Stamp News - 5
This article first appeared in June 2013 issue. The spirit of the message remains current. We all have our preferences in Philately and, for those of us who maintain the magic for a lifetime, perhaps suggests our preferences have the settings correctly dialed in. I’ve often wondered if a reason for collectors retiring early from Philately was a consequence of not having chosen an aspect which would Figure 1. N.S.W. Sesqui 9d overload maintain the captivation sustainably. That observation, over I recall about 1980, there was a survey of Ausseveral decades, is that the more “rounded”, or matralian collector’s interests, I don’t recall who conture the approach to collecting, the better the chances ducted it (either Australia Post or one of the then two of remaining in for the long haul. For example, if magazines, I guess?), the results however indicated one goes about collecting something finite, say, such the most popular country to collect was Australian as a readily available country, where to once the task Antarctic Territory. Doubtless, that popularity was is completed? because on a simplified basis anyone could have a complete collection. How many of those collectors rose to a greater challenge and are still with us. Precious few, I’ll wager. So, what constitutes a well-rounded collection? The answer is probably one constructed so as to embrace the development of the stamps of a given country, or series, to incorporate Essays and other original design elements, Proofs (die, plate and colour trials) and printer’s other reference (e.g. imprimaturs) and Specimen material, the issued stamps, perhaps with emphaFigure 2. collectors who would agree that a good formula for maintaining the thrill of Philately is to embrace everything it has to offer, all the bells and whistles, rather than the entry level basics. Not everyone can start at the top, but building towards an all embracing goal is more likely to stimulate the senses sustainably. \One of many reasons I favour Usage over other categories in collecting, is that one may have a better chance in that category than in others of forming a collection which is a best-of-kind. Specialized catalogues often tell us most of what we need to know about Essays, Proofs, Specimens, and the issued stamps and variants, but why and how the stamps Figure 3. 1/- Small Lyrebird first issue difficult as a solo franking, selcame to be put to use is generally dom more so than in this instance too broad a field to conveniently categorize in catalogue form. There are European catalogues sis on items more out of the ordinary, such as blocks that indicate prices for solo, multiple and combinarather than singles, errors and varieties occurring tion frankings on cover, etc, of a given stamp, but during printing, maybe FDCs, and certainly commercial postal use of the collection subjects. What is the most important amongst these aspects of collecting? Individual preferences will have it that some will say the Essay which prompted the stamp design is of prime importance, others will opt for the finished product, or an error in printing, and so on. For me, it’s the study of the purpose for which a stamp was issued, and how that stamp could be deployed in serving postal use that I rate as Philately’s purest and most important aspect: the science of Usage. Whatever your preference, I think there are many long term Figure 4. Early QANTAS passenger postcard Stamp News - 7
that is just an introduction. There may be many possibilities for a solo franking, for example, some pedestrian, others rarely encountered. \This month I’ve selected a representative stamp issue from various Australian series of the £SD era, in the reigns of KGVI and QEII (Figure 10 the Figure 5. Most wouldn’t give this item a second glance? exception). These selections lend themselves to development in to an interesting series for usage study, particularly as Usage exhibits from one, to as many as eight frames they span four letter rate regimes. Franking aber(or more for the ambitious) in a few instances. With rations abound. Figure 1 is at the higher level of some dedication and perseverance, one could emerge elusiveness, a multiple franking of the 1937 N.S.W. as the owner of a best-of-kind collection for one or Sesqui 9d, two pairs, and a trio of 6d Kookaburra for more of these series. They form Valuation : $400 I like underpaid covers; they are more likely to be commercial than overpaid articles. A double-deficiency penalty applied to the sum underpaid, so unless the sender was deliberately hoping to obtain Postage due stamps (and that can occasionally be the case with underpaid articles), the end result was negative. Figure 2 is a particularly unusual underpaid item, bearing KGVI 2d mauve dispensed from a coil machine; the sharp, pointy horizontal perforations confirm that origin. This 1947 (Oct 2) use should have been accompanied by a ½d Kangaroo, the coil machine for which would have been alongside the 2d machine. Just an instance of oversight by sender, but delivering us a rare solo use of the subject stamp. Coil stamp usage is very popular amongst a select group of enthusiasts. The KGVI and Figure 6. modest sums. Just don’t expect to find FDCs in a hurry for the 2½d, 3½d and 5½d if you’re planning to extend your collection to embrace more traditional elements. Figure 4 is a rare solo use of the 5½d Dec 5 1950 at Darwin to Brisbane, at the airmail postcard rate introduced just four days earlier. The early QANTAS passenger cards are very collectable in their own right, and the neat private etiquette lower left is a nice addition. My valuation may surprise some, but this is a very desirable usage item : $200. The 1947-52 KGVI defins, those spanning from 1d Princess to £2 Arms, are a cracker series for the usage aficionado. A super eight-frame exhibit is possible, although the £2 will be a challenge. Of that, I’ve seen three tags, a couple of Business Reply frankings for aggregate multiple sendings, and just two airmail
QE stamps of 1937-38 and later incarnations can form a terrific usage study; eight frames the goal. Valuation : $200 The Zoological series of 1937-38 and successors, similarly, are highly recommended for a highly interesting usage study. Figure 3 is one of the rarest possible solo franking opportunities for the first perforation 1/- Lyrebird. This 1937 (Nov 2) use Melbourne-Hong Kong represents a rate of 11d per ½oz. + 1d Late fee (note “4 30AM” in date slug), to ensure processing in that days mail, being handed in after regular closing time. Valuation : $250 The “little” wartime series of KGVI defins issued between 1942 and 1944 (QE 1d and 1½d, KGVI 2d, 2½d and 3½d) and 5½d Emu) is an excellent series for usage study for the more budget conscious. It’s an Official use Nov 12 1951 of the KGVI 3d from the Booklet plate (note perforated selvedge at top), which was released in sheet form at post offices in late Sep 1951. Govt Depts must also have been allocated some to use them up. The postage rate increase Jul 9 1951 from 3d to 3½d rendered this stamp valid only for Printed matter, etc. This is the only commercial use I’ve noted. Valuation : $250. Rarer than a “Plate no.” of the KGVI 3d, at a fraction the price. The 1956 Olympic Games set can make for an attractive one-frame usage exhibit; I have one of which I’m Figure 9. The most elusive on cover of the popular Birds series rather fond. chance, so understandably Figure 10 was bound to get my philatelic red corpuscles multiplying. It’s a completely new find, never before on the market, after more than 90 years in the closet. My thanks to Millennium and Geoff Kellow for bringing it to my attention; watch for it in an upcoming auction. This 19/- franking (just short of requiring a Kangaroo £1 bicolour!!) was once attached to a parcel sent from Mumbil NSW to the Sydney Mint. 19/- was for a 75lbs parcel, the rate comprised of Intrastate 9d for 2lbs. + 3d each additional lb. x73 = 19/-. Presumably gold/coins going to Mint? The parcel would have required two able-bodied men to lift. What to do with the overlapped 2/-, well may some ask? When not tied by a cancellation, etc, I prefer to steam them so as to expose extended from displayed side of article. Such items present in an exhibit better that way, and a subsequent owner can always revert to the original if preferred. In an era when attention focuses on discoveries of unimportant, albeit expensive items, this is a refreshing, and important find, in my opinion. I would prefer to own this item than, for instance 100 bog standard used 10/- Kangaroos. Yes, those may be worth more in monetary terms, but in terms of philatelic significance, far less. That differential is rapidly becoming recognised in the marketplace. This great item realised $5360 (including premium). I can think of at least five collectors who would be enthusiastically waving their hand at Auctioneer at such level nowadays. These words were penned days before the Australia 2013 EXPO. I hope those who attended had a wonderful time. Doubtless, many stories will trail following this momentous event! Stamp News - 11
Guernsey, alderney & Sark It is not unusual for collectors to encounter items which look like regular postage stamps but on closer scrutiny they are not. That is also the reason why they cannot be located in stamp catalogues causing even more confusion as most collectors are curious people. One such case are the many stamps of the Commodore Shipping Company (CSC) which operated in the British Channel Islands. Starting in 1952, the CSC signed a contract with the British GPO to carry the mail between Guernsey and the Isle of Sark. Simple typeset labels were issued for the company’s parcel service. These labels are extremely scarce today. In 1961, a set of four pictorial labels featuring views of Sark was added (Fig. 1).
In 1962, the CSC signed a similar contract to carry the GPO mail between Guernsey and Alderney. This was at the height of interest in the EUROPA topic with worldwide collectors scrambling to obtain everything philatelic which included the magic word. In 1962, the CSC issued sets of ďŹ ve pictorial parcel stamps for its two services. They were obviously overprinted with the words EUROPA 1962 to increase sales. Later that same year, the very same stamps were released without the overprint. The stamps are quite attractive featuring mostly local scenery (Fig. 2). In 1963, various vessels were depicted on similar sets of six stamps for the two routes and they were once again produced with and without

Christer BrunstrĂśm the EUROPA overprint (Fig. 3). All these issues seem to be quite legitimate and they were actually used to pay for the carriage of parcels on the two services linking Guernsey with Alderney and Sark. It is interesting to note that the stamps lacking the EUROPA overprint are quite scarce today. Major changes occurred in 1964 when a London wholesale stamp dealer took over the production and marketing of the CSC parcel stamps. There were basic stamp sets depicting maps (Fig. 4) and a hydrofoil followed by different aircraft. Some sets were also released in souvenir sheet format. The designs were largely the same for the two islands. In fact, the frame is identical for all issues and it was only the centre which was changed for
each value. I suppose this was an inexpensive way of having stamps printed. The 1964 EUROPA stamps for the two routes sold well and they were also offered cancelled on cards. As they were parcel stamps they could not be used on covers as that would infringe on the government postal monopoly. However, once the orders for the EUROPA stamps had been ďŹ lled the wholesaler obviously had large remainders. In order to increase sales, the basic stamps were overprinted to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill and US President John F. Kennedy (Fig. 5) These overprints included the heads of Churchill and Kennedy; it certainly was an economical way of producing new material to sell to worldwide collectors who wanted to add

Guernsey, alderney & Sark everything issued in honour of these two famous men. All sets also exist with the ubiquitous EUROPA overprint. Some were also overprinted in 1971 to be used as stamps by an emergency postal service during a postal strike that year. They appear to be completely bogus (Fig. 6). There is very little proof that these post-1964 issues saw any genuine use at all which of course puts them in the Cinderella category. CSC’s contract with the British GPO was terminated in September 1969 when the Bailiwick of Guernsey launched its own independent postal services. Rather interestingly, the anniversary of the Norman Conquest in 1066 was celebrated by two commemorative stamps in 1966. They differ con-
siderably from the other stamps (Fig. 7). The Guernsey-Alderney and Guernsey-Sark stamps turn up quite often. Some were genuine parcel stamps used by the Commodore Shipping Company but most were printed to be sold to unsuspecting collectors. At a recent London stamp fair I acquired a small stockbook containing some 25 complete mint sets and a few souvenir sheets of the CSC parcel stamps. I paid ÂŁ20 for the lot which gives us a clue to the value of these stamps. The majority of the sets were from the post-1964 period. The Commodore Shipping Company issued some 118 different stamps for the Guernsey-Sark route and approximately 93 stamps for the service to Alderney.

Stamps in the News - Globally! Out of the ashes: Stories of survival and hope from the fire zone Reported at www.facebook.com/australiapost
Post office turned into animal rescue centre in charred Australian village The joey rescued from his mother’s pouch after the bushfires that tore through the village of Cobargo on the south coast of New South Wales last week has no name yet, but Kyle Moser is leaning towards “Ali”. “Like the fighter,” he explains. In a room at the back of the Cobargo post office, Moser and his partner, David Wilson, are caring for the kangaroo soon to be known as Ali and two wallaby joeys. Next door is the remains of a burnt-out cafe. Across the road are the charred ruins of what used to be a leather shop, a yoga studio and an incense shop. “We were told that the fireys really fought to save the post office because they didn’t want to lose it,” Moser says. “It’s humbling, you know? Why do we deserve that?” Moser and Wilson have not been entirely lucky. The couple moved here from Sydney four years ago to start a new life together running the post of-

fice. After the weekend’s fire, it has become their home. While they feed the sheep, cows and goats that miraculously survived the blaze amid the rubble of what used to be their home, they explain how they watched in the early hours of New Year’s Eve as the fire approached their town. “It was terrifying,” Moser says. “I never thought I’d be involved in a bushfire – and never again, hopefully. It was just so scary. I just packed the car. Dave did want to fight it in the beginning but we were worried about getting out. There’s

only one road in here.” Further down the coast in Bega, Max and Rosemary are a husband-and-wife team at Australia Post who have stood with their NSW Rural Fire Service brigade on the frontlines in their town. “I see so many people who have lost everything and I wonder how they’re going to move forward. They will need a lot of help. But I also see many people already helping each other and that’s very important. It doesn’t matter how much or little you do - it’s about being there for one another.” said Max, Postal Delivery Officer. From tragedy rises incredible displays of humanity. Like that of Sukhwinder Kaur, a team member at Australia Post, who has been feeding thousands of bushfire evacuees in East Gippsland. Since 30 December, she has camped at Bairnsdale Oval where she has single-handedly cooked hundreds of meals for those in the temporary relief shelters there.
Out of the ashes in Syria Reported at www.dailysabah.com
Mobile postal services have been opening in Turkish-held areas of Syria.
A mobile branch of Turkey’s state-run Post and Telegraph Organization (PTT) opened recently in Syria’s northern Tal Abyad province following establishment of PTT branches in northern Syria’s Jarablus, Al-Bab, Çobanbey, Azaz and Afrin regions. The mobile offices offer a range of financial services in addition to more traditional postal services. Turkey has been hosting more than 4 million Syrian refugees and hopes to rehouse them in Turkish-controlled areas of Syria.
Happy Christmas the war is over Reported at www.derryjournal.com
Back in 1975 leading Irish Republican, Barney McFadden, suggested the founding of an alternative postal service for Derry. It was one of a number of ideas examined to offer people in the north west of Northern Ireland an alternative to using British government services, and it took off in no time. Veteran Sinn Féin activist, Tony Hassan recalls, “Barney came up with this idea and suggested why not put a stamp out and make a few bob for the Prisoners’ Dependants Fund ( which raised

money for Republican prisoners and their families). It was a novelty at the time having an alternative to the British post office, and it went quite smoothly. It was well received and there were plenty of members to deliver it.” Mr Hassan noted the first stamp issued featured an image of the General Post Office in Dublin burning in reference to the Easter 1916 revolution, and each year thereafter the stamp reflected contemporary events. “Every year after that first year, for the stamp we followed the political situation and what was happening at that time, the Hunger Strikes, the Blanket protest, whatever was happening at that time we had a political message on the stamp.” And the service, which would later be replicated in other cities across Ireland, didn’t go unnoticed by those in power. In the first years of the Sinn Féin Christmas Postal Service, a Unionist MP tried in 1978 to get the Royal Mail Post Office 18 - Stamp News
to take action, without success, as the Post Office concluded it was not going to damage their service given it was just two weeks of the year, and nor was action in the interests of its employees. Meanwhile, the uptake went from strength to strength as more and more local people switched to the post. Nine years later, the local Sinn Féin activists were delivering 60,000 envelopes containing Christmas cards and letters in the north west during the 1984 festive
period. “The stamps were sold in the offices and people would come in and collect the envelopes and they were put into different boxes from different areas and people would sort them out for delivery. It ran pretty smoothly.” For the past 44 years, the postal operation has swept into action in December but this year party activists regrouped for one last time. And in a

fitting gesture, the final stamp features a picture of the late Barney McFadden, regarded as the father of Republicanism in Derry in honour of his pivotal role in getting the service up and running, as well as a commemorative booklet. The cessation of the service is due to the sharp decline in the volume of Christmas mail.
Red faces in Norway
Reported at www.lifesitenews.com A Christmas commercial produced by the Norwegian Postal Service, Posten Norge, suggests that Christ’s conception was not miraculous, and that He was really the mailman’s son. It has been claimed that the ad, which the Postal Service said is meant to “create awareness about Posten in a warm, humorous and surprising way,” not only denies Jesus’ divinity and the Virgin Birth, it implies that Mary was unfaithful to Joseph, having sex with any man who knocked on her door. In the commercial, after the postman makes his rounds he sets out to deliver a scroll sent by to Joseph and Mary ordering them to return to their hometown to register in the census. As the postman bends down to deposit the scroll in a pot in front of the house, Mary opens
the door. Their eyes meet, and Mary is shown to be smitten with the blond-haired mailman. Nine months later, we see Mary and Joseph in a stable. Brown-haired Joseph looks lovingly at Mary and Jesus, who is shown to have blond hair just like the mailman’s. “Well, maybe that’s not quite how it happened in those days,” says a narrator. “But whatever the story, the postman has always been an important part of Christmas.” A version of the video posted on Twitter has generated intense backlash from Christians.

Canada Post had to recall the booklet of 12 Magi stamps shortly after the Nov. 4 issue date because the stamp design was printed on the wrong side. This non-denominated, permanent-rate self-adhesive Christmas stamp shows a silhouette of the Magi on camels. Canada Post’s press release announcing the recall of the Magi booklet said that “we have detected that some of them may be defective. During production, it appears some of The Magi booklets were printed improperly, with the glue sticking to the booklet rather than the stamps.” Stamp News - 19

“We apologize for this error and are working to reprint and restock the item and expect to have replacement booklets available for sale online on Friday, November 22 and in stores early the week of November 25,” Canada Post said. A similar error occurred on booklets of Canada’s permanent-rate stamp issued April 20, 2018, to honour the 65th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II although those booklets were not recalled.
Red faces in Israel
Reported at www.haaretz.com/israel-news/business/ Sources within the post office claim that Amazon’s free shipping has brought Israeli postal services to a state of chaos. The end-of-year sales from major international retailers, combined with Amazon’s free shipping to Israel, have produced volume that’s delaying the delivery of all kinds of mail. Israel Post is struggling to handle the sharp increase in its number of parcels, and industry sources say this is slowing everyday operations. In September, Israel Post signed a package 20 - Stamp News
distribution agreement with Amazon. According to some sources, to meet its terms with Amazon, Israel Post apparently decided to prioritize Amazon packages at the expense of others, including other international commerce websites. As a result, packages from other sites are being delayed, with delivery times taking weeks and sometimes even months. But Israel Post said that it is “facing high volume, like all the other logistics companies in Israel and around the world, due to the increase in orders. The claims involving Amazon aren’t true, and we do not comment on business matters.”
Red faces in the US
Reported at https://www.rgj.com/story/news/ There’s a little more “snail” in Mason Valley, Nevada, snail mail these days. Due to a shortage of stamps in the area, sending Christmas cards or mailing bills in Yerington may take extra time and effort. Both post offices and the supermarket in Yerington ran out of stamps before Christmas. “OMG. How is this even possible?” asked Gail Zimmerman on a Yerington Facebook bulletin page. “The postmaster retired and was only one able to order stamps. What bull!!!!” replied John Pierce. The local stamp supply has steadily dwindled over the last few weeks in December. On the door to the Yerington Post Office on South Main Street is a white sign circled with fluorescent, pink highlighter that reads, “Stop: BOTH offices are out of stamps — we do not have a postmaster to order them!” Post office employees declined to comment or speculate when stamps will be available. also said they are legally unable to say when another postmaster is expected to take the helm. Ironically, beneath signs resting on the counter announcing the shortage are posters advertising the U.S. Post Office’s newest releases. “New Stamps Have Arrived” boasts a large poster. Folks needing stamps may order them online (usps.com), or purchase and print labels from the same site. Stamps can also be purchased at nearby post offices: Smith Valley, Wellington and Silver Springs are each less than 30 miles away. Thanks to Stampboards member Norvic for forwarding this story
Postal strike finishes the Finnish PM Reported at www.euronews.com
Margo’s note: Last month I reported on the longstanding postal strike in Finland. This strike has now led to the resignation of Finland’s Prime Minister. Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne has resigned after a member of his five-party coalition
government stated it has lost confidence in the Social Democrat leader. A party spokesman said that her party had serious questions over Rinne’s role in handling recent crippling strikes in Finland. Rinne’s resignation was tendered to the Finnish President who accepted the offer of resignation but had asked the cabinet to continue as a caretaker government until a new one is formed. Rinne’s centre-left coalition took office less than six months ago when the Social Democratic Party narrowly won April’s parliamentary election. The Finnish government has been widely criticised for its handling of widespread national strikes which lasted for two weeks. Industrial action from the country’s state postal service, Posti, spread to the national airline, Finnair, and other industries before ending in November.

poses. A plane descending at an airport, with another trailing in the distance. And a pair of … carnivorous dinosaurs? These disparate images all can be found within the University of Chicago Library’s new collection of North Korean stamps which span from 1962 to 2018, assembled in a public online database to provide a unique glimpse of the insular country. “I was very surprised,” said Jee-Young Park, the Korean Studies librarian at UChicago who built the collection. “It’s not only political matters. It’s a variety of subjects, like nature, culture, history, art and music.” Certain stamps echo the political messages of those other materials, covered with anti-American slogans, images of the military and portraits of the Kim family, which has held a dictatorship in North Korea for seven decades. Some illustrate folk cultures that predate the division of Korea at the end of World War II, while others boast of participation in the Olympics or major national milestones. For Park, a South Korean native, the stamps offered a look at the “internal logic” of an authoritarian regime—the emotions it hopes to stir among its people, and the messages it seeks to project. One UChicago doctoral student, Park added, has 22 - Stamp News
already found the stamps to be helpful while conducting research on North Korean education policy. “Decade by decade, we can see North Korean society and culture change,” she said. During the 1970s, North Korea began mass producing stamps for distribution as gifts and collectors’ items—a sign that they likely reflect how the country wants to be perceived by outsiders. But some images don’t quite fit that explanation. The oldest set of stamps in UChicago Library’s collection are from 1962, and depict animals like raccoons, otters and bears. A series of stamps display dinosaurs whose fossils were found nowhere near the Korean peninsula, while another replicates the works of European artists like Picasso and Degas. “These are rare materials,” Park said. “I don’t believe any other research organization or institution has this many stamps.” The full collection of more than 2,000 North Korean stamps can be searched online @ http:// tiny.cc/hvphiz

The project “Çantamda Mama Var” (“Got Food in my Bag”) was organized by Turkey’s Post Service’s union PTT-DER and the municipality of the Canik district. The municipality is going to provide small packages of cat and dog food to the postal workers, who will place them wherever animals are sighted. Canik Mayor told reporters that during cold winter days stray animals have problems finding something to eat. The municipality is already working on projects to provide warm and isolated shelters, he said, adding that they want to prevent the animals from starving in the cold season. “As postal workers walking the streets we wanted to distribute food the animals,” a PTT-DER spokeman said, adding that they plan to promote this project in other provinces. “We will try to provide food to all the animals in Samsun so that they won’t go hungry. For now, we will give food
to cats and dogs, and plan to add birdseed soon.”

Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for February 2020. This month’s column looks at postal stationery at Aeropex 2019, new sections of the New South Wales Postal Stationery Handbook, new issues from Australia Post and forthcoming exhibitions.
Aeropex 2019
Aeropex 2019 was a specialised air mail national exhibition held in Adelaide at the Torrens Parade Ground Drill Hall on 6-8 December 2019 (Figure 1). This date was chosen to commemorate the centenary of the first flight from England to Australia by Ross and Keith Smith which brought Figure 1 Aeropex 2019 the first international air mail to Australia. Postal Stationery New South Wales Postal Stationery Handbook and Catalogue
The New South Wales Postal Stationery Handbook and Catalogue is being prepared by Dingle Smith, Peter Kowald & Michael Blinman with sections being placed on the Postal Stationery Society of Australia website as they are completed. Sections on stamped wrappers and registration envelopes have been previously published on the Society’s website. Sections for New South Wales Letter Cards (Figure 11) and Jubilee Cards (Figure 12) are now available on the web site at https://postalstationeryaustralia.com/postal-stationery-of-nsw/. The accounts are profusely illustrated and include a catalogue Figure 6 Burma Lettersheet listing for the letter cards. The New South Wales Jubilee Post Cards: In late 1888 arrangements were completed for the exchange of post cards between New South Wales and Great Britain; the rates being 2d for the long sea route or 3d for the quicker overland route to Great Britain via Italy. Special cards were prepared for this purpose. The suggestion was

Of particular note is the fascinating history of the purpose of these most colourful of the NSW postcards, that is the intention that the 2d and 3d rates of the first two issues distinguish between the `long sea route’ and the quicker `overland route’ through France via Italy. Figure 10 Madhukar Jhingan Taking People Through His Exhibit route, departure and arrival times that shows that the advantage gained, for the extra penny, by the overland route usually ranged from 4 to 8 days. The November 1890 decision to change the maximum post card charge to 2d for the United Kingdom, France and some other countries ended the ability to charge differentially for routes. This immediately shortened the useful life of the third `and for France’ issue producing a particular rarity if any of those cards had a French destination and were sent between 19 August and 29 December 1890 (the last day before issue of the single rate 2d card). This is the first instalment of what will be a coverage of all the NSW postcards.
Lettercards: The first New South Wales lettercards were printed in June 1894 following agreement between the Australian Colonies on their postal use and transmission. In order to allow for the required folding and perforations the cards required the use of special paper akin to thin card. This was normally imported from Great Britain and there were frequent supply problems. The existing catalogue classifications rely heavily on the recognition of the colours especially those for the inner message portion of the cards, the shades of which vary from very pale yellow to dark pink. The outer address portions also varied with various shades of grey. The current account has discarded the earlier reliance on colour as the determining factor in the classification and replaced it by a classification based on the impressed stamps, the coat of arms used on the address side, the perforations and the printed instructions on the reverse of the card. The new classification recognises nine types with possible sub-classes of colour variants limited to three of these types. It is clear from the inspection of accumulations of the Letter Cards that the effects of aging together with the variations in colour of the Stamp News - 29
Postal Stationery paper originally supplied do not provide a sustainable basis for classification. The cards were widely used, the numbers issued annually increased from some 300,000 in 1895 to in excess of a million by 1906. They continued to be issued in New South Wales until the first issue in 1912 of the Commonwealth letter cards that featured scenic views on the reverse in 1912. The account also includes details of the various styles of specimen overprints found Figure 12 3d Jubilee Postcard Used to Belgium in 1889 on the letter cards together, where known with the nal of the Postal Stationery Society of Australia, for dates, numbers printed and comments of their likely 1995-2011 prepared by Derek Brennan can be found distribution. These red and navy. Each label were designed by A. measures 44mm x 50mm J. Shearsby, a welland is perforated 11 on two known NSW artist, or three sides. Each label, who also designed illustrated collectively in several different First Stamp News - 33
Cinderella Corner Figure 7, featured a central image of the Melbourne Town Hall, encased in a map of Australia, along with the text: VICTORIAN CENTENARY & SIXTH AUSTRALASIAN PHILATELIC EXHIBITION / 1834 – 1934 / TOWN HALL MELBOURNE / NOVEMBER 8TH – 17TH / VICVI. The labels were Figure 11 printed in sheet of 6 (imperforate all around) and sold for 3d per dozen. An example of the green sheet is illustrated in Figure 8. A small number of offset labels have also surfaced, and an example of a purple and khaki brown type with a strong offset is illustrated in Figure 9. Finally, an interested printing error is illustrated in Figure 10, where, in a joined vertical pair of the green and black variety, the bottom label is missing the blue print. Geelong College Philatelists’ Society The elusive imperforate gummed label illustrated in Figure 11 measures 63mm x 76mm. Coloured red and white, it features the crudely printed text: GEELONG COLLEGE PHILATELISTS’ SOCIETY / 4TH 1935 EXHIBITION. The label is shaped as a postage stamp and does not feature in Kennedy’s extensive texts. It is not known if other colours of this scarce label exist. First Australian Philatelic Stationery Exhibition The first Australian Philatelic Stationery Exhibition was held in Melbourne (Victoria) on September 18, 1935. With its free admission, a few reports highlight that the

occasion drew reasonable crowds with stalls exhibiting a range of registration labels, post cards, postmarked items, meters and other etiquettes (including interwar Australian cinderellas, which were advertised, at the time, as ‘poster stamps’ and ‘stickers’). To help commemorate the event, a special cinderella was issued. Coloured in red and cream, this label illustrated a tall red Post Office pillarbox with the following superimposed text about the event: FIRST AUSTRALIAN PHILATELIC STATIONERY EXHIBITION, MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, SEPTEMBER 18, 1935 / METERS – REGISTRATION LABELS – POST CARDS Etc – POSTMARKS – ETIQUETTES. They were rather large at 59mm x 40mm and were offered perforated 11, rouletted 7 and imperforate (as collectively illustrated in Figure 12). It is also known that these labels were printed in strips of four, with a perforated example illustrated in Figure 13. So, while the label does occasionally surface, the collector should try to claim all three varieties (perforated, rouletted, imperforated) of this label. An example of the imperforate variety of this label, affixed and cancelled on the front of an official First Australian Philatelic Stationery Exhibition Registered cover, postmarked at Heidelberg, Victoria, is illustrated in Figure 14. The cover is addressed to well-known American philatelist, Howard K. Thompson. Next month’s Cinderella Corner will continue to explore the narrative of the cinderellas issued to commemorate some of the earlier pre-decimal Australian philatelic exhibition events across three years, from 1936 until 1938, inclusive. Any further information about those explored in this current issue would be most appreciated.

the best chance of success to win the Great Air Race prize. He had served throughout the duration of the four-year war, was a highly decorated pilot, one of only 29 Australians designated as a “War Ace” and his exploits had gained him hero status back in his hometown of Adelaide. The Vickers Aircraft Company made available to Captain Ross Smith their newly developed “Vimy” heavy bomber aircraft. They further assisted by quickly establishing landing fields and fuel depots along the route to Australia. Petroleum products from Shell and Wakefield were subsequently made available to the team. The other five entrants were also eventually able to obtain the aircraft. Unfortunately, these aircraft were simply not equipped to sustain the arduous 18,000-kilometre distance and it turned out that the other five entrants were to fly in machines that were to prove to be totally unsuitable. Only one aircraft reached the destination in the required 30 days, the Vickers Vimy. Ross Smith and the Vimy crew (See Figure 6) Ross Smith was always the leader, despite being two years younger than his brother Keith (the Vimy navigator). They had all grown up on the outback station of Mutooroo, near the NSW border. When the war broke out in August 1914, Ross immediately signed up with the Light Horse. After fighting in Gallipoli and the battle of Romani, Ross joined the fledgeling Australian Flying Corps (AFC) in Egypt in 1916. By war’s end, he was an Air Ace, one of Australia’s most decorated airmen and had even served as a pilot to Lawrence of Arabia. Keith joined the Royal Flying Corps, where he served mainly as an instructor. He was fastidious with maps and compass and would prove the perfect companion for Ross during a gruelling race that would test endurance and skill. Ross met two air mechanics, Jim Bennett and Wally Shiers during the war. Jim, an auto mechanic and salesman in Victoria, was among the first to enlist with the AFC at Point Cook. Adelaide-born Wally was an electri-
The 1919 Great Air Race The 1919 Great Air Race captured the imagination of the world. The winning crew, led by South Australian brothers Ross and Keith Smith, flew their Vickers Vimy from England to Australia in 28 days to claim victory and the Australian Government’s £10,000 prize. Australian Prime Minister, Billy Hughes was flying between England and France for the Paris Peace Conference when he came up with the idea of a Great Air Race across the world to Australia. He offered a £10,000 prize for the first Aussie airmen to fly from London to Darwin in a British-built plane. They had to land on home soil within 30 days. The critics called the race a “circus” that would surely end in death. Certainly, the journey was not without risk. Despite technological advances during the war, the rudimentary aircraft of the time were fashioned from wood, wire and fabric with open cockpits and only basic navigation. Along parts of the route, crews would be forced to land on short racetracks and hastily cleared jungle. Despite this, six groups of Australian airmen, all WW I veterans took up the challenge. However, obtaining a suitable plane and financing such a flight was the greatest hurdle they all faced. Captain Ross Smith appeared to have Figure 5: APF Souvenir sheet for Aeropex 2019

Introducing the Australian Philatelic Federation cian and joined the Light Horse in Sydney before transferring to No.1 Squadron in Egypt. Both men worked on military aircraft, including the giant Handley-Page bomber flown by Ross at the end of the war. The Race At 11:44 a.m., on October 21, 1919, the first of the six aircraft took off from Hounslow, England. Captain George Matthews with Sergeant Thomas Kay as mechanic piloted a Sopwith “Wallaby”. Nothing seemed to go right for them. Dreadful weather conditions, engine breakdowns and being imprisoned in Yugoslavia for four days when the local authorities mistakenly accused them of being “Bolsheviks. Finally, six months later, on April 17, 1920, they crash-landed in Bali. At 11:33 a.m., on November 13, 1919, Captain Roger Douglas, as pilot, and Lieutenant James Ross as navigator, departed in an Alliance P.2 Bi-plane. Only a few minutes into the flight, their plane, from an altitude of less than 1,000 feet, went into a spin and crashed into an apple orchard and both airmen died instantly. At 10:37 a.m., on November 21, 1919, with four airmen on board, a Blackburn “Kangaroo” left Hounslow. The crew comprised Lieutenants Valdemar Rendle and David Williams as co-pilots, Captain Hubert Wilkins as navigator and Lieutenant Garnsey Potts as mechanic. After 18 comparatively uneventful days of flying, on December 8, they crash-landed at Suda Bay, Crete. The damage to the engine was total and they withdrew from the race. At 9:34 a.m. on December 4, 1919, a single-engine Martinsyde, Type A piloted by Captain Cedric Howell, with Lieutenant George Fraser as navigator, lifted off from Hounslow. Approaching Corfu, Greece, due to heavy cloud and mist, Howell misjudged the landing and the aircraft crashed into the ocean just short of land. The wreckage and Howell’s body were eventually recovered but Fraser’s body was never found. The fifth entrant, an Airco, DH9 piloted by Lieutenant Ray Parer and Lieutenant John McIntosh, didn’t depart London until January 20, 1920, and so they were ineligible for the prize. They reached Darwin seven months later. At least they had completed the first “single-engine” flight from England to Australia and the Australian government Figure 6: Ross Smith and his crew standing in front of the Vickers Vimy Figure 7: Poulet Bandar Abbas to Karachi cover backstamped Karachi 13NOV19 Figure 8: Ross Smith commemorative flight vignette with full margins 54 - Stamp News

The Frenchmen Etienne Poulet and Jean Benoist were keen aviators. They attempted to execute the first flight to Australia even though they did not qualify for the competition as they were not Australian. Poulet purchased a Caudron aircraft for the race. They had an extremely challenging journey, with multiple stops and technical failures and chose to end their courageous journey in Burma. Figure 7 shows a Bandar Abbas to Karachi cover carried by Poulet. Ross Smith took off on 12 November 1919, despite very bad weather, knowing his French rival Etienne Poulet was already well on the way to Australia. After six hours of flying blind, they spotted a hole in the clouds and flew down to earth, discovering they were just 40 miles from Keith’s predicted location of Lyon, France. Over the following 28 days, the weather threw everything at them: European snowstorms, desert sandstorms and tropical downpours that lashed the skin from their faces. Across the world, from Italy to Indonesia people came to their aid. In Pisa, overnight rain left the Vimy surrounded by a lake of water and thirty Italian mechanics tried to free the plane. Ross Smith told Jim Bennett to run beside the fuselage, holding the Vimy’s tail down and her nose up out of the mud until they became airborne. When the wheels left the ground, Jim sprinted for the back cockpit and Wally hauled him in. In Ramadi, near Baghdad, 50 Indian cavalrymen stood sentry over the plane all night, using their weight to prevent her from busting up or being blown away in a raging desert sandstorm. In Surabaya, Indonesia, villagers took the bamboo matting walls from their homes and “came
streaming in from every direction” to lay a 300m runway over soft mud that had threatened to entrap the Vimy. The crew called it Matting Road. No-one knew the route quite like the Smith brothers. Having served with the Royal Flying Corps in Britain, Keith was experienced at flying in freezing temperatures, while Ross knew the deserts of the Middle East like the back of his hand. Directly after the war, Ross had flown from Cairo to Calcutta before scouting possible landing sites by sea all the way down to East Timor. That knowledge – as well as the contacts Ross made – proved one of the keys to the crew’s success. The Arrival Smith and his team landed at Fannie Bay Airfield in Darwin at 4:12 p.m. on December 10, 1919 and were instantly mobbed by almost the entire population of just under 1,500. Philatelic Development Officer, APF Philatelic Convention staged by the Philatelic Society of Canberra Inc, will be held at the Hellenic Club, Matilda Street, Woden, Canberra on 13-15 March 2020. This year is the 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook’s 1770 visit to the east coast of Australia. The main theme of the Canberra exhibition will be a celebration of Pacific Exploration, including Captain James Cook’s voyage to the Pacific, his visit to New Zealand and the Eastern Coast of Australia. During 1943 and 1944, artists of the Note Printing
Branch in Melbourne prepared preliminary designs featuring famous Australians in 5s., 10s., and £1 values. None of the designs appeared on stamps. Apart from James Cook, the potential stamp subjects included Charles Sturt, Bass & Flinders, John Macarthur and Edward Hargraves. Apparently, a plan existed to issue new high denomination stamps featuring navigators, explorers and other famous people. They would have replaced the 1938 Robes definitive series featuring King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) in their Coronation robes, as the Robes designs were considered to be outdated. In 1949–50, the Commonwealth Coat of Arms stamps – Australia’s third definitive series of high denomination stamps since 1913 – were issued to replace the Robes stamps. Three years earlier, the Post Office had staged a public stamp design competition for new definitive stamps embracing the medium and high denominations. Eight winning designs were selected, although only two were issued. In 1947, the newly-established Stamp Advisory Committee favoured heraldry as the theme for the high-value stamps, which led to the Commonwealth Coat of Arms stamps being issued.

Market Matters Sophia saving Koalas!
The recent Bushfire catastrophe in all states of Australia has had very few Good News aspects or sidebars to it, as we all know. When one emerges, it is well worth highlighting, and this I am doing here. Let us celebrate the few positive things that come from it, when so many, have lost so much nationally. Stampboards.com has an ongoing fundraiser that I started when overseas in Nepal during January, sickened by the daily lead reports on CNN and BBC World on Hotel TVs each day. Specialist catalogues etc, and all bids on all these items saw every cent go direct to the Salvation Army. Buy some scarcer stamps you need, and see all the monies go to a good cause - hard to beat that deal. We all realise the traditional “Bushfire Season” has really only just started across the country, so very sadly there will be continued need for ongoing support in coming months. So please do what you can NOW to assist all the hard working volunteer agencies who ARE there on the spot, unlike Federal Government “support” over Xmas/New Year when they were basically closed down for a month on vacations. One donation was made by 11 year old Sophia Fallon from Canada. She gave her dad all her life savings, and asked him to donate it all, so as to help save some of the gum tree habitat of her favourite animal - the Koala Bear. They say the future of the world is in the hands of this generation, and I really wish more Sophia’s were in power in our current Government!
Sophia has a desire to be a zoologist, and wants to move to Australia her Dad says, and keeps bugging him to make Oz their next holiday. Anyway, she donated $A60 via Dad’s PayPal account, and father Brad added Sophia’s photo (nearby) holding one of her Koala books, and I really found the whole thing very touching.
“She is heartbroken.”
Her Father, Brad Fallon from Mississauga Toronto, posted - “she is heartbroken over the fires in Australia, and is donating all of the money she has. We have sent it via PayPal. Sophia thanks you for your generosity and time in doing this for Australia (and the Koalas)!” I mailed her off some Australia Koala stamp mini sheets, and an artist signed one, as a little ‘Thank You’ for her wonderful gesture, and used a bunch of Australia animal, bird, frog, and butterfly stamps etc, that were laying around my desk on her outward cover as shown nearby. She’ll probably be the coolest kid in the school with a bunch of pretty stamped envelopes from 10 or 15 different countries etc! “eBay Dreamers”
eBay does not seek any minimum IQ level check for sellers (or buyers!) All you need is a valid credit card to pay all the fees. Anyone with a vivid imagination, and a piece of junk can list it up, describe it however they wish, and pay the smorgasbord of eBay charges and extras, that make them rich! the clueless dreamers cheerfully list up for $1,000 - or $10,0000 or often $100,000! And some of it sells. On eBay it seems near essential these FrootLoop dreamers give themselves total gibberish user names. This current GB 1d Machin GEM illustrated nearby, is offered in the most recent posting there, by the catchily named eBay seller par_1j0qvq3 from South Australia. I kid you not. He has been an esteemed eBayer for 6 years. Then there are the more cunning spivs who offer all kinds of shady nonsense that DOES sell, to the army of dopes who are determined “Baaahgeen Huntas” on there. The very fuzzy ink-jet printed or photocopied £1 Brown and Blue Kangaroo shown nearby would fool no-one right? Wrong. Take a good look at it - buyers had these, and even closer-up scans to work off, before bidding away madly like demented lemmings on this absolutely totally worthless garbage. In typical unhelpful fashion, the brilliant eBay description said just this - This is kangaroo 1 pound stamp. Probably 1916 year. Colour is blue(ultramarine , or dull blue) and brown. In my opinion no defect and stamp is ok. I try to describe stamp as good as possible There were 21 bids on this nonsense - seller was low feedback stanjoe54 - and of COURSE it was a “Private Auction” - a Shill Seller heaven smoke screen. The eBay Bunnies bid this up to about $A500. You just really cannot make this sort of stuff up. It is like some bad “D” grade movie. The stamp had lower corner letters AB. Many printed albums have a space for Plate 77 (worth around $A1 million!) so some folks like to fill that hole with something cheap. A few quid? Wrong - try £156 - or about $A300 at the time. A crazy price correct, for a hand painted fake? But WAIT - the story gets wackier. The eBay seller, bygonesofbridlington offered it again soon afterwards. Either the $300 buyer had seen a pyschiatrist, and then cancelled the sale, OR, the seller got greedy and wanted more for it. It is EBay - who really knows?
Lets get REALLY greedy.
And so it transpired. Second time around it sold for for £366.00 - or well over $A700. I kid you not, and it attracted 42 bids. Now you can buy a GENUINE 1840 1d Black AND 2d Blue imperf for that kind of serious money. But no, let’s spend it on a painted in forgery, worth a few $$s in the REAL world outside eBay.
These wacky things are near impossible to believe, but they occur daily. It seems many bidders on such things have NO idea of the area they are playing with. The stampboards discussion that raised this is here - tinyurl.com/Fake77 and it was pointed out via leading GB plating experts it was an outright fake, well before the initial auction concluded. “A fool and his money are soon parted.” And on eBay that occurs on a very regular basis, as some of these examples here clearly show. not sell. A Press Release etc on such important pieces well before the sale, gets some FREE global excitement into the bidding. The result of that is clear to see, and it is unsold at about $50,000, when all the Buyer Fees and taxes are added on. New catalogue value levels are a conundrum, when a second example is reported of something once thought to be unique. At present they are ACSC 44d cat $125,000, and SG 42ba, cat ÂŁ85,000 = A$160,000. A second copy generally halves those, and a copy with a repaired chunk is generally worth a fraction of a sound copy, to make the math even tougher. Only a few Kangaroos exist with SIDEWAYS watermarks, and all except the 1/- Green are pretty pricey. I offered this 1/- part Mullett imprint MUH block of 4 on my Rarity page recently for less than $A1000, and it sold fast. I illustrate it here, as the sideways watermark crown tops can be seen clearly on the gutter margin. Stampboards has a long detailed discus-
Glen Stephens Ugly Stamps DO Sell!
If you thought the Arthur Gray 5/- sideways Roo was ugly, take a look at the South Australia “MRG” pair shown nearby! MAIN ROADS GAMBIERTON Departmental stamps, with Black ‘MRG’ overprint without Stops, on a 2d brown-orange ‘dwarf-jumbo’ strange looking pair. This was auctioned by abacus in December and did not sell. I flew down for AEROPEX in Adelaide mid-December, and bumped into well-known SA collector Tony Presgrave, who was arranging the purchase of it from Gary Watson, for about $9,000 after buyer fees etc. This rather ugly (to me!) pair was from the Ric Slade-Slade collection, and despite having an internal repair, had a 2019 RPSV Certificate (who consulted Tony before issuing it) and some strange ‘hanging chad’ top edge perfs that Tony lustily promises HE will not be tearing or snipping off! These official “Departmental” stamps were generally printed on ugly and damaged and badly misperforated stamp sheets that the printer put aside for the “Free Government Use” and lots of them look pretty terrible, like
sion on this recent 5/- discovery, and the other Kangaroo sideways watermarks which is here - tinyurl.com/RooSide some interesting material in there. Mossgreen/ abacus auctioned two x ½d green Roos (another new discovery) with large ‘OS’ perfins in the last few years. SG Editor wants details on which direction the watermarks faced, if anyone can pass that on to me. Above & top left - Sold for $1,000

Bhutan 1973 LP record Airmail pair
this pair does. That is the charm to many. Presgrave posted this message below -
“Don’t even think of it …”
“The pair is now suitably mounted with the rest of the “MRG” in the collection, and by the way, the ragged separation at the top of the pair will NOT be trimmed off, that is all part of the character of these stamps. As I have said on many occasions when talking about the Departmentals stamps - if you are looking for perfectly centred, nicely cancelled, perfect separation, then don’t even think of collecting these stamps” $9,000 seems like a lot of money, but these Departmentals can bring nosebleed prices. A single example of the ‘M.R.G.’ with full stops after each letter, another variant, also on a 2d orange QV, sold by same auction in June 2019 for $A11,650. I took the photo nearby, of Tony holding the sale catalogue for the pair. He tells me it is the Star of his Exhibit for London 2020 this year, and he is flying over for the big show. Hopefully he 66 - Stamp News
will prevail there, as his Departmentals collection is probably the finest extant. Tony was sitting next to his good friend Neil Copping from Penola in the South East, who said he was going to buy it if Tony wilted under the fiscal pressure! I grew up in Mount Gambier (GAMBIERTON!) so this MRG sale has more than a passing interest for me. Neil’s fellow Mount Gambier Stamp Club member Lloyd Perry was the vendor, and it is believed he had owned it for the 40 years since the Slade-Slade sale back at Harmers of Sydney Auctions in 1979 which I attended actually. Getting too old for this! So I am sure Lloyd is pleased it stayed in South Australia. The SG Catalogue Editor told me this week he is working on a rarity rating or pricing system, for these issues at LONG last, and when that occurs, hold on to your hat. There are many 5 figure type pieces in the field. Be 105% CERTAIN of the provenance and authenticity of them however, when buying.
Glen Stephens tinyurl.com/SADepart is the long running stampboards discussion on these issues, that has world experts like Tony Presgrave (“pres”) help sort the good from the bad. The Sydney eBay forger is of course peddling all kinds of appalling fakes of them these days - see many of them on that thread.
Plastic Fantastics!
stampboards.com has hosted a very interesting discussion for some time about the 1973 stamp issue of Bhutan, that were actually fully playable vinyl 33 rpm records. I must confess I had never heard of, or seen these strange items before that discussion. An American member was seeking information about these stamps, and it grew from there. A NSW member Ken Pullen (who purchased Bexley Stamps in 2017) not only came up with a photo of the set of 7 different coloured vinyl record stamps, but he also showed the new issue press sheet that related to them! Photos of both sides of that April 1973 new issue Bulletin are posted up on stampboards.com - see it here - tinyurl.com/BhutanLP It outlines that the issue price of the set of 7 was $US4. First Day Covers were 25c extra! They were stated to be the world’s first stamp set that played music. I do not doubt it. I found it fascinating. Ken says he has played the records on a phonograph, and assures all readers that they certainly do work and play. More on that later.
Set 7 is catalogued $US400/$A600
One stamp has the national anthem of Bhutan on it. Others had national folk songs etc. Ken told me he purchased his set in 1990 for just $A25. Here is the amazing thing - in the current 2020 Scott catalogue the set of 7 is valued at $US400 ($A600) mint or used - unchanged for a few years now. 10 years back I freely sold them for $A250 a set 7, as Bill Hornadge had sold them to me. Bill put his final set in a Prestige auction and it got $850! And if you think that is absurd, the stampboards
website points out where a set recently sold on eBay for over $A1,000. That is far more than a MUH 5/- Sydney Harbour Bridge stamp. I learn something new about stamps every day. Lots of collectors enjoy seeking out off-beat and quirky issues. These kind of obscure things often sell for more than full cat as supply is tiny. Sets of 7 “Mint”, or on FDC are selling now for around $A1,000 on eBay to an Australian buyer after taxes - ebay.com/itm/401622646507 I saw a news piece that Bhutan issued the world’s first CD Rom stamps in 2008 - so maybe track down a few of these somewhere, and tuck them away, if you like a gamble. I personally have never seen those, or seen them offered even. Clearing my desk before I flew out for Xmas, I found superb Mint examples of the 2 x huge Bhutan 1973 Airmail stamps, 3NU and 9NU. These are the key to the set 7, and sell on eBay right now for $US220, plus the now compulsory 10% GST on imports, or $US242 = $A355, so I priced them $100 less, to pay for a Hotel room somewhere on our travels! For anyone really interested there is a link on here tinyurl.com/BhutanLP where someone has taped the content of all these 7 stamps off his record player. Pretty interesting if you have time! I was in Nepal and India this month, and was told the neighbouring neigh Bhutanese people have the happiest and most relaxed lifestyle of any nation. They have resisted mass tourism - VERY smart.
