At Boyd Dale/Lichtenstein (1990) it was Lot 109, realizing £660. Pairs are, of course, the optimal collecting unit for this stamp. Interestingly, the 1990 catalogue had an obviously cut-down Perf. 13 stamp (#110), dated 1864, four years after the disappearance of the imperforate printing. The imperforate left margin, and slightly more margin at right and at base may well have condemned the fabulous #6099 (Figure 3b) to the fate of Grandma’s scissors. Fortune smiled, however, and this unique item has remained intact. This beautiful marginal pair of Perf. 12 8d orange (SG 150, although it may be a red-orange – same value), with scrolling at left in a yellow shade, had a Starting price of SF5000 and realized AU$28,800. My selection as the greatest item of South Australia, #6234 (Figure 4), and one of the Top Two buys of the Sale. The remarkable and magnificent block of 21 of 1857 1/-, accurately described “. . . insignificant faults and one or two ironed bends . . . manuscript ‘Received 8/11/58’ removed from bottom row”. A couple of friends commented to me: 8 - Stamp News

When an item is the record multiple of a Classic stamp, by a factor of about seven, and is the subject the great Robson Lowe chose for the dust jacket for his seminal Australasia Encyclopaedia, a few blemishes are irrelevant. I sat through the Boker sale in London in 1981,

wishing I could have bid up the bargain price of just £8,500 for this famous item. I had to keep my powder dry for the outstanding Victoria yet to be offered, however. The Starting price in the Sale under review was SF10000, and the realization of AU$38,400 was extremely good value for money (compared with Figure 3 above, for example, at the same price). #6305 (Figure 5) was as nice an example of the Tasmania 1853 Plate II 4d Laid paper as one is likely to encounter. More often than not they are cut-to-shape, and emanate from Proof sheets, not known to have been pressed in to postal service. SG Cat £10,000, Starting price SF3500, I didn’t think the realized AU$10,480 was too much to pay.

#6370 (Figure 6) is the other of my Top Two selections as the best buys in the sale (see also Figure 4). Starting price SF30000, it realized AU$89,000. Expectation among my peers

and self was more like AU$150,000. This amazing block of six of Victoria’s first stamp was regarded by J.R.W. Purves (author of the original Half-length volume) as the greatest item of the Colony extant. Geoff Kellow, in his Stamps of Victoria, described it as “the greatest Victoria piece [sic] extant”. I couldn’t agree more. Consider there are around just 150 examples of this stamp in existence (about the same as Canada’s 12d Black), mostly as singles and pairs, and a strip of three, the magnitude of this remarkable item becomes clearly apparent. Rarity and beauty are seldom as evident in Philately as they are in this block. Ex Pack, I bought it in the Boker sale (1981) for £22,000 (then AU$37,400). It was nearly mine for £6,500, which would have been the bargain of the Sale, when a Nigerian gentleman took the bidding to the hammer price. I believe his money was legitimately obtained. Incidentally, my maximum bid was £50,000.

A truly superb example of an 1854 Campbell printing (SG 19), this was a mint stamp with most of its original gum, rather than uncancelled/unused (see comment under Figure 1). SG Cat £600 is light on for a stamp of this calibre. Starting price SF150, realization was a respectable AU$1760. The vendor had purchased it from me for AU$665 in 1990. Fair to say the col-

the very few “bloopers” in the Sale. A case, it appears, of the vendor not having fully transferred the details of the item after purchase. This was a Ham printing (SG 7 – Cat £4,750), rather than the more

lector was more a stamps-on-cover aficionado, than a pure Postal history buff, so #6387 (Figure 8) was perhaps a departure from the norm. The convergence of a Barred Oval cancel (“36” of Bacchus Marsh) and Butterfly “14” (in orange) on cover, as a Departmental receipt marking, is rare. The cover was missing side flaps, but that didn’t stop it gracing the famous Pack and Boyd Dale/Lichtenstein collections. The vendor had bought it in the latter Sale for £209. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve observed and mentioned above that mint/ unused singles are heavily in demand at present, probably more so than I can recall in my nearing 50 years of studying the Australian Colonial market. I put this down to the Cult of Gap-filling, where collectors feel compelled to fill every space, rather than seeking out the optimal item for that space. Some strange aberrations have been noted over recent years, where I have occasionally witnessed an average quality single selling for a greater sum than a block of the same. #6436 (Figure 12) is believed to be the only surviving multiple of the 1866 Beaded Oval 3d maroon (SG 91 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Cat ÂŁ400). This is a very available stamp mint/unused, yet I have seen a high percentage of catalogue paid for singles. This is a superb block, virtually in Post Office condition, yet it managed just AU$3,040. It ought to be worth 10

Touched upon under Figure 10 above, #6447 (Figure 13) is another example of just how outof-favour even incredibly rare Essays/Proofs are presently. If I were collecting an Australian Colony, I would be taking notice of the value to be had in this type of material, particularly in comparison with mint/unused singles, which I generally regard as the antithesis of value. The Smart Money appears to be absent when it comes to Essays/Proofs. Here a pair of rarities, Starting price SF350, sold for just AU$670. They were selling for more than that three decades ago. #6448 (Figure 14) I’ve always regarded as a very available stamp mint/unused. Of this 1884 Stamp Statute 3d, when I mounted-up my Victoria collection (1980) I had 40 mint/unused, 2 postally used (they Cat £500 against £1,800 for mint/

unused!), and 3 David Hill prepared covers. Puzzled I am, therefore, why this less than superb example (“trace of aging on top two perforations”) should realize AU$4,160? I could understand that level for a sound, postally used example. Heck, I doubt that even a rare Hill cover would fetch that sum? #6456 (Figure 15) is the record multiple for the 1885 STAMP DUTY overprint on 3d. Another good example of blocks fetching considerably less pro rata than does ordinary singles. I managed just a block of four (ex Harvey). It was exceptional value for AU$960 (Starting price SF150). The unfortunate honour for worst value for money in the collection, according to my colleagues (and I) appears to have been “awarded” to #6459/C (Figure 16 for £9 from group). In the early 1980s I purchased this group, and the £25, £50 and £100 unused, all with American Philatelic Association certificates, from a New York Trader. That vendor also had the £5 originally, but was able to sell this in the

(couldn’t help myself), and had plenty of Specimen/CTO material. By the time I had met our subject collector, I had sold the APS-certified £25-£100, but he wanted the bicolour group now featured, despite my advice. He paid AU$9,000, which it transpires was a shrewd purchase: they realized AU$96,000 in his Sale. Perhaps the new owner will also do well? #6463 (Figure 17) is a superb example of W.A. 1854 1d rouletted, ex Gartner. The rouletted version is probably more than 10 times scarcer than the imperforate, but the differential is seldom reflected in prices realized. I thought this obviously genuine example was good value for AU$670 (Starting price SF250). The Slate-blue shade (SG 3c) of the WA 1854 4d is distinctive and desirable, so #6486 (Figure 18) appeared good value at AU$1,120, given it is a fine example, and with SG Cat of £1,300. Attractive, full-margined examples of

U.S., for that denomination is catalogued in Scott, whereas the £6-£9 denominations are unlisted. Despite the certificates, I believed then, and continue to believe that these stamps are used but uncancelled, sweated-off Land Titles Office transfer documents, by some enterprising staff member, many decades ago. The policy at that Office was to cancel the stamps with pen and ink, or by handstamp, but occasionally the practice was inadvertently overlooked. As a collector, I was not overly fond of Victorian Postal Fiscals of denominations £5 and above. Yes, they were valid for postage for a certain period, but as none are known genuine, postally used, I relegated them to the class of Revenues, which I did not collect. The ACSC of course prices postal used at much more than CTO - ACSC $500 - 80% higher than CTO. These were printed essentially on very coarse blotting paper, and they thin and crease and scuff readily, from the heavy parcel use. And the thick huge oval rubber Melbourne Parcel Office cancels mostly found are often HORRIFIC! Clean and flat and fresh, totally free of hinges and gook, with neat dated BALLARAT Vic cds of “2 - AU - 32”. As nice as you’ll find offered anywhere for POSTAL used, with good centering as you can see. GB FDC 20 year run. Cat £1,500 for $A400!

20 years of GB FDCs x 485 - 1976 to 1996, all official Royal Mail - FACE alone is £503! 2 different cancels where applicable, and where offered by Royal Mail, so a totally "all different" run. SG cat is average 3 x face for FDC or used, as can readily be seen in a SG “Concise” = £1,500 cat. Nice looking lot overall. Estate lot I bought cheap today - great buy at just $A400. Complete sets, strips, mini sheets, and high values. Royal Mail of course used a machine to add addresses in this era to all FDC, according to strict regulations. The Deceased had an account with Royal Mail, and most of these were still in the sealed outers envelopes from Royal Mail Edinburgh - those he had never opened, and never been in mail, and hence clean and fresh.  Took me an hour to take them all out of the outers, and another 2 hours to add face value! These cost him WAY over £500 from Royal Mail, and is this era that was about $1,250 actual cost due to strong Sterling. Sterling was up to $A2.5 to 1 then. Brilliant and cheap lot for someone looking for an instant collection of FDC - or Fine Used. TOTALLY untouched by me - as usual - exactly as purchased from estate. Some top end goodies all here, as you can see. Gotta be a goldmine for an ebay seller on a free listing month etc? You are paying WAY under $A1 a cover, for things that often sell for $10. British Solomon Islands 1907 Large War Canoe 2½d Orange Yellow, very fresh pair, IMPERF AT RIGHT: One the classic British Pacific stamp issues, with a true global following. The debut issue, crudely local designed, and primitively produced, these are far better than usual - clean and fresh, bright deep colour, with white MLH original gum. Been in Europe near all their life – luckily, as out here they fox badly. SG 4b is cat £12,000 - the imperf between pair of this value. One sheet of those were recorded, and one sheet with imperf at side. Only a few pairs exist globally. Reported at www.abc.net.au Margo’s note: Thanks to Kevin for forwarding this story An Indigenous artist from the remote APY Lands in South Australia* is using his fame to push his political message about land rights to a wider audience. Mumu Mike Williams has gained notoriety for his subversive use of Australia Post canvas mailbags. Mr Williams’ work contains images and words, both in English and his native Pitjantjatjara to make powerful statements about Indigenous land ownership. He painted onto canvas mailbags from Australian Post, ignoring the warning stamped on each bag: “Theft or misuse of this bag is a criminal offence — penalties apply.” Instead, he scrawled words in Pitjantjatjara and concentric circles representing rock holes across each bag. It’s a warning to government about how it deals

with Indigenous people, he said, following the 2014 decision by the South Australian Government to change legislation to allow it to dismiss elected representatives. “They make changes to try to take over… they want to be boss, not Aboriginals. But Aboriginals say we are the boss.” Those living on the APY Lands know better than most about the consequences of losing control of it. The British nuclear tests at Maralinga and Emu Field were done on the APY Lands without any consultation with Indigenous people. Australia’s art scene is taking note of Mr Williams’s message; earlier this year, he won the inaugural Footscray Art Prize, he’s a finalist in this year’s Wynne Prize and his first solo show in Melbourne, was a sell-out. * Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) is incorporated by the 1981 Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights Act whereby the South Australian Parliament gave Aboriginal people title to more than 103,000 square kilometres of arid land in the far northwest of South Australia.

Passport to Pyongyang

Then the good news is that you can purchase your very own on eBay for a mere $US 25.99 and get a sheetlet of stamps thrown in. It is hard to verify but it appears that this year North Korea is promoting a novelty passport for tourists – apparently only 1000 sets have been issued (which will no doubt cover all western tourists visiting in 2017). The ‘passport’ is inscribed as follows: The tourists who visit the DPRK can have souvenir cancellations stamped into this tour passport at various scenic spots and possess it as a collectible with different souvenir stamps.

Halifax disaster centenary commemorated Reported at www.canadapost.ca

Canada Post has issued a stamp commemorating the devastating explosion that rocked Halifax on the morning of December 6, 1917, when two ships – one loaded with explosives – collided in the narrows leading to its harbour. The issue also salutes the resilience of the Haligonians who rebuilt their city from the ashes. “With this stamp, Canada Post remembers those whose lives were lost or forever changed in this terrible incident,” says Deepak Chopra, CEO of Canada Post. The stamp captures the moments before and after the disaster through elements from the past and present. Since few photos exist of the doomed ships just before the accident, local illustrator Mike Little recreated the scene based on historic accounts and materials. Halifax was a bustling port supplying Canada’s efforts in the First World War in 1917. The blast occurred when a fire detonated munitions aboard the French ship Mont-Blanc after it struck the Imo, a Norwegian cargo ship. The largest human-made explosion in history, prior to the detonation of the first atomic bomb. It claimed the lives of nearly 2,000 people, injured 9,000 more, and damaged property worth millions of dollars.

Titanic result

Reported at www.bbc.com/news One of the last known letters to have been written on the Titanic has sold for a world record price at auction. The letter, written by American businessman and Titanic passenger, Oscar Holverson, fetched £126,000. It was sought-after because he wrote it on 13 April 1912 - the day before the Belfast-built ship hit an iceberg. It is the only known letter, on headed Titanic

notepaper, to have gone into the Atlantic and survived. The sea-water stained document was sold to a British buyer, whose bid to the auction in Wiltshire came in via phone. Mr Holverson, a successful salesman, wrote the letter to his mother while travelling on the ill-fated ship with his wife, Mary. In it he told his mother that “the boat is giant in size and fitted up like a palatial hotel”. H also wrote about seeing “the richest person in the world at that time” - John Jacob Astor - on the ship, accompanied by his wife. “He looks like any other human being even tho (sic) he has millions of money,” he adds. “They sit out on deck with the rest of us.” When the Titanic sank, Oscar Holverson, along with JJ Astor, died along with more than 1,500 people. Mary Holverson survived. Her husband’s body was recovered and, inside a pocket book, the letter was found. It still bears the stains of the sea water and the water mark of the White Star shipping line. The letter eventually made its way back to his mother making it possibly, the only onboard letter written by a victim that was delivered to its recipient without postage.

The letter had a reserve price of between £60,000 and £80,000. The previous world record for a Titanic letter sold at auction was £119,000, set in April 2014, for a letter written a few hours before the ship hit the iceberg.

The ice boat cometh

Reported at www.cbc.ca Margo’s note: Thanks to Stampboards member Norvic for forwarding this story There is renewed excitement in the community of Cape Traverse, Prince Edward Island, Canada, thanks to an event that happened more than 100 years ago. That’s when last ice boat, which carried mail, supplies and passengers from the mainland, crossed the Northumberland Strait to Cape Traverse. “Cape Traverse was the hub of P.E.I. Everything that came or left P.E.I. mostly came in through Cape Traverse, especially in the winter time,” said Andrew MacKay, whose home has a view of the Cape Traverse beach where the boats once came in. The ice boats operated on the Northumberland Strait from 1827 until 1917. There were times they were stranded on the ice for days at a time. “You just look across there and you can feel the history. So many people endured those hardships, making that trek across the strait to bring the mail and supplies.”

“When we found out the exact date of the last crossing, we thought, ‘jeepers, we need to do something here to commemorate this,’” said MacKay, who quickly formed a committee with a few neighbours. The community wants to make the Ice Boat Festival an annual event. But it’s not stopping there. It would like to see Canada Post honour the ice boats, perhaps with a commemorative stamp or coin. Ice boats were the only way that the Royal Mail, as it was called at the time, came back and forth from the mainland. Locals have heard stories about how strongly the ice boat crews felt about the responsibility of carrying the mail.“Even when they were stranded out on the ice for days, they refused to burn the mail to keep themselves warm,” MacKay said. “In the final few months, one man slipped out of the leather strap and slipped under the ice before anyone realized it was too late.”

There is a rundown shop near the Rue des Martyrs that never seems to close. Late into the night a small group of older men bend over a long table, moving around thousands of tiny bits of coloured paper with their tiny tweezers. It goes by the name Action Philatélie — Action Philately — and has been in business for as long as anyone can remember. Since 1986, Raphaël Stern, a former teacher of history and English, has owned and managed the shop. Organized chaos reigns. But Mr. Stern knows where to find any stamp you want. Paris is still a city of stamp lovers. An estimated two million people in France have private postage stamp collections, according to the French Association of Dealers and Experts in Philately. will host its 71st annual Philatelic Salon that will bring vendors and collectors together from France and around the world. An area on the Right Bank’s Ninth Arrondissement is the city’s stamp district. About 30 stamp shops line the Rue Drouot near the Hôtel Drouot, one of the world’s oldest auction houses. The French Association of Dealers and Experts in Philately, a private association with 180 members, has its headquarters here. Several more stamp shops are in the Passage des Panoramas and then there is the open-air stamp market at the Carré Marigny. Since the 1860s, when a rich stamp collector gave the space to the city of Paris for the express purpose of buying and selling stamps, merchants have done just that. Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn made the stamp market famous for American audiences in the 1963 romantic thriller, “Charade.” It has to be the best postage stamp movie ever made. tinue to set up their small portable stalls for the thrice-weekly market, selling postcards and old letters as well as stamps. For Michèle Peiny, a retired accountant who opened her stall 12 years ago, the stamp market is less a way to make money than to see friends. “I open when the weather is nice, and when I know my friends will be here,” she said. In the 15 years he has run a stall here, he has witnessed the market’s decline. “Some merchants have retired, some have died,” he said. “Few of us are left. The internet has cut into the business of retail stamp merchants, but not destroyed it. “You can see something very beautiful on your computer screen, but you can’t turn it over to see if there’s a defect on the other side,” said François Farcigny, president of the French Association.

Hidden within a tree hollow in Berkeley California is a lilliputian post office that services wanderers looking for a whimsical exchange.

Tucked away in a woodland hollow on a path in Orinda’s Tilden Park is a tiny postal station that looks like it was built by a fairy bureaucrat, and which regularly receives letters from hikers and children wanting to communicate with the creatures of the forest. Installed in December of 2013 in a tree at a fork on the park’s Curran Trail, the post office was not expected to last very long. It originally consisted of a miniature mailbox in front of a pint-sized office complete with desk, lamp, a thimble-sized birdcage, and tasteful art on the wall. It looked for all intents and purposes as though a studious squirrel had set up shop in the tree. The creators of the post office left little letters in the mailbox and after a couple of months simply left the whole thing to exist in secret. Much to their delight, when they returned to the spot six months later, they found that instead of deteriorating , the post office had seemed to expand! Wanderers who had stumbled upon the post office had added decorations, like miniature wall maps and trinkets on the desk; new notes had even been written and left in the mailbox. Soon the creators were regularly checking the mail and having whimsical exchanges with unknown recipients who wrote letters to fairies and field mice. The tiny post office still sits in the tree to this day, providing a sense of wonder for all those lucky enough to find this postal knothole.

In 1500, a Portuguese sea captain, Pêro de Ataíde,

lost much of his fleet in a storm off the Southern Cape. Before returning to India, he wrote a message reporting the damage and warning of rough waters to the East. Ataíde tucked the message in a boot dangling from a milkwood tree near a spring where sailors often drew water. Miraculously, the message was retrieved by its intended recipient, Joao de Nova, the very next year. The tree became a de facto post office box, where sailors would exchange letters protected in boots, iron pots, or beneath rocks. Seamen would leave their messages behind, trusting that their countrymen would pick them up and deliver them to their correct destination, albeit very slowly. Stamp News - 23

A large post office box shaped like a giant boot has been constructed beneath the tree, where people can send letters anywhere in the world and receive a special stamp. The tree is located in the Bartholomeu Dias Museum Complex located in Mossel Bay, Western Cape Province.

Postal big data – in the form of billions of electronic data records generated by the physical movement of mail across borders – can shed an important light on the socio-economic wellbeing of countries, especially in those where data from digital networks is not available. Using 14 million postal records from 187 countries, researchers demonstrated that this network of connections can provide indicators that are closely correlated to standard indicators of socio-economic status. The study undertaken by Cambridge University had unparalleled access to the tracking data held by the UPU on postal flows, a rich source of records of human activity with extraordinary penetration in the

physical world. The records themselves are generated each time a postal dispatch occurs between countries. Four years of daily postal data from 187 countries (2010-2014) were explored and its network properties shown to approximate critical socio-economic indicators. The data revealed that since 2010 postal activity is on the rise, which can be accounted for by the parallel growth of global e-commerce. This positions postal flows as a sustainable indicator of socioeconomic activity. The study identified that the indicators of life expectancy and GDP per capita were strongly correlated with the postal degree of a country. The use of big data for development is a burgeoning area of research that could help countries measure and monitor their progress. However, big data can have limitations in coverage, particularly in countries where digital penetration and use of social media is low. This is where the contribution of UPU data from the global physical postal network can play a critical role. “Physical networks, like the global postal, flight and migration networks, are critical variables to build robust socioeconomic indicators in combination with new digital networks, such as internet traffic and social media use,” said Miguel LuengoOroz, Chief Data Scientist at UN Global Pulse.

1901 British New Guinea 1/- Lakatoi stamp DIE proofs:

Bought in Germany from a high end source, and lovely and clean and fresh, with none of the usual foxing found out here. The 1901 BNG set was printed by De La Rue in London, and they were well-known for ranges of proof emissions of their stamp issues. Real intaglio raised print Die Proofs, with strong metal plate "bite" crisp impressions on reverse. The outer Frame, the central vignette, and the completed design in 3 proofs. On unwatermarked wove, quality paper, with light printer red pencil guide marks on 2 far outers, and light crease on vignette proof, that will doubtless press out easily. The only other set of these I can see offered was from Cherrystone Auctions in the USA, way back in January 2005, (also with bend on Vignette proof ) where they sold after much bidding for $US1,450 hammer + 15% Buyer Fee = $US1,667, or $A2,150 - 13 years back - see tinyurl.com/LakProofs for detail. Postal Stationery Welcome to the first postal stationery column for 2018. I wish all readers a happy and prosperous year. Certainly, for postal stationery collectors there will be many occasions to view postal stationery exhibits in 2018, including 2018 Newcastle Stamp & Coin Expo 25-27 May 2018, Armistice Stamp Show 2018 at Dunedin 9-11 November 2018 and internationally at Macao 2018 in September and Thailand 2018 at Bangkok in late November. This month’s column looks at New Year postal stationery, recent and forthcoming meetings of the Postal Stationery Society of Figure 1 New South Wales 1898 1d Postcard Australia and new issues from Australia Post.

New Year Postal Stationery

Postal Stationery issued to mark New Year has a long history, especially here in Australia. New Year prepaid postcards with views on the reverse were issued by New South Wales in November-December 1898. 1d (Figure 1) and 1½d (for overseas use) postcards were issued with fifteen different views used on the 1d value and ten different views used on the 1½d postcards. fice holds the cards and delivers them on 1 January. The first New Year postcards were issued in November 1949 for use for the 1950 New Year in denominations of 2 yen and 2 + 1 yen. The stamp designs featured a stylised stork (Figure 3). Figure 4 shows a Japanese New Year card for 2018. The stamped postcards also double as lottery tickets with the winning numbers being announced in January. Postal Stationery commemorative stamps (3rd prize, last two numbers). Many countries, including Australia, issue postal stationery to mark the Lunar New Year. Australia has issued three postal stationery items each year since 1995, a prepaid postcard and two stamped envelopes, one for domestic issue and other for overseas use. The 1995 postcard and envelopes had designs marking the Year of the Ox (Figure 5 and 6) and later issues also reflected the Chinese calendar with 2017 being the Year of the Rooster. Figure 7 Â Canada 2016 Prepaid Postcard for the Year of the Monkey Canada has issued prepaid postcards for the Lunar New Year since 2004 when two prepaid postcards, one for domestic use and one for international use, were issued to mark the Year of the Monkey. Figure 7 shows a postcard for 2016 Year of the Monkey. Lunar new year cards have also been issued by countries such as China and Hong Kong. Figure 8 shows a postcard issued by Hong Kong in 2002 for the Year of the Horse. China has issued New Year stamped postcards since 1982 with many of these cards also serving as lottery tickets. The 2017 national postal stationery competition for Australia and New Zealand took place at Royalpex 2017, a New Zealand Specialised National Stamp Exhibition held from 24 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 26 November 2017 at the Distinction Hotel, Te Rapa, Hamilton. New Zealand. There were nine exhibits in the competition with three exhibits receiving Large Gold medals; New Zealand Postal Stationery 1876-1940 (Steve Schumann), British Guiana (Bernard Beston) and Postal Stationery of Natal (Gary Brown); and one exhibit receiving a receiving a Gold medal; Post Bands and Wrappers of Canada (Ian McMahon). Other exhibits included Postal and Lettercard Development in the AustroHungarian Empire (Tony Griffin), Department of Education postcards of New Zealand (Lionel Savins), Great Britain Registered Postal Stationery 1778-1923 (Alistair Gow) and Siamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Postal Cards (Glen Stafford) all of which received a Large Vermeil medal as well as India: Asoka Stationery which received a Vermeil medal. There was also a postal stationery exhibit, Australian 7c Magenta Pre-Stamped Envelope Usage (Peter Tozer), in the Adult Development Class. twenty people. Lindsay Chitty displayed his New Zealand Prisoner of War airmail lettercards and postcards while Norman Banfield gave a presentation on Australian King George VI postal stationery. Recycling Logo and Satchels

Australia Post has adopted Planet Ark’s Australian Recycling Label (ARL) on its plastic Parcel Post and Express Post satchels (Figure 16). Reprints of the satchels with the ARL logo have now been issued. The ARL logo indicates the satchel’s recyclability with satchels being able to be recycled using a special shipping label. Australia Post states that: The logo will make it easier for all Australians to recycle our range of packaging, regardless of their location and kerbside recycling processes, helping to increase the correct disposal of packaging material and optimising the recycling of product that might otherwise go to landfill. 25th Anniversary of the International Day of People with Disability Stamped Envelope

A postage paid envelope (selling for $1.25) was issued on 14 November 2017 to recognise the 25th Anniversary of the International Day of People with Disability (Figure 17). A version of this envelope was issued as a postal numismatic cover with a 20c coin produced by the Royal Australian Mint and sold cancelled for $17.95 (Figure 18). This envelope differed in being a ‘lick and stick’ envelope as well having different text on the Figure 18 25th Anniversary of the International Day of People with Disability reverse and a hole for the coin. Looking at New Zealand Campbell Island, Part 2 Only four datestamp cancellers were used on Campbell Island during the 43 years that the Meteorological Station was staffed. Mark Jurisich has established definitive dates of use for each canceller from New Zealand Post archives. The first one was used from 1 September 1952 to 22 December 1974 and is shown here (Fig. 1) on the back of a cover signed by all the 1959-60 team. The datestamp has a diameter of 34mm. The second canceller, which was 33mm in diameter, was used from 24 January 1975 to 23 November 1981. It is shown here on its first day of use (Fig. 2). The third canceller, also 33mm in diameter, was used from 17

British nuclear tests at Maralinga occurred between 1956 and 1963 at the Maralinga site, part of the Woomera Prohibited Area in South Australia and about 800 kilometres north-west of Adelaide. A total of seven nuclear tests were performed, with approximate yields ranging from 1 to 27 kilotonnes of TNT (4.2 to 113.0 TJ). Two major test series were conducted at the Maralinga site: Operation Buffalo and Operation Antler. The site was also used for hundreds of minor trials, many of which were intended to investigate the effects of fire or non-nuclear explosions on atomic weapons. Amazing survivor! Price $49

The example shown as Fig. 3 was carried by the supply ship MFV Daniel Solander (pictured in Fig. 4) which was used on a number of voyages from 1985 to 1991. I do not own an example of the fourth canceller yet but have copied the illustration from Mark Jurisich’s book (Fig. 5). It was in use from 10 October 1989 until the Meteorological Station’s close on 15 October 1995. It was 30mm in diameter. Finally, in Fig. 6, is an example of a postmarking error by then team leader (and thus honorary post-

master) George Poppleton. He first dated the cancellations ‘33 NO 59’, changed this to ‘3 NO 59’ and finally hand-corrected it to ‘3 NO 60’. Cinderella Corner Welcome to the first Cinderella Corner for 2018. This year promises to be an exciting period of time to explore the growing range of cinderellas and build further breadth into what is already known about them. As per several previous editions in 2016 and 2017, I will explore and concentrate on one area of cinderella philately in this issue and several others throughout the course of the year. For well over a century, philatelic societies and organisations have existed and thrived throughout Australia and across the rest of the world. Some of these hold memberships from individuals that celebrate very particular avenues of interest, such as historical postcards originating from a region of the world, whereas others broaden their focus to consider all philatelic matters, such as the Royal Philatelic Society of Victoria, which celebrates 125 years of service last year. Their existences hinge on membership, and many societies have produced their own cinderella labels and poster stamps to advertise their efforts, encourage individuals to join, and celebrate various milestones. Some of

Figure 1 these groups, in fact, are devoted solely to discussing and expanding the knowledge of cinderellas and revenue stamps, including the Cinderella Stamp Club of Australasia, which has existed for more than 30 years. This January issue of Cinderella Corner explores some of these labels created by philatelic societies from around the world. It is by no means an exhaustive (nor comprehensive) illustration of them. And, given the very nature of this column, some emphasis is placed on cinderella clubs producing and distributing their own cinderellas. These labels are a sort of natural extension to those produced by Australian philatelic dealers and traders, which was the subject of the article from last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s July Cinderella Corner issue. It therefore helps build the narrative of cinderella labels, and also ascertain their firm place in philately.

The Cinderella Stamp Club (CSC) is the largest and most successful cinderella-based philatelic society in the world. It was founded in June 1959 (the very same year that Cinderella Corner initia-

tor, Bill Hornadge, started Stamp News Australasia) and, nearly 60 years later, remains a goliath in its field. Based in the UK, the club welcomes philatelist membership interested in a range of areas, including revenues, Red Cross labels, bogus and fantasy stamps, registration labels and charity seals. To mark various milestones reached by the CSC, members designed and produced several cinderellas. Some of these are now illustrated. Figure 1 shows a label issued in 1980

to commemorate the club’s 21st anniversary. The label, coloured in red and white, measures 53mm by 39mm and bears the text: CINDERELLA STAMP CLUB: 1959 – 1980 21ST ANNIVERSARY. DOCKWRA’S POST TERCENTENARY – PENNY POST PAID. Dockwra’s post, as mentioned on the cinderella, refers to a private postal service that covered London and surrounds commencing in 1680, 300 years before the formation of the CSC. Its founder, English merchant William Dockwra, utilised an early triangular Penny Post Paid marking on its items, which is also reproduced on the 1980 CSC label. The cinderella was offered free to members and also made its way to other cinderella enthusiasts. Figure 2 presents a sheet issued by the CSC, nine years later in 1989, to commemorate the club’s 30th year of formation. This detailed and fascinating item, with its textual-rich margins, banners the heading: JOIN THE CINDERELLA CLUB and, at the base, gives a list of the different collecting interests of its members, along with costs and membership benefits. Each of the individual labels on the sheet measures 191mm by 178mm and illustrates the 19th Philatelic Congress of Great Britain, held in Brighton from June 13 to 17, 1932. Cinderella Corner can be observed in Figure 2. It was also available in other colours. The sheet, in its entirety of 12 labels and intact margins, is rather scarce. Figure 3 highlights a third and most recent effort of the CSC, nearly 30 years after the 1980 label. Produced in 2009, it measures 29mm by 20mm, is coloured gold, yellow and green, and is perforated 11 on all sides. The text on the label reads: 1959 – 2009 alongside the initials CSC and the number 50. Along with this label, a second unissued colour arrangement of the label was produced and is illustrated in Figure 4. The labels herald a milestone for the society and a triumphant mark in cinderella philately.

The colourful and patriotic-rich label illustrated in Figure 5, complete with American motifs including parts of the Statue of Liberty, the American Flag, and USA-coloured rainbow, measures 41mm by 39mm and is multi-coloured. It was produced by Poster Stamp Bulletin Editor and cinderella expert Walter Schmidt. Walter, now in his late 80s and still active in his field, has written some key texts in the area of cinderellas including the famed 1980s publication Images of the Great War: An Illustrated Catalogue of Delandre’s Non-French Military Vignettes 1914 – 1917.

Poster Stamp Societies

There are several poster stamp societies commissioned with the task of creating (and also endorsing) poster stamps and cinderella labels for different worldwide organisations. The National Poster Stamp Society, who published an earlier version of Walter Schmidt’s Poster Stamp Bulletin from 1936 to 1951, along with the International Poster Stamp Society, were two such bodies. The labels that they produced are well documented and most are not too scarce for collectors to pursue. The societies also produced their own advertising labels as a means of self- promoFigure 8

Figure 9 tion. Figure 6 illustrates one for the National Poster Stamp Society, featuring the organisation’s circular logo. It is multi-coloured, measures 46mm by 58mm, and is perforated 12 ½ on the top and bottom. Figure 7 illustrates one for the International Poster Stamp Society. It is coloured blue and black, is imperforate on all sides, and measures 48mm by 63mm. The label shows a globe of the earth with the additional text: THE POSTER STAMP EXCHANGE PSEX. Alongside the black shade, this label was also issued in three other colours: pink, green, or orange. A larger version of this poster stamp, measuring 59mm by 86mm, is illustrated in Figure 8. It is coloured deep blue and gold.

therefore produced in the early years of the ASDA’s now century-old history as a means of promoting the society. This is of signiﬁcance and interest towards better understanding the relationship between philatelic traders and cinderellas, given the correspondence from the ASDA to an international stamp dealer. The label is not particularly scarce but a great addition to any poster stamp collection. The cinderella labels explored in this Cinderella Corner edition, as aforementioned, offer only a glimpse into the many issued by philatelic organisations, along with their wider afﬁliations. I welcome any other interesting ones that readers may have to share. These could gladly feature in future 2018 issues.

American Stamp Dealers Association Inc.

There are many cinderellas issued by philatelic organisations and plenty feature in catalogues and articles. Purely for the point of illustration, I have decided to highlight one of my favourites. This label, featured in Figure 9, bears the text: THE AMERICAN STAMP DEALERS ASSOCIATION INC. in front of the visage of an American Indian. The label measure 46mm by 33mm, is coloured grey and white and is perforated 11 on all sides. The cinderella is afﬁxed to the rear of a cover postmarked 1922 and addressed to prominent philatelic trader A. H. Davis in Birmingham, England. And, as the printed address details on the ﬂap, it was sent by W. F. Slusser – Secretary-Treasurer A. S. D. A. – USA. Formed in 1914, the ASDA promotes philately and helps recognise and celebrate the efforts of philatelic dealers and traders. The label was Stamp News - 51

Why not collect TAjikistan? It is doubtful if the stamps of the Central Asian state of Tajikistan have attracted the attention of worldwide collectors to any greater degree. It is an ancient country located just north of Afghanistan. The Tajik currency unit is the somoni which derives its name from Ismail Somoni (849-907) who is considered to be the faounding father of the Tajik nation. From a linguistic point of view, the Tajik language is very similar to Persian. Historically the cities of Bukhara and Samarkand have been the main centres of Tajik cultural and spiritual life. Today these cities are located in the neighbouring republic of Uzbekistan. There are quite a few Tajik stamp issues featuring personalities from the country’s glorious past. Fig 1 shows Ali Hamadani (1314-1385), a famous poet and Muslim theologian who is buried at Khatlan in Tajikistan. Tajikistan is very much a mountainous country with the highest peak reaching 7.495 metres. The climate is distinctly continental with very hot summers and cold winters. Typical mountain scenery is depicted on Fig 2. When the Soviet Union began taking an interest

in the Central Asian region the Tajiks rejected the Russian advances. It was only in 1929 that the Tajik Soviet Republic was created. The area had previously been included in Uzbekistan. It was Soviet leader Stalin who decided to let parts of the Tajik territories remain in Uzbekistan as some sort of punishment. Russians and Uzbeks were encouraged to settle in Tajikistan. Today the country has a population of some 8.7 million people with the majority being Tajiks but there is also a 25 percent minority of Uzbeks. From a religious point of view Islam is the dominating religion in the country. Fig 3 shows the impressive Sheikh Muslihiddin Mosque in Chudzjand, the country’s second largest city. Many of the old ethnic and political conﬂicts resurfaced when Tajikistan became an independent republic in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. The following year a civil war broke out. It lasted until 1997 and claimed an estimated 50.000 lives. During the Soviet era Tajikistan was the republic with the lowest standard of living in the entire union. The long civil war in the 1990s certainly didn’t help to improve the situation. Agriculture remains the

Christer Brunström main economic activity and the industrial sector is still poorly developed. Tajikistan has a very large foreign debt which of course hinders economic development. Fig 4 shows the Tajik national ﬂag superimposed on a map of the country. A traditional Tajik art pattern is depicted on Fig 5. Tajikistan is the preferred country of transit for the huge quantities of drugs which are smuggled from Afghanistan to the Russian Federation. Presumably the extensive corruption helps facilitate this illegal trade. Transparency International lists Tajikistan as number 151 in its listing of perceived corruptive practices in the countries of the world. At number 175, the bottom position, we ﬁnd Somalia. The Nordic nations occupy the top positions in this ranking which tells a lot about civil rights, religious freedom and other rights that the vast majority of the readers of this magazine take for granted and which to a large degree are not available for the people of Tajikistan. Sadly corruption on all levels is present in most of the former Central Asian Soviet republics. It was in 1991 that Tajikistan joined the ranks of stamp-issuing nations after having previously used Russian or Soviet postage stamps. In the early years

of postal independence a number of Soviet definitive stamps were overprinted and surcharged with new values to be used as Tajik postage stamps. One example is shown in Fig 6. The capital city of Tajikistan is Dushanbe where there is a philatelic bureau operated by the Tajik Postal Service. Since the country achieved independence in 1991 it has released more than 1.200 stamps and 40 souvenir sheets which I suppose is quite reasonable for a period of more than a quarter century. Leafing through my catalogue I notice many issues featuring the country, its history, its cultural heritage, its famous sons and daughters and the usual output of popular thematic stamps. Shown in Fig 7 is a snow leopard. Fortunately most issues are inexpensive but I imagine it can be difficult to locate them. Sadly Tajikistan has also been the target for those people who produce illegal stamps, i.e. stamps which look like real Tajik issues but which have not been released by the country’s postal service. These illegal stamps are generally printed in small sheet format (frequently 4, 6 or nine stamps in each sheet) featuring the most popular stamp topics of the day.

Market Matters New NSW Numeral Postmark Catalogue.

I am pleased to review for the first time anywhere, the superb new book - “Numeral Cancellations of New South Wales” by Hugh Freeman. This is a large and very heavy 2kg hardbound book, weighing in at near 400 large size A4 pages, on acid free, low sheen, archival quality paper. Hardcover, with thick heavy-duty dust jacket. This book follows the same style and appearance as the excellent - “Numeral Cancellations of Victoria” by Hugh Freeman & Geoff White, Volume #17 in the superb RPSV. “J.R.W. Purves Memorial Series”. I have sold numerous cartons of that sought after Vic book - literally, and still have 2 in stock at $A150 a copy. The first edition of this superb NSW book by Hugh Freeman, APR, published in 2012, very quickly sold out, and has been in great demand on the rare occasions when a copy shows up for sale. Indeed I have seen them get around $500 at Public Auction. I have a CD Rom of it in stock for those who do not need a paper copy, and even that costs $A40! This brand new second edition, working together with Dr. Geoff Kellow from Brusden White, incorporates many new discoveries and revisions, with additional illustrations and often with adjusted rarity ratings. Hugh’s research in this postmark area has been acknowledged with the award of the Research Medal from the Australian Philatelic Federation earlier this year.

Without this book in your hand, you simply would have zero idea if you have a $500 “217” cancel, or a 5¢ one! Hugh Freeman certainly has had a mass of NSW material to sift through, in his half century long search. I first met Hugh some 40 years back when he started and ran Status Stamp Auctions in Sydney, along with my then neighbour Barry Cooper. Hugh had worked for stamp auctions in Sydney well before that time as well - Kevin Duffy appointed him Auction manager in 1969/1971. “Penny Black Postal Auctions” in the 1970s, run from Lindfield (see current PO photo nearby) will be remembered by many. Probably a $5,000 stockcard. mended. All cancels are rated in 9 specific Rarity classes - from “not-rated” meaning they are reasonably common to very common, to “NNS” - number not seen. EVERY dealer and Auction house in the world should own this book, and it goes without saying ALL collectors of NSW need to have one too. Stumble across even one half decent cancel, just once in your lifetime, and it is more than paid for.

As an example of how often the rare cancels occur on common stamps, Hugh kindly supplied this scan for me of the 9 ordinary looking NSW stamps nearby, all with “RRRRR” cancels. I suspect each of them would sell for very many $100s, EACH one more than doubling the cost price of this book. Many are the unique recorded strikes. And if this group were offered at $A4,000$A5,000 they’d very likely find a new home to a keen collector, due to their rarity, and lovely strikes. Each stamp, as you can readily see, are the type of thing that could turn up in any kiddie’s album, or for 5¢ in any junk lot at a stamp fair, or Club circuit sheet etc. Every Kiddie’s album ever formed has these low value NSW stamps in them!

Highest NSW so far is $A825.

After doing quite a lot of research I can advise that it seems clear the highest price so far paid strictly for a NSW cancel was $A825 for an indistinct “971” of Mount Poole, on a cover to Melbourne.

Market Matters Mailed in 1881, it had the common 2d blue DLR QV franking. The cover was daggy, defective and had the flap missing. It was in the PHILAS auction of July 9, 2011, and there was a very tiny and really blurry monocolour photocopy of part of the cover in the catalogue. Estimated at $180, it got invoiced at $A825. Rarity rating of “971” is “RRRRR”. I spoke to the $800 underbidder, and he told me then he had “not got around” to buying the NSW cancels book. Amazing. The cancel “543” on a 6d Violet shown nearby Hugh advises was found in a Geelong Philatelic Circuit Book sitting there unrecognised. The only known strike of “543”. Hugh advises he now only collects the NSW First Allocation Barred Numerals and Rays numbers, between 1 and 600, on the Large Diadems - just like this “543”. A really superb book, and with the assistance of Geoff Kellow, and the other active collectors named in the book - an opus work of which they can all be proud for contributing to. One of the fellow researchers, David Rofe kindly sent me a detailed summary of the new numeral finds added to this work.

DOZENS of new “RRRRR” cancels listed.

David listed out many dozens of cancels thought not to exist in the last edition, that definite strikes have now been recorded for. That data is a little too detailed for a general article, but amazing that so many NEW finds have been made between Editions. Most of these are now given the highest Rarity Rating of “RRRRR”. Locate just one, and a nice strike will be very many $100s. NSW numeral postmarks are an emerging field. Nothing has yet exceeded even $1,000 a cancel. A great “new” collecting area to start on. That figure is commonplace for the scarce Victoria numerals indeed $2,000+ is possible. As the Victoria book has been out since 2001. This Victoria “1432” cancel shown above was invoiced for over $2,000 on an estimate of $300 by Phoenix Auctions in Melbourne. Numeral “1432” was allocated to Glenmaggie, and later renamed Dawson. A very nice find by someone! As I type incessantly here - “Knowledge Is Power”. Find even one MODERATELY scarce numeral, just once in your lifetime, and this book is paid for - forever. I sell the books for $A185, the same price as the SG “Part One” 2018, and most readers really should have BOTH on their desk. with “Forty Thieves” is one of the great unsolved mysteries of the retail world. Anyway, name it that they did, and these days AliBaba is a huge online operation - far larger than either Amazon.com, and MANY times larger than eBay, believe it or not. Alibaba are a massive online seller of all kinds of goods … very much along the eBay business model really. However, some of the material openly offered there clearly raises eyebrows - to put it mildly. “Forty Thieves” indeed. eBay of course has slumped heavily in recent years - the stamp division especially, as they allow stamp forgeries and regums to be offered with total impunity, even when advised of them, and allow active “shill” bidding by sellers to push up prices hence adding to their eBay and paypal profits. You can fool all of the people SOME of the time, and SOME of the people of all of the time etc, but the chickens are coming home to roost with the eBay stamp sales division it seems in recent times. It once had some standards, and some rules. No longer. Buyers have deserted it steadily. A cesspit of fakes and dodgy junk. AliBaba is even less principled than eBay it seems - if that is possible! Some very strange things go on in the online world, and I saw a doozy this week that truly beggars belief. One really seriously wonders how vigilant Australia Post Security really is, in protecting their bottom line, and actively addressing fraud? Ever head of “AliBaba”? Most readers never have. In my youth the only mention of Ali Baba was as a character from the folk tale “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves”. That story is included in many versions of the One Thousand and One Nights. “5 Million units a week.” Prepaid satchels for THREE cents apiece, if purchased in bulk. See their ad nearby. Seller advertises these cost from between 3 and 6 cents US apiece, and brags they can produce 5 million pieces a week, as you can see on nearby scan. Are they genuine? Well Virginia, I’ll let you make that tough decision! And I am sure some dopes buy them.

A 3 Kilo Gold Express pre-paid satchel costs $A15.65 from your Post Office, so clearly 3¢ each seems a tad suspicious, even to those of limited IQ! As you can see from their images, their satchels being offered apparently have AP tracking numbers, and the peel off receipt tabs on them etc. EVERY reader hopefully uses only attractive STAMPS on all mailings, and anyone that uses a plastic pre-paid bag to me, when I am paying the postage, hears about it long and hard and forcefully - and I hope all buyers take such a firm stand on that. NO excuse at all. So a warning to those who slavishly chase improbable “BARGEENZ” off the web - things are often NOT what they seem at first glance. I suspect these things might have numbers that do not register or compute when you lodge and scan at Post Offices etc. 60 - Stamp News

It might even trigger a silent alert when scanned, that the code product is stolen or fake, and I hope so, as the Federal Police are then the ones you will be talking to on it, not the local Boys In Blue, as AP is owned by the Federal Government. Sites like eBay seem to have a lot of pre-paid product on offer at well under PO prices that is either this totally forged and bogus material from China, or goods stolen from Australia Post. Reportedly stolen via warehouse staffers etc, as stock checking is not very vigilant. Again, if Australia Post ever gets organised enough to RECORD the serial number batches of what is stolen from them, and simply set their system to trigger an internal alarm when this stolen material is being scanned in, they have a clear path to the stolen goods. The sender, and sending PO will glow like a beacon! They should of course serve a legal demand on the seller, and on Alibaba, to cease breaching their copyright logo. A very simple and concise matter, and if anyone knows who in AP Security to pass this on to - please do so ASAP, and they should be right onto this. BEWARE of buying any of this plastic pre-paid stuff etc online.

Slightly larger than a stamp stockbook! Christ, commissioned by King Louis XII of France more than 500 years ago, sold at Christie’s in New York for $US450.3m (=$A600 Million) in mid-November. This realisation totally shattered the world record, for any work of art ever sold at auction way more than doubled it, in fact, The sale was only rather briefly reported in the media, and I spent TEN hours digging around, to discover that the background story to it has enough bizarre material, to be the subject of a 2 hour feature film thriller! Not stamp related, (well stamps are miniature works of art!) but I am sure you’ll be as fascinated as I was.

This painting was a commission from King Louis XII of France and his wife, Anne of Brittany. It is later documented in the collection of the wife of King Charles I of England in 1649, before it was sold at auction by the Duke of Buckingham’s son in 1763. No trace of it for the next 137 years. About 20 early copies were made, and tracking the ORIGINAL is tough.

The same painting it is thought, was much later purchased in 1900 by Sir Frederick Cook, from Sir Charles Robinson who thought it was a painting by Bernadino Luini. It was next recorded sold for £45 Stamp News - 61

“Aggressively over-cleaned” and abraded. at Sotheby’s in London in 1958, where it was not regarded or advertised as a genuine Leonardo da Vinci work. It had been badly restored over this period - a 1912 photo shows it was heavily re-painted over, and the Americans then “restored” it far more! Three American art dealers had spotted the work at an estate auction in the USA in 2005, according to the ”New York Times”, and bought it for less than $US10,000. It was apparently described as a copy of a Leonardo da Vinci painting. They tried hard to sell it to the Dallas Museum of Art in 2012 and failed. You do not get much painting for your $A600 million - it is less than 18” high painted area - not much bigger than a stamp stockbook! (15⅜” x 17½” or 64.5 x 44.7 cm = Christies official figures!) The fortunate recent seller was Russian billionaire ”Fertiliser King” - Dmitry E. Rybolovlev, who purchased it in May 2013 for $US127½ million through Yves Bouvier, a Swiss art dealer and businessman. Those two are still fighting in the courts worldwide. 62 - Stamp News

Bouvier had only a few weeks earlier bought the painting for $US80 million from Sotheby’s, which brokered a private sale on behalf of the three New York art dealers mentioned above. They had it extensively restored and “cleaned” rather harshly, from the reports I have read. Did not hurt the sale price one iota however! The condition is a real problem. Luke Syson, curator of a 2011 National Gallery London Exhibition, where the painting was on show, said in his catalogue essay that “the picture has suffered.” While both hands are well preserved, he said, the painting was “aggressively over-cleaned” resulting in abrasion of the whole surface, “especially in the face and hair of Christ.” An art lover viewing it wrote - “a well-known expert in the field leaned over and asked me a question. “Why is a Leonardo in a Christie’s Modern and Contemporary Art auction?” Before I could say, “Yeah - Why?” he answered - “Because 90 percent of it was painted in the last 50 years.” He is right.’

Prince Albert II and shunned Rybolovlev.

Buy $10,000 - sell $80m. “Ripped Off”!

Bouvier’s move to resell the work within weeks, at a mark-up of more than $US47 million, later prompted a litigious response from both Rybolovlev AND the New York art dealers. Typical American greed! Buy for $10,000 in 2005, sell for a massive $US80 million just 8 years later, and scream and squeal you were duped and conned! The Americans predictably threatened last year to sue Sotheby’s for “cheating” them. In November, Sotheby’s moved to block the lawsuit with a declaratory judgment action, but that was later withdrawn, and the matter resolved. BEFORE the Christies sale. They are probably suing again, given the record sale at FIVE times of what they got paid! The Russian seller Rybolovlev claims in a continuing multi-jurisdictional lawsuit, that he was fraudulently overcharged by Bouvier for the da Vinci, and 37 other major-name artworks, for which he paid about $US2 Billion in total he has stated, and appears to claim he was charged $US1 Billion too much. then, as wife Elena had just got a divorce settlement of $US4.5 Billion in 2014, that they later battled about. Mr Rybolovlev seems to enjoy court battles as you will see in this article, and still has lawyers busy all over the globe on this da Vinci matter. After the filing of a Rybolovlev suit in 2015, Bouvier was arrested in Monaco on a trumped up charge that had little or no merit most agree, and was released on equally silly bail of 10 million Euro. He subsequently counter-claimed that the Monaco Judiciary and Police were being directed by Rybolovlev. Then things got crazy. In September 2017, Monaco’s Minister of Justice, Philippe Narmino, resigned, after the French newspaper “Le Monde” somehow obtained 100s of text messages, proving that he had been “leaned on” by Rybolovlev and his legal team. The youknow-what then fit the proverbial fan after that in Monaco. The texts detailed an all-expenses-paid ski trip for Narmino and his wife at the Russian billionaire’s Swiss chalet in Gstaad, as well as a private helicopter ride, and other expensive gifts and holidays. The messages also suggest Rybolovlev’s attorney was in close contact with the Monaco police about a plan to arrest Bouvier after “luring” him to Monaco. Several high-ranking Monaco Police officers, including former police chief Regis Asso are also reportedly involved. Rybolovlev is the 67% majority owner of AS Monaco Football Club - Prince Albert owns the rest. The texts made it clear that he was pulling the strings in Monaco to have the book thrown at Stamp News - 63

Market Matters Bouvier. And that he was behind official attempts to lure Bouvier to Monaco, so the trap would close even further, and police there were then able to arrest him.
