well known gold mining town. I spied this in one of Status International auctions.

Perfin Corner

This month I have two nice items to share with you all. Firstly figure 13 a lovely blk of 8 of the £1 KEVII from NSW. Multiples are hard to find from this 4-die device. As you can see the blk was folded prior to punching in the large LLG Perfin for Liverpool & London & Globe Insurance Company. This company is well documented on Perfins.com.au. Secondly figure 14 [lucky for some] a very nice pair of Qld 1892 Stamp duty issues with the so called faded one inscribed ‘THREE’ issued after

the 3d one on the left. Surprisingly the common 3d received multiple bids in auction, whereas the right copy was picked up for the reserve, and what a bargain it is. The ‘THREE PENCE’ is rare enough genuinely used but to have a Perfin within makes this doubly rare, and the first copy of this Perfin to come to light in the ‘THREE’ issue. Of course this so called ‘faded’ copy is common from the remainder sets with the colourless impressed cancel on. My guess is many collectors are yet to educate themselves on this issue and may have just looked at it as a faded poor quality stamp. To me it is eye candy at the highest level. Ok back to the Perfin within N.Z./I.C. is again well documented on perfins. com.au if you have not found time to check it out, get to it!

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation This month I look at one of the lesser known exhibiting classes, Astrophilately, a class which came out of the excitement and interest born of the first manned flights, the ‘space race’ and the moon landings of the 1960s and 70s.

A high degree of knowledge is also required on precursors related to space exploration and space flight. Special cancellations for anniversaries of space events should be avoided except when no original event cancellation is available. Special attention should be given in the exhibit to the origin of the postmarks and the date and time related to the different space events. Also of importance is demonstrating knowledge of the different types of postmarks applied for the same event. USSR Space Programs: In the early period, as a rule, no announcement was made in advance of the launch site or date of a rocket or spaceship launch. Prior to 1975 it is possible to record space events with stamps, postal stationery, envelopes and cards with special cancellations referring to the mission and duration of flight time. From April 1975 onwards, official postmarks are available from the Baikonur Cosmodrome recording the launch of space stations, supply and manned spaceships. The postmarks of the Cosmodrome are preferable to those of the official trading company. Postmarks for

launches should be shown from post offices nearest to the launch sites (Cosmodrome) cancelled on the date of the event. Space Mail is philatelic material that was flown aboard a spacecraft. post offices functioned in space stations from 1978 on. For manned space programs and for deep space missions (after launch) the postmark of the corresponding mission control centre responsible for supervision can be shown. Postmarks from tracking sites and ships participating in the mission may be shown as a supplement if they are dated during the mission. Landings of spacecraft should be recorded by the postmark of the post office near to the landing site. USA Space Programs: Envelopes and cards recording launches, landings or other space activities should be postmarked with the exact date on which they took place. Where the post office was closed at the time when launches, landings or other space activities took place, the postmark of the next working day can be shown. Postmarks for launches should be shown only from the post office nearby to the site of the launch. Postmarks of the launch sites and different rocket test sites in the

and for lunar and space probes. Postmarks from tracking stations and ships participating in the mission may be shown as a supplement. European Space Programs: Postmarks recording the launch of satellites and/or research and experimental rockets should be shown from the post offices of the launch sites in chronological order within the different programs including the Europe/ USA and the Europe/USSR co-operation programs. Covers with an additional official European Space Agency (ESA) cachet (from 1979 onwards, Kourou) are of particular interest. Since the development of the first space rocket A4/V2 in Germany during World War II was top secret, this important period in space exploration can be recorded by philatelic items not relating to the launch date of an A4/ V2 but showing the postmark of place and/or additional specific marks referring to a military unit or a detachment, which can be demonstrated to have been responsible for the development and/ or the construction of such rockets. For different national space programs the national mission control centres are responsible. Postmarks from tracking sites participating in the mission may be shown as a supplement. China Space Programs: In the early period, no announcement was made in advance of the launch site or date of a rocket or satellite launch. Prior to 1986, it was not possible to obtain a record of space activities. There were no postmarks from the launch site, date cancellations of space events or special cancellations for the event. Thus the early period may be covered by commemorative cancellations and similar items. After 1986, postmarks recording launches of spacecraft should only be shown from the post office near by the launch site with the exact date of the event. Other Countries Participating in Space Programs: For launches the postmarks of the post office nearby to launch sites can be shown. An astrophilatelic exhibit may be broad in scope or relate to a self-contained section. Some examples are outlined below. Exhibits on Unmanned Space Programs can cover: • Astronomy: The exploration of the Moon, the Sun, the planets and star systems by use of stratosphere balloons, rockets, satellites and space probes recording the various events, and also the related precursors. • Meteorology: The beginning of weather forecasting and the use of observatories, research balloons and high altitude ballistic rockets, with emphasis on modern data collection and transmission by recording the launches of the various types of meteorological satellites. • Telecommunication: Following a brief survey on the initial means of transmitting news, show the progress in technology from the launch of the first telecommunication balloon and satellite test flights to the present world-wide network of different types of telecommunication satellites launched by activities of participating countries. • Exploration of the Earth: The progress in exploring the Earth ‘s magnetic field, the atmosphere, and the radiation belts, as well

as geographic, geodesy and geological data collection by use of stratosphere balloons, rockets and satellite Beginning of the Conquest of Space: The space research programs of the International Geophysical Year 1957-58 and the International Geophysical Cooperative Year 1959 are an acceptable way to introduce an exhibit on the beginning of the conquest of space. Manned Space Programs: Manned space flights of USSR/Russia, USA, China and multinational flights as well as the missions performed by the astronauts/cosmonauts are the basis of this study. The space events of all countries or one country may be shown in chronological order. Related precursors (e.g. scientific and medical manned stratosphere balloons, rocket plane flights, rocket experiments with animals, capsule recoveries, tests of survival equipment, test flights of satellites and rocket carriers) may be included together with space probes exploring the Moon. If you are interested in space flights, perhaps you should try exhibiting in the Astrophilately class which is available at National exhibitions.

Market Matters VALE - Arthur Gray 1939-2015.

Many readers will not know yet, but well known collector Arthur Gray passed away peacefully on May 22 in Sydney, from a long illness, aged 76. As I commented on the “Sydney Morning Herald” Memorial page – tinyurl.com/GrayTribute that many of his stamp world friends have added to, and keep adding to “Larger Than Life” really sums up Arthur perfectly, and he will be sadly missed by all his many stamp collecting friends - globally. In my lifetime there has never been, and I am sure will there ever be, any more influential or knowledgeable collector of this Australasian region. A true Philatelic LEGEND in every sense of that word. I have met no other collector in my 35 years as a full time dealer that you’d also brand “Larger Than Life”, and Arthur “Nugget” Gray held that title all on his own in my view. RIP Arthur William Sinclair Gray never met him. Stamp collectors are generally quiet and reserved, indeed they are often intensely private, and downright withdrawn and reclusive - but not Mr Arthur Gray.

The cheeky prankster.

The family members recounted his practical jokes and cheeky pranks right up to his passing, and at

his home we saw home videos of him cavorting in sequinned dresses and wig, and (badly) singing Johnny Cash songs at family gatherings, beer in hand etc. As a perfect example of the intensely private collector type, UK collector Sir Gawaine Baillie did not exhibit, or belong to any clubs, attend any auctions, or even discuss stamps with those in his closest circles. Sotheby’s auctioned his superb stamp collection, and it realised £15,975,438 - or near $A40 million at the time. This represents the highest total ever achieved for any single owner series of stamp sales in Europe. Sir Gawaine Baillie’s family and close friends did not even know he collected stamps - literally. They thought he was in his office doing “company bookwork” all those long nights. Contrast that with Arthur Gray who for the past 15-20 years of his life had stamps as a dominant and major factor in his life, and he “lived the dream”. Travelling the world exhibiting, selling, buying and discussing them. By 1999 Arthur had his successful business career largely behind him, and in very good hands. The children were all educated and independent and successful, and it was now the hour for his stamp collections to blossom onto the global stage.

Never exhibited until aged 60.

Arthur never exhibited anywhere until 17 years back, and was aged 60 when he won his first serious level medal at “Australia 99”. Since then he won at least 21 Large Gold, and 11 Gold Medals at world philatelic exhibitions, for his various Australian Stamp News - 55

The family members joked at the wake, they were thereafter now always going to fly long haul in some kind of comfort, and would toast Arthur with Champagne each time, to his memory! His sparring with dealers over prices was absolutely legendary, and he won nearly every time. No matter how scarce or fine it was, Arthur would heap friendly scorn and derision on your major rarity piece, and offer you half the asking price! That was a truly amazing few days, and we’d go out partying every night until 3am at Irish pubs etc, with another sadly departed friend Simon Dunkerley, and others. Arthur vigorously shook “salt” over it for a minute, to discover it was SUGAR. His schmoozing of these tough New Yorkers to get it replaced free, was something to behold! World Record Price for Australasia

A good used, 3 margin Western Australia 1854 4d Blue Swan “Inverted Frame” stamp has just sold for around $A250,000. The stamp sold for £122,400 at the Spink Lord Vestey sale of May 19 - around $A250,000. More than DOUBLE their top estimate of £50,000£60,000. My checking reveals it is a world record price for ANY single stamp from Australasia, from 1850, to the present day. Pretty amazing, and is WAY over full Gibbons catalogue of £90,000 for SG 3h. World Record Price - $A250,000 The 1928 Imperforate Kookaburra Miniature Sheet at $A326,000, and the unissued block 6 of the 2d red KEVIII stamp at $A500,000 (also ex Vestey) got more in dollars, but have 4 and 6 stamps in them. The Arthur Gray Imprint block 4 of the £1 Brown and Blue Kangaroo shown nearby was invoiced at $A265,000 in 2007, but again is 4 stamps, and not one. At the time of that sale it held the record price.

Some opinion now seems to lean to it NOT being forged. And the damaged strip of 3 x 4d used stamps, showing part of an inverted frame on one! In December 1942 this single 4d Swan was bought by the original Lord Vestey for the princely sum of £850 by Private Treaty from Robson Lowe. Nothing is truer than typing that rare and eye catching stamp pieces invariably go UP in price, whilst the junk settles to the bottom of the philatelic pond mud. The lovely Western Australia cover shown nearby I advertised in the Australian magazines in May and June 1982 for $A5,500, and it was bought by Lord Vestey, and was this month just sold by him. At that “stamp boom” time, the “smart money”

Most of the world’s supply! was buying truly scarce pieces like that. The Bunny Money was on lining up at Post Office buying First Day Covers and full sheets of the “RARE” 1982 Roses and Yachting PO new issues! I’d bought the cover for WAY less than that at Feldman’s Switzerland Auctions a few months earlier, when an Australia dealer was having a bit of ‘fire sale’ for various reasons. He probably netted half that for it. As chance had it, I had dinner with that same dealer a week after the Vestey sale, and when in town for Arthur Gray’s funeral, and nobly did not mention this recent bullish sale of it! However he recounted how he bought a half dozen of the huge Australia early £1 Booklets when they were auctioned in New York from the collection of the booklet doyen, Harriett Work, for around $US200 each, as “our booklets were dead back then”.

Complete £1 Victoria stamp booklet rarities, so in stamps there are very many “overs and unders” - you win some, you lose some! Several of those booklets - near unseen here for decades at that time, ended up in the Gold Medal Booklets collection of the late Arthur Gray. These very early £1 Booklets are MASSIVE. They are near the size of a Hagner sheet, and each contained 240 stamps. TWO complete sheets of 120 x 1d Kangaroos or 1d State stamps, or 1d KGV folded, each into 4 blocks of 30 - WITH all monograms etc! Indeed in the case of Tasmania, the huge 1d red Pictorial stamps were printed in sheets of 60, so FOUR complete sheets of 60 needed to be folded up, and stapled to inside cover of each book. Arthur Gray once kindly bought his Gold Medal

“Booklets” collection to my home, so that I could scan the covers in high resolution, so as the Stanley Gibbons catalogue could be updated in future with photos of many of the covers. Other than the examples Arthur owned, there were generally no other examples available to scan, as they are all incredibly rare. Collectors pre-war simply had no interest in stamp booklets it seems clear, despite rather large numbers being sold.

Never sighted by modern collectors.

Market Matters or collectors. Arthur Gray was keen they be shown more widely, to create interest in this neglected field, and I am keeping my word to him here. Before his sad passing Arthur said he would call me to outline more detail on these, as the “Booklets” ACSC 2nd Edition, is 12 years old now. Sadly that chat never took place and my account below is based on the ACSC, and Arthur’s album page scans I took. Both inner covers of these huge books had a ledger style ruled page with columns as you can see. Arthur told me they were bought mostly by small companies, and the clerk would note who used what of the 240 stamps. “Mr Smith x 10, Mr Jones x 17, Mr Brown x 22” etc. A complete and unique Victoria (2 sheets of 1d) £1 Booklet of the same massive size shows this well nearby. Glen Stephens examine each one. Usage in the early period was not great although Kellow records near 5,000 £1 x 1d stamp booklets were sold in Victoria alone during the years 1904/1905/1906. Only one survives today it seems, and for most States, no books or even covers survive. No 2d stamp booklets survive, although all states sold them in many 1000s of units total. Only one Queensland cover survives, that a Melbourne dealer foolishly added a sheet 120 of the wrong watermark 2d stamp inside, issued long after the books were made up in 1903. Production of these large booklets with 1d stamps between 1909 and 1912 was greater - Kellow records 57,407 of these huge books were prepared for all States, with each state’s stamps inside. Again sent only to those states. From 1913-1918 with the 2 sheets each of x 1d Kangaroos, and later 1d red KGV heads, sold around 74,000 x £1 of the Cooke and Harrison printing booklets of this huge size, yet only a tiny few covers or booklets survive. These being the first AUSTRALIAN stamp issues, they were distributed nationally, and it now seems only State GPO’s were on reverse and not state scenes. Whether SA got only Adelaide GPO back covers etc is not known.

Even an empty cover $10,000+

I have NO doubt examples of these booklets - perhaps the covers only, exist in company archives filed away, to record who used what stamps each month etc, and in old estates. Even a cover in good shape is worth $10,000+ I’d suggest, and some discoveries are certain yet to be made. These booklet updates are a work in progress at Gibbons, but many covers

have been added, right back to 1919, to what was shown before. There was nothing illustrated pre-war until recently in SG, and some more earlier ones are in the pipeline. Collectors have Arthur Gray to thank directly. The Stanley Gibbons Catalogue editor told me this week the “2015” Part 1 Australia section is now completed, but he will take a look at these again for next edition to try and add more photos. Arthur’s superb and unparalleled “Booklets” collection was entered into some future overseas Exhibitions prior to his passing, his very good friend Gary Brown from the APF told me at his wake. The first one will be at Singapore shortly, where it is expected to score a high level Gold medal, which seems to be normal for the superb Arthur Gray collections. I hope so – that would be a fitting farewell to a LEGEND of the hobby. Glen Stephens has written monthly ‘Stamp Tipster’ Columns for over 30 years - globally. Cinderella Corner

A bit light on for illustrations in this issue as I decided to list a lot of philatelic exhibitions that were held around the Sydney suburbs from 1951 to 1972 and a number of them did not have souvenir items although there were special postmarks. This column is also being prepared in early May as I will be away when the deadline comes around.

South Australia. (Fig. 1).

This item, (Fig. 1), was the subject of discussion on Stampboards for a while and finally I came in on the conversation. It does not have any connection to stamps issued by South Australia that either I or other knowledgeable students of South Australian philately know, however my suggestion is that it was probably a printers sample done in the hope of gaining a stamp printing or stamp engraving job. It is quite well executed, but not good enough to have come from an English company, so I think it could be a local Colonial production. As to date, well it could be 1885 when South Australia was legislating to introduce stamp duty and preparing the high value long stamps. As to who was responsible, that is yet to be established. I class it as something similar to the American Banknote Company issues.

Perth Commonwealth Games 1962. (Fig. 2).

Noel Almeida sent this item to me. It is one that neither he nor I have seen before and Bill Hornadge did not write it up during his time writing this column. It is a peel and stick type label and must have been a very early example of that type of label.

Sydney Philatelic Exhibitions.

This month I thought I would list some of the philatelic exhibitions held around Sydney in earlier years. I have extracted a lot of the information about these from Kennedy’s two volume set of books entitled Handbook of Australian and New Zealand Philatelic Exhibitions that was published by The Cinderella Stamp Club of Australia in 1988. I don’t have examples of these stamps or cachets but they are illustrated in the books.

Religion On Stamps Exhibition 1953.

One of the lesser known exhibitions was this specialised one entitled Religion on Stamps organised by the Strambian Philatelic Society held on April 18th in conjunction with the National Eucharistic Congress. There was no special postmark or souvenir label, but a special cachet was applied to souvenir covers.

by E.J. Gawthorne with 1,000 printed. The design was two images to a sheet with one being inverted in relation to the other, printed in blue and red or brown and green.

ANPEX 1959.

Held as part of the celebrations to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of Captain Cook’s discovery of Australia, this exhibition ran from April 27th to May 1st in the Sydney Town Hall. Stamp News conducted a stamp design competition in 1968 to seek designs for a stamp series that had been announced by the Post Office. The winning design by Richard Bates was produced as a miniature sheet and sold with the proceeds donated to assist with the costs of the exhibition.

Held from the 2 to 7 February in the Sydney Town Hall. There was a souvenir stamp issued that featured an Aborigine sending a smoke signal and an aeroplane overhead. It was designed by Colonel F.V. Thompson, printed by John Sands in sheets of 15 and rouletted nd

Royal Sydney Philatelic Club 70Th Anniversary.

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Club an exhibition was held at David Jones Art Gallery from June 19th to 30th 1961. There was a special post office but there is no record of any souvenir items although the One Shilling Colombo Plan stamp was issued during that time.

Georgepex 1962.

The St. George Philatelic Society celebrated their silver jubilee with an exhibition again at the Palais Grande, Rockdale, on September 22nd and 23rd 1962. A souvenir sheet featuring the Society logo was issued printed in red with some inscriptions in silver.

Rockdale 1964.

Organised by the Australasian Stamp Dealers Association, this exhibition was held on August 1st and 2nd at the Palais Grande, Rockdale. The souvenir item was a reproduction of the 1894 Coolgardie Cycle Express stamps in a miniature sheet backed on to a facsimile of the advertising card for the business. There was a re-enactment of the cycle express by the St. George Amateur Cycle Club.

Arncliffe 1967.

Again the St. George Philatelic Society was busy. This time celebrating their 30th anniversary with a two day show on November 18th and 19th in the Coronation Hall Arncliffe. A souvenir sheet was produced, designed

Sydney 1972.

The Philatelic Association of New South Wales organized an exhibition that was held at the Farmer’s Blaxland Gallery from May 8th to 15th. The displays included Australia Post Archival items. The souvenir item was a folder that had the current 7c Country Womens’ Association stamp attached and cancelled on the opening day with the special postmark of the exhibition.

Arncliffe 1972.

This exhibition was hosted by the St. George Philatelic Society. There was no souvenir item but mail was franked with a meter cancellation, the first time such a franking had been used at an exhibition.

Adelaide Scenes.

Remember those three stamps with Adelaide scenes from the May column? Well after asking around I finally got the picture postcard images that I referred to that had scenes in a similar style. The postcards are believed to have been printed by Vardon & Pritchard printers in Adelaide. One of the cards has correspondence on it that is dated September 1904 and since the scenes on the stamps are from a similar period, the horse trams being used as the guide, (Adelaide did not have electric trams until 1909), the stamps probably date from around 1904.
